Hindu Mythology Event // Day 6 - Underrated Relationships
Lakshman and Urmila
(I had originally planned something different for today, but this fic popped in my head, and I amazed myself by managing to write it in a few days. So enjoy some fluff of these two after Lakshman's return to Ayodhya) (Also in AO3)
"Really, Mila. You don't have to..."
Lakshman was promptly shushed by his wife as she lead him by the hand into the baths. "I want to do it."
He had long ago sworn to himself that when the blessed day of their reunion came, he wouldn't deny her anything she asked of him. So, he stopped protesting and followed her like an obedient child.
Still, he would have preferred to do this by himself. In the last 14 year he hadn't given much thought to his aspect. The grooming and bedecking that were a vital part of courtly life had to be abandoned in the harsh austerities demanded by the forest exile. Royal silks and oiled hair were replaced by clothes of bark and matted hair, but he'd hardly care. Besides, for most of that time the only people that had been around to see him had been Ram and Sita, who were in the same unkempt and unclean state as he was.
He knew he looked nothing like the dashing prince that had left Ayodhya all those years ago, but seeing his reflection in an actual mirror (he had only seen it in rivers and ponds in the forest) and contrasting his looks with those of his twin made him realize just how much he had changed.
"Goodness, I need a bath!" He'd exclaimed, making his family laugh. In reality, he needed far more than a bath but he figured that was a good place to start. He'd tried to excuse himself from everyone to go get clean, but Urmila insisted on helping him.
"You must have expected your prince charming to come swaggering through the palace gates," he told her while she poured perfumes and flower petals into the water for his bath. "And instead, you wondered who was that wild ascetic that was walking toward you." He felt a little ashamed of not having thought of tidying himself up a little bit for her.
"Doesn't matter what I thought." The corners of her mouth curled up. "I'll have my prince charming when I'm done here."
She made him take off his tattered clothes and get into the water. He sighed when he entered the tub, it'd been a long time since he'd had a hot bath and he'd forgotten how good it was for his strained muscles. Urmila began soaping and scrubbing his skin, rubbing it with turmeric and herbal pastes until all the grime and filth that had accumulated in his pores had been drawn out, leaving his skin smooth and soft. She raised an eyebrow to the scratches and bruises that covered his body, but didn't comment on them. She'd already been told everything would be explained later.
Before they arrived back home, Ram had asked them to restrain from telling everyone what had happened during their exile, at least for a few days. Not everything was kept secret, though; the flying chariot that had dropped them in Ayodhya and the talking monkey that accompanied them weren't the kind of things that could wait for an explanation. But for the rest - Ravan, Sita's kidnapping, the war - it was better to wait until they were fully settled in before telling the story.
Lakshman agreed, there was no need to overwhelm their love ones with the full account of their 'adventures' and to make themselves revive them so soon after the facts. To think that only a few days ago, he'd been fighting side by side with monkeys and bears against an army of demons!
It's strange, he thought while he brushed off the dried blood under his nails. A part of me feels like it happened years ago, while another feels like I'm still there.
After she had cleaned him fully, Urmila move on to his beard. It was a long, tangled, unruly thing. She first trimmed it with sharp scissors and then shaved it off, leaving only a mustache, the tips of which she oiled and curled upwards. Lakshman felt oddly naked without his beard, but decided it was worth it after feeling Urmila's soft fingers against his bare skin.
She saved the hardest part for the end: his hair. It took a lot of patience and effort to untangle the rat's nest on top of his head. She had to first soften it with oils and then separated it into small sections that she would then try to past a comb through. If it were for Laksman he would have cut it all off and save himself the trouble, but Urmila had a frown of determination in her face. So he kept quiet and let her continue her ministrations, only wincing whenever her comb got trapped in a knot. "Sorry," she would mutter every time it happened. At last, his hair was freed of tangles and Urmila was able to run her fingers through it.
He sat there for some time, throwing his head back and closing his eyes, enjoying the feeling of her nails softly scraping his scalp. It had been a while since he'd felt so at peace. In the darkest times he had feared this peace would never come again. But there it was, after so long. Hopefully, it had come to stay.
"Lakshman," Urmila's whisper broke his reverie. He opened his eyes slowly to look at his wife, and his heart skipped a beat when he saw how she was looking at him. Her always bright eyes seemed to burn now, scorching with the unmistakable flames of desire. His treacherous mind made his stomach flip by reminding him of the last time that a woman had looked at him like that. But no, he told himself, this is different. There was no edge of possessiveness in Urmila's eyes, no tinge of desperation. Just a tender request.
