He kisses you on the forehead once more, and carries you down to the kitchen, like a prince to a princess. You giggle as he sets you down, teasing you.

You nod, smiling as you kiss him on the cheek. He wraps his arms around your waist, pulling you in close before he remembers something...

"Ah, I have something I need to show you."

He rushes away and comes back with his hands behind his back. He smiles, and slowly pulls his hands to show you the gift, and your eyes widen at what it is. In his hands, there is a beautiful, black and gold Spidersuit. The suit is beautiful and has your name engraved on the back. You stare at it, tears slowly welling in your eyes, and he gently places it in your hand.

"Whenever you wear this, think of me, okay?"

He smiles and speaks in an even more loving tone.

"You're my hero. Never forget it."

You burst into tears from his words, and he holds you close, as all of your problems fade away. For a moment, it's just you and him, holding each other close...and a warm sensation fills your heart.

Lexicon Entries Beginning with U:

Uke: In Japanese fandom, the uke character is the one who bottoms during sex. See also: seme.

UNF: Abbreviation for “universal noise of fucking.”

UTC: Abbreviation for “under the cut.” On social media platforms such as Livejournal and Tumblr that have “read more” functionality, UTC would mean there’s more information if you click the read more, referring to the dotted separation line as a “cut.”

Usenet: A collection of text-only discussion boards that fans used to communicate in earlier stages of internet development. The original usenet instance is closed, but the same structure exists on other providers today. Read more about Usenet.

UST: Abbreviation for “unresolved sexual tension: Refers to fanworks or source materials that contain perceived or actual sexual tension that is never addressed/satisfied. Less used is the abbreviation RST, “resolved sexual tension.” Read more about UST.

UwU: An emoticon of a cute face, indicating cuteness/fluffiness, often to a point of excess/annoyance. Popular with furries. Can also be used to refer to a cutesy manner of speaking.

Uwuification: The act of making something cutesy. This may be used positively or negatively; when it’s used negatively it’s generally to express frustration that something or someone has been made cute/sweet/innocent in defiance of their perceived “actual” canon characterization. w/a: Abbreviation for “writing as.” An abbreviation used in writing circles when an author uses more than one name to write under and are public about doing so; especially common when an author has transitioned and some books are in an old name or deadname.

WAFF: Abbreviation for “warm and fluffy feelings.”

Wank: Originally slang for jerking off, wank has come to mean nonsense/rubbish in the UK, and from there, in fandom it’s come to mean trolling/drama/discourse that’s seen as pointless nonsense or just a term for such discussions in general. Using wank to apply to discourse generally implies that the person calling it wank considers it, essentially, pointless. Read more about usages of the term “wank” in fandom.

Wattpad: A writing platform used by some fan creators to post their writing, with monetization options and some shady language in their terms of service. Visit Wattpad.

Wayback Machine: Another name for The Internet Archive, a website that allows users to see older, archived versions of websites, including webpages no longer available elsewise/that have been deleted on their original servers. Named after Peabody and Sherman’s machine in The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle. Visit the Wayback Machine.

Webring: A collection of discrete websites that are loosely affiliated with each other by a common purpose or theme, who agree to link to each other so users of one site might easily find the others. A fixture of the old web, when search engines were much less reliable. Joining a webring often involved an application process, and member webpages would include a graphic associated with the webring and link(s) to other member sites, in an order that’d loop (as in, visit next page -> visit next page would eventually take you back to the beginning), hence the name “ring” in the name. Weeaboo: A usually derogatory term for a Western fan who is extremely into Japanese fandoms. Often shortened to “weeb.” Though it’s use was originally always negative, some people have assumed the name by choice and embraced it. Read more about the term “weeaboo.”

White Knighting: A behavior in which someone wants to be a white knight, so “rides to the rescue” of an underdog or oppressed group, and then continue to force their help others no matter how little their supposed benefactor wants the help – and then often getting upset that their help wasn’t more appreciated. Whitelist: A list of entities that are exceptions to a given rule, filter, or objection. Sometimes used to indicate that the entities on the list should be prioritized. Some social media platforms include “whitelisting” functionality; entering a term of the whitelist ensures you’ll see posts that include that term even if they’d otherwise be blocked because of other filters in use. Whitewashing: When depictions of characters are portrayed as whiter than they are in their original iteration. Examples: lighter skin, anglicized names, white actors cast for BIPOC characters, erasure of culture, etc. Read more about whitewashing in fandom.

Whump: A genre in which pain, often gratuitous, is inflicted on a character or characters. Frequently paired with hurt/comfort. Read more about whump.

WIP: Abbreviation for “work in progress.”

WLW: Abbreviation for “women loving women.” A term for romantic/sexual attraction between women. See also: MLM, Sapphic.

