To wake to your own consciousness—to realize, suddenly, as if by divine inspiration, that you exist in a world in a universe, would seem at once the simplest of all human achievements, and yet one of the most marvelous and complex philosophical breakthroughs of a millennium. Such is the subject matter and scope of “✓ BEiNG,” the first single and video from Chicago artist Angel Marcloid’s project Fire Toolz, on her debut album Field Whispers (Into The Crystal Palace), out August 30 via Orange Milk Records. An opening warble of ambient synthesizer immediately sets the world at peace; the curious chirping of birds erases all evidence of the corporeal and the modern. The whole thing oscillates in tranquil succession, like what you might expect to ensue upon hitting the reset button on Earth and its inhabitants. Before the big city, there was industry, commerce; before industry, there were resources; and before resources, there was human harmony with the natural world.
Out of a misting distance, delayed chords enters in and tremble the soil, giving way to near metal-like blast-beats and fills on drums and extraordinary vocals, wrenching, “The unified field whispers / so I open.” It’s not too harsh or loud or overbearing, just enough to impress a profound revelation, like what Descartes probably heard in his head when he wrote down, “Cogito, ergo sum.” Accompanying visuals play like variations of early Windows™ screensavers, glitching and blending into Marcloud’s actual performance on guitar, and her actual screaming into the camera/void. In the middle of it all some small entity approaches the giant Title check-mark, as though to reach full self-awareness.
http://www.earstofeed.com/watch-fire-toolz-%E2%9C%93-being/
[comment from the artist: i will never “reach” full self-awareness...but i will try to live rooted in it as much as i can. it seems to be what we are, essentially.]

ALBUM PREMIERE: Shadows Tranquil - Wander ~Starry eyes in perpetual autumn~
A little over a week ago our band Shadows Tranquil released our debut full length album Wander. The album takes the noisy guitar driven texture and gently bittersweet melodies of shoegaze and blends them with more dynamic genre styles with vary throughout the record. Shadows Tranquil’s atmospheric sound comes from guitar tunings unique to the band which are coupled with ritualistic visuals/performance art live by close friends of the band.
The band’s lyrical content is shrouded in cryptic imagery however our lyrics are still printed for people to decipher at their own enjoyment so the songs can take on personal meaning to the listener as all musical connections rightfully should. The album was written, recorded and mixed entirely at home in Denver Colorado and mastered in Chicago by the incredibly talented producer/multi-instrumentalist Angel Marcloid (Fire-Toolz, Mindspring Memories, Pregnant Spore) a longtime friend and musical hero of mine. Here’s one more Shadows track to preview entitled “Crescent Lurid”
If you liked what you heard and want to check out more; the album is available for purchase on our bandcamp and we should have CDs and at some point vinyl available down the line. Word’s cannot express the amount of effort we put into this record so if you dig it please share it with your friends and help Shadows Tranquil get our name out there as we are putting this album out without a record label. Hopefully we’ll be seeing you again live sooner than later.

Podcast: Tabs Out: Laser Focus #16 - Angel Marcloid (Fire-Toolz, Rainbow Bridge)
Tabs Out is an all-cassette podcast that’s been documenting the prolific tape underground with obsession, humor, and expertise since 2012. Tiny Mix Tapes has teamed with Tabs Out for a show called Laser Focus, in which tape aficionados/fetishists Mike Haley, Dave Doyen, and Joe B hone in on a specific label or artist. Check out the archive here. --- “Angel is one of the most prolific and confounding musicians out there. There’s the obvious aspect to that, with Angel putting out a blinding number of tape releases under tons of personas (don’t make me copy and paste info you can find on the Pregnant Spore Discogs page) and running the formerly torrential Rainbow Bridge label. By the way, did you know that the rainbow bridge is what pets cross to get to heaven when they die or some shit? What I find magnificent about Angel is a mastery displayed of soundmatter that the world at large considers trash: vaporwave, jazz fusion chords, pedal noise, screamo, an audiobook of The Perfect Storm. So, that brings us to the Fire-Toolz project, which spent some time as a nu-metal-/vaporwave-sounding thing with crazy video projections of manipulated CG trash, and has slowly oozed into new-age-plust-PTSD-screams territory. No matter what it sounds like, you hope that Fire-Toolz is the project that blows Angel up since the compositions are masterful and the zones so rarefied. Anyway, catch Angel vaping hash oil and ask her about her Rush tattoo before she gets those big industry dollars and disappears into Topanga Canyon like the freaks of yore.” — Mike Sugarman We spoke with Angel via the internet and talked about the internet, weed, cat food, and a few tapes. This interview features snippets from the following: - Justin Marc Lloyd - split w/ Collapsed Arc (Rainbow Bridge) - Sensible Nectar - Minor Devil (2:00AM Tapes) - Fire-Toolz - s/t (Hausu Mountain) - Copkiller - split w/ Cops (A Soundesign Recording) - JML - Has Been Remixed by Developer (Rainbow Bridge) - Angel Marcloid - In ☯rder F☯r Accessing The C☯re (Lurker Bias) Cover art for Fire-Toolz’s Drip Mental on Hausu Mountain Cover art for Pregnant Spore’s Journey To 0.004 Rendering #2 on Rainbow Bridge Angel Marcloid http://j.mp/2kDytIO