She was so beautiful, this wife of his. Far more than he'd remembered. Either his memory hadn't done her justice, or she had grown lovelier with the years. Her round face was like a full moon, with dimpled cheeks that still gave her an air of innocence. Her almond-shaped eyes were like two brown pools that he could gladly drown in, with long thick eyelashes that grazed her cheeks like two black fans. And her lips were plump and perfectly curved, looking as soft as rose petals. They drew him in, irresistibly pulling him by an invisible thread until he was touching them with his own lips.
They kissed tentatively at first, as if dipping their toes in the water, before taking a full dive, growing more passionate, more hungry for each other. After a while, Urmila broke the kiss, leaving Lakshman panting, and taking a step back, she began to loosen her clothes. She had clearly changed since he'd last seen her. The girl he'd married never lost the shyness of a new bride, blushing and lowering her glance whenever she undressed in front of him. The woman that stood in front of him now didn't take her eyes from his as she unwrapped her saree and let the fabric drop to the floor, displaying her nakedness without a hint of shame.
Lakshman inhaled sharply. For years he had constrained his baser desires with the painstaking discipline demanded by the life of an ascetic he'd been living. Well, that constrain was thoroughly shaken by the sight of Urmila's naked body. Its perfection aroused the lust the had never been fully quenched, only lay dormant waiting for her.
She sat straddling him, laying on top of his chest and pressing her forehead against his. They both moaned when their bodies came into contact, but neither of them moved afterwards. They stayed perfectly still, holding each other so close they could both feel the other's trumping heartbeat.
"I spent so many nights tossing and turning in my bed," she said in a low husky voice. "Dreaming of the day I would touch your body with mine again." Her eyes now showed a hint of pain behind the desire. "That bed was so cold and lonely."
His own heart ached. He began a string of apologies, but she quieted him. "Shhh, don't apologize. Make it up to me."
He felt that it would take a whole life to make it up to her, but he was willing to start then. He began venturing his hands all over her, feeling every crevasse, every curve of her body, while she clung to his shoulders, nuzzling his neck with little kisses that drove him mad. He wanted to take it slow, to enjoy every second of it, but Urmila was too eager in her passion, making him struggle to keep her pace... Only to have him reach the finish line too soon after starting the race.
His face burned with the shame of it. "I'm sorry... Umm... I... It-it's been a while," he mumbled a pitiful apology. He wanted to slap himself. Not even when he was a green boy had he embarrassed himself so thoroughly.
Urmila shook her head, and lay limp on top of him, burying her face in his shoulder. After a few moments, he felt her breathing become ragged and her tears dampened his shoulder. He opened his mouth to apologize again, but she spoke first, her voice a tremulous murmur, "Please don't ever leave again."
A hard knot lodged his throat. When he had parted all those years ago, they both have made promises of faithfulness and eternal love. But 14 years was a long time. They both had grown up and changed immensely during their separation. They had barely known each other back then, and now they were virtually strangers. His biggest fear upon his return was to find that she had grown indifferent of her distant husband, or worse, that she hated him for having abandoned her in the prime of her youth, when she had been ready to give him all the love that she possessed. And he couldn't have blamed her for it.
He had practiced for years what he would say, how he would ask for her forgiveness upon seeing her. But when he stood in front of front of her, he was speechless. He'd stayed frozen in place, not knowing what to do, for what it felt like an age but must have only been a few seconds. Until she overcame her own hesitation and thrown herself into his arms, crying that she had waited for him, had thought of him every day, and hadn't stopped loving him all this time. He'd lifted her up and spun her around, crying and laughing, and knowing himself to be so lucky that she had guarded her heart for him, as he had guarded his for her. He couldn't repay her loyalty by abandoning her again.
He made her face him, and wiped the tears from her cheeks. Staring into her eyes, he spoke; "Even if I had to leave, I would take you with me," he swore with a voice choked with emotions. "I won't spend another day away from you." The smile she gave him was shaky but it warmed his heart nevertheless.
Lakshman was a man of the Raghu clan, who were always true to their word. And he gave her his word then; that for as long as he lived, he wouldn't let her sleep in a cold lonely bed again.

Her Skincare Secrets: An Interview With LA Dermatologist Dr Jessica Wu
Jessica Wu, MD is responsible for some of Hollywoodâs most beautiful faces. For the past 20 years, sheâs been paying house calls to the stars to help them look their best on the red carpet and beyond.
But you donât have to be a celeb to achieve flawless skin. Dr Wu believes that every woman is a natural beauty. Skincare coupled with cosmetic procedures should be used to subtly enhance yours, not completely change your face.