Woobie: A woobie is a character one feels sorry for, sometimes with cause, sometimes without. To woobify a character is to take a character and remove everything that might make them morally gray, controversial, problematic, etc, and is similar to uwuification. Often used derisively when an individual feels sorry for a character for reasons that are a) not actually sympathy-provoking and/or b) not based in that character’s canon reality. Some people use woobification to mean imply feminization of canonically male characters or infantilization of characters of any gender. Read more about woobies.

World Heritage Post: 1. A Tumblr post that has achieved some level of consistent fame/infamy, such that references to it have entered common Tumblr vocabulary. 2. A post, regardless of applicability of the first definition, that has been reblogged and tagged by Tumblr user world-heritage-posts. 3. [Thing] Heritage Post is the same, but for [Thing], often a fandom or other popular thing (for example, there’s a blog that reblogs “boob heritage posts.”)

I just read this fic that I really liked and I want MORE. I'm not sure what aspect of the fic was my favorite, but one prominent feature was non-sexual intimacy. The Temeraire fic is the one driving me crazy with longing for more. The others also focus on non-sexual realtionships (aka Friendship).

**WHEEZING LAUGHTER**

I began reading fanfiction in late highschool, in the grand ol' year of Y2K. Fanfiction.net was only a few years old, and MediaMiner.org was a baby, and BOTH were unknown to me.

Angelfire and Geocities reigned supreme, and others purchased their own domain name. Livejournal and Dreamjournal were the interactive media for your audience. Archive Of Our Own wasn't even a twinkle in the eye.

Tags were NON-EXISTENT.

You might, MIGHT get an author's note saying that there was a character death, but those were rare. The best you could hope for was a rating, but NOT with the MPAA letters that getsl used for American movies, because there was a copyright stink over that. (See the following paragraph.) You'd get WAFF, "warm and fuzzy feeling", TAFF, "tangy/ tart and fuzzy feeling" (things get a bit sexual, or a bit angsty, therefore"tart"), and you'd have your lime/ lemon qualifiers. Softcore vs Hardcore pornfics.

(You were 100% going to get the prerequisite "DISCLAIMER! AUTHOR DOES NOT OWN THE RIGHTS TO THESE CHARACTERS!" at the beginning of every chapter. Because it wasn't unheard of for stories you'd been reading to be suddenly pulled off the website it was hosted on without even the AUTHOR knowing, because the site was afraid of copyright violation. GODDAMN ANNE RICE, but also posted song lyrics, book quotes, and using the rating system of the Motion Picture Association of America. Authors losing months, YEARS of posted writing, with NO saved copy on their hard drive, and hoping that a reader had saved a text copy to read offline. This is why WE LOVE AO3, for keeping crap like this from happening.)

Essentially, in the wild wild west of early online fanfiction, it followed the very similar pattern of the fanfiction printed in fanzines passed around fandom conventions: you got what you got and were happy you GOT it. Your favorite characters! Written by a fan like you! Interacting in ways that were canon and WEREN'T! Damn the consequences, read ahead!

Your feels were going to be FELT: the good, bad, and the ugly. And yeah, that ugly could be a VERY unexpected thing, and quite ugly to you. As someone who was raised in a conservative, religious household, there were MANY things that shocked me. But I was a determined little pervert 😅

The tagging system we have now is a beautiful structure, especially for those protecting their mental health.

But in a way, I feel like, as a fandom culture whole, we've become VERY spoiled with what we have. It is incredibly convenient to be able to use the tags to search for exactly what I want, instead of having to read whatever is right there. And it's very much a necessity now with how MUCH is available.

But it kinda feels like cheating when a fandom newbie can just grab whatever. Like you growing up playing video games that you had to BE GOOD at, and now new players can just mod the hell out of their characters and be on their way. No slogging through the trenches like the old-timers.

But yeah, tags. If you use them, READ them, otherwise be prepared for an old fashioned "read and find out."

Feature Friday: Authors Edition

This week we are featuring one of our very own, @sassenachwaffles! 

Ok, I am doing myself because work has been kicking my arse this week and I barely had time to sit and get this done myself! 

I am better known as Waffs around these parts. I have read the books and been a fan for about 5 years. Though, I have lurked the fandom since season 1, I have been active for about a year. I have been writing fanfic, for oh laird, about 7 years now. I have only been writing Outlander fanfiction for about a year. 

My favorite character to write, and as cliche as it is, is Claire. I relate to her in many ways: her stubbornness, saying things at an inappropriate time, and much more. It’s easy for me to channel her and to get thoughts out that make sense. My least favorite character to write is Roger. While I adore his character, I just find him hard to channel.

Some of my favorite pieces I have written are the recent"What's in a name?", it challenged me to push some of my boundaries and I was very pleased with how it turned out. In fact, I love most of my missing moments series. I also have a soft spot forTime After Time- it's the most original work I've ever done and is actually challenging to get down on paper.

