Oh, Baby, Meet Me In The New Year
To say that New Year’s Eve is a shit show is the biggest understatement of the year, and yes, that includes the whole tsunami thing.
Buck rips his helmet off as he stumbles into the firehouse, his legs heavy like lead pillars as he trudges into the locker room. Beside him, Eddie drops onto the bench, his head hung low as he checks his phone. Christopher’s bright smile flashes across the screen as Eddie scrolls through the photos Carla must have sent him, and Buck sighs.
He loves being a firefighter. Loves helping people and saving lives. It gives him a purpose bigger than just him, and on any other day, he’d work tirelessly without complaint. But tonight is New Years Eve, and he and Eddie had plans to spend it bringing in 2020 with Chris.
Alas, party animals and house fires from errant fireworks have no regard for Buck and Eddie and Christopher’s NYE plans. When both their phones chirped with Cap’s emergency texts, all three of them groaned.
Hen hangs up her jacket before bending over to tie her shoes, her movements sluggish. What’s the point of even getting out of their gear? If the rest of the night continues like it has been, they’ll be getting another call really soon.
The alarm blares, and Hen groans loudly before reaching for her jacket again. Maybe he jinxed it, or maybe he’s actually clairvoyant. Shit. Buck pats her shoulder, then takes Eddie by the elbow and helps him to his feet before the three of them file out toward the fire engine.
“All right, everyone, look sharp,” Cap shouts over the blaring alarm, and Buck wonders if the man’s really half machine. How’s he so chirpy when he’s half way through a double shift? Is there some super sonic ultra coffee he’s sipping in his office that he’s not sharing with the rest of the team? “We got a PNB at a party downtown.”
“Pulseless non-breather. My favourite,” Chim says with as much enthusiasm as he can muster, which is to say, not a whole lot, and Buck doesn’t even have the energy to mutter “mood.”
They pile into the truck, and Cap takes the wheel. With the sirens blaring and lights flashing, they pull through the engine bay doors for what feels like the millionth time tonight. Eddie sits across from Buck and presses his knees against Buck’s. They share a tired smile, and Buck points at Eddie’s pocket with an expectant tilt of his chin.
Eddie blinks for a second, then understanding dawns on him and he pulls his phone from his pocket. He passes it to Buck, and a little spark of warmth spreads from Buck’s chest as he unlocks the screen. Yup, that’s right, Eddie “I don’t trust anyone with anything” Diaz trusts Buck with his phone password.
Buck flips through the photos Carla sent. In one Christopher is stuffing his face with a cupcake, in another he’s got he’s smiling with slitted eyes getting too damn close to the camera. The last one is Christopher holding up a drawing of two men in what looks like Picaso’s version of firefighter uniforms, and a little boy with crutches standing between them. The three of them are holding hands, and there’s fireworks going off in the background.
Buck’s eyes sting, and he quickly turns off the screen before the sting turns into tears. Christopher is a goddamn gift, and anyone who thinks otherwise can fight him.
He hands the phone back to Eddie, and they share a knowing look. Eddie’s knees squeeze Buck’s, and the delicious pressure conveys everything words doesn’t as they take a sharp turn and squeal to a stop.
Eddie, Buck, and Cap hop out of the truck just as Hen and Chim rush past them, their emergency bus parked right behind the fire engine. There’s a small crowd under the neon sign of the club, and Hen pushes her way to the front, her fatigue forgotten as she crouches beside a young man on the ground.
“He just stumbled out and collapsed,” a young woman in a short slinky dress says, her voice high-pitched with panic. “He looked dead and he wasn’t breathing. I didn’t know what else to do.”
“You’re the one who called 9-1-1?” Buck glances at the phone clutched in her manicured hands.
“Yeah.”
“You did everything you could,” he reassures her and squeezes her shoulder. “We’ll take over from here.”
Hen checks the man’s airway, then moves back as Chim presses a mask over his mouth and nose. Buck knows the drill like he knows the back of his own eyelids. Two breathes, compression, check, repeat. This is the third PNB tonight, and they already had two cases of alcohol poisoning before ten pm. Buck appreciates a good party as much as the next guy, but this is getting a little ridiculous.
He and Eddie are on crowd control as Cap, Chim, and Hen bring the young man around. Eventually, he sputters and rolls over and vomits all over the concrete sidewalk, and that breaks up the crowd of lookie-loos.
They help get the man onto a gurney and into the bus. Hen and Chim rush off toward the hospital, and Buck has one foot on the truck when movement in the corner of his eye gives him pause. He turns, and dread pool icy cold in his stomach.
Halfway down the block, a group of rowdy drunkards shove a very, very pregnant lady out of the way. Buck watches, frozen in time, as she trips and falls, spilling the contents of the plastic bag hanging on her arm.
Buck curses and runs toward her, shoulder checking the group of drunk men as he pushes through them. One guy makes a grab for him, but his gruff shout of “hey asshole” turns sharp and breathy as he yelps in pain. Buck glances over his shoulder and smirks with satisfaction; Cap’s got the asshole’s wrist in a vise grip as the rest of the group swerves out of the way. Serves him right.
The satisfaction is short lived as he skids to a stop on his knees beside the pregnant lady, who’s gasping in pain as she clutches at her extremely round stomach.
“Ma’am, ma’am—”
“Do I look like a goddamn ma’am to you?” the woman spits through gritted teeth.
Buck scoffs, but doesn’t fight her on it. “My name is Evan Buckley. I’m with the LAPD. Can you get up?”
She tries, then grimaces and falls back on her butt as her whole body curls in on itself. She shuts her eyes and breathes in through her nose and out through her mouth as if she’s done this before.
