I don't want to just painstakingly copypaste my triple-layered self-QRT thread about it on Twitter and any other ones floating around but

I am very emotionally invested in seeing Penny, Arven, and (personally) especially Nemona again in the Scarlet/Violet DLC, after GF followed up the best 3 hours of Pokemon game story ever by having to abruptly cut it off the second these lonely kids finish opening up to you and say you can hang out with them anytime. Which you never do. It was some pretty painful whiplash, and I was sure the main point of the DLC was to relieve that, especially when their arcs don't seem quite complete yet. Very clever, evil marketing! But uh... well... about that...

It is very worrying that aside from a little "the story so far" montage, they have not been seen or mentioned in promotional material/footage whatsoever. Y'know, DLC for the game that's about how the real treasure was the friends you found along the way (literally, in Nemona's case), and even if your family and support systems fail you, you still have each other? Written from the heart by someone who said Arven's story is inspired by their own life? With the sappy Ed Sheeran song about reaching out for connection with others, that also seems to be named after Team Star? The game where one of the features the devs seemed most proud of was going on adventures and into boss fights with 3 of your friends? The game that ended with a fully functional and quite immersive bonding adventure with these characters you'd gotten to know and care about, that basically everyone thought was the best part of the game by a mile, and were left wishing the whole game was like that?

Yeah, I (and everyone else) have been driving around alone in that game for 8 months ever since finishing that story. 8 months of minor updates with a ton of the beloved characters functionally or literally gone, while we go around doing online stuff with nothing else to do in the world, with a single player postgame more barren than we had on Game Boy Color (thank god for mints and bottle caps though). I'm left just... wanting to go back to the way things were before I beat the game. Not to be overly dramatic, but this world I supposedly saved feels like one I failed to save. And I'm getting really frustrated. (The framerate hasn't gotten any better, either, but this isn't about that.)

It's like Game Freak (or whoever forced this thing out a year early, or both) never expected you to boot the game up again once you got bored of the Ace Academy Tournament, which the game acts like is the entire total of what you could want from being friends and "rivals for life" with your squad (I mean I'm the sicko that loves Tera Raids, so I'm not that bored, but still). It makes a bunch of implications that your adventure is just beginning, and then it totally just... isn't. Why is the E4 building closed? Why do you only rematch the gyms once? And most of all, for me personally: Why did we get access to our friends' rooms if there's nothing to do or talk about there? (Besides look for character study clues, which they have lots of)

All they could come up with when asked to write a newsletter email about what you can still do in S/V and why you should still be playing it was Raids. That was it. Remember when you had an endless challenge in the Tower/Maison that you could optionally take on with a bunch of story characters as your partners instead of alone, that motivated you to keep getting stronger bit by bit? Remember rematching gym leaders multiple times and watching their teams grow and evolve each time? Yeah, there's none of that here, because that would take more than a week to implement. If you want friends and you want battles, you'll have to do it yourself online now. They're not allocating any budget for that.

Your rival for life, who's so excited you're on her level now, who seems to have the passion and skill to be the your Battle Tower gameplay loop by herself if she wanted to, who battles you for hours offscreen with multiple teams, whose whole character arc is that she finally has someone she can do this with... is fully static, with one kinda mediocre team that never grows or changes. She can't keep up with you and doesn't know what items or EVs are. You have to get lucky to even see her at all. She is no more your rival than your Home Ec teacher is (no offense Saguaro, you're cool too). I think it's really, really sad.

I'm left nostalgic and pining to go back, having to cope through fanfic because my character can't spend the day with - or even so much as take a new trainer card photo with - the girl who said they might be her greatest treasure, without resetting my save, because she and the others are standing somewhere that the camera and internet features are both disabled.

Like, legitimately, I want to keep being friends with these kids the way we were before, and have the ability to do post-game stuff with them, like being able to go out and adventure together whenever in some basic, non-story capacity, or just, I don't know, maybe give them more than one line of dialogue in their rooms? I don't want a new region or new characters. Not yet, anyway.

I thought I was preordering the continuation of their story and rewarding the company for making me care about Pokemon so much again.

But, uh... I'm really worried that the people who own these characters do not care. And as I said on the trailer's comments before they turned them off (lol), I'll be pissed enough to not buy any more games if I'm right, and we're forced to abandon these poor kids. At the very least, it's some pretty garbage marketing to leave the possibility of that up in the air. If nothing else, that is a frustration that I'm going to keep talking about for a while, even if it ends up being fine.

I thought it was impossible, and I was being silly. Why not have our friends in cute new outfits as promo art when the DLC was first announced, and all they had was promo art? Seems like an easy slam dunk. Oh, they didn't yet? Well, I'm sure it'll happen eventually.

And then they weren't in the trailer either, months later. Are they trying to sell us on it or not?

The whole reason I want the DLCs. Still not a single word acknowledging them, just that little opening montage. Still no hints of how the DLCs have anything to do with Area Zero's ongoing story, either. How is a sea turtle linked with a landlocked crater?

So like... At this point I have to assume both DLCs start with you making your friends cry as they're left alone again, arbitrarily excluded from events they're more than qualified to be invited to, to make room for some new dweebs we don't need, who won't be given nearly enough time to be as compelling as Nemona, Arven, and Penny were, because that makes the trailer look more like a new game, and that's the only way they know how to advertise. More. New. Buy. Consume. Throw away. Buy. Consume. Throw away. I should assume this so that whatever we get can't be worse.

But they're probably not (self-aware enough / allowed / both) to write that. Your lonely / orphaned / anime-binging friends might just cheer you on for getting to go do something cool like being forced to train a new legendary because the story said so, then go back to being statues with as much relevance to your life as an NPC in a third story apartment that tells you what a hold item is.

