The Stage - Thursday 01 December 1994
In Jimmy Nail's Crocodile Shoes James Wilby plays a music business Machiavelli, but his own rock'n'roll fantasies are played out well away from the public eye. Wilby, who plays Adrian Lynn in the seven part series, says that he is a passionate piano player and loves all music "from opera to rap."
But he would never dream of imposing on a wider audience the music that he and a group of friends belt out when they get together. "I play the piano and I have a friend I met at university who plays a guitar. We get together with some others as often as we can, four or five of us," he explains.
"It's not a band, we just play for ourselves. It's one of the most enjoyable things you can do, to play music with other people. But it has never occurred to me to do anything else, and even when I was younger I never wanted to be a rock'n'roll star."
As he prepared for his role as music manager Lynn, Wilby was given even more cause to maintain music as nothing more than a hobby. He immersed himself in the real life music industry spending time with record producers and A&R talent scouts in a bid to understand Lynn's world.
"I researched A&R men. One of the problems in the music industry over the last few years has been that everything is so short lived. There is a new little phase or fad every few weeks," he says.
"It changes very quickly. I think it's a tougher industry than mine, I think we can afford the odd failure. It does seem to discard so many people. I could really sense the pressure the A&R man I met was under."
His role in Crocodile Shoes is a departure for the actor whose best known roles have been far removed from gritty realism. In 1987 he won international recognition when he starred as Maurice in the Merchant Ivory adaptation of E M Forster's story about a Cambridge homosexual.
The film also starred Hugh Grant, Denholm Elliott and Billie Whitelaw. A year later he starred in another production of an English literary classic, A Handful of Dust alongside Angelica Huston, Alec Guinness and Rupert Graves and the Oscar winning Howard's End followed in 1992.
On television too he has been associated with a number of costume dramas including A Tale of Two Cities, Adam Bede and Lady Chatterley. So Wilby sees Crocodile Shoes as a perfect opportunity to broaden his repertoire of roles and change people's perception of him as an actor permanently in period dress.
"I like what I have done but as an actor I want to have the biggest possible range. I have done quite a lot of modern, middle class men like You Me and It for the BBC, but the big hits have been period films and people remember those," he says. "You need-in this profession to be in a good high profile film or series to change your image. That's what I'm hoping this will do. The profession does not like to make risky casting too often. There's a thin line between inspired casting and bad casting. And we've got a lot of good actors in this country."
He says that he enjoyed working with Jimmy Nail, not only in terms of acting but also because Nail wrote the series. "I've never worked with someone who has actually written something. It means that you cannot start changing things left, right and centre not that I wanted to, I don't think I changed anything my character said," he says.
"I'm very choosy about what I do and one of the things that appealed to me about this was the writing. I thought Jimmy was absolutely spot on with the words that Adrian Lynn had."
Crocodile Shoes' central characters travelled to America and Nashville to pursue their dreams but Wilby has yet to fall for the temptation of heading west to Hollywood in pursuit of the bigger roles.
"I will go there when I am invited but I am not going there to sit around for three or four months," he says, adding that he will wait "with interest" to see whether Crocodile Shoes wins him any new admirers.

When Dr Harold Young [...] takes visitors on a journey around Belize City, the first stop is an unremarkable building, whose basement entrance is partly shrouded by creeping pink bougainvillea. Its padlocked gates and broken windows back on to a parking lot in the city’s historic centre. Most passersby ignore the innocuous plaque outside. Belize, a country of 400,000 citizens, is [...] a part of the English-speaking Caribbean. A former British settlement and then colony, it is one of the region’s eight remaining Commonwealth realms – independent countries where the monarch remains the head of state.
Belize is the only Commonwealth realm King Charles has never visited.
The building is blocked from public entry but is known locally as the former headquarters of a TV station [...] once owned by the Conservative peer Lord Michael Ashcroft, who has sprawling business investments around Belize. But for those who are aware, the building serves as a horrifying reminder of the brutality of British rule here. “It’s the last remnants of a holding dungeon for slaves,” Young says. “Before they were put out for sale.”
