Part five and final of Jess Reads Fierce Valor as we reached his post WWII military career, his retirement and last years of his life
Notes: Please read the book and take your own conclusions if you can, this is my view and my own clonclusion from my experience reading it
okay now really not much happens, he got married for a second time, stayed in the army, got divorced again
he came to the veterans reunion in 1947 and then never showed up again until some 50 years later
he made his final combat jumps in Korea, he had like 4 which was like a LOT
btw do you guys remember Albert Blithe from the series right? Right! the guy lived after recovering from his wounds and actually served in the 187th Infantry Regiment, guess who was the company commander? thats right! our very own bald man
ok so he worked and had time studied Russian and became the governor os Spandau, at this time there was already some cold war shit going on
speaking of shit, his german was shitty (so is mine!!!) so he couldn't quite undestand the prisioners but played chess with one of them??
Ah yes got married and divorced again
trained and organized some stuff for the the Royal Lao Army and some more army duty??? but nothing interesting is said really
he was then Lieutenant Colonel and worked with the Pentagon, it says that his army duty came to an end in 1964 but his name came up in army records in 1965 at a special division, so he had some function? was he a spy? we will never know for sure
okay now he is retired, married again (the man was a machine), had some health related problems and had to do some heart surgeries, like 5 of them or even more
at this point he was really introspective over his life, then the Ambrose book came and old man was PISSED because guess what??? Ambrose didn't even bothered to actual fact check his book and Speirs felt that he did dirty to his first ex-wife and even to himself
Dick became his biggest advocate and tried so many times to reunited him to the last members of Easy but he couldn't, he even begged Speirs but remember he is a Taurus so he said no again and again
toward his late years and after the release of the book he was afraid some n30-naz1s would come after him for some kind of vengeance so he asked for his name adress and personal info to be removed so Dick was the only one who knew hot to contact him
then there was the reunion for the screening of Band of Brothers and he finally showed up after his last wife made him show up and it was really emotional, Matthew Settle just watched the real Speirs and Dick watching the first ep and then Matthew showed up on his door and asked him to sing his cast, cause he got hurt his feet somehow
oh right forgot to mention that he loved his poodles, he was really into square dance (I don't know what the hell this is don't ask me), had some weird hobbies like pan for gold on rivers??? also normal ones like playing golf and he was also a nice elderly to his grand-sons and great-grand-sons, nephews, nieces and stuff
he had really bad PTSD specially while sleeping ans even after being retired he couldn't relax while sleeping and always eat his food fast.
he wouldn't let people kill spiders, like black widow spiders because of the William Wallace story and because he served in a company that the symbol and nickname was one
also he didn't talked about his army life like AT ALL, he said it was harder for him to remember things since he spent great part of his life om the army while the other guys served like with one company and that was it, for me it's clear it was bullshit he was so hard on himself and self critical on the basic stuff he didn't so one can only imagine how he dealt with the heavy stuff
his final years he was losing his strength, already loss great part of his hearing and was so ashamed of it and was really frustrated and miserable
after his death this one person of his family took his ashes and spread somewhere in a beautiful lake near the Canadian border where he rests today, quite emotional really
Okay so overall this was such a great reading, it's really a testament to how complex, mysterious and sometimes twisted his character really was.
I loved how the authors didn't pushed any agenda or narratives, I feel like they did a good job because they didn't tried to justify any of his actions, they just wanted to bring as many facts to the table as they could so we, as readers, could come up with our own conclusions
Mine is: He was crazy indeed, he did some questionable stuff and it took it's toll on him during and after the war, but also really cared for the man on his side, he sure could be cruel, flawed, cold blooded, impetuous and a true killer, but at the same time protective, respectful, really smart and incredible skilled as a leader, so much that everyone respected him for it, some loved the man dearly, some despised and that it was what truly amazed me by
A big thank you to everyone who followed my dumb takes during this reading, it was really fun to do!!!

I know it‘s been a few years but I still occasionally think of ‚ain't like anywhere else‘. You‘ve probably moved on completely… But what did you have in mind for chapter 2? 👀🥺
this ask prompted me to open the google doc for the first time in years, so what the hell, let's exhume some remains and do some self-reflection about why part 2 was never going to work.
(all of the bits that follow are unedited material straight from the draft. i hope i've become a better writer than this over the past three years.)