“I…” she says, her voice strained. “I think I’m going into labour.”
Buck’s swallows as breathing becomes difficult, and he looks up at Eddie and Cap, who are standing a few feet away.
“We’ll get you to the hospital as soon as possible—”
“No,” she gasps, “no you don’t understand. This is my third. When I say the kid’s coming, she’s fucking comi—oh fuck.” She squeezes Buck’s hand as a contraction wracks through her, and Buck tries to ignore the way his bones shift in her grip. It’s a long, agonizing God-knows-how-long before she lets go and says, “Should’ve known better than to wonder around this late at night.”
“What were you doing out this late anyway?” Buck asks as Cap and Eddie spread a blanket on the cold, concrete sidewalk.
“Had a craving for fried chicken,” she responds sheepishly and shuffles onto the blanket just in time for another contraction to hit.
Once over, and she lets go of Buck’s poor, cramped hand, she brushes a strand of hair from her sweaty brow and smiles at him. “I’m Lauren, by the way. Evan, was it?”
“You can call me Buck.”
“Buck, huh.” She purses her lips and tests the name a couple times. “I like it. Maybe I’ll name my kid after you, Buck.”
Buck looks horrified. “I thought you said it’s a girl?”
She grins and opens her mouth, but before she could respond, her face screws up and she lets out a string of curses as her hand wraps around Buck’s once more in a death grip. They don’t talk after that, with the contractions coming on fast and furious and if this goes on any longer he’s going to need a cast for his hand. Cap and Eddie talk her through it, but the lady knows what she’s doing. This is her third, after all.
Another small crowd forms around them. Cap looks up from between her splayed legs and says, “Pus—”
“Fuck, she’s coming,” Lauren shouts.
Buck moves without thinking. Moves because every muscle in his body is trained to react. He reaches under her leg just as a soft head appears, and he catches the baby before the rest of her slides out. Lauren’s sharp cry turns into an exhausted gasp, then she collapses onto the ground.
A thin, shrill cry erupts from the tiny little thing in Buck’s arms, and Buck wants to cry, too, with joy. He looks to Lauren, then freezes when he sees the pool of red beneath her. There’s so much blood. Too much blood. And Cap throws a bundle of blankets at Buck before shoving him and the baby out of the way. There’s shouting behind him. Hen and Chim come flying through with their duffles and life-saving equipment.
Buck cleans the baby as best as he can, then wraps her up and sits on his ass as he watches, helpless. Lauren is awake, and she’s looking at her baby with so much love it brings more tears to Buck’s eyes. The world swims around the edges, and Buck clears his throat and snaps out of his stupor as he gingerly scooches over to Lauren.
“She’s beautiful,” he croaks.
She reaches for her baby, and he hands her over, blood and mucus and all, and something in his chest bursts with so much warmth and hope and joy. Beside him, Cap pats his shoulder, mutters a “well done, son” before pushing to his feet. Buck swallows and tries to follow, but his legs don’t work, so he resigns to sitting on the cold concrete until Chim and Hen has Lauren and her baby up on a gurney.
The crowd around them are chanting something, but Buck can’t make out the words as he watches Lauren and the baby get wheeled into the bus. She waves at him, and he waves back, dazed.
A soft finger brushes Buck’s jaw, and he turns to the gentle touch to find Eddie’s honey brown eyes trained on him. His face is bathed in shifting colours, and there’s cheering all around them. Eddie’s jacket is covered in blood, his forehead damp with sweat, and there’s a small smear of dirt on the tip of his nose. He looks like a fucking mess, and Buck wouldn’t have him any other way.
Eddie smiles that lopsided smile of his and chuckles. “What a way to bring in the new year, huh?”
Buck blinks. “What?”
“Did you miss the countdown?”
“Incase you didn’t notice, I was a little preoccupied,” Buck huffs indignantly.
Eddie’s eyes soften, and his smile loses its playful mockery. “Yeah, you were busy falling in love.”
Buck’s instinct was to deny it, but the sincere look in Eddie’s eyes stops him. “I was, a little, wasn’t I?”
“Maybe, in the future when we’re more...you know, ready…” Eddie worries at his bottom lip as a faint blush colours the apples of his cheeks. “We can adopt a little girl. Chris has always wanted a little sister.”
Buck stares at Eddie, and the implications of his words, the hidden meaning between the lines, knocks the breath out of him. “Are you? Is that a—because if you’re fucking with me right now, Edmundo Diaz, I’m going to fucking kick your ass.”
“Fuck, Ev, yes.” Eddie laughs and gets down on one knee. He pulls a little velvet box from his pocket and pops it open, revealing a simple silver band. “Evan Buckley, the source of all my migraines, the devil on my son’s shoulder, the man who fills my waking thoughts and plagues my dreams, the man who stole my heart and keeps it safe, who’s always got my back. You are the love of my life, the pillar that holds me up and gives me strength, will you make me the happiest man and do me the honour of becoming my husband?”
The crowd around them quiets even as the fireworks continue to shower psychedelic lights over the streets of LA. Eddie’s earnest face is open, vulnerable, so full of sincerity and love. And all that is because of Buck. For Buck, and the tiny little “yes” tumbles from his lips so fast he can hardly catch his breath. Eddie’s shoulders sag and he lets out a relieved chuckle, then scrambles back onto his feet and slips the ring on Buck’s finger.
They stand forehead to forehead with grime and muck and blood and who knows what else stuck on their uniforms, and seal the deal with a searing kiss.

