#JamesDonaldson On #MentalHealth – '#Kids Are Not Alright,' Say Authors Of Study On Rise In #Pediatric #SuicideAttempts During #Pandemic
The team’s earlier study found that #depression and #anxiety symptoms had doubled in #children and #adolescents during the first year of the #pandemic. Elizabeth Payne A file photo of CHEO. PHOTO BY ADRIAN WYLD /THE CANADIAN PRESS Article content #Emergencyroom visits by #children and #adolescents who had attempted #suicide rose sharply during the #COVID-19 #pandemic, according to new research reflecting what children’s hospitals in Ottawa and elsewhere have been experiencing. #James Donaldson notes:Welcome to the “next chapter” of my life… being a voice and an advocate for #mentalhealthawarenessandsuicideprevention, especially pertaining to our younger generation of students and student-athletes.Getting men to speak up and reach out for help and assistance is one of my passions. Us men need to not suffer in silence or drown our sorrows in alcohol, hang out at bars and strip joints, or get involved with drug use.Having gone through a recent bout of #depression and #suicidalthoughts myself, I realize now, that I can make a huge difference in the lives of so many by sharing my story, and by sharing various resources I come across as I work in this space. #http://bit.ly/JamesMentalHealthArticleOrder your copy of James Donaldson's latest book,#CelebratingYourGiftofLife:From The Verge of Suicide to a Life of Purpose and Joy www.celebratingyourgiftoflife.com Article content The global study, led out of the University of Calgary and co-authored by researchers at the University of Ottawa and CHEO, among others, found that, even as overall #pediatric emergency department demand plummeted early in the #pandemic, visits for #suicideattempts and #suicidalideation jumped steeply. Article content From the beginning of the #pandemic until July 2021, #pediatric emergency visits for #suicideattempts by #children and #youth rose by 22 per cent compared to rates before the #pandemic. There was also an eight-per-cent increase in emergency department visits by #children or #youth experiencing #suicideideation. The study was published Thursday in the journal Lancet Psychiatry. PHOTO BY UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY /Handout Lead author Dr. Sheri Madigan from the University of Calgary said the research highlighted the need for better #mentalhealth supports for #children and #youth. She said the earlier research underlined the fact that “#kids were in crisis, and that we needed to bolster services and resources, or it was going to get worse. “There’s been a debate during the #pandemic as to whether the #kids are alright or not alright. Now that more data have been published and analyzed, we can more precisely answer that question. The #kids are, in fact, not alright,” Madigan said. Madigan called for #mentalhealthresources, supports and services to be prioritized “to help #children shift from languishing to flourishing,” The research findings reflect the experience at CHEO in Ottawa, where emergency room visits for #suicidalideation and #self-harm increased early in the #pandemic and the surge in emergency visits for #mentalhealthissues has continued. Even as the number of #children and #youth coming to the emergency department for viral illnesses began to decrease at the beginning of 2023, after an unprecedented surge, demand for #mentalhealth treatment remained high and continues, spokesperson Patrick Moore said. “The #mentalhealth surge just keeps on going.” #Youth Services Ottawa operates a 24-hour crisis line at 613 260-2360. * Your child isn't getting enough sleep, or his eating habits have changed
* Your child acts aggressively
* He doesn’t get high grades

* He is more likely to get sick

There are many counseling options available. You only need to determine the needs of your child in order to choose the best counseling method. Sometimes multiple methods can be used for the same child. There are many therapies available for children. Here are some of the options:
Talk/Play Therapy
Talk therapy can be helpful for kids who find it difficult to talk about traumas or subjects. To help your Child Counselling Services what they cannot tell you, you can use toys or other objects. This therapy has been very beneficial for some children who have suffered abuse.
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

how do gifted programs work in the US? all the gifted kids posts i see seem SO far removed from my experience. i live in calgary in canada and here the gifted program was based off an iq test that a child psychologist would do and if you got over 130 they put you in the gifted program. the first one i was in had 11 kids and only one was white. and the second had 60 kids and like 3 were white & most were lower-middle/middle class + most of the ones i know of are in uni and not rlly burned out?
that’s really interesting! i think a lot of schools in the US operate in sort of the same way, like testing kids but i don’t think EVERY kid gets tested, you know what i mean? like there’s a selection process in order to get tested in the first place based on in class performance, or by a referral from a teacher or request from a parent. which, since “abnormal” behavior in a white child may be seen as a sign of being gifted but from a black or brown child it may be seen as disruptive, there is already going to be disparity between who is referred and who is pulled for testing. also, students from low income families may not have parents who had the privilege of free time where they would be able to read as often to their child as a parent who has the privilege of time, or the privilege of staying at home. there are studies that say that children entering kindergarten whose parents read them around five books a day enter kindergarten knowing about a million more words than children whose parents do not do this -- there are a lot of different studies with a lot of different numbers, but all are drastically higher for kids whose parents have the time to read to them this amount. anyway, that was too long of an explanation but that’s really interesting abt the differentiation in your g&t class! i’m interesting in hearing more about people’s g&t experiences outside of the US
#also while this is all based in research i've done i am not like an expert on g&t programs in the US so im sorry if this isnt reflective of#Anonymous