Here's the opening paragraph:
Trevor was meant to be here. Not like he was born in the wrong place, since he’d never give up his birthright of New York obnoxiousness, but like it was all building to this. It’s never too hot. His body can’t soak up enough sunshine, hair sun-kissed, skin turning a permanent California brown. He’s trying to turn Jamie into a Californian but he’s stubbornly Canadian. Fishbelly white no matter how much time they spend in the sun.
the main reason part 2 didn't work is that there was really no reason for me to write my own take on the jamie/trevor origin story. it's been done, and by better writers than me. i just didn't feel the compulsion to write it, unlike the trevor/cole story, which was all mine.
anyway, the plan was to set up some tzjd undefined hooking up during their first season, and then have them stick around in california for the start of the offseason, and have cole come visit after the habs lost in the stanley cup finals (wow, remember when that happened?)
A week and a half later, there he is, waving at Trevor under the overhang at arrivals. Cole’s the most solid body Trevor knows. Dense, like he’s vacuum-packed down to size. Hugging him is like colliding with a mailbox. He presses his face into Trevor’s neck, quick, and Trevor’s not going to read anything into that. That’s just as high as Cole’s face goes.
cole's expecting trevor to get right back to hooking up with him, and trevor's not going to resist. meanwhile jamie still expects trevor to be hooking up with him. trevor sneaks in and out of bedrooms for an awkward few days. there was going to be a golf scene with cam york rounding out the foursome. i did not write any of this. here is an excerpt from my notes:
Need multiple instances of cole and jamie kind of flirting, or cole flirting with jamie and trevor able to tell that jamie likes it, and trevor’s kind of furious but he can’t say anything about it because he’s hooking up with both of them
eventually cole sees trevor sneaking out of jamie's bedroom and cole and jamie have a little talk and cole is unfazed and jamie's mind is blown. then here is the only bit i actually wrote:
It’s silent for a moment in the main room. Then Cole’s raspy voice says something, too low for Trevor to catch over the grind of the icemaker. He lifts his cup off the lever in time to hear Jamie bark a laugh in response. “Sure, yeah.” Trevor can see the TV from the refrigerator, but not the far side of the couch, where they’re sitting. He sloshes vodka over his ice, adds a splash of the first juice he sees, some pomegranate bullshit Trace left in the fridge, and rounds the corner just in time to see Cole climbing into Jamie’s lap. Kneeling over Jamie and smiling, always fucking smiling, he takes Jamie’s face in his hands and kisses him. “What the fuck?” Trevor says loudly, managing not to drop his drink on the floor. They ignore him so completely it has to be on purpose. Jamie’s eyes are closed, face tilted upward to Cole’s. Cole smiles against Jamie’s lips and rakes a hand backward through his hair, tipping Jamie’s head back so he can press in closer, kiss him deeper. Trevor knows what this is like from every possible angle. Knows what it’s like to have Cole in his lap, his smiling kisses, knows what’s under Jamie’s hands as they smooth down Cole’s back and settle on his ass. Knows what it’s like to get hard against Jamie’s stomach, feel Jamie hard underneath him. It’s like an out of body experience, seeing it all happen in front of him while he’s on the other side of the room. Jamie slips a hand under the hem of Cole’s tank top, and Trevor knows how the smooth muscles of his obliques feel, knows without even being able to see it that Jamie’s working a thumb under Cole’s waistband, rubbing it over his hipbone. He was first. He’s the tallest. And they’re just ignoring him.
i did also have some notes for the dialogue that eventually followed:
“And you could have told me you were banging your roommate now?”
“We’re not banging.”
“Oh, what are you calling it then?”
[] “Whatever you and I were doing.”
“Did Jamie get his dick sucked?”
“No?” Trevor says uncertainly, wriggling a little in Jamie’s lap. He would have sucked Jamie’s dick if he’d thought of it. That should count for something.
Jamie, patiently: “Nobody’s getting his dick sucked.”
“Trevor got his dick sucked and he owes me.”
Jamie tugs at his hair again. “I think he should pay up.”
“You can suck Jamie’s dick after. He did get silver.”
........i mean, maybe i could have made this dynamic work, if i'd gotten it written in that era. but probably not. i was much better served turning my attention to umich.

$21,000 Bill Because EV Battery Got Wet
Even the moonbats at Business Insider seem to realize that no matter how extravagant the subsidies, buying an electric car is not a good idea:
Johnny Bacigalupo and Rob Hussey told the Scottish news outlet Edinburgh Live they were billed £17,374, or about $21,000, to fix their Tesla after its battery was damaged by rain last week.
