Sure, it’s too much for any one person to absorb, but still... 

We all know that some combination of easy access to home studio tools, world wide web streaming, social media delirium, legacy record industry collapse, and artistic resistance to creeping authoritarianism has (somewhat paradoxically) unleashed a tidal wave of idiosyncratically great music during the past decade, so it should come as no surprise that such a list as this would contain nearly 300 essential items. Yea, it seems nearly everything gets recorded and released these days (especially the zonked improv/collagist /noise/outer limits realm), but whether or not we listen to such items as frequently as we consumed Exile On Main Street or Cosmic Tones For Mental Therapy back in the day is irrelevant...the time is now, and as far as wild sounds from the outer dimensions goes, now has unprecedented bounty...listen heartily, for tomorrow, who knows?

KISS AWAY 4: War, children, it’s just a shot away

MIKE COOPER & TASOS STAMOU London Taximi cassette (Coherent States, Greece - 2017)

Somehow overlooked this last year,  an  absorbing sixty minutes of duo taximi (“the improvisation during the performance of traditional musical pieces, using soloistic folk instruments”) recorded between 2014 and 2017. Cooper is such a hero around the FRR office, his Pacifica improv and lap steel bending is nonpareil, so of course we dig this A LOT.  Tasos Stamou is new to us (though he’s been performing for at least a decade), an electro acoustic composer who knows how to loop a bouzouki in the right company. Like the best of this stuff, it’s hard to discern who’s doing what as the particulars coalesce.  There are patches of twang flotillas, percussive swells, John Berberian psychedelic swatches, extended neutronic tones, bouzouki yowling, rebetika detours and plenty of space for sighing. Superb recording.

Ashley Bundang drummed on that Totally Mild long player from 2015, and that record was stunning…here she is with Zac Denton from the Ocean Party (who we’ve yet to hear) and apparently they both play in a band called Ciggie Witch, who nobody told me about, thanks a lot, people. Anyway, PREGNANCY seem keen on that early 8Ts slink that elevates Au Pairs above Rat At Rat R in the ears of today’s behearers, and while that ain’t FRR’s particular choice of heaven up here, this duo are so awash with distinctive songwriting personality and thoughtful fills that we are won over, entirely.
