Wedding Planning Is Serious Business (FFVII, Barret x Tifa and Marlene, SFW)
For Barret x Tifa week. Silly Marlene drabble.
---
She's imagined every possible wedding. Silly, she might admit when you asked her, but on the other hand planning weddings is serious business! Otherwise people wouldn't make such a big deal about them! Papa and Miss Tifa were the hardest to plan for. She couldn't imagine them in fancy clothes. The outfit would be simple so they could move fast. And what was the best place? Maybe somewhere outside, with lots of flowers. Papa liked nature so much. She wanted to have a good idea for them. Someday they might want to show everyone they care, and she'd be ready!

Barret x Tifa Week 2020 Day 7
Written for the prompt ‘Highwind’
Barret did not feel relief for so long at Junon. The ratchetting dread when he was separated from Tifa. Nothing he could do but struggle futilely while he was lead to the gas chamber. As Tifa was parted from him and the gas was switched on. Even when hope sprang out of nowhere; Cait Sith’s unforeseen intervention. The hideous weight of time ticking him down as he rushed to look for a solution for Tifa’s predicament. Barret was not relieved until he had hauled the rope up to the deck of the Highwind. Until Tifa was back in his arms.

Fic: Room to Grow (Final Fantasy VII)
Title: Room to Grow
Fandoms: Final Fantasy VII
Characters: Tifa Lockhart, Barret Wallace
Pairing: Tifa Lockhart/Barret Wallace
Rating: Gen
AO3 Tags: Hobbies, Pre-Canon, Pre-Relationship, Awkward Flirting, OG and Remake Compliant
Summary: Tifa and Barret bond over an unexpected connection.
Notes: Written for Barret x Tifa Week on Tumblr, over at @somekindalady! With the prompt: Hobbies.
I might not get to write more for this challenge, but at least I was able to get one fic out!
Tifa didn’t know what to do. Three weeks into her plant experiment, she brought the struggling plant in its cracked cup to Seventh Heaven. Maybe it just needed light at a different time of day. Or maybe one of her patrons might have an unexpected green thumb, though she doubted it. She forgot about the plant at the end of the counter until Barret arrived halfway through the evening. The big man with a gun for an arm and a hidden heart of gold intimidated most, but Tifa saw him for who he was beneath. The sight of him always had her breath catching in her throat. She looked forward to the nights when he’d stop by to see her. “What’re you got there?” he asked, pointing at the plant. “Oh, that.” Tifa sighed, wiping her hands on a bar towel. Now some of the leaves were turning yellow and falling off the tiny branches. “I tried to grow a plant. It’s not going very well.”

And one last belated Barrifa Week offering.
I have never in my life drawn AC!Barret but I generally imagine them as getting together sometime post-game so I thought I’d give it a whirl.
[Image Description: Digital artwork of Barret and Tifa, shown from the waist up in their Advent Children outfits. They are inside of the new Seventh Heaven, leaning across the bar to kiss. Their eyes are closed, and Barret’s prosthetic hand is gently cupping Tifa’s head. Her left hand is wrapped around his bicep. /end ID]

Barrifa Week - Day 1: Early Days
The beginnings of coparenting... I imagine Barret having a hard time at first letting anyone else look after Marlene, but Tifa? He trusts Tifa.
I’m a little late getting started on these and won’t be able to do all the days but I’m here.
[Image Description: An uncolored digital sketch of Tifa, Marlene, and Barret, shown from the waist-up. Tifa and Barret are wearing simple tank tops, and Marlene is still a baby, her hair just growing in. Barret wears a cautious smile as he hands Marlene off to Tifa, just beginning to let go of her. Tifa is holding Marlene with both hands under her armpits, and their foreheads are nearly touching as they smile at each other. /end ID]