Even if you can afford one of these glorified golf carts, that doesn’t mean you can afford to keep it running. No wonder it costs so much more to insure an EV than a real car.
This has happened before:
A similar incident occurred last year when a Canadian Tesla owner was told it would cost $26,000 to get a replacement battery for his vehicle, Fox Business reported. The owner, Mario Zelaya, shared his experience in a TikTok video and said he was locked out of his Tesla Model S after the battery died. Zelaya said he eventually sold his Tesla after he spent $30 getting replacement ownership papers that were locked in the vehicle.
The media is more forthcoming regarding the shortcomings of EVs now that Elon Musk has gone rogue by allowing free speech on X.
The first and only thing you need to know about electric cars is that leftists want us to drive them. That is reason enough to steer clear.

Golf Inc. Magazine Judges Bestow “Development of the Year” Honor on Apes Hill Barbados
Distinction Complements Rave Reviews for Newly Opened Course at Luxury Resort Residential Community
A panel of judges for Golf Inc., the international trade publication that provides owners and operators with industry trends, insights, and best practices, has voted Apes Hill Barbados runner-up in its annual Development of the Year competition.
The best-in-kind award “recognizes the finest private clubs and daily fee/resort courses with the best new traditional and non-traditional golf courses (including short courses) that opened during the past year around the globe.”
Winners were judged according to how well the vision of the project was executed, the course aesthetics, economic and environmental sustainability, course routing and land usage. The judges were Darryl Bartlett, senior project manager at NMP Golf Construction Corp.; Casey Paulson, project president at Driftwood Golf and Ranch Club; Kevin Norby of Norby Golf Course Design; Mike Nuzzo of Nuzzo Course Design; and Tripp Davis, president of Tripp Davis and Associates.
Stated the three Development of the Year judges about Apes Hill Barbados in their appraisal:
“A wonderfully conceived and executed vision with a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability. Shaping of fairways, bunkers and green complexes are dramatic and unique.” – Kevin Norby
“Spectacular! Beautiful modern buildings, great golf, all in a luxury setting, this place has it going on!” – Darryl Bartlett
“Beautiful views in a tropical environment; impressive commitment to environmental sustainability.” – Casey Paulson
That the judges cited Apes Hill Barbados’ inspired vision and successful execution, commitment to environmental and sustainability best practices, and the scintillating golf course designed by Ron Kirby in this breath-taking setting is precisely what Apes Hill Barbados set out to accomplish.
Apes Hill Barbados is owned by Apes Hill (Barbados) Inc., a Barbadian company whose primary shareholder is Glenn J. Chamandy, a Canadian investor, founder, and CEO of leading clothing brand Gildan Activewear. Chamandy purchased the property in 2019 and embarked on an ambitious project to redefine golfing and estate living on the Caribbean Island.
“The Development of the Year honor is deeply appreciated because the judges touched on the essence of what is Apes Hill Barbados in their comments,” said Sunil Chatrani, Executive Chairman, Apes Hill Barbados. “We’ve taken great care to build a course and comprehensive golf experience that complements our first-class community. This is a place where people embrace the important things in life: family, friendships, health, and connection to nature.”
In addition to the Ron Kirby designed, 18-hole championship golf course, Apes Hill Barbados offers exceptional, complementary golf amenities including the short course, 19th hole, sleek clubhouse, and state-of-the-art Golf Performance Centre.
Apes Hill Barbados is a 475-acre property of incredible elegance located in the Parish of Saint James on the west coast of the culturally vibrant and historically rich Barbados. The island is famed for its history, beauty, designer shops and world class restaurants. It also boasts some of the best golf courses in the Caribbean, with Apes Hill rating No. 5 in the Caribbean, Mexico, Costa Rica, and the Atlantic Islands (Source: Golfweek’s “Best You Can Play”).
Sustainability is at the forefront of the resort’s long-term DNA – designed to make it the most environmentally responsible golf course and development in the Caribbean. Underscoring this mandate is Apes Hill Barbados’ work with Audubon International, the non-profit organization that helps places employ environmental best practices and protect the areas where people live, work, and play.
Golf fairways and tees have been re-laid using the more drought tolerant Zoysia Zorro grass and the greens with TifEagle. The resistance of these grasses to insects also further reduces the reliance on fertilization and use of pesticides, with a view to Apes Hill Barbados eventually becoming chemical-free.
