Knight of Dawn, Chapter 2 [Not Your Typical Fairytale]
Tumblr media
TW for mentions of disease/zombies/infected, gore. Chapter below the cut!
Sneaking out of the Palace had become progressively easier for Piers, especially after Dr. Panya accidentally figured out. Xe’d spotted them trying to slip out of Garage entry when they were 16, and had chewed them out for hours. Since then, xe’d always been their backup if they ever left.
Piers pulled on thermal clothes under loose cargo pants and a t-shirt. The cold February air would be brutal, and they hated being cold.
From the kitchenette fridge, Piers grabbed some leftovers they’d taken from downstairs, shoving the plastic containers into their backpack. On top, they slipped a few books and their important supplies in case they got caught with their metaphorical pants down. Piers briefly patted themselves down to double check for their pistol, always holstered on their right side, and their knife, on their lower left leg. Grady made sure they could always defend themself in case of emergency ,From the back of their closet, they grabbed their primary weapon of choice outside the Perimeter, a lightweight sword, securing the weapon and its sheathe to their waist. Was it impractical? Not entirely. Firing a gun outside the Perimeter was too noisy and they’d quickly attract unwelcome visitors. A long blade gave them distance and leverage against their opponents. Also it made them feel like they were cool, so they really didn’t care.
Lastly, Piers headed for their window, grabbing their respirator and gloves. The bottom half of the respirator sat snuggly against their face as they first secured the bottom half, then the top half to protect their eyes and cheeks from the freezing wind. In the reflection of the window, they could barely see their reflection, and the tiny pink flowers Grady had painted on their respirator so she could always find them.
Carefully, Piers pushed open their window, before tugging on their gloves and peeking their head outside. The bitter wind blew fiercely and they dug their fingers into the windowsill. Hundreds of feet below, the city puttered on, though not as busy in the Royal District as the others. Disappearing around the right corner of the building, past Old Buckhead surrounding them, was the skyline of Atlanta. Barely visible through the dense city and smog, they could see the southernmost edge of the Perimeter. Then, the wilderness took over.
Slipping back inside, and closing their window, they pulled up a map of Palace Personnel and Visitors. With everyone in the Palace for the next few days, there wasn’t a clear path to the basement, unless they used the Palace’s backrooms and service elevators. Piers headed for the central elevator, planning their route as they watched people move around on the map. David was with Adele. Marcie was with Gavin near Command Central, heading towards the kitchens. Dr. Panya was in the lab, per usual.
They took the elevator from thor floor, the 65th, to the 50th floor, the highest the service elevators reached. Hansel was too buried in his work to notice them darting down the hallway and slipping into the left service elevator they had just called. Piers punched and held the button for B5, making sure the elevator wouldn’t stop.
Unlike the central elevators, the service elevator creaked and groaned the entire way, taking ages to descend to the lowest part of the basement, before the doors finally opened. The darkened hallway let them navigate the maze of floor B5, until they found the open garage door near the Lab. Gravel crunched beneath their feet as they walked out into the dimly lit garage, making their way towards the surface. The Perimeter guards stationed at the entry either didn’t notice them leaving or didn’t care (concerningly).
The Royal District seemed much busier on the ground, as people turned to the streets to party for the evening. Piers slipped through the crowd, watching them swell with more and more people. Their name and likeness was emblazoned on buildings and signs and even plastic cups. Here, people loved Queen Adele, able to ignore the struggles of the other districts in Atlanta. Monarch Piers to them was a symbol of another era of untouched rapid wealth accumulation, free of worry. Little did they know, the little party would soon be coming to an end. One of their first goals was to increase taxation on the wealthier residents, to try and check the growing wealth divide between the rich and the poor, which was exacerbating the issues they were facing. However, they weren’t quite sure how well that would go over with the Royal District.
An open air trolley passed by, and Piers grabbed onto the back, riding it through the crowds. One trolley to the next, they headed towards the old 85-gate. People avoided them like the plague, as respirators were usually a sign of the ones who dealt with the plague.
Although Atlanta was the heart of the initial outbreak of the Incarnareum Repartus fungi, it was a bustling Zone of safety. The infected had been knocking on their doors for almost 180 years, and yet people still flocked from far and wide to live inside the safety of the Perimeter.
As they approached the 85-gate, the guard spotted them, giving them a thumbs up and letting them pass through the small gate, into the Perimeter itself. Years ago, there would have been a line miles long here, waiting to be let into the city. In 2193, an outbreak swept through the camps outside the gate after an influx of refugees from a collapsing Alpharetta District, infecting thousands, and Adele closed the gate permanently after that.
It also meant there were lots of victims still wandering through the woods, haunting until their bodies decayed enough to collapse into a pile of rotting bones and sludge. Or one of the quarantine teams cleared out the infected.
Fun.
Piers was glad they had not turned into sludge.
They passed through the barbed wire fences and concrete barriers, built upon the cracked pavement, and stepped out of the Zone. Trees grew between abandoned buildings, and mutilated bodies of humans and animals alike littered the ground just outside the Perimeter. Eyes and ears open, they began to jog towards Lennox’s home, keeping a lookout for any visitors. They saw nor heard none.
Like most, Piers found themself superstitious of calling the victims of the fungi “zombies” or “the undead”. While it wasn’t far off, it still seemed inhumane. Plus, it was personal to them. Surviving the IR fungi was rare. It required intensive medical care most couldn’t afford, plus the strongest immune system known to man. Piers had had the opportunity to survive, one of maybe a thousand in the entire world, compared to the hundreds of millions who’d been infected, including their older siblings.
A low groan sounded a few yards behind them. It grabbed their attention, and they spun around, unsheathing their sword. The infected wasn’t fast; it’d probably been wandering the woods longer than they’d been alive. They left it alone, resheathing their sword, and picking up the pace as they ran towards the abandoned church which was now just through the trees. With an ear splitting shriek, they opened the heavy metal door, before quickly closing it behind them, throwing the latch. Out of the bitter winter wind, it was much warmer, and they pocketed their gloves
“You’re late. I’ve been waiting.” A young person with long dark hair sat criss-cross at the top of the rotting stairs, reading a book. He seemed unphased and bored, but that was normal for him.