Scarlet Briar: The Redemption of Ceara Chapter 11
Written by: Braxxus
Chapter 11: It’s All Going To Be Ok
Sometimes help is right in front of us
East of Sanctum Harbor in the ruins of Fort Mariner, Guardsman Taranis was going about his daily routine of going over documents concerning the cleanup effort of Lion’s Arch.
“Sir, we have an issue in the harbor.” A member of the Lionguard spoke entering the tent, saluting him. Taranis looked up at him, a concerned look on his face. He already knew what was happening.
“What is it?” he asked anyway.
“There is some kind of energy spire, for lack of a better term, erupting from the water. It looks to be from the same area Scarlet’s drill machine breached the bottom of the harbor.
     “Scarlet…” Taranis said to himself.
     “Sir?”
Taranis took a deep breath. “Get some of the Priory brainiacs to check it out. See what they can find. Then report back to me immediately.”
“Yes sir.” The soldier saluted and ran from the tent. Taranis stepped out into the morning sun and looked out over the fort ruins. Slowly he looked at the ground before him.
“I…I understand.” He muttered. He sighed and returned to his desk. Sitting, he pulled a blank sheet of parchment in front of him, grabbed a quill and ink bottle and started writing.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Amaranda stood on a beach, looking out over the calm water before her. A light breeze blew past her.  She was in the Dream, in a place familiar to her.
“She is a fragile flower.” a voice spoke lightly echoing through the air. “Though she looks strong against the breeze, that strength hides a fragility that must be cared for, for even the slightest faltering can cause it to lose its petals and whither.”
     “Yes, mother.”
“She may not be the monster she once was, but there in resides a brokenness that will take much time to heal.” Another voice spoke behind her.
Amaranda turned, looking over her shoulder. “Ventari…” she gasped. The ghostly image of the aged centaur walking slowly towards her. He stood beside her and looked out over the water.
“Her mind has been trampled upon, stripped bare and used without her control.” He turned to her. “Amaranda the Lonesome. She has come to trust you. Should she falter, you must be her rock, her foundation. The pillar which she leans upon when she struggles to carry the weight on her shoulders.” Amaranda stared at him for a moment, then nodded.
“Now, the time is approaching.” He tapped his staff against the ground, sending out a low rumbling that echoed through the air. Amaranda snapped awake. She was laying on the floor of the small room in the lab. She checked the bed for Ceara, but it was empty.
“Oh, no…” she got up and hurried from the room.  Rushing into the lab, she found Ceara dressed in her armor, packing various small devices into different satchels. The two Asura were there as well standing quietly nearby, looking on.
“Ceara!? What are you doing!?” Amaranda asked sternly, but somewhat confused. Ceara didn’t answer her, seemingly ignoring her. “Ceara!?” Amaranda asked again, rushing over and grabbing Ceara’s arm.
“What does it look like? I’m leaving to go face that thing.” Ceara replied without looking at her.
“Not without us. We’re going to help!” Amaranda said.
“No…no you aren’t.” Ceara replied sternly. “You three are staying here. It’s me, she wants. Not you. If you go, she’ll kill all of you.”
“You don’t know that. We can stop her. All of us together. You don’t have to go alone.” Amaranda looked at her. “Mother wants to see you…”
Ceara closed her eyes. “Mother?” she said under her breath, a slight hint of disgust in her voice. She turned to Amaranda. “Tell her I’m ok.”
     “Don’t do this.” Amaranda pleaded.
     “I have to.”
“There are other paths. The road doesn’t have to end this way!” Amaranda continued to plead. Ceara pulled her arm away and stepped away from her. “Mother weeps for you.” Amaranda paused. “I was happy to have you back, I was happy to call you sister…” Amaranda said, her voice choking as she turned away from Ceara, covering her face to hide the tears that were starting to form. Ceara paused, looking at the floor. Her chest was heavy.
“I’m sorry.” She said, taking a deep breath holding back a tear that was forming in her own eye. She activated the waypoint transporter and disappeared from the lab. Silence filled the room, save for the random beep and low hum of some machinery.
“She left the rifle.” Shikijo whispered.
“Yeah but look. There’s something attached to it.” Joujou said quietly, pointing to the stock of the weapon. The duo looked at the small disc shaped device, two blue lights blinking in sequence.
“What is it?” he asked. “Looks like some kind of tracking device?”
“And look over there. The same devices attached to those brand crystals.” The duo looked inquisitively at each other.
“What are we going to do? We can’t just let her go fight that thing alone!” Amaranda whimpered.
“We aren’t.” Joujou stated matter of factly. “We’re going after her. She’s not the only one with a waypoint transporter.”
Amaranda looked at the duo. “How do we find out where she went?”
“Easy!” Shikijo responded upbeat. “We know that ghostie is going to do something in Lion’s Arch, so it’s an easy guess that your sis went there. All we have to do is access the waypoint network and find out which one received a transport signal within the past few minutes.” He walked to a terminal and started typing on the floating keyboard. Amaranda watched as a bunch of random numbers and information displayed rapidly across the screen. After a few moments it stopped. Shikijo touched one key and a partial map of Tyria appeared. A small blip was flashing in Lion’s Arch.
“There.” Joujou said, pointing at it. “She ported to the southwestern part of the harbor.”
“The south part of the city. Can we get there now?” Amaranda asked.
“We’ll need to gather some gear and then we can be on our way.” Joujou replied.
      Amaranda responded ecstatically “Please hurry!”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scarlet hovered in the air above the wreckage of the Breachmaker, the trail of leyline energy streaming behind her. Focusing, she held her hands above her, energy crackling around her body.