Apes Hill Barbados has a uniquely tranquil atmosphere that provides the perfect setting for inspired living at a pace of ease. Home to a developing range of accommodation options, the elegant venue is home to a portfolio of stunning real estate on site alongside golf vacation properties set to allow guests to stay and play late this year or early next. There are several exquisitely designed residential options that offer something for everyone’s taste – from charming villas to brilliantly designed detached homes.
Amenities at Apes Hill Barbados will include a wellness centre, several kilometers of enchanting nature trails, flood-lit Padel courts, TigerTurf tennis courts, spa, dining, and bespoke outdoor and well-being activities as well as a dedicated concierge service, among other top-class amenities. Apes Hill Barbados’ golfing credentials are just as impressive – the 18-hole championship golf course that opened for play in November 2022, and the cutting-edge Golf Performance Centre debuted in January 2023.

A Breath of Fresh Air
Like many relationships these days, the love and security I’ve shared with nature have been dynamic, to say the least. Experiencing the highs. Experiencing the lows. Growing up in a big city like Toronto, I would be remiss to say the stage was set for a healthy and stable relationship. Going outside as a child and being met with construction, loud noise, and pollution would make connecting with the natural world difficult. Without recognizing the nuance between human nature and true nature, my relationship began on the wrong foot, and this disconnect illustrated a dysmorphic view of nature.
Navigating this treacherous terrain can sometimes feel overwhelming. Many young kids growing up in a real-life metropolis may find themselves lost, confused, and neglectful of nature. Finding a ‘sense of place’ was difficult. At least that was my experience.
Having role models that would go out of their way to show me the true beauty in nature, a value their role models taught them, would be critical in my developing relationship. As a 4th generation Canadian, the passing of wisdom down generations is nothing unheard of and it allowed me to establish and maintain a stable connection with my Irish Italian roots. This attachment contrasted with personal experiences of being a Canadian; giving me identity, and meaning.
My father would become that role model.
From a young age, my father would make significant attempts to kindle this love for the outdoors, values his uncle instilled in him. Taking me golfing, igniting my love for outdoor activities at the age of 6. Playing golf, gave me a space to calm down, a place to get some peace and quiet. Getting older, he would introduce me to camping and fly fishing. Standing quite literally waist-deep in nature in almost dead silence with only the white noise coming from the surrounding wildlife, it’s different. It is comforting. A feeling you can so easily be deprived of in modern life. These activities not only allowed me to appreciate the outdoors but enabled me quality time to spend with him as well myself.
My dad and I :)
A virtue that gets lost today is being able to take that step back and appreciate the things that mean the most. Whether that be the things you have, the things you are, the things you love, or whatever it may be. To me, nature was/is an IV line that connects me to a sense of self… A sense of place. Being equipped with this tool allows me to separate myself from routine life, connecting me to what I care about most. Appreciating where you are and who you are with. Not only does it allow you to truly value what means most to you, but it opens your eyes to the beauty around you. Now I am not saying I was 6 on a golf course when I first contemplated the meaning of life, although that would be familiar (this makes sense if you have ever played golf) … rather I would say it gave me a foundation, an outlet. Of which I have so desperately valued as I have gotten older. Whether life's getting stressful, or I am sad, or I am feeling overwhelmed, or when I feel lost, nature has been my escape. Sometimes it becomes easy to forget to breathe and being outdoors in the thick of it reminds me to quite literally take a breath of fresh air. A safe place that I could always rely on to be there when I need it most. A warm, beautiful, delicate place I can turn to when the world may feel cold, ugly and rigid.

