Indians Wallop Twins 12-3 To Take Series.

Indians 12 Twins 3 W-Quantrill (6-3) L-Jax (3-4)

The Minnesota Twins split a doubleheader from the Cleveland Indians yesterday. The two teams squared off for the final time in 2021 this evening at Target Field. Another pitcher’s duel broke out as Cal Quantrill and Griffin Jax threw up zeroes for the first three innings tonight. The Indians bats awoke in the fourth when Jose Ramirez lined a one-out double to center. With two outs, Bobby Bradley hit a run-scoring double to put Cleveland on the board first. The Indians got back to work in the fifth as Austin Hedges reached on an infield single. Andres Gimenez reached on a fielder’s choice and Oscar Mercado belted a Griffin Jax slider out to left for a three-run homer. Myles Straw kept the inning moving with a double to left. He reached third on a groundout and scored on a Jose Ramirez sacrifice fly. This put the Indians up by five after five innings of play. The Indians kept adding on in the seventh. Myles Straw led-off with a single and Bradley Zimmer did the same. Jose Ramirez hit an RBI single to center and Franmil Reyes kept the chain moving with a single. Bobby Bradley smacked an Andrew Albers fastball out to left to cap off a five-run seventh for the Tribe. The Twins finally found some offense in the bottom of the seventh. Byron Buxton led-off with a walk and Max Kepler walked with two outs. Miguel Sano blasted a Cal Quantrill slider out to left for a three-run homer and the Twins were within seven. The Indians got a run back when the first two batters of the eighth walked. Myles Straw singled and a run scored on a double play. Franmil Reyes homered in the ninth to put the Tribe up 12-3. Blake Parker had a 1-2-3 ninth and the Indians picked up the series win tonight.

-Final Thoughts- Griffin Jax was sailing through four innings then hit a wall in the fifth. He went 4 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Jovani Moran gave up four runs in 1 2/3 innings of work. Andrew Albers allowed three more runs over 2 2/3 innings and gave the bullpen the night off. Miguel Sano had two of the three hits for the team and knocked in three on his home run. The Twins hit 1-for-2 with runners in scoring position and left three men on base. Tomorrow is a much needed day off for the team. They will head to Toronto this weekend to play the Blue Jays. Michael Pineda will face Hyun-Jin Ryu in the series opener on Friday night.

On the latest episode of gracie thinks she’s an rph i’ve created a MASTERLIST OF LATINE FIRST NAMES. This is just my preference but i like naming my characters something based in reality so these are pulled from my high school yearbook (i live in a majority hispanic city) so it’s less about origins and more about what hispanic parents were naming their kids during 1996-2000 and honestly the baseline is really if it sounds nice with spanish vowels it goes.

This Week in Caps: Week 17

Welcome to This Week in Caps, a weekly newsletter where I recap everything important that’s been going on in the world of the Washington Capitals this past week.

This Week’s Games

01/22/19 vs San Jose Sharks, L 6-7 (OT)

The Caps are on a losing streak, the Sharks are on a losing streak. It was shaping up to be a nutso game and by golly it was.

The Caps like to give up early leads, but this time it was especially early. Just 12 seconds into the game, Joe Pavelski swept it in past Braden Holtby, 1-0 Sharks. The Caps didn’t score until halfway through the period, when they were on a power play and Alex Ovechkin cleaned up the rebound by the net to tie the game 1-1. Less than two minutes later, Andre Burakovsky roofed it top corner to give the Caps a 2-1 lead. Then the Sharks tied it up again two minutes later on a Tomas Hertl power play goal. But the Caps took the lead again a minute after that; Ovechkin drove into the zone and passed it to T.J. Oshie, who slipped it around Martin Jones for the 3-2 lead.

The Sharks scored early in the second period; Evander Kane scored at the front of the net to tie the game 3-3. Two minutes later, the Caps got the lead back on an Evgeny Kuznetsov sharp-angle goal. A few minutes later, Ovechkin scored once more from the back of the circles to increase the lead to 5-3. The Sharks inched closer near the end of the period with Logan Couture scoring a breakaway goal just after a Sharks penalty expired.

In the third period, Ovechkin completed the hat trick off a rush play, making it 6-4 Caps. But then Hertl scored another power play goal midway through the period, and Kane scored with less than a second on the clock, and the game was tied 6-6 and required overtime. Hertl scored in overtime to complete his own hat trick and send the Sharks home with an overtime victory.

