December 29, 2019: Three years ago today, Corduroy Institute convened to record our last session of the 2010s. We followed the methodology of using a random number generator to give us two discs from our collection that could serve as a guideline for our improvisation. The albums it selected were compilations by The Temptations and Chrome.
Tumblr media
Corduroy 58 began a kick and snare pattern from the Arturia Minibrute plus a dose of fuzz bass courtesy of the Deluxe Bass Big Muff Pi on the Bass VI. The high harmonic content of this ostensibly rhythmic layer would require extensive equalization and filtering later on when the piece was eventually mixed.
Our journal notes then indicate that the melodic layer featured a Telecaster sent "through a combo of pedals mediated by [S.A. Morin's] Triparallel Mixer." Visual evidence from from the session indicates that we may have employed the Pigtronix Philosopher King, the Ibanez Tubescreamer, the EHX Superego Plus, the EHX Attack Decay, the Boss FB-2 feedback booster, and the NUX Atlantic reverb/delay. This claim is wholly speculatory as it was deduced from the pedals which are shown to be engaged within our photographic memories.
Tumblr media
The melodic layer also entailed the use of the Casio AZ-1 keytar to control the Korg Volca FM. This frequency modulation synthesizer's output was augmented by the effects of the bass pedalboard, most notably a discreet amount of distortion. This performance remains the only instance in which we have ever used the keytar controller.
Tumblr media
Corduroy 58 would remain dormant until S.A. Morin added three sets of vocals on May 10, 2020. Live drum pad overdubs and W. Ruiz vocals were added in January 16, 2021. This piece would eventually be dubbed "A Suburban Purity," currently available on our album Eight/Chance/Meetings.

Casio PX-S1100 vs Roland FP10 | Digital Piano Review & Comparison
youtube
When the Roland FP10 digital piano hit the market a few years back it was almost instantly dubbed a ‘category killer’ due to its high-quality piano sound, and most importantly, due to the presence of the Roland PHA4 action.
The Casio PX-S1000 quickly became a great challenger due to its own unique value proposition (while the PX-S3000 was a huge hit in the next price point up), and the Casio Privia PX-S1100 seems poised to keep the battle going.
With that in mind, we’ll be comparing these two super popular, value-packed entry-level portable digital pianos that happen to remain among the most interesting match-ups in the class.
Let’s get into it.
Casio PX-S1100 vs Roland FP10 - Background
The PX-S1100 arrived fairly recently with the PX-S3100 Privia digital piano so we’ve been putting it through its paces and comparing it to other popular models in the same price range and class. We recently compared it to the Yamaha P-125 which was a very interesting look, so the Roland FP10 is next on our list.
This is also undoubtedly an interesting comparison, especially since the focus of these two instruments is a little bit different. Where the Roland FP10 is very much offered as an inexpensive practice instrument with a great tone and action but stripped-down features, the PX-S1100 is a little bit more versatile, and with discreet line outputs plus battery operation and a super slim cabinet, the S1100 is more equipped to serve as a gigging piano.
This is the general orientation of each of these pianos - the FP10 is very piano-centric, while the S1100 is more versatile and capable of being used as a gigging piano. With that important distinction out of the way, let’s get into the sound.
Digital Piano Sound Comparison
An enjoyable sound is so critical to the enjoyment of just about any instrument. If you can't connect with an instrument’s sound, it's going to be tough to connect with the instrument as a whole. When it comes to pianos, a weighted key action is also quite critical, and some would argue it’s actually more critical, but we’ll start here by comparing everything sound related between these two pianos. When considering the best digital piano tone generators on instruments available for under $1,000 CAD, we’re looking at two of the most sophisticated options in the class here, especially with regard to the acoustic piano sound.
Roland’s SuperNATURAL Piano Sound Engine
The FP10 is equipped with Roland’s SuperNATURAL sound engine. While this is a somewhat stripped-down version of the engine and does not possess the new higher-powered BMC chip featured in the FP-X instruments, this is still a very good sound engine with expressive sound.
In fact, even though the FP10 isn’t supposed to have compatibility with Roland's piano designer, at least at the time of this review we’re still able to connect the FP-10 to the Piano Designer and access all sorts of parameters that are lurking under the hood of Roland’s SuperNATURAL Piano engine.
With Piano Designer, you’re able to edit things like the lid height, damper resonance, string resonance, hammer noise and more.