Can't I just live in Paldea with my friends, in the version of the game we would have gotten if it was finished, instead of being pulled into these adventures for the sake of looking good in a trailer? (which it doesn't btw lol) It's not an unrealistic thing to want when that's what it briefly was, and I was so excited that it would keep being that I've been thinking about it this entire time.

I hope I'm wrong about all this, and next year I can look back on this post, happy that the DLC did actually allow us to continue to take care of these characters, conclude Area Zero's mysteries in a satisfying way, fix up some technical issues, let us relive some things that are currently once-only (including letting us see that photo album our character made but we had to screenshot ourselves), and make it fun to keep playing for years afterward, and let that be the model for games going forward, but uh...

They really are not showing me anything I care about in the game I desperately want to care about, that I saw - and wanted to defend - the heart in, despite the circumstances it was produced under, and that really worries and frustrates me. The surprisingly many great things about this game got my hopes up for an awesome postgame full of warm fuzzy feelings and cool things to do 8 months ago that just didn't deliver, and now, I'm not sure if they'll even let me pay for one, at this rate, because they're not advertising one.

Just throw us a scrap. If whoever's in charge here stops caring about this story, I won't care about the next one.

HAHHAHAHAHHAH GUESS WHO GOT ANOTHER AWESOME SPECTACULAR COMMISSION DONE

CONTEXT:

this is essentially a time-skip to my Team Skull Grunt adventures. Like this is Post Game Team Skull.

I actually liked the variety of How Team Skull "ends" throughout the Pokemon Canon. It gives me abilities to do this :3.

So essentially in my universe Team Skull doesn't disband we just kind of stop doing all the criminal shit. Guzma still wants to be leader and Plumeria and rest of us want to stay together too we just shift our focus on helping rather than hindering.

Since Po-Town is essentially ours we convince Nanu to let us stay there as long as we turn the Town into a liveable place.

BUT this is not a space for everyone, as Team Skull we still hold our values on helping poor and beaten down and outcasted People.

We decide to turn the town into a safe space for Outcasts and Runaways that actually is safe to live in (unlike the broken down mansion).

Its also functions as a mental health retreat center for those who need a place to find comfort and friends.

All the Pokemon we have are trained to help with mental health and comfort so essential like service Pokemon (I've always liked the concept of Pokemon that are trained for Psychiatric treatment, I got inspiration from this one Post a long time ago that depicted Pokemon that were service Pokemon and Hdjsjbsbn I want to find it again because I think its so cool).

While not required, I have toned down my Skull grunt attire to look like that image you've seen above but still with that Team Skull Patch to Represent my crew!!

My Yanma has evolved and now is a beautiful Yanmega who helps me greatly.

In this image I am just researching which Pokemon I want to start training for this new project. Aka which Pokemon would be best suited for helping out with mental health or which ones would be good for bringing comfort and relaxation to people staying in the newly built Po-Town.

Guzma and Plumeria are still very much the heads and leaders of this whole operation I just do my part in other ways and so do the rest of my Skull buddies.

ok so like souji/yu for SURE has a team full of super powerful, intimidating ass pokemon. debating putting arceus there bc of izanagi... i'm thinking like serperior, garchomp, that type of stuff. of course he also would have a luxray or smth bc cat 😸🥰

yosuke was honestly so easy for me to come up w an entire team for him 🫣 imo his team would include stuff like greninja (obligatory) and staraptor/noivern and, hear me out, meowscarada. magician arcana

More Hoenn with a return of Wally. God...Wally really is one of the strongest rival characters, I swear. Especially seeing how he grows over the course of the game. Going from that sickly kid who needs your help to catch a Pokemon that iirc isn't even able to actively attack yet to being your last real challenge before the Elite Four, I'm so proud of him ;w;

Not sure this is the answer to what that anon was asking, but this video provides some pretty fascinating and well-explained insight into why Nintendo is so picky about the terminology people use when referring to their products, ex: why they always refer to it as "Nintendo Switch" and never just "the Switch".

Tldw, it has to do with Nintendo's entire value being wrapped up in the exclusivity of their IPs, and how their competitors (who are much more powerful companies than them) will exploit any weakness to get those IPs. Remember that email from a Microsoft executive that leaked earlier this year saying he thought acquiring Nintendo would be a "career move". These threats to Nintendo as a company are still relevant, hence why they're still defensive about this stuff

Thank you very much for this video! It definitely helped me understand some things better. It's wild to consider the gulf between Nintendo's actual size and resources, and the profitability and influence of their properties. Especially with something like Pokemon, which has been discussed to death already. But seriously, where does all that money go?? I don't just mean it in a "the games and services should be better" sense, but like... I dunno, they have far fewer employees to pay than the Xbox ecosystem, but even greater influence... I just don't understand the economy on that level, lol

Thinking about it more, I think saying "The ___ Game" sorta acts like quotation marks. It clearly establishes the full title of the game. Whatever is between "the" and "game" is the title and that helps Nintendo clearly define what they're talking about. And why other companies don't care about being that protective. As the video established, law like this only matters to the extent it's enforced. Companies can choose to care or not care about all these details based on how precarious they feel their position is.

