Economics of Climate Change

Climate change is the single most critical planetary threat that societies face today, as all 4 standard indicators of climate change reached new peaks in 2021-22. Concentrations of GHG reached record levels in 2021 –> CO2 concentrations in 2021 were 415.7 parts per million (ppm), methane at 1908 parts per billion (ppb) and nitrous oxide at 334.5 ppb and so did global sea level rising at an average of 4.5 mm per year. Top 2 km of oceans continued to warm in 2021 and the ocean waters have acidified increasingly absorbing 23% of CO2 emissions. The ecological consequences of climate change are worrying enough but a bigger worry are its socio economic repercussions as it affects production, GDP and public welfare globally. But before that we must understand that main countries responsible for climate change are the developed countries of Europe and US, though they try to blame the poverty and population density of developing countries.

And there are 3 primary causes of climate change: (a) Industrialisation (b) Colonisation and (c) Consumerism. The countries with higher levels of industrialisation are emitting higher levels of carbon. US alone is responsible for 25% of the global GHG emissions followed by China, Europe and the African nations. Ongoing ecological colonization or ownership of natural resources by the developed world also lead to carbon emissions from the developing world. Moreover, according to a UN report, developed countries account for 24% of the world population, but consume approximately 70% of the world’s energy, 75% of the world’s metals, 85% of the wood, 60% of food and 85% of chemicals.

The way forward is: (a) Sustainable and Equitable development (b) Decarbonising the atmosphere and (c) Climate Justice. Promoting a Production and Growth pattern while preserving the Environment is Sustainable Development. Equitable development would help eradicate poverty without harming the environment. The more we enforce use of Renewable Energy, the more we would succeed in Decarbonising the atmosphere. There are 3 aspects of Climate Justice : (a) Reparatory (b) Compensatory and (c) Obligatory. The principle of common but differential responsibilities and respective capabilities (CBDR&RC), creation of global climate fund and the idea to set up Loss & Damage Fund reflect the same. But, implementation has been weak.

Ancient icons of their past coming to life after millennia.  A world and moon clearly inhabited and rich with resources not seen beyond their home.  Or at least for the moment.  Andustar's latest track of it pointed to the red moon being drawn deeper into Arda's gravity well and for no reason that could be attributed to natural explanations.  There were the great mysteries of existence and there were these.  Nothing about these mysteries could be happenstance.  Nothing about the fall of the red moon could be natural.  The precision with which all things were occurring as the White Fleet came to this place itself could only be purposeful.

Benjimir sat back in his reclining chair in front of his quarters generous viewing panel.  His eyes immediately caught the red moon.  He knew crews throughout the White Fleet had given names to it, all of ill omen and foreboding from beyond living memory.  He had his own preferred term for the moon he did not give voice too but he shared the consensus feeling about the angry dot in space.  He looked at a viewer and accessed the latest metrics status from Andustar.  "Moon holding CBDR relative to Arda 922 track point of intercept, 05:14:3291 GR.  Dossimir disturbances consistent and growing."

Shifting the viewers screen Benjimir began to tap out outlines of orders.  He knew the rumors running through the Keepers divisions.  He knew the anecdotal comments passed onto him from off-watch officers and station minders.  By mid-watch the next day Keeper Miegs would have a well formed report she had been writing in parts few days compiled into a full report.  It would detail disturbances in their communication systems, which were based on Dossimir Effect crafting, that kindred signals were detectable but undecipherable at that time.  The structure would make it leave no question of the crafting skills of whomever the peoples were giving life to the lights, roads and settlements on Arda 922.

All of these details would make the orders he drafted and immediately ordered seem prophetic and impactful.

Hampshire's Ipley Cross is a notorious crossroads where cyclists keep getting hit and even killed by motorists, despite the mostly level terrain around the place where two roads cross each other at a seemingly innocuous angle.

But the crossroads have the bad luck to be at 69 degrees to each other, an angle that, when combined with the blind-spot created by the driver's front pillar and a well-understood navigational hazard called "constant bearing, decreasing range" means that frequently, the first time a driver and a cyclist will see each other is a second or two before the car strikes the bicycle.

CBDR "is the phenomenon whereby two vessels, or vehicles, moving at steady speeds in straight lines towards a collision will maintain the same bearing" -- and it's well understood in aviation and nautical navigation, but is not taught to drivers, who are less prone to driving at a constant speed under normal road conditions.

Thanks to CBDR, a driver approaching the intersection at reasonably safe speeds of 37mph have a series of blind spots that coincide with the location of an oncoming cyclist traveling between 13.5mph and 17.5mph.

What's more, the tricky angle at which the roads meet means that an oncoming car is continuously approaching the cyclist from behind, invisible unless the cyclist looks over their shoulder.

Drivers who move their heads significantly while approaching this seemingly wide-open crossroads can avoid this trap, but that's hard to enforce. Alternately, the road engineers could put a kink in the highway that forces a stop and turn before proceeding through the junction.
