desserts @ Chocorrant
Tina & Andrew took me to this place after having our lunch at Saigon Taste =]
Located on 124th Street, Chocorrant is a fancy (by fancy, I mean $$$$) cafe that’s known for their little treats.
The interior is small but they use the space well. The cafe itself is very long & narrow (slim entrance/store front but extends deep), & they chose an L-shaped style to arrange to tables & chairs/benches. The whole place was very bright & the large window gives the space plenty of natural lighting. The 3 of us sat in *that* corner just in front of their chalkboard.
They’re constantly baking, apparently. During our short-ish time spent there, they brought out 2 more batches of croissants. They have sweet & savoury ones. The one that Tina wanted is not in photo bcos at the time, they were actually still baking it. Will show you what we got later!
Little cakes & tarts. They’re all so pretty. Reminded me Carlo’s Bakery in Vegas. They have now opened several ‘locations’ in Edmonton BTW. The vending machine concept is pretty cool!
Andrew chose the mandarin yuzu tart for me bcos they were treating me again. Thank you!!!
So my tart & the 2 croissants. Andrew ordered the matcha one & Tina ordered the salted egg croissant. Both croissants had a runny/syrup-y filling; but the salted egg one was just oozinggggg haha Andrew got the matcha one heated up too but maybe bcos the salted egg one was like straight outta the oven, so it was more rich & flowing? I don’t know! They both liked it but it was like . .. “good, might recommend, likely will try other things next time”. You know what I mean?
As for my mandarin yuzu tart. .. 8.2/10~ I think the topping portion with the yellow & green chocolate petal/leaf was very tasty. It was both light & a little tart/sour. It was refreshing, to say the least. But the actual tart pastry portion on the bottom. .. Kinda dry & hard. If this was in cake form, ie without the tart but the topping & cream in between layers of cake, I would undoubtedly order again (maybe even to-go & bring some home!). But the tart was. .. =/

Sept 14: Albergheria a Nova, Walking Day 13 - 28 km
2600 ft gross altitude gain
Today was a fairly easy walking day as the fog persisted well into the morning and the high was only 28C. As we left town we encountered more of the interesting public art. After that, much of the day was spent walking through eucalyptus forests (Kim’s diligent research properly identified my arbutus trees as the invasive species from down under that now covers 7% of the country). We also passed several huge mansions that apparently belong to Portuguese families that made their fortunes in Brazil in the 18th and 19th centuries and had returned home to spend their new found wealth. We passed half a dozen peregrinos and lots of locals, all of whom wished us “bom dia” and several who offered “boa viagem”.
Later in the day, we met even more interesting locals. First there was the owner of the Cafe Leonel in Serem de Cima. Right next to the Camino route, her family had obviously gutted and modernized the cafe, in part to capitalize on the Camino business. Signs enroute advertised that peregrinos were welcome and that she had a stamp for walking credentials. The cafe was modern, spotless and the washrooms clearly built to accommodate walking groups (I will leave that to your imagination). She was helpful, friendly, took our picture to add to her collection on the wall and provided wonderfully sweet tarts baked on site that morning. We gave her one of the Canada Flag pins brought along for that purpose.
When we reached our walking goal for the day, we stopped at a bakery that served cold beer ( a very civilized country). Here a man with his 12 year old son struck up a conversation. He talked about his experience on the Portuguese and English routes, and how he thought that the central route was better than the coastal (“more real” ) but was now “too full”. He talked about how peregrinos were welcome in Portugal but lamented that many seem to be running a race rather than taking a contemplative journey. He also regretted that more visitors did not stop to get to know the country and its people better. He felt that only a few days here or there would make their experience much better. We found ourselves in full agreement based on our experience thus far. Another Canada Flag was dispensed to his son who seem very pleased, out of all proportion to the token gift.
The final group of “friends” on the road are the large numbers of cats out hunting mice and geckos in the fields early in the morning. While some seem to be well cared for pets, most appear to be undernourished and feral, and all are skittish and unapproachable.
