Quarter Notes: Blurbs & Briefs from Sound Bites
- In this edition: Earth, Wind & Fire; Brandi Carlile; Oteil Burbridge; KISS
EWF SAX MAN ANDREW WOOLFOLK DIES AT 71: Longtime Earth, Wind & Fire saxophonist Andrew Woolfolk has died at 71, former bandmate Philip Bailey said on social media, citing an undisclosed illness.
Woolfolk played with the group from 1973 to 1985 and 1987 to 1993.
“Great memories. Great Talent. Funny. Competitive. Quick-witted. And always styling,” Bailey said of his friend.
BRANDI CARLILE HAS COVID, CANCELS FESTIVAL GIG: Brandi Carlile pulled out her April 29 appearance at California’s Stagecoch festival after contracting COVID-19.
“It finally got me,” she said.
OTEIL BURBRIDGE CANCELS SHOWS DUE TO FATHER’S FAILING HEALTH: Oteil Burbridge pulled out of performances at Atlanta’s Sweetwater 420 Festival with his Friends and in New Orleans with Voodoo Dead as his 91-year-old father “has started to cross over.”
The Friends gigs are canceled; bassists Reed Mathis and George Porter Jr. will fill in for Burbridge with Voodoo Dead.
HEY, MR. SPACEMAN: Gene Simmons used Twitter to invite Ace Frehley to join KISS on its latest farewell tour.
“Jump up on stage with us for encores,” Simmons said. “The fans would love it.”
If accepted, it would result in the awkward appearance of two Spacemen on stage alongside a Demon, a Starchild and a stand-in Catman.
