Robin Wall Kimmerer narrates the audiobook version of Braiding Sweetgrass, highly recommend that if the book becomes a struggle :) she has the most lovely voice and it’s nice hearing her narrate her stories
aw , thats cool :' ) thank u for suggesting, i always forget about audiobooks because buying/streaming them online and stuff feels weird. like £6 is too much for an audio file thing to me . but ill look for interviews or something, i think especially her talk at the royal botanical gardens which is on youtube !
#asks#i have boycotted amazon for years now but a while ago i tried to use audible and cant believe its a subscription but you have to also#buy audiobooks. thats genuinely bizarre and scammy to me like ? tbh a lot of amazon seems like scams#idk if you can get audiobooks from libraries here. ive never tried

Local libraries getting rid of physical medias such as newspapers, magazines, cds, dvds, and audiobooks is turning experiencing art into a privilege instead of a right but I don't think you guys are ready for that conversation
#the 95 year old lady who takes the city bus from the old folks home three times a week doesn't have spotify or a smartphone or a computer#how is she going to listen to her johnny cash cds#do you know how many kids I attended school with didn't have internet or wifi???#that wasn't even that long ago#they do not have streaming services stop getting rid of dvds and stop not buying new ones#also there are so many people who have a smart phone and the only thing they know how to do is call or text#if they want to keep using audiobooks let them! It's not killing you that they're not using libby#yes libby and hoopla and kanopy are great but the latter two have limited checkouts and the former usually has long waits#its not fair to expect older people and children learn how to use them if they don't want to or can't!#also magazines are basically unreadable online#so many girls will not be able to experience borrowing american girl magazines from the library because the library doesn't have magazines!#also don't even get me started on no newspapers#sorry I don't have the money for a monthly subscription to a newpaper guess I just won't know the news now#this is why everyone is getting fake news from twitter!#"but everyone has spotify and streaming services and audible and wifi and internet and smartphones and ipads and laptops#newsflash! they don't!#getting rid of physical media from libraries is actually very classist and ageist but people don't want to hear that#I love local libraries and think they are an amazing resource in so many ways#and that's why it hurts so much that they would leave such a large portion of their customers high and dry to maybe save a few bucks#rant#tags so long they probably could've been their own post lol

borrowing ebooks/audiobooks I already owned on Kindle/audible from the library as praxis
#badger rants#in college i had an audible subscription bc it was cheaper to spend $15/month on an audiobook than#$65 on a single audiobook bc the cosmere ones are farking spensive#and this was before widespread audiobook online rental

One small thing anyone can do to make their book recommendations more accessible is check really quickly that the book is also available as an audiobook, and make a note of that. It really sucks to be hyped about a book only to find out that it’s going to be difficult or impossible for you to read!
#at this point I try not to get my hopes up about any indie or self published book#because they generally don’t have audiobooks#which… blows tbh#for me it’s difficult but not impossible#it takes an amount of focus energy and time that’s extremely rare for me#and even then I’m going to miss a fair bit of the content#for other people it’s straight up impossible#bonus points if you note that the audiobook is audible exclusive#AKA it’s available only at a ridiculous price or for a subscription#to a horrible company#and it won’t be available at a library#book adventures

That Time Of The Month usually refers to menstruation but for me it's the day(s) my mom decides to tackle the bills in the most passive-aggressively confrontational way and my dad decides to be the most inefficient whiny martyr on earth who acts like we're oppressing him by asking questions about what charges are bc he doesn't tell anyone anything even tho he is not the one doing the bills every month.
#my dad who doesnt know whats in the bank and spends money like hes making more than minimum wage#vs my mom raised by factory workers who scraped by during the great depression and refuses to learn new methods of bill payment#FIGHT! and get me their kid involved every month of my entire life. apparently.#disgruntled octopus#my mom: we cant afford 3 audiobook subscriptions so which one do you use the most and which can you live without#my dad: just kill me and piss on my grave already why dontcha#but also#my dad: idk why your mom says she doesnt ''have control'' over what costs what when she has all the account passwords and can look things up#my mom: you want me to log in??? to websites??? *insert miette monologue here*#meanwhile I'm like fuck y'all it's not that complicated#which is saying something! bc companies do make it complicated! but not THIS complicated!

