The Balkan Celts imitated Macedonian and Greek , Roman coinage. The Celts in the Balkans, particularly in the region of present-day Slovenia, minted coins that were heavily influenced by Greek and Macedonian designs. These coins often featured stylized depictions of horses, abstract shapes, and the portraits of Celtic chiefs. The Celts also adopted inscriptions from Roman coins, using abbreviated names of chiefs and regional capitals.
🌴- Copying Greek designs: Initially, Celtic coins imitated Greek designs, especially those of Philip II of Macedon and his son Alexander the Great. They retained Greek subjects like the head of Apollo but developed their own style from that basis, creating a Graeco-Celtic synthesis.
🌴- Adding Celtic elements: Over time, Celtic engravers incorporated their own unique elements, such as stylized horses, abstract shapes, and portraits of Celtic chiefs. They also added small Celtic details to Greek designs, like tattoos on the cheek of Zeus.
🌴- Symbolic designs: As the period progressed, Celtic coins became more symbolic, featuring motifs like giants, horsemen, gods, skulls, and chariot wheels. These designs were often abstract and open to interpretation, reflecting the Celtic emphasis on symbolism and mysticism.
🌴- Roman influence: After the Gallic War, Roman influence became more prominent, and Celtic coins began to incorporate Roman designs and inscriptions. However, the Celts adapted these elements to fit their own style, often using them to boast about their economic prowess and tribal achievements.
By combining these elements, the #Celts created a distinctive style that blended Greek and Roman influences with their own cultural and artistic traditions.

The use of hippocampus on coins
-Greek Civilization:
In Greek mythology, the hippocampus was often associated with Poseidon, the god of the sea, earthquakes, and horses. Poseidon was said to ride a chariot drawn by hippocampi, which symbolized his dominion over both land and sea. The hippocampus also appeared in ancient Greek art, particularly in pottery and mosaics, where it was depicted as a graceful and powerful creature. These representations often emphasized its role as a creature of the sea, embodying both the beauty and the danger of the ocean.
-Phoenician Civilization:
The Phoenicians, a seafaring people known for their trade and maritime prowess, also featured the hippocampus in their art and mythology. The hippocampus in Phoenician culture symbolized their connection to the sea, which was central to their economy and way of life. The creature was depicted in Phoenician art, particularly in the form of amulets, seals, and decorative items, serving as a protective symbol for sailors and merchants.
-Roman Civilization:
In Roman culture, the hippocampus continued to be associated with the sea and was often linked to Neptune, the Roman equivalent of the Greek Poseidon. The Romans adopted and adapted much of #Greek_mythology , so the #hippocampus retained its significance as a creature of the sea. It appeared in Roman mosaics, sculptures, and other artworks, often in scenes depicting marine life or the gods of the ocean. The hippocampus also symbolized power and strength, qualities that were highly valued in Roman society.
In all these civilizations, the hippocampus served as a powerful symbol of the sea, embodying the duality of beauty and danger, as well as the connection between the human and the divine. #archaeology #ancient #ancienthistory #museum #numismatics #numismatist #numismatica #rarecoins #oldcoins #worldcoins

Gold medallion for Constantius I, Minted in: Trier (Germany: Rhineland-Palatinate ) AD 296, Weight: 26.84 gram. on obverse, Bust representing Constantius I, right, wearing lion-skin headdress. , Inscription content: FL VAL CONSTANTIVS NOBILISSIMVS C. On reverse , Constantius standing right, raising Britannia, left, from her knees; Victory standing, right, behind emperor, crowning him with a wreath. Inscription content: PIETAS AVGG
And reverse exergue PTR.
Ref. https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/C_1928-0208-2
The reverse of this five-aureus piece commemorates the reconquest of Britain by Constantius in AD 296.
On the obverse Constantius assumes the guise of Hercules, his divine patron. In Tetrarchic ideology the western emperors were assigned the divine patronage of Hercules while the eastern were assigned #Jupiter. Hence the proliferation of coin reverses honouring Hercules and Jupiter as guardian gods or conservatores. This arrangement reflected the relationship of #Diocletian to his colleagues; he retained legislative control of the empire while his colleagues undertook heroic labours on his behalf.
The reverse legend emphasises the pious duty of the emperors (the plural signified by the double G) in helping such a beleaguered province.

Gallienus (218–268 CE) was the 41st Emperor of Rome, ruling from 253 to 268 CE. During his reign, the Roman Empire faced lots of issues , including the loss of major provinces such as #Britain and #Gaul . which seceded under the leadership of the general #Postumus . #Gallienus attempted military reforms and fought against various usurpers but struggled to maintain control amid external invasions and internal revolts. His reign ended when he was assassinated by his own officers during a siege in #Milan .
Gallienus issued a variety of coins during his reign, primarily the billon antoninianus. These coins often featured his portrait and various deities, serving as both currency and propaganda to bolster troop morale. The imperial mint followed Gallienus during military campaigns to produce necessary coins, depicting themes of victory and celebrating military achievements. Notably, about 40 rare gold coins of Gallienus were discovered in the #Lava_Treasure in #Corsica in the 1980s, highlighting his monetary legacy.