Unlike the island states in the Caribbean, where plantation slavery underpinned the colonial economy, enslaved labour in Belize revolved around the logging of mahogany at camps in the country’s interior. [...] [T]he remnants of violent enslavement are now mostly absent from public view. The building’s story has been passed down for generations, and is noted in certain tourist literature. But the historic plaque outside, while acknowledging its use in the mahogany trade, presents its connections to slavery merely as “local folklore”. “When you live in a colonial environment, the colonialists don’t want you to prove what they were doing was a horrendous trade, right?” says Young, who is Belizean Creole, meaning of mixed African heritage. [...]
---
History is still not fully told. Crimes remain unacknowledged. [...]
But as the United Kingdom prepares to crown its new king, the citizens of Belize are laying the groundwork for a similarly historic event: they could be the first nation to remove Charles as head of state. [...] The process, the prime minister [...] acknowledged in an interview [...] means it is “quite likely” that Belize will be the next country to leave the Commonwealth realm, following Barbados’s seismic decision to become a republic in 2021. [...] Belize is not alone [...].
[D]iscussions over the future of the British monarchy have accelerated throughout the region.
Now, officials in seven of the remaining realm countries in the Caribbean have indicated they will seek to follow the same path [...]. In Jamaica, [...] the government has committed to a vote before the next general election in 2025. In Antigua and Barbuda, the prime minister [...] said shortly after the death of Queen Elizabeth that he would hold a referendum within three years. [...]
Such debate is far from new to the English-speaking Caribbean and did not begin with Barbados’s decision in 2021, nor the death of Queen Elizabeth last year. Carried by a wave of Black nationalism and socialism, three former British colonies, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and the newly independent Dominica, removed the monarch as head of state throughout the 1970s. Alternatives to the crown had been debated in popular circles long before even then. [...]
---
Still, symbolism and imagery of the current moment [...] matter, particularly as relations between the English-speaking Caribbean and the UK fall to new lows in the aftermath of the Windrush scandal and both the government and the monarchy’s recent refusals to go beyond passive expressions of regret and offer a formal apology for the atrocities of slavery.
In March last year, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s visit to the Caribbean marking the Queen’s jubilee was punctuated by a series of protests that cast a long shadow over the exercise in soft power. In Jamaica, photographs of the pair shaking hands with children through a chainlink fence and later parading in white clothing in an open-top Land Rover were decried as a throwback to colonialism.
In Belize, the couple were forced to abandon plans to visit a Mayan village in the country’s south, following protest. [...] “There’s only so much the fig leaf of public relations and exercises in ‘soft power’ can cover,” [...]. “These images and videos were widely shared on social media [...].” Outside St John’s Cathedral in Belize City, the remains of a semicircular brick wall mark the boundary from where, it is said, enslaved people were permitted to listen to services inside. The building itself was built by enslaved labour, but colonial authorities banned enslaved people from entering.

The Cambridge Memes(Now The Wales Memes)on Instagram here. I wrote this story almost 2 years ago when Catherine announced her Early Years Project for the first time in June, 2021. Wanted to share this story now as Catherine is going to announce new initiatives with her Early Years Project later in January and that we got to know how William had helped her with it. I hope you will love to read this story as much as I loved to wrote it❤️
Greatest Support
Catherine's POV
I took a deep breath once again and practiced my speech one last time. In less than 10 minutes I was going to record a video message for my biggest ever project Early Years. I had been waiting for this day by 10 years. I had practiced my speech for a thousand times! Still I felt like I wasn't prepared at all!
"Catherine... the camera is ready" - I startled as my secretary called.
"Coming...", that's all I could say. I looked at myself in the mirror and then left my office room.
William's POV
".... No, I'm not going to the match... umm.. you can say personal matters.. uh-huh... yes.. okay", I hung up the call and sighed in relief and right then someone knocked at my door and no one had to tell me who it was!
"Babe?", I asked and my wife appeared at the door, "Are you busy?", she asked and smiled nervously.
"Am I ever busy when you need me?"
She tried not to giggle, "Don't flirt, William", she said and approached me, "I'm going to record my speech now but hell... I'm horribly nervous!"
I got up and went closer to her and took her hands into mine, "You'll do excellent", I said.
She sighed quietly, "I just hope that I won't mumble"
"Catherine, mumbling is not a big issue. Don't let it make you feel less than you actually are. You're doing such an amazing job and a few mumbling is nothing to it", I said and smiled.