BxT Week: Fic (Hot Tub)
Suggestive, but not more than that. Maybe I'll write a version w/ more later. But I tried.
Tifa, Barret and a hot tub.
Tifa had come to the conclusion that hot tubs were weird. She'd never bathed in one before. Hot springs, yes, there had been a few back at Nibelheim. But this fancy, overly-decorated tub full of bubbles was a new experience for her and she wasn't sure yet whether she liked it or not. It was hard to relax when it felt like everything was moving around her. She glances over at Barret, who doesn't look much more comfortable than she feels. He was trying to be - he was wearing the sunglasses and had his head tilted back - but she could tell. "You okay?" she asked. "Hm." He turned his head over to her. The sun was bright through the big window, Costa Del Sol's weather as fine as usual, and the light glinted off of his shades. She really ought to be wearing them herself, she thought. "It ain't bad, I guess." "You guess?" she repeated, amused. "It feels funny. I've got stuff floating that ain't supposed t' be floating." That made her smile. The water certainly was buoyant. Neither of them had bothered with swimsuits for this; the villa was empty, with Cloud taking the children out for the day for once, and nobody could see inside the window from that angle. Marlene had been bugging them to try the "big fun tub" for weeks, so they'd figured, why not? "Same here, but you haven't been complaining about that." He chuckled. "I mean. Why would I?" She shook her head but was still smiling. She scooted over, leaned over and rested her head against his chest. "Maybe we're going about this the wrong way." That got his attention; she could hear the rasp in his breath as she settled against him. As usual he'd probably been waiting for this, but letting her make the first move; he'd told her once that his Mama had warned him not to be too pushy with ladies, and it had stuck. "What'd you have in mind?" "Not sure," she admitted. "But the others are out, so I figure, we might as well enjoy not having the kids around." He grinned, and so did she. Yeah, they'd all come for a vacation here, but when you had three grownups and two kids, you had to take turns giving people some free time. Maybe they could talk one of the others into coming by for a couple of days and enjoying the Villa with them, in exchange for taking the children out for a night. But really, any time spent alone with Barret was nice; he was gone so often trying to help rebuild things, simultaneously prospecting oil for the immediate energy needs and helping Reeve come up with more sustainable solutions. He'd been gone the most lately, and she'd missed him.
"I mean," he said, "I think we can come up with somethin'." She smiled and pushed up against him, leaning in to give him a kiss. Turned out that the bubbles and jets were good for a few things after all.

Carnival (FFVII, Barret x Tifa, SFW)
For Barret x Tifa week.
Fandom: Compilation of FFVII (post-AC) Pairing: Barret x Tifa WC: 1000 Summary: The two run into a relic of a pre-Shinra world.
If they'd arrived a day later, they probably would've missed it. Barret and Tifa had been traveling in the buggy for a while that time, headed to Cosmo Canyon to try to find more people to help them with the new projects, the renewable energy initiative that Reeve had brought them into. They could've asked someone else for help, a ride on the airship, but honestly they didn't mind taking the time, since they knew that Marlene and Denzel were both in good hands. They'd almost reached the canyon settlement; they hadn't expected to pass this on the way. Yet there it was, big as life. The sounds of cheerful organs and vibrophones hit them before the sights did, while the sun was still fixing to set, so they'd parked the buggy and approached it, walking side-by-side and ready for anything. But it came into sight soon and he could feel Tifa being caught off guard - he didn't complain when he felt her hand against him as the centerpiece of the strange place came into view. A gigantic ferris wheel, rising into the sky, decked with flashing red and yellow lights. "What is this?" Tifa finally asked, one hand still on his back. "An old-fashioned carnival," he said, staring at the flashing lights. The music was tinny and bright and real, not at all like the well-choreographed but soulless bells of Gold Saucer. "I ain't seen one in decades." "I've never seen one at all, not in real life." She was staring at the giant wheel, spinning slowly.   "Not surprised. You said you grew up with Shinra bein' in your town, right? They would've made sure they left town fast." He can smell smoke and cooked meat and cotton candy on the breeze. It's making his mouth water. "The fairs would pop up for a few days and then go away. Shinra didn't like letting 'vagrants and undesirables' use their power grid. That's why Gold Saucer eventually got big." She was quiet next to him. "I saw pictures," he said. "From my parents. I asked if we could ever go to one, but they never answered." He doesn't answer for a bit. So many memories to sift through. Being a little kid, rushing down those tall slides as fast as he could manage, pushing against the polished surface and imagining he could fly. Sitting in the swings and letting them spin him around and round, whooping as he kicked his legs. Being older, asking Myrna for a ride on the wheel, holding her hand as they went up and hoping that they'd slow down at the top so they could admire the view and be alone for a little while. "They would've been hard to find by then," he finally said. "More's the pity. I guess someone kept it in good enough shape, though, or we wouldn't be able to see it now. Now that the Saucer's hurting for energy without their reactors, they must've seen their chance t' come back." She nodded. "Barret," she asked, her hand moving down to his good one. "Do you think that Reeve will be okay if we take some time to see it?" "I think he'll understand." He grinned. "He woulda remembered these places too." They walk into the carnival hand-in-hand. He can see Tifa taking it all in, the midways and rides picked out in lights. The booths selling food that looked so much like the ones that'd been so popular in the slums, people hawking the kind of food they could set up and clean up quickly, fried cakes and caramel apples, chocobo beans and slices of pizza. The rides, flying swings and slides and the ever-present spinning cups, and the big Ferris wheel that flew above it all. "You wanna go on the rides, feel free," he said. "But I doubt they'd let me on 'em." He had to smile ruefully at that. Besides being a big guy, he was pretty sure the gigantic heavy prosthetic would dissuade the carnies from letting him on. "Even that one?" She pointed up at the wheel. "Well, maybe. It's usually the sturdiest thing." He looked down at her. "You know what it is, right?" "Well.. not first-hand. But my mother and father told me." She grinned back. "Said it was the kind of thing they would ride on a date." "Hm. Ain't wrong." He chuckled, looking up at the place, more memories coming back. He'd never had that moment he'd hoped for, where they'd stalled on top of the wheel. "Yeah. I mean, it's not like we ever had time for dates, did we?" "No, guess we didn't," he answered with a wistful smile. He'd met Tifa in wartime, at least in his own mind, and there wasn't time for dates in the middle of a war. Just quiet moments between battles. It had been enough for him, back then, but now maybe it was time to try something else. "All right. Might be a line, but let's give it a shot. Then maybe we can get a bite to eat?" "I hope so. What do you think will be good?" "Can't make that judgment without lookin'," he answered, amused. "But we'll take a look around when we're done." "That's fair. Come on, let's get in line." He kept smiling as he took her hand and squeezed it, and they walked together to the Ferris wheel. The wheel didn't stop when they were at the top, which was probably fine; that would've been way, way too perfect for a little chance encounter like this. But they let 'em stay on for a couple of spins, and  the view really was fine, the red canyons spreading out for miles around. Definitely beat Gold Saucer and its gondolas, he thought, and probably would've said as much if Tifa hadn't leaned in to rest her head against his shoulder. "You got the hang of this quick," he chuckled. "I'm a fast learner." "Ha... y'sure are."

