Advantages You Can Get From Document Automation Software
Document automation is an effective process that uses a firm's legal documentation, for example: agreements, contracts, licenses, estate planning, leases, and many more to be used to form the latest legal documents. Document automation software offers numerous advantages to businesses or enterprises. Those advantages are as follows: Improved efficiency: Without document automation software, professionals would have to sit for days and go through all the legalities to form new contracts and agreements. But after the introduction of this software, professionals could form new contracts as soon as possible without any errors. Cost-effective: Without automation systems, lawyers and legal professionals had to work for days to form documents, which could increase the cost for companies. But automation systems have lowered expenses associated with these tasks for companies. Hence, it is a cost-effective solution for businesses. Lesser chances of errors: If legalities are done manually, there are chances that professionals might miss some points or add something unwanted. But all these mistakes can be eliminated with the help of document automation software. They can make sure to verify every single content of the document with others. Hence, you do not have to worry about errors when things are handled by software. End-user experience: Generally, contracts and agreements were sent to the end-user through several middlemen. It could be a time-consuming process. But with the help of document automation software, the end-user can get the contracts and agreements as soon as possible. Also, they can easily get access to the document. Controlled versions: Almost every professional has faced a situation where they forwarded a legal document to different teams, and when the document returns, it brings different versions too. So, with the help of automation software, you can control the formation of different versions and make changes to the same document. If you also need such software for your business that can improve efficiency, you can contact PaperTrail. #vanlife - not just a hastag
Hi there,
I am EarthQuackSugarSkull and I am a Filmmaker born and bred in London, currently residing in the north of England and loving it. just luvvinit. I moved to South Africa when I was 18 with my mum, to explore the world, travel, grow and ended up studying my BA in filmmaking in Durban. After I completed my course I moved to The North and now... here I am.
So here is my life at the moment: I am a part-time Postgraduate Filmmaking student, meaning I have school and lectures one day a week, though the majority of my course is ‘self-motivated’...ugh... which translates to: Do it yourself. Good luck. SO I am currently working on 2 films, one which is on pause to make way for the other one, which I am making progress with and hope to screen it at an exhibition at the end of June 2018. I try to leave 2-3 days a week (including school) to dedicate completely to working on the film. I also work 4-5 shifts a week at a pub, most of which are night shifts.... which makes waking up early... challenging, especially after working several nights in a row... after the 4th night I do nothing but sleep the next day...I work to make money for the film - the props, paying actors and crew, any location payments, travel expenses and festival entries. While I have managed to scrounge a little extra here and there, the film’s main budget comes from my work at the pub. I enjoy the job, don't get me wrong, but it isn't what I want to be doing. the late nights, constantly being ill from picking up snotty tissues, smelling like an alcoholic, walking home alone at night... there are many things I dislike about the job which... at this point in my life and after 6 years in the industry, I am ready to move away from.
I consider my other skills: videography, photography, sound mixing, editing and other filmy stuff and apply for those jobs in my area. I find a couple but most of them are for a month or two at the most, and are paid in exposure bucks which are all very cute but don't pay the bills... furthermore the majority of work that I can get at my level are in London, for sporadic amounts of time at sporadic times and are also paid in exposure bucks or not enough to cover travel expenses and staying somewhere etc... so I consider: what about a regular job, an office job? tried it. hated it. furthermore, because of the film all of my spare money is going into the film and I certainly canNOT afford to survive the dreaded first month of a new job whatever it may be... so I find myself in a predicament.
I am writing this rather long-winded post because I just wanted to get this out. I have always been in love the classic VW surfer duuuuuude camper van, in particular the red ones.... luvvem. just... luvvem. And now all these damn beautiful millennial vegan yuppies are all up in them...GADDAMN IT MAKES ME MAD. but you know, I'm completely one of them - except the vegan part... but I LIKED THEM BEFORE THEY WERE COOL OK???!
Anyway - I've always thought it would be cool to put a mattress in the back and go on little road trips in it. Not until a couple of years ago, once admittedly I had come across the #vanlife movement, did I consider moving into one full-time. And now... I. am. obsessed.
Here is why #vanlife ISN’T bullshit. for me.
Please note: if there is anything I have learned from hundreds, I say HUNDREDS of hours I have spent researching vans, interiors, batteries, types of insulation, watching videos, vlogs, reading articles, blogs and so on... it is this: van life and the reasons for or against it are entirely INDIVIDUAL to the person undertaking this lifestyle. It is also important to note that van life isn't just a hashtag, it is an entire lifestyle. and it is not simply moving your apartment into a van, it is an entire change of life style. We are talking about going from stationary to nomadic homie... omg I can't wait!
I know what you’re thinking: damn millennial yuppy, living in a van is weird! well... stop right there, JUDGE JUDY! I hate yoga, I love meat, I eat pizza on the REG, I spend waaaaaay too much time on the couch, I’m slightly overweight but I make it WERK because SELF LOVE henny. I am pretty normal. though undiagnosed, I definitely suffer from depression, anxiety (you know, the usjj...), low-self esteem and all that LOVELY STUFF. But you know what? I’ve decided I don't give a shit. I’m doing it! I am buying a crappy van, empty. I am going to throw a mattress, a bucket, a storage container and a cooler in the back and FUCK THE FUCK OFF. And I can't bloody wait. But first... let me overthink this through....
PROS
I am doing this because it will help me career-wise because I’ll be able to travel TO where the work is and it will be fine if the work is sporadic because I'll be LIVING IN A VAN - a house on wheels WITH storage space?!?! perfect for being on a film set! I don't need to factor in commuting time especially when shooting runs late or starts early, I can just sleep in the parking area... easy!