I find inspiration from a song or quote more often times than not, or a trope that leaves me itching for more. A good deal of the time it’s a small missing moment that was left in the original canon and I wish we had seen, which makes me feel the need to write it so we do end up getting the scene.

My writing habits are almost nada, I write when I can and where I can. 

My advice for new writers is to: Plan, outlining can be your friend, and if you're comfortable us a beta- it's an eye opening experience and they are there to help. If it's not coming, don't force it. Close it and come back to it when you can.

My favorite fanfic trope: There is one bed left at the inn WILL THEY SHARE?!

Favorite book? Oh dear laird. I think when it boils down to it, I love A Breath of Snow and Ashes, from beginning to end. I love how they are established on the Ridge. They have their daughter and grandson, and just *sae* many goodies! Though, I do harbor soft spots for Voyager and Written in My Own Heart’s Blood as well.

@missclairebelle: I hate emotions. I hate feeling things. I hate letting people down and disappointment. It’s a really bad habit of mine, I don’t process emotions well at all. I really just have this weird thing where I don’t like to *feel* things, I find myself numb to a lot. She makes me feel things with her words and emotions. It’s a small reminder to me, it’s *ok* to feel. 

@notevenjokingfic: If you know me, I have a weird thing for cop dramas. I’m basically a slut for a bearded man carrying a weapon on primetime TV. I also love and adore thigh/shoulder holsters on these fictional characters. I love that she gave me Jamie as a cop. Plus, it’s fun to think of Jamie wearing tactical gear and wearing a thigh holster. *Blushing* 

@thefraserwitch: I’ve seen your outlines. I’ve seen your chapters when you’ve still had a bit to flesh out. I’ve waited for your chapters for days when I wanted them now. You put SO much into your work, and it shows when you press the post button. (I need TADA’s next arc, please.)

I went looking for sources to corroborate spook-as-a-slur, since I've literally never heard 'spook' as anything other than in the Halloween-y sense (not even in the 'spy' sense either), and NPR backs OP up--this article talks about how 'spook,' from Dutch, got used as an innocuous word in the sense of surprise and mild fear, the usual ghostly meaning, but during WW2 'Spookwaffe' started to be used to describe black Army pilots training at the Tuskegee Institute (waffe being the German word for gun), and 'spook' became linked to blackness and soon became a slur. It was also revived in the 1970s by a novel and film called The Spook Who Sat by the Door, a satirical piece by an African American author telling the story of the first black man recruited by the CIA, with 'spook' referring both to 'black man' and 'spy.'

However, I'm not sure about its usage today specifically as a slur, and I'd like to know the thoughts of especially Black people in the phandom on this.

Not to be a Debbie downer but I want to address something that’s been bothering me for a long time. The word “spook” gets thrown around a lot in this fandom- it even gets said in the show a few times, iirc. On one hand, that seems reasonable. The word is apparently derived from the Dutch word for apparitions or specters. It’s a show about ghosts. It makes sense that we use a synonym for ‘ghost’ a lot. That being said…. It’s also a racial slur, especially/specifically when it’s used as a noun. Hopefully I don’t need to tell anyone why using racial slurs is bad, right? Let’s try to avoid doing that in the future.

(I think this only applies to “spook” by itself- based on what I’ve read, adding a y to make “spooky” is okay.)

The search for Rayman's origins was losing steam. Not hope...but things kept...getting in the way, fun was had, the objective had found itself put off.

Rayman and Ly had found themselves involved in the baby globoxes bedtime, which often meant the ended up getting read to with a mug full of cocoa.

The lot of them ended up sleeping together for the physical and emotional warmth at night.

Vicky White, assistant director of corrections for the Lauderdale Sheriff's Department, picked up Casey Cole White, 38, from a detention center on Friday morning at 9:30am, armed with a 9mm handgun.

The corrections officer said she was due to take Casey White - who is not related to her - to a mental health evaluation.

But on Friday afternoon, Sheriff Rick Singleton of Lauderdale County said that there was no scheduled mental health evaluation.

Vicky White's car was found abandoned at a shopping center at 3:30pm, and the pair have not been seen since.

'I am extremely, extremely concerned that he is not in custody,' said Chris Connolly, Lauderdale County district attorney - adding that the FBI is assisting with the search, in addition to state and local authorities.

'This is a very dangerous situation.'

It is unclear if White is in any danger, with investigators yet to say whether they think she colluded with White to bust him out of jail, or whether she has fallen victim to an abduction. 

Casey White was facing the death penalty for the October 2015 murder of Connie Ridgeway, 58, in her home in Rogersville, Alabama.

It remains unclear why she was killed.  

People said she was known for her friendliness and willingness to help others, and the community for many years held a vigil every October in her memory.