Catherine's eyes brightened up in a second and she smiled broadly, "I think you're right", she said and hugged me tightly. I caressed her back and kissed her on hair, "Go on... you'll be fine"
She looked at me again and squeezed my hands, "I know it's childish but can you stay behind the camera when I'll record my speech?", she asked and chuckled softly.
"I will", I replied and smiled again, "Let's go"
Catherine's POV
".... and we go"
The flash made me blind for a few seconds and I started giving my speech. I don't know how it went!
"... Because I truly believe big change starts small"
I stopped and the flashlight turned off.
"Is it okay?", I asked almost whispering.
"Amazing!", I heard my husband said and he even clapped that made me blush like a teenaged girl! He approached me and took me into his arms, "You won't believe how good it was", he said and smiled.
"Really?", I asked and couldn't hold back my happy giggle!
"Really really", William said and smiled again.
"I think your presence helped me", I said then and winked that made William laughed.
William's POV
Today is the day Catherine would launch her Centre for Early Childhood. She was extremely nervous again about the reaction of the people. Even our kids noticed her nervousness on the breakfast table.
"Is something wrong, mummy?", George asked and held her hand.
She smiled a bit, "No, sweetheart", she said and tried to focus on her meals.
"Everything's going to be fine, Catherine", I tried to assure her, "Everyone's already loved your initiative. Today they will love it even more"
"I hope so", she said quietly.
An hour passed by in a blink of an eye and Catherine launched her project finally with her recorded speech and I became the proudest husband ever once again! Less than a few minutes I saw all the praises she received, how she smiled, how she succeeded and I couldn't help embracing her and telling her that I was extremely proud of her. I can't lie that I even got tears to realise again how my shy wife has grown into her role and how she has curved her future. It wasn't possible to fall in love with her even more and yet I did!
Catherine's POV
As I was doing a finishing touch on my make up for my engagement at London School of Economics where I would have a roundtable meeting about my project, I could feel a pair of blue eyes looking at me!
"Caught you!", I said and grinned.
William startled and laughed shyly and then looked into my eyes, "You're looking gorgeous, my wife", he said.
"You're flirting again!", I said, "Come here, help me putting the necklaces"
"That would be my pleasure", William said and came closer behind me. I gave him the necklaces. He gently put them on one by one and then placed his chin on my shoulder and wrapped his arms around my waist.
"What?", I asked as looking at him through the mirror.
"Have I told you lately that I'm so proud of you?", he whispered and I trembled a bit. I turned around to face him, "You have", I whispered too and caressed his cheek. He smiled and kissed me on forehead, "I love you..", he whispered again and now I had got some tears but I controlled it. I smiled before kissing my William on lips tenderly. I couldn't done anything without his constant support and inspiration, without his words that made me believe that I could go on. I wish this kiss was longer but I had to leave now.
"Wish me luck", I said then.
"You don't need luck!",William said and tucked my hair behind my ear. I smiled again and quickly put on my earrings and bracelet - both were gifts from my husband that make me feel his presence where he can't be with me!
When I came back home after the meeting, it was almost 6 in the evening. The meeting was a successful one and I couldn't be happier. But I had such a stressful week and all I needed was a cuddle with William but I knew it wasn't possible. William was supposed to be at the match of England vs Scotland of Euro2020. I sighed as I entered into our apartment and what I first caught was a burning smell. I ran towards the kitchen and I wasn't ready to see what I saw!
My William was standing there in an apron covered with various colours of spices! He grinned at me, "Don't worry, I didn't burn the dinner... it was just a few spices that fell into the stove!", he said and approached me, "Can't hug you, I'm sweating and I stink...", he said, "But I can kiss you!", he added and drew a kiss on my forehead, "How was the meeting?"
I breathed, "It was great", I replied, "But how come you're here and not at the match?", I asked, I wasn't over the shock yet.
William's POV
I grinned, "Well, yes I was supposed to go at the match but then I saw my wife at her engagement and she looked damn sexy! I couldn't miss a moment with her when she'd be back home!"
"William... stop it!", Catherine said and punched on my arm.
I laughed a bit, "Okay, I cancelled going out for the match the other day because I wanted to spend this moment with you and surprise you with a dinner date. My bad, I couldn't finish cooking before your arrival", I said as I picked up the pan from the stove. Catherine stared at me for a few seconds and smiled before giving me a big squeezy hug!