Grinning, Piers tugged off their mask. “Good afternoon to you too, Lennox.”
With a sigh, they closed their book and stretched out their legs, joints snapping like bubble wrap, then pushed themself to their feet. A red hoodie, which he wore over a tshirt and sweatpants, swallowed up his thin frame.
Climbing the stairs, Piers minded the rotting ones they knew would give, and followed them into their living space. It was just as much of a disaster as usual. Random scraps of cloth had been strewn over the floor. A half finished navy ball gown sat draped over a dining chair. His violin balanced precariously on the kitchen counter. Paper targets were still pinned to the walls with knife marks piercing vital points. A life sized nude sculpture took up half the kitchen, tools scattered all over the floor.
“I know, everything’s a complete mess. I’ve been a little restless since I came back.” Lennox put the ball gown on a hanger, then hung it on the railing of the spiral staircase to the loft, “What’s in the bag, I’m hungry.”
“Food, from my friend again.” Piers handed them the backpack, and they opened it, pulling out the plastic takeout containers.
“Bless that woman. I get tired of eating canned food and I can’t cook for shit. That’s always mom’s thing, when she’s around. Or when she brings stuff back. I’ve been craving red beans and rice again, but she said she won’t be able to get that for a while due to ‘issues’, whatever that means…” Lennox rambled, before opening the first takeout container and taking a big sniff, “It’s fucking spicy thank god. I was going to commit murder otherwise.”
Piers laughed, picking up his violin and putting it in the case with the bow, “Who was going to die if it wasn’t spicy?”
“I don’t know.” Lennox picked up a piece of meat, dripping in sauce, with their bare hand and shoved it in their mouth. “Someone would have though.”
Dumping the papers from the table into a crate nearby, Piers cleared a spot for them both to sit at the cramped table. Lennox took a seat, digging into the food with luckily now a fork he’d found somewhere in his messy space. Taking the other food out of the bag, Piers put them in the fridge and pantry, before finally pulling out the books, setting them in front of Lennox. They examined the selection best they could, without touching the books with their saucy hands.
“Some pre-fall literature. Most of it is queer, because I can’t get into anything else.” Piers replied, before taking them over to the dilapidated bookshelf, setting them beside the various other books they’d brought out to him.
“You’re so lucky you get to live in the Palace. The food? The books? The high fashion? It’s all so amazing. I’d die to live near all that. I just couldn’t handle the Queen probably. You know authority isn’t my jam.”
“It’s the monarch now. The queen abdicated a few months ago, and they were just crowned today.” Piers smiled as Lennox wiped their hands on a napkin, before picking up one of the books, scanning over the summary. He either didn’t care or hadn’t seemed to notice who they were, after these years. And they enjoyed that.
“Mhm, long live the monarch or whatever you’re supposed to say.” Lennox sat the fabric down, then looked to Piers, “I never understood you. You hate the monarchy so much, yet you work in their palace, eat their food, and deal with them on the daily. How do you do it?”
“You know what they say.”
“What?”
“Keep your friends close and enemies closer. I’m going to overthrow it all one day, start the government anew.” Piers grabbed an apple from Lennox’s small pile on the table, then hopped up on the counter. “What do you think?”
“Only if I get to enjoy the luxury with you.” A smile flickered on his face, a very rare occasion for such a cheerful person.
“First decree, you’re gonna be my tailor, and make all my clothes.” Piers pointed the apple at them, it shining bright red in the artificial lights.
“Bet.” He snatched the apple, taking a bite, and they complained, before both of them were laughing so hard they couldn’t speak.
“Well, if I did some dealing I could-“
The pop of a shotgun cut through the air, and both of them froze, knowing exactly who wouldn’t be too far behind the noise. Lou
“I gotta go. See you later.” Piers grabbed their bag, swinging it over their shoulder while pulling their mask over their face, “I’ll bring more food next time, but I’m super busy with work, so I don’t know when that’ll be.”
“It’s ok. Be safe.” He waved goodbye as they ran down the stairs, jumping across the gap, before bursting out the door.
The telltale whine of Lou’s bike was getting louder and louder, and Piers, knowing better than to get into an altercation, broke into a dead sprint towards the Perimeter, towards safety.

Our Renovation Scope
Our house is an odd one! Originally a 1890s vintage hunting lodge when Buckhead was hunting ground, it has been through several rounds of renovations.
In the 1920s, the kitchen and two bedrooms were added on to the main hunting lodge. Later, the front historic home was combined with the rear guest home. In 1994, a major update was done to bring things to then-modern standards.
When we bought the house in 2015, there was significant deferred maintenance, with many things untouched since the last 1994 renovation.
The core heart of our renovation — that is, improving the architectural value while staying true to its roots are:
Enhancements to the facade, with new centered doors and windows with a distinctive trim
New entryway and courtyard
Complete kitchen renovation with new appliances
Built-ins in the den, making it more like a library
Total renovation of five of six bathrooms
Hardwood floors throughout the home
New garage doors
The science of our renovation — the nerdy details to make us as efficient as possible — include:
Crawlspace encapsulation
Adding solar panels and a Tesla PowerWall
Reglazing of all original single pane windows
Adding hot water recirculation to front house
Tankless hot water heater for rear house
Slight zone changes and new rigid metal ducting for the front house Daikin VRV Life system
Daikin Fit heat pump replacing rear house's AC and furnace
New dehumidifiers and energy recovery ventilators
New low voltage
We'll be sharing our progress along the way. Stay tuned!

Description: When Caila meets Rooster, sparks fly. But, she's already married, to a man who she thought loved her, and won't let her go. Rooster will fight for her, he just has to convince Caila to fight for herself.
Word Count: 3.2k

When a marriage ends, it's heartbreaking in a lot of ways. Either you're crying over a lost love, crying for the time you wasted, or even crying for the change that comes with a divorce. It's an adjustment, one that people either handle well, or not at all. You could spend years thinking of a way to get that person back, or immediately try to move onto bigger and better things.
I met the man I was going to marry when I was seventeen, at our small town Georgia high school. Buckhead to be exact, the place that my parents settled when my mom stopped touring as much and my father was able to spend more time at home since he moved up in the Navy. It was a normal school day towards the end of our junior year when a boy stopped by my locker. "Hey beautiful." My eyes widened at his voice. Boys never really took an interest in me, at first I thought it was because of who my father was, seeing as the six foot two man who was built like a mack truck was intimidating. Until the fateful day when I had asked out the guy I had been crushing on, and he made it clear I was 'too big' and 'not pretty enough' to even talk to him.
