“I remember when...” Yeah, I use that phrase a lot in my blogs. That’s what happens when you get old and have been doing the same thing for a long time. I remember a lot of stores and restaurants that no longer exist. I remember when stores first started staying open for 24 hours. I remember when supermarkets only carried 20,000 different items, not 45,000.
And I remember when a young whippersnapper by name of Jeff Bezos moved his wife and dog to Seattle to start an e-commerce company out of his garage. Cadabra was the name, but he quickly realized that the reference to magic was too obscure, and quickly changed it to Amazon.
We are rapidly approaching Amazon’s 26th birthday on 5th July, and what started in a man cave has now become a global retail giant. JP Morgan predicts that Amazon will overtake Walmart as the United States’ largest retailer in 2022.
And you have to wonder if Walmart founder, Sam Walton, is turning over in his grave.
If anything, the prospects of someone overtaking Walmart, which was unheard of a few years ago, demonstrate that nothing is permanent, except for change. Someday someone we haven’t yet met will topple both Amazon and Walmart, and the retail scene will be all the better for it.
JP Morgan uses an industry metric known as gross merchandise volume,which fairly closely mirrors sales. In terms more accessible for everyone, Walmart’s US sales were $341.0 billion for fiscal 2020, while Amazon’s sales were $318.41 billion. The numbers are narrowing, and it won’t be long.
Of course, we cannot ignore a pandemic that pushed most Americans online, either to shop at Amazon, or to order groceries online at Walmart. Amazon wants a bigger piece of the grocery business, while Walmart seeks more online sales of everything non-food. It’s a battle of two giants, and in spite of Walmart’s dramatic strides in e-commerce last year--something it never really could figure out over the last 25 years--Amazon is indeed likely to emerge from the battle victorious.
All of which is amazing for a company that has only a handful of brick and mortar stores, compared to Walmart’s more than 4000. Instead, it has a rapidly growing network of warehouses and distribution centers across the country, as evidenced by the 800,000-square foot rectangle being built on Amarillo’s northeast side. (As an aside for my marketing students near Amarillo, I understand that Amazon is hiring to fill a lot of high-paying jobs in our field. Check it out.)
While I still like to hand-pick my fresh food, and actually like perusing the shelves for obscure spices, sauces, and the like, everything else is fair game for two-day delivery. My dogs know the USPS, UPS, and FedEx drivers, and welcome them practically daily, a social commentary on the evolution of buying if there ever were one.
But you know what? If Walmart could get its online grocery business up to my exacting standards (I keep hearing of unwanted substitutions and other errors), I could be persuaded. The question is whether I would also order food from Amazon, which thus far has only done well with its Whole Foods division.
Amazon’s big gambit has been moving into its own delivery operations, which is proving to be advantageous. With plans to have 100,000 EV vans on the road, they will be even more ubiquitous than the big brown trucks that once handled the majority of their sales. Never mind the fleet of cargo ships plying the Pacific, intermodal containers, and jets. Sheesh, these guys want to rule the world.
While Jeff Bezos is stepping down as CEO, and is now more engaged with flying into space and auctioning off the shotgun seat for $28 million, he will forever be remembered as the man who made it happen. Just like Sam Walton a few decades before him, we’re talking about revolutionaries with a vision.
I just wonder who’s next. And I will be able to one day say--again--I remember when.