Just as our new friend and son got up to leave, our cab arrived but we had to wait a bit longer while the driver had a coffee and read the sports pages. After all, this is Portugal where it is debatable whether the Church or their Futeball team is more important in their lives. Eventually we were off, and we continue to be amazed by how cheap taxi fares are in Portugal, a country where regular gas is $2.10 Cdn a litre. At the highway rate (5) the fare for the 50 km round trip to pick us up, including wait time for the driver’s coffee break was only about $32 Cdn. How much is a one way taxi fare to Edmonton’s Airport?
Anyway we are back at our 4* hotel for a hot shower and an evening meal. Tomorrow a taxi back to our bakery and on for another 25 km or so.

goods @ Jun’s Bakery
Who knew. .. who knew... As of April 2nd, 2018, Edmonton has our own little version of Paris Baguette ( x Tous Les Jours)!!!
First off, Paris Baguette & Tous Les Jours are (2 of the many) South Korean bakery/café franchises- there’s locations across the globe now but unfortunately, none in Edmonton. A few weeks ago, I was gifted some goods from Christina for my birthday: a box of customized bakery products from this place, Jun’s Bakery. & immediately, I was like. .. this looks so Korean! I don’t know how to explain it; the packaging style is unlike western bakeries. For those who have been to bakery/café franchises in Korea or just cafes &/or bakeries in Korea, you can relate, right?
Anyway, here we are~ Jun’s Bakery. It’s inconveniently located in a south side development area, where there’s literally nothing around it. It’s situated in a small/short strip mall that doesn’t have all the spaces occupied yet =/
Inside. There’s a small bench seating table facing the window, where you get a lovely view of the strip mal parking lot haha there’s like 5 chairs, so relly, no place for dine-in.
The store is quite small, consisting of a middle display table, & 2 shelving units on either side of the store. The smell of the shop is . .. I don’t know how to explain it once again. It’s not the Asian bakery smell, nor is it the western bakery smell. It’s just unique!
Let’s take a look at some of their products :)
Pre-packaged gift boxes. You can also pick your items & ask for a gift box (at no extra charge). They do an excellent job at fitting your order in (into a box of suitable size) bcos their products are already in plastic boxes of the same size already.
They have some teas & honey, as well as candies. On this shelf, there’s tea, meringues, & 6inch diameter cookies.
Not truly an open kitchen concept but you can clearly see all the action that places in their kitchen. Things are very neat & clean.
They have an assortment of cakes as well. They are pricey though; sitting at $40/cake.
Their middle display table has all sorts of breads/buns & a handful of tarts. Just to name a few, they have mocha cake, organic green tea tart, brownie bar, onion bread, almond squares, almond & sesame snaps. .. mung bean bread, etc. The variety is unlike other bakeries I’ve been to in Edmonton. What I can say (as a general statement) is that it’s very similar to the types of items you see in Korean franchises. I don’t like to use the word “fusion” & apply it to baked goods; & I feel like it’s not very appropriate here either. But it’s what you’d find in Korea, locally.
On the other shelving unit, cookies are the main type of product (there’s 1 type of scone in bottom left & 2-3 buns).
*Note: I’ve tried several items from here, & so far, my fav has been the German vanilla crescent cookie (located at top left corner of photo). A box of those is $10.
A small selection of loaves of breads are available too.
You have nooooooo idea how happy I was to visit this place. I really miss the coffeeshop scene in Seoul. ..
Tbh, I do find they are overpriced, but you’re paying for uniqueness of their goods. Their flavours are very mild, not too sweet, & doesn’t have that buttery or yeast-iness which I really don’t prefer. I’m not much as of a sweet-tooth so I find their stuff very suited to my personal taste.

See ya next time Barbados
Well Barbados has been wonderful! Exactly what I expected from the Caribbean!
We spent moms last full day here shopping, finding an awesome little bakery that had delicious treats for a really good price. Then we stopped in a coffee shop and mom enjoyed herself a nice cup of Italian coffee. We picked up some porkchops for supper and headed back to the boat.
Mike took a nap and mom read a book, while I took the kayak out for a paddle around the bay.