“And now it’s time…” she smiled. Moments passed but nothing was happening. She looked at her hands for a moment, a puzzled look on her face before reaching out again. Still nothing. “What is wrong!?” she asked out loud. She concentrated, focusing her mind again, reaching towards the sky above her. It felt as if something was fighting against her. After a few moments the air above her seemed to stir. She focused her mind, concentrating harder until a tear seemed to appear before her. She started laughing, trying to contain her excitement. The rift slowly opened wider allowing her to see the Mists on the other side. She could feel the energy starting to seep through, slowly flowing towards her. She felt a sensation as the two energies started to mix within her ghostly body, a power of which she had never dreamed. She brought her hands back down to her, looking at her palms. She was glowing brighter than ever. She closed her eyes and focused.  She felt every bit of her being go numb as she gasped for air. Opening her eyes, she looked at her hands again. She was no longer glowing. Her body was solid, her hands shaking.
“It…it worked…” she gasped looking down at her new body. She started laughing to herself, stopping abrupty. “She’s here…” She looked over her shoulder to see Ceara standing on the cliff not far away. “She came home…” Scarlet slowly floated down to Ceara, the two staring at each other for what seemed for hours.
“Well, how do I look…sister…?” Scarlet asked somewhat snidely. She slowly turned in the air, before looking at Ceara, somewhat menacingly.
“Do you know what you are doing?” Ceara asked.
Scarlet was slightly dumbfounded by the question. “What a silly question to ask. Of course, I do. You do as well. Remember, we are one and the same.”
“No…we are not. You aren’t a part of me.” Ceara spat at her. “You’re a part of that jungle dragon!”
Scarlet closed her eyes and chuckled to herself. “Believe what you will…Scarlet…Briar.” Her voice resonating a hint of the same voice Ceara heard when she saw the Eternal Alchemy. The voice of the jungle dragon. “I am a part of you. Just as a part of me resides within all Sylvari.”
“You realize that combining all this energy together could destroy this whole section of Tyria? You do know that, right?”
Scarlet tilted her head in disbelief. “Am I…am I hearing sympathy for Tyria…from you? You of all people. Did that seer mess with your head? Have you forgotten what you have done over the past year?
“That was not me. That was you. You made me do those things.” Ceara replied sternly.
“Oh no no…” Scarlet quipped shaking her finger at Ceara. “You were the one that planned out everything…that designed every-“ Scarlet was cut short by a loud pop and a searing pain in her left shoulder. She slowly looked down to see black ichorous fluid oozing from a hole in her shoulder. Tiny bolts of electricity arced over her shoulder and down her arm. She looked back at Ceara who was holding a small pistol.
“You…you shot me!?” she said in disbelief, somewhat mortified.
A thorned vine suddenly shot past Ceara, grazing the side of her head. Shocked, she looked back at Scarlet who was looking at her with a severe disgusted look on her face.
“Well, it’s a shame really. I was aiming for your head…” Ceara sneered, looking at the pirate woman’s pistol with disappointment. “I guess I should have check to see of the barrel was straiiiAAAHHH!!” In an instant, she was pulled off the ground, strung up by vines. Scarlet marched up to her, grabbing the pistol from her hand, crushing it.
“Well, what other toys do you have!?” Scarlet growled at Ceara. She ripped the holster from her Ceara’s hip and crushed the aetherblade pistol within it in her hand. She then looked at the gauntlet on Ceara’s right arm.
“That thing…” she sneered. Grabbing it, she crushed it and tore it from Ceara’s arm. She grabbed the armored shoulder plate on Ceara’s right shoulder and ripped it off as well. She narrowed her eyes and held up a hand. A vine sprouted from the ground and wrapped around the pack on Ceara’s back, ripping it from her body. Scarlet motioned and the vine turned towards her, bringing the power pack in front of her. Scarlet grabbed it, digging her thorned fingers into the outer casing, tearing the cover off, revealing the leyline power cells inside. Scarlet looked at them for a moment, then up at Ceara.
“I seem to remember there being three of them in here, not two.” Scarlet said inquisitively, holding the pair of cells up in front of her.
“Well, you see, I was bored last night so I used one to power a little pleasurable toy for myself.” Ceara said sarcastically, a wide smile on her face. Scarlet looked at her somewhat dumbfounded for a moment.
“I guess Lord Faren still isn’t available.” She hissed before absorbing the energy of the cells into herself, casting the empty casings over the cliff.
“Well, he is rich, you know. He has women hanging all over him.”
“Mmhmm…maybe if you had kept your roses, he might have been attracted to you. Should I cut the other one off as well so at least you’re even on both sides?”
“Cut the other…?” Ceara looked on the ground to see the remains of one the stalks from her head mangled by the thorn vine that swept past her. “It’ll grow back.” Ceara said, a half smile on her face.
“I was hoping to return home…” Scarlet spoke as she approached Ceara. “To you…” she whispered as she caressed Ceara’s chin. Ceara sneered slightly at her before spitting at her face.
“You dare…” Scarlet growled, wiping her chin. She raked her thorn tipped fingers across Ceara’s face, slicing open her skin. Ceara watched as similar wounds appeared on Scarlet’s face, the same black fluid seeping from the them. Scarlet paused a moment, bringing her hand up and slowly wiping her cheek. She stared at the fluid on her fingers, rubbing them together before looking at Ceara.
“We are still connected…” she whispered, smiling at Ceara. She noticed the hole in Ceara’s bodice where she had been stabbed by the Pact Commander. “Memories.” She whispered as she stuck her finger through the hole, the ice-cold touch against Ceara’s skin cause her to lightly gasp. “You were at death’s door that day.  That is why I left you. But it seems I made an error in judgement. Somehow, you survived. Nine lives, I suppose.”