"Thank you", she whispered and looked into my eyes. I smiled and caressed her cheek, "You were just amazing at the launch of Centre for Early Childhood. You were glowing and shining and you don't know how proud I am of you", I whispered and tears formed into my wife's eyes that I wiped away swiftly and smiled again, "Dinner's ready. I cooked curry for you, a little less spicy, consider it, please"
Catherine giggled a bit, "Okay, I'll consider that... Where's the kids?", she asked then.
"Our kids have so grown up and they felt that their parents caught some teenage vibes tonight! So they're staying at their room after finishing dinner", I replied and smiled. Catherine smiled too and helped me taking off the apron.
"Give me 5 minutes. I'll take a quick shower and will have dinner together then", I said.
Catherine's POV
"How's it?", William asked as I took the first spoon of the curry that he cooked for me. He was never a good cook but surprisingly he made it really good today!
"Delicious!", I said and looked at him. He chuckled shyly, "Who's flirting now?!"
"Oh no, it really is. See yourself", I said and almost fed him a spoon of curry.
"Ummhmm... that's shocking!", he said and chuckled again.
When we finished our dinner, William poured two glasses of red wine and we sat down in the living room as snuggling into each other.
"Toast to the successful Early Years and toast to all the hard works of my amazing wife", he said as we clinked our glasses and gently kissed on my lips. I smiled and tried not to get tears again. A whispering 'Thank you' was all I could said as we intertwined our fingers and I laid my head on his shoulder. 10 years ago when I started to work on my project for the very first time, I didn't know I would carry on until this. I still remember all the criticism, accusations of being 'lazy' as I didn't 'rock on the ground' for years. I remember all those comparisons with William's mother and how I wanted to give up. But my man never let me do it. He believed what I could and today I did...
[The End]
Thank you!!! <3 You will make a lot of people very happy lovely

Today was a truly eventful day!
It was rainy when I woke up, to such an extent that we also had some very thick fog! My parents were scared that I had to drive in such contidions (being honest, I was a bit hesitant at first, too) but dad told me to drive the white Panda (the new one!!) and I had a blast driving to Plaza Mayor and the station!
I love my yellow Pan Pan, my banana-mobile...but that car is SO much fun to drive! This one has buetooth connectivity so I can play my music on the car's sound system. I know that's not a big deal nowadays, but my Pan-Pan is 17 years old, so it only has a cd player and the radio. Also, the gears are so smooth!! My car is way rougher, even though I'm more used to it's "character" and I kind of like being able to really feel how the gears and engine work. However, my car gives me better visibility. The wheel in this newer one is a bit too high for me, even in the lowest setting 🥲
So I parked the car and had my breakfast there, while I watched the rain and heard some audios from my friends. My tea bag broke as I was finishing...ugh!
Once I was done, I went to the station and took the short distance train to city centre. I really love doing that.
Thankfully, I had no problem finding the building where I was supposed to have my revision. On top of that, everybody there was so helpful!! And...good news! I can go back to work starting on Friday!! My boss would have preferred today...but I'm happy to have some time to rest and to get used to the idea of a new routine.
Once I'd finished, I went back to the train and headed to Plaza Mayor! Mum had asked me to buy her fave shampoo, and I wanted to get a new sweatshirt to keep warm and cozy at home...and I found it! It's fluffy and amazing...I had seen the same one on the internet, and they still had one in my size 🥹
Then I went home and had lunch, and after that started my evening of productivity! I answered some work emails, made apple sauce from scratch, cleaned the birds, and even had time to draw and prepare the next assignment of my writing course! I'm so happy I'm being creative again...and I'm trying new skills I had been too scared to try before!
I'm also designing two personalised stamps for my classes! One will be the typical "great job!" one, but with my face on it (yeah! My students are going to love it) and the other is a rubric to make my marking of the Cambridge writing tasks easier.
Just as I was about to have dinner and call it a day, I had what I call a Bilbo moment when one of my colleagues phoned me. She had locked herself out of the academy! So I drove there with my set of keys and let her back in! That was an adventure...and I was so hungry 😆
In the end, I drew some more, and here I am, way past my bedtime because I've decided to try new clothes on my dolls :D
Oh! And I opened my advent calendar! The two first windows because I'm hopeless and forgot the first two days! Bob, my elf on the shelf, is guarding it.