Yeah, that'll kill a girls confidence. So when this boy leaned up by my locker, looking at me with his blue eyes, brown hair and dazzling smile, I was a little confused. "H-hi?" I asked and he chuckled at me. "Why say it like a question? I was talking to you." My face turned red at his comment. "Sorry, um, guys don't usually call me beautiful. It caught me off guard." He chuckled as I closed my locker. "So you're Caila Motley, right?" I nodded and leaned my shoulder onto my locker. "I am, but I don't believe I know you just yet." I said and he flashed me another bright smile. "Aaron. Aaron Wilder. Just moved here after Christmas, and might I say you captured my attention right away." I couldn't help but smile at his words. "Say, are you busy on Friday?" I shook my head quickly, desperately.
"Would you wanna go out with me? To that diner out by Brookhaven?" I nodded. "I live in Brookhaven, so that'll work out great." He nodded and scribbled something on a piece of paper and handed it to me. "Six, okay?" I nodded as he walked away. "See you tomorrow, beautiful. Call me tonight?" My heart swelled and I nodded at his words. This boy flirted with me, called me beautiful, and gave me his number? He's actually interested in me!
I rushed home in my little 2007 BMW 7 Series, rushing in through the garage. I went through the kitchen and rushed upstairs to my room, throwing my bag in the floor and yanking up the landline before stopping myself. Don't seem desperate, give it a few hours. Suddenly my door flew open. "What's the hurry? It sounded like a stampede rushing up those stairs." My mom said picking my backpack up and hanging it up on the back of my bedroom door. "Sorry mama, I just got excited." She raised her eyebrows, "Oh, what for?" I held up the paper. "This boy at school gave me his number." I squealed and she smiled before sitting next to me on my bed. "Is he cute?" I chuckled. "Uh duh! He has the softest looking brown hair and his eyes are this gorgeous light shade of blue." She smiled at me.
"Seems like he's got you all smitten." I smiled. "Honestly, I didn't know who he was until he approached me today. Mama he called me beautiful and everything." She ran her hands through my hair. "Just don't get in too deep too quick sweetie, it's not always a fairy tail ending." Boy, I wouldn't know till years later how right she would be.
Our date went well, especially since I told him who my parents were. You'd think telling a date your father is Admiral David 'Bobcat' Motley would scare him away, or that telling him your mother is famous country singer Regina Motley would be intimidating but no. He accepted it with a smile on his face and that's when I truly thought I found a good one, if my parents or large older brother Jameson didn't scare him off, then surely he'd be perfect. We had two weeks until graduation when I got the call, I knew it would be coming today and I've been crawling out of my skin since then. "Yes sir, thank you for your time sir." I hung up and turned to everybody. "So?" My father asked. "I GOT ACCEPTED INTO THE NAVAL ACADEMY!" Screams erupted everywhere as my father squeezed me into a tight hug. "I have never been more proud of you!" I squeezed his neck at his words. "Oh darlin', I am so proud of you!" My grandmother said, yanking me from my dad into a bone crushing hug. "Thank you Mamaw." I said before noticing Aaron outside on the deck. I hugged everyone else before walking outside. "Hey." I said quietly and he didn't even turn to look at me. "Did you hear?" He huffed and hung his head. "Of course I did." He said as I moved to stand next to him. "You knew this was my plan ever since our first date." I said and he turned to face me, placing a hand on my cheek as I nuzzled into it. "I know. I knew no matter what I said you were gonna join the navy, and you've worked so hard over the last year to prepare for it." It was true, I've lost weight and become so much stronger physically. "I leave out for the boot camp the Monday after graduation, and then I start my plebe summer at the academy." He chuckled at the word. "What am I gonna do without you?" He said leaning in. "You're going to Duke in the fall to study Pre-Law. We'd be separated either way." He smirked at me, tilting my chin up. "Yeah, but at least then I'd get the summer with you." He said kissing me sweetly.
Being separated from Aaron and my family while in the naval academy wasn't easy. I always had them to lean on, and now I was alone. The phone calls and few visits a year was not enough, especially for Aaron and I.
"Tell me who he is Caila!" I groaned throwing myself onto the bed across from Natasha. "There is nobody else Aaron! I told you! I was walking down the hall when one of the guys yelled!" I said as tears started falling down my face. "Bullshit!" I rubbed the space between my brows. "Aaron please-" "No, if you want to cheat on me go ahead! We're done!" The call dropped after that and the sobs hit. "What am I gonna do Nat?" She came over, brushing my hair out of my eyes. "I've never been without him!" I cried harder as she lifted my head and set it in her lap. "Maybe this time apart as a couple will do you some good, Caila. He'd be an idiot to let you go for good." I sniffled, trying to stop my tears. "You mean it?" I felt her chuckle lightly. "Of course I mean it, you are a beautiful, strong woman and if he decides to leave for good, well then good riddance." I sniffled and looked up at her.
"Did you really mean it when you said I was beautiful?" Hearing Natasha say it made me realize, no one other than my family or Aaron had ever told me that. "What is it your mom says? Pretty as a Magnolia in bloom." I nodded and hugged her. "Thank you, Natasha." She hugged me back tightly. "Any time Caila, whenever you need."
Aaron and I of course got back together after that, we got back together many times over my time at the naval academy. Many cheating accusations and fights caused us to break up and get back together, I just thought he couldn't handle the distance, couldn't handle being away from me. But it was the control that he missed, even though I didn't know it at the time. At my graduation I spotted him in the crowd and rushed over as soon as we were released. I saw my dad first, his six foot two frame towering over many people but he was red in the face, looking angry in his own dress whites uniform. I was worried until I saw Aaron in the crowd, on one knee with a ring box in his hand.