I’ve always been at odds with the idea of meditative music being, by necessity, soft or repetitive. The popular notion in the West persists of chanting, chimes, etc. True mindfulness though doesn’t require that set formula or certain boxes of Eastern traditions to check. With a bit of practice and the right mindset, the sounds are somewhat secondary. There’s a meditative quality to gnarly culture-jammer Fire-Toolz’s latest track “CODENAME BONKERS.” Even beyond the spiritual guidance of queer Buddhist priest Zenju Earthlyn Manuel (a nice sampling touch), this track has a different vibe to it compared to the earlier work of Fire-Toolz. Instead of the visceral, sample-heavy, twenty-songs-all-at-once approach that Angel Marcloid built the project from, “CODENAME BONKERS” is…mellow? The sonic perforation is absolutely still there; there’s a driving kick straight out of a gabber track but over a misty open chord, like rushing through a bonus level in Crash Bandicoot. In fact, it’s a rather bare track in contrast to what Fire-Toolz has previously done. The outrageous EBM sampling and black metal vocals are gone and what is left is a pure rolling beat, adorned with guitar and bass riffs as well as the occasional key squeal. It’s a strangely soothing sound. In the pursuit of zen, “CODENAME BONKERS” achieves something a little zany but no less sincere and mentally stimulating. With Fire-Toolz giving you all the textures and samples to work this one out, you’ll want to sculpt it with your mind. “May rage be settled."

Day Planners
Stress affects mental wellness. And for many, one of the most common causes of stress is the notorious hectic day. Day planners are a great way to organize our lives when it comes to work, school, appointments and other important dates. Though our cell phones and tablets can be used, there are still a majority of people who continue to utilize bound day planners. There are numerous styles to be had that break down the month, day and time to keep our busy lives on track.
The historical use of a day planner was for work/school time management; due to the fact that they help to keep one’s sanity when trying to remember the bazillion things we need to track at work. However as electronic communication becomes more constant, the lines separating work/school and life have become more blurred. Life does exist beyond our 9-5 weekly grind and those needs are just as important, if not more than, what we do to make a living. Modern day planners now include tools to help schedule the most important event: life.
The hours before and after work is our most precious time; it’s where we live life and express ourselves. Day planners have caught up to this fact and are tailored to suit just about any lifestyle or need. Here are a few examples and their key features:
Be Well Fitness Log $29.99 https://inkwellpress.com/collections/fitness-log Sleek with two style options of Blue Herringbone and Wooden Stripe. Spiral bound which allows it to lie flat. 3-Month plan (for mini goals); goal setting; weight and measurements; daily logging for meals/snacks/water, exercise and focus; and video tutorials. 6”x8”
Cog Toolz Wellness Planner $19.95 http://www.cogtoolz.com/collections/wellness-planners/products/2017-wellness-planners?variant=29535745411 Five different colors to choose from; includes a cartoon brain drawn in the lower right corner. Spiral bound which allows it to lie flat. Monthly layout with coloring sections; mood tracker; weekly: reflection, focus and gratitude list; goal setting; thought tracking; safety plan; and positive affirmations. Website includes additional resources and a blog. 6”x9”
Rituals for Living Dreambook + Planner $48.00 https://dragontreeapothecary.com/collections/rituals-for-living-dreambook A white bound book that has a lovely mandala-like, embossed image on the front. A dreaming section to connect with life’s true desires; planning sessions for 1, 3, 5, 10 year and lifetime goals; monthly, quarter and daily scheduling; rituals and activities; daily reflection; weekly focus; PDF version available.
I have the PDF version of this and love it! It took me about a month to do the prep work as there are a lot of deep questions to answer in the quest to find your life’s focus. This work helped me to let go of a venture that wasn’t serving my highest purpose and it put the rest of my work back in to focus, front and center. Don’t let my experience deter you; it is well worth the effort!
Visionary Journal 3.0 $55.00 https://www.visionaryjournal.co/ Chose from Black or Galaxy, which is a riot of heavenly colors. Spiral bound which allows it to lie flat. Monthly calendar with a week at-a-glace that has 6am-11pm scheduling; SMART goals, 90-day action plan; goal brainstorming and action plans; mini vision board; and monthly reflection pages. 7.5”x9.75”
This is only a small fraction of the planners that are available to purchase or download. You can find ones focused on academics, pregnancy, weddings, business, travel, relaxation and so much more. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, I recommend checking out sites like Pinterest to gather ideas to make your own. Many companies make motivational and reminder stickers to jazz up each day along with fancy pens and highlighters to capture important tasks.
Though planners are a wonderful tool, they are only effective if we actually use them. Putting pen to paper adds an air of commitment to those tasks, which can be frightening or daunting. If you are willing to take the necessary steps, working towards any goal can be greatly rewarding!
Until next time, discover the power of making your goals a priority.