I can visit my friends and family more (they live eVERYWHERE - this makes it very expensive and time-consuming to visit them because it takes hours in the coach or train, and I can only travel at certain times because they don't run 24/7 and you can travel WHENEVER in a van. I'll also save money on food and coach/train tickets as well as trains and cabs in and around their areas.
I have done plenty of TRAVELLING in my life and I think those experiences and lessons cannot be forgotten or lost, which is why I think this is a brilliant idea. I want to explore my weird little Island, I want to explore Europe (before BREXIT FFS), I want to drive from the North of England aaaaalllll the way down to Cape Town, South Africa because many of my uni friends live there and I NEED TO SEE THEM.
I can save so much MONEY man... seriously - in the long term, and I say after a matter of a few months, I could make back the money I have spent out for the van, and from there we are talking petrol, insurance, food and then expendable income. I can put that money towards equipment, films, festival entries, travel to festivals and other industry events or just savings.
The FREEDOM! I love being able to move about freely! I love having all of my possessions to hand - it makes me feel empowered, independent, strong and those cannot be bought or achieved with a big house, for me anyway..
CONS...
...
comfort? no... insulation, blankets and cushions... ok
Safety? - fair point, sir... I imagine an alarm, a dog and a large knife can take care of that...
there don't seem to be many more...
I’m going to come clean now... at the END of the post ok I KNOW... bear with me ok
I do not have a driving licence.
I know... I KNOW OK?! calmit... I moved to SA when I was 18 and over there it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to apply for a driving test as a foreigner. In the year and a half I was trying to book one, I went back and forth from the driving authority MANY MANY times... each time there was a new document I needed which I didn't need last time...and then when I moved back to England I found out you have to live in England for a certain amount of time before you can book a test, plus I needed a new provisional licence. I have also had many many poor months in the past year, leaving little extra money for lessons and the test itself. I booked my driving test this morning as well as a lesson with an ALRIGHT instructor, but if we’re honest... which we always are - I've been driving for years. I am a safe driver but just need a little practice. so - assuming I pass pay test in June... I should be on the road by July 2018. I should get a larger pay check in June and hopefully the film’s expenses will be mostly complete so I'll have a bit extra to play with... hopefully. if not then I will spend another month or so working and then move in ASAP before winter comes!!!
so... that’s the plan... this PROBABLY won't work BUT I have to hope above hope that it will because honestly. I can't do this any more. I can't do being tied to one location any more. it isolates me from those I love, and me being the lazy poor motherfucker I never have spare income to buy tickets and book trains to go visit my friends and family. I feel constrained. I feel flattened... I feel the weight of all of it on my back and it kills me. I need to do this. this isn't some #vanlife bullshit. fuck all that. fuck all the fluff around it. Life on Wheels is the perfect way to minimise, mobilise and empower oneself. in the world we live in today? it seems like the only option for me, unless I fall into the machine taking a 9-5 and a lease/mortgage. I can't do that. I will literally be HORRIBLE to be around. I will feel FIlTHY and oppressed and that will send me down a mental journey that I have experienced before and simply won't survive again... but that is a post for another day.
Aaaaaaanyway, if you've made it down here - thank you. thank you for listening,  thank you for the shit that you have given me today. Here, have one in return. <<SHIT>>
One love,

IN MEMORY OF MY MOTHER (10.05.1915 – 03.06.1992)
She was a retiring sort of person who preferred to stay at home. Yet she was always interested in people, and nothing pleased her more than being in the company of those she cared about and was interested in. What struck most who knew her was that she was a true listener. Some said this of her: that when you were in her company it was as if you were the only person in the world that mattered.
Tumblr media
Elfrida Mary (Moore) Walker was born on 10 May 1915 in Bloemfontein, and once the nursing home pronounced the baby and her mother fit to leave, they journeyed home by ox wagon, traveling for two full days, outspanning overnight on the banks of the Modder River.
Tumblr media
My mother and I in the mid 70s.
Her parents were British immigrants who had sailed to South Africa only five years earlier. Randal Moore, a sheep farmer and a Scot, had been farming in southern England when he met his wife, Elizabeth Visger (Visscher), daughter of a medical doctor whose father and grandfather were Dutch American immigrants to Britain. My mother was the youngest of five children. Betty, Colin and Helena were British born, but Maurice had been born on their South African farm, Oubrakfontein, three years before my mother’s birth.
Tumblr media
My mother’s parents, Elizabeth nee Visger (Visscher) and Randal Moore.
A farm some miles north of the dorpie Dealesville, about 45 miles west of Bloemfontein on the road to Kimberley, Oubrakfontein is where my mother spent the first ten years of her life. She always spoke of Dealesville and Oubrakfontein, right to the very end – and those names, and the images they conjured up in me, were as familiar to me as were my own life’s names and images.
Her reminiscing always included the pepper tree. It stood towards the rear of the house, and appeared to have functions associated with the kitchen. My mother spoke of various items that would be hung from its inner branches in a makeshift gauze and wooden cooler box, such provisions gaining benefit from the shade and breeze. The rear side of the house, facing south and away from the sun, brought relief to the family, their British constitutions unacclimatized to the hot Highveld summers, and a deep veranda with inelegant recliners often featured in her recollections.
Tumblr media
The family at Oubrakfontein. Betty, the oldest, had already left for boarding school in England.
Indoor life centered around a handsome marble fireplace, and a piano. The house was softened and cheered by treasured furnishings and heirlooms shipped from England. My mother talked of evenings filled with singing, as the family gathered round their cherished piano, my grandmother playing.
