The Strage di Via D'Amelio (aka the Via D'Amelio Bombing) was a terrorist attack carried out by the Sicilian Mafia on July 19th 1992 to eliminate one of their worst enemies, Anti-Mafia magistrate Paolo Borsellino. His fellow colleague and close friend, Judge Giovanni Falcone, had been killed 57 days prior in another bombing attack.

The terrorists had taken advantage of the usual visits the judge used to pay to his mother, Maria Pia Lepanto, who at that time lived in an apartment in Via D'Amelio together with her daughter, future Anti-Mafia activist Rita Borsellino.

Alongside the Judge, in the attack died five members of his escort: Agents Agostino Catalano, Emanuela Loi (the first Italian female member of a police escort and the first to be killed on duty), Vincenzo Li Muli, Walter Eddie Cosina, and Claudio Traina. The only survivor of the escort in the bombing was Agent Antonino Vullo.

As he will recount: "I didn't hear any noise, nothing suspicious, nothing at all. Suddenly it was hell. I saw a huge blaze and I felt the armored car jolting. The shockwave threw me out of the seat. I don't know how I managed to get out of the car. Around me there were shreds of human flesh scattered everywhere".

In 2012 it was confirmed the existence of negotiations between Italian institutions and the Sicilian mafia. According to Judge Antonino Di Matteo, the Via D'Amelio Bombing was carried out "to protect the [State-Mafia] pact from the danger that Dott. Borsellino, having being made aware of it, would publically reveal and denounce its existence, thus irreparably compromising its desired outcome"

It's worth noting that, after the bombing, the so called agenda rossa (red notebook) owned by Borsellino, that the Judge always took with him and where he used to write down his notes regarding his investigations mysteriously disappeared and it hasn't been found ever since.

1977: Radio Aut

Pitch: A visual short story documenting the true struggles of an anti-Mafia activist Peppino Impastato in mid-20th century Sicily.

My expectations: The Itch page provides a one-sentence description and no screenshots. Pretty gutsy. I have absolutely no idea what to expect.

Review:

Prior to 1977: Radio Aut, I’d never heard of political activist Giuseppe "Peppino" Impastato or his efforts to free the Sicilian town of Cinisi from Mafia control. It’s a great story… in the wrong format. 1977: Radio Aut casts players as Peppino, presenting his story through text, illustration, mood-setting audio, and interactive decisions. The 8-bit-ish style looks fine, but thematically, it’s completely out of place. Text is often difficult to read, not helped by a number of typos—significant issues in a game that’s mostly about reading words.

By my rough tally, there are 104 text screens, 26 of which ask for player input. Not a bad ratio, except that most offer only a single option or otherwise prevent the story from going down the wrong path. That leaves just seven screens with two selectable choices, and none of those make any difference, because this is a true story about a real person. It only happened one way. Why not show Peppino’s story from another point of view, casting players as a fictional Cinisi resident, pulled between Mafia intimidation and Radio Aut’s call to action? Why not make a YouTube video? Or a Tumblr post? This medium doesn’t suit the message.

– What's the point of interactive fiction without interactivity? – Games have the power to put players in a place and time, encouraging empathy and understanding in a unique way. 1977 speeds through decades of Peppino's life, giving an overview of a few major turning points, but rarely pausing to consider the texture of his life or the small steps toward big action. – Wikipedia says Peppino's newsletters and broadcasts were full of satire and puns. A joke or two would have gone a long way in this deadly serious downer. – Text is difficult to read.

Mafia-themed food items sold abroad unacceptable, say Italian farmers

"Italy’s biggest farmers’ association is waging a battle against the “scandalous” use of mafia terms to sell a variety of food and drink products around the world, from Cosa Nostra whiskey to Chilli Mafia tomato sauce.

Coldiretti undertook an extensive investigation and also discovered that almost 300 restaurants beyond Italy have mafia-themed names, including El Padrino in Spain, Don Corleone in Finland, Burger Mafia in Germany, Falafel Mafia in the US and Nasi Goreng Mafia in Indonesia.

Alessandro Apolito, a branch manager at Coldiretti, said the most shocking discovery was a machine gun-shaped bottle of whisky produced in Scotland and called Cosa Nostra Shot.

“It’s scandalous to think that somebody could buy something of this kind, even if it’s only for a joke,” said Apolito. “For us, joking about such serious things like the mafia is unacceptable.”

He said the mafia-themed marketing not only caused incredible damage to Italy’s image and genuine produce, but was hugely offensive towards innocent Italians who have died or suffered at the hands of the country’s notorious criminal organisations."

I desperately await the reveal of Mafia AU Balam...So while we wait, here's my take on him physically, and my bestfriendwife's take on his role. That being an ex-gangster who's trying to repair and clean up the slums, but everyone is still scared of regardless. In our au he gets dragged back into the gang shit when Kalego, and old associate and friend, calls him back in to babysit/bodyguard for the newest of the Don's kidnapped grandkids

We need to address something I don't see coming up enough in the fanon vs canon conversation about Jason vs Dick being tim's Robin. We talk about how the size of the hero worship for Dick, the victim blaming, how Jason was like this shadow/threat looming over tim, how everyone starting with Bruce and Alfred disrespected his memory to use as a cautionary tale so the image tim had of Jason wasn't accurate, and again the amount of victim blaming that was so fucked up, and how there was also this idea that this is still a dead child which implies some very martyrish form of "well you have to honour his legacy and aim to be as good as him and save the people he cared about because he's fucking dead" and I think that that canon fucked up parasocial relationship between tim and Jason has the potential to be so interesting (they deserved so much more than the titan tower fight for real it could have been fascinating exploring that). All of this can be interesting and it can be deep and angsty and so good.

But!

But.

Hear me out:

The real thing that's missing from this discourse, once we've acknowledged the worth and reality of canon, is that (even without the very woopified emo tim representation), fanfics about how Jason was tim's hero and tim's Robin would send early Robin tim, at least, into such a rage. I'm not saying there's no nuance or he just hates Jason and nothing else. But some versions of early tim specifically I think would feel such a deep rage at the implication that Jaybin was his favourite Robin and he only loved and idolized him, and I think that version of tim at least deserves it. Like, if I could make him read all of these fanfics and he has to and can't zone out I would do it, make it a lesson about victim-blaming (also the misogyny in some runs). Like isn't it nice to imagine? I think it's deeply funny, and I understand some people get upset about it because like they feel canon is more interesting but, if it's in fanfic, I think it's hilarious. I think we should just submit characters who do stuff that piss us off to that actually, write things about them that would infuriate them. Oh Jason taunts and laughs about the possibility of Dick dying in Chemo ? Fuck you, now you're scared and on the run from your family because they're crime lord killers and killing is bad and you're a soft boy who drinks honey lavender lattes. tim victim-blames Robin? Bam, you have hero worship now. Batman is always the center of the narrative and comics and it's always about him to the point it's really annoying and downplays the potential of other characters? Say goodbye to your dialogue lines buddy, you get one hug at the end if i'm feeling generous. Nobody is free from the magic wand of doom and the power of "it would be so fucking funny". This power is driving me insane. Let it consume you in the name of catharsis.
