Song Review: Steve Cropper & the Midnight Hour feat. Brian May - “Too Much Stress”
“Too Much Stress” has a lot of cooks. But it doesn’t really cook.
The lead single from Steve Cropper’s forthcoming (Aug. 23) Friendlytown finds the M.G. supported by the Midnight Hour with Billy F. Gibbons and features Brian May on guitar and vocals. But it’s an uptempo mish-mash of guitar solos, Queenly backgrounds and silly lyrics delivered by May:
I’m behind, I must confess/my apologies/too much stress/too much stress/just to keep my head straight/takes all my power/life is coming at me/like, 100 miles per hour, he sings.
Full of talent though it may be, “Too Much Stress” is an empty vessel of a track.
Grade card: Steve Cropper & the Midnight Hour feat. Brian May - “Too Much Stress” - C-

Slash - Orgy Of The Damned
Hey, Slash dropped a new album this past Friday, entitled Orgy Of The Damned, and it’s a (checks notes) blues covers album? Okay, color me curious, especially since I’m a fan of his work, but let’s see what kind of vocalists he’s recruited — Brian Johnson, Gary Clark Jr., Demi Lovato, Dorothy, Chris Stapleton, and a handful more. Now that’s even more interesting, as I like a lot of the vocalists here, and I’d love to hear these artists tackle a blues song. The only trepidation I had with the album before listening to it was how long it was, because 70 minutes is a bit daunting for an album, regardless of its style.
I will say, that after spending the last week with this album, my curiosity paid off, because this record is pretty cool. It’s not perfect, but it’s not necessarily the album’s fault, or anyone attached to it. I still enjoy it a lot, though, and blues / rock fans are sure to have a blast listening to this thing. I absolutely love that this is a blues covers album, so every song is from a classic blues artist with a couple of exceptions, including a Stevie Wonder song, and a Norman Whitfield song made famous by The Temptations in the late 60s, but those songs are given the blues treatment.
Every song on here is done with the utmost care and effort, regardless of the vocalist attached, and there’s not a bad cover here, although I will say that some of the covers are better than others, but that’s kind of due to the vocalist just not being one of my favorites. With that said, the songs usually work to the vocalist’s strengths. Chris Stapleton’s cover of “Oh Well” is a blues and southern-rock banger, whereas Brian Johnson’s “Killing Floor” is a hard-rock song with blues touches, so an AC/DC song, basically. A lot of songs here are what you’d expect, especially since everyone here has some blues cred, but that leads me to its biggest issue — some of this album, while Slash’s guitarwork is great, is pretty run of the mill, and the vocalists don’t stick out as much.
Dorothy’s cover of “Keys To The Highway” is good, but a rather forgettable slice of blues-rock, just as the covers with Chris Robinson (of The Black Crowes), Iggy Pop, and Billy F Gibbons. A few covers really stick out, like Chris Stapleton’s, Paul Rodgers’ cover of “Born Under A Bad Sign,” or what is both the most surprising and my favorite cover, Demi Lovato’s cover of “Papa Was A Rolling Stone.” It’s a fantastic cover and her vocals are wonderful on it. The rest of the album is good, albeit what you’d expect for a blues covers album. A couple songs could have been cut, but nothing is bad here. The album ends with a cool instrumental track from Slash, showing off his musical chops without any accompaniment.
Honestly, I really enjoy this record, despite it being a little too long, and the album having some peaks and valleys, but it’s a really fun, loose, energetic, and catchy album with some great performances from both the featured vocalists and Slash himself. This is Slash’s album, so he’s the main star, and he rules here. He matches his playing to the song and vocalist, but his playing is great throughout nonetheless. Slash fans should check this out, and fans of blues and rock should check this out, too, but only a handful of songs are really memorable. I’m not sure if this will be one of my favorite albums of the year, but even so, it’s a good time.