Barret x Tifa Week 2020 Day 4
Written for the prompt ‘Later days/Goodbyes‘
Tifa stood by Barret's graveside, Marlene beside her. The funeral was over. She offered smiles and thanks to those who sought her out, the dispersing crowd leaving the surviving members of Avalanche in their wake. Ageless Vincent and Cloud. Nanaki barely changed over the course of fifty years. Shera instead of Cid, sombre Reeve. Her husband of a half century was returned to the Planet, but his legacy endured. The one who helped forge Avalanche together, who fought back against Shinra. But his death was not the end; one day in the future she would be reunited with him.

Barret x Tifa Week 2020 Day 2
Written for the prompt ‘Fighting‘
Barret pulled her back from the edge; Cloud vanished into the haze obscuring the slums. “We gotta go!” Tifa blinked, re-centering. How long until the bomb went off. If it was going to explode at all. Surely Shinra would not be about to blow up their own reactor? The metal of the catwalk groaned and shuddered alarmingly; now was not the time to pause. Tifa scrambled to her feet, each movement cause another shudder through the structure beneath their feet. Her ears still rang from the explosion. How much would Shinra know? How far back would they be? Barret ran ahead and Tifa pursued. “At least this part of the plan.” Getting back out of the reactor complex on the Sector Five side was far easier than the Sector Four side. Not much of the facility built-up here. A short tunnel and then some chain-link fence to deal with. Jessie’s second bomb to open the way out jostled against Tifa’s side as they ran. Little chance of pursuit but- The corridor terminated faster than expected. A world of difference between staring at the architectural plans and viewing this all in person. Barret skidded to a halt. “Tifa, about Cloud-“ Barret started. “It’s fine.” She shook her head. Not thinking about it. All those questions still unspoken. She pulled the bomb from her bag, running through Jessie’s instructions. Pull this clip, press this button, adhere to the door with this putty and press this button. She ran through the steps and backed up; Barret ducked in front of her, Tifa’s attempted shout of warning blotted out by the explosion. He had not gone far, simply put his body between the edge of the corridor and Tifa. Tifa shook her head futilely. “You okay?” Barret spoke, distant and muted. Impossible to tell if the explosion had impacted her hearing any further. “Yeah.” Her voice odd like this. Barret shouldered the ruined doors out of the way and swore; the staccato pulse of his gun-arm echoing. So much for any pretence of stealth here. Tifa was on his heels and bore witness to the problem immediately. A handful of Shinra infantry had been lurking; Shinra’s pathetic back-up for this situation. Heidegger seemingly had every faith in the Air Buster. Worked out better for them. Tifa sprang out from the door as Barret aimed at the nearest two Shinra goons. He might be able to attack fast, but he could not take all five of those present. Not the first time the pair had attacked Shinra; through-out their time together, the members of Avalanche had undertaken missions in so many configurations. Tifa and Jessie, Tifa and Biggs, Tifa and Wedge. Only with the reactor attacks had they mobilised so much of the group. But somehow the missions with Barret were the ones most comfortable. They were comfortable around each other, long since used to each other’s rhythms and reactions. No worry in Tifa’s mind of Barret catching her with a stray-shot. And Barret would know from long experience he should fear no attacks from behind; Tifa always had his back. Fighting was a fact of life since coming to Midgar; all her martial-arts training unknowingly preparing her for this. Tifa swept the legs from one grunt, caught another under his chin with her fist and took out a third grunt with a roundhouse kick to the head. A rush of air made her blink in surprise; a fourth grunt, hidden from initial view staggered and collapsed. Beyond him Barret lowered his arm. He stepped forward, eyes wide. “Tifa – I didn’t get you did I?” A rush of relief, of gratitude and despite everything Tifa smiled. “No. No I’m fine.” “Sorry. I just saw him and-“ They needed to move, needed to get away from here lest other reinforcements arrive. But- Tifa darted forward and kissed Barret. She held for long enough to begin to express her feelings, but not long enough to distract. Barret blinked at her, his lips quirking into a smile. “Thank you.”