In the early years, before my mother’s birth, relatives had visited from England. After their return, in a letter to another relative, there was the remark, “They live too close to the earth. And Betty is acquiring a Colonial accent.” So Betty, having attended St Michaels School in Bloemfontein till then, was sent away to boarding school in England, and Colin to St Andrews in Grahamstown. During Betty’s schooling, World War I broke out, and she did not return for many years. My mother was five years old when she first met her sister.
Tumblr media
An illustration of the farmhouse, done by Betty before she left for boarding school in England.
Education was difficult for the younger three, Dealesville being too far away for daily travel. So a live-in governess was employed. Her name was Miss Paton. Her nephew was to become one of South Africa’s most celebrated authors, Alan Paton, of Cry The Beloved Country fame. My mother told me of their endless efforts to find a way to be outside rather than in Miss Paton’s classes.
She told me about their clambering up the wild olive trees on the ridge, to look across the salt pans that went on to the horizon; about their swimming in the small river pools after rains, where once she nearly drowned; about her horse who’d wait, when she had fallen off, so that she could mount again. She talked about the sheep pens, dry stone walled, where she took refuge after quarrels with her brother; and her sorrow on the day her brother ‘killed’ her doll and she, in lonely grief and ignorance, believed that it was dead, and buried it.
Tumblr media
Maurice, my mother, and Helena, at the wild olive trees along the ridge.
Life was not easy on the farm. Droughts and locust swarms depleted grazing and, although sheep are tough and hardy animals, my grandfather had learnt his trade in the soft and fertile pastures of southern England. The harsh and dry conditions of the western Free State took their toll. Finally it became necessary for my grandmother to live in Dealesville with the children, so that she could supplement their income by dressmaking, and the children could attend the school. In 1925, ten years after my mother’s birth, they concluded a deal to lease out the farm.
After 15 years at Oubrakfontein, they packed up their life on the farm, and left.
*****
Sezela is a small seaside village alongside a sugar mill on the Natal south coast. My grandfather had found employment as a bookkeeper at the mill. There the three youngest children lived with him in a small house, the older children having married and moved on.
Tumblr media
Three sisters, from left to right. My mother, Betty, and Helena.
My grandmother had returned to England for a spell. During her stay an aunt had fallen ill and she remained to nurse her, only returning a year later. An inheritance enabled her to fund my mother’s high school years as a boarder at St. Mary’s, Kloof, near Durban.
I do believe this was a Godsend for my mother. She spoke wearily and with little enthusiasm of her Sezela years. It was a hard thing for an eleven year old girl to lose her mother for a year, while her older sister was preoccupied with the courting of her future husband. Directly after school she trained as a nurse at Durban’s Addington Hospital.
Her nursing years number amongst her happiest times. Her mother’s family produced several in the medical profession. Her grandfather was a doctor as was her great grandfather. Her mother, while not a trained nurse, learnt alongside her own father in his surgery annexed to their home. Betty trained as a nurse on her return to South Africa, and their mother’s brother was a doctor in England. So it was a natural vocation for her to fall into, and she thrived.
Tumblr media
My father, Graeme Walker, at the time my mother met him.
After a spell of nursing at the Harrismith Hospital in the Free State, she moved to the Piet Retief Hospital during which time World War II broke out. This resulted in a move to the Transvaal, to the Middelburg Military Hospital where, in due course, she met my father. After his return from North Africa in 1941, they had a hasty wedding on the Berea in Durban, then both took up military positions, she at the Wynberg Military Hospital in Cape Town, and he at Sonderwater in the Transvaal. They lived apart for the first two years of their marriage.
Tumblr media
My mother, a lieutenant, in military nursing uniform.
My sister, Helen, was born late in the war and at five years old there was a relocation to Bloemfontein.  Once they had bought and moved into a spacious suburban home on the northern outskirts, John and I were born, less than a year and a half apart.
*****
Tumblr media
All five together for the last time, in the mid sixties, a year or so after their mother died. From left to right, Betty, Colin, Helena, Maurice, and my mother, at Helena’s home in Sezela, Natal South Coast.
For me there will always be one real home in my life, and that home was the one I grew up in, and my mother was central to that home, and she remains central to my memory of it. I have hosts of memories of her, too many to begin sharing, during the first two and a half decades of my life while that home was still our family home. Instead I’ll pay three tributes to her:
She had a sense of humour that is memorable. Somewhat subtle, often quirky, always gracious, she never minded at all if she became the object of the joke. And her good heartedness, her consideration, and her kindness would never permit offense to others.
She loved foot tapping music. It was in her blood. Her mother and her sister, Betty, were classical pianists. But my mother was a syncopation player. Both her brothers played in a dance band, one the guitar and banjo, the other the concertina and, during the breaks, my mother would fill in on the piano. Her sister, Helena, was known for her ear for vocal harmony, and would simply take up the harmony line on anything. So we grew up with music in our ears. We all took lessons, and someone was always at the piano, practising. But when my mother went to the piano, and lifted the lid, and sat down, there was a particularly good feeling in the house; and invariably it would start with her old favourite: Happy days are here again.
Tumblr media
My parents on a day out in the Free State countryside.
Over the years, long after giving up nursing as a career, she used her skills to alleviate family suffering: she nursed her father until he died, then her mother some years later, and then her sister, Betty, enabling them to live in dignity at home until the end. During my father’s several serious illnesses, she was always there with that same untiring commitment – to nurse and to alleviate suffering. It was one of those extraordinary blessings we had as a family. I have never felt in safer hands as I felt in my mother’s care when I was sick.
*****
The last eight years of my mother’s life were in Maritzburg. She had been suffering from several conditions and her health was declining, but the move enabled Helen and me to see both her and my father more regularly. Family gatherings with my brother down from Joburg were not infrequent, and my sister was a stalwart in her final years.
