F.A.Q. The End Of The World As We Know It: Tales From Stephen King’s The Stand
What follows are the Frequently Asked Questions for THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT: TALES OF STEPHEN KING’S THE STAND — a forthcoming anthology edited by myself and Christopher Golden. Please bookmark this page and check back from time to time, as I will update things as they develop.
Q: What is this, exactly?
A: An original short story anthology based on master storyteller Stephen King’s #1 New York Times bestselling classic The Stand!
Since its initial publication in 1978, The Stand has been considered Stephen King’s seminal masterpiece of apocalyptic fiction, with millions of copies sold and adapted twice for television. Although there are other extraordinary works exploring the unraveling of human society, none have been as influential as this iconic novel—generations of writers have been impacted by its dark yet ultimately hopeful vision of the end and new beginning of civilization, and its stunning array of characters.
Now for the first time, Stephen King has fully authorized a return to the harrowing world of The Stand through this original short story anthology as presented by award-winning authors and editors Christopher Golden and Brian Keene. Bringing together some of today’s greatest and most visionary writers, The End of the World As We Know It features unforgettable, all-new stories set during and after (and some perhaps long after) the events of The Stand—brilliant, terrifying, and painfully human tales that will resonate with readers everywhere as an essential companion to the classic, bestselling novel.
Q: Who is in the book?
A: Featuring an introduction by Stephen King, a foreword by Christopher Golden, and an afterword by Brian Keene. Contributors include Wayne Brady and Maurice Broaddus, Poppy Z. Brite, Somer Canon, C. Robert Cargill, Nat Cassidy, V. Castro, Richard Chizmar, S. A. Q: Who is the publisher?
A: Gallery Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, are publishing the hardcover, paperback, eBook, and audiobook editions in North America. Various foriegn language editions will be published by various foreign publishers.
Q: So there will be hardcover, paperback, eBook, and audiobook editions?
A: Yes. The hardcover and the eBook are already up for preorder via Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and all other booksellers. (Note: as of 10/16/24 Amazon’s hardcover link does not yet work, so check back often or use a different bookseller). You can also preorder from Overlook Connection and get a limited edition dust jacket by Glenn Chadbourne, as well as other cool collectibles.
Q: What’s the cost?
A: The hardcover is listed at $35. The eBook is listed at $16.99. The hardcover that comes with the extra dust jacket from Overlook is $69.95.
Q: Will there be a signed limited edition or a special collector’s edition of some kind?
A: Probably, but it is too early to say for sure.
Q: You listed the contributors above. Anything more you can tell us about the actual stories?
A: Sure. The book is split into four parts. Part One takes place during the initial spread of Captain Trips and the dreams. Part Two takes place between the migrations to Boulder and Las Vegas and the Hand of God moment. Part Three takes place after the conclusion of the novel, detailing the world in the decades that follow. And Part Four takes place… well, that would involve major spoilers.

Hi! You seem so nice and super sweet. I have some questions to know you! You remind me of a big sister, oh my god something about you is so comforting. :) Anyways, I live in California but I've only lived here for around 7 months. You mentioned before you love coming here, but can I have some places that would be nice to go on vacation? I feel super cooped up in my apartment and want to have a fun time outdoors or something. Thank you! <3
That's seriously so sweet and made me tear up a little bit! Thank you ❤️
We've spent a lot of time in a few different spots in CA, so hopefully, I mention one location near you! The obvious to all of this is beach and book. We are two beach bums when we can be, but I'll hit a few of the cities we've stayed at!
Oceanside is our go to. We like the location, due to military relations so its kind of the perfect spot for us because ✨️family✨️ If you are near that area, the beach at night is so quiet and perfect if you love seashell hunting. Oceanside also has street food/fair events, several cute metaphysical shops, and a few really good restaurants. One of them is a rooftop/desktop outdoor situation, it overlooks the docking area there, and at sunset is stunning.
In the San Diego area, I love going to Balboa Park. There's several gardens that are cheap or free to go to. During November to December, one of them is filled with gorgeous variations of poinsettias. There's also a ton of museums there, cultural houses to peep at, and gorgeous architecture. There's also a shopping area that's cute for giggles to just walk around. It's called Seaport Village. They used to have a shop just FILLED with coffee mugs. I loved it 😅
Heading north a little bit to LA where my partner is from. He grew up near skid row and has pretty vivid nightmares still about his kidhood there, so we tend to avoid the downtown area. When we do go, he always takes me to The Last Bookstore (some of you may recognize the name, it is the one you're thinking), it is just an experience. They sell antique books, collector's editions, and rare first editions along with new books. They have MAGICAL displays made from books. Griffith Park is also very beautiful with lots of things to go to. I'm a fan of anywhere with a botanic and butterfly garden 😅 and that brings me to our favorite spot in LA (minus the beach and hiking in Griffith Park) The Huntington Library. It's a library, botanic garden, and art museum all in one. It is 100% for me and not for him. He loves me dearly, and I am spoiled. There's obviously a lot of other things to do in LA (Disney, Orlando studios, ect), but we've been waiting to explore and experience those things until we had Littles to enjoy them with.
Popping between LA and San Fran is Sequoia National Park. If you are going to go and have never been, plan for a few days. It's... almost like breathtaking how small you realize you really are there.
San Francisco is kind of just... I wish I could describe it as something other than home feeling, considering I'm a midwest farm girl, but it has this magical home calling. We have a main thing we really like to do, and it's a little pricy (but not as pricy as the next location ive been treated to). He loves to see Alcatraz. 😅 he's obsessed. Otherwise it is a LOT of hiking and just trying new food places there. I just really love the vibes there for some reason.