Polyphony isn’t crazy, but it’s solid at 96 notes. Considering that the FP-10 is built for solo piano playing, 96 notes is more than enough.
Casio’s Multi-Dimensional Morphing AiR Sound Source
The PX-S1100bk is equipped with Casio’s Multi-Dimensional Morphing AiR Sound Source, and this has consistently been a well-reviewed since it first started appearing in Casio models a few years ago.
Via the new Casio Music App for iOS and Android, which replaces the Chordana Play App, you’re also able to edit various sound-related parameters. The S1100 also offers onboard control of Hall Simulators (reverbs) and a Surround Sound feature.
Polyphony is quite robust here at 192 notes meaning the S1100 is powerful enough to get into some serious layering and even arranging.
How does the Playing Experience Compare?
The default grand piano sound on the S1100 is very dynamic (much more dynamic than is typical in this class), and you have a lot of variety in terms of the tonal palette, from soft to loud.
The musical experience is also quite nice over on the FP-10, but we are hearing more tonal variety on the S1100. The dynamic range is also very nice on the FP-10, but again, we’d give the nod to the S1100 here overall as well.
To harken back to our first point regarding the importance of a good sound for one’s enjoyment of a given instrument, both pianos get a thumbs up here, whether you’re a beginner or a more experienced player.
Onboard Speaker System
One big surprise when getting these two digital pianos side by side was how well the FP-10 speakers actually stack up against the S1100.
The S1100 is using a dual downward-facing system with 16 watts of amplifier power and a pair of tone ports so your ear can get some direct sound.
The FP-10 is also using a downward-facing dual speaker system, but with no tone ports and only 12 watts of power. That being said, in some ways, we think the FP-10 is actually producing more bass response despite its lower-rated power output.
There is definitely a little bit more clarity and detail coming out of the S1100, but in terms of the overall depth of sound, the FP-10 more than holds its own.
Other Sounds
In terms of the non-acoustic piano sounds, we have a similar quantity of total presets here 15 on the FP-10 and 18 on the PX-S1100.
All of the basic tones that you'll need in any basic professional setting or even to have some fun with at home are covered, such as electric pianos, organs, strings and synths.
In general, the FP-10’s non-piano sounds are a little bit stronger across the board, especially with regard to the organ sound, but overall the total offerings here are quite similar.
Sound Wrap Up
When it comes to the core piano sound, as we often say at Merriam Pianos, it’s going to come down to a matter of personal preference. That said, we are hearing more tonal variety out of the S1100, and a slightly greater dynamic range.
The speaker trade-off is a better bass presence on the FP-10 despite less amplifier power, but slightly better clarity and overall detail on the S1100.
Lastly, while the range of sounds is pretty close on both the FP-10 and S1100, the non-piano tones are slightly better on the FP10.
Digital Piano Action Comparison
Roland’s PHA4 Standard Keyboard Action
Given that the FP-10 has been out for several years now, there are people that might be thinking that the FP-10 is yesterday's news and doesn’t currently stack up to some of the newer models from the likes of Casio, Kawai, or even Roland itself with the newer FP-30X.
Here’s the big reason why this would be sorely mistaken and why the FP-10 is still 100% relevant - the presence of the PHA4 action. Roland uses this action in many of their digital pianos right up to about the $2,000 price point, so the fact that it can be had in the FP-10 for significantly less money is huge.
This is a very capable and well-regarded action with triple sensor key detection, escapement and textured key tops- features generally not seen on actions available at this price point. The piano touch sensitivity is also adjustable to accommodate different playing styles.
If action is your top priority, you simply can’t beat the PHA-4 action at this price point, and this alone makes the FP-10 an extremely compelling option for many.
Casio’s Smart Scaled Hammer Action Keyboard
Looking over at the S1100’s Smart Scaled Hammer Action Keyboard, we certainly have some nice things to say about this action as well. The mechanical key action sound is actually a bit quieter on this action compared to the PHA4, and this is probably due to an increased level of key cushioning.
Now, it’s important to note that this is a very compact action, and this was a conscious choice by Casio in order to accommodate the incredibly slim cabinet of the PX-S1100. Basically, this means they had to shorten the pivot length below the norm to fit the action into such a slim case.
This also means that the Smart Scaled action is using a dual sensor, and does not feature any escapement. While there is a nice texture on the keys, all in all, the PHA4 action is undoubtedly a better key action, both on paper and in practice.