In the winter of 1991 my father was struck by a speeding car outside their flat and suffered serious injuries, but he made sufficient progress in his recovery to enable them together, towards the end of that year, to enjoy their 50th wedding anniversary, in the company of a large crowd of relatives on both sides of the family.
Tumblr media
During her final years in Maritzburg. From left to right, my sister Helen with daughter Liz, Helena with son Elliott, my mother and me (front).
Just less than seven months later, very early one morning in mid winter, my mother left us.
*****
My father lived another three years after she had gone.
Betty lived for many years in Northern Rhodesia (Zambia). Colin lived for many years in Kenya. Both returned late in life. Maurice always lived in Durban. Helena married in Sezela and never left the Natal south coast, and was the last of them to die. Not one of them ever left Africa.
*****
In the fourth year after the passing of my mother I had a serendipitous opportunity to visit Oubrakfontein for the first time. I booked a night in the Olien Hotel in Dealesville, where my mother and other family members had stayed over 60 years before, having traveled there for the purpose of concluding the final sale of the farm, ten years after they had left.
It was a blustery afternoon in early summer, a dry forlorn wind blowing from the west. Thin grey clouds moved in steady trails across the sky, the dry veld grass hunched and knotted, the distant windmills chopping endlessly.
Tumblr media
I stood in the yard of the farm. Assaulted with insensitive outer renovations, the house stood sad and squat, its character quite changed. I went inside and found the living room. I had a sense I knew it from my mother’s words. Abandoned for many years, almost derelict in parts, I sensed it held an element of its former character. I ran my finger along the mantelpiece above the fireplace and, from beneath the dust, the marble came up smooth, unharmed. I stood a while. It was there the piano had stood. In my mind I heard the tinkle of soft notes, the chorus of young voices. The walls were thick, uneven. I stood beside the doorway to the back, the sides worn from countless shoulders brushing past, and I could almost hear their voices, sense their ghosts, returned.
Outside, I wandered to the pepper tree, gnarled and ancient, its inner branches reaching out, resigned and empty. I walked to the ridge where the olive trees grew, and saw the salt pans that went on to the horizon. I found the sheep pens, veld grass long established where the sheep had stood, their dry stone walls still standing nearly eighty years after my mother touched them. And I touched them too. And there I sensed the comfort of the sheep, the softness of their wool, the warmth, the scent of lanolin.
Tumblr media
A bleak and windswept day, not without a touch of sadness, and yet I felt a profound connection to the place. An empathy of coming home. A sacred reverence and respect for souls long gone, yet remaining, forever rooted in this place.
Perhaps my last thought on that day, a thought that lingers still, was this: where in this lonely place, left so long abandoned and forgotten, lies a perished broken doll, forever in its shallow grave.

There's a wonderful monochrome image of a BOAC de Havilland Comet 4 over Sydney Harbour. The harbour bridge is prominent, but look closely and you'll see there's no Opera House. That's because the photo was taken 60 years ago and the first British jet flew into Sydney's Mascot in 1959 before construction began on the Opera House. That flight slashed the journey time from London to Sydney from 47 hours to 36.
Four years earlier, the British Overseas Airways Corporation, one of the many forerunners of British Airways, had introduced a "tourist class" service on its Lockheed Constellation between Britain and Australia, introducing less wealthy travellers to airline travel.
Apart from Qantas, no international airline has had such a long-standing relationship between Australia and Europe as British Airways. So, as the airline celebrates its "centenary", let's mark some of the key moments in its evolution and its place in Australian travel, with much thanks to BA's official historian.
Tumblr media
One of the flying boats that pioneered the post World War II route from Southampton to Rose Bay, Sydney.
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
British Airways didn't exist until 1936 and for most of the 20th century Britain's national carrier flew under a succession of other names, most notably BOAC and British European Airways. Yet the airline dates its birthday back to August 25, 1919. This is believed to be because Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij – better known as KLM – is generally considered the world's longest surviving airline. Its first flight from London's Croydon airport took off to Amsterdam, with a British pilot at the controls of a leased British plane, on May 17, 1920.
WORLD'S FIRST INTERNATIONAL PASSENGER SERVICE
Regardless, it's accepted the world's first scheduled international service took off on August 25, 1919, at 9.10am, from London's Hounslow Heath bound for Paris, piloted by "Bill" Lawford. The only passenger was an Evening Standard reporter who had paid Britain's first commercial airline, Aircraft Transport and Travel, 20 guineas for the privilege (though the flight also contained several "brace of grouse destined for the tables of discerning Parisians").
According to the reporter's exclusive after the de Hallivand's arrival at Le Bourget, the trip involved much "hedge-hopping" and "wave-hopping" as Lawford (in an open cockpit!) followed the railway lines and cross-Channel ferries, due to poor visibility, before rising to the maximum height of 4000 feet (1220 metres) over France.
Still, the first international commercial flight, was deemed a huge success, flying "at express speed" and taking a mere 2½ hours to cover 350 kilometres.
LONDON TO AUSTRALIA … IN JUST 12 DAYS
Aircraft Transport and Travel was joined by a plethora of privately-owned British airlines offering international journeys with flying aces from World War I as pilots. But the Brits struggled because rival European airlines were subsidised by governments. In 1924, British airlines were rationalised and Imperial Airways (the real forerunner of BA) was created with a mandate to develop routes to the furthest reaches of the British Empire: South Africa, India and Australia.
Fast forward to April 13, 1935, and Imperial and Qantas launched its ground-breaking, 20,500-kilometre service from London's Croydon airfield to Brisbane. The journey took just 12 days, leaving London at lunchtime on a Saturday, and arriving the following week at Brisbane – after 32 stops. Part of the trip, Paris to Brindisi, was completed by rail. Mussolini's fascist government refused permission for a foreign airline to fly over Italian airspace.

