Giro d'Italia Women 2024 - Stage 2

After an ITT for Stage 1, the second stage of the Giro d'iTalia Women was a presumptive sprint stage with a mostly flat course, but a two-woman breakaway kept it interesting! Ana Vitória Magalhães (BePink-Bongioanni) and Alessia Missiaggia (Top Girls Fassa Bortolo) launched early in the stage and stayed away for most of the day.

After Magalhães dropped Missiaggia on the first climb of the final circuit, it was just her against the bunch, which eventually had to really work to bring her back. First SD Worx-Protime rode, eventually with some help from Lidl-Trek, and Magalhães was finally caught inside the last 2km. Even then, the excitement didn't stop, as Anouska Koster (Uno-X Mobility) took a flyer off the front and wasn't caught until the 500m mark. In the end, the stage came down to the expected spring finish, and it came down to a bike throw.

Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime), Elisa Balsamo (Lidl-Trek), and Arlenis Sierra (Movistar) all contested, but Chiara Consonni (UA Team ADQ) out-threw Kopecky at the line and took the stage. And boy, she was pretty excited about it!

No change in the general classification, as Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) finished in the front group and keeps the maglia rossa another day. And Magalhães came away with the mountains classification jersey for her efforts on the day, a nice prize for the young Brazilian who put in a really impressive effort. We'll be keeping an eye on her.

And let's just give some appreciation to these gorgeous stages, the Giro is a visual treat. The riders rode out of Sirmione along the harbor and Lago di Garda, which was just too pretty on a beautiful weather day. Che belleza!

Stage 1 of Itzulia Women came down to a bunch sprint in a technical finish with an uphill drag, and Mischa Bredewold (SD Worx-Protime) came out on top. It's Bredewold's first victory while wearing the European Champion's jersey.

Arlenis Sierra (Movistar) was second, and Bredewold's teammate (and GC favorite) Demi Vollering came in a comfortable third, as she looked around the group to gauge her position. Vollering should be in very good position as the race takes on bigger climbs tomorrow.