Her approach to skincare? As a top dermatologist, Dr Wu has access to the latest cutting-edge treatment, while her Asian heritage taught her to take a holistic approach that also includes diet and a healthy lifestyle.
Talking about diet, Dr Wu is the author of Feed Your Face, a book about the best diet for younger-looking skin. She also has her own cosmetic line, Dr Jessica Wu Cosmeticeuticals, that uses Chinese botanicals with anti-inflammatory properties to slow down premature aging.
In this interview, Dr Jessica Wu shares her skincare routine, her top tips for beautiful skin and more:
1. When did you become interested in skincare?
I suffered with terrible eczema as a child, then cystic acne as a teen. At one point in high school, my entire cheeks were covered with whiteheads and cysts. It really affected my self-esteem. I used to dread waking up in the morning and looking in the mirror, because I was afraid of what I would see.
After school, Iâd often stop at the drugstore, hoping to find products to clear up my skin. That was the start of my skincare obsession. I decided to become a dermatologist to find solutions to my own skin problems, as well as help others who want to have healthy, clear skin. I love what I do because itâs my job to discover cool new products and do clinical trials on new techniques â and I get to share these with my patients!
2. Whatâs your skincare routine like?
My acne went away after a round of Accutane in college, and now that Iâm 51, Iâm more focused on youth-preserving products. But my skin is sensitive and I still have occasional eczema flareups, so I avoid products with fragrance or anything potentially irritating. Â
In the morning, I splash with water and apply SkinMedica HA 5 Rejuvenating Hydrator, a light serum that contains hyaluronic acid, peptides, and antioxidants.  If Iâm feeling oily (usually when Iâm premenstrual) or if Iâm doing a TV interview, I use Hourglass mattifying primer on my T zone. Then I use a zinc-based sunscreen followed by foundation (Julep Cushion Complexion 5 in 1 Skin Perfector with Turmeric). Â
During the day, I blot with Clean and Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets. At night, I cleanse with Burtâs Bees Cleansing Oil and a muslin cloth. Twice a week, I use Refissa (a prescription strength retinoid) to help support my skinâs collagen.  The other nights, I use SkinMedica Lytera 2.0 to control sun spots, followed by my own Dr Jessica Wu Cosmeceuticals Dew Cream, which contains antioxidant Chinese botanicals and hyaluronic acid.
If I have any eczema patches, I use Avene XeraCalm Eczema Balm. Before bed, I use Avene Cold Cream Lip Cream all over my lips to make sure theyâre soft in the morning.
3. If you could only use three skincare products for the rest of your life, what would they be?
Cleansing Oil, Retinoid Cream, and Sunscreen.
4. What are your fave skincare brands and why?
Avene because itâs made for sensitive and eczema-prone skin
SkinMedica because it contains innovative ingredients such as tranexamic acid, found in Lytera 2.0,  which lightens and brightens sun spots without causing sun  sensitivity
My own brand, Dr Jessica Wu Cosmeceuticals, Â which contains Chinese botanicals that are natural anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatories
5. What are your top 3 skincare tips to take care of your skin?
Donât be afraid of retinoids. The biggest myth is that retinoids thin your skin. In fact, we have decades of research confirming that retinoids actually thicken your skin by building collagen  â IF you use them correctly. This means finding the right concentration  and formula that wonât cause irritation.
Listen to your skin.  What works for your friend may not work for you. For example, moisturize where youâre dry and cut back on âactiveâ ingredients if you get red and flaky.
Be gentle. You canât scrub away acne, sun spots, or dry skin; in  fact, scrubbing often worsens the problem.
6. What skincare treatments (dermabrasion, lasers etc) do you regularly have done?
IPL laser in the Fall to clear up sunspots that pop up in  the summer.
Emsculpt every 6 weeks to strengthen and tone my abs.
Botox every 4 months for frown lines, to lift my eyelids, and to stop teeth grinding.
Filler twice a year to soften smile lines.
7. What lifestyle habits do you have that keep your skin in top shape?
Iâm pretty careful about what I eat, especially ever since I researched and wrote my book, Feed Your Face. My diet is mostly fish (wild salmon, mackerel, trout), vegetables, nuts, fruit, and eggs. The fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids to keep my skin supple and control rashes. Green and yellow veggies help soften fight fine lines and wrinkles, while tomatoes fight sun damage.Â
I keep scarves in my car to drape over my neck and arms when Iâm driving ïżœïżœ UV rays go through window glass!
8. Whatâs in your makeup bag?
Thank you, Dr Wu!