Barret x Tifa Week 2020 Day 1
Written for the prompt ‘Early days/Introductions‘
Less than twenty-four hours after they first met, after Tifa extended Barret and Marlene an invitation to stay with her, and Barret wanted to help out. Fortunately a slower day in Seventh Heaven; no one saw him push the trapdoor open struggle up. “You should be resting.” Barret nodded, glancing back to the trapdoor. “I know. Marlene is, but I just can’t sit around. I need to do something.” Unsure if she would be so keen in his shoes; the brief conversations the previous day indicated Barret and Marlene managed to entirely miss Kalm on their way to Midgar. They had walked mile upon mile to reach the city, Barret carrying Marlene most of the way. She’d be dead on her feet- Her hand clenched at her shirt, right over the scar hidden beneath. Barret at least knew how he got her. Unlike her. “You sure you’re up to it?” She forced her hand back to the counter, thumb gripping the underside of the bar with more force than necessary. To keep her hand from straying to the injury. Barret shot her a smile. “Miner born and raised. Used to a spot of hard work.” But few miners around these days with the advent of Mako power. Another piece to Barret’s past. “Well-“ Tifa surveyed the bar. Far too used to doing things on her own, or co-opting Biggs, Wedge and Jessie to help out. The plates and glasses from the breakfast rush remained beside the sink. “You can do the washing up if you like? Not something on the line of mining but-“ He was already approaching the bar. “Really, anything for now. Just need something.” Barret glanced back to the trapdoor again. The half-formed idea of dispatching Barret to fetch some restock died there. Silly plan anyway; he was new to the city and hopefully new to the sector. No clue where anything was so not going to be of much help. But more crucially, she did not want to pull him away from his daughter. Life would be hard enough as it was when she woke up; Tifa’s own awakening in the perpetual twilight of a city without a sky had been quite the struggle. “’Scuse me.” Barret was close; Tifa pressed against the bar, Barret passing behind her. Fleeting sense of his warmth. Tifa blinked at the cascade of thoughts his proximity triggered in her and shook her head. Focus on figuring out the restock. But- Hard to fight the urge to glance back over her shoulder. To take another look at this new companion in her life. See him more relaxed, less tensed and ready to fight or flee. See him in a far more mundane situation. And all at once, her suggestion of the washing up was starkly and wince-inducingly wrong. Barret possessed only one hand; his other arm terminated in what looked like a gun. Hardly fair to ask- Barret went about his work unfazed; ran the taps, dunked the plates and cutlery under the water and washed with his remaining hand. His other arm remained at his side. Used to this and somewhat practiced. “I know you’ve done a lot already, but got a favour to ask.” Tifa glanced back, Barret still intent on his chore. “Yeah?” “Yeah. Gonna ask if you can watch Marlene for a bit while I see about finding somewhere for us to stay.” A pang in her chest. He would be gone; and with his leaving would reduce the time potential with him. “Don’t worry about it.” Bit too hasty, too blurted. “I mean; I’m not going to throw you and Marlene out. Take your time.” “Thanks. But gotta do my part-“ “Keep washing up and you can stay in the basement. Or-“ A cast around the room. “Or be the bouncer.” “Bouncer?” The word dragged his attention back to her at last. “Yeah. Keep troublemakers out. Resolve fights.” She shrugged. “That kind of thing.” He frowned. “What did you do before?” She smiled, her cheeks heating a little. “Oh, I did it. But makes it difficult to serve customers at the same time. So, if someone else could handle it-“ Barret nodded. “Two better than one for it.” “And in exchange, you and Marlene can stay here. Until you find something better.” He cleared his throat. “I- If that’s okay with you.” “It is.” She smiled wider. “Welcome to the Seventh Heaven family.”