Napa Valley I consider its own place, and it holds the most special place in my heart. He took me there for my 25th birthday. It is pricy, but wine country is so just relaxing. We stayed at this hotel, and we literally just walked out of our rooms patio door and into the vineyard. Im not 100% sure how much our week there was, but he told me not to expect anything for Christmas or valentines that year 😅
If you want really hot and in land Cali, my brothers and baby daddy went to Death Valley for a few days. They started the trip there, then went to Vegas (youngest brother's 21st birthday). My older brother said it was unbelievably hot (literally duh my sweet summer child), but he said the 4 days the 3 of them were there was a lot of fun. They did a lot of trail hiking and drank a lot of water. They all do not regret the choice to check it out. I was not invited on the boys' trip, so I didn't get to go 😑 I'm not salty AT ALL I didn't plan the trip for them or anything 🤣
If you're looking to get out of California, Colorado. Find your soul in Colorado. I highly recommend Georgetown. Not too far from Denver, not so high up in the mountains you have to anxious about snowfall and getting trapped, and I'll just attach the view from the hike into the mountains we went on.
I will push Colorado to anyone needing to get away and get into nature if it is in their budget ❤️ I've never found a town in Colorado I didn't think was stunning.
If you want to stay on the West Coast, Oregon. We went to Crater Lake National Park. One word, Ethereal. A little busy, but so so worth it.
No matter where you go, if you're getting into nature and needing to re-center your soul, find a creek with running water and just put your hands or feet in it, or get into the ocean (to where you're comfortable) and just let yourself have a moment of silence. Water is purifying and healing. It's one of the most powerful elements in our world, and it is where I find the strongest connection to Mother Nature ❤️
Let me know if you want more travel spots!

Portland's Pinball Wars
Until recent decades, Portland was known as a hotbed of vice. Even the 1948 election of Mayor Dorothy "No Sin" Lee, a zealous reformer, did little to dent the city's long-established illegal businesses. The problem was that many local officials, especially within law enforcement, were all too willing to accept hush money from the Rose City's underworld.
Gambling was big business back then, and at the time, pinball machines were considered gambling devices on par with slot machines. The bars and clubs used them as games of chance in the same way a modern-day football pool might be operated: Participants would wager on whether a player could achieve a specific goal, such as winning free games or lighting up certain combinations on the backglass. Some pinball machines could be mechanized for record keeping and making the odds of a payoff adjustable.
A notable rivalry between two racketeers over pinball machines. Their story was reinvigorated in 2001 by Portland Tribune columnist Phil Stanford. He later compiled several articles detailing their "pinball wars" in his book Portland Confidential.
Jim Elkins and Stan Terry had both been bootleggers during Prohibition and both had moved on to coin machines, disturbing their slot and pinball machines to various clubs in the area. Between them, they dominated the local market, Elkins in Portland and Terry elsewhere throughout Multnomah County. "Pinball King" Terry had the edge in the 1940s, and Elkins was determined to dethrone Terry by just about any means.
At various times, Elkins hired thugs visited gambling dens to vandalize, burglarize, or outright steal Terry's machines. Terry didn't seem fazed. Business was good, and not even these setbacks prevented him from expending his operation.
By 1954, Elkins was exasperated with Terry's resilience. He met in Seattle with a few criminal confederates and cooked up a more refined solution. They organized a pinball owners association, the Coin Machine Men of Oregon, affiliated with the Teamsters union. This was a calculated move designed to deny Terry membership, thus putting him at odds with the Teamsters.
In early 1955, the Teamsters picketed the Mt. Hood Café's-a Portland eatery-for hosting Terry's now "nonunion" pinball machines. The café's Teamster owner, is an uncomfortable position with his own union, faced dire financial consequences. Terry and Hy Goldbaum, a Las Vegas "bill collector" of some renowned, reached a financial settlement with the Teamster boss and the picket was quickly called off.
A few months later, possibly under duress from the Teamsters, Elkins sold Terry his share of Portland's pinball racket. Shortly thereafter, Herman "Bugsy" Burns, late of the Washington State Penitentiary, paid Elkins a visit. Bugsy had worked for him on and off, mostly delivering heroin between Portland and Seattle. Now, per Elkins request, Bugsy brought along two friends from the hoosegow. Posing as a deliverymen, the thugs schemed to steal all of Terry's machines: They would collect all Terry's "outdated" machines, ostensibly for newer models that would arrive later in the day. But before they could even pull off the job, Bugsy and his pals were arrested as they attempted to rob a supermarket.
In 1956, defeated and disliked, Elkins began ratting out Portland's organized-crime figures, including city officials and Teamsters. He provided enough material for a series of articles in the Oregonian, which resulted in Elkins, Terry, and others being subpoenaed to testify before the Senate Labor Rackets Committee. On the federal committee was an up-and-coming senator from Massachusetts named John F. Kennedy. His brother Robert was the committee's chief counsel.
Faced with ever-increasing scrutiny, Portland began cleaning up its reputation. Police suddenly started enforcing the city's pinball ban, technically in effect with Dorothy Lee's mayoral term. Terry briefly petitioned to overturn the ban, but the Supreme Court upheld it. Terry phased out his pinball empire and, like Elkins focused on other illicit enterprises.
By the 1970s, Pinball had mostly overcome its seedy reputation, and by the 1980s, the new kids in town-video games-almost completely overshadowed pinball. Before too long, rumors began spreading about one video game in particular-a rare and sinister coin-op that purportedly ruined more lives around Portland than pinball ever did . . .