After stepping away from playing hockey to birth both of her children, Packer became general manager for the Metropolitan Riveters and executive director of the Players Association where she earned a Forbes 30 under 30 award, becoming a leading voice in the fight for better working conditions, pay, and recognition for women’s hockey players. “Life as a professional athlete and a mom isn’t something you typically see represented, especially for queer families like ours, and that’s exactly why we created ‘Moms Who Puck,’” said co-host Madison Packer. “Anya and I are proud to bring our story and those of other trailblazers in sports and parenthood to listeners everywhere. We hope this podcast resonates with people, whether they’re parents, athletes, or anyone learning to balance life’s big moments.” Madison Packer is a professional ice hockey player, entering her tenth season in New York. She was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, where she first developed a passion for the sport at a young age. Packer went on to play at the University of Wisconsin, and after completing her collegiate career, she joined the New York Riveters of the National Women’s Hockey League in its inaugural season. She went on to become captain and a hallmark player for the Riveters during her eight seasons in the PHF. In 2023 the Professional Women’s Hockey League launched, and Packer joined PWHL New York in its inaugural season. Packer is a six-time All-Star, NCAA National Champion, two-time WCHA Champion, two-time u18 World Champion Gold Medalist, and Isobel Cup Champion. In addition to her success on the ice, Packer is a vocal advocate for women's hockey and is passionate about growing the sport and providing equal opportunities for young girls to play. She is known for her dedication to advocacy and has been involved in numerous charitable initiatives, using her platform to make a positive impact in both sport and her community. Check out Moms Who Puck. The show promotes women's sports participation, and the co-hosts have strong chemistry and wit as sharp as the skating blades they wore.

The 2024 Thrill of Possibility Summit was hosted by Nissan, iHeartRadio and Charlamagne Tha God’s Black Effect Podcast Network and took place last weekend at the National Museum of African American Music in Nashville, TN. The Black Effect Podcast Network and Nissan welcomed 50+ HBCU students from across the country to participate in a STEAM industry event featuring professional development and personal success panels, 1:1 mentoring sessions, informative iHeartMedia and Nissan internship discussions and networking opportunities with industry executives and notable HBCU alumni. Highlights included: “Your Culture as Your Advantage” panel discussed how to navigate career growth and workplace dynamics through the lens of culture, respect and authenticity. Moderated by Dollie S. Bishop, the panel featured Charlamagne Tha God, Ebone’ Almon, Chico Bean and Keri Kelly (Nissan). Charlamagne Tha God encouraged students to stay consistent and follow their dreams. Dollie S. Bishop spoke to students about the importance of professionalism. “Manners will get you where money won’t – I’m a testament. Being professional will get you into rooms that open doors. I haven’t applied for a job since my first internship because not only was I highly qualified, I made authentic connections and was professional at all times.” Nissan’s Keri Kelly talked about the critical importance of finding mentors early in your career. “Look for mentors you have an authentic connection with and form an organic relationship with them. Use those relationships to understand corporate environments and how to navigate corporate culture. Mentors can really help you along the way.” The “Trailblazing Your Post-Grad Journey” panel discussed strategies for setting clear career and personal goals, navigating the post-grad world, and laying the foundation to thrive in long-term success. Blavity CEO Morgan DeBaun told students to begin building their brands while in school. “When I consider potential hires, I don’t look at their resumes; I look at what they’ve built. Become a master at making things that people want to watch and share and something you’d be proud to show an employer one day.” Gil Beverly encouraged students to focus on building and maintaining relationships as they progress through life and their careers. “Very few jobs are rocket science jobs. It’s really about building relationships and finding people who are willing to take a chance on you. You never know where your next opportunity will come from.”
Brittany N. Cole talked about advocates in the workplace and finding value in rejection. “Make the hiring manager of the roles you don’t get your biggest advocate. Ask for feedback about why you didn’t get the role and implement it. Follow up with them consistently and showcase how you’ve used their feedback to grow professionally.”
Kudos to iHeart for their participation in this event. Maybe some of the other large podcast networks could get on board with similar events and programs?

Carstairs Community Golf Club may not have the recognition of Canada’s more famous courses, but it has earned a reputation for being one of the friendliest and most accessible clubs in Alberta. Golfers appreciate the combination of beautifully maintained fairways, scenic water features, and challenging layouts. What makes this club particularly special is its balance between offering a course challenging enough for experienced golfers while also being welcoming and manageable for beginners and casual players.
The club’s reputation also owes much to its community-oriented culture. Unlike some more exclusive courses, Carstairs is proud of its approachable and inclusive atmosphere, drawing visitors from across Alberta and beyond. Many patrons return each year not just for the golf, but for the camaraderie they find here. It’s this combination of great golfing and community spirit that has made Carstairs Community Golf Club a standout in the golfing world.
Best Time to Visit Carstairs Community Golf Club
Alberta’s climate means that the golf season at Carstairs typically runs from late spring through early fall, with peak times from May to September. The summer months offer the best golfing conditions, with warm, sunny days that make for pleasant afternoons on the green. In particular, July and August are ideal for visitors who want to experience the course in full bloom, with meticulously maintained fairways, mature trees, and stunning landscaping.