My heart hit my stomach at the sight, I was nervous for some reason and looking back now. I should've listened to me gut and said no. "Caila, I have spent the majority of these last four years without you and even though we had our ups and downs we're here baby. I couldn't see you today without asking you this. Caila Amelia Motley, will you marry me?" I froze for a second before nodding and rushing over. "Yes, yes. God yes!" I said as my excitement took over and tears started flowing, I wiped my eyes and stepped back as he slid the ring on my finger. Many of my classmates cheering for me as he did so. I looked at the ring seeing it was a white gold band, with a large emerald cut diamond and many smaller diamonds around it.
"Aaron, how much did you give for this ring?" He just shook his head. "Don't worry about it baby, now come here. I haven't gotten to kiss you yet." He said grabbing me by my chin and pulling me into a searing kiss. I quickly pushed him away, "I'm in uniform, I can't." He rolled his eyes. "We just got engaged, I think the Navy can get over it." He said before grabbing me again, but before he could kiss me again a large hand landed on the shoulder of the five foot nine man before me. "They won't get over it." That's how I found out why my father was angry, Aaron never asked his permission. Something I asked him to do when we first started talking about getting married.
"Let me see!" Natasha said rushing over and I lifted my left hand for her to see. "Holy shit! That is a big ass rock!" I nodded. "It even feels heavy, I certainly couldn't take this with me on deployment, it would probably slide right off." She glanced up at me. "For a girl who just got engaged to the man she says is the love of her life, you don't seem so happy." I shrugged. "I am it's just, this isn't what I was expecting. You know me, I'm not a fan of silver and white gold. I'd rather have a gold band and something smaller, it doesn't have to be flashy. I would've been fine with a twenty dollar gold ring from Walmart with fake diamonds." She stared at me for a moment. "You feel like he doesn't really know you." I shrugged. "We did just spend the majority of four years apart. I think we just have to learn each other again, people can change a lot in that time span. Hell we went from eighteen to twenty-two." She nodded again. "Or maybe he never knew you at all?" I furrowed my brows.
"Come on Caila, look," She motioned over to Aaron who has busy chatting with some guys from our class. "He's more focused on chatting with them than he is his own fiancé." I lowered my head. "It's okay Natasha, he's always been like that. I just have to let him have his time and come to me or-" She crossed her arms over her chest. "Or what?" I fiddled with the ring on my finger. "He gets distant. He says I can be suffocating, so I just give him his space and let him do what he wants." She rolled her eyes. "We may be friends but you don't get to sit here and judge my relationship Nat." She nodded. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't judge. If he makes you happy then I'm happy for you." I nodded. "Thank you." I guess that's when the question started, even through flight school I pondered on it and threw around the same question. Did he really make me happy?
~~~
I thought he did, I really did. Especially when I came home from my first deployment, there he was leaning against my Jeep in Jacksonville. Waiting for me as we docked, This was the one time we could show affection in uniform so I rushed over and hugged him and pulled him into a kiss. "Oh god, I missed you!" I said as he squeezed my waist, kissing me back. "Oh babe, you have no idea how much I've missed you."
"Get a room!" I heard a voice behind me yell, I turned to find Fanboy and Payback smirking at me. "No! I like the view!" I said smiling at Aaron, I heard someone gag as they walked by and rolled my eyes seeing none other than Hangman. "Keep walking Hangman, no one wants your nasty attitude around here." He turned to us, walking backwards. "I can think of many ladies who would." He turned back around and kept walking as Fanboy and Payback walked over. "Fanboy, Payback this is my fiancé Aaron Wilder." I said introducing them and they shook hands. "Ah, the lawyer." He nodded. "Sure am, and you guys are?" He asked pointing between them. "Pilots, like me."
"Yeah well, we gotta go. See you around Magnolia, keep in touch!" They said before walking away. "Magnolia?" Aaron asked and I smiled and pulled my helmet out, showing him the tiffany blue helmet with white stripes, the word Magnolia across the top with two flowers on either side. "It's my call sign. This was my first time working with a squadron so we were assigned our callsigns." He furrowed his brow. "Callsign?" I could've rolled my eyes. "It's basically a nickname, one that's used over the radio and in person. So that way should our comms get intercepted no personal information is going out over the airwaves." He nodded. "Well I'm exhausted and ready to get home. Load up." He said tossing me the keys and walking around to the passenger seat and got in, looking at me like I grew two heads when I didn't move. "Could've at least taken my bag." I grumbled as I got into the drivers side and cranked the jeep.
He slept that entire drive home, snoring like a baby as I drove us through nine hours of traffic to get back to our house in Buckhead. It should've been five hours but Atlanta traffic is my own personal purgatory. As we arrived home I saw my parents car in the driveway and got excited. I got out of the drivers seat as my dad opened the door and greeted me with a bear hug. "Oh, my little girl home from her first deployment. Are you okay? Everything go smoothly?" I nodded. "Had to set my wingman straight once but other than that it was good. Hard and busy but good."
"Now, why were you driving? Is that fiancé of yours too lazy to do it?" Dad said stomping towards the jeep. "Dad he's exhausted." I said and he turned to me. "I don't know how, he went down to Jacksonville two days ago. He had plenty of time to sleep in that nice plush hotel of his." I furrowed my brow, I thought in his email he said he would come down this morning. Nevertheless my dad opened the passenger door and woke him up, I couldn't quite hear what he said but I did hear, 'Man up, and get her bags.'
Needless to say he grumbled the entire time he had my bag, groaning about how heavy it was. "If it's that heavy then why don't you hit the gym with me?" I asked and he groaned. "This again? Babe, like I told you I have no interest in going to the gym with you." I shrugged. "It was just a suggestion." I said and he all but threw my bag on the dining room floor. "What? You think I'm weak or something? Is that why you keep asking me to go to the gym with you? After being around all those Navy guys, you're not proud that I'm your fiancé?" He yelled out, getting in my face. My dad and brother stood from the couch, and I held out my hand to stop them. "Oh yeah, let daddy fight your battles."
"Don't you ever, bring my father into another argument again. It was a simple suggestion and if you want to take offense to it, then be my guest but you know that was not what I meant by that." We stared at each other for a moment before he stormed past me and up the stairs. I leaned against the counter as my mother came over, taking me into her arms and squeezing me. "No one ever said this would be easy sweetie." I nodded. "I know, I just don't know where he gets these ideas." I heard my dad inhale to say something when my mother whipped around. "David. Now is not the time." We both knew what he wanted to say. 'Leave him. Give the ring back. We'll help you kick him out.'
