I am going to cry? not even joking.
so there's this stupid little melody that has been stuck in my head for over a goddamn DECADE. I am 100% not exaggerating. the facts: I KNOW that it's classical music, a full orchestral piece, and the bit that's stuck is played by the brass section. the problem is that it's SO simple - it's literally just a broken triad - that no one I've talked to can place it, and it's not specific enough to search for online (and I have TRIED)
until now.
there's this site I just got shown called musipedia.org. it's apparently particularly good at identifying classical music - you can input it in a variety of ways (half are flash and don't work, sadly). with one of the ways, you can program in a melodic contour (literally just saying if notes go up or down) and...it works? really well??
I had another random little bit of something stuck in my head, so I put in the contour, and it immediately identified it:
Tumblr media
lookit that! it's SO SPECIFIC DANG!
and so I put in that stupid little melody that has fucking plagued me and...
Tumblr media
oh my god. that's it. it's fucking Tchaikovsky. I played it at least twice in high school, and somehow it just lodged in my brain but was like, so basic I could never place it. I am literally near tears, I have SOLVED this fucking mystery oh my god it's been so many years aaaaaaaaa
anyways here's the demon piece:

FIREBIRD.
Gustav Mahler, Symphony No. 10 in F-sharp major
Philip Glass, Hymn to the Sun from: Akhnaten
Igor Stravinsky, The Firebird
Anders Hillborg, Liquid Marble
Jean Sibelius, The Swan of Tuonela

MANCHESTER - PART TWENTY.
Well folks, we made it. It is the end of my first year here in Manchester, and FUCK, it has gone quickly.
It has been quite the two and a bit weeks. I have developed my oboe playing immensely in this time, thanks to two hugely beneficial projects.
The first was a vibrant programme of Strauss, Mendelssohn and Milhaud with the RNCM Chamber Orchestra and incredible conductor, Antony Hermus. The energy he injected into every musician was just wonderful from start to finish, as was the responsibility he gave us to communicate with each other in an open way to make music that was truly a joint vision.
The concert itself was emotional, my first since the pandemic arose last year, and full of fun and high adrenaline. I think my personal highlight was letting go in Milhaud's surrealist Le Boeuf sur le Toit (in English 'The Ox on the Roof: The Nothing Doing Bar'), playing with absolute enthusiasm and being encouraged to dance in this finale where we were all upstanding. It reminded me why I really adore playing with orchestra, particularly with colleagues I have grown to really admire as people and players, as I did that week.
A truly memorable performance, and one of this year's highlights.
Over that weekend I received my second COVID-19 vaccination. Luckily, I did not have to wait the three hours I had to for the first one! On completion, Divine Foundation coffee was enjoyed with Cameron, here again in Manchester. I then got super excited when we discovered the most heavenly new clothes store in the Northern Quarter. I wanted every single item for my wardrobe.
With prices not exactly cheap (fair enough though, the quality of everything was undeniable), I refrained from literally buying the whole store and we made our way home for leek and mushroom tart to accompany our nice beers and the Euros. Wow, I feel so masculine saying that. What is this.
Sunday was its usual relaxed self. We headed to lovely West Didsbury for divine deli treats, then back for coffee, a spot of reading and for me brushing up on my French. Très rouillé.
Keeping in the French spirit, we enjoyed ratatouille for tea, which was highly wholesome.
The week just gone has been another of anxiety and deflation. Some days I just haven't been up for the level of focus and will to achieve good results that I normally would. However, I performed really rather well in the Rothwell Oboe Prize hosted by the college on Wednesday, giving me a welcome boost and reaffirming that things often come together on the day and little bits of work are effective.
Over the weekend it was time to brave playing with others once more, this time in a project with musicians of the RNCM and Manchester Camerata. There was a double dose of Beethoven and some exciting new compositions, so to have these fantastic musicians working by our side brought all these pieces to life. I also had the opportunity of really refining my second oboe playing skills, which I sometimes find more difficult than playing the principal role. However, so much was taken from working on blend and fitting in with the whole wind section so I am hugely grateful for that. Three days of rehearsals culminated in a quality concert on Tuesday evening, inspiring me to now go back and look at basics in even further detail.
And now summer is here. I shall be flitting from Manchester to home to Birmingham over the next couple of months before embarking on what will probably be the craziest experience I have ever undergone. Five months on my own in Paris.
QUEL?!
I shall be documenting my experiences as I set foot in the French metropolis in September, from fucking up communicating in another language to gauging on the most amazing food to attempting to take my playing to an even further level.
It's like reaching World 8 in Super Mario Bros. Anyone else get that feeling? Nah, OK.
But for now, Manchester will do.
I thank it for everything this year and beyond.

. Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra: Conducted by Antony Hermus, with a violinist, Rossane Philippens. . I felt honoured even I attended for free, only by registering on their website. . And voila! Everything was like a magic. . I was like waking up in a whole new world. Feel like classy between those expatriates and art enthusiasts who wore nice dresses and suits, meanwhile I was still in 'seragam kantoran' from head to toe. And most of them talked in alien pronounciation (re: Dutch). Yap, I was a total stranger. . But I didn't mind, because, you know, the orchestra invited me to communicate beyond words, allowed me to feel the thrills and goosebumps, enough to make me putting down the title as the-monotone-worker-all-day, although I was in 'that' style. . I feel the universality on my very first orchestra concert. That was too superb to tell! . Thanks to this pals @lorenzonggili @anisaanastia for this rare chance! (at Taman Ismail Marzuki)

Who has been your greatest inspiration and why ? A big inspiration for me are a lot of conductors of the „senior” generation: Haitink, Abbado, Giulini, Bernstein, Jansons. The way they are passionate about music and the way they work with and inspire many orchestras are big examples for us conductors of the younger generation. And of course the hero of the heroes, Carlos Kleiber: the most genius conductor ever on this earth.
What is you favourite orchestral work or repertoire ? I am a musical „omnivore”: I like so many composers, so much music, not only classical. Very high on my toplist are Strauss, Wagner, Mozart and Beethoven, but I also like very much the italian opera-repertoire, and the french impressionism. And of course one of my heroes is Stravinsky. The Firebird, which I will conduct with the OSR in the complete ballet version is one of the great and colorful scores he left us.
When did you know you wanted to be a conductor and what were the milestones of your career ? Music has always been an important part of my life, since I started playing the piano from the age of 5. When I was 17 years old, I suddenly had to jump in for an ill conductor during an orchestra rehearsal of the Grieg piano concerto which I was playing with that orchestra. From that moment on I was triggered by working and making music with such a big ensemble, and from then on I started spending every spare minute on reading scores and watching many rehearsals and concerts. Also opera became an important part of my conducting life, since I was Generalmusikdirektor in two opera houses in Germany. In my career happened a lot of great things, but if I have to mention two major events I would choose my first rehearsals and concerts with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in my hometown Amsterdam, and my two complete cycles of Wagners Ring des Nibelungen, which happened both last season.