DON'T MENTION THE WAR
BOAC started operations on April Fool's Day 1940, during Britain's "darkest hour" as Imperial merged with British Airways. During World War II, BOAC and Qantas joined forces, particularly on the Horseshoe Route between Auckland and Durban that kept wartime correspondence flowing throughout the "empire".
Immediately after Germany's surrender, the two airlines combined on two different services. On May 31, 1945, the first post-war flight from Britain to Sydney left Bournemouth. A year later, they introduced a twice-weekly flying boat service between Poole harbour and Sydney's Rose Bay, which took just five days, via Egypt, Iraq, Pakistan, India, Burma and Singapore. And before May 1946 was out, the first post-war BOAC/Qantas land service began using converted Avro Lancaster bombers cunningly disguised as Lancastrian passenger planes.
The Lancastrian only accommodated nine passengers seated along the side of the fuselage like parachutists. But it did contain what it is arguably the first "flat bed" in commercial aviation – a bunk in what would now be considered the overhead locker. The switch over location between BOAC and Qantas staff was Karachi.
Tumblr media
The De Havilland Comet's first arrival in Australia (before the Sydney Opera House was built).
ONWARDS AND UPWARDS
In December 1948, the elegant four-engine Lockheed Constellation began a weekly service that slashed flying time between Britain and Australia. A poster from that era, advertising Australia to Britons, shows outback stockmen watching the Constellation soar above them in a gum-strewn blue sky.
The Constellation record was itself smashed in 1953 when British European Airways, usually confined to Europe, entered the London-to-Christchurch air race to publicise the British-made Vickers Viscount V700's speed between "short legs" (19,900 kilometres in less than 41 hours). But it was the Comet that introduced the "jet age" to Australia, quickly followed by Boeing's 707, which BOAC used on Australian services from 1962. Another poster, showing a blonde female surfer striding towards the Pacific is from that period, circa 1965.
Over the next 30 years British Airways purchased 36 Boeing 747s – the original "jumbo jet" – more than any other airline and several flew to Australia. But BA's Concorde, which flew at 2180km/h (cruise speed) from 1969-2003, never had a chance to test the record to Sydney.
FIVE FAMOUS BA FLIGHTS
1938
After meeting Hitler following the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain emerged from his British Airways flight from Munich, proclaiming "Peace in our time!"
1942
Winston Churchill was the first British PM to fly across the Atlantic when he travelled to meet US President Roosevelt. His BOAC Boeing 314 flying boat flew from Plymouth, via Bermuda and Norfolk, Virginia, then on to Washington DC.
1952
After the death of her father, King George VI, Princess Elizabeth left Kenya instead of continuing her royal tour to Australia. She arrived on a BOAC plane at Heathrow as Queen Elizabeth II.
2005
British PM Tony Blair was aboard a British Airways 777-200 when it set a new record for the world's longest non-stop commercial flight from Brussels to Melbourne – 17,157 kilometres in 18 hours 45 minutes.
2011
Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh flew the first non-stop flight from Perth to London aboard a BA 777 after a Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference. Now Qantas flies the 14,498 kilometre non-stop route in about 18 hours and plans a non-stop flight from Sydney to London by 2022.
SEVEN FAMOUS BA UNIFORMS
1922
Daimler Airway was a subsidiary of BSA (Birmingham Small Arms Company, known for its engines and motorcycles). Swallowed by Imperial, and thus BA, it employed the first "cabin boys" to serve passengers.
1967
Until the 1960s, male and female BA flight attendants wore military-style uniforms. That changed when the first made-to-measure uniforms for the 1500 female "stewardesses" employed by British European Airways were designed by Sir Hardy Amies, the Queen's couturier.
1967
Meanwhile, BOAC introduced paper "mini-dresses" for stewardesses flying to the West Indies. Meant to be discarded after each flight, legend has it sometimes they didn't last that long, with "high-spirited male passengers tempted to take a cigarette lighter to see what would happen".
1969
Tumblr media
To celebrate delivery of its first Boeing 747s, BOAC awarded Clive Evans the commission of designing its new female uniform, beating Mary Quant. It chose between Caribbean blue or coral pink for its summer uniform, which was made from Terylene and cotton so it could be washed in a hotel sink and left to drip-dry overnight.
1992
Tumblr media
Roland Klein's distinctive red, white and blue vertical stripes had been considered a great success, but Paul Costelloe produced what many regard as the signature BA outfit: a classically tailored single-breasted suit with a silky print blouse or dress and a distinctive upturned boater.
2004
Tumblr media
Julien MacDonald, whose outfits had been worn by Nicole Kidman, Kylie Minogue and many other celebrities, was tasked with designing outfits for 25,000 staff of different body shapes and sizes.
2019
Ozwald Boateng is BA's new designer. His top secret uniforms, now for 32,000 staff, will be unveiled before the "centenary" on August 25 this year.
FIVE OLDEST INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES (without changing names)
KLM: 1920
Its first flight, from London to Amsterdam, used a British pilot at the controls of a leased British plane.
Qantas: 1920
Originally it went by the name Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services, but what Aussie ever called it that? Its first international passenger flight in 1935 was from Darwin to Singapore.
Delta: 1928
Now the world's second-largest airline, Delta began in 1924 as a crop-dusting service but became Delta when it started taking passengers. It's first international flight in 1953 was from New Orleans to Caracas via Havana.
Aeroflot: 1932
Founded in 1923, its first international passenger service was from Moscow to Stockholm in 1937.
LOT Polish Airlines: 1929
Its first international route, Warsaw to Vienna, flew in 1929 but LOT ceased operations during World War II.