“You left because your ‘daddy’ cut you off.” Ceara remarked snidely. “You would have ceased to exist. That’s why you needed the Dream. You needed the energy to survive. ‘Daddy’ didn’t need you anymore.”
Scarlet sneered and turned away from Ceara. “He didn’t leave. He was awakened by you. He didn’t need YOU anymore. And myself? Now, now I have this…” gesturing at her own body. “I have no need for you anymore either, but…” she looked over her shoulder at Ceara . “I do need your intellect.”
Ceara laughed out loud. “It’s just as I thought…you’re dumb!”
Scarlet’s jaw dropped for a moment before her face turned into a sneer. “You dare mock me?”
     “Of course!”
Scarlet marched back to her and raised her hand to her face. Ceara continued to laugh. “You didn’t see it, did you? All that time you spent in my head trying to play “daddy’s favorite” you didn’t see it at all.” Ceara continued through her laughter.
Scarlet paused. “What are you talking about?”
Ceara continued to laugh under her breath. “At first I didn’t know what was happening. Wasn’t sure if I what I was doing was my own ambition or something elses. But eventually I figured it out. I knew I couldn’t stop you. I couldn’t beat you. You constantly fed off the power of the jungle dragon, getting stronger.” She paused, smiling. “I wasn’t called the ‘silver-tongued sylvari’ for nothing.”
     “Out with it!” Scarlet shouted.
“I gave in to you. Gave you all the knowledge you needed to go through with your plans. But all the while, I was pulling YOUR strings. Maneuvering you into your own downfall. You may have thought that breaching that leyline would awaken Mordremoth, but what I did was maneuver you into alerting Trahearne and his merry little army the location of the jungle dragon, without you even knowing it. Even now, the Pact is mobilizing to attack your precious ‘father’,” Ceara said, surly defiance filled her voice.
     “You lie!”
“Do I? Why don’t you go to the desert wastes of Maguuma and check for yourself?  Or you could stay here and try to open that rift-“ Ceara was cut off by Scarlet’s fingers grabbing her face.
     “Enough!” Scarlet barked.
“Scarlet Briar!” a voiced shouted behind her. She turned to see Amaranda and the two asura approaching on the cliff.
“Hm, it seems the cavalry has arrived.” Ceara muttered, seeing her breath through Scarlet’s cold fingers.
Scarlet glanced back at Ceara. “I’ll deal with you later.” She pulled her hand away from Ceara’s face slowly, dragging her thorned fingers across her cheeks, scratching Ceara’s skin. She waved her hand whimsically, causing the vines holding Ceara to sway back and forth violently before tossing Ceara over the cliff’s edge out into the water.
“No!” Amaranda screamed as Ceara disappeared over the edge.
“So, seer, little ones…there would have been a place for you in the new world to come, but you have chosen to stand against the jungle dragon. Such a shame.” Scarlet sneered.
Ceara had seconds to activate the shield device in her satchel before impacting the water below. Though the shield saved her from certain death, hitting the water still knocked the wind out of her.
“At least the water is warm.” She thought to herself, attributing the fact to the leaking leyline energy was keeping it heated. She broke the surface, drawing in a deep breath. The air at the water’s surface smelled slightly of ozone.
“She’s definitely not the brightest bulb.” Ceara drew a deep breath. “I didn’t think she would do something like that.” she muttered looking up at the cliff. “I hate to say that about myself. I could have been killed and she would not exist anymore…unless…unless that body does give her her own life now?” She swam towards a piece of wreckage from the Breachmaker. Climbing out of the water, she stood looking at the ridge.
“Thorns. I didn’t anticipate her destroying all my gear. Now that she’s preoccupied with Amee and the asura, this would have been the best chance…eh?” A soft glow in the water near the wreckage caught her eye. “Well…there you are….” She smirked to herself.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“We’re getting readings off the spire. It looks like that rift leads to the Mists and it’s mixing with the leyline energy from the breach.” Bodil said. She was a norn scholar of the Durmand Priory. She and a few others had been called in by the Lionguard to investigate the energy disturbance in the harbor. “There’s readings of other energy in the mix as well.”
“Alert. Unusual energy readings on the south cliff.” The golem with them announced.
“South cliff? What is it?” another priory member asked. The golem stepped forward and projected a hologram screen in front of it. The blurry image showed 4 figures on top of the cliff as well as some other movement.
“Can you focus in on what’s up there? Possibly get a clearer image?” Bodil asked. Scan lines went through the image numerous times before it became clear enough to see.
“Spirits…” Bodil muttered as the image showed Scarlet Briar surrounded by vines, two asura were coiled in them, held aloft from the ground. Another sylvari knelt on the ground in front of her, a vine wrapped around her neck.
“I knew it!” Lionguardsman Garanth Stonecutter exclaimed. “I knew that ghost was more than just a ghost!” He coughed.
“Well, now’s your chance to use her for target practice.” Vigil soldier Brom Silvertooth replied.
“You got that right! Let’s get up. I’m gonna send that stick back to the Mists through that rift myself for afflicting me this cough!” The duo started rushing off.
“Wait! We don’t…” Bodil shouted after them, but they weren’t listening. She sighed deeply. “Spirits protect them.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Seer, your tricks won’t work on me.” Scarlet sneered at Amaranda as she approached the struggling sylvari. Amaranda tried to attack Scarlet with her illusions, but her attack was undone before they were able to do anything. She wrapped Amaranda in vines and brought her low. Scarlet gently grasped Amaranda chin and stared down at her, looking into her eyes.
“Now, child…” Scarlet spoke, her voice a mix of her own, and something else, a deeper more foreboding tone.
“No…” Amaranda gasped, recognizing the voice as the elder jungle dragon.