That said, we would still put the Smart Scaled action ahead of some others in the class, such as Yamaha’s GHS action (featured in the Yamaha P-45 and P-125) and Korg’s Natural Weighted Hammer Action.
Action Wrap Up
The action question here really comes down to this; if you’re already a fairly advanced player or intend to become one, the PHA4 is going to be a much more suitable choice as it behaves much more like a real acoustic piano action.
The Smart Scaled action is going to be just fine for beginner and intermediate players, but getting into more advanced classical repertoire will be difficult, and the differences between it and an acoustic piano action are more pronounced.
Features/Connectivity
There are some important differences between these two instruments when it comes to extended functions and accessory options, to the point that some of these functions could be a huge determining factor as to which action will be a better choice for you.
Casio PX-S1100 Features, Connectivity & Accessories Casio PX-S1100 Connectivity
A huge selling feature of the PX-S1100 is the ability for it to run entirely on battery power. As opposed to a cabled power supply, simply plug in 8 AA batteries and you’re off to the races. Combined with its weight coming in at under 25 lbs and the incredible flexibility this instrument is capable of really starts to emerge.
The S1100 is also shipping with the WU-BT10 Bluetooth Adapter which gives the S1100 wireless MIDI connectivity and audio capability, meaning you can use your S1100 as a sound source by streaming audio directly from your smart device.
The connectivity is rounded out with dual headphone jacks, USB Type A and B, plus an audio line in, not to mention the ever-important 1/4” line out which means the S1100 is truly a gig-ready instrument and can also easily connect to an audio interface.
The S1100 ships with a music stand and very basic switch sustain pedal, but we’d recommend upgrading to at least the SP10 damper pedal, but there’s also the option to go with the SP34 3-pedal unit as well, and the CS68 designer keyboard stand.
Standards like a MIDI recorder, audio recorder, metronome, transpose, split and some built-in songs are all covered.
Roland FP10 Features, Connectivity & Accessories
The FP-10, like most digital pianos, does not offer a battery-powered option, though it is also quite portable at 27 lbs. If battery power is a factor for you then obviously this is a big consideration.
The connectors are similar with built-in Bluetooth Connectivity covering MIDI (there’s compatibility with Roland’s Piano Partner) but no Bluetooth Audio, USB Type A and B (use this to connect to a DAW) and a single headphone output, but the FP-10 does not have any discreet line output jacks. This makes it tough to sell the FP-10 as a legit gigging option.
The FP-10 also ships with a music rest and basic footswitch pedal that we would recommend upgrading to the Roland DP-10 damper pedal with half-pedalling capability. It however does not offer any triple pedal compatibility, so if that’s a critical feature for you, the FP-10 is out. Roland does however make their nice KSCFP10 designer stand available.
The same standards like a metronome, transpose, split, twin piano mode and some built-in songs are present here.
Closing Thoughts
When we take everything in, what we’ve got with the Roland FP10 is a great-sounding and great-feeling digital piano with convenient Bluetooth MIDI. If you're primarily focused on recreating the feeling of a real piano with an instrument with very accurate MIDI output, such as in a studio situation where you need a good MIDI controller, the FP-10 is simply unbeatable for the price given the PHA4 action.
If you're looking for something a little bit more well-rounded and gig ready, or if you’re specifically after something that offers battery operation, the PX-S1100 is probably your better bet.
In any case, we’ve got two great 88-key digital pianos here with differing sets of specs sure to be great options for many piano shoppers.
Thanks for reading!

Facts It Is Important To Understand About Calculations
Calculations are a fundamental piece of our life. We experience them in every single element of life; as a kid, a mom, a homemaker or even a professional. However, some calculations are easy, but there might be a couple of that could churn mental performance out. To escape the tediousness of those calculations, humans invented a computer device that can do these calculations with a faster rate together with the chance of error shrinking to 1% this also device was named preciously on its usage and was dubbed because the 'calculator.' In their earlier days, the calculator merely performed minute calculations like addition and subtractions, however with time, human dependence grew about the utilization of they. As increasing numbers of science was made, the calculative part became a lot more dense there would be a desperate are looking for some measures that can help in practicing these calculations.