Preparing for a Social Study during your divorce or child custody case
If you have need a best suitable service your Child Law experience, Preparing for a Social Study during your divorce or child custody case with the great process! Houston Divorce Lawyers: In your divorce or child custody case you may be faced with a difference of opinion between yourself and your opposing party on who should have the right to determine the primary residence of your child. When it comes to child custody issues this is the most basic and important dispute that you and your child´s other parent could have. While you all may come to an agreement on how to settle this issue down the road in your case, as of now you are faced with the prospect of a longer than average case length and the possibility of having to rely on your judge to decide the case. If either of these eventualities could be avoided that would be for the best but in some situations you cannot do so. A social study evaluation will occur in almost every situation where you and your opposing party disagree on this subject. When conservatorship, possession and/or access to your child are in dispute then a social study will likely be ordered by your judge. Today´s blog post from the Law Office of Bryan Fagan, PLLC will discuss what a social study is, how it will impact your case and its possible effects on the outcome of the legal matter that you are engaged in. What does the law in Texas say about social studies? The Texas Family Code contains the state law on family law cases like the one that you are going through. This includes subjects related to social studies. The key thing to understand about social studies is at their conclusion the person who conducts the study will make a recommendation to the judge regarding which parent should have the right to designate and determine the primary residence of your child. While not every case will hinge on what the social study recommendation is, many cases will. Knowing what to expect could mean the difference between you reaching your goals and falling short. How long can a social study last? From my experiences a social study can last anywhere from six months to a year and a half in length. Interviews are conducted during the course of the social study of you, your child´s other parent, and any other persons that are relevant to your case. Your child will be interviewed where age appropriate with you and your opposing party. A solo interview of the person conducting the study with your child occur as well. You will be asked, along with your child´s other parent, to provide the social study evaluator with a list of references can be contacted in regard to your parenting skills and history. The interviewer will ask your references for an explanation of their history with you as a parent and their judgments of you regarding your involvement with your child. School teachers, counselors, physicians and other people in your child´s life may be interviewed as well. When an evaluation is complete what happens next? Family Law Attorney Houston: When all interviews and inspections of your home have been completed the evaluator will have everything that he or she needs to begin writing a report for the judge in your case. That report will detail their findings and will explain the recommendation regarding which parent should win the right to determine the primary residence of your child. Other recommendations that are commonly made involve whether or not a geographic restriction should be put in place that limits where your child can live as well as a finding regarding visitation schedules for the parent who does not win the right to determine your child´s primary residence. I will reiterate that the judge does not have to listen only to the recommendations made in the report that the social study evaluator creates. In fact, it would be a rare instance where your judge only relies on the recommendations when it is all said and done. With that said, the social study evaluator was likely chosen by the judge and that means that he or she must feel strongly that the opinions of this person are worth considering. With that said the social study is something to take very seriously even if it is not necessarily issue determinative. When is a social study begun in your case? Houston Divorce Attorney: A social study is usually ordered to begin at the conclusion of a temporary orders hearing. If you are involved in a contested child custody case it is likely that you have to go to a temporary orders hearing to decide this issue. The same can be said of a divorce (in addition to any property issues that need to be resolved on a temporary basis). A judge will give you and the opposing party an opportunity to agree to what person will conduct the study but if you cannot agree one will be appointed by the judge. Who will conduct the social study in your case? Therapists, counselors and people with mental health backgrounds are typically the sorts of people who are appointed to conduct social studies in family law cases. Licensed social workers, psychiatrists and psychologists typically fit the bill in this regard. Once you find out who the social study evaluator will be look into their professional history on the internet. If you do not believe that the person has the minimum qualifications to do the job you need to contact your attorney. At the very least your attorney can speak to you about the person´s resume or can raise their being appointed in a hearing with opposing counsel, the judge and the social study evaluator. What to expect when you are interviewed in the social study As I mentioned a moment ago you will be interviewed during the social study along with your child´s other parent. Your child will also be interviewed by themselves as well as with you and your opposing party in groups of two. In order so that coaching cannot occur all of these interviews will likely take place on the same day. The social study evaluator will want to learn how you relate to your child and vice versa. It is helpful to be able to learn this information outside of the distractions of other people and things. Preparation for these interviews is important. If you beloved this article and also you would like to collect more info with regards to divorce law firm Calgary please visit the web site. Even if you consider yourself to be a great, involved parent you will likely encounter questions and subject matter that you never really consider in your day to day life. In order to provide answers that address the concerns of the social study evaluator you will want to work with your attorney beforehand so that you can fully prepare. Whatever parenting skills you have will be on display during this interview. A lot of people have told me over the years that the social study interview feels forced or unnatural. I can´t necessarily disagree with these folks, but I would argue the whole premise of a family law case feels unnatural and hard to stomach a lot of times. With that said, this is the position that you are in and it is recommended that you enter the process fully prepared.

