It's August 11, which means Movie Health Community is celebrating 8 years on the internet!

Admin Brandon started the effort of Movie Health Community by posting a handful of evaluations from memory, focusing only on flashing light and motion sickness risks. There was no method, no pattern, and mental health warnings would not come to MHC for 2 years. Most of those initial evaluations have been redone since then, most recently with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. We started with Ant-Man. When we include evaluations that have been completed and are pending release right now, we are up to 1,069 feature films evaluated.

In the last year, Admin Brandon has improved the record-keeping practices here, and re-counted how many evaluations of feature films we've posted. In the past, that count has mistakenly included a short film, so in one of the two pictures here, we have included stills from each 100-movie milestone we've hit over the years, from our 100th movie (The Jungle Book, 2016), to our 1,000th (Fantasia 2000, 2000).

Admin Brandon is almost done covering the unevaluated feature films in his Vudu/Fandango account, and when that is finished, our efforts may be scaled back somewhat from our current rate of 6+ evaluations per week.

In the last year, we have run into some difficulties around streaming movies. On Netflix, as we usually use an account in a family sharing agreement, we have been unable to access content on that platform with their new rules around household sharing. Access to a reliable account on Max has become sporadic as well. In spite of all this, we still accept requests outside of the Weekly Plan from our Patrons.

We now have 9 Flashing Lights Warning Tracks available on the $5 tier of our Patreon page, with the next one coming at the end of this month. There is an announcement of which movie the 10th one will cover at the end of the FLWT for Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, and we will be posting about it on Monday.

Zudem soll eine alte Bedrohung zurückkehren, sodass die kleine Familie gezwungen ist, ihr Zuhause zu verlassen. Auf ihrer Flucht finden sie Zuflucht in der exotischen Meereswelt von Pandora.

„Avatar: The Way of Water“ – Hintergründe und Kinostart

„Avatar - Aufbruch nach Pandora“ war nicht nur aus finanzieller Sicht ein großer Erfolg: Auch auf dem Gebiet der 3D-Technik konnte der Film neue Standards setzen. Lebensecht wirkende Figuren wurden per Motion-Capture-Verfahren auf einem fast komplett animierten Sound of Freedomten in Szene gesetzt und machten das Mammut-Projekt zu einem Meilenstein der Filmgeschichte. James Cameron hat deshalb schon im Jahr 2006 erstmals über einen Nachfolger nachgedacht. Inzwischen ist das Projekt gewachsen – nicht weniger als eine Familiensaga, die sich über insgesamt fünf Filme erstreckt, will Cameron in den nächsten Jahren in die Kinos bringen.

Als Unterstützung bringt der Starregisseur ein ganzes Kreativ-Team mit. So wird etwa Josh Friedman, Drehbuchautor von Steven Spielbergs „Krieg der Welten“, am zweiten Teil von „Avatar“ mitwirken. Um den hohen Erwartungen des Publikums gerecht zu werden, will Cameron außerdem auch mit den Nachfolgern neue technische Maßstäbe setzen. Anlässlich seiner Ernennung zum Ehrenmitglied der Society Of Motion Picture And Television Engineers versprach der Filmemacher, gemeinsam mit dem „Weta Digital“-Studio ein neues Zeitalter des 3D-Films einzuläuten.

Entsprechend langwierig sind natürlich die Dreharbeiten und Postproduktion des Films. Die Produktion musste auch aufgrund der Corona-Pandemie unterbrochen werden. Nach einer zweiwöchigen Quarantäne konnten die Arbeiten im Juni 2020 wiederaufgenommen und Ende September abgeschlossen werden. Zudem habe man auch beim dritten Film maßgebliche Produktionsfortschritte erreichen können. Zwischendurch hielt Produzent Jon Landau seine Fans auch via Instagram die Fans mit frischen Material vom Set bei Laune.