The Caps were just outshot 43-39 and had the faceoff disadvantage at 46.9%. The Caps went 1/3 on power play chances and the Sharks went 2/6 on theirs. Holtby saved 36/43 shots.

If you’re gonna lose, do it while having fun. It was heartbreaking, sure, but at least there were thirteen goals in this game.

01/23/19 @ Toronto Maple Leafs, L 3-6

No bullshit introduction from me this time, I’m tired of losing. Brooks Orpik was scratched before the game, so both Madison Bowey and Jonas Siegenthaler would be in.

The only action that happened for much of the first was Alex Ovechkin accidentally colliding with T.J. Oshie; they were both fine, though the concussion spotters pulled Ovi from the game for precautionary reasons. He returned just in time for a power play late in the period. The Capitals scored on that power play, with Nicklas Backstrom getting the tip in front. But the Leafs tied it up forty-five seconds later on a Nazem Kadri goal.

Three minutes into the second, Ovechkin ripped home a rocket to send the Capitals up 2-1. That goal would tie him with the great Sergei Federov for most points ever by a Russian player. They kept the lead for much of the period, but lost it about ten minutes later when Nikita Zaitsev scored from the point to tie the game 2-2. And then a few minutes later, the Caps took a penalty, Auston Matthews scored on the power play, and the lead was gone.

Things did not get better in the third period. Kadri scored two more times, securing his hat trick. Matt Niskanen scored from the point with just a few minutes left to make up a little more ground, but it was moot at that point. Mitch Marner scored an empty netter, and the Leafs won, 6-3.

The Caps outshot the Leafs 44-37, but were schooled on faceoffs, winning only 35.6%. Each team went 1/1 on the power play. Braden Holtby saved 31/36 shots.

The Caps looked good during the first half of this game, almost like a functioning hockey team again. But they just couldn’t hang on. They’ve lost seven in a row, and the All-Star break/bye week could not have come at a better time. Everyone will have a chance to get refreshed and then come back stronger in just over a week’s time.

What’s Going on in the World of the Caps

All-Star Weekend

This weekend was All-Star Weekend in San Jose, and John Carlson, Braden Holtby, and Todd Reirden were there representing the Capitals. At the Skills Competition, Holtby took part in the Save Streak challenge, and Carlson took part in the hardest shot. Carlson won the Hardest Shot, taking home the winning prize with a 102.8 mph rocket, beating the speed at which Alex Ovechkin won the event last year. In the All-Star game, they helped the Metropolitan division to victory. Holtby tallied the victory in the semi-final against the Atlantic and made numerous great saves. Carlson, on a line with Sebastian Aho and Claude Giroux, tallied one assist on a Giroux goal. The Metro division split the million-dollar prize, and the Caps brought home the victory.

The Oshies and Alzners went to Disney World together

The Capitals and their families all went off to different places for their bye week vacations, but the most notable was the Oshies, who reunited with former Capital Karl Alzner and his family and went to Disney World together. (x)

Christian Djoos skates

Christian Djoos continues to make progress. On Tuesday morning, Djoos took to optional skate in the light blue non-contact jersey. Still no timetable for his return. (x)

Upcoming Bye Week

The Capitals still have about half of their bye week; they do not return to play until Friday, February 1. And when that happens, they will not have the services of Alex Ovechkin, who will be suspended a game for skipping the All-Star game.

Player of the Week

The Caps may not have gotten any wins, but they sure did score some goals. Alex Ovechkin led the pack in that category, scoring 4 goals in the two games, including a hat trick. He tallied 5 points total on the week, tied for the team lead.

Social Media Post of the Week

The Caps dispersed for their bye-week vacations, and a number of them went off together (the Connollys, Jakub Vrana, Tom and Taylor, and Andre Burakovsky). Taylor posted a picture of her and Tom, Tom’s brother and his partner, and Andre. We will never know whether it is Taylor or Andre who is the fifth wheel. (x)

Polanco Walks It Off Again For The Twins!