Kind of a tangent, but based on the conclusions of this video: as a supporter of fan-works, my views on IP law as it exists are mixed, BUT I do think the best option if you get heavily invested in a massive fan project is to just turn it into something original, even if its inspirations are extremely obvious. (unless it's like a remake/QOL romhack of a specific game or something, in which case you just have to keep on taking that risk.) But turning a big fan-inspired thing into something original, I think that's the most healthy option from a creative perspective, too. (Speaking as someone where me and my partner's original world started out as a more blatant spoof of Zelda/gaming tropes and then evolved into something with its own worldbuilding and spirit.) Just look at Arzette, the game that mimics the CD-i Zeldas... Nintendo is even promoting it! You've got stuff like Bug Fables that's obviously based on Paper Mario but has a lot going on to set it apart. And so on. I never really understood how studios were able to "get away" with having extremely blatant inspirations like that (although of course I support it, as stated above), and this video helped me understand why. It's more about the trademark establishing a "seal of quality" if you will, so it doesn't really matter how many imitators there are as long as Nintendo can hold up their own work as a gold standard.

Although there HAVE been instances where companies tried (and even succeeded) to patent game mechanics- IIRC Nintendo even tried that recently with some stuff from Tears of the Kingdom that they didn't even necessarily invent. That's where they lose me entirely. It's one thing to trademark characters and settings, etc. but copyrighting ideas of that nature is bad for everyone,imo.

This was a developing month for Callista! We started an ask challenge that will never be finished - I am sure. Got our first ask for Shu and Reiji for her - which was so fun to answer. We had a fun Pink Moon that month too!

Developed more about Lapin Demons too! Dialovers had their collab with Sanrio - so we explored the blogs marches. One of my favorite moments was talking about Kanato's character in the Tormented Reverie storyline. Want to shout out to my friend @the-sloth-woman for publishing her story Under the Surface!

Finished up the last of the ask challenge for Callista - sorry again I will never finish. Most of this month was about the Wedding of Shu and Callista - all prompted by you guys! I loved that you were all so interested! We had Shu's attire - the wedding set up ! It was asked about Shu's sadistic side.

We also got to talk about Burai and Rose's relationship! My favorite thing tho - is getting to muse about the different wedding traditions for the different major demon clans! It was so much fun!

Worse part of the month was missing Yuuki's birthday. I am so bad at that.

More Kanato art reblogs. The major thing this month was the 'Demon' Art for the Diaboys. Which is funny cause they are demons - but that is fine. My main 'problem' with this line - is that ALL THE BOYS are clearly different types of Oni - or like horned demon. But Azusa and Kino are Tengu.... like what? Why!?

Started the month with some Pokemon Musing in order to prepare for the new games! We looked at Yuuki, Kanato, Kanaye, Yukio and Rini's teams! There will be changes now that the new Pokemon are out - stay tuned for those post!

Probably one of my FAVORITE DiaLover lines Black x Aquamarine was released this month! I loved seeing all of the OC art for this~! It still makes me smile seeing everyone's art for this line - cause it was the best!

Personal Blog wise, I finally published the official layout for the character bios. Yuki was my first - and his came out beautifully. We also got a beautiful commission from @seven-re for Rose - which is absolutely perfect.

A Thanksgiving Invitation to Pokemon Unite!

Here in the real world, there is a holiday those of us in the U.S. celebrate called Thanksgiving, where we take the food and ingredients that we have and cook it all up for one big feast. The point of this dinner is to emphasize on that which we're grateful to have, that being food, and with the people we appreciate, such as friends and family. Yes, it's an opportunity to stuff our faces, but back in the day, food wasn't a guarantee, so it's a one-time dinner of the year where we all pause for a moment to appreciate what we have.

And while some of us may disagree, I for one am grateful to Pokemon Unite for what it's done for me and the people I've played with online. While I have not spent a single dime on the game, nor do I ever intend to, I do diligently play it as much as I can and always look forward to new releases.

Speaking of which, the theme of this poll is centered around Food Pokemon, or rather, producers in the in the food chain. Now, I'm not going to mull over whether or not pokemon are eaten in the games, nor will I entertain the idea that any pokemon could be edible, but some of them are clearly given the purpose of making food for humans. As a major contributor to the diets of humans, we should give thanks to these hard working pokemon and see if they deserve more than just our gratitude. Let's see if they have a shot at Pokemon Unite's Roster.

Just like my last poll, I wanted to avoid oversaturating the post with Grass Types. I mean, I don't believe everyone in the game is a vegan, but is it still cruelty-free if the Grass Types all move and talk? That's a disturbing prospect.

Sorry for fans of Arboliva and Scovillain, but my point still stands. I even had to exclude obvious picks like Exeggutor and Parasect. The former has no record of producing edible food for humans, while the latter is described as being apparently toxic stuff. So, no shiitake mushrooms for Thanksgiving.

Also, why did I add Slowking? Well apparently, Slowpoke tails are really tasty, and considering the tail remains untouched after evolving into Slowking, I figured maybe it's still edible. I mean, technically anything is edible, and they have the Regenerator Ability, so maybe we can farm some of the stuff?

Everything else is fair game, except for maybe Cherrim and Vanilluxe. I dunno, cherries are really tasty, and I also like my ice cream, even though I know that stuff is just snow. Also, I had to put Gourgeist on the poll, as you can't have a Thanksgiving Dinner without a pumpkin pie, eh?

One last thing, if you voted for Polteageist, I have made a moveset for the little spook over here on my blog. It's a bit of a long read, but I'm somewhat proud of it.

Thank you SO much for this response, it honestly made me smile and laugh so much when I really needed it--- like 2 hours after I answered yours, my dog got really, really sick, and I basically spent the rest of the day in an anxious depressed fugue. Terrible timing, right after posting an ask game 😓

But like I said your response was such a delight to read, so I want to break it down with the truth--- not correcting, I just wanna tell you all about it really because you know we both love infodumping 😁

So first up is Piers, the dark type gym leader from Pokemon Sword and Shield (the very first dark type gym leader actually, it took them 8 generations). He is most certainly emo and sleep-deprived, and almost a poor little meow meow, except he's not really misunderstood--- everyone in his town knows and loves him, because he's a super nice guy. He's the embodiment of the actual definition of punk, the kind of person that looks out for the little guy because he came from humble origins himself. It's been a while since I played Shield but I remember this guy being so geniunely outspoken yet respectful. He's such a chill dude, I think he has a lot of fans irl too.