„Avatar 2“ hat bereits einen holprigen Weg hinter sich und musste mehrfach verschoben werden. Dem deutschen Kinostart am 14. Dezember 2023 sollte nichts im Wege stehen. Das Publikum wird im Kinosessel dann die Qual der Wahl haben: Ganz gleich ob 3D, 4K, High Frame Rate (HFR) mit 25 Bilder pro Sekunde oder IMAX-Auflösung und verschiedenen Sound-Einstellungen. „Avatar 2“ soll in so vielen verschiedenen Versionen im Kino erscheinen, wie kein Film zuvor.

James Cameron is a filmmaker who thinks big and thinks of himself.

If every successive Cameron film was about finding new ways to push the boundaries of film technology — not to mention budgets and the patience of its film studio overseers — then they were also about making the best films of their own Director's to reference, revise and rescale ideas.

The watery aliens of The Abyss fathered the liquid metal T-1000 of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, as did the destruction of vital city infrastructure in True Lies, the capsizing of an ocean liner in Titanic, and the marines' exoskeleton armor in Aliens fathered the machines real steel that power Avatar's less heroic soldiers. When Cameron picks up a camera, he also picks up pieces of his own gigantic ambitions, stacking them on top of each other until he reaches a limit only he is aware of, stopping only just before his cumulative effort topples over and destroys him and maybe too his audience. This makes Avatar: The Way of Water the ultimate James Cameron experience. It's got aliens, armies, robot suits, sinking ships, and enough water to drown the entire film industry three times over. If the director had to spend 13 years of his life producing this unlikely sequel, it was time (and money; so much money) well spent. The Way of Water is the kind of hugely entertaining, spectacularly ambitious, no-nonsense epic that only James Cameron can and should make.

If it's been, say, more than a decade since you last saw the first Avatar, don't worry darling: the first 10 minutes of the sequel sums up the big events of its predecessor, if not the specifics the action. How did human soldier Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) become a 10-foot-tall blue alien again? Does it matter what happened to his human body? Wait, what about Sigourney Weaver's scientist character, Dr. Grace Augustine happens in the first movie and why/how is her Na'vi avatar mysteriously pregnant? Did this happen in the first movie and I forgot? Um, let's just fast-forward to the basic storyline, which in typical Cameron fashion is pretty straightforward.

After the Earthlings/"Skymen" left the planet Pandora following the events of the first film - expelled by the indigenous Na'vi as punishment for colonizing their land in search of something called "Unobtanium," a word thankfully not pronounced will be in the sequel - all seems peaceful for Jake and his warrior companion Neytiri (Zoe Salanda). After settling in the woods of Pandora, the two start a half-alien/half-human family that includes wild sons Neteyam (Jamie Flatters) and Aonung (Filip Geljo), curious little daughter Tuk (Trinity Jo-Li Bliss ) belong ) and the teenage girl Kiri (Weaver again, but digitally aged) who the clan adopted after emerging from the dead (?) avatar corpse of Dr. Augustine was born. Yes. just join us, okay?

The Annecy cool-news train keeps a-rollin', while I'm still reeling in from the delight that is ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE.

Speaking of SPIDER-VERSE, more on Sony Animation's 2D animated Genndy Tartakovsky adult comedy FIXED was unleashed, though still no release date or how it'll be released - despite strong implication that it's bound for... The big screen! It's going to be completed in September, too. Right around the corner. I wouldn't be surprised if this dog takes BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE's 3/29/2024 release date, giving the crew the time they need to perfect the closer to this multiverse-spanning spider trilogy.

We got some of the major cast (such as Adam Devine, Idris Elba, and Olivia "Liv" Octavius herself, Kathryn Hahn), and Tartakovsky continues to describe it as more classic-like, an R-rated LADY AND THE TRAMP and ONE HUNDRED AND ONE DALMATIANS. "A very sweet, charming, sincere story of friendship and romance.” Basically, everything they revealed and everything they've been saying make this sound like a winner. Plus it's Tartakovsky, you can't go wrong. We get this - and possibly his action movie BLACK KNIGHT later on down the line - instead of his POPEYE... It's been hinted that some legendary animators have been brought to this project, too. Ones that the crew didn't think they'd get... Intriguing...