My Favorite Healthy Shelf-Stable Foods for Stocking the Pantry

My Favorite Healthy Shelf-Stable Foods for Stocking the Pantry
Table of Contents[Hide][Show]
Iâve written about how to stock up a real food kitchen, and that includes a whole list of fresh fruits, veggies, almond milk, and eggs that last in the fridge for a few days.
But what about pantry staples that will last much longer than that? If you donât typically rely on processed foods or a lot of grains or beans, what can you keep in the pantry for those quick meals on a busy night?
Fortunately, thereâs plenty of healthy shelf-stable foods that will last just as long. Hereâs my list of nonperishable foods that I like to have on hand for quick snacks and easy meals in a pinch, not to mention an emergency stash.
My Favorite Healthy Shelf-Stable Foods
If you took a peek inside my pantry, youâd find all kinds of on-the-go snacks, supplements, drinks, and more. For years I made many of these from scratch, and still do, but there are so many great natural food brands widely available now at places like Costco and Thrive Market that Iâve built up a stash of favorite convenience items too.
Itâs always good to be prepared! Hereâs a list of my favorites I always stock up on.
Beef Jerky
Everyone loves beef jerky (especially my kids!), but it can be hard to find a healthy version. Most brands are full of nitrates, chemicals, and artificial preservatives. Instead, I stock up on:
Paleovalley Beef Sticks: I love these because they taste amazing and the Paleovalley brand is so committed to quality. Both the grass-fed beef sticks and pasture-raised turkey sticks are naturally fermented, flavored with organic spices, and come with a good dose of gut-friendly probiotics. Tip: Use the code WELLNESSMAMA10 with this link to get 10% off your order, or get them on Amazon.
Wild Zora Bars: These are my âmeal in a barâ option as they contain lots of dried veggies and even fruit as well for that perfect sweet and savory balance. They are on Amazon or you can save by using the code WELLNESSMAMA15 on their website.
Salmon Jerky: I eat as much seafood as I can get my hands on! This Epic salmon jerky is delicious and provides some variety and a break from beef. Subscribe and save from Amazon, and itâs also usually available from Thrive Market.
Of course, if you have ground beef and a few basic spices lying around, I highly recommend trying out making your own beef jerky at home. Hereâs my recipe for how to do it.
Sardines
Canned sardines are the perfect healthy shelf-stable food. Theyâre budget friendly, they last for years, and theyâre absolutely packed with nutritional value. Sardines are a great source of healthy omega-3 fats, calcium, phosphorous, and protein. Plus, theyâre low in mercury and other heavy metals, especially compared to larger fish like tuna.
I find the best price and quality is the Thrive Market brand, but we also like this brand.
Energy Bars
Nothing is more convient than a packaged bar that you can carry around with you in case hunger strikes. Unfortunately, so many âhealthyâ energy bars out there are filled with sugars and soy.
I love making my own protein bars, like these chocolate coconut energy bars and chia seed bars with dates and coconut oil. However, the homemade kind doesnât have the shelf stability that packaged products do.
So how to find a healthy packaged on-the-go snack? Kion energy bars are my first choice, as they donât use any unnatural preservatives at all â just sea salt, vitamin E, and chia seeds. Plus, they use quality ingredients and sweeten only with organic honey. (You can hear take on why Kion is such a great company in my interview with CEO Angelo Keely here.)
Seeds and Nuts
If you donât eat a lot of grains and beans, nuts and seeds make a great pantry substitute. Theyâre filling, nutritious, and contains lots of healthy fats.
My pantry must-haves that I stock in bulk include:
Chia Seeds:Â For making chia seed pudding, our go-to filling breakfast or snack
Pepitas: A key ingredient in the cilantro pesto I make to top my salads.
Baruka Nuts:Â I have the standard almonds, etc. on hand but I am always trying to get more variety in our diets. These are our new favorite nuts that the kids also love. I get them here.
Broccoli Seeds: This one might seem a little different, but they are great option for sprouting on the counter for a concentrated fresh source of nutrients. See this post to learn how easy it is.
Note: Make sure your pantry stays cool and dark, or consider storing in the freezer for long-term storage so they donât go rancid.
Smoothie Cups
Okay, so technically this is a freezer-stable treat (please donât keep them in the pantry!), but itâs just too good to skip over and fits the emergency meal category.
My kids know that the smoothie cups from Daily Harvest are reserved for mom. I love that theyâre pre-portioned and full of healthy ingredients, so Iâm still getting my nutrients while I take care of everyone else. Plus, they have great flavors like strawberry + peach or mint + cacao.
I also love gifting these to friends who just had a baby, as itâs an ideal plant-based emergency meal that takes no time at all.