Also, I am delighted to tell you that he not only listens to rock, he is in fact the lead singer of a rock band (love that you named him Bowie it fits 😂). And he loves and supports his younger sister, who is an idol so popular that her fans literally are the 'evil' team for that region, Team Yell 😂 They mostly just make a lot of noise and cause problems by accident.

Lastly I appreciate your stabs at making pokemon names, they're as valid as the official ones 😁 That fluffy friend is Obstagoon, evolving from Galarian Linoone--- I used one of these when I played Shield! It definitely has aspects of skunk and hyena in its design, but I think it's primarily based on European badgers (do you have those in Australia? The North American ones look different.)

Next gym leader is Whitney from Johto, originating in Gen II. She does look like Misty doesn't she, they both have tomboyish vibes (Misty has sisters in the anime, and I think they even take over her gym duties while shes off traveling so you're guess isnt far off the mark). You guessed right that Whitney is a normal type leader, and that she likes cute pokemon! Also I need to point out the delightful coincidence that you used the word 'scrappy' to describe her--- it's entirely accurate, but Scrappy also just so happens to be the name of an uncommon pokemon ability that--- you guessed it--- her cow has. What are the odds???

I mostly included her in this list so I could share one fun fandom misery about her: this girl and her cow are TOUGH! If you know what you're up against it's not so bad, but for new players and kids not expecting a difficulty spike so early in the game, Whitney and her Miltank (I like Milkmin better btw) will stomp and rollout your team so fast. But since she's so powerful she's also a bit of a sore loser, she cries if you beat her. I think she does call you baka in the Japanese games 😂

And our last mysterious man is the dragon tamer Lance, the Champion(ish) of Kanto, the very first gen! (technically your rival is the champion, but Lance was the Champion before he lost to the rival). He comes across as more stern and intimidating in those early games before the remakes, which you kinda need to be if you're going to command a full team of dragons (though literally only 3 of his mons are dragon type, but it's not really his fault since there was only one dragon type evolution line in gen I).

I loved seeing you call Dragonite Not-Charizard 😂 especially since Lance also has a Charizard, it's just not his signature mon. Dragonite is so cute and friendly, the official art always has it waving like that it's adorable 🧡

Fortunately for Dragonite, Lance is not an evil guy (but he is in the Pokemon Adventures manga, which is not affiliated with the games but still official. Evil!Lance has healing powers and can talk to pokemon, which is not a thing in canon except for N but that's another story). Lance is actually a pretty good guy in Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal (Johto, where Whitney's from) where he helps the protagonist infiltrate a criminal hideout. I always thought that was a cool part of those games, first time in the series having a powerful NPC battle alongside you, and then you get to challenge him later as the Champion again. I have no idea if Piers and Lance ever interacted in some spinoff like Pokemon Masters, I hope so. I can't imagine Lance would care much for Pier's taste in music 😂

Aaaaaand that about wraps it up! Sorry it's so long, there's so much context to explain to a newcomer to the franchise and I find it very very fun to go off on tangents as you know 😅 feel free to leave me an essay on each of the persona characters as payback, I'll read it happily 😄 and thanks again for the ask!! The ask games begin :3. I might not match your levels of hilarity BUT i will try my best~ (god bless our drunk-on-serotonin, 2am ideas) 1. On first impressions god this is the biggest emo, sleep-deprived edgelord I've had the pleasure of witnessing ^^ he probably must listen to prog rock in his free time too. He's either going to be horrible to the protagonist or terribly misunderstood; personally I want to root for this poor little meow meow and go terribly misunderstood. He lost too many pokemon battles as a kid and was bullied and now he is jaded </3. Which is why he has the big fluffy guy next to him! For emotional support cuddles! They are besties for life :D I think Mr. Trainer here should be called Bowie. As for his pokemon, it looks like either a hyena or a skunk to me. It's probably called a grimyena or something (sorry Dolphin ily) 2. She looks like Misty! But distinctly not </3. So, I propose this is Misty's sister, Stacey, who moved abroad on her own quest to become a pokemon champion :D. Judging by her friend, she likes all the cute pokemon, but probably also the normal types by the looks of it. A basic teenage girl, for the most part, scrappy and positive and probably all to eager to yell baka at any male teenage boys that challenge her. Her pokemon is distinctly a cow, I think Milkmin is fitting :) 3. He doesn't look very nice :(. Very stern and strict and probably scoffs at those with a very undeveloped team. It's clear he takes a lot of pride in what he does. However that is NOT a real charizard that I spot. It soft and round and actually cute, with a happy smile (he does all the smiling for the trainer, like a personal butler). But I was so frustrated with not being able to name what the not-charizard was that I just had to find out. It's a dragonite! I hope you are treated well and not abused by your (possibly evil) master, who I am deeming Mr. Rockfort. I hope Rockfort and Bowie get to go at it one day, I think that would be funny :3 Anyways here you go friend! So, I have been dragged out of my internet slumber leading up to finals to see this mess, and i dont post much, but I do have to rant here because people keep saying something that gets on my nerves.

NSR/NO STRAIGHT ROADS PEOPLE: THIS RANT IS NOT AT YOU! This is tagged because I am using concept art of Sayu. Please go on with your day. :)

Now, for the Subma and/or Pokémon fans,

As Im sure everyone who has been under the ingo tab for more than 2 seconds today has learned, there's supposedly a leak of pages from the PLA concept art book of the concept art of Ingo with a receding hairline and no eyebrows. If you don't know what Im talking about, here is the picture.