Descending (FFVII, BxT, SFW)
Barret x Tifa Week. Drabble about descending into North Crater.
---
When Tifa had taught him to climb, he'd never expected to need it for this.
The wind was cold, biting. It stung his face and eyes, even with the cold-weather gear they'd picked up.  He couldn't see, and the wind blew was blowing them everywhere.
They couldn't talk to each other, not yet. But he could see Tifa look across at him, nodding. We can do this, she seems to say with her fierce red eyes. I know it.
He took a deep breath, prepared the grappling hook. Yeah, they'd make it. They were the Planet's last hope.
They descended.

Barret x Tifa Week 2020 Day 5
Written for the prompt ‘Cosmo Canyon’
Cosmo Canyon was a strange clash of feelings for Tifa. A respite – a true respite – at least. After leaving Costa del Sol and travelling along the old mining trails. After the survivors of North Corel and their bleak settlement. After the Gold Saucer and the uncomfortable secrets found around its base. After Gongaga and a frightening jolt from the past and far sooner than Tifa expected. A jolt oddly effecting Aeris too. Cloud was sat beside her on the opposite side of the Cosmo Candle, their conversation too low to hear. No matter. Tifa leant against Barret; he took the hint and put his arm around her. “You okay?” She forced a smile. “Yeah.” Not wanting to bother him with the concerns now. Of Nibelheim so close at hand but for now somewhat distant. To at last go home – or perhaps more accurately to where home had been. Five years gone and what would be waiting? Something like North Corel; those who escaped the fire attempting to continue their lives. A changed town accented with familiarity; perhaps the fire had not been so bad. Or perhaps nothing but crumbling and charred remains, mountain life overtaking what remained of home. Nibelheim was still an uncomfortable subject when it came up. Rarely came up in previous conversations with Barret over the years. And after North Corel the reasons were clearer. Neither she nor Barret were keen to dwell on their former homes and the events leading to their leaving them. Barret could remember his path; rescuing Marlene and making his long trek to Midgar. The mechanism of Tifa’s transportation remained unknowable. And unlikely to gain any answers when they made it to the base of Mount Nibel. Or perhaps revisiting home would be good for her. Barret was newly energized here after his unforeseen clash with Dyne, with returning home to what remained of the original North Corel. Or maybe not; maybe the past weighed on him still and instead it was the awe of reaching Cosmo Canyon. An almost mythical place, it’s inhabitants not out of time – there was so much technology on show – more out of attitude. They cared about the Planet, they believed in the same base credo fuelling Avalanche before they left Midgar and would do again after - or if Cloud was correct – with the prevention of Sephiroth’s schemes. They did not strike back as Avalanche had, chose instead to pull back from the world as welcoming as they were after Nanaki revealed their friendship. And naturally, it mattered a great deal the impetus from Avalanche had come from the settlement. From a man Barret met while travelling but never learned the name of. Asking the residents helped little. Many people left to explore, to try to change attitudes. Some never returned. The inspirational spark of Avalanche could have come from any number of them. Barret was of course thrilled and deeply humbled to be here. A long sought after dream now attained. Perhaps she might find the same. She could hope. Where Barret suffered the horrors of North Corel and the bedrock of the Gold Saucer, she would in turn suffer the horrors of Nibelheim and Mount Nibel. And come out the other side to- What? No destination lay ahead in the same way for her as it did Barret. Past Mount Nibel was little known to her. Wutai lay over there, but Tifa had never dreamed of visiting it – uncomfortably biased Shinra news article coming to mind too easily still and despite Yuffie’s presence. The comparison fell short but- She nuzzled closer into Barret’s side. She had been there for him at North Corel as much as she could be. He would be there for her at Nibelheim. Impossible to shake the certainty she would need him.
