It doesn’t help that fans just fucking lie and deny what they see in text.
“Damian is half-Arabic descent and isn’t white.”
This is Damian’s first official appearance in 2006. And to those who say it was an artist mistake, here is the very next issue.
This isn’t some obscure thing. If Damian appears, this is his appearance 90-95 percent of the time. Save for his Son of Batman run, this is how he looks. Stop picking and choosing and act like this isn’t how he appeared just because they decided to address the white washed elephant in the room that is the mainstream white washing of Ra’s Al Ghul. Something they still haven’t quite addressed rather create a convenient narrative to not address it. Those little touches to his character such his love Lebanese cuisine and his verbal tics have as much relevance as Dick being Romani. So stop saying he is this representation of this angry and violent Middle Eastern person when that clearly wasn’t the inspiration nor intention of his character and when you don’t actually fucking care about Middle Eastern stereotypes. Not a fucking peep was made out of Bilal Asseleh or Simon Baz but y’all want to insult people’s intelligence that Damian is a victim of this? And if Damian was as consistently depicted as the same shade as those aforementioned characters, there wouldn’t be so many willing to excuse them. It’s colorism. Fuck off.
And then there is the selective accepted characterization of which you expect everyone to get on board with. Robins have killed before. Dick has killed in anger. Tim has killed by accident. Jason has killed as a fuck you to Bruce. But each represented something in their character. Dick is emotional and he makes brash decisions so he works to be more calm and composed. Tim hates that he isn’t precise so he analyzes every mistake, real or perceived. Jason acts in defiance because of perceived neglect and abandonment. And what do you think Damian’s thing is?
He kills when he perceives is necessary. That’s his thing and it seemed reasonable at first but any writer with a grain of morality knows where that leads. Damian is a kid who was raised in mountain top to be a leader of a world spanning and manipulative cabal of wealthy zealot Assassins. He was taught principles of dominance in all forms.he isn’t someone who lived among common people like Dick and Tim. He isn’t someone who lived on the streets like Steph, Jason, and Cass. There is a dimension of lack of relatability in his perception. This coupled with his training to be an heir to either Ra’s or Batman is a thing writers have to address or it becomes willful blindness to an inherent flaw.
He isn’t a child soldier. Child soldiers are disposable. Damian was valued by Talía and the League of Assassins. He was raised to be a Warrior-King. You can paint Damian’s training as abuse but it’s on the same line as you’d expect from characters like Wonder Woman who were raised in similar ways. It pales in comparison to actual child soldiers who are expendable and aren’t made aware of their choices and actual sociology is wildly different from Damian’s. Damian is a rich kid abusive situation that mirror people who are held to ridiculously high standards and expectations.
So when I hear that run of Teen Titans being wildly inconsistent to his character, I think of every time he has done some wildly immoral shit since his inception the same excuse he uses to justify it: he had to do it and it was necessary.
He killed the first Nobody because he threatened to haunt Batman and kill him. Stuck his fingers right through his skull. And Batman understood but lightly reprimanded him. So he unknowingly set a precedent for Damian to continue using his judgement to break Batman’s cardinal rule. And Damian followed it.
He did it in Batman Incorporated and there is no context here. He killed to save Batman’s life. He deemed it necessary to kill.
He killed a bunch of Superboy Prime Clones because he deemed it necessary.
So why are you telling people to not believe their lying eyes when he does this?
When he uses the same fucking excuse he has used since his inception.
It’s his character. It has always been this character.
If Grant Morrison, his creator, recognized this as a possibility for Damian...
You can’t then go on to say that his character in Teen Titans is wildly inconsistent or even comparable to the character assassination that was late stage Cassandra Cain’s Batgirl. This was 10 issues from his debut in Batman by the way. And even then he uses the same excuse except he positions himself as the line between “anarchy and order.” It is necessary for him to kill because Damian saw himself as the thing that kept Gotham out of “Bethelhem.”
Damian is never punished for it. He never fully gets on board with the not killing thing and if it appears that he does, it isn’t because he values human life or believes in the possibility of redemption for any character except himself. He does it to appease Bruce. When the whole of Cass’ Batgirl run is spent on Bruce questioning Cass’ principle to the point that he actually removes her mantle, you can’t just excuse the lack of punishment Damian for not just his past actions but also his present.
Damian has apologized exactly once for his actions such as murder, kidnapping Superboy, kidnapping the Titans, creating Guantanamo Bay in his basement, nearly eradicating a species, brutalizing and beating on Tim, and mind-controlling his own teammates. Only once and I already showed when.