Now, I feel I have to address this first before I move on to my actual problem here. I personally see no problem with Ingo having a receding hairline and no eyebrows. Honestly it's kind of funny. Will I personally be drawing and/or imagining him with a receding hairline? For the most part, probably not, but I support the people who do.

HOWEVER, what I AM pissed about are the people who are saying that this is canonical. You have to remember that this is an art book, and while it is still official concept art, it is just that, CONCEPT art.

CONCEPT 👏 ART 👏 IS 👏 NOT 👏 ALWAYS 👏 CANON!!! 👏

A perfect example of this is Sayu from the game "No Straight Roads" by Metronomik (hi NSR fans, sorry if you're still here and have decided to see the fuck is happening in the pokémon side of tumblr). The lovely crew behind the character designs for the game let us see A LOT of the concept art for these characters, and probably one of the most distinct evolutions of the characters design in the lineup and probably the best example of my case is Sayu, the bubbly mermaid popstar. Some of her earliest concept art shows her even before she was decided to be a mermaid!

Now, is this what sayu looks like? NO! Can you draw her like that or write fanfic about her looking like that? Yes! But JUST BECAUSE ITS AN OFFICIAL CONCEPT DOES NOT MEAN ITS CANON. Early concept art of her even in her mermaid form shows a vastly different design!!!

Later concepts do get a lot closer to what her official design is, but, well... thats how concept art works! The later concepts are going to a lot more closely resemble the final product because its what immediately lead to it!!!

Needless to say, we don't know all the changes Ingo's design went through during concept phases to his official artwork, since Gamefreak only shows us so much in these artbooks, we don't fully know how his design has evolved over time. However, this

Are the official design and model that we got. Meaning his hairline could be fucking across his forhead for all we know. Please, do have fun and enjoy drawing bald Ingo, I look forward to seeing what this does to all the fanfics, headcanons (ha!), and the stories. But please, don't call that shiny head canon, I don't need to burst a blood vessel today. You can call me in denial all you want, but unless we see his hairline in some official artwork like pokemon masters or the anime or something, I will continue to sit on this hill until I too look like I've gone through hell after getting yeeted to the wrong time period.

But yes yes I 100% agree. Although it’s possible that he caught all his pokemon (except togepi and gible) after they evolved, there’s still the fact that togepi evolves with friendship and is largely associated with peace and goodness—though I do HC that he caught all his pokemon pre-evolution. (And yes, I know that he has the team he has mostly because they wanted to give him Cynthia’s team to draw those parallels and also make him an even harder bossfight than Cynthia, but in the process they implied he’s friends with his pokemon!!!) My partner and I have talked about the idea that some of his pokemon weren’t too happy about his decisions at the end, and that some of them might have even hesitated in battle because of how… fanatically he was behaving (and because in my personal [self-insert] universe, they had all become friends with you and they didn’t want to hurt you) which. I’m not going to really explore that much in this fic but if I ever write some kind of character study fic maybe 🤣🤣 I would like to go into detail about his motivations and what he was thinking before and during that scene… but I’m already working on so many fics right now 🤣🤣 we’ll see 🤣

The Owl House: Enchanting Grom Fright: Happy Valentine’s Gays

Happy Valentine’s Day owl ladies, gentleman and non-binary folks! It’s time to finish off this holiday in proper style with a LONG overdue review of enchanting Grom Fright and even longer overdue coverage of the Owl House. The Owl House was one of the best debuts of last year if not THE best, only in contention because Close Enough also started last year and looks to surpass regular show in terms of quality. But with stunning animation, tons of representation, and colossal worldbuilding. And given how i’m on record for thinking Star Vs went so far down the tubes they bumped into where Cthulu is sleeping, it’s nice to have another magic based show that seems to be on the right track: carefully building i’ts world, supporting cast and for today’s topic main romance. It also rather than just obliquely hint one character was bi and the other pan, actually goes out of it’s way to have a bisexual protaginst with a gay love intrest. As my good friend @jess-the-vampire has brought up quite a bit, star had plnety of options. .but no willingness to actually campaign for any queer rep, the way Gravity Falls head Alex Hirsch tried to, he still gets credit for trying, and Owl House creator Dana Terrace gets full credit for.

Terrace got her start working on Gravity Falls in line production before working her way up to directing for ducktales, being instrumental in how Webby was animated and how she moves and acts, and being the director for several classic season one episodes including “Woo-Hoo!”, “The Spear of Selene” , “Day of the Only Child!” which was one of my faviorites from season 1 and “The Beagle Birthday Massacre!”. And while I can’t 100% confirm she’s the only part responsible for starting Weblena, given she was director on an episode where a lot of the romantic subtext was in the visuals, she certainly helped so thank you Dana. Thank you a lot. Their adorable. Point is she’s a talented lady and wasn’t satisfied with directing, so she pitched her own show, combining tons of ides and stuff including of all things, Pokemon Red. I checked the article wikipedia had sourced, it was one of her happy childhood memories as it was one of the last things her dad gave her. Awwwwwww. That’s as sweet as it is painful. She’s also currently dating Alex Hirsch, something I was entirely unaware of but find also adorable. Point is i’m glad I looked into her as she’s a very nice person, and very much my kind of weirdo and i’m happy for her sucess and her singuarly weird show that sprung from that sucess.