Instead he said something else. "Did you get your call sign?" I smiled at his question, him knowing it would make me feel better. "Sure did." I said going over and pulling out my helmet. "Magnolia?" Mom asked and I nodded. "Just like you and Mamaw always told me, 'Beautiful as a Magnolia in bloom.' I was deployed with a girl I shared a room with back at the academy before Natasha and when I couldn't figure out a call sign then she suggested it and it stuck." Mom kissed my forehead as my dad pulled me closer. "We're so proud of you." Mom said as Jameson took my helmet to look at it. "Should've called you rattlesnake." I punched his arm. "OW! See, meaner than a damn rattlesnake!" I chuckled before hugging him. "So we have a new naval aviator in the family and I hear country music's biggest rising star Mr. Jameson Motley!" I said in my best announcer voice. "Damn right, mom and I are gonna dominate the award shows this year!" I chuckled. "We also released those songs you gave us, they're a hit!" Mom said and my jaw dropped.
"No way!" She nodded. "People and producers love it, I recieved so many offers for you. But of course I turned them down." I chuckled. "Thank you, I'll keep writing as long as no one expects me to record more music because I won't, my career with the navy is my main focus. Music is now a hobby." She nodded before hugging me again. "I'm so glad you're home." I nodded. "Me too, mama." Little did I know that things were never going to get better for Aaron and I.
Part 1: Chapter 5 ( pt. 1 Ace and Jade)
2017: March 19th 2017
Jade: 25
Tumblr media
“You keep me decked out the lastest, taking me to knew places, got me calling me friends like damn he’s the greatest, thought love was overrated, somebody lied im faded, and the way you make me feel you got me elevated, I don’t questions, you come round in that two seater, telling me that you ready to go. i dont ask question, go out telling me you got all this money to bloooow, run it up, run it up” I sang, driving round in my all black Jeep Wrangler. I had been out running errands with my bestfriend Mia, and My friend Myiesha, and I had just got home. Ace and I had moved to buckhead in the cut. Ace didn’t want to live in a neighboorhood. Our house was an all glass house, you could over see the city at night, it was beautiful. I never had to worry about working but I stacked any money Ace gave me, just in case we really needed it. I seen Ace was gone, so I just pulled into the garage. When I walked in the house, I got undressed and got myself situated, to start cooking dinner. I turned on my music as I started to get in the shower to wash my hair, and shit. “Alexa play Pull up by G-Herbo”. I walked into the bathroom. I sighed and seen Ace had been doing coke again. Lately he’s been doing more than smoking weed and dringing lean, he started popping pills, and snorting Cocaine. I quickly trashed the shit. “What the fuck Ace!” I cleaned off the table and throw whatever pills he had in the trash. I got in the shower and began washing up. I jumped at a sound that sounded like glass breaking. “Alexa pause the music” I said. I quietly and quickly got out the shower. I threw on my long sleeve romper, and put on my uggs. My hair was dripping down my back soaking my romper. “I know his bitch is here, I followed her” I heard a voice say. “She probably upstairs” I heard a deeper voice say. Shit like this never really happened but Ace prepared me for anything. I grabbed my book bag that carried Ace and I’s passports, spare property keys, a band, a bullet proof vest which I quickly put on and 3 guns, with extra bullets, and a safe phone. I grabbed the other gun under the bathroom counter, I tied the knife that was in the medicine cabinet to my arm. I heard them checking every room. The only way out was downstairs. I had my car keys downstairs, and I also had a spare key under my car. I quickly turned on my location tracker for Ace. I heard our room door bust open. I was hiding in the closet. My breathing was getting faster. “Check everywhere, shoot on sight” I heard the voice say. I clocked the gun back, and took the safty off. He opened the closet door and with out hesitation. I pulled the trigger, I shot him in the chest and he fell back, shooting back at me as I run off. The other dude, grabbed me by my hair. I grabbed the knife and stabbed his side. He instantly let go. I ran to the stairs,
I tripped down the last steps falling to the ground. “Shit!” I yelled out. The guy who grabbed me was big, he started shooting from upstairs. I ran to kitchen grabbing the tiny remote from the drawer closes to the garage, I opened the garage. “Fuck” I said to myself. I seen, it was another guy. He smirked. “Hey princess”. I backed up and walked into my house. “Damn it!” I yelled. I left the gun on the counter. I ran back in the house and locked the door to the garage. The big nigga was dragging the guy I shot down the stairs. He looked at me and pulled the trigger the bullet hit my arm “Uhhhh!” I felt my eyes water. Jade snap out of it, Jade! I thought to myself. I snatched the gun off the counter. and I ran out the back door, as he was shooting. I ran around the house till I got back to my car in the garage. The other guy was kicking at the garage door. I ducked down and grabbed my spare key off the bottom, I hit the unlock button and got in, he turned around and we made eye contact. I quickly turned my car on and put it in reverse. He pointed the gun at me, and started shooting. I sped backwards down my drive way, and pressed the button. Instantly the house blew up. I drove 5minutes down the road when I started to get light headed from losing blood in my arm. My steering wheel was bloody and I could feel myself going in and out, I tried to pull over but my body was weak. I felt my car hit a tree and I blacked out.
I woke up and heard a beeping noise. I was squinting because of the light in my eyes. I groaned at the headace I had. “What the fuck?” I said touching the stiches on my forehead. “Baby?” I heard. I looked and seen Ace in a chair near me. “Where am I, what happened?” I asked. He smiled at me. “You was dope baby, you got shot in your arm, I followed you on the Find My Friends app you sent me, you had a little crash into a tree, I got you out and brung you here to the underground hospital” He told me. He kissed on my face. “I love you soo much man, Im sorry for putting you in the situation, but you handled it like a G, thats my baby” He said. I softly smiled. “Am I okay?” I asked. A middle age women came into the room. “Hello Jade, I heard so much about you. How are you?” She asked me. I shrugged. “You tell me” I said. She looked between me and Ace. “Um your fine, we pulled the bullet out and sewed your wound back up, we would normally give you percocet but we have to give you something not as strong” She said. I looked at her crazy. “No offense when I say this but bitch this shit hurts” I said. She nodded with her hands in defense. “I can’t give you the pills because your pregnant Jade” She said. My eyes widened. “Huh?”. Ace shook his head. “Nah, she can’t be, Im not ready for no kid man, maybe you got it wrong” He said. She shook her head. “We ran your results Jade, you are pregnant, you need to go to a real doctor to get a second opinion but I read them twice, to make sure you had no infections from the wound” She said. I felt tears fall from my face. I was scared as fuck. I was not ready to be a mom, I didn’t even want kids, Ace and I we never used protection, I wasn’t on the pill, we just assumed I just was never going to get pregnant. Ace went through his pocket and started popping 3 pills of X. He looked at me. “What?” He asked. I shook my head still crying. We aint ready for no kid, Ace is a damn junkie, he put my life in danger. “We can go to the clinic to handle this, when we leave once we go to the doctors to see if this shit is true” He told me. I wiped my tears and turned over in the bed.