Tumblr media
Finally, inside a breakthrough invention, the globe saw its first handheld scientific calculator, which have the ability of performing not just addition or subtraction. At the moment, calculators are designed such that they're able to handle both simple plus the most complex mathematical situations. A substantial variation over these items are noticed in the marketplace, as there are a number of calculators for anything from a technical person for an accountant. However, regardless of a great deal development in fraxel treatments, the basic problem is still the identical; we could face calculations at any point of your time but we simply cannot carry the calculator around along with us every hour during the day. In spite of the great portability features supplied by many calculators, it is still not to practical or feasible. To tackle this concern, most of the people utilize online calculators. Goth Must-Have Electronics of the 80's
"1980's: not a time period but a state of mind." - Carrie Vaughn
Tumblr media
We goths of the 1980's certainly didn't have anything approaching the tech that's around today, but we weren't completely techless. As my goth friends and I were fairly tech savvy, we pounced on the latest gadgets whenever they seemed well suited to our needs. Most of our personal worlds revolved around goth music, and our medium of choice was the compact cassette tape. These had been around since the early 60's but they really took off in the late 70's - just in time for the arrival of goth music. Of course, there were plenty of folks who still preferred long playing records (LP's) but those had some disadvantages in our eyes - they were big and not easily carried about, it was more difficult to copy them, and they required a large record player. Since my friends and I were all preteens in the early 80's, living in our folks' houses within our small bedrooms, we didn't have much space (or money) to spare for large stereos. Best to collectively buy an album on cassette and make cheap copies. Within a few years, portability would became paramount. But first things first - boom boxes!

About 1981 or so, I dropped major cash (for an 11 year old, at least) on a Sanyo MW703 dual cassette & radio - it never broke and I was still using it well into the 90's, until I finally donated it to Goodwill. It ran on batteries, so it was portable, as well as having a plug in adapter. Although it was smaller than most boom boxes, it still had great sound quality, plus the relatively small size meant it could fit in my tiny room easily. The dual cassette feature allowed one to drop in any cassette album on one side and a blank tape on the other, press the high speed dubbing button, and that album was copied in mere minutes. Blank cassettes were about a dollar each, compared to about seven dollars for an album. The usual procedure when a new album came out was to pool our money (there were usually about 7 of us interested in any given album, so about a dollar each) and we'd assemble at someone's house to quickly copy and distribute. Shiver me timbers, but we became pirates at a young age! (Don't even get me started on how we would pirate early computer games - another story for another time.) Gothic, and some heavy metal music, were the ubiquitous sounds emanating from our rooms, usually with the added noise of a video game. (This remains the case even today - wonder when I'll grow out of this phase?)
Tumblr media
Hot on the heals of boom boxes were the portable cassette players, in particular, the Sony Walkman. The first Walkmans were stupid expensive, but within a very short period of time, their price came within reach of us mere mortals and I quickly became more likely to forget my pants when heading out the door than to forget my Walkman. Those small, portable cassette tapes became priceless since I could carry several in the pockets of my long coat, along with spare batteries. We all quickly discovered the wonders of rechargeable batteries and with all this in place, we were the original, oblivious zombies shuffling through the mall or down the sidewalk on our way to Camelot Music or Sam Goodie for the latest release.
Tumblr media
Digital watches had started out as clumsy train wrecks in the 70's, but by the early 80's they were finally refined into something useful. We tended to favor Casio digital watches of one variety or another, and it's quite remarkable that they still pretty much look and function the same today. They were modern, their batteries lasted forever, they were inexpensive, and they were black. Sold!
Tumblr media
Another toy that some of us liked were cameras, either standard or instant. Several of my friends had the Polaroid OneStep, which gave instant photos to document whatever the owner thought important enough to take a pic of, although the quality was inferior to regular film cameras, the photos degraded within just a few years, and the Polaroid itself wasn't very portable.
Tumblr media
I owned a Minolta Autopak, which took good quality photos and more importantly, fit in my pocket. Not that I ended up using it much. After the hassle of running the film in to get it developed a couple of times, my camera quickly became a forgotten paperweight. I regret not using it more, since I have almost no pictures from the 80's or 90's, but photography was so inconvenient compared to now, I can't really blame 80's me. I take more photos on any given day now with my phone than I did during all of 1985.
Tumblr media
Rarer gizmos were the various pocket TV's that came out during the 80's. Only my wealthier friends owned these, but they were fine with loaning them out, so sometimes I became a temporary warden for one. The Sony Watchman was hands-down the best. It was pocket sized, light, possessed decent battery life and good reception. It's main drawback was that it was hard to watch in a moving vehicle since you had to keep adjusting the aerial to catch the signal, and it couldn't get cable TV, so no MTV. They were good for those family camping trips when you became so starved for media that you'd watch a farm futures report just to feel like you weren't marooned on a deserted island, but that was about it. All these small electronics became permanent additions to our wardrobes. I remember once emptying my coat pockets while looking for something in front of my Dad: Walkman, camera, batteries, cassettes, and a borrowed Watchman TV. My Dad, with a wry smirk, asked if Radio Shack had opened a new store in my pockets.