You keep saying that the character should be redeemed but no writer has attempted to make him redeemable because Damian’s character necessitates to do so requires a complete overhaul of his personality. Talia, who fucking killed her son, took actions towards redemption within the very comic that was supposed to redeem Damian.
Point is that it is willful ignorance to even suggest Teen Titans is out of character for him. It’s been consistent for his character for 15 years. Acknowledge it and stop acting like it was a bug but a not a feature given that his creator fucking created these shitty type of teens all the time.
And to those saying that we shouldn’t hold the character accountable but DC is to blame, you didn’t seem to mind when Damian was Didio’s favorite. You didn’t seem to mind when Damian was DC’s poster boy for a decade. In fact, when Duke was introduced as a possible future Robin, the racism from the Damian fandom came out. You didn’t seem to mind when Damian became heir apparent. And DC introduced characters like Naomi, Kal’durr, Sideways, Teen Lantern, and brought back characters from limbo like the old Young Justice. They’ve shown willingness to change but it’s the toxic ass fandom that felt spurned by Marvel that pushed ideas from comic gaters such as the Anti-SJW equivalent to Champions. It’s not all DC’s fault. The Batman fandom has got to take some responsibility for the character’s direction because you bought in this character in how he was introduced from the get-go.
@ubernegro
You know, one would think last 5 years taught Damian Wayne fans to not get overly excited for DC trying to hammer him into roles and niches of his siblings like a round peg into a square hole.
@ubernegro made once on this blog a post detailing how Damian has been used as means to undermine and dismiss Batfamily in favor of the idea of Bruce and his “true” son and heir and how much of Damian’s character is built around that. I came to conclusion that the dissonance between how fandom sees Damian and how DC is using him comes exactly from this. Fans of Damian want him to be a real personality, someone who can grow and undergo character development. However, DC sees Damian only as a tool to bash rest of Batfam and thus will never give us that - if he can grow as a person it implies he wasn’t already perfect and thus wasn’t by default better than Dick, Tim, Jason, Cass, Duke or whichever Batfam meber the editor hates this week.
When you look at Damian stories from last few years you’ll see that those that are hated by the fanbase try to slot him into a niche of another Batfam member. Benjamin Percy’s teen Titans run tried to show he could fil lthe role of a team leader for other young heroes, a trait associated with Dick and, to a lesser extend, Tim. To the point the book tried to evoke 2003 Teen Titans cartoon, where the team leader was this weird Dick/Tim fusion, with a similair roster. And it went off like a lead baloon because Damian is a different character and fit to this role like a fist to a nose. And at first it could have been an interesting dynamic, with Damian as a wannabe leader whom Starfire needs to keep in check, but it became clear very fast we’re not qallowed to move away from it and see Damian outgrow this - because DC didn’t see him as a character but a way to bash Dick, he was supposed to be perfect and not allowed to grow. Thus he was stuck int oa role he didn’t fit.
Come Adam Glass run, DC decided to make Damian a “better Jason” isntead and we all know how bad it went. We ended with a story trying to outedge the family edgelord so badly Damian ended up committing heoinous crimes some people will never forgive him for and only went downhil from there and again, he wasn’t allowed to learn his lesson and grow because DC wants him to be perfect to show how much “better” he is. It was most ridiculous attempt at making a better edgelord since Marvel replaced Ghost Rider with Vengeance.
And now Damian got the very story arc Cass fandom has been asking DC to give her for 15 years. DC knew very well how important it was to Cass fandom so the fact it was given to Damian does not feel like a coincidence to me, but an attempt for editorial to now try to show how “better” Damian is than Cass. And let’s be real, he already sticks out in this story like a sore thumb, the whole thing needed to plaster Ras’ stupid face all over the story to cover that up. Because once again Damian is forced into a role that doesn’t fit his character for the sole purpose of telling fans of another Batfam member they should like Damian instead purely because DC editorial is spiteful.
And if you think this isn’t gonna be bad for Damian, let me assure you there is mroe than one reason why I keep using the image of Montreal Screwjob to talk about this storyline, every chance I get. You know, this one
Because I assure you, after that shit Shawn Michaels would forever be booed whenever he got on stage in Canada. It was so bad he stated to exploit it whenever played a bad guy, going to Montreal and directly antagonizing the crowds. Only making amends with Brett Heart would fix that. And I feel the same way Cass fans are never gonna forgive Damian until amends are made. We may ever seen him insult Cass if he ever pulls a legit heel turn.
There are good Damian stories and in those he is doing things unique to him. Being Dick’s sidekick, being friends with Jon kent, hanging out with Maps or Colin or Maya. But these are always dismissed whenever DC needs to get off to throwing other Batfam members under the bus. And something tells me this story will be no different - just another attempt to make Damian claim a place he doesn’t belong to.