From Pinball King to Patriotic Shepherd
In 1967, years after his reign as Multnomah County's Pinball King, Stan Terry fell off a ladder and fractured his skull. After recovering, some who knew him swore that it affected his personality, making him more of a character than he already was. Now, with an appetite for politics, he ran-unsuccessfully-for mayor of Portland, among other city, county, and state offices. Terry was disqualified as a mayoral candidate because he was not a Portland resident.
A few locals still relate other Stan Terry stunts, such as this one: After getting into a land-use dispute with the city of Lake Oswego, Terry bought a flock of sheep, dyed them red, white, and blue; and let them graze on his property. Soon, the unmistakable odor of sheep manure permeated downtown Lake Oswego. When the city and neighbors complained, Terry sportively explained that he was only expressing his patriotism. Eventually, he and the city came to an agreement and the sheep-colors, smell, and all-were removed.

But we do it because we love it – we love providing epic and free content. We’re a big site with a big team and this job isn’t always easy. With this list, we’ve tried to show you some of the variety you’ll enjoy in this city, and hopefully inspired you to book your trip! Whatever you enjoy doing, there are great places to visit in Las Vegas that will suit your tastes and leave you with bright, colorful, and happy memories. But you can also fill in your time with interesting activities, shows, and sights that have nothing to do with alcohol if that’s more to your tastes. If you want great nightlife and lots of parties, you’ll definitely find that. You can make your stay in Las Vegas everything you want it to be. And then, just have fun exploring the red hills! #24 – Paris Hotel and the Eiffel Tower – Great place to visit in Las Vegas for couples!įinal Thoughts on the Coolest Places to Visit in Las Vegas Make sure you get a map of the area so you can find your way around and take plenty of water in a backpack because it can be baking hot depending on what season it is. Plan your hike ahead of time, particularly if you’re not a strong hiker as some of the trails are quite strenuous. There are lots of biking and hiking trails through the desert. What to do there: You can take the scenic route by car through the area if you don’t feel like doing anything too strenuous, but the park is best seen more slowly. And the surrounding Mojave Desert and its signature red hills are just as spectacular as they look in photos. Located only 17 miles southwest of the city, this conservation area offers a 13 mile car route through the desert as well as numerous hiking and biking trails. That’s why taking day trips out of that artificial world is so important. Why it’s so awesome: When you’re in Vegas, it can feel as if the whole world is bright lights and flashing machines. #23 – Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area – A must visit place to visit in Las Vegas on the weekend! This is one of the most upscale casinos in the Strip, so everything from drinks to cover charges is correspondingly higher than normal. Whatever you decide to do, just know that your visit won’t be cheap. Some of Las Vegas’ best nightclubs are also located on-site including Omnia, formerly known as Pure. There are more than 160 specialty stores in the Forum if you want to drop some serious money as well as a Fall of Atlantis animatronic show and aquarium. What to do there: You absolutely need to do a bit of gambling in the Roman-inspired casino, but there’s a lot more to do at this location. The attached Forum is also one of the best shopping attractions in Las Vegas. You’ve probably seen it in movies and there’s nothing quite like gambling in a room that looks like it could have been built in Roman times, with columns and frescos staring down at you. Why it’s so awesome: Sometimes, you just want to experience a classic location and Caesars Palace is the equivalent of Las Vegas royalty when it comes to casinos. #12 – The Mirage Casino – One of the nicer places in Las Vegas to sightsee! It contains a golden sarcophagus, where Hammergren intends to be buried once he passes. You’ll see a T-rex replica, animatronic tiger, and an Egyptian burial chamber in the basement. And once you make it there, just explore. Nevada day is in October, though the dates vary every year. What to do there: When you book your trip, check to see if they coincide with Nevada day, and definitely show up to see the display if you can. So, if you travel to Las Vegas at the right time of year, it’s worth showing up with the thousands of others who line up to explore his collection. He has an ever-growing collection of memorabilia ranging from an underground mind to a mini Taj Mahal and everything in between. On Nevada Day every year, he opens his home to visitors so they can explore everything he’s collected over the year. Why it’s so awesome: Lonnie Hammargren was a powerful man in Las Vegas and he was also a dedicated collector.

When you come to sell comic books, it pays to be armed with this knowledge! These tend to be the #1 of a series, the first appearance of a famous character or villain, the death of a character, the "origin" of somebody (how they got their super powers, how Batman's parents were killed and inspired him to fight crime, etc.). Still, "key" (important) comics are always worth money. Read our article on comic grading to understand just how finicky comic book collectors are about condition, and see sample photos of what each grade looks like. Sorry to say, most people's idea of what a mint comic looks like is simply not accurate. Really, a very difficult question to answer without seeing it in person, but condition is everything in comics.Ī "little crease in the corner" is a big deal.

For @racketghost 's 13 days of Halloween, prompt "graveyard"
7:00
Agreed to take ‘graveyard shift’ at bookshop for the angel. Angel worried about unscrupulous collectors getting their covetous hands on his first quartos during his trip to Edinburgh. Probably third most adorable worry this year. Fourth, counting the badgers.
Promised to pull wriggling-maggots gambit on any would-be thieves, did not promise to refrain from eating leftover palmiers. Angel oddly concerned about ‘what the shop might get up to.’ Assured him working at night is nothing new, have a saying in Hell that ‘it’s always the graveyard shift somewhere.’ (Was inspiration for the signs about five o’clock, for which received award for Special Contributions in Intemperance.)
Angel left. Briefly brushed shoulders as he was putting on coat, i.e. life still unendurable disaster.
7:33
Should be preparing conference paper for annual Hell all-hands in Las Vegas, can’t be bothered. Intend to waste entire night watching tv humans make complicated desserts and posting misattributed Victorian quotations. Not going to ransack Aziraphale’s kitchen, doze off, or go looking in obscure cabinets.