Tumblr media
Then there was the VCR (only serial killers owned a betamax). My family didn't have one until about 1984, but a couple of my friend's families had them as early as 1981, so I was familiar enough with them fairly early. For myself, and most of my friends, there just wasn't enough to interest us on TV, so we really didn't have a need to tape much, with the rare exception such as the V mini-series or episodes of Tales from the Darkside. It wasn't until about 1985 or 1986 that video rental stores became common enough that you could rent movies (Blockbuster started in 1985) and that became a big hit with my little group of friends - suddenly, every horror movie ever made was available to rent and we were all over that! Plus, if you could get your hands on one of the catalogs from the video rental store, you'd discover there were videos of concerts and music video collections that could be purchased, albeit at a high price. I literally watched my Sisters of Mercy tape so much, it wore out. Then in 1986, MTV introduced the 120 Minutes show. Most of the videos for any given episode were not anything I was interested in, but there was always the potential to catch a goth video by The Cure, or The Damned, Sisters of Mercy, etc, so I would tape each episode then watch the next day to see if I'd caught anything good. If I had, I'd save that tape and eventually take several along with my VCR to a friend's house. We'd hook the VCR's to each other and copy the good videos onto one tape. Then copy that tape and share it. I did this for over two years, only finally stopping when I went to college. I'd still watch 120 Minutes from time to time, but I'd stopped by the time I finished school.
Tumblr media
And, of course, there were video and computer games galore during the 80's. I personally owned an Atari 2600, Intellivision, Colecovision, and Commodore 64. I didn't own a Nintendo or a Sega, but most of my friends had one or the other, or both, so I still got to play those plenty. One acquaintance of mine owned a Vectrex, which I thought was amazing, but I just didn't have the money for yet another system. There were a few gothy games my friends and I were bananas about (see my previous blog - Top Ten Goth Console Games of the 80's) and dozens of others that were somewhat gothy. Hand held games were also ubiquitous amongst us, since they gave one something to do during two player games where you had to take turns. One called Split Second from 1980 was addictive enough that I think we each had one of our own and, years later, we all bought Game Boys within weeks of it being released. I still have a Game Boy, though the one I bought in 1989 broke around 2002, so I'm on my second one, a purple Game Boy Color. But the Tetris cartridge I have is the original one that came with the Game Boy and it still works just as well as the day I opened the box in October, 1989.
Tumblr media
Today, all of that 80's hardware fits literally into the phone in the palm of your hand. It's a genuine marvel that all the music, TV shows, movies, music videos, and video games from that decade, can be found on the internet via a cell phone. In a very real sense, the 80's are still with us - just turn on your phone, and you're there.

#TGTfeature 011: Manudigital [X-Ray Production: Paris, France] Switching styles - but not ignoring any crucial basslines - after Denver’s own Kālī, it is #TGTfeature 011 with French digital reggae extraordinaire Manudigital. This and forthcoming #TGTfeature articles will highlight dedicated musical talents by featuring their recent work as well as an in-depth interview. The versatile veteran multi-instrumentalist and producer has moved from strength to strength with his collaborative mindset driving his potent studio work, as well as his live performance videos. Manu shared his thoughts on the development of his current musical focuses, why the synth changed reggae music, and the realities of being a contemporary artist. A bit about Manudigital: - Multi-faceted digital reggae aficionado, he’s a beatmaker, bassist, producer, and composer in addition to an ambassador for the Casio Casiotone MT-40 keyboard - Beyond multiple singles and EPs, he has released two full-length albums on X-Ray Production – including this year’s Bass Attack, released in early October - His standout Digital Session video series blends raw live vibes with polished post-production; features include the latest from Luciano, as well as Capleton, Burro Banton, and Solo Banton & YT, plus highly recommended collaborations with Queen Omega and Junior Cat
youtube
TGT: How’s the reception been for Bass Attack, and which collaboration are you the proudest of? Any interesting stories about how a particular tune came together? M: The realization of this album was very cool! For 95% of the tracks, I asked artists with whom I had already had the opportunity to collaborate on other projects like their own album, one riddim, or video sessions, so it was like working with the family! I composed partly in Paris, at home, and in Jamaica, and most of the singers recorded their voices on their side. You know, I'm in the studio every day for various projects so I'm very used to recording compared to some bands or singers who record in studio only for their album. The coolest session was the one with Dapatch on the song “Strictly that Style," we recorded the track in less than an hour! That day, the composition, the voice recording, and the mix were chained very easily, we were exactly on the same wavelength – incredible!