Now that part of it’s out of the way the episode itself was an uphill battle as you’d expect. As anyone familiar with this blog is aware, but just in case your new, you tend to hear me bitching about Disney’s handling of queer represntation a LOT

For the most part Disney’s pretty bad at it: There was the string of “FIRST GAY CHARACTER IN AN X” they had going for a while.. that consisted of a character I dind’t realize was gay, a kiss I didn’t see, and a talk with a character who I honestly wouldn’t of been looking for had disney not patted themselves on the back with some giant sized hands because htey saved some pym particles for that occasion. Ducktales was unable to have Penumbra come out as gay more clearly because I don’t know Ducks can’t be day.. but they can be IMPLIED to be gay or pansexual as hard as the crew possibly can so they win anyway. Pixar was able to have a gay lead character for one of it’s sparks shorts out and even focused on him coming out of the closet and it’s very good and something I WILL give Pixar credit for... but not Disney Plus who go out of their way to not mention the lead being gay.. despite the fact the short opens with a gay space cat riding a gay space dog out of a rainbow and then it being revaled our lead is in a relationship not long into the short. My point is the idiots who won’t watch this for having gay characters are just going to turn it off, who cares what they think, why are you like this Disney. They need to do better, and be better and i’m getting tired of this shit.

That being said... this episode is a step in the right directoin as despite having to get past one obstructive asshole, not her words but damn if it isn’t the truth, as the rest of hte execs were fine with having a gay character, Terrace fought hard for it and WON, having a clearly gay character, and a clear road to a gay romace as the lead one, all because she wanted some representation in her works. So to honor this, I present this review in honor of love, effort and saying screw you to not having represntation because money. Join me under the cut and allt hat.

We open in the owl house, in the owl house, duck dodge push and shove, it’s how we show our love in the.. you get the point. Luz is learning yet another Rune, this time plant runes.. and already something I love about the series pops up: the fact Luz’s rise in skill is gradual but noticable. Each spell noticably improves in potency with time, going from simple lights to shaping them into simple constructs, and learning to control or time her spells and glpyhs so they launch she she says so, with each one getting more powerful the more she learns. And on top of that osmething I just noticed on rewatch of this episode is her tecnique in finding them evolved, something I dind’t notice the first time because I hadn’t fully caught up and checked this one out to see if Disney would actually let them go through with it.. and they did. Point is her first spell is found by accident, her second by realizing how her magic works fundemntally, both require skilled deduction and on the fly thinking and casting, so she’s already pretty skilled.. but now sh’es ACTIVELY seeking out a new spell here for the first time. She knows how she gets them, she knows each school is tied to a form, and she likely got the plant from williow since that’s her thing and she’s a saint. A demon but also a saint. They can have those too. It’s what I assume relicor is.

I miss that goblin demon bat man. Point is it shows an evolution in Luz’s thinking: while it’s a subtle thing she took a more proactive approach this time even if it took a lot of practice.. and it pay soff as by the time of her next rune, while it’s once again sorta handed to her she has less time to learn it, almost none, and finds it singed onto a ball.. and learns it effortlessly to the point where by the next episode it’s a crucial plot point. IT’s subtle but clever character progression, and stuff I really enjoy, showing our hero going from a bit inept but not helpless or incomptient.. to a force to be reckconed with and far more clever and strategic than yo’ud expect given her sometimes reckless and almost always happy go lucky attitude.

Luz worries teaching King about the internet was a bad idea because he gets excited about a literal cat fight which .. yeah... it was a bad idea but not because of that.. but because next he finds someone saying the earth is flat and she wisely yanks it away. It’s.. very sad that the absolutley maddening and easily debunked flat earth theory is still RELATIVLEY more sane than the stuff we’ve had pop up during the trump era and the cornoavirus pandemic.

But one of the main conlficts of the episode pops up as Luz’s mom messages her and Luz can’t bring herself to tell her anything and just sends a thumbs up. I do think this episode helps even things from the pilot a bit as it was a bit lopsided: While I got that Camillia was genuinely struggling with how to deal with Luz, and was offered an out and had to take it... the fact she sees NO problem with the normalcy camp, which comes off intentioanlly or not a sa parallel to conversion camps or camps to make autistic kids “Normal”. And as someone whose both bisexual and autistic, I naturally relate to luz way more as someone whose intrests sometimes just don’t quite fit with everyone else, and who dosen’t get how bad some of their actions were. THat’s why this episode feels like a necessary course correction: Luz is shown to genuinely love her mama and feel guilty.. but we see camilia genuinlely loves and supports her daughter a bit more. While it was clear from the pilot this shows it more, with her genuinely just wanting to know her daughter’s okay and checking up on her, and giving me the feeling that possible consequences or no if something bad WAS happening or she didn’t hear from her for a long time, she would’ve drove up there to get her. It feels like the writers realized the implications they accidently created and wanted to fix it, though I can’t say for certain. But if so good on you for course correcting, not every show does that.

But King encourages her, telling her she’s doing the right thing by lying and to “trust the demon on your shoulder”. Keep this in mind for later, but that joke is great on it’s own. But soon i’ts time for school and Hooty.. barfs out Luz’s books for her.

I haven’t been this disturbed since.. (Looks at the clock) About 2 maybe three hours ago when I watched a man have, if apparently shorter than the oriiginal cut as I wanted to see everyone else’s reactions dammit, sex with hiis car which was possesed by the mad ghost of his dead wife. Because that’s the kind of stuff i’m into when i’m not reviewing stuff. And before that Tinky.. just everything about tinky.

I do not have enough time to get into TInky here or why he exestially horrifies me. Or why Jeff blim is a living god. I will save that for a proper review if I have the time tomorrow. Point is I saw a lot today and that still tops it. Willow and Gus are likewise grossed out and want to leave.