Of course this is a convenience option that can be an investment, so itâs on my must-write list to try making my own freezer smoothie cups soon.
Powdered Greens
When you need a nutrient boost, itâs hard to beat a fresh green juice of kale, celery, and other healthy greens.
But if you canât get to the store (or simply donât want to leave the house), itâs not a bad idea to have a powdered alternative on hand.
Whole foods are hard to replace, but certain greens powders are close enough. As with any supplement, thereâs a big range of quality out there. Some brands contain hidden sweeteners, gums, artificial colors, and undergo harsh processing to get onto the shelves.
We always stock Organifi brand green juice. Itâs filled with superfood ingredients like chlorella, spirulina, beets, green tea, ashwaghanda, and turmeric for a detoxifying, immune-boosting tonic. I also keep their Gold powder on hand to make golden milk in a hurry.
Tip: Use the code WELLNESSMAMA for 15% off your order.
Soups & Bone Broth
Bone broth is a nutritional powerhouse that I like to keep on hand at all times! Itâs full of easily digestible amino acids, gelatin, and other gut-healing nutrients that also benefit our hair, skin, and joints.
This is only the case if youâre using true bone broth, and not the watered down âstockâ commonly available in grocery stores. Bone broth is special because the bones are roasted for flavor, then slowly simmered in water for hours (sometimes days) to extract all those amazing nutrients from the bones into the broth. It makes for a great protein-rich base to any soup, stew, or sauce youâre making.
While you can easily make your own bone broth at home (recipe here), it takes a few days and isnât shelf stable. I stock two kinds of pre-made bone broth:
Kettle & Fire: My favorite line of shelf-stable soups and broth. They make bone broth by long simmering quality grass-fed bones and is closest to homemade in terms of taste and nutrients. Find them here or on Amazon.
The Brothery:Â Another quality source for broth, conveniently packaged in pouches for easy use, but these do have to be refrigerated or frozen. I get them here.
Collagen Powder
If I had to choose a favorite supplement, collagen would be very high on the list! Gelatin (the cooked form of collagen) helped my son tolerate dairy again, and itâs done wonders with my hair, skin, and nails.
Collagen is more than just a beauty booster, though. Itâs an essential protein that plays a big role in joint health and digestion. In fact, its the secret ingredient that makes bone broth so potent!
One benefit of hydrolyzed collagen powder over bone broth is that itâs soluble in any liquid â and you can barely taste it (if at all). It stirs easily into hot coffee and blends seamlessly into cold smoothies as a wonderful hidden booster that your kids wonât even know is in there.
There are lots of good brands out there, but I love Vital Proteins. They source their collagen from grass-fed, pasture-raised cows, which is really important for overall quality.
Healthy Dressings and Mayo
Most premade salad dressings and mayonnaise use highly processed vegetable oils. Look instead for an avocado oil-based dressing or mayo from brands like Primal Kitchen.
Itâs also easy and cost-effective to make your own dressing or mayo at home just with some olive oil, vinegar, and spices. Here are some of my recipes:
Meal Replacement Drinks
This one might suprise you, since meal replacement drinks on grocery store shelves are typically full of junk. A clever brand called Ample found a way to use healthier, real-food ingredients to a high protein, low sugar beverage that doesnât need refrigeration. Just add water, shake, and go.
These do come in a plastic bottle, so I use them sparingly, but for emergency meals or an allergy friendly meal on the road, theyâre a lifesaver. Even at $7.00 a bottle, they are less expensive and certainly more nutritious than most fast food meals we might resort to.
These are also a key part of my emergency food stash. I like the berry option since itâs dairy-free and contains an extra boost of probiotics. I order them from the Ample website (get 15% off your first purchase with code WELLNESS MAMA) or from Amazon.
Snacks and Meals You Can Make With Pantry Staples
While some of these pantry staples are snacks or meals by themselves, some of them need a little imagination to turn them into something you can serve to the family.
Here are my favorite recipes for those days that you canât get to the store and need to rely on your pantry basics:
Spread canned sardines over healthy crackers. Add a little cheese if youâre okay with dairy!
Got a can of diced tomatoes lying around? Combine it with your bone broth and you only need a few other basics for this quick and easy tomato soup.
If youâve got eggs, applesauce, coconut flour and a few basic spices, you already have everything you need to make these apple cinnamon muffins. So easy, the kids can pretty much do it on their own!
Want a quick and healthy breakfast tomorrow? Plan ahead and make chia pudding. I like using coconut milk, but you can use whatever milk you like (and flavor it with whatever you have on hand. Almond butter, chocolate chips, almonds and bananas are all great additions!)