8:15
Woke up as snake coiled around till amid palmier crumbs. Not good, not supposed to be sleeping. Weird dream in which dressed in white, waiting for a dog, angel had curly moustache. Moustache should not have been attractive, was. Bugger it all to Heaven.
Made tea in the angel’s atrocious kitchen, caused eviction of mouse family when retrieving kettle, probably instigated fall of mouse civilization. Kettle one of those disgusting 1950s flower-patterned nightmares, of course.
Checked email, heaps of bids for own illegal listings on eBay. Should be able to fulfill lust quota for month with posts selling purported toenails of celebrities. Played d*vil’s adv*cate on Twitter (not allowed to actually write that down or Office of Infernal Counsel will send a c&d for making overstated legal claims), started rumor that cauliflower is actually dehydrated human brains.
Heard shuffling sound. Should probably go check for quarto thieves.
8:30
Could not find source of shuffles anywhere. Looked in back room, nothing unusual. All ten zillion throw pillows angel insists on burdening sofa with appear to be in place.
Have had too many thoughts about that sofa. Picked up nearest bottle and went to kitchen to drown idiocy in several teacups of whiskey.
9:00
Got bored, started poking around. Found mildew stain that appears to be accurate map of Antarctica. Considered eating preserves noticed in back of cabinet, but unable to verify that it was made subsequent to Charlemagne’s accession. Briefly entertained notion of reading a book, came to senses and scrolled through 15 articles on phone about dogs that look like famous dictators.
Continued papery-sounding noises in the background. Would not be shocked if angel has white noise machine designed to sound like someone rifling through dictionary pages.
10:00
Got bored-er. Attempted to clean grime from windows experimentally and lost nerve about ten seconds in.
Peeked into bathroom on second floor (which have been unconditionally invited to use but have only entered once to vomit in after regrettable work event in fourth circle). Angel apparently hoarding soap from past three centuries, in least surprising development of modern age.
Washed hands to get rid of window gunk. Refrained heroically from sniffing any towels.
Heard whispering from downstairs. Neighbors? Cannot believe anyone is actually waiting around to steal first quartos from world’s unfriendliest-looking bookstore.
10:12
Finished whiskey. “Cauliflower Is Brains” trending on Twitter. Found own decades-old tie deep in sofa cushions, not that was examining these too closely.
10:50
In attempt to trace whispers, entered stacks. Began imagining scenarios in which unexpectedly holy book toppled and caused catastrophic injury. Do not want angel to return to smoldering pile of ex-demon on his unspeakably dusty floors. Also do not want to be smoldering pile of ex-demon, naturally.
Obtained gloves the angel uses for book repair from end table. Also took umbrella from its place hanging on hatstand and partially opened as defense against falling books. Probably looked like Edwardian wanker.
Proceeded with stack-examining. Organization system unclear. Slightly alarmed by discovering volume of Galen with recent takeaway receipts seemingly serving as bookmarks for easy reference. May explain why angel still refers to all colds as ‘excesses of phlegm.’
Too difficult to navigate narrow shelves with umbrella. Abandoned umbrella, substituted trilby hat for protection from falling sacred texts. Have never looked more ridiculous, very much including all of 17th Century and that time had snakebite piercings and mullet with short fringe.
11:21
FUCKASPIDERCRAWLEDONMYHANDFUCK
11:24
Can never go back to Hell, spider might be waiting there.
11:30
Well. That’s certainly interesting.
Section of one bookshelf protected by some kind of holy bond-of-secrecy-whatsit. Should have left alone. Could have broken it with hellfire, but am in most flammable location in known universe, decided that was terrible idea. Managed to undo holy bonds using profane combination of two parts own venom, one part hoarded soap spritzed through a salad mister.
So.
The angel has about two hundred books and fifteen scrolls concerning how to summon and bind demons. Thought at first maybe was for professional development. Too many. Angel has copy of the Big One, the one that can force a demon to do whatever summoner requests.
11:32
In fact, angel has all known copies.
Have only had it used twice before. Once some pissed aristocrat wanted to steal Love’s Labours Won, turned into whole thing. Second time group of students got very desperate trying to complete science fair project. Learned way too much about thermodynamics.
12:00
Theoretically should be extremely horrified that the angel has all extant copies of Big One and can summon and bind demons at any time.
Feeling am experiencing is...not horror.
12:15
Relevant pages in the Big One crossed out in indelible ink, ‘absolutely not’ written in weird cursive angel was using four hundred years ago. Impossible to see incantation.
Theorized why this might be throughout second bottle of whiskey. Enjoyed feelings of profound relief. Ignored feelings of vague disappointment.
Theory one: angel at one time planning to use Big One, decided not to. Reasonable theory, but does not explain why every copy is in this bookshop.
Theory two: angel bought every copy with the express intent of crossing out incantation so no one could completely control a demon ever again.
Unreasonable theory.
Will never mention any of this unless perhaps world ends. Probably not even then. What would that really change?

The Fisher King, Part 2: Part Two
Pairing: Spencer Reid x Female!Reader
Word Count: ~2.7k
Warnings: canon violence, canon language, canon talk of death, methods of kill, fluff and angst
Author’s Note: I do not own anything from Criminal Minds. All credit goes to their respective owners. If there is any warnings that exceed the normal death/kills from the show, I will list them. If you’ve seen the show, then it’s the same level of angst unless otherwise stated
Hotch and Gideon went to check on Elle, but you and Spencer are working on the book. They need you in here more than they need you worrying about Elle. Your stomach has been upset ever since the phone call. The best thing to do right now is focus on the case instead of Elle no matter how much your body is telling you otherwise.