Cut to school where Luz wonders what’s with all the decorations.. that remind me of this honestly

And frankly given the whole state of the boiling isles it REALLY wouldn’t surprise me if the decorations were indeed well cooked faces. But i’ts Grom time, which means elaborate gromposals (Some Dude asks Skara out with a beating heart and an elaborate medical proposal.. which.. points for effort. And for using an actual heart. Couldn’t get one for mine. ), dancing and someone being chosen for Grom Queen. WHich Willow hints isn’t as nice as that sounds. Before we can get into that though Amity bumps into them and gets into a tizzy before meekly greeting “Luz.. and Co”. which.. not going to lie.. is my faviorite gag of the season. Just htw way she adds them and just the way Willow and Guz both smile widely at it as if to say “That’s us!”. Amity drops a note and snatches it back. This will be important later, you all know why, point is Amity becomes Grom Queen.. and is heavily depressed with Luz following her to find out why. At the gym.. she does indeed ifnd out why: Turns out Grom is not some mutation of an earthname but is based around a horrifying entity lurking beneath the isles, Gromethious the Fear Bringer, who emerges from his slumber once a year and must be fought back and brings out his target’s greatest fears. Just like groundhog day only with less time loops and rodent abuse. Amity is scared of hers, and i’ll obviously get into this more later, and Luz simply suggests asking bump to opt out and Amity appricates the support. Awwww.

Luz heads home and we find out Eda is chaperoning and King is mcing. Eda is also rocking a suit. Just damn girl, damn. But Luz considers taking her place.. and gets laughed at, with Eda assuming she’ll have to save her and King just being kind of a dick. I mean he’s a loveable thoroughly cuddly dick but he’s still a dick... just more like a stuffed plushie of one. So basically exactly like Tinky. Look I mention him more than once in this review he dosen’t put me in the bastard box. It’s a great system. Naturally this makes Luz more determined than ever to prove herself and she finds Amity in the night, with Amity having been unable to get out of it.. and Bumps a resonable guy, he just wants a substitute and no one wants the job.. except Luz who galdly volunteers and insists ntohing scares her before the giant spider on the back of her head proves otherwise. Because of course it does, spiders are fucking terrifying. Kill then all.. except the pokemon ones. Galvaltula are sweethearts. As are Ariadoses. Sweethearts who can elctorcute or poison you but still.

So the next way Luz begins preparing.. and by that I mean it’s time for training. Sadly we don’t get an episode of Luz and Amity getting trapped in an 80′s fashion montage... I mean yes Rise of the TMNT also did that plot the same year, but we had two diffrent plots about someone getting trapped in an eldtrich sitcom and a THIRD this year, all entertaingly unique. Though we do get Luz pulling out an otter suit that’s adorable and she sadly still hasn’t worn yet. “This one says i’m an otter, with a dark side”. She also got thrown out of a school dance for.. wearing an otter suit. Okay the other things we saw in the pilot were understandable but htis is just.. baffling. Who cares what you wear to a dance as long as it isn’t horribly racist of nothing at all.

Damn you flanders and your glorious ass. Point is Amity shows up and threatens hooty’s life because.. he’s hooty. The fact he isn’t dead already is a testiment to how badass he is and how much money he’d cost Eda to replace. Owl Tubes don’t come out of a stygian hole in the unvierse every day you know. That’s only every three years. It’s basic styigan owl tube science.

But Amity wants her to be ready and that she’ll have to face her greatest fear.. and cue hooty popping up, poking amity in the face and asking if she wants to know her greatest fear. Really he can clearly hear everything in the house given he heard that, so he heard the death threat he just chose to ignore it. That.. was a mistake. And by mistake I mean we get a hilarious cut to the outside of the house as Luz tries to stop her love intrest from murdering her second mom’s tube monster. The result is some bandages and an eyepatch. To be fair that last one was just flaring up from a previous beating.

For this solem task of training, Amity has brought in her local disaster bisexuals.. aka her twin siblgins Eldric and Elmyra, whose greatest fears are dying alone and being stuck with Eldric. Both understandable. They conjur luz’s greatest fears which are.. some of the funniest shit I heard all year.. and also very relatable. Human souls in cat bodies, which is genuinely terrifying good job Luz, Jerks on the internet who mansplain things, relatable, and soy milk.

But Amity knows this is just the openign act. it needs to be something deeper.. so while Luz dosen’t realize it’s probably her mom issues she brings up her issues with her other mom: that Eda dosen’t think she can do this. Hence we get a giant eda putting Luz in a babychair. Before we can unpack how wrong that sentence sounded, Eda comes out, and marvels at how hot giant her is. But she’s quickly distracted from sex with a giant version of herself, which is not an easy feat, by the relization “Wait Luz is going to fight grom isn’t she.. fuck i’m going to have to save her”, though Luz holds firm on doing it to prove she’s fine and dosen’t need to be saved constantly. it’s a good conflict. Eda IS right that Luz is not ready for this alone, that she’s overcompensating and that Eda would, in normal circumstances be the one to rescue her. As we’ll see it’s not her who does it but still, were this any other foe she probably would be. But Luz’s motivations are equally understandable: She wants to help her friend not have to do this and she wants to prove she can do it. She just wants her mentor, the only person in her life up to meeting her that GNEUINELY supported her in magic to respect her. To have faith in her and actually see how far she’s come. And given how her own mother writes off her dreams, if not unrealistically, and before this she had no friends or support system to speak of outside her mom, it’s easy to see why this is so improtant to Luz: she just wants to make the one person in her life whose ever support her actually think it was worth it when in truth Eda already thinks it does and just dosen’t want her to die.

She’s just not good with talking to her or not condescending to her as her own ego is stacked sky high, probably because the whole curse thing meant Eda was an outcast by default and the system wants to either chain her to one form of magic and one only or shackle her to them as a hired goon. Her ego, while justified, is also a defense mechanism: a way to shield herself from the fact almost no one cares about her and one of the few people who DOES, dosen’t care what she wants or needs. Once the curse happened she lost just about everything and had to rebuild and thus build up walls around herself and kept everyone else at arms length till Luz changed her for the better. It’s just a tragic clash of two wills both with similar problems but both unwilling to talk about them.