A week later:
I had scheduled an appointment with a doctor at the hospital near by. I was anxious and nervous I just wanted to know. “Jade Thomas?” The nurse called for me. I stood up. “You can follow me” She said. I followed her to the back. “You can go in the bathroom and pee in the cup and meet us back in here. Dr. Moss will be in with your results” She said before leaving. I peed in the cup and went back into the office. My leg was shaking, and my hands were sweaty, I was scrolling through IG for about 20minutes. “Okay Jade?, Hi Im Dr. Moss” Dr. Moss said. “Hi” I said. She closed the door and pulled up a chair. “So your lab results came in and you are pregnant, I will use the monitor to see how far long, so you can get undressed, and put on the gown. I will see you shortly” Dr. Moss said before leaving out. I started crying as she closed the door. I got up and got undressed and into the gown. “Okay, You ready? Are you okay?” Dr. Moss said looking at me with concern. I was still in tears. “Im just not ready for this” I told her. She nodded slowly. “Once you see your baby you will feel more ready. Lift your legs up on these step stoops for me. Im going to do a transvaginal ultrasound to see the egg” I nodded as I put my feet up and she put the monitor inside. I heard a intense beating sound. I looked at the doctor. “What is that?” I asked. She smiled. “Your babys heartbeat” She said. “Thats your baby, its like a little bean, but it seems you are 7 weeks pregnant” She said. I started to feel overwhelmed but in a good way. “My baby?” I asked. She smiled and nodded. “Yes, we can schedule you another appointment at 12 weeks okay?. And don’t be worried babys are a gift from above” She told me. I nodded. “Your little bean seems to be due around December. 9th this year” She told me. I smiled. “A winter baby, like me” I told her.
After my appointment, I got in my car, and drove home. After the explosion and my car crashing. Ace moved us to his second home in Austel, He got me another Jeep, all black matte. When I got home, I seen he was already there with other cars. “I can’t even roll in peace, everybody notice me, I can’t even go to sleep. Im rolling on a bean. They tried to me eight, got my knees like “Jesus Please” He don’t even believe in Jesus why he got a Jesus Piece” Kodak Black- “Roll In Peace” blasted from the surround sound speakers. “Ohhh give me that dub bitch!” I heard Ace friend Baby G yell. I walked around the living room and seen Ace friends playing poker at the poker table. Ace was snorting coke on a metal tray near the poker table. I sighed, he was turning into Davis. “Ace!” I yelled. He wiped his nose and smiled at me. “Hey babydoll” He said, he was high as hell. “I been calling you” I told him. “Oh man baby I been with my niggas!” He said pointing his friends. He dug into his pocket and lit a cigerette. “You had a great day with your fine ass in them leggings girl, you going to keep me some ass tonight baby. Ima eat you up” He said grabbing me and whispering in my ear. I lightly pushed him back. “Ace can we talk privately?” I asked. He smirked at me and bit his lip. “Aight pretty face” He sighed kissing on my cheek. I moved my face away and brought him in the kitchen. “I went to the doctor” I told him. He inhaled the cigerette. “Aight so what the say?” He asked. I inhaled my breath, and exhaled. “Im pregnant” I said. He nodded. “No prob, baby will just get that shit taken care of tomorrow” He said shrugging. “Im not getting an abortion Ace” I told him. He lightly laughed. “You trying to be like O and Naomi? Man J stop playing lets just go there tomorrow get rid of the shit and buy more plan b I guess. I aint pulling out and I ain’t putting on a condom fuck that shit. You mine, I like to feel my shit” He said. I palmed my face. “Ace I said Im not killing our baby. I heard his or hers heart today and I realized I created a life, I can be a better mother than my mom or aunt was to me. I can actually have a family, a family with a man I love” I said to him with tears in my eyes smiling. He shook his head. “Do that shit by yourself then J, Im not raising no kid nigga. You aint bout to complicate my life J, shit fuck that man”. My heart dropped. “So you going to leave me to raise our child by myself Ace?” I asked shocked at his reaction. He shrugged. “You know what fuck you Ace, fuck you all this money, all this shit! Fuck you! Im soooo done with you!” I screamed. All his friends looked at us. I ran upstairs to grab my some of my shit. “So you going to leave me?” He asked. “Are you going to step up and be a man, or choose them drugs and bitches over your family?” I asked him. He sucked his teeth and waved me off. “Man we should of just stayed bestfriends, Ima be good nigga, shit bye” He said. “Fuck you Ace, you just like Davis crackhead ass”.