However, early autumn can also be an excellent time to visit, as the weather remains mild, and the fall foliage adds a beautiful touch to the scenery. Fall visits also tend to be less crowded, offering a more tranquil experience. To get the most out of your visit, it’s recommended to check the club’s website for seasonal updates, as weather conditions can impact course availability, especially in the shoulder seasons of April and October.
Activities at Carstairs Community Golf Club
While the main attraction at Carstairs Community Golf Club is, of course, the golf, there’s more to do here than just teeing off. Here’s a list of activities and amenities that make this club a worthwhile destination for the whole family:
Golfing: The 18-hole, par-72 course offers a range of challenges for golfers of all levels, including strategically placed bunkers, water hazards, and a mix of wide and narrow fairways. Each hole is unique, with varying levels of difficulty, making it an enjoyable experience for beginners and seasoned players alike.
Driving Range: The club’s driving range is a great place for warming up before hitting the course or for those looking to practice their swing. It’s ideal for beginners who want to build confidence before tackling the course.

This Makes A Long Drive Worth It - Kelowna & Lake Country, BC, CAN
We spent August 26th through the end of the month, enjoying the wonderful hospitality of our friends here in BC. After settling into our site at Holiday Park RV Resort on the 26th, we met up with Karen and Laurence for dinner and adult beverages at Turtle Bay Pub. (I forgot to take a picture, so you will just have to take my word that we had a great time.) Perfect start to our time in the area.
On the 27th, we started the day off with a bike ride with Ray and Cheri along the Okanagan Rail Trail. We had a nice cool day, saw lots of bear scat on the trail (luckily, no bears) on our ride up to Wood Lake. Ray ate enough chokecherries that we were a little worried that he might get sick!
After our ride, we met up with Karen and Laurence at Britannia Brewing. Awesome day!
The next day, August 28th, we played 9 holes of golf at Spallumcheen with Andy and Cheri. It was around $25 to walk 9 holes. The course is very lush, the greens were in good shape - we give the course a solid 8 stars out of 10. We had to skip a hole and a tee box due to bear activity on the course....a mama bear with twin cubs, one of the cubs wouldn't come down from the tree when mama left with the other cub. There was a lot of crying going on from the one stuck up in the tree and a very vigilant mama bear on the ground - didn't want to get between her and that cub!
It was awesome to see Andy again and to meet his new partner, Heather, later that evening. Thanks for hosting us, we look forward to seeing you in Tucson this fall.
After golf, we went to the country fair in Armstrong. It was quite the Canadian small-town experience. Goats, cows, pigs, lumberjack shows, and too many other exhibits to even mention, We had a fun time taking it all in:
Below is a Zebu Cow, the world's smallest and oldest breed of cow, dating back as far as 3000 BC:
After the fair, we went over to Andy and Heather's place for food and beverages. It was another great day in BC!
On the 29th, we went for a lovely hike in Scenic Canyon Regional Park with Ray, Cheri, and Karen. Beautiful area, lots of shade and cool things to see.
Great day in Scenic Canyon Regional Park - we were told that there was a mama bear with cubs on one of the trails in the park, but we didn't run into any wild animals on our hike!
On the 30th, we moved from Holiday Park to Ray and Cheri's driveway for the remainder of our stay in Kelowna.
After our move, we went and played a little golf with Cheri at a unique little 9-hole golf course in an apple orchard, Orchard Greens. It cost $29 to walk 9 holes - the fairway and greens were pretty rough, lots of trees (hey, it was in an apple orchard!) and narrow fairways. We would give this course 4 stars out of 10, but we think you should go play it, if you are visiting Kelowna. You can play night golf on the course, which would be a fun/unique experience!
Thanks for thinking of this course, Cheri! Great fun!
The next day, August 31st, we drove to Kaleden, BC and played St. Andrews By The Lake with Laurence and Cheri. This pretty and challenging course cost us $30 to walk 9 holes. The layout was fun, making for some uniquely challenging holes - one par 3 was a huge carry over the water - not reachable for 3 of us! We gave this course 6 stars out of 10, we liked the layout on some of the holes, but not so much on some of the other holes. The location was awesome and we can now say that we played at "St. Andrews"! We ended the day with dinner with the gang at Al and Cindi's place - good times! Thank you guys for hosting a fun evening at your beautiful place (photo at the beginning of this post).
Oops, I have used up my photo limit for one post....so I will continue our Kelowna adventures on the next one.