Also, it could be the first major-release theatrical 2D animated movie that isn't based on a beloved property or a sequel since... THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG? Because since then... It's been films like WINNIE THE POOH, TV series-based fare like SPONGE OUT OF WATER (mixed media) and MY LITTLE PONY: THE MOVIE. KLAUS was a Netflix film, though it did have a few screenings in theaters.

If it goes to theaters, and does pretty well relative to the budget (I'd imagine this didn't cost more than, say, $30m to make?)... Well, I don't know if it'd move the needle on more 2D films being made, let alone more adult 2D films being made... But it'd be notable and quite nice for this type of film.

In the world of streaming comes a Netflix-exclusive DreamWorks animated film written by Charlie Kaufman, of all people! (He did do uncredited rewrites on KUNG FU PANDA 2, to be fair, one of my all-time favorites.) Directed by Sean Charmatz, in his feature directorial debut, ORION AND THE DARK (based on the book of the same name) sounds like - seemingly - a whole-hog meditation on fear and the dark and the beauty the night can be... Wait why is this a streaming movie, then? I get that it's being produced up at Mikros, like the studio's CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS was, but I feel it should be a theatrical release. Sounds every bit as worthy of big screens as RUBY GILLMAN is. Either way, it's interesting to see DreamWorks having two theatrical titles a year (a sequel and a non-sequel), and also beefing up the slate with smaller, quirkier Netflix pictures. As expected, the look of the film is stylized and cartoony.

The teaser for Pixar's ELIO is finally here, from COCO co-director Adrian Molina. Just in time for ELEMENTAL's release. It looks like the colorful and fun-looking space adventure that was promised at this past D23, with neat environment and creature design, and alien humor to spare. I'm here for more space adventure animated movies. There's something rather amusing about this trailer debuting when virtually everything else on Disney's whole slate of live-action/VFX-heavy pictures got shuffled... Like almost aggressively so. AVATAR 5 pushed all the way back to 2031 (what the hell are our lives gonna look like at the end of this year alone??), STAR WARS here, Marvel there... Meanwhile, the animated pictures remain in place... Pixars in March and June, WDASes in November... Quite something.

Elsewhere, Jorge Gutierrez expands on MAYA AND THE THREE and, surprisingly, his THE BOOK OF LIFE... A new story set in the same universe, perhaps a new dynamic way of doing a shared universe that won't feel as complicated and tried-and-true as other ones out there? Good to see him getting to play around with that world of his, in addition to other projects he has lined up, including an adult dog cartoon of his own: I, CHIHUAHUA!

THE SPIDER WITHIN also sounds great: Horror and an abstract portrayal of anxiety attacks by way of the SPIDER-VERSE series, and one that I - an anxiety-sufferer - am game to check out. I'm guessing they'll put this on the Blu-ray/4K set of ACROSS... I mean I hope. That they didn't say where it'll be released colors me skeptical.

New WDAS short ONCE UPON A TIME UPON A STUDIO could either be a fun tribute to the studio's 100-year legacy, or just a cynical self-congratulatory cameo stew. I like that they're using hand-drawn for this, but there's something kind of... I don't know... Off-putting? About a studio celebrating its legacy in hand-drawn animation while... Actively not pursuing hand-drawn animation for feature films in the foreseeable future... It's only used for maybe shorts and Disney+ projects. I know they keep saying "We're gonna do 2D!" or "The director chooses CG or 2D", but I also know that that's bunk... Until an actual 2D feature is greenlit and is actually in production, then I'll believe it. Also... Making use of previously-unused audio of Robin Williams recorded during production of ALADDIN... Given what hell Disney put Williams through with that film, and since it's been almost a decade since Williams' death... I'm also a bit struck by that. I like the premise of this short fine, and it's cool to see characters spanning over 60 films and a plethora of shorts, but... given how Disney can be a little excessive in their self-congratulations and such, on their centennial year? We'll see. What I want to hear about is what WDAS is releasing Thanksgiving 2024... That's where my mind's at.

My spoiler free review of Avatar 2.