Dirt bike, four wheeling (woo)
Come up in the street I’m peeling (skurr)
Come up in the street I’m peelin” I was rapping to Bankroll Fresh drunk as hell, and high as a kite. “Knock, Knock” I heard the door knock at the door. I grabbed my gun and looked through the peephole. I seen it was La-La she had been coming over lately. “Wassup bitch” I said to her. She rolled her eyes. “I heard you was down so I decided to bring in a friend her name is Diamond” She said. I smirked. “Oh you freaky freaky” I said. She nodded. “Anything for you Ace baby” She said kissing me. One thing lead to the next and I was messing with both girls, I was feeling the high, but shit started go left. I started seeing hallucinations everybody I killed. “Bruhh what the fuck!” I scrambled for my pants. “Ace you good?” La-La asked. I shook my head. My breathing intensified. I grabbed my cars keys and ran out the house. I grabbed my phone, and called X. “Wazzam Ace, you know O aint want us fucking with you”. “X man you got to help me I think Im spazzing off everything, Im seeing dead people” I said. 7 Months Later: December 3rd, 2017
The past seven months, I been good. I went to rehab in L.A. took therapy. Ready to get back to bussiness. Ready to get back to my girl. Ready to be a Dad, an just make up for all the shit I did to J. My therapist told me it was going to be a long road to forgiveness from J. Also she asked me to forgive my mom, forgive my past and be a better version of me. When I dropped down in the Atl, the first thing I did was sale my property. Get me
A new crib, get a decorator to design me a gender nuetral nursery for J. She can add to it or recreate it if she likes. I turned in my Lambo and My Maserati for a Range Rover and an Escalade. I grew my hair out, and got it braided. I been back for a few weeks now, it was time to make my apology rounds. I showed up at Omari’s. “Ace! Hey little brother” Naomi said answering the door. “Uncle Acey!” Rain and Ocean yelled. They was right up underneath Mimi following her around in there little pajamas. “Hey my little niggas” I said. They each gave me a hug. “Yall keep growing man!” I said. “Im a big boy now, I get to go to pre-k” Rain said. Ocean nodded. “Yep me too!” I pretended to be shocked. “What?! No way” I said. “Go get daddy for me” Naomi told them. They ran off. “How are you?, you look good!” She said hugging me. I smiled. “I feel good, I been in L.A went to rehab and therapy” I told her. She nodded. “Hows J?” I asked. She smiled. “Good, she recently moved out, and into X and Heiress place for now, but she is getting her own place out in Alpharetta” She said. “Well I bought us a house, hopefully we can work shit out and be a family” I told Naomi. She kind of looked away. “Um Ace, Ima be honest with you. Jade is not going to just up and go with you. She’s 38 weeks pregnant. She’s been doing this by herself. You can’t up and decide now that you got the help you need that shit is all sweet well its not. You left when she needed you the most, she has no family relatives. That was fucked up, Im happy you got help so now you can be a father to your daughter, and maybe later Jade will forgive if she even lets you see your child” She straight up said. I looked at her. “A daughter?” i asked still tooken back by that reveal. I assumed I was going to have a son for the longest. Naomi nodded. “Ima work hard to get my family man. I just was dealing with alot of demons” I said. She nodded. “I get it Ace, this aint no easy way of living. I had to develop tough skin to even kill a man to protect my family but we do what we got to do to survive” She told me. “Daddy uncle Acey is right there!” The twins yelled in my brothers arms. He put the boys down. “Follow me in our basement” He simply said. I followed him down. “You can sit on the couch” He told me. He sat across from me looking down and then up at me. “You look good man, you look clean and healthy” He said. I smiled. “I got some help, got my shit together” I said. He smiled. “We missed you, I aint gon lie, niggas been ruthless without my number 1. Assasain, the gang been running cray, you know Jade just had her baby shower for her daughter, yall having a little girl” I nodded. “Yeah Mimi told me, Im scared as hell to have a little girl” I said honestly. He shrugged. “The toughest most ruthless ones always have the little girls, it softens them up” He said. “She been going through alot, just been crying most days. She misses you but wont admit cause you said some file shit to her. You got alot of work to do bro” He said. Naomi rushed down the steps. “Um Jade called, her water broke” She said. Omari nodded. I stood frozen. “Show time, lets see if you really about to change” He said. I followed him up. “We will meet yall later, just go to her Ace. Ima send you the address” I rushed out the house and to the hospital.
I rushed into the lobby. “Jade Thomas? Her water um it broke or something” I said breathing heavy. “Are you family? Or the father?” She asked. I nodded. “Yeah shes having my baby” I said proudly. She nodded. “Maternity ward, B25” She said. I quickly went to the elevator. When I got off I looked around for her room. I seen B25. I just busted in. I seen Jade looking very pregnant, and her best friend Mia. “Ace? Ace why are you here! You can go” She said fighting back tears. I shook my head. “Im here J, I um Mia can we talk please” I asked. She rolled her eyes. “Your 39 weeks too late Ace” She snapped. I pulled out a band. “Mia please give me like 10minutes damn!” I yelled. She looked at Jade who looked annoyed wiping her face. She just walked out. “J, baby. I was a fucking dumb ass for abandoning you. I know you needed me and I foolishly needed you. I left to get help. I went to Rehab and shit. Ima new nigga J” I stressed. She nodded. “I just need you to be here for our baby right now Ace. I can’t do us right now. I can’t allow myself to let someone else I love leave me again. That really fucked me up” She cried. I was a hard nigga with her being my soft spot so for me to cry with her, I really felt her pain. “I um, Ima do what I got to do to prove myself” I chocked trying to act cool. A nurse walked in. This sprawling five-bedroom is swinging for nearly $700K in Vine City
Tumblr media
Dormers and a wraparound porch highlight the facade at 258 Sunset Avenue NW. | Keller Williams Realty Atlanta North
It’s a few doors down from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s final house, with rental potential
Atlanta buyers with an appreciation for history and a hankering to make history might find their calling on Vine City’s storied Sunset Avenue.
Three doors down from Dr. Martin Luther King’s final home, a property that remains in the King family, this sprawling five-bedroom residence described as “elegant” is aiming to set the high mark for Vine City home sales by several hundred thousand dollars.
In the area, average home prices land at a little less than $230,000. Only one other house has sold for more than even $300,000 in Vine City—the one that belonged to Dr. King, according to property records.
This week, the home in question listed with Keller Williams Realty Atlanta North for $689,900.
Before falling from your chair, consider that the house, built in 2015, includes more than 5,600 square feet—enough room, as the listing suggests, for a family to live in a portion and rent the other.
“It is nearly impossible to find another intown home that is 5,000+ square feet and less than five-years-old,” the listing accurately asserts. (A couple of new Buckhead palaces excluded).
Tumblr media
The huge porch affords sunrise views over the city and a glimpse of the neighborhood’s newest park coming together.
While the house probably won’t be gracing the pages of Southern Living, the price per square foot breakdown ($123) could seem like a fire sale compared to virtually all new-home product in Atlanta. Four bedrooms and a two-car garage with a workshop come with.