“You and your dear sister will be the first. You will turn your mother tree to me.” Scarlet snarled.
“Don’t you touch her!” Shikijo yelled.
“If you hurt her, you’ll answer to us!” Joujou added, as they both struggled against the vines that were holding them.
“Asura…” Scarlet growled. Your time will-“ She was interrupted by the sound of a teleport. As she turned, a thunderous sound reverberated across the cliff top as a searing pain tore through her shoulder. Electricity arced over Scarlet’s body. Amaranda winced as the black ichor splattered across her. She could feel the vines loosening.
“You…” Scarlet looked up, grimacing in pain. Ceara stood on the far side of the cliff, adorned in her scarlet red shoulder pauldrons and gauntlets lined with Asuran crystals, the same that allowed her to generate and control her holograms during the Breachmaker battle. She held the large rifle from the lab. A look of great disgust on her face.
“So…” Scarlet gasped, her breathing labored. “You found your toys…”
Ceara stared at her doppelganger, her eyebrows furrowed, her face stoic in digust. “I’ve had enough of you. The things you made me do.” She said through gritted teeth.
“Well, remember, darling. I’m here for the-“
“So hello to Mordremoth for me!”  Ceara cut her off and quickly brought the rifle to bear, firing three more rounds. The first caught Scarlet in the center of her chest, piercing through her body. The second hit her in the throat, and the third hit her in the forehead, throwing her back off her feet.
“It works!” squealed Joujou with excitement. “The rifle works!!” The asura were dropped from the vines as Scarlet fell. Ceara looked at the rifle, its barrel was glowing so hotly that it was starting to droop.
“This steel can’t handle the leyline energy.” She muttered tossing the rifle on the ground. She held her hand up in front of her, the crystals of her gauntlet glowing as a small holographic screen appeared in front of her. She typed a few keys and a branded crystal, fashioned into the shape of a crude blade with a simple hlt. appeared in her hand.
“Hehehehe…you…you think you can stop me…” Scarlet spat, gasping for air, her voice garbled by the wound in her neck. Ceara paused as she looked upon her doppelganger. Half of Scarlets face and skull had been torn off from the crystal bullet that passed through it. She continued laughing as she slowly reconstructed herself. “You…you were such the good puppet. Doing my bidding. Doing…his bidding.” Scarlet glanced at the crystal weapon Ceara was holding. “You do realize darling…as long as you live…as long as you exist…I…I am FOREVER!” Scarlet growled. Vines wrapped around Ceara’s feet, tripping her. Scarlet rose to her feet, catching Ceara’s throat in her grasp as she fell. “Now…it’s time for you to come home…” Scarlet growled through her teeth. Her eyes ignited in a bright white fire. “Return to me…” Ceara heard the jungle dragon in her mind.
“No…” Ceara whimpered. Her hands dropping to her sides, the blade falling from her grip. She could feel Scarlet trying to dig into her mind, into her psyche, trying to pull Ceara’s soul into herself.
     “No!” Amaranda shouted.
“It’s now or never!” Joujou shouted. Her and Shikijo both pressed buttons on their gauntlets, launching tiny discs that landing around Scarlet. Scarlet glanced down at them just in time to see them erupt into an electric field of sorts. Searing pain wracked Scarlet’s body as she was seemingly frozen in place. Ceara was thrown back by the discharge of energy. Grasping at her head, she screamed in pain as it felt as if someone was splitting her skull open from the inside. She dropped to her knees and cried out as loud as she could. She vomited as the pain wracked through her mind. She saw images flash before her, scenes from her life after Scarlet, and before Scarlet. She saw the face of the creature that infiltrated her mind. The face of the jungle dragon. She howled in pain again before collapsing on the ground.
“You were my chosen one.” It growled deeply at her. “My champion. You who awoke me from my slumber. Now, you betray me. Just as your mother betrayed me.” Ceara felt the jungle dragon in her mind, but the pain was too much for her to focus to resist. Her vision clouded as a golden light and a loving voice filled with warmth seemed to envelope her.
“Never again.” it spoke softly but firmly, echoing through her mind.
“Then you shall perish.” The dragon’s voice roared as it disappeared into the murky darkness. Amaranda ran up to her, kneeling down and rolling Ceara over. Ceara vision cleared as she was gasping for air, tears rolling down the sides of her face.
“What…what’s happening to me?” she asked weakly.
“I…I’m not sure….” Amaranda cradled Ceara as she looked at the frozen Scarlet. Joujou and Shikijo approached the energy cage.
“It worked!” Joujou exclaimed looking at a holographic readout projecting from a small device. “Ms. Ghostie is in a stasis, as well as cut off from any energy supply she may have been connected to!” They turned to the rift in the sky just in time to see it slowly disperse. The spire of leyline energy also ebbed into the water.
“You…you cut her off…” Ceara asked, slowly getting to her feet with Amaranda’s help.
“Yep! Even from the Dream.” Shikijo stated, seemingly very proud of himself.
“The Dream?” Ceara thought for a moment before looking at Amaranda. “Does that mean…she’s even cut off from me?” She said, still trying to catch her breath.
“It would appear so.” Joujou replied to her while looking at her gauntlet, a small holographic projection above it. “Though I will apologize for the psychic backlash from that separation. We didn’t realize that would happen.” They were interrupted by the sound of heavy footsteps coming up the cliffside. The group turned to see two heavily armored charr crest the ridge, one in heavy Vigil armor, the other a Lionguardsman. The charr paused, seemingly assessing the situation.
“What in Tyria is happening here!?” one of them growled finally.  “And who is that? and Scarlet Briar is here?” he asked, pointing at the stasis field and at Ceara.
