Doing away with these 4 as much as possible would make a huge difference in our plastic consumption as a whole. Start small and work your way up to all 4. The easiest is the shopping bag. There are tons of reusesable choices and sometimes you don't need a bag at all. Just say no! Water bottles? Bring your own. Straws? Who drinks from a straw at home? You don't need one to drink water while out at a restaurant. Coffee cups are a little trickier when you get "to go". Bring your own or have it "for here" at places that use real coffee cups. Tree fungus before it went to its permanent home in Laguna Beach. Almost 1,000 #starbucks coffee lids. Type 6 plastic. Not recyclable and listed as a carcinogen by the EPA. Conceptual Processes -Divergent Thinking.

The first step was making a mind map which could guide our experimental construction and processes. Some points within this mind map were: -caffine -wakes you up -takeaway -warm / hot /steamy -sipping -climate change (recyclable uses) -mass produced -corporate  We liked the idea of mass production and this branched off into representing notions of repetition and the monotonous routine of many workers. Coffee is aligned with phrases like 'on the go' and 'takeaway'. To reflect all these ideas we chose to use the material to create symbolic impersonal, faceless suited figures who become mere consumers. Decaf, strong white, etc. each coffee type assigned to a particular figure but being a typical consumer, they are defined through the product they purchase/use rather than their individual qualities. Taking a less literal and more interpretative look on the coffee lids, we also chose to make a leaning sculpture, with the circular patterns almost symbolic of the repetitive connotations mass production is linked to.