Bass Attack by Manudigital
TGT: The Digital Session series has included some amazing live takes. What is the creative process behind these live recordings, and how do you decide which riddims are most suitable for artists? What can we expect in the future for this series? M: The Digital Sessions are part of my favorite projects! Because, in addition to music, there is a cultural, human, even sociological dimension for some sessions… the creation of these sessions is really just about feeling! I don’t conceptualize the thing too much before, we improve the riddim together on the spot, we also choose the lyrics, we repeat 3-4 times and record in 1 shot! It is very important for me to keep this natural aspect, I think that people feel it when they are looking at the sessions… I still have plenty of others to release soon! So stay tuned, the best is coming!
youtube
TGT: You are clearly a lover of digital reggae, fusing together modern production equipment and techniques with vintage 80s sounds. What attracted you to that original era of dancehall music, and why do you feel it’s so important to be still playing the Casio MT-40? M: For me, the 80s and 90s were a pivotal time in Jamaican music production, that's where everything changed radically! Before that, it took a whole group to record, but the Sleng Teng riddim appeared and everything became possible with just a synth! Artistically it is not necessarily the most creative period in Jamaica, but in terms of sonority it was the most prolific! For me, it is important today to combine this sound with more modern things; if you think about it the two are not so far… TGT: Bass Attack also showcases some fellow producers in Panda Dub and Ed Solo. How did those collaborations come together, and why did you feel like it was important to share duties behind the boards? M: Yes for Panda Dub, it was a long time that I wanted to make a track with him because I'm a super fan of his style! We met a lot of times on tour, so it was obvious to make a tune together! As for Ed Solo, he asked me to remix a track that I made with my friend Sherkan for the Tiger Records label, and as I'm a fan of drum & bass and jungle, it was really great news for me! Ed Solo is one of the best producers in the world in this style, along with Deekline, Congo Natty, and Benny Page… TGT: What advice do you have for up-and-coming producers? Any favorite production tricks or techniques that you’re willing to share? M: If you look at my videos like the Back Inna Days, you'll see that I always share a lot of stuff to my audience, like the name of the machines from which the original sounds of the classic riddim come, for example. But the best advice I can give to the youngest producers is that the production equipment is at the service of music and not the other way around… it is useless to spend thousands of dollars in material, the most important is to use it well.
youtube
TGT: How best to be heard in the busy musicscape of 2019? Is it collaboration with well-regarded artists, aligning with known brands like Reggaeville, or unique content that matters the most? M: I think there is not one way that matters most today, but this is the multiplication of lots of little things that will move forward, and the main thing is to make good music that makes you vibrate! But it remains only 50% of the work… after you have to be on all social networks, interact with your fans, and participate in all interviews and concerts that you can. TGT: Much respect, and thanks for all the amazing music!

Becker & Mukai - Time Very Near - a genre stew from two multi-instrumentalists (SaS Recordings)
Parisian cinema composer Jean-Gabriel Becker is best known for idiosyncratic soundscapes, whilst Susumu Mukai is a world-renowned Japanese composer and multi- instrumentalist. Together they’ve created fresh new music that floats effortlessly above traditional genre delineation, with a dubbed-out and experimental melange of modern acid house, post punk, global grooves and clattering beats. Still not complying to genres, ‘Time Very Near’ is their tentacular new album, which gathers sounds and inspiration from an ever-expanding palette of influences, assembled into something amorphously intangible that’s simultaneously refreshing and sharp, meandering and cosmic, futuristic but timelessly vintage. All tracks written and produced by Jean-Gabriel Becker and Susumu Mukai. Jean-Gabriel Becker: synthesisers and machines, guitar, percussion. Susumu Mukai: synthesisers and machines, bass, percussion, drums. Kenichi Iwasa: trumpet on ‘Tout Azimuth’ and ‘The Double’ Olly Betts: drums on ‘Time Very Near’ Illustration by Susumu Mukai, sleeve design by Becker & Mukai Gear used: Boss Dr Rhythm DR-110, Roland TR707, Roland TR808, Korg KPR77, Kawai R100, Roland TR606, Roland Juno 60, Roland Juno 106, ARP Odyssey, Casio CZ3000, Ensoniq ESQ1, Yamaha CS-5, Crumar Bit-One, Eventide Harmonizer, Yamaha DX7, Mutron Biphase, Yamaha REX50 multi-effects, Fender Stratocaster Japan 1987, Epiphone Newport Bass 1965, Hofner bass 1961, Fender Telecaster 1975, Fender Jazz Bass 2010 and more.