“Well, sir, you see, we have just stopped Scarlet Briar from empowering the elder jungle dragon with Mist energy.” Shikijo stated, his chin held high in confidence. “Might I have your names?” he asked.
“Garanth Stonecutter.” The Lionguardsman stated, staring at Ceara.
“Brom Silvertooth. Vigil Crusader.” The other followed. “So… which one is Scarlet Briar?”
“The one suspended in stasis.” Joujou replied.
“Then who is that?” Garanth asked pointing at Ceara.
     “That’s Cara.” Shikijo stated.
“Ceara.” Amaranda corrected him. She heard Ceara stifle a small laugh.
“It hurts to laugh.” Ceara whimpered.
     “Ceara.” Shikijo repeated.
“So there are two Scarlet Briars!?” the Lionguardsman asked sternly.
“Well…no, only one…but kind of two…you see, Ceara’s mind fragmented when she viewed the Eternal Alchemy and Mordremoth started taking control of her. This aspect of Mordremoth took part of her mind and became the thing you see in the field.”
Amaranda and Ceara watched as the Asura explained to the Charr what happened.  Amaranda turned to Ceara “Is this over? Finally?” she asked in a hush tone.
Ceara lightly shook her head, staring at her doppelganger in the energy field. “I don’t think so…” Amaranda turned to see Scarlet glaring at them, the side of her head slowing regenerating, a strained smile growing across her face which turned into a silent scream.
“Oh no…” Amaranda gasped. The energy cage exploded in a flash of blinding light. When their vision cleared, they saw Scarlet was on the ground kneeling on one knee.
“Your little energy trap was somewhat brilliant, little ones. Only…” She started to rise. “All it did was feed me. Now… let’s even the odds.” She raised her hands in the air, the ground erupting around them as great beasts of vines and branches crawled forth from the very rock itself.
“What in Tyria are those!?” Garanth exclaimed.
“Modrem…” Ceara gasped, recognizing the creatures from her nightmares, and the vision Ventari showed her. “Minions of Mordremoth!” she yelled.
“You all will suffer for your insolence! All of Tyria will suffer!” Scarlet shouted, pointing at Ceara.
“Then let’s dance.” Ceara responded. The beasts charged forward, lashing out at the nearest person. Ceara put her hands up in front of her as the asuran crystals that adorned her armor started to glow. A small set of holographic panels appeared in front of her that she rapidly typed on. A pair of holographic clones appeared next to her and attacked the charging beasts. Amaranda ignited the beam sword she had gotten form the asuras, creating her own clone illusions which joined the battle. The asuran duo typed on small panels on their gauntlets and numerous drones and weaponry teleported in around them. The Charr, brandishing their weapons, let out a booming warcry and charged full speed into the incoming mordrem. The fighting was fierce. It seemed as each mordrem fell, another rose to takes its place.
“If we can last long enough, she’ll burn through her energy!” Shikijo hollered over the sounds of battle, as he dodged the attack of a charging beast.
“How long is that!?” Brom shouted back, bringing his sword down on the skull of a dog-like creature.
“By my rough calculation…about two weeks!” he replied.
“And we have to be cautious! She is still volatile!” Joujou added.
“Volatile!? What do you mean!?” Garanth also asked.
“She could explode and take all of us with her!”
“We don’t have two weeks! This needs to end now!” Ceara scrambled through the chaos to find the branded blade. “I need to get close to her.” Ceara thought. She slowly maneuvered through the battle, keeping Scarlet in her sights.
“It’s not hard to knock these things down…it’s the fact they keep coming!” Brom complained.
“Then we build a wall of bodies!” Garanth replied, swinging his mace to smash one of the creatures.
“Oh darlings, you can’t stop me! You can’t stop Mordremoth! We are forever!!” She brought her hand up, bringing forth a vine from the ground. It wrapped around Garanth’s leg and yanked him down.
“Garanth!” Brom shouted as the mordrem jumped on the fallen Charr. An energy shield erupted from the pile, launching the creatures off him. Brom smiled, which quickly faded when Garanth was pulled away by the vine, quickly careening towards the edge of the cliff. Bram chased after him, catching his arm just as Garanth went over the side.
“So pathetic…” Scarlet spouted, watching the Charr. Her attention turned to the numerous illusions of Amaranda that had been surrounding her. “Tsk tsk, Seer. Your tricks are nothing to me.” Scarlet held out her arm to her side, a vine growing and wrapping around one of the clones, which she brought close. “Now, seer, you should have a talk with-“ Scarlet was cut off by a beam of energy shoved into her back, which protruded from her chest. She watched the clone shatter into a cloud of flowers.
“Heh…you got me this time, seer” She turned and backhanded Amaranda, knocking her away. “Your weapons are nothing to me.” She hissed at Amaranda as she brought her other arm up behind her, vines shot from her arm, wrapping around Ceara and she quickly approached Scarlet. The vines pulled Ceara to Scarlet, which worked in Ceara’s favor.
“Now, time to come home.” Scarlet smiled, which was short lived as Ceara used the branded blade to cut through the vines much to Scarlet’s bewilderment. Ceara attacked Scarlet relentlessly, putting her on the defensive. Eventually, Scarlet managed to get a vine coiled around Ceara’s arm that was holding the blade, bending it in a way that her arm backwards and pulling it. A loud crack was heard as Ceara felt the bones in her shoulder seperate. She screamed in pain, dropping the blade. Scarlet kicked it away while pulling Ceara to her.
“I tire of this.” Scarlet grabbed Ceara by the face but was interrupted again by Amaranda’s clones. Scarlet screamed in frustration. Tossing Ceara aside, she launched an attack of vines against Amaranda.