The last couple of days, a lot of sailboats have arrived flying a dark blue flag that says "sail the odyssey" so while I was paddling around I stopped to talk to one and asked what the flags were for. They had just completed a rally from Cape Verde to here, taking about 15 days. We had a short chat and I was off paddling again. I found another Canadian boat that is from Edmonton. Unfortunately the crew weren't onboard so I couldn't say hi, but it was still cool to see another Canadian flag flying. There are lots of Canadian tourists here, but that's from the cruise ships and flying in. This was the first Canadian boat we've seen other than us.
I got back to the boat and Mike was awake so I made some tasty cucumber, cheese and mayo sandwiches on these local salt bread buns that are so soft and tasty. They have definitely been a favourite for us.
We enjoyed some BBQ pork, some left over BBQ chicken from the night before and some breadfruit that Mike had cooked up from us. What a strange fruit...it's big and round, green on the outside and a light yellowish on the inside. You cook it for about 20 minutes and when it's done, it tastes like a mix between sweet potato and regular potato. A nice starchy taste.
We just took it easy in the evening and since every morning we've have been waking up around 6-7 (sometimes earlier 😮) we were all asleep relatively early. The sun sets around 5:30 here so when it's really dark, you think it must be late. Then I look at the clock and it's only 7PM and we are all fighting to stay awake longer. Oh well the ways of a sailor. It means we get the full day to do whatever we like!
The next morning we started getting everything packed up and ready to take mom to the airport 😭. I made us a nice big breakfast of eggs, hash browns and toast and then we loaded up moms stuff in the dinghy. Most of our beach landings have been really good and only a couple times have we gotten a little bit wet. Once we had a wave break right on the front of the boat when we were trying to launch but other than that we have been doing really well. This was the one landing that mattered since I know mom did not want to travel being salty or with wet luggage. All went well and not a drop of water got on any of her bags.
We headed for the bus station for the last crazy reggae van ride, but ended up getting a bus come first. A lot more comfortable and they still had the tunes going so we liked it. Once we got to the airport we all had a bite to eat at Chefette, the big fast food chain here. They have KFC and Burger King, but it's clear that Chefette is the most popular. We all got chicken caeser wraps which were huge and filled with really tasty chicken breast! Once mom was filled up, she went to check on and found out her flight had been delayed an hour or two due to snow and ice ❄️ coming from Toronto. Later we found out her flight was actually cancelled, because a passenger had a heart attack and died on their way to Barbados. What a terrible thing to happen. So mom was put up in a hotel for the night and then left today after being delayed again due to catering. Poor mom has bad luck. I know she was ready to get home.
So we hung around a while with her and then she decided to head through security and wait there while we got on with our day, since we still had to go to customs and do our check out to leave the island. We are headed to St Lucia next for a couple days as we make our way north towards St Kitts and Nevis where our first Caribbean booking is. I gave mom a big hug and as soon as she was gone I was missing her already.
Mike and I bought some stamps and mailed off some postcards before we climbed into the reggae van to come back to the town. This was our craziest ride yet! Our driver was very impatient, passing cars and driving super fast. On 3 occasions I was convinced we were going to clip the car in front of us. It was a white knuckle ride that's for sure. Anyways we made it to the port and did our clear out for the next day since we still needed to fill up on water and pick up a few things.
We headed back for the boat and decided to get ourselves a couple beer from the local bar right behind the beach. A taxi driver I was talking to told me they do 4 for $10 Barbados dollars, but when I went in, the guy said $3 each. So we bought 2 and went outside to drink them. We started talking to an English guy who has a business here and he said that they are normally 4 for $10. So he went in and got a better price and we ended up getting 4 for $6 haha. They definitely jack up the prices if you are a tourist. The trick is to get a local to go and buy them for you haha. Oh well. Even then it's only $1.50 US for a cold beer. We sat around talking and drinking and then decided we should probably row back out to the boat since it was totally dark.
We launched the dinghy and had a little splash during launch but nothing too major.
Today we have been doing water runs, rowing back and forth to the beach to the freshwater tap. There really is nowhere to get dockside water or fuel here which makes it a bit tougher for us, but it wasn't too much work to fill the tanks. I did our laundry and dishes since our next destination we will probably have to pay for the water we get.
We are heading into town to spend our last few Barbados dollars on some meat and bread and then heading for St Lucia this evening. We will sail through the night and arrive early in the morning. Another day, another island!!