I finally caught Avatar The Way of Water, after waiting patiently 13 years and after having to cancel my tickets on opening day with my dad, because I tested positive for COVID. Went through 5 days of quarantine and had a negative test, and headed off to the east coast for Xmas, where I was planning to watch it with some friends and family. But bad weather thwarted my trip, so while in travel limbo, had to catch a showing.

After seeing in IMAX 3D, my mind was thoroughly blown! This sequel was stunning on so many levels, and I wasn’t disappointed. I did however notice some things that were frustrating. The high frame rate in IMAX was excellent, but transition from HFR action scenes back to 24 fps dialogue was a bit jarring. At times it felt like the movie was streaming from online and had to buffer during certain scenes after the HFR action. I wish they offered a full high frame rate version with no interruptions in its 48fps glory.

Another thing that frustrated me, I felt like there was a bit of rehash from the first Avatar, kind of like Force Awakens tried to reformulate Episode IV. But on some level, it was a step above 2009! ✨👏🏽✨ And definitely a better sequel than Star Wars VII was to Return of the Jedi.

The creativity and mind blowing effects made up for what was lost in trying to repeat a formulaic success. It was emotionally moving on a level that was even more potent than the first, with family relationships taking center stage. Simultaneously, the story could not help but remind me of what’s at stake in our own oceans, while setting up another stunning allegorical retelling of a story most of us are not proud of; the betrayal and destruction of indigenous peoples and their lands. Pandora was North and South America before the Europeans moved in and claimed the new world as their own.

This is the quintessential premise of Avatar and Cameron’s message; unless we have a change of heart, with the Na’vi representing our higher selves, we will continue destroying our oceans and planet. And the only thing preventing us from doing it again to an alien world, is our lack of current know how to sail the deep seas of space, with enough weapons, manpower and technology to colonize a new paradise.

This is why Avatar and its sequel are such powerful films; they get us thinking about our own world, and the beautiful dream it could become if our higher selves prevail. Imagine if we all just went “Na’vi” on our current intolerable order, that’s causing the destructive free fall / tail spin we are currently experiencing with a climate catastrophe. What if we woke up and decided we didn’t want to play the self destructive end game nations are preparing to wage (WW3) when refusing to act like states in a global country. What if the enlightened side of us all won the race for our future, where like the Na’vi, we decided we are all one tribe on this beautiful world, all truly seeing each other, respecting all beings and the environment, living in balance and collectively uniting to defeat militarism, fascism and corporate greed destroying any chance of a livable future.

24 hours after seeing Avatar 2, I tested positive for COVID again, this bout hitting me much harder than the first. And again it makes me think about the environmental challenges we face that have been proven to exacerbate the global pandemic, while promising to unleash even newer and more deadly viruses. The Avatar franchise has come to us all at the prefect time, and I can’t wait to see how Avatar 3 wakes US up even more, while inspiring a much needed shift in our collective consciousness!

Heureuses et émouvantes, ces retrouvailles pourraient toutefois rapidement tourner au drame, dans un de ces revirements de situation dont la saga a le secret. Uta fait-elle encore partie de l’équipage de Shanks ? Comment est-elle devenue chanteuse ? Où était-elle pendant toutes ces années ?

Tous les ingrédients qui ont fait le succès du manga réunis

Dans ce nouvel opus réalisé par Gorō Taniguchi, tous les héros emblématiques de la série sont présents : l’équipage de Luffy mais aussi leurs plus grands adversaires comme Big Mom, une puissante pirate qui fait la taille d’un géant, et ses enfants, Oven et Brûlée. À plusieurs reprises, parfois seulement quelques secondes, des personnages iconiques rencontrés par notre équipe de combattants au cours de son aventure dans la version papier apparaissent à l’écran. De quoi satisfaire les lecteurs assidus du manga.

L’animation des dessins est proche de celle des épisodes de la série. Les images sont colorées dans des tons pastels, apportant à l'ensemble une bonne dose de "kawaï" (esthétique qui évoque l’univers de l’enfance et de la mignonnerie). Le film s'inscrit complètement dans la galaxie du manga One Piece (on retrouve les protagonistes, certains lieux…) mais le scénario est exclusif et n'est pas relié à la trame principale de la série. Nos héros se retrouvent ici dans un cadre plus léger et festif. Déjà dans la précédente adaptation, One Piece : Stampede, l’équipage s’était rendu à un grand rassemblement de pirates du monde entier pour faire la fête. Red : One Piece est une nouvelle fois une occasion de découvrir les personnages sous un autre angle, plus décontracté.