But with time up, our heroes need to get to the diggity dance. So they indeed do and we get some fun sight gags, Willow makes corsages, that one girl with the cresent head somehow ended up with Mathomule and is not happy, as anyone who ends up with him should. And it’s time for Luz to face her destiny.. in a tux with a tutu because of course, and Amity likes it because also of course.

IT’s time to rumble, with King getting nervous due to eda’s prodding about mcing since his co-mc gus is really good at it, and introducing our champion.

No wait sorry he’s still trapped in Mojoworld. no it’s still Luz who shows off a seasons worth of skill by easily dispatching the first few fears and saying to grom let’s finish it.. before grom puts a tentacle on her head.

It’s to downlaod her fear.. which is Camillia. Granted we could all see it coming but still Luz obviously can’t fight her own mother or her own overwhelming guilt.. her mom did hurt her.. but she gets why and just loves her and wants her to be proud but dosen’t know what to do: tell her the trutha nd possibly loose a happy and fufilling life or wait until it all blows up. It’s a painful choice. So luz and king end up running. King runs first because he can’t handle it and Gus talks him back into the groove while Luz runs away because she can’t fight her own mom, understandable, and Gus encourages king to lead the crowd which he does. Amity and Eda follow Luz.

So Luz is backed down, facing down a monster tha’ts going to go on to everyone else next if she fails... and Eda prepares to interfere.. but it’s AMITY who faces her fear and dives in. And we find out just what her fear was as grom turns into a humanoid shape and rips the letter in half.. it was a grom invitation. Though conviently the who it’s adressed to was ripped out.

And yeah not going to save this one: It’s Luz. You know it I know it I didn’t even hide it in the intro. Even before the reveal in a bit it was obvious. But it also makes perfect sense. I’ve avoided talking about her character arc up to this point because I was waiting for now. Amity’s growth is the third major arc of the season behind Luz’s slow learning of magic and eventually induction into hexside and eda’s curse, which I lump in with Lilith chasing her since both were mildly entertwined and then entirely are once the reveal hits in the finale. When we meet her she’s an outright bully.. but we slowly see there’s more there. That she’s not really HAPPY or content, is contstantly under pressure by her family name, is outright bullied by her own siblings who don’t understand her. So Luz coming in, seemingly only being intrested in magic because i’ts neat.. understandably bothers her. She’s not a great person, bullying her old best friend because tha’ts what’s expected and being close with outright bullies because of that.. but it’s through Luz she starts to grow, realizing Luz is genuinely nice and genuinely sorry for any trouble she caused Amity, and evne then both cases were causaed by Amity’s own dickishness and outside forces, so it’s easy to see why she defrosts faster. Her siblings realize they’ve genuinely hurt her, and actually try to be good siblings from then on and help her, and slowly Amity learns to truth luz, trust in her, and accept her... and thus accept her feelings for her. There are gradual hints she’s growing attracted to her.. but her walls had to come down first, and it wouldn’t of worked from the outset. The show cleverly has the two build a genuine friendship, two opposities who work well together, so when feelings do happen it feels natural. It’s not “I’m in love with this person because I have to because you can’t be friends with someone your attracted to” bullshit or anything like that, cough star vs cough, it’s just well built catching feelings. I’ts how this kind of thing SHOULD go: niether went in intending for this to happen.. it’s just happening.

And Amity’s reluctance is painfully understandable, as Luz is the ONLY friend and support she has. Sure she and willow are patching things up, but WIllow would understandably choose luz over her and she’s terrified of loosing the one good thing in her life. Of course Luz would either say yes, and probably will some day, or let her down gently, she’s nice.. but it’s also understandable to be afraid that someone won’t take the reveal well. I’ve been there trust me, it’s easier when you let it out even if you get rejected, but I get it being hard to let out because you don’t want to loose a friend. I did not, and niether would she, but I can see why she wouldn’t want ot take the plunge. At least not yet. We’ll see this summer hopefully.

But we do get a shiptastic, gorgeously aniamted scene of the two dancing an fightin gin perfect synch, combinging luz’s new use of plant magic with amity’s mastery of abominations resulting in the two utterly decimating grom, likely in part because with two fast moving targets he can’t get a lock on and likely nees more fear and mass to attack multiple targets at once. Or just more tendrils. it’s a quick, beautful sequence that’s utterly glorious, being framed as romantic as any hetero scene of the type and rightfully so. A triumph and well deserving of this praise.

Our heros have won, get crowns, and King gets praise. All is well.. except Luz drops the crown once she gets home because she feels like she failed and feels lost about her mom.. though at least king gets it “I’m king and queen, best of both things!”. You tell em sister.

So we end with Luz genuinely responding to her mom, with some montage stuff as we see Gus and Willow poke a fear blob, willow fears bugs, understandable and Gus fears clowns...

And Amity looks out folornly into the night. Camilla responds to Luz.. and mentions letters.. which while Luz brushes those off.. we see someone sent them. And by someone I probably mean king since we now know only eda and him had acess to the portal, and given he was actively encouraging her to lie.. yeah i’m supscious. But we’ll see next season. For now this episode is fan fucking tastic, showing off tons of character development, being representative and sweet as all hell.. and being really funny. Tons of great gags in this one including the turtle guy from an earlier episode being forced to be adisco ball. This is easily the series best so far and if you haven’t checked it out, please do it’s fantastic as is this show. Check both out. Until the next rainbow i’ts been a pleasure.