Speaking of breakfast, these almond flour pancakes are ridiculously easy. All youâll need is almond flour, eggs, and spices.
What are your must-have pantry staples? Did I miss any of your favorites?

Getting dressed with Evan Rachel Wood
Truly, there has never been a better, or more beautiful, robot to fall in love with than Evan Rachel Wood as Dolores on HBOâs Westworld. By turns docile or alluring, then menacing and verging on insane, Dolores is one of the most complex portrayals of womanhood currently on screen, in a year packed with strong roles for actresses. Whatâs most brilliant about Woodâs portrayal is the tenderness she gives to Dolores at what should be her most robotic, such as when sheâs being quizzed by her human overlords or struggling to remember a past life. One senses the deep well of emotion that Wood, with her watchful eyes, draws upon to make the character heartbreakingly human.
This evening, however, Wood is far from robotic as her team readies her for the Emmys in the home she is renting in Silver Lake (a respite from the deserts of Utah, where Westworld is filmed). She laughs that when sheâs asked about her fitness regimenâa requisite for actresses, it seemsâshe can now say itâs horseback riding and gunslinging, both of which feature heavily on the show. In person she is quick to laugh, whether at herself or her rather ancient-seeming cat, a world away from her intense roles.
Woodâs red carpet style is brilliantly distinctive, and she eschews the nude strapless gowns that many actresses and their stylists adore. Tonight she is in a brilliant white tuxedo (shoulderless, obviously) custom created by Jeremy Scott for the House of Moschino, her hair slicked back into a sharp, modern chignon. Tonight, she laughs, she wants a Moon Child from The Neverending Story lookâdewy and radiant in white.
Below, the most chic woman to conquer the Wild West discusses disrupting the red carpet, her love of Bowie, and the secret to looking goodâMoon Juice.
How do you feel in general about the getting-ready process?
I think if you have the right team and the right vibe, and if you approach it with the mind-set of having fun instead of the pressure of looking good and driving yourself crazy, then itâs actually a really nice, meditative place to go to before you walk into a chaotic space. And I actually like the people who do my hair and makeup! Toby and I have been working together since I was 21, and John and I have been working together a few years. So itâs nice; itâs like a fun get-together with friends.
Youâre known for a directional beauty look.
Growing up, I was really inspired by David Bowie, and how you couldnât put him in a box. He was always reinventing himself, and he really led the way for glam rock and androgyny. So that was the world I felt most comfortable in.
I think because itâs easy to fall into a trapânot of being vain, necesarily, but caving to the pressure of what you think people want you to be in this industry. For me itâs just always been kind of enjoyable if it was about expression, and trying to convey a certain vibe or idea. Something that I know will inspire a feeling in somebody. Especially now. I feel like if youâre a woman in pop culture right now, you canât help but feel like you have some kind of responsibility on your shoulders to inspire people to be who they are. So that comes into play.
The red carpet is very repressed.
Small gestures go a long way, surprisingly! Yes, I wore an outfit at an event, but there was a message behind it. And itâs the message that I think really stuck with people.
Thereâs definitely a message in Doloresâ rather straitlaced outfits. Do you enjoy the period aspect of the show?
The show is fun because Dolores is about four different characters at once; she has so many versions of her being. It was fun to really go and do something that I hadnât done before, so far in the opposite direction. She is this very stereotypical Disney princess, but there was always supposed to be something underneath that the guests were supposed to be drawn to.
It was supposed to be this deeper wisdom and consciousness. And I think every season is really going to be kind of different. I donât think any of us are always going to be doing the same thing. Weâll discover different parts and characters. Thatâs what really drew me to it: I got to play the really genuine, sweet farm girl, but also a very highly intelligent computer, and merge with this other, darker entity. And surf in and out of all the turbulence. So it was multitasking like no other role Iâve played.
The Season 2 teaser has just released, and itâs rather dramatic, to say the least.
[Wood laughs] Oh, man. Sheâs a very different beast!
The show builds very slowly and incrementally.
You feel like youâve really earned it when it happens. I think thatâs why the trailer got such a strong reaction, because people have been rooting for her to break free and be in control of her own destiny, and I think to see her finally on the front lines is really satisfying.
Do you wear makeup when youâre not working?
I donât wear makeup. I used to! I feel like Iâve gone through every makeup phase and really explored it. And I still do it, but I got to the point where I wear so much makeup for my job that when Iâm not doing a photo shoot or Westworld or a film, I donât wear any. Just to save my skin, really. But itâs kind of nice.
Oh, and sunscreen! Honestly. Thatâs it. Iâm so pale as it is, I have to wear sunscreen every day, but thatâs the secret to not aging. Especially now. Slather it on!