Play for Today: Clay, Smeddum and Greenden (BBC, 1976)
"What ails you?"
"Ails her? You would greet yourself if you saw your life ruined."
"Well, I'm right sorry you're taking it like that. But, losh, it's a small thing to greet over."
#play for today#clay smeddum and greenden#single play#classic tv#bbc#1976#lewis grassic gibbon#bill craig#moira armstrong#victor carin#anne kristen#gerda stevenson#fulton mackay#bill fraser#joan fitzpatrick#eileen mccallum#maev alexander#fiona knowles#brian cox#claire nielson#isobel gardner#a trilogy of connected plays based on the short stories of celebrated Scots writer Gibbon; this got a repeat on bbc4 a few months back and#im using a brief visit home to catch up on stuff I'd recorded off the tv. i think this is on iplayer for the rest of the year and it's well#worth looking out (tho I'd recommend subtitles; the heavy accents and scots dialogue can be difficult to parse). an atypical example of a#PfT‚ but an excellent example of the series' occasional forays into more regional work. Clay‚ the first (and perhaps best) of the three#short plays concerns a man's obsession with the land he works‚ to the detriment of his family and his health. shot with an almost folk#horror sensibility‚ it's a subtle beast; quite unlike the second‚ a broad comic piece about a tough matriarch and her various children. the#third has a more overt sense of the supernatural again‚ or at least a kind of psychological horror (very much subtextual) in its study of a#sensitive urban woman driven slowly out of her wits by dual isolations of a new home in the country and a cruelly distant husband#all three plays benefit from centering strong female characters‚ all three rewarded by excellent casting. as i said‚ watch if you can

I think the wildest part about the Porter isn't that he's evil. As you've said, Brennan's been hinting at Porter being evil this season for a while now, so while it's still shocking, it's not surprising, if you get what I'm saying.
No, it's the fact that this has always been the plan and not something that was reconned in this season. Like, we all thought this was just Brennan taking the bit to its logical conclusion, but no, this has been a reveal five years in the making...
And Emily figured it out Day fucking One by sheer accident!
Yeah for me the thing that floored me wasn't the reveal because that's been on the table for a while now. It was when Brennan said he'd been holding on to it for five years.
Because I even an amazing DM like Brennan can't plan EVERYTHING in advance. Like, the Night Yorb was obviously an addition purely based on the fact that Murph anagrammed Garthy of Brian looking for clues. And I can't imagine Gilear was ever meant to be anything other than a 4 HP divorcee. The Night Yorb fight and Gilear's curse are both pretty clear instances of Brennan running with a bit and working it into the story. But he said he's been sitting on this for FIVE YEARS. Since Freshman year!
I would even be less shocked if he said since Sophmore Year because there is that weird conversation with him, Jace, and Arianwen that finally came up this ep that was never resolved. But since Freshman year? That's nuts!
Second Edit: I am untethered to the passage of time and did my math to figure out when 5 years ago was incorrectly lol. Still impressed Brennan sat on this for so long but 5 years means since Soph Year not Freshman Year. See the replies for me realizing I did my math wrong last night.
If he's not exaggerating then, imo, it's pretty incredible to have this much lore in the back pocket with regard to NPCs that aren't even necessarily factoring into your main story that much. I wonder if this is akin to Mr. Gibbons (dude Aguefort killed to rez Gorgug in ep 2) just being evil and it never being explored but Brennan having had it in his notes. Does he just have a list of 3-5 other evil plots simultaneously happening in the background ready to be stumbled onto or just the general vibes of which teachers are shady?
And, as a sometimes DM, the last time I ran a full length campaign, literally before the game even started--like during Session Zero--I had my BBEG guessed offhandedly by a player just based on her name which wasn't any different from the other names I listed as part of background info and I just went through all the stages of grief internally and then pressed on without changing anything because of Story Integrity. Anyway my point is that it happens and as a DM it is WILD when it does.
Anyway, I am SO excited for the AP tomorrow. Brennan, you better not hold anything back I am SO curious about your DM machinations!
(Edit: Equally excited for Emily's reaction. Adaine is the diviner of the party and, evidently, Emily is the diviner of the table. WILD.)