There’s something inherently scary about growing up. Your parents have been taking care of you for 18 years, and now it’s time to leave the nest. Although I technically “flew the nest” more than a year ago, it became even more obvious that I’m becoming an adult when I signed my very first lease two weeks ago.
I’ve been living in a university residence for the past two years, and although I was doing my own laundry, buying my own toiletries & groceries, and travelling across the country alone, it never truly sank in that I was an adult. I still had parental figures in res (the warden and house committee), however I’m now moving into a flat and that brings a whole bunch of more freedom and responsibilites!
With moving into a flat, comes the added task of decorating – my flatmate, Cait, and I are super excited to have a place of our own that we can decorate and customise as we wish! Our bedrooms & en-suites are our OWN space to decorate but we will be combining forces to decorate our living room and kitchen area.
ENTRY-WAY & KITCHEN
The communal area of our two-bedroom flat is open-plan, although I’ve been treating the kitchen and entryway as a separate entity to our living room. Whilst the kitchen won’t require much decorating – just a couple of cute storage jars here & there, and maybe a plant or two -, I would love to have a cute entryway. There are more pressing things that would be considered before this but maybe a few months down the line we can start looking at this area.
Cait and I have bought a little “Welcome” sign with three little hooks for our keys, so obviously that will go here, but I think a table or a couple of shelves with some decor could really liven up the place and set the tone for the rest our our apartment.
I love ladder shelves, and one day I aim to have something similar in my home. I love the first shelf because it’s quite compact and cute, but still very effective. There are so many way to decorate it – plants, books, picture frames, candles. The list is endless, and you can see by the second ladder shelf what I mean. The smaller shelves are also very cute and functional – this would probably suit the apartment more space wise.
The pallet plant & light feature is also so different and compelling, although it would definitely be a DIY job… Another DIY would definitely be the hanging rope shelf – I know Cait wants to make and hang some of these in her bedroom. Perhaps I should do a bit of crafts once we’ve moved in.
LIVING ROOM
So far, Cait and I have decided to keep our living room theme quite organic – we plan on using simple colours like white and cream and accenting with “rustic” wooden pieces and LOADS of plants & greenery. We actually bought some lovely green cushions the other day, that are not only super squishy but also bring the perfect amount of vibrancy to the table!
Couch-wise, Cait and I have found our ideal couch. It’s on the right side of comfortable and makes you want to curl up on it with a book in hand and drift in-and-out of sleep. Paired with our squishy pillows, I think a lightweight throw will complete the look of cozy and cute. The living room is where we are going to socialise, so it’s important to enjoy the area. The couch can also double as a sleeping place if any of our friends need to crash at our place for a night.
Whilst our pillows are great, I would love to find some printed or textured/knitted pillows to also inhabit our couch. This will just further enhance the couch area.
As I said before, we are trying to keep everything organic – there is definitely a heavy plant& reclaimed wood influence. In addition, it would be awesome if I could find a unique coffee table, like this hair-pin leg or crate table.
Personally, I’d love to frame and hang some leafy prints on the wall. They definitely fill up space, and stop a room from looking bare. Different sizes is obviously ideal, as it adds dimension, and creates a wonderful visual effect. No matter what plant print it is – banana leaf, monstera, fern – I think it would look great upon our wall!
  BEDROOM & EN-SUITE
Cait and I each have our own bedroom and en-suite bathroom, so we will be decorating that individually. In my room I am aiming to have a clean colour scheme with a pale mint/turquoise influence and light wooden furniture pieces. I’d also love to incorporate more plants into my room, as certain plants can be beneficial for sleep and other various things – I don’t have many now because I can’t take my plants back to Durban every holiday and I can’t leave them in my residence room (which I have to constantly pack up).
Tumblr media
Bed-wise, I am hoping to buy a double bed. I currently have a single in res, but a queen size at home, and I like to starfish when I sleep. I also move around quite a bit and have in fact fallen out of bed at res due to riggling at night. I would love to find an inexpensive wooden bedframe, but I also love the idea of repurposing wood pallets as my bed base. This is a super simple DIY, so I might go that route if I can find pallets in good condition. I would probably keep them unpainted, like in the third picture, because I really like the wooden aspect. And of course it’s important to decorate a bed with pillows and throws – I currently have two throws on my bed, which will come with to the flat, and two decorative pillows (I want to add more though)!
As for a bedside table, I have ordered a pine crate to mount on my wall. I just love the “floating” aspect, and will definitely continue the mounted crate trend throughout my room – my workspace is begging for some adorable, yet functional, storage! I’d also love to hang some fairylights, and possibly a tapestry, up in order to spruce up the walls. The fairylights are definitely a must – it just adds this ambience to a room (SO cozy).
I will be taking a lot of my current res decor to the flat, which includes a white board, chalk board, several decorative jars and hanging decor. I will most likely be using these at my workspace. I have actually ordered a desk like the one below, but to my specific dimensions. I am so excited because I spend most of my time at my desk, whether  I am doing university work, my makeup or just messing around on my laptop.
Tumblr media
I have a lot of desk decor, but as I mentioned before, I would love to mount crates on the wall as storage and add more plants to the area – oxygen in vital for good brain activity after all! Pinterest has given me so many great ideas from wire sheets to hang various pictures and knick-knacks on, to simple decor. My workspace is special to me, and I want it to be perfect. This would probably be the most personal area of my room, and I cant wait to mix and match decor to acheive my sanctuary.
Personally I don’t think I’ll do much to my en-suite. It is pretty small, and at most I’ll hang an interesting mirror and maybe some shelves. Obviously I will co-ordinate my towels, and have a cute shower caddy (1) (2) – that can remain in the bathroom unlike in the communal residence bathrooms.