Do you have a self-care regimen thatâs not makeup-based?
After working on Westworld, I really understand why there is a reason to take care of yourself, because the stuff we actors have to put our bodies through is really intense. And especially on that showâitâs incredibly physical, weâre in 113-degree weather, and this season is much more chaotic, so thereâs a lot more physical stuff. Youâre also putting your emotions through the ringer, so that takes a toll on your body. If you donât take care of yourself, youâre going to get hurt. So itâs a necessity. I do a lot of bone broth and turmeric. I donât usually eat a big breakfast; I just have a protein shake. I drink as many juices as I can because I hate eating salads. I just kind of down that [laughs].
Whatâs it been like spending months on a horse? Delores is always on the run!
Iâve been riding horses since I was a kid. I started out riding English, and then Western. I wanted to barrel race, but I was working already. And now Iâm doing all kinds of stuff. But itâs great, because I feel really safe and secure in my ability and on that set, because they have the best in the business. Sometimes I get home from work and I just canât believe what Iâve been doing all day. No one would ever believe me.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you are known for?
I am an Actor and International Model. I am known for just being me, blunt and down to earth, which is very important, also my healthy diets I had the pleasure of giving all my authors. I make Vikkaszone behind-the-scenes videos and I love to share about my family particularly about my beautiful nephew, Krrish.
When did you first realize you wanted to be a Cover Model or how did it come about?
I have been modelling for the past 10 years all around the world. My first cover was for Grace Burrowes and then it just started. I was on hundreds of covers after that and it grew thanks to Anna for designing and helping me build my studio which is Vikkaszone Studio. She made the clothes, designed them, and executed Vikkaszone to where it is now. Not to mention my wonderful Designers, Photographers and all the Models who helped in making Vikkaszone a success.
What are some of the covers we can see you on or productions we can see you in?
Here are some of my favorite projects.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
What upcoming projects do you have in modeling?
I have a big shoot lined up in the 1st week of March with 6 to 8 models from Hollywood and aspiring actresses, who are from different ethnic backgrounds, as well as plus size models with variety of genres we plan to shoot.
What would you say is something surprising most people donât know about you?
I can sing and write poetry. I do sing classical Indian songs. I am a fan of Jagjit Singh.

What was one of unexpected things you learned in being a public figure?
I was told never to eat at a party, while cameras are rolling and or photographing you.
If you could pick one actor to play a character in your in the movie version of your life story, who would it be and why?
Christopher Reeve, I really relate to him and his ethics. Being SUPERHERO is one thing, but helping others as he did is another. He was the most handsome dashing hero of Hollywood, there is no one like him.

Whatâs your favorite memory?
There are millions. From remembering my mom and dad when I was a child, really stressed and tried to remember their faces when I was 6 or 7 and I can sort of remember. My mother is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my life. Then memories of growing up in New York and wearing red underwear from the carpet my dad threw away and making a superman costume from it going to the roof at the age of 11 and I almost jumped off the building and my dad had to remind me that this is not real. I actually thought at that age that superman is real. Then my 1st ever film shoot in Mumbai, India as a Leading Man. My first shot with leading lady 1st day, 1st scene and 1st on screen Kiss, oh boy I was a nervous wreck.
Do you have a favorite book cover that youâve done and why is your favorite?
My 1st cover I ever saw was for Grace Burrowes, absolutely loved it.
As a cover model, do you read any of the books that youâve modeled for? If not, what type of books are you drawn to as a reader?
I usually read Spiritual books, long back I read the Secret. I am reading Laws of the Spirit World. Honestly, I donât get much time to read my own books I model for.

If you had one piece of advice for an aspiring actor what would it be?
You must focus and be as natural as possible and mainly never ever give up. Just because someone says NO, it doesnât mean anything to me, except there is a YES waiting as I enter and open another door.
Thereâs been some cover models, that have fat shamed, what do you say to them?
Personally, I feel that everyone is entitled to an opinion, but no one, who has a basic understanding of compassion or empathy for others, would single out a personâs appearance and belittle them to the point they fell less than who they are. Basic common sense would mean no one attacks anotherâs appearance because everyone is exactly who they are meant to be. There are people who happen to be a size zero, but their hearts (whatâs inside) needs some serious adjustment. There could be many reasons why a person is where they are in their livesâsize, looks, health, genetics. To do a blanket judgement of a certain size, or even class, of people that way is cruel.