The city’s core is just beyond the trees. Another perk is green space.
From the porch, it’s a one-block walk to the forthcoming Rodney Cook Sr. Park—planned as a rainwater-capturing cousin to Historic Fourth Ward Park—while a block in the other direction is John F. Kennedy Park, which wrapped a $2.4-million overhaul prior to Atlanta’s Super Bowl.
Entering from the porch leads to an open-floorplan kitchen.
“My oldest daughter, Jenna, recently said to me, “My greatest fear as a child was that you and mom would get divorced. Then, when I was twelve, I decided that you fought so much that maybe it would be better if you did.” Then she added with a smile. “I’m glad you guys figured things out.”
For years my wife Keri and I struggled. Looking back, I’m not exactly sure what initially drew us together, but our personalities didn’t quite match up. And the longer we were married the more extreme the differences seemed. Encountering “fame and fortune” didn’t make our marriage any easier. In fact, it exacerbated our problems. The tension between us got so bad that going out on book tour became a relief, though it seems we always paid for it on re-entry. Our fighting became so constant that it was difficult to even imagine a peaceful relationship. We became perpetually defensive, building emotional fortresses around our hearts. We were on the edge of divorce and more than once we discussed it.
I was on book tour when things came to a head. We had just had another big fight on the phone and Keri had hung up on me. I was alone and lonely, frustrated and angry. I had reached my limit. That’s when I turned to God. Or turned on God. I don’t know if you could call it prayer–maybe shouting at God isn’t prayer, maybe it is–but whatever I was engaged in I’ll never forget it. I was standing in the shower of the Buckhead, Atlanta Ritz-Carlton yelling at God that marriage was wrong and I couldn’t do it anymore. As much as I hated the idea of divorce, the pain of being together was just too much. I was also confused. I couldn’t figure out why marriage with Keri was so hard. Deep down I knew that Keri was a good person. And I was a good person. So why couldn’t we get along? Why had I married someone so different than me? Why wouldn’t shechange?
Finally, hoarse and broken, I sat down in the shower and began to cry. In the depths of my despair powerful inspiration came to me. You can’t change her, Rick. You can only change yourself. At that moment I began to pray. If I can’t change her, God, then change me. I prayed late into the night. I prayed the next day on the flight home. I prayed as I walked in the door to a cold wife who barely even acknowledged me. That night, as we lay in our bed, inches from each other yet miles apart, the inspiration came. I knew what I had to do.
The next morning I rolled over in bed next to Keri and asked, “How can I make your day better?”
Keri looked at me angrily. “What?”
“How can I make your day better?”
“You can’t,” she said. “Why are you asking that?”
“Because I mean it,” I said. “I just want to know what I can do to make your day better.”
She looked at me cynically. “You want to do something? Go clean the kitchen.”
She likely expected me to get mad. Instead I just nodded. “Okay.” I got up and cleaned the kitchen.
The next day I asked the same thing. “What can I do to make your day better?”
Her eyes narrowed. “Clean the garage.”
I took a deep breath. I already had a busy day and I knew she had made the request in spite. I was tempted to blow up at her. Instead I said, “Okay.” I got up and for the next two hours cleaned the garage. Keri wasn’t sure what to think.
The next morning came. “What can I do to make your day better?”
“Nothing!” she said. “You can’t do anything. Please stop saying that.”
“I’m sorry,” I said. “But I can’t. I made a commitment to myself. What can I do to make your day better?”
“Why are you doing this?”
“Because I care about you,” I said. “And our marriage.”
The next morning I asked again. And the next. And the next. Then, during the second week, a miracle occurred. As I asked the question Keri’s eyes welled up with tears. Then she broke down crying. When she could speak she said, “Please stop asking me that. You’re not the problem. I am. I’m hard to live with. I don’t know why you stay with me.”
I gently lifted her chin until she was looking in my eyes. “It’s because I love you,” I said. “What can I do to make your day better?”
“I should be asking you that.”
“You should,” I said. “But not now. Right now, I need to be the change. You need to know how much you mean to me.”
She put her head against my chest. “I’m sorry I’ve been so mean.”
“I love you,” I said.
“I love you,” she replied.
“What can I do to make your day better?”
She looked at me sweetly. “Can we maybe just spend some time together?”
I smiled. “I’d like that.”
I continued asking for more than a month. And things did change. The fighting stopped. Then Keri began asking, “What do you need from me? How can I be a better wife?”
The walls between us fell. We began having meaningful discussions on what we wanted from life and how we could make each other happier. No, we didn’t solve all our problems. I can’t even say that we never fought again. But the nature of our fights changed. Not only were they becoming more and more rare, they lacked the energy they’d once had. We’d deprived them of oxygen. We just didn’t have it in us to hurt each other anymore.
Keri and I have now been married for more than thirty years. I not only love my wife, I like her. I like being with her. I crave her. I need her. Many of our differences have become strengths and the others don’t really matter. We’ve learned how to take care of each other and, more importantly, we’ve gained the desire to do so.
Marriage is hard. But so is parenthood and keeping fit and writing books and everything else important and worthwhile in my life. To have a partner in life is a remarkable gift. I’ve also learned that the institution of marriage can help heal us of our most unlovable parts. And we all have unlovable parts.
Through time I’ve learned that our experience was an illustration of a much larger lesson about marriage. The question everyone in a committed relationship should ask their significant other is, “What can I do to make your life better?” That is love. Romance novels (and I’ve written a few) are all about desire and happily-ever-after, but happily-ever-after doesn’t come from desire–at least not the kind portrayed in most pulp romances. Real love is not to desire a person, but to truly desire their happiness–sometimes, even, at the expense of our own happiness. Real love is not to make another person a carbon copy of one’s self. It is to expand our own capabilities of tolerance and caring, to actively seek another’s well being. All else is simply a charade of self-interest.
I’m not saying that what happened to Keri and me will work for everyone. I’m not even claiming that all marriages should be saved. But for me, I am incredibly grateful for the inspiration that came to me that day so long ago. I’m grateful that my family is still intact and that I still have my wife, my best friend, in bed next to me when I wake in the morning. And I’m grateful that even now, decades later, every now and then, one of us will still roll over and say, “What can I do to make your day better.” Being on either side of that question is something worth waking up for.”