Au centre de ce nouveau long-métrage, un personnage : Uta. Les cheveux bicolores, rouges et blancs, les yeux violets, elle est particulièrement charismatique. Elle le devient d’autant plus quand on apprend qu’elle est la fille d'un des plus grands pirates de la saga, Shanks Le Roux. Sur les oreilles, son casque jaune et futuriste nous renseigne immédiatement sur sa spécialité : la musique. Son concert, pop et explosif, ouvre le film et fait penser à ceux de la chanteuse virtuelle très populaire au Japon, Hatsune Miku.

Enfin, si le film rassemble tous les éléments qui ont fait le succès du manga, notamment un savant mélange d'humour et de drame, il prend aussi les traits d’une comédie musicale grâce à cette protagoniste. Une vraie nouveauté. La chanteuse Uta donne du rythme avec ses chansons entraînantes dont New Genesis (interprétée avec puissance par la Japonaise Ado) qui nous enchante dès les premières minutes du film. Dans la version française, le public retrouvera la voix rauque d’Hoshi pour ce morceau.

Sans apporter de réelles nouveautés par rapport aux précédents films, ce nouvel opus ne manque toutefois pas d'énergie et offre quelques belles scènes musicales. C'est précisemment cet aspect qui fait sa force, le rendant accessible aussi bien aux enfants qu'aux adultes, lecteur fidèles, ou non, de la saga.

Enfermée sur sa nouvelle île déserte, elle n’a pas d’autre activité que de chanter en visio pour donner du baume au cœur aux populations du monde les plus pauvres qui se sentent abandonnées du gouvernement et à la merci des pirates. Jusqu’au jour où elle organise un festival, avec un public de fans venus du monde entier, rêvant d’un monde sans pirates. Mais dans One Piece, la piraterie n’est jamais finie

Uta est la fille cachée de Shank et elle compte bien créer une nouvelle ère grace à son don pour le chant. C'est tout ce qu'on vous dira du scénario du nouveau film One Piece Red. Il y a bien entendu bien plus à découvir sur cette relation et avec Luffy, mais si c'est tout ce que vous savez en allant en salles, vous n'en appréciérez que plus l'histoire. Cette comédie musicale inédite sait profiter de sa force, la musique, mais en oublie un peu ce qu'on attend aussi d'un film animé One Piece : des combats épiques.

Luffy sera toujours Luffy, ce type débonnaire qui n'en a rien à faire des conventions et des apparences. C'est toujours un plaisir de le voir faire ce qui lui chante et mettre les pieds dans le plats. Pour le reste, il y a beaucoup à dire sur One Piece Red sans raconter son scénario. Clairement la Toei et Shueisha veulent remettre Shank au devant de la scène ; avec la fin de l'arc Wano et l'entrée du manga dans ce qui doit être l'arc final, on sait déjà que ce charismatique et populaire personnage va revenir en force. D'après ce qu'on lit dans les premiers chapitres du nouvel arc du manga, on n'est pas non plus étonné que Bartelomeo ait aussi autant de présence dans le film. Cependant One Piece Red reste un film assez indépendant gardant une forme de statu quo post Wano.

En vérité, les thèmes profonds de One Piece Red, mis en lumière par Uta et ses chansons, sont intriguants et intéressants. Qui ne s'est pas un jour demandé ce qu'il advenait des populations et des gens normaux dans l'univers de One Piece pris dans les affrontement entre Pirates, gentils ou méchants, et Marines. Ou entre pirates. Si l'équipage de Luffy ne sème pas le chaos et la mort partout où il va, il se revendique tout de même pirate, et de nombreux pirates n'ont aucun scrupule ; comment et pourquoi le peuple devrait faire la différence ?