Shaina vs Marin
In episode 16 we saw a fight between Ophiuchus Shaina and Eagle Marin, im tired to read “that doest happen in manga” “Marin doesnt wanna fight”... this is not an opinion it’s a fact.
Marin is the silver saint of Eagle, she’s 16 years old, from Japan, she is 167cm tall and 51 Kg, (flyweight class).
Shaina is the silver saint of Ophiuchus, 16 years old, from Italy, she is 166cm tall and 49 Kg, (light flyweight class).
In light weights, Shaina's smaller wingspan gives her a faster and more powerful blow in spite of her lower weight, but also her lower weight gives her more resistance and speed than Marin.
Let’s begin in episode 1, when Shaina intercepts Seiya and Marin,
Tumblr media
Shaina defies Marin to fight her to save Seiya...
Tumblr media
but Marin refuses to fight and just advice Seiya during the fight.
Tumblr media
Shaina beats Seiya hard but he only did a comeback when his pride overcome his lack of fighting spirit because the soldiers were beating him. A meteor broke her mask and Shaina let him go.
In the manga Shaina’s role is a joke, she never fight Seiya again (just like ep 37, now i love you...), im sure Michi Himeno didn’t like that, Kurumada, do you really think this woman is not going to do anything to get revenge?
Of course in the anime, she does, Shaina trains hard to get stronger.
After the "old Pope died", Shaina seize the opportunity to test her skills and take vengeance over Marin, so lure her in a supposed training match.
Tumblr media
Then we saw Shaina attacking Marin with a kick, take attention is this attack because is exactly the same she will use later. Marin dodges it with difficulty.
Tumblr media
Shaina keeps pressing Marin, now it seems Marin dodges with more ease but Shaina maintains balance easily allowing her to attack again before Marin can launch a counterattack, at the end Shaina fakes a punch where she is attacking with another kick and Marin is forced to jump back.
Tumblr media
Marin is panting because she's tired; not because Marin is scared,
Tumblr media
In the other hand for Shaina this was just a warm-up, now she knows Marin's speed and stamina.
Tumblr media
Marin complains because she thought Shaina invited her to spar.
Tumblr media
Now the conversation may vary depending on the dubbing, in the original version (Japanese), Shaina uses a racist tone, but she is only trying to provoke Marin to attack, but her taunt doest work. In the Spanish versions there is no reference to the Japanese or slavery, simply Shaina always fights for real.
Tumblr media
In any case, this causes Marin to take a defensive stance, she can't attack because she's tired but also Shaina proved to be able to manage the Pegasus Meteor Fist, and a single attack like an Eagle Toe Flash, Shaina will dodge it easily. The best option for Marin is to be defensive while recovering.
Tumblr media
Shaina needs a faster attack to hit Marin and does it with a Thunder Claw based on kicks. It's the same attack at the beginning of the fight, but much faster.
Shingo Araki can't save frames in the animation to make it look faster because we wouldn't see it, the cobra's recreation is magnificent for a 1986 anime.
Tumblr media
Marin is unable to dodge or block this attack. Shaina kicks Marin eleven times, ten in the belly and one in the head. Shaina knocks down Marin.
Tumblr media
Shaina defeats Marin with a single Thunder Claw, a technique Marin saw several times in the first episode, Shaina is so fast Marin couldnt do anything. Marin is knocked out, unable to get up.
Tumblr media
But Shaina doesn't look happy or satisfied with her victory
Tumblr media
The action is cut and we move on to a scene between Pope, Gigas and Phaeton.
Tumblr media
This scene lasts 50 seconds, Shingo Araki saves a scene where presumably Shaina laughs at Marin and despises her, lifts her off the ground to keep hitting her. Since Marin's body is not bloody we can assume that the action returns just when Shaina hits again.