Spencer has one of the libraries on the phone, and she put him on hold while she goes and looks for the book. The phone makes a signal noise telling Spencer that she has picked up the phone again.
“Mrs. Valez, are you there?” Spencer and impatiently.
“Yes, Dr. Reid, I am. I have a first edition of The Collector, published in Great Britain in 1963.”
“Wonderful. Mrs. Valez, I'm gonna read you a set of three numbers. The first is gonna be a page number, the second is a line number on that page, and the third is a word number in that line. Do you understand me?”
“Yes, I understand.”
“Alright, the first is page two hundred and twenty-two, line twenty-three. What is the sixteenth word on that line, Ms. Valez?”
“The.”
“Great! Page ninety-one, line eleven, word three.”
“Path. Does that make sense?”
“The path,” Spencer recites. “Yeah, that absolutely makes sense.”
Spencer spends the next hour telling the woman the page numbers, the line numbers, and the word number in that line. When he finished the entire code, he thanks Ms. Valez and hangs up. Now you have an entire message, another piece of the puzzle. While you’re doing this, Penelope worked on tracing the call. However, she didn’t get anything because the unsub used a disposable cell phone.
The worst thing is that he went into Elle’s house and shot her. CSU went there to see if the unsub left anything that could be used to track him. It sucks that Elle had to get hurt for this to happen, and you can’t even imagine how Hotch and Gideon must feel. Well, you can imagine because you can feel their guilt even from the hospital where they are.
In other news, Derek and JJ got more information on the victim, Rebecca Bryant. They went to her parent’s house to see if they couldn’t figure out who she was or what happened. Rebecca was sixteen when she was abducted, and she is eighteen now. She spent two years in that little cell from the video. She took off for school, but never got there. No one saw her leaving, and no one saw what happened to her. It was like the police never canvassed the area for her… almost like her parents didn’t care. Your best friends are working that angle, so you know they will come up with something sooner or later.
Meanwhile, you stare at the message that came from the book.
“The path to the end began at his start. To find her first calm her long broken heart. She sits in a window with secrets from her knight. Is it adventure that keeps him out of her sight?” Penelope reads. “Another puzzle?”
“It's a riddle,” you answer.
Spencer mutters to himself as he thinks about the riddle and the rest of the clues. His mind is working overtime, and based on his wide eyes, you know he has something.
“Never would it be night, but always clear day,” he whispers the passage that’s been stuck in his head. “That'd be... that'd be bright light. It's never night in Las Vegas.” Spencer grabs the phone that’s on the table and dials someone, speaking frantically when he gets someone. “Excuse me? I need to be connected to the field office closest to Las Vegas, Nevada, immediately.” A few minutes later, someone answers. “Hi. This is Dr. Spencer Reid with the Behavioral Analysis Unit at Quantico. Look, I need my mother picked up and brought to Virginia in protective custody as soon as possible. We're searching for an unsub who shot one of our agents today. I think he might know my mother, and I believe she may be in danger. She's at the Bennington Sanitarium in Las Vegas. Her name's Diana Reid. She's a patient there.”
Spencer speaks quietly as if he doesn’t want you or Penelope to know what he is saying. He feels embarrassed for the fact that his mom has a disease even though he shouldn’t be. When he gets down with the call, he excuses himself and leaves to his desk.
“Spencer?” Penelope asks, but he is already gone.
“His mom is kind of a sensitive subject,” you sigh.
“Hey, are you two together? I never heard what happened after that night you sounded so upset.”
“Yeah, he came over and we made up… or out. We’ll talk about it later. I’m going to check on him.”
You leave the comfort of the conference room to join Spencer at his desk. He’s so nervous to see his mom that he is biting his nails to the stubs. You reach over and pull his hand away from his mouth, but you don’t let go of his hand.
“Hey, she’s going to be okay. She is going to fly here with agents who know to protect her.”
“I forgot she used to always read me this poem. It's funny, huh?”
“What is?”
“I should have realized sooner than that. Nobody knows things like the fact that JJ collects butterflies except for me. People tell me their secrets all the time. I think it's because they know I don't have anyone to betray them to,” he sighs. He looks so scared and vulnerable that it breaks your heart. “Except my mother. I tell her pretty much everything.”
“I don’t think anyone would mind, sweetie.”
“Do you know that I write her a letter every day?”
“That’s nice.”
“It depends on why I write to her. I write her letters so I won't feel so guilty about not visiting her. Did you know that schizophrenia is genetically passed?”
You wish you can take away his pain. He’s scared of getting schizophrenia, and then he wouldn’t be who he is. Though, you would love him regardless… Yes, you do love him, but this isn’t the time to discuss that. You drop to your knees in front of him so that he’s looking down at you instead of up at you.
“I know you’re scared, Spencer. I know seeing your mom like that is painful and the reminder that it can happen to you is terrifying. But trust me when I say that seeing her like that is a helluva lot better than not seeing her at all. I’ve been around death my whole life, and it happens so often that you forget to cherish the people you love. I am here for you in whatever you need, okay? I’m not going anywhere, and I don’t plan on going anywhere anytime soon.”
He removes the hand you’re holding and presses it to your cheek, and you lean in only to kiss his palm. He runs his thumb over your cheekbone gently, and you give him a small smile. Spencer appreciates you telling him that, but you know he needs some time alone. So, you head over to Penelope’s office to see what she is doing.
You knock on her door, but she doesn’t greet you when you enter. You’ve never seen her this sad before, but you can’t blame her for feeling this way. There’s a lot of shit to be sad about, you know this, so you’re not surprised to see her like this. You take a seat next to her just as her phone rings. She picks it up without much enthusiasm.