Maximizing Longevity and Performance in Golf: The Synergy Between Exercise, Nutrition, and Wellness
Introduction:
Golf is often seen as a sport that can be enjoyed well into the later years of life, making it unique compared to many other athletic pursuits. However, while golf may not seem as physically taxing as other sports, it places distinct demands on the body that require attention to both fitness and nutrition. For golfers looking to maximize their longevity, maintain high performance, and enjoy a long, healthy life on and off the course, the combination of exercise and nutrition cannot be overstated. At SHIFT TRAINING, we are committed to helping you unlock your full potential and live vibrantly with a balance of physical activity and proper nutrition.
The Benefits of Regular Exercise
It’s no secret that regular exercise offers tremendous benefits for our overall health. From cardiovascular health to musculoskeletal fitness, staying active is key to maintaining vitality, particularly as we age. Golfers, in particular, can experience significant improvements in their game by maintaining a consistent exercise routine.
According to extensive research published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, there is “irrefutable evidence” that exercise significantly lowers the risk of a range of chronic illnesses, including heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. In fact, physical inactivity is often listed as one of the major risk factors for these conditions. For golfers, who spend significant time walking and swinging clubs, exercise goes beyond disease prevention—it directly translates to better performance, increased stamina, and reduced injury risk.
Cardiovascular Health
Cardio exercise such as walking, jogging, or swimming improves heart health, helping you maintain stamina for those long rounds of golf. Walking the course, rather than relying on a golf cart, can provide a great cardiovascular workout. According to research, walking 18 holes equates to covering 4-5 miles, which is a substantial contribution to your daily physical activity goals.
Muscle Strength and Flexibility
A strong and flexible body is key to maintaining a smooth and powerful golf swing. Strength training exercises, particularly those that target the core, back, and legs, help golfers maintain proper form and generate greater force when hitting the ball. Flexibility exercises, such as yoga or dynamic stretching, prevent stiffness and ensure that muscles are supple, reducing the risk of injury and enhancing range of motion.
Balance and Coordination
Balance is a crucial aspect of golf, and exercises that challenge your balance can improve your golf swing mechanics. Incorporating balance-focused workouts, such as stability ball exercises or single-leg activities, into your routine helps enhance coordination, translating to more consistent and accurate shots on the golf course.
Nutrition:The Building Blocks of Optimal Performance
While exercise forms one half of the wellness equation, nutrition is the other crucial element. Proper nutrition not only fuels the body but also supports recovery and injury prevention. For golfers aiming to maintain peak performance, a balanced diet is essential to optimizing energy levels, enhancing focus, and supporting overall well-being.
Macronutrients: Carbs, Proteins, and Fats
For athletes, including golfers, the three main macronutrients—carbohydrates, proteins, and fats—play specific roles in fueling performance and recovery. Carbohydrates are the body's main energy source, especially during long rounds. Foods like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables provide the necessary fuel to maintain stamina throughout the day.
Protein, on the other hand, is vital for muscle repair and recovery. After a strenuous workout or round of golf, incorporating high-quality proteins such as lean meats, fish, eggs, and plant-based options helps rebuild muscle tissue and prevent fatigue.
Healthy fats, found in nuts, seeds, avocados, and olive oil, are important for overall cell function and maintaining energy levels during prolonged periods of activity.
Micronutrients: Vitamins and Minerals
In addition to macronutrients, golfers must focus on their intake of essential vitamins and minerals. Micronutrients such as vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, and potassium play key roles in bone health, muscle function, and overall vitality. For instance, magnesium helps regulate muscle contractions, while potassium balances fluid levels, helping to prevent cramping during prolonged physical exertion.
Vitamin D and calcium are particularly important for bone health. Given that golf requires significant rotation through the spine, hips, and shoulders, maintaining strong bones is essential for preventing stress fractures or joint issues.
Hydration
Dehydration can negatively impact focus, coordination, and stamina. Given that a round of golf can take several hours, it’s crucial to stay properly hydrated before, during, and after playing. Water should be the go-to beverage, but electrolytes, particularly sodium and potassium, are also essential, especially in warmer climates. Without adequate hydration, even small imbalances in your body’s fluid levels can lead to decreased performance and increased injury risk.
The Role of Supplements in Supporting Performance
Despite our best efforts to maintain a well-rounded diet, it can be difficult to meet all our nutritional needs through food alone, especially for athletes or those with demanding schedules. Nutritional supplements can fill in these gaps, providing essential nutrients that support fitness goals, boost recovery, and enhance physical performance.