We are all here on this planet and time ticks away for everyone. I believe in helping and guiding, rather than point out any deficiencies. Just because people comment and say that I look or seem a certain way, doesnât mean that I donât try to improve dailyâthatâs physical, spiritually, mentally. I remember one of my author friends asked me to help her lose weight. I simply made a video of the smoothies I drink every day and posted the video on Facebook. The amount of responses I received was wild!!! I had people writing to me from London, Austria, Australia saying they have been doing smoothies the way I made them and they have lost weight and they feel better. Not to mention Turmeric tea which I also drink for anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties. It is amazing. The best way to help others is by showing not shaming. Common sense is not a flower that grows in everyoneâs garden. Sad truth, but it is what it is.
With all the romantic covers that youâve done, what is your favorite costuming to do?
I love doing Historicals and my fav has to be Pirate. I just love that look.
What is your idea of a romantic date?
Romantic dinner at the beach, while people play the violin.
What do like to do when you arenât working?
I love the gym, Racketball. I like to help others with their form or little advice when asked. I love listening to music, usually Budha Bar, Enigma and Depeche Mode.
Is there anything else you want to share with your fans?
Always be kind and one thing, I was taught by a Yogi long back, he said, âVikkas, what you suffered 10 years ago you must not suffer now holding that thought. Because that thing is gone from your life and your present is very important. I understand you get hurt, we all do but your focus should be NOW. How can I better myself today and have an imagination for tomorrow. Past is gone and there is reason why itâs called the past.â
Basically, it has a deeper meaning to it than I have explained it. Most importantly always love your elders, you will be where they are now. Learn to have patience and wisdom and learn from them. My parents are my life and I canât live one day without seeing them. My mom always says, âParents are like the Seasons of the Universe, they come and go but while they are here, enjoy with them, learn from them and most importantly TAKE CARE OF THEM.â
Kindly go to my stock website for your Stock photo needs for your Book covers.

Cold Processed Skincare: Refreshing for Your Face!
You may have heard of cold-pressed juice, but have you heard of cold-processed skincare? Theyâre similar concepts, both preserve the natural ingredients when creating their products. Kat Burki, the creator of eco-luxury beauty brand of the same name, has implemented the first ever Cold Processing Technology in her products. Arlenis Sosa, Georgia Fowler, Olivia Culpo and many more swear by her products. So whatâs her secret?
Cold Processing Technology ensures that the efficacy of the skincare ingredients is at the highest level and that all the vital ingredients and antioxidants in Burkiâs skincare are the most effective. When exposed to high heat, most ingredients put into other skincare brands lose the potency of their vitamins, oil, and antioxidants. This innovative technology brings natural skincare with better results.
Kat Burki has quite a few collections, great for all different skin concerns. Her products are free from chemicals and unnecessary fillers like water and alcohol, and your skin will thank you. You can choose from her Essential Radiance Collection best for achieving healthy, glowing skin, Complete B Repair to brighten, heal and correct, Body Treatment Collection to nourish and rejuvenate your hands and body and the Advanced Anti-Aging Collection to help keep your skin firm, plump, and wrinkle free!
The Essential Radiance Collection features a dual cleanse system, first with the Ocean Mineral Gel Cleanser with, you guessed it, 92+ ocean minerals to help remove makeup and excess dirt and oils without stripping the skin of its natural oils.
Then you go in with the Vitamin C Nourishing Cleansing Balm which turns from balm to oil, featuring 15% vitamin c, Camu Camu (packed full of vitamin c) berry, Gotu Cola (increases collagen production and reduces inflammation), and 8 different Cold Processed oils: Coconut, Sunflower, Jojoba, Rose Hip Seed, Olive, Avocado and Cranberry Seed.
Next, you mist the Super Nutrient Elixir onto your skin, to tone and hydrate your skin.
Then, you go in with PH+ Enzyme Essence, to balance the PH and acidity level of your face. It includes antioxidant rich turmeric to strengthen your skin, and orange hydrosols, pumpkin seed oil and papaya help invigorate, brighten, and firm your skin.
You moisturize after with Vitamin C Intensive Face Cream, one of Burkiâs top selling products, to provide nourishment and hydration to your skin, while also brightening with 15% vitamin C, Â prevents aging and smoothes the skin with wild Reishi mushrooms and an ocean mineral complex, all while firming and toning your skin. Itâs perfect for normal and combination skin types, and works well for sensitive skin.
Finally, you have the Power Trio Radiance Oil, with cold processed Tamanu, Kukui Nut and Raspberry Seed oils. Youâll feel refreshed and rejuvinated after using this oil, with Salycilic Acid keeping your skin smooth and blemish free, brighter, and softer. I love how this collection brightens, lightens, and tightens my skin, while keeping me hydrated throughout the day.