“Garcia,” she answers the phone.
“Hey, it’s Morgan.”
“Derek, what do you need?”
You know she is really sad when she doesn’t flirt with him/uses his first name.
“Garcia, I need information on an adoption.”
“Name?”
“Adopted name is Rebecca Bryant, birth name is Garner.”
“Where?”
“Somewhere around South Boston, Virginia, thirteen years ago.”
Penelope does her thing, but nothing comes up.
“Nothing.”
“Are you serious?” he sighs.
“I'll try just the name with a wider search. Okay, there's a Rebecca Garner who was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bryant on December 4th, 1993 in Clark County, Nevada.”
“Wait, Nevada?” JJ asks.
Apparently, Derek has Penelope on speakerphone.
“That's what it says. The rest is sealed.”
“Garcia, unseal it. I need to know what happened to that girl's family to cause them to put her up for adoption.”
“Okay, I'll work on it.”
She hangs up the phone, and the room is plunged into silence.
“Spencer is going to be okay. He just needed some encouragement, I guess,” you try to veer the silence elsewhere. “I just hate seeing him this way.”
“You two are going to be fine, I know it.”
“We’ve only been dating a few months, but it feels like it’s been longer. I don’t know how to help him.”
“I’ve known Spencer a long time. Just being there for him is the best thing you can do. Let him know you’re not going anywhere.”
“I told him that.”
“Then you’re already doing the best you can. Now, I have some unsealing to do.”
“Have fun. Remember, you’re an angel.”
You grin as you leave her office and head back to Spencer. He isn’t at his desk but in the tiny breakroom. He is getting himself some coffee, so you slink up to his side and place a comforting hand on his shoulder.
“How are you doing?”
He just shrugs as he pours sugar into his coffee.
“That's why you're so skinny, you know? Too much coffee.”
You both look to the right and see Diana Reid standing there with two agents with her.
“Thanks a lot, guys. I’ve got her,” Spencer says.
“Do you want me to leave?” you ask him.
“No, I want you to stay. Please.”
“Okay,” you whisper as his mom heads over.
“You know I'm terrified of flying,” she says.
“I know, mom. I'm sorry.”
“Well, then why did you have those fascists arrest me?” she asks, clearly angry about all of this.
She is more scared than anything, but it’s only because of her illness.
“Mom, they're not fascists, and you were not arrested. I'm trying to protect you.”
“By forcing me to do the one thing that frightens me more than anything else?”
“Mrs. Reid, you know your son wouldn’t do anything without reason. You’re safe now,” you say gently.
“Who is this?”
“Mom, this is Y/N, my girlfriend.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Mrs. Reid,” you smile and hold out your hand.
“Please, call me Diana,” she says. “You’re the girl Spencer writes about all the time.”
You look at Spencer to see a faint blush dust his cheeks. You can’t help but smile at the thought of him gushing to his mom about you. You’d do the same if you thought your parents would accept him. They don’t even know where you work. They think you’re doing some meaningless office job because you don’t have the heart to tell them what you really do. She shakes your hand curtly, but something inside of her clicks. She can sense that you’re a friend, that you have such a kind and gentle soul. That you see more than the average person. Though, she makes no comment on it. She takes her hand away and clutches her purse as if she is scared someone will try and take it.
“I need to show you something. Follow us.”
Spencer takes her to the conference room where all of the evidence is.
“This is where you work?” she asks, taking in her surroundings.
“This is where we meet. My desk, you can see it, it's right out there in the bullpen area,” he points to it.
“The table’s round,” she observes.
She must feel safe and secure when she points out concrete things that she can see.
“Yeah. Just like I wrote you in my letters.”
“Yes, just like you wrote in your letters. Dr. Jessen gave me the book you brought. Marjorie Kemp. That particular book is one of her minor works.”
Diana starts taking things off the board, and you’re quick to jump over to her to take the skeleton key from her.
“Mom, no!” Spencer gasps, and she becomes suddenly shy. You finger the key but don’t put it back on the board. “Don't... You can't grab stuff off the board. That key is evidence. Mom, the unsub that we're looking for... the... the bad guy knows things about my colleagues' personal lives, things that only you would know. Do you write about them in your journals?”
“My journals are none of the government's business!” she yells, paranoid.
“I'm not the government, mom,” he sighs.
“Well, this certainly looks like a government office.”
“Mother, do you write about my colleagues' personal lives?”
“Why did you bring me here, Spencer?”
“I need to ask you some things about a man I think you might know. A bad man. He's killed some people, and he's holding a girl hostage.”
“You think I know someone like that?” she gasps.
You pocket the key and walk over to her, gently taking her hands in yours. She seems frightened, but as soon as you allow her to connect with you, she calms down.
“Diana, we’re not here to hurt you. Your son wouldn’t have put you on a plane if it wasn’t important, you know this. We’re not saying you know this bad person, but maybe you’ve seen him before or heard him before. We have a video of him speaking, but it’s a little hard to see him. Would you be okay with watching it and see if he sounds familiar?”
“Okay,” she whispers.
You and Spencer glance at each other as you guide her to one of the chairs. Spencer grabs the remote and plays the video for Diana.
“I had to make sure I had your complete attention. I assure you, you will all understand in the end why it must be this way. You might even thank me,” the unsub speaks in the video.
As soon as Diana hears his voice, her eyes widen. You know she knows who this is. It’s in her eyes even if she might not know it herself. Spencer turns off the video once she’s had enough to go off of.
“Do you know him?”
“I'm sure it's... Randall Garner.”
“Randall Garner?” you and Spencer ask at the same time.
“He was with me at the hospital. He's a very emotionally disturbed man.”