(Are Sarah J Maas and Colleen Hoover problematic and, on a completely definitely unrelated note do spotify audiobooks profit the author?)
#i can do audiobooks now that theyve been added to a subscription service i already pay for#and ive always wanted to read from those authors but the size of the books is intimidating#a court of thorns and roses is 16 hours long 👁👄👁 that book is gonna be heavy and hard to read

Going on a library ban effective immediately. Once I finish/return the books I currently have borrowed, I'm not getting anymore so help me gd. It is so stressful to me to have this many unread books in my home that I avoid looking at my shelves and therefore only read library books/audiobooks from Libby. Libby is included in ALAB (All Libraries Are Banned).
#disgruntled octopus#the things i often get carried away by are reading challenges etc but a) i have books to fulfill any theme now#and b) the only themed things im doing coming up are nonfiction november and a re-readathon in December#and probably some kind of indigenous readathon if someone organizes one this year#and i have books for all of those#idk how long this ban will last and im allowing myself different versions of books i do own#e.g. if i own a book on audio but want a print version or vice versa#and im gonna let myself use scribd a little bit for audiobooks bc my dad hardly uses his subscription and i want to make it worth the cash#but im not going to add any ebooks to my kindle or plus catalogue books to my dad's audible acct

You don't know how grateful I am when blogs like this actually let us read the stories and don't just post the covers, thank you for that. I don't have a lot of picture books anymore but it still feels good to have any way to read them. I'm not an age regressor, I just come here because some of me mentally is still a child and that part finds these silly and amusing. I also kind of struggle to read (rarely do anymore is why, it's attention span stuff) so it's really nice seeing books that appeal to me that I can read
This sort of message makes me so happy! I'm glad people are enjoying this blog, in whatever capacity that appeals to them, especially if you like the stories themselves (❁´◡`❁) there's so many amazing picture books out there and I want to throw them at people and make everyone love them! (tho rip tumblr's image limit... i can rarely post a full story just a few pages;;;)
I'm not an age regressor either -- actually I didn't even realise that was a community that existed until I created this blog, but I'm under the impression that a few now follow me (hi!) -- I just really enjoy children's literature!
Also, re reading difficulties: I feel you! University kinda destroyed my ability to sit down and read books for a while, and kidlit is actually what helped me rebuild that skill, another reason I have a big soft spot for it (‾◡◝) I seriously encourage popping down to a local library and grabbing picture books or chapter books to read. There's some absolutely stellar children's lit out there, old and new at all levels, with great stories that are short, sweet, and move at a good clip. Great for people that like reading but don't have the attention span for a big novel!
(also no pressure but if you or anyone else happens to have picture books that you love and want to submit pictures of them, I'd love to see them! seeing the soft, worn books from someone else's childhood? seeing what makes other people feel all happy and nostalgic? absolutely the best thing ever)
#sorry about rambling but getting a message like this made my day#(´▽`ʃ♡ƪ) (´▽`ʃ♡ƪ) (´▽`ʃ♡ƪ)#there's never much interaction on this blog so any time i get a reminder that other people are out there loving picture books i get so happ#this blog is very much a labour of love so it's exciting to see other people enjoying it#also just saying#if you are interested in reading kidlit and would like book recs 👀👀👀#or if you just like talking about your favourites#please feel free to message me i LOVE talking about books. i love books. books are the best#book talk#oh also taking this time to shout out the Libby app again#it has kidlit on it!!! picture books - chapter books - audiobooks#assuming your local library has a subscription to it all you need is a library card and way to download the app#you can read great pictures books there!#oh and archive.org as well! that's where i go to find specific picture books that aren't in my library system sometimes!

I’m not like thaaaat close to finishing fallen star but it is getting there so I’m trying to set up midnight horizon so it doesn’t wash me out again and I am STRUGGLING to find an audiobook. It’s not at my current library, not unlocked on Spotify, at my old hometown library network it’s there but has a 2 week wait time, and it’s $5 more than the others on apple for some reason??? Argh why
Also: I was momentarily gratified because it’s average rating was a full star less than all the others in the series but then I saw the low comments are all ‘why does this have to be WOKE’ no not like THAT goddammit
#the dialogue is cringey and also ok yeah I didn’t like the relationship focus either#but not because it’s ‘woke’ rather when you’re REELING from fallen star and then the next installment is like#‘how bout we spend most of the time talking about THREE ✨forbidden romances✨#and you’re like UM WHAT ABOUT THE NIHIL. WHAT ABOUT TGE SCARY FORCE EATING MONSTERS#HELLO????#star wars#the high republic#and also yes I know about Libro.fm it’s just I’m not sure I want to commit to a subscription#audiobooks are still new for me and this might just be a high republic thing haha idk if I actually *like* audiobooks yet