Indians 4 Twins 5 W-Thielbar (5-0) L-Wittgren (2-6)

The Minnesota Twins have played some better baseball as they have taken three series from first place teams. Tonight, the Cleveland Indians came to town for a divisional showdown. The Twins started the scoring when Max Kepler smacked a Cal Quantrill fastball out to right for a lead-off homer. This put the Twins up by a run after an inning of play. The Indians answered in the second as Franmil Reyes led-off with a walk. Bradley Zimmer crushed a Griffin Jax fastball out to center for a two-run homer and the Tribe took a 2-1 lead. The Twins got back to work in the third. With one out, Jorge Polanco reached on a fielder’s choice and Josh Donaldson dumped a single into center field. Polanco raced around the bases and beat the relay throw to tie the game up at two apiece. The Twins kept adding on in the fourth. Jake Cave led-off with a double and Ryan Jeffers was hit by a pitch. With one out, Max Kepler hit into a RBI fielder’s choice and the Twins took the lead back. The Indians responded in the fifth when Amed Rosario lined a double to center. Jake Cave misplayed the ball and Rosario gained third base. Jose Ramirez followed and lined a run-scoring single to right and we were tied at three all. The see-saw game continued in the sixth. Owen Miller reached on an error by Andrelton Simmons and Andres Gimenez walked. With two outs, Austin Hedges plated a run on a base hit to left, but Gimenez was out at home plate to end the inning. Ryan Jeffers came right back for the Twins when he belted a Justin Garza cutter out to left-center for a solo blast. This tied the game up at four after six frames. The bullpens settled the dust and extra innings were needed tonight. Caleb Thielbar threw up a zero in the tenth and the Twins made things interesting in the bottom of the inning. Ryan Jeffers started the tenth at second base and Nick Gordon lined a single to center. Max Kepler was intentionally walked, but Rob Refsnyder hit into a double play, which retired the two lead runners. The next batter, Jorge Polanco came through again as he lined a double to right, which scored Max Kepler to win the game. The Twins got their second walk-off win in a row and are playing some good baseball now.

-Final Thoughts- Griffin Jax got through some rough spots, but had a nice start. He went six innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts. John Gant struck out two in a clean seventh, Juan Minaya had a hitless eighth, and Alex Colome put up a zero in the ninth. Caleb Thielbar fanned two in the tenth to pick up the win. Josh Donaldson led the way with three hits on the night. Jorge Polanco and Luis Arraez added two hits each on a fun night. The Twins hit 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left fifteen men on base. Trevor Larnach was sent to St. Paul and Nick Gordon was recalled. It will be interesting to see if Nick Gordon plays elsewhere besides second, short, or center. He tried to play some left field and even a little third base in St. Paul. Tomorrow, Eli Morgan faces Bailey Ober in Game 2.

Dance was something I always wanted to do. I was introduced to it while in primary and high school. So on leaving high school and while at University, I joined the Watoto church choir as my ministry and often looked on with envy at the select few who got to dance for God. A desire burnt in my heart to express my worship to God in form of dance. I waited patiently hoping that one day such opportunity would present itself.

There were various church dance groups at the time but I was not drawn to them for whatever reason; I guess I just didn’t belong there. My first opportunity came with the 2008 Watoto Conference; my sister Karen H. Kimuli who was in choir told me of an opportunity she had heard of to dance at the conference. Needless to say, I was overjoyed at the opportunity and took it without looking back, so much that at the first practice I showed up in my work clothes, a pink shirt and black almost A-line skirt not knowing that one needed dance clothes. More interesting was the fact that I did not have any dance clothes in my wardrobe. Of course this did not deter me. While experiencing this opportunity, I met with Merian Mwase who desired perfection and pushed us to the very end in order to deliver excellence as one of our church core values.

At the conference, the less than 10 minutes of performance were worth every minute spent in rigorous practice for the past two weeks. I blossomed the entire time; I can still remember the movements of the larakaraka piece. The ladies who did Bakisimba dance were Karen H. Kimuli, Norah and Hellen (a lady who passed on a few years ago) and we who did Larakaraka were Gyda Oyenbot, Cissy and myself. We were honoured to be part of this.

After the conference, I was basically elated hungrily looking for the next opportunity to dance which was not so forthcoming until there was an announcement to join an upcoming dance ministry under Watoto Worship. the ministry is what later became CLAY Dance Company, or CLAY as many have come to know it over the years. As it was announced on the Church news, I could feel my whole body and spirit move in excitement at the long awaited opportunity to finally dance; just the thought of it now brings back very fond memories. I told all that I could master the courage to tell that I would be going for the auditions.

Audition day came and by then I had acquired a few clothes that could pass for dance clothes. I walked into the audition knowing that my most known or comfortable genre was traditional dance so I was not sure what to expect. We started with a contemporary piece to the Barlow girl song One more round which all of us were to learn as taught by Andre one of our international friends who we have met along the way; and thereafter each of us would do a solo in the genre of our comfort. I can assure you I didn’t clearly see how to do the traditional so I opted for salsa and some contemporary movement I think. Our judges for this audition were Andre, Merian Mwase and Catherine Nakawesa. I got a call back thereafter and most of it is history by now.