“Reid, I got to the end of the IP string,” Penelope barges in. “Sir Kneighf, the Fisher King, is Randall Garner. He's Rebecca Bryant's biological father.”
“I can't believe she's real,” Diana gasps.
“What do you mean?”
“Whenever he talked about Rebecca, he never said she was his daughter. He said all his children died in the fire. He spoke of a Rebecca more in the abstract. I really thought she was a metaphor, not an actual human being. An ideal.”
“A grail,” you gasp. “He thinks he's the Fisher King.”
“Who does?” Derek asks as he and JJ enter the room.
“Randall Garner, our unsub.”
“He believes you're all modern-day knights of the round table,” Diana says.
“Derek and JJ, this is my mother, Diana Reid.”
“It's your mother? Ma'am, it's a... it's a pleasure to meet you,” Derek smiles.
You stay by her side so she knows that everyone in this room is safe. If you leave her side, you’re afraid she is going to become hysterical. Hotch enters the room with a hardened look on his face.
“So, where are we on finding this son of a bitch?”
“I rechecked all the clues. There's nothing that points to an address.”
“The adoption records for Rebecca listed an address of the fire, so I made a call to Nevada, and it's vacant. No one ever rebuilt.”
“Nevada? So, we don't even know what state he's in?”
“I'll search the tax records and see if he owns any property,” Penelope suggests.
“Excuse me,” Diana clears her throat.
“Mom, do you want to wait out in the--”
“Just before the agents got me from the hospital,” she cuts her son off, “a man delivered this to me. It's a photo of a house with an address on the back.”
She takes out a photograph and hands it to you. You study it to memorization which isn’t hard. Once you know every detail, you flip it to see an address on the back.
“Shiloh, Virginia? That's only ten miles from here.”

Caiden Ambrose - Former MI:5 operative, excels in hand to hand combat over any other kind of weaponry. He’s hired by Leo Barnes to join Livia Prim’s new security team in Florida/Las Vegas. Caiden comes highly recommended by a former partner of Barnes’
Walker Knox - Ford and Cora’s first son, though he comes around before they’re married, Ford and Cora do tie the knot before he’s born. This is his 2nd generation picture
Carter Standen - English Literature professor at Washington State University (apparently has a soft spot for one of his students)
Dimitri Bournecelli - poet and novelist, he’s the first son of Liam Bournecelli and alpha of the Bournecelli clan. Despite being the oldest, Dimitri has managed to deny the animalistic “curse” of his family, refusing to allow his transformation to take hold though in doing so it’s just aggravating the beast inside. Because he’s the alpha, he is the start of a new line of animals and the one to cause the trigger of some other members of the family. Dimitri ends up picking up a prostitute in New York when he goes to visit his father and tries to help with his severely autistic cousin, David with his transformation. (David is a hedgehog...the men of the Bournecelli family have a genetic mutation that causes them to transform into different types of animals. What they turn into depends on some aspect of their personality, for example, David becomes a hedgehog because he curls in on himself and tries to hide) Dimitri ends up transforming during an incident with the young woman and becomes something similar to this:
Sam Draven got a new picture
Joseph “Joey” Grier - Son of high profile action star and slightly eccentric actor Johnathan Grier. *See below*
Joey usually uses his mother’s last name, Mcleod when people ask him who he is. He and Sebastian Haynes have been friends since kindergarten when Sebastian knocked him down and stole his cookie and Joey jumped him to get it back. The boys wrestled for a while, their parents were called and ultimately they ended up becoming friends. Joey is a nerd like Sebastian, loving Dungeons and Dragons, somewhat into World of Warcraft and an avid reader, as well as a comic book collector. He has tried a few careers of his own, having a stint as a model between the ages of 10 and 14, he stopped suddenly after an incident with one of the male photographers. His father left acting for a while and though no one really talks about it, he was on house arrest after assaulting the photographer that tried to assault his son. Joey is an artist on his own right, he paints and draws and briefly took on a job as a voice actor in a Norweigian cartoon show one of his college friends made. He hasn’t dated anyone in several years, not for any other reason than he can’t really find anyone that’s not more interested in his father than they are in him. He strikes up a relationship with Frankie before she and Sebastian get together.
Evan Rogers got an entirely new person and picture. He is a lacrosse player at O Fallon high school in Illinois though really wants to be on the stage. He ends up joining the drama class instead of woodshop and attempts to pursue his real dreams, rather than those of his father.
Last but not least is Trevor Vaughn. Trevor is trouble and usually in it quite a bit. So much so that he is sent to a boarding school for troubled youth where he meets a much older woman interested in more than just his future and he is entirely too eager to be whatever she wants.

Book of the month / 2020 / 05 May
I love books. Even though I hardly read any. Because my library is more like a collection of tomes, coffee-table books, limited editions... in short: books in which not "only" the content counts, but also the editorial performance, the presentation, the curating of the topic - the book as a total work of art itself.
Frank Sinatra has a cold
Gay Talese (with photographs from Phil Stern)
Reportage / 1966 - 2015 / Taschen Publishing house
Frank (Francis Albert) Sinatra determined show business in his day. His hits like the location promotion trilogy "New York, New York", "My kind of town Chicago is" and "LA is my Lady" as well as "Strangers in the Night", "Get a kick out of you", "Fly me to the Moon", "That's Life", and especially "My Way" are unforgettable evergreens. He was also unmissable on screen, for example as the original Danny Ocean (Oh yes, Mr. Clooney!) or in "Damned forever" (Oscar for best male supporting role). But "Ol' Blue Eyes" was more than a thoroughbred entertainer: as Don of the Rat Pack with Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Junior etc., with his countless women's stories (among others Ava Gardner, Lana Turner, Lauren Bacall, Mia Farrow, Grace Kelly) and his influence of the show-metropolis Las Vegas, which was just about to take off, he was not only a superstar, but among his colleagues he was called "Chairman of the Board" - half admired, half feared.