I can’t wait to move into our little apartment and start making it our own! This is a HUGE step in becoming more independent, and I hope I thrive.

The Invasion of Madagascar
Plans to take the Vichy French island of Madagascar, codenamed Operation Ironclad, had been laid even before the Japanese fleet made their incursion into the Indian Ocean in April 1942. The fear was that the island could be used as a staging point for Axis forces, such as German or Japanese submarines or surface raiders, to operate in the Ocean. This would threaten the vital supply routes from Europe to the Far East via the Suez Canal or the Cape of Good Hope. Initial plans called for the capture of the port of Diego Suarez, on the northern tip of Madagascar, with the rest of the island to be conquered gradually thereafter. Diego Suarez had one of the finest natural harbours in the world, and the city was easily defensible from the sea and the land. A single airfield at Arrachart served the north of the island.
French forces on the island were relatively small. After the fall of France the Vichy government had aligned with Nazi Germany, although in military terms it was mostly equipped with equipment that had survived the fall of France. Ground troops on Madagascar consisted mainly of colonial troops – Senegalese and Malagaches for the most part, led by French officers but lacking heavy equipment such as artillery and armoured vehicles. The Vichy Air Force contingent was likewise small, with about 20 reasonably modern MS.406 fighters, some Potez 63.11 reconnaissance craft, and a few ancient Potez 25 biplanes.
The British assembled two army brigades and a Royal Marines commando unit for Operation Ironclad, carried aboard several transports. These troops were backed up by the Eastern Fleet’s Force F, under the command of Vice Admiral Edward Syfret, centred on the carriers Illustrious and Indomitable, the old battleship Ramillies, a cruiser and 8 destroyers. Aboard the carriers were five squadrons of fighters: Martlets (Lend-Lease F4F Wildcats), Fulmars, and Sea Hurricanes. There were also two squadrons of Albacores, and two of Swordfish. Waiting in Africa for an airfield to be captured was 16 Squadron, South African Air Force, with Maryland and Beaufort bombers.

Operation Ironclad
The invasion fleet assembled at Durban, South Africa, with many of the ships sailing all the way from Britain to join Syfret’s force. The ships departed Durban on the 25th of April, heading north for Madagascar. It was hoped that after the capture of Diego Garcia the French governor of the island would agree to an armistice, but this would prove to be an overly optimistic estimate of the situation. The ships moved into position during the night to land troops at dawn on the 5th of May. The French were caught completely by surprise by Operation Ironclad and the landings on five beaches in and around Courier Bay on the western coast of Madagascar were unopposed. The British then began to advance on the towns of Diego Garcia and Antsirane.
Both Illustrious and Indomitable launched aircraft to support the invasion. Fighters patrolled over the beachhead whilst the Albacores and Swordfish moved in to support the advancing troops. The Swordfish attacked French vessels in the harbour in several waves of six. The first wave attacked sloop D’Entrecasteaux initially, but did not cause significant damage. They then turned their attention to the armed merchant cruiser Bougainville, dropping several torpedoes which streaked towards the immobile ship. She was hit by a torpedo, blew up, and sank. A second wave of Swordfish was armed with depth charges, and they used these to sink the submarine Beveziers. The third wave dropped leaflets advising the French to surrender, and then attack the D’Entrecasteaux. The sloop again escaped major damage and was eventually able to leave the harbour. She attempted to make her way around the northern coast of Madagascar to attack the mass of British shipping supporting the landings, but the following day she was again attacked again by Swordfish which bombed and heavily damaged her. She was then beached to prevent her loss.
Albacores from Indomitable meanwhile attacked Arrachart airfield. They achieved complete surprise, with all of the French aircraft at the field still on the ground. Five MS.406 fighters were destroyed and several other aircraft damaged, which secured the air over the north of Madagascar for the British. Soon the remaining MS.406s and Po.63s flew to Anavorano, about 50 miles south of Diego Suarez, from where they could fly in support of the embattled garrison in the town.
Meanwhile twin ground advances towards Diego Suarez and Antsirane were underway. The day after the landings, British forces were closing in on Diego Suarez itself, whilst another column struggled to break through the French defences at the Col de Bonne Nouvelle, south of Antsirane. Three Potez Pz.63 reconnaissance aircraft flew north, two heading for the British transport whilst the third headed for the landing beaches. Martlets from Illustrious’ 881 Squadron were on patrol and spotted the oncoming planes, quickly shooting down two. Three of the French crewmen survived to be taken prisoner. Meanwhile Swordfish had spotted, and then depth charged, the submarine Le Héros. She was sunk, although most of her crew was rescued.
Albacores and Swordfish were drafted in to bomb the French defences in the hopes of allowing a breakthrough, whilst other aircraft dropped dummy parachutists in the hopes that these would draw away some of the defending troops. Still the French held on, so a daring assault was planned by Royal Marines loaded on board the destroyer Anthony. These landed directly on the quay at Antsirane and caused chaos and the French rear, which had a distinct effect on the defence of the town. In the very early hours of the 7th of May, the French line finally broke.
Later that day, three MS.406s flew north to look over the landing beaches and establish the strength of the naval forces protecting the beachhead. Four patrolling Martlets of 881 Squadron spotted the interlopers, and rolled into the attack. In the subsequent air combat, the only such incident during the entire operation, all three of the Moranes were shot down whilst one of the Martlets was forced to crash land when a cannon shell disabled the engine. One of the French pilots was killed, whilst the other two escaped with minor wounds and soon returned to their unit. Thereafter, the Vichy air forces were kept away from the area due to the overwhelming superiority of the British fighter force.