After some time, a showcase was organized and we really gave it our all in preparation. The other dancers who got a call back as far as I can recall were; Cmo Atuha, Aziza Shirazi, Florence Ndagire Senyonjo, Linda Mpanga, Louis Snappy, Nicholas, Barbara Nayiga, Arthur Mwanje, Joanne Buganda, Jasmine Namjua, Ernest Wolf, Jacque Tumusiime and others I may not readily recall. Some few joined us thereafter as time went on. We staged the showcase under the direction of Merian Mwase, Catherine Nakawesa, Andre, and some other external instructors from Break Dance Project Uganda and traditional dancers such as Sylvia. We also had input from teachers like Nancy Kacungira, Samuel Lutaaya and Jessica among others. The input was great and we were learning what it meant to dance, choreograph and go beyond bounds to learn dance besides what we knew and were comfortable with.

The showcase happened. What was appalling was the impact on watching our video of the showcase. Most of our jaws dropped because the energy we felt we were exuding was almost 80% less on the video recorded. We felt disappointed and the energy we had come with to watch the video dwindled by the minute. Catherine and Merian, our pioneers, had to give us a pep talk so that we could be encouraged to continue pursuing our dream of dance and ministry. I can’t help but laugh looking back at that moment at church, when we were so miserable thinking we had disappointed our enthusiasts including my Aunt Apophia, my sister Karen and my brother Edgar who had shown up among others and packed Watoto Church Downtown auditorium. One of the first lessons we learnt was that what you deliver on stage has to be about 200% of what you think you are actually delivering and that the level of energy you deliver in practice is what will flow through on show day

Watoto Conference 2010 found us already charged and was yet another opportunity to perform and tell the Watoto Children’s story alongside them in dance and drama. It didn’t leave us the same. Through the same interaction with CLAY Dance Company, an opportunity presented itself to go to Ecole des Sables in Senegal. I was blessed to share this with Catherine Nakawesa and I was glad to have her on board because I am not the adventurous kind but walking this journey beside her away from home always felt like home. I learnt and grew a lot. The Artistic Director Patrick Acogny once told us that we will not be the same once we came back to our countries. That after 2 months away, the growth would be evident. I could write a book on the whole experience; it was nothing short of amazing.

Through the years, CLAY Dance Company has interacted with teachers from all walks of life, different countries and genres. God has gifted us that way. When we started out as CLAY Dance Company, what we see now and the hundreds of dancers that we have interacted with leaves us awe struck at what God has done amongst us. As CLAY Dance Company started to grow, various disciplines were groomed amongst us including; whoever arrived first for practice had to make sure the dance space was mopped and clean, not wearing any form of jewellery during practice to prevent accidents, hugging and greeting everyone and inquiring as to their welfare before practice started, not talking or having non dance discussions during practice, Paying attention to whoever is in charge of the class session, practice being closed and fun clubs not being entertained during practice, everyone should be in position to learn whatever is taught for the day and so much more.

In the growth of the Company, many more practices have been incorporated and embraced such as intentionally reading the word, reaching out to the community of other dancers and so much more. Our leaders have also taken gifting to another level. They have purposed every year end in the Christmas season as we remember the birth of Jesus Christ to give Christmas cards and gifts to the members who have been part of the journey throughout the year including the teachers, dancers and visitors, which is heartwarming. How can I conclude without making mention of the culture of photography. We love to take photographs in and out of season. We are always ready for a photo and I am sure our archives will speak for themselves.

CLAY Dance Company has not been a place void of struggles, tears and disgruntlement. These have been present in every phase but these have made us stronger in character, personality and resilience. It is never easy when you have multitudes of talent in one space and a few less opportunities like a small stage and limited time; CLAY Dance has managed and still tries to work through these phases while still growing and grooming the next generation of dancers. I have written a lot and feel like there is so much more I could put to paper. Maybe one day I will write a book on my life in CLAY Dance Company. So as a CLAY Ancestor (proudly so) I am grateful and honoured to have this family which I saw as a baby and now see as a ten year old. It is amazing, awesome, loved and so much more in one bundle of joy.

All in all, CLAY Dance Company was and still is a dream come true for me. It was a breath of fresh air at the time I needed it and it continues in this stance. I thank God. The very essence of the life of a dancer in our dance; CLAY Dance Company. Discover. Develop. Belong.