Soldiering through sickness not an option, so parents forced to juggle schedules
More and more parents are adjusting schedules because their children have symptoms that could be COVID-19.
Children are missing school and parents are missing work because powering through a runny nose or a minor cough used to be the norm, but people just can't do that anymore.
"What if it is COVID?" said parent Duntan Salvador.
Salvador has two young children, one of whom recently had a runny nose.
The next day, her other child had a sore throat.
"We were checking 'do you have a fever? No you don't have a fever. She kept saying my throat hurts,'" Salvador said. "I was panicking; I was so anxious."
Salvador's children are doing fine now, but she made the decision to keep them out of school until she was completely sure.
"I had to stay home," Salvador said. "I couldn't go to work until Friday I think."
Sara Austin is with Children First Canada and based in Calgary.
"Clearly, there's been huge disruptions to children and their families, both in terms of child education as well as parental employment," Austin said.
At least 10 per cent of Canadian families have had a child sent home from school due to having a least one symptom of COVID-19, according to a new study from children first Canada.
"Kids are being sent home with mild symptoms and having to go for samples," Austin says. "That means that kids and families are spending hours in line to get tested and often waiting days to get results."
Having no paid sick leave can make the situation even more difficult.
"And that really means that parents have to choose between 'do I send my kid to school sick, so that I can keep our family afloat financially,' or 'do we bite the bullet and take it on the chin and lose our house or not afford to eat,'" said NSTU president Paul Wozney.
Kevin Kelloway is an occupational health psychologist at Saint Mary's University.
"Along comes a pandemic and all of sudden we do a total reversal and say 'look if you're sick stay home if you have a symptom stay home, we don't want to see you here," Kelloway said.
Kelloway says companies are evolving quickly, but testing hasn't caught up.
"The sooner we get rapid testing for COVID widely available, the better for all of us," he said.
According to the Children First Canada report,
almost a half a million Canadian parents have had to quit or switch a job due to changes at school or daycare, during the pandemic.

Clinical psychologist - What can they do for you?
Personal Psychologist Calgary is the study of human behavior and mental processes. It involves observing, interpreting and documenting how humans and other animals interact with one another and the natural environment. Psychologists use scientific methods, concepts or procedures to discover their patterns and help them understand and predict behavior.
Many specialist medical psychologists meet with patients to provide diagnosis and assessments in their private offices. They can provide individual, family, or group psychotherapy, and may even create and implement modification programs. Many clinical psychologists work in hospitals. They collaborate with other medical professionals to create and implement treatment methods and intervention programs that patients can understand and follow.
Others are employed as medical psychologists in medical universities and educational institutions. They provide training to graduate students in the delivery and management of behavioral and mental health services. Many are involved in the physical treatment of patients with chronic pain, spinal cord traumas, stroke, arthritis, and other neurological conditions. Some may be found in community mental health centers, crisis counseling, or drug rehab centers. They provide assessment, treatment, remediation, consultation, and rehabilitation.
A clinical psychologist can help you with many issues. If you're being physically abused, molested or emotionally draining, or if you feel that you don't have the strength to handle a problem, a clinical psychologist can help.
These are the clinical areas of psychology. They include adult mental health, child mental health, learning disabilities and emotional disturbances.
You can visit them in their offices or clinics and make an appointment to see your psychiatrist. Clinical psychologists can work with any other person who can improve the patient's condition. This collaboration is even possible where they work with any health care team member to improve the client's condition.
Many people believe that someone who is experiencing emotional difficulties should not be given any support or attention. This is wrong. Emotional crisis is the most vulnerable time in a person’s life. If you feel overwhelmed and unable to handle the situation, consult a psychologist.