Casey White was arrested in December 2015, then aged 32, following a crime spree across Tennessee and Alabama.

In one night, he staged a home invasion, two carjackings and multiple shootings that left a dog dead and a woman injured.

The crimes were followed by a chase, where speeds reached more than 100 miles per hour, WHNT reported.

It ended with a stolen car stuck in a field south of Huntsville, and officers - who were evidently well known to him - pleading with him to put down his gun and give himself up.

White got out of the vehicle with a gun and threatened to shoot officers and himself unless he could speak with Limestone Sheriff Mike Blakely.

Body-cam footage shows deputies attempting to get White to surrender by offering him smokeless tobacco and Sun Drop citrus soda while they waited for Blakely to arrive.

Casey White was found guilty of a total of nine charges, including trying to kill his ex-girlfriend and kidnapping her two roommates. Other charges included first degree robbery, first degree burglary, third degree burglary, breaking and entering a vehicle, animal cruelty for shooting a dog and attempting to elude.

He was sentenced in April 2019 to 75 years in prison.

In June 2020, he wrote to Lauderdale County requesting a meeting with the sheriffs office, and confessed to killing Ridgeway - providing a detailed description of the crime scene.

He said he was paid to kill her, although no motive for hiring a hitman has ever been disclosed.

In October 2020, Casey White, aged 37, appeared in court for an arraignment hearing, and requested to stay at the Lauderdale County Jail instead of going back to prison, WAFF reported.

His request was denied, after authorities said they believed that he was plotting to escape the Lauderdale County Jail.

They had found a makeshift knife, stashed in the showers, and suspected White was intending on using it to force someone to let him out.

'We got information yesterday that he had made a shank and he intended to escape today and take a hostage,' said Connolly, Lauderdale County district attorney, during the hearing.

'Our deputies did a great job.

'Found the shank and eliminated that threat this morning so we obviously aren't equipped to house somebody like that for that long term in our jail, so we are happy that the judge ordered him to go back to the department of corrections.'

White, having confessed, then pleaded not guilty, on grounds of insanity.

Every good tale deserves an end and this is mine. Sadly there will be no pictures because I dropped my trusty camera in the cut whilst washing the boat. On Tuesday at 11 precisely, with a heavy heart we turned off the cut and into our new home. We're berthed canal side with splendid views over the marina. The light is magnificent and the facilities second to none. Spacious clean shower block and a launderette that I managed to flood on our first morning but thankfully that won't be happening again because a very very nice man from Newport Pagnell came along yesterday and repaired our ailing washing machine.

I recognise many faces on the marina and everyone was happy to see us but I kind of get the feeling that it might be a tad clicky. I may be wrong, I hope so!

David started back at toil on Thursday and he said it's like he's never been away. I've applied for a couple of jobs, one at a very local hostelry but so far no replies. If I'm honest I'm feeling slightly anxious about starting work so I won't be taking any old crap. I need something that fits around Ben and David and doesn't stress me out. I need to be patient but being an Aries, I don't do patience!

The plan is to save 10k by June and then hit the cut and cruise north. I'm desperate to see my family, it's been 3 long years, the kids are growing up and probably have forgotten who I am. And I miss my siblings and want to be part of their lives again and forever.

This will be my penultimate post, the penny has dropped that I will never be an author and that is surely the biggest disappointment in my stupid life. I've flogged that horse to death.

Im in the middle of fleshing out not one, but TWO FICS which I only started maybe 3 days ago and they're around 5k words each already.

One fic I feel like I've reached my pique, I've outdone myself in terms of tooth rotting fluff. Reading my own scene makes me want to squeal and stuff my own face face into a pillow from the overwhelming squishiness.

I was just going to throw out a little self indulgent fic, some waff, maybe a bit of smut at the end.. But damn, that one scene. This is going to end up as a series because. That was just far too much fun to play with. Im enjoying my new aged up OC lmao

I have found my niche. Angstfluff is fantastic but I think I'm good at the plain old fluff. And smut. Smut is so much fun to write

Already 3 of my major inspirations came from 3 different fics. Someone had a villain with emotion manipulation. Another was just a sentence I ran with. And another was just because I REALLY liked this one author's portrayal of villain all might. I want to play with him.

Unfortunately the All Smite fic might need to be scrapped and done from scratch. I hadnt fleshed out my oc well enough when I started and now they both seem ooc. 😩

But my fluffy one is on a roll. Right now im just writing the snippets im excited to see, im gonna go back and fill in the boring gaps when i run out. 😝 i plotted and wrote for like. 6 hours, man.

The bad part is im horrible at motivating myself so if i do post a fic its gotta be DONE. I dont do chapters. I always psych myself out and never return.

So i guess I'll just have to quietly enjoy my little fluffy oc ship by myself for now...