Ships then bombarded Antsirane until white flag of surrender was flown by the French commander. With the town and Antsirane now under British control, surrender terms were agreed soon agreed. The French burned their remaining aircraft at Arrachart, and the ground crews withdrew to the south to continue the fight. The British now controlled the vital port, but much work remained to be done – the French forces in the south of Madagascar failed to surrender as expected. Diego Suarez was largely separated from the rest of Madagascar, the transport system being very poor. The French could therefore move their forces relatively easily between the other major towns on the island, whilst the British would have to plan their next moves carefully.
Continued Operations on Madagascar
The carriers Illustrious and Indomitable were due to be withdrawn to the Mediterranean, with Malta hard pressed and desperate for support. A mixed force of several independent South African Air Force flights (later amalgamated into 20 Squadron, SAAF) arrived at Arrachart on the 12th of May. 20 Squadron had a mixed group of Bristol Beaufort and Martin Maryland bombers, with Lockheed Lodestar transports available for logistics support. The South Africans also had a small number of German-built Ju 52 transports which had previously been purchased by South African Airlines, and these were also used on the transport run to Madagascar. Two Fleet Air Arm squadrons, 795 with Fairey Fulmars and 796 with Albacores also arrived at Arrachart, as did a small flight RAF Westland Lysander cooperation aircraft.
The first months of the occupation were relatively quiet, apart from two incidents. On the 29th of May, an aircraft was seen to fly over Diego Suarez harbour, although this was initially dismissed as a probable French reconnaissance flight. In fact, the aircraft was a Japanese E14Y that had been launched from the submarine I-10. The next day, a midget submarine penetrated the harbour and torpedoed the battleship Ramillies and the tanker British Loyalty. The tanker sank, whilst the Ramillies was forced to sail to Durban for repairs. Rumours abounded that the Japanese submarines had been refuelled at Majunga, in the French-held sector of the island. Whether or not this was true, it was clear that the southern part of the island had to be occupied to force the French to surrender the entire island.
20 Squadron occupied its time flying reconnaissance sorties over Majunga on the west coast, Tamatave on the east coast, and routes to both from Diego Suarez, helping to map the routes to the capital of the island, Tannarive. The Royal Navy, meanwhile, sortied into the Bay of Bengal in July. The carriers Illustrious and Formidable made a sweep as a distraction operation whilst the Americans invaded Guadalcanal. Formidable was then sent to the Mediterranean, leaving just Illustrious to support any further landing attempts on Madagascar.

Operation Streamline Jane
jQuery("#flickr_recent_517").data("options","delay":5000,"autoplay":true,"transition":500,"link":"next","target":"_self");
The Occupation of Majunga and Tamatave
Realising that further operations would be required to bring the French to the negotiating table, the British launched Operation Streamline Jane, a series of landings designed to capture the rest of the island. Initial landings were made at Majunga on the 10th of September. Swordfishes from Illustrious flew cover over the area but did not need to attack, as the troops quickly occupied Majunga airfield and the town itself surrendered soon afterwards. Infantry and armoured cars immediately set off for Tannarive in order to capture key bridges on the route. The second of these bridges had been wired for demolition but the job had been botched, and the bridge was still passable. The French despatched their single remaining Pz.63 to bomb it, but the attack was unsuccessful and the bridge was soon repaired.
The advance was relatively straightforward apart from occasional roadblocks and destroyed bridges, all of which were quickly cleared by engineers. The French governor in Tannarive requested an armistice, so a Maryland was sent to nearby Ivato with a delegation of British officials. Surrender terms were discussed, but rejected by the French, so the delegation was withdrawn, and the campaign continued. After a brief bombardment on the 18th, Tamatave on the east coast was occupied by British troops. They too began an advance towards the capital.
Hoping to prevent troops and supplies escaping from Tannarive, 20 Squadron launched several bombing raids on the Betsikoba Bridge, joined by Fleet Air Arm Albacores. After four attempts the bridge was still standing, and so the South Africans gave up in order to concentrate on other priorities. Amongst these were attempts to find the remnants of the French air forces on the island, which still launched occasional reconnaissance or strafing missions. The French were using an airfield unknown to the British commanders, and so several armed reconnaissance missions were mounted to all of the known landing grounds still in Vichy hands. During one of these missions, on October 7th, a hangar was bombed at Ihosy airfield and several aircraft spotted hidden nearby. The following day three Beauforts mounted a strafing and bombing attack, followed by several other attacks over the next few days. All but one of the remaining French aircraft were destroyed or rendered unserviceable, with the last Morane finally grounded in late October.
After further landings in the south, the French finally realised the futility of their situation. With South African troops poised to make the final advance on Ihosy, the last French stronghold, the governor finally agreed to terms and an armistice was granted on November 6th. Madagascar was finally completely in Allied hands. Just a few days later the Vichy French would again be in action against Allied forces when the Operation Torch landings began in North Africa, but by November 10th they had surrender. Shortly afterwards German troops occupied the Vichy half of France.

REAL ESTATE MARKET IN SOUTH AFRICA STABLE AND POSITIVE FOR 2017
With the arrival of the year it is common to find articles on the projections of the real estate market for that year that begins.
Although no one, of course, has a crystal ball here I present to you a brief summary of what the experts expect for 2017 regarding the real estate market. Our focus is on the real estate market in South Africa.
HEALTHY MARKET BUT SLOWS ITS PACE: 2017 should be a stable and adjusting year for the real estate market in South Africa. In recent months sales have slowed and prices, especially condominiums, have increased dramatically in the past two years.
Now the consensus seems to be that things will continue more or less the same with an adjustment in the prices of the apartments slowing the rise which should help to ensure a more stable market for 2017.