Even with her mask, we can see the pain in Marin’s face
Tumblr media
Marin can't stand up, so Shaina hits her again to throw her against the soldiers so they can hold her, but she also has to make sure Marin can't recover from the previous blow.
Shaina kicks Marin 3 times and finishes her combo with a kick in the head.
Tumblr media
It may seem that the soldiers do not let Marin move, but in reality Marin does nothing to move. Marin is completely stunned.
Tumblr media
With Marin at his mercy, Shaina changes her tactic and prepares to use her fists, Shaina charges while she shouts like an amazon with a loud warcry.
Tumblr media
Shaina hits Marin even harder, now is Marin who screams loud but in pain. The animation for Marin's face changes to reflect a stronger blow and the pain.
Tumblr media
Shaina hits Marin hard in the belly, it's four punches counting the previous blow.
Tumblr media
Shingo Araki changed the position of the camera, to show how Shaina is beating Marin with both fists. Shaina hits six times.
Tumblr media
The beating is too strong, Shaina deals a crushing blow after another, Marin cannot withstand such powerful punches, she begins to bleed abundantly, with the sound of the blows we can count three more,
Tumblr media
High blood pressure causes your wounds to open and bleeds heavily from the head, internal wounds from the punches in the belly makes her bleed from the mouth too. Marin begins to shake and she is about to reach her limit.
Tumblr media
As long as Marin keeps screaming and conscious, Shaina won't stop the butchering. Five more punches to add.
Tumblr media
But Aiolia shouts her to stop.
Tumblr media
Although it is not seen, the soldiers release Marin and it falls on Shina
Tumblr media
Now it is Shaina who holds Marin.
Tumblr media
Now Shaina complains because Aiolia defends Marin
Tumblr media
Aiolia helps Marin and remembers Shaina, she also swore allegiance to the new Pope.
Tumblr media
Aiola asks if she is still angry about the defeat of Casios
Tumblr media
That makes Shaina more angry, which threatens Aiolia in the original dub, but in the end she has to leave.
Tumblr media
In the end, Shaina did not hit vital areas of Marin's body, she could recover. Shaina's goal was first to paralyze Marin and then give her a brutal beating and it is no less true that if Aiolia had not intervened, Shaina would have killed Marin.
Combat log:
COMBAT DURATION: (2:10) ; effective time (1:20)
Attacks made: Shaina - 40 : Marin - 0
Dodges made: Shaina - 0 : Marin - 8
Successful hits: Shaina - 32 : Marin - 0
Successful kicks: Shaina - 14  : Marin - 0
Kicks in the belly: Shaina - 12  : Marin - 0
Kicks in the head: Shaina - 2 : Marin - 0
Successful punches: Shaina - 18  : Marin - 0
Knockdowns dealt: Shaina - 1 : Marin - 0
knockouts dealt: Shaina - 1 : Marin - 0
Shaina wins by KO
Tumblr media
I've also read that Marin lets Shaina hit her to “avoid problems”... is a great idea, letting a rival who hates you beat you to death. Marin tries to fight but simply cannot, she doesnt Shaina acts like a swarmer pression on Marin
Nothing happens to recognize Shaina defeats Marin. It's true Shaina attracts Marin to fight in a supposed spar, but soon Shaina proves to be faster and more resilient than Marin, once Marin knows this is a real fight, she has enough time to attack or defend but Marin knows Shaina is a tough warrior, no Seiya's Meteor Fist was able to hit her (in fact, in all fights between them) so Marin's neither and an Eagle Toe Flash would be easily dodged because Shaina is faster.
Marin knows Shaina's Thunder Claw from the first episode, she saw it several times, so her best option is block it and counterattack to defeat a faster opponent.
But Shaina has been training hard for a long time, and her Thunder Claw is more powerfull and hits Marin completely, from then Shaina dominates the fight, Shaina gives Marin a vicious beating Marin.
The duo Araki-Himeno developed these characters much more, Shaina is a hardcore warrior, brave and sometimes insolent, the other silver saints treat her with respect, she fought Seiya 4 times, fought Hyoga and Shun at the same time, she survived to gold saints attacks, god warriors and even Poseidon. Also she was able to block Bud's Shadow Viking Tiger Claw to save Shun.
While Marin is a more defensive and reflective fighter, when she understands Asterion's power, she manages to defeat him with a single blow but also she has a more active role in research such as when she finds Shion's body, when she discovers the existence of Alcor Zeta Bud or when she finds Seika.