The Peak Performance Pack
One supplement we recommend at SHIFT TRAINING is the Peak Performance Pack, which has been clinically proven to reduce free radicals in the body. Free radicals, if left unchecked, can cause oxidative stress, leading to premature aging, muscle fatigue, and a decline in physical performance. By combating oxidative stress, the Peak Performance Pack can help extend both lifespan and quality of life.
In two separate human clinical studies, the Peak Performance Pack was shown to significantly reduce the presence of free radicals. The antioxidants in this supplement, such as vitamins C and E, along with plant-based compounds like flavonoids, help neutralize these harmful molecules, protecting the body from oxidative damage. For golfers, this means enhanced recovery times, less inflammation, and improved endurance.
Incorporating supplements such as the Peak Performance Pack into your routine allows you to address nutritional deficiencies, enabling your body to perform at its best. We firmly believe that every client at SHIFT TRAINING should experience the transformative benefits of this product.
Exercise and Nutrition for Longevity
Longevity in golf, and life in general, is largely determined by the choices we make regarding our health and wellness. By committing to regular exercise and maintaining a balanced, nutrient-rich diet, you can drastically reduce the risk of age-related diseases and improve your quality of life for decades to come.
At SHIFT TRAINING, we encourage our clients to focus on the following strategies for lasting wellness:
Consistency is Key:
Whether it’s regular gym sessions, a home workout, or simply walking the golf course more often, consistency in physical activity is essential for building and maintaining fitness over time.
Progressive Strength Training:
Resistance training, particularly focusing on core strength, helps golfers maintain posture and reduce the risk of injury. Strong muscles also support better golf performance, allowing for longer drives and more stability through each swing.
Dynamic Flexibility:
Stretching before and after your workouts or rounds of golf is key to preventing stiffness and injury. Dynamic stretching, which involves moving your muscles and joints through their full range of motion, ensures that your body remains limber and ready for the physical demands of golf.
Adequate Recovery:
Taking rest days and ensuring you get proper sleep allows your body to recover from the stresses of physical activity. Nutrition also plays a critical role in recovery; consuming the right balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fats after workouts ensures that your body can repair itself and be ready for the next round.
Mindful Eating:
Fueling your body with high-quality, nutrient-dense foods gives you the energy you need for peak performance. We encourage you to focus on whole foods that are rich in essential nutrients, while also considering supplements that can support your specific health goals.
Conclusion:
Embrace the Journey Toward Wellness
By focusing on regular exercise, proper nutrition, and smart supplementation, golfers can experience not only enhanced performance but also a longer, healthier life. At SHIFT TRAINING, we’re here to help you on your journey toward optimal wellness—whether it’s improving your golf game, maintaining fitness as you age, or simply living a more active lifestyle. Together, we can unlock your full potential and ensure that you enjoy every round of golf for years to come.

Luxury Lifestyle Awards is a global award recognizing the best luxury places, goods, and services globally. Luxury Lifestyle Awards has evaluated more than 10,000 entities in 400 categories from 60 countries and analyzed the results to glean the world’s finest luxury places and things.
“These awards are immensely important and deeply appreciated because environmental and sustainability best practices are essential to Apes Hill Barbados,” said Sunil Chatrani, Executive Chairman, Apes Hill Barbados. “We’ve taken great care to design a living experience that is of premium quality for individuals, couples and families looking for a setting that helps them prioritize the important things in life: family, friendships, health, and connection to nature. That is what life at Apes Hill Barbados is all about.”
Apes Hill Barbados has a uniquely laid back and tranquil atmosphere that provides the perfect setting for inspired living at a pace of ease. There are several residential options available, including The Hilltop Residences, which are contemporary single-story golf course homes overlooking the par-3 course and 19th hole all while offering westerly vistas. Other options include three-bedroom Courtyard Villas and detached homes in Seaview Ridge that enjoy uninterrupted views and overlook the first fairway.
Apes Hill Barbados’ golfing credentials are just as impressive – the 18-hole championship golf course was designed by the legendary Ron Kirby and opened for play in November 2022, and the state-of-the-art Golf Performance Centre debuted last month.
Apes Hill Barbados is also home to a developing range of accommodation options, with a portfolio of stunning real estate on site alongside golf vacation properties set to allow guests to stay and play from later this year.