Gay Talese had been writing for years, especially for the New York Times, where he started out as an errand boy in 1952, and was in the process of transforming himself into a more literary journalist. He was commissioned by Esquire magazine in winter 1965 to write a classic celebrity portrait of Frankie Boy. Who was approaching the age of 50, already had to wear a toupee and was just losing his status as a superstar - to the "British Invasion" with the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Kinks, of all things. He was in a bad mood and bad terms. And then came this annoying reporter, with whom he absolutely did not want to talk. So he blamed it on his cold - because "The Voice" without a voice doesn't work. But Talese didn't take no for an answer, stayed in the wake of Sinatra and his gang - and wrote a story about it that would go down in history.
"Frank Sinatra has a cold" was published in Esquire in April 1966 and hit the wire like a bomb. This "journey into the innermost part of Sinatra's psyche and environment, showing the whole person behind the star; a mafioso and bully, a tyrant, a patron and weakling, a caricature of himself and a charismatic person who will win in the end." (WamS) has since been considered the ultimate showpiece of a celebrity reportage - and Talese, along with Tom Wolfe, Truman Capote, James Baldwin and Norman Mailer, is considered the icon of "New Journalism". Philip Cassier writes in Die Welt: "The text is one of those that makes any writer who is still halfway there realise that he is just a bungler."
Almost 50 years after its first publication, the story was reissued as a book in 2015. And this book is simply wow! Once again Taschen (it is already known that this is my favourite publisher) has succeeded in creating a more than worthy setting for an extraordinary content: Collector's edition signed by Talese himself, hardcover in a slipcase, letterpress-printed text, two different paper stocks, plus tip-ins and a fold-out, alongside notes and correspondence from the author’s archives - and pictures from Phil Stern, the only photographer granted access to Sinatra over an extraordinary four decades. Yeah, that Phil Stern who was already well-known for capturing all megastars of that time on film, including James Dean and Marylin Monroe.
“Exquisite… a tome tailor-made for journalism junkies… with its never-before-seen photos of Sinatra, Talese-penned introduction, and marked-up manuscripts from the archive printed on old-fashioned letterpress and accented in the swoony blue of Sinatra’s eyes, the TASCHEN book is the glossiest journalism textbook imaginable.” (Vanity Fair)
Fyi, here's that marvelous piece of journalism available for free:

TNG: “The Royale”
Commander Riker leads an away team to Theta VIII to investigate wreckage of a 21st century NASA spacecraft. The away team becomes trapped in an elaborate simulation of a cheap novel, about a casino hotel in Las Vegas.
I still remember being amazed the first time I saw the Enterprise beam aboard debris bearing the NASA logo (the cool one from the 80s!) and an American flag. Picard and Riker act like they’ve just found a chunk of the Millennium Falcon, and they know this is going to lead to a lawsuit. At that point, I had a distinct sense that this was breaking some cardinal rule of Star Trek, as if the show wasn’t “allowed” to talk about the United States or the 20th century. I think the only direct contemporary reference I’d seen in Trek at that point was the ending of “The Omega Glory,” so it felt like my world was an arcane legend to someone like Captain Kirk. (Perhaps I hadn’t noticed there had just been a Star Trek movie with Kirk drinking Michelob in 1986.)
Interestingly, the throwbacks seen in “The Royale” are technically from after the episode’s 1989 premiere. Despite using a NASA logo that was retired in 1992, the Charybdis was launched in 2037, and apparently disappeared in 2044. Hotel Royale, the novel which serves as the basis for Theta VIII’s makeshift Earth simulation, feels like something published and set in the 1980s. But “Texas” brags about owning a 1991 Cadillac “with only 80,000 miles on it,” like it’s some classic collector’s item. (Unlike touchscreens and artificial meat, this prediction has yet to pan out.)
This might come across like yet another holodeck episode if not for the premise that Hotel Royale is a very bad novel. So instead of everyone marveling at the realism of the simulation, we get to snark about how much it would suck to spend the rest of your life trapped in this book. Of course, early Star Trek: The Next Generation scripts aren’t exactly a cut above “endless cliche and shallow characters,” so it’s a little odd watching this episode try to persuade you that the writing is so much worse than, say, “The Schizoid Man.” It’s also strange that Picard is visibly pained to read “It was a dark and stormy night,” considering I barely get the reference, and mostly because of Snoopy. By 2365 you’d think the line would at best only be remembered for its appearance in A Wrinkle in Time, the intended irony long since forgotten.
Thing is, the Hotel Royale simulation would be awful even if the aliens based it on a great book. Even if Charybdis survivor Stephen Richey found himself immersed in The Great Gatsby, he’d still have characters endlessly reciting their dialogue, barely able to acknowledge user input that doesn’t fit the rails of the plot. The tedium is symbolized by compulsive gamblers and bad writing, but its cause is the limitations of the program, not that of the subject matter.
When the away team finds Richey’s remains, Riker astutely calls the Royale “window dressing for a dead man.” The simulation has evidently been running non-stop for over 300 years. (Whether this means the story plays out and resets every few days, or if the characters have been circling around the second act all this time, is not made clear.) The eerie implication is that the creators of this setting are so alien that they are either unable to monitor their program and shut it down when appropriate, or unaware of any reason to do so. That’s consistent with their total inability to even attempt communication with Richey. The more I think about how little I know about these aliens, the more fascinating they become.