“I’ve got an idea. It’s a long shot, but an idea.” Shikijo stated.
“What are you going to do?” Joujou asked.
“Going to get some help.” He replied, disappearing in a teleport flash.
“WAIT! Blast it!” Joujou cursed. She turned her attention back to the battle. She quickly surveyed what was happening, trying to form a plan. Moments later, she was interrupted by a teleport flash above Scarlet.
“What…” Scarlet looked up to see a group of unruly pirates falling on top of her.
“Get her while she’s down, mates!” They piled on her, collapsing her to the ground. “Keep her down and we’re free!” Ceara looked on, nursing her injured arm. She recognized the pirates as the group she found in Bloodtide Coast. She took the moment to retrieve the branded blade while Scarlet was distracted.
“Um, captain!? What are those things!?” one of the crew asked. Captain Riggs looked at the mordrem who were turning towards them. Ceara was about to warn them, when vines erupted through the pile, stabbing through some of the group while throwing others off.
“ENOUGH!” Scarlet’s voice bellowed over the cliff. “This ends now!”
“Indeed, it does.” She heard Ceara’s voice behind her. She turned in time to see Ceara drive the branded blade through her chest. Black ichorous blood burst from Scarlet’s mouth. Electricity arced over her body and along the ground and the air filled with the hum of energy and a smell of ozone. Scarlet slowly reached up and grabbed Ceara by the bodice.
     “Wha…why? We could…we could have made…the world a better place…”
     “I just did…” Ceara smiled.
     “This…isn’t…over…” Scarlet spat.
“Yes, it is…” Ceara smiled. “Later, tater.” She spoke softly.
“I…never really liked you…” Scarlet growled. Beams of energy shot from her eyes and mouth as Ceara quickly realized that Scarlet’s body was about to erupt. She tried to pull Scarlets hand free, but it was holding on tight. Scarlet’s body began to disintegrate in a torrent of energy. The wind throwing debris everywhere.
“Get behind me!” Garanth ordered the Asura as he placed his shield in front of him, projecting a force field. Brom covered the asura with his body to protect them. Amaranda found cover behind a pile of rocks, along with the remaining pirate crew. A deafening explosion rocked the cliffside, sending dirt and debris into the air, and then silence.
“Is…is it over?” Shikijo asked nervously.
Garanth looked out from behind his shield to see a small crater where Scarlet once stood. “Looks like it.” He replied.
“Ceara?” Amaranda called to her while looking out from the rockpile. She could see Ceara lying face down, partially covered in dirt. “Ceara!” She ran over to her. “No..no no no!” She rolled Ceara’s motionless body over.
“Wake up! By the pale mother, you have to wake up!” Tears started welling up in Amaranda’s eyes. “It can’t end like this.” She whimpered as she lightly slapped Ceara’s cheek. Ceara groaned lightly.
“It hurts when you do that.” she muttered. She slowly opened her eyes, her breathing was very labored.
“Thank the pale tree!” Amaranda cradled Ceara’s head in her arms.
“You’re…choking me…Did…we win?” Ceara asked gasping.
“We did.” Amaranda said nodding her head. She turned to look at the branded blade laying on the ground. The two Asura standing around it, scanning it with equipment.
“I feel…like I’ve been shot with a cannonball…” Ceara said as she gasped for air. She opened her hand, revealing the small force shield device she had activated just in time.
“We need a mender here now!” Amaranda screamed as the Charr approached. “Didn’t you hear me!? She needs help!”
Garanth closed his eyes for a moment while taking a deep breath. “Scarlet Briar, you are under arrest for crimes against the people of Tyria. If you resist, we will use force.”
“WHAT!?” Amaranda screamed. “YOU CAN’T BE SERIOUS!? She needs attention right now! Besides, her name isn’t Scarlet Briar!” Amaranda looked down at her. “It’s Ceara.” Ceara looked at Amaranda for a moment before looking back the Charr.
“Ma’am, whatever her name is, she is a wanted criminal. And if you stand in the way, you will be arrested for obstruction as well.”
“I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS!” Amaranda screamed.
“Stand down, Garanth.” A voice said behind them. The Charr turned to see Taranis standing not far away, flanked by 3 other Sylvari.
“Warden! Do something!” Amaranda said, noticing Failynne standing in the group.
     “Sir?” Garanth asked.
“That’s an order. We are turning Scarlet Briar over to these wardens.”
“What!? She’s a wanted criminal! She destroyed Lion’s Arch! She killed people all throughout Tyria!”
“Dismissed!” Taranis barked the order. The Charr breathed in deep, the anger brewing in his eyes. He and Brom both started marching down the cliffside.
“I don’t like this at all.” Brom muttered under his breath. “I think all these Sylvari are up to something.”
Taranis looked at the crystal blade that lay in on the ground nearby.
“Yep, she’s contained in the crystal.” Shikijo said.
“And she’s not happy about it” Joujou added.
“We’ll call the Priory up here to retrieve it.” Taranis said to them.
“Oh, we were going to take it back to Rata Sum for study.”
Taranis’s face grew angry. “What that thing holds is too dangerous to be out in the world! The Priory will take it and safeguard it away where no one will be able to find it. If you resist, I will have you arrested and thrown into the same prison you teleported those pirates out of! Consider yourselves lucky!” He then walked past them to where Ceara lay before turning to Failynne and the wardens.
“Warden, she’s all yours.” He stated.
“Thank you, Taranis. I’m sorry the mother tree had to put you in this position.”
“No matter. I have already tendered my resignation from the Lionguard and sent it to Kiel. When this gets out, it’ll be my neck on the line.” He breathed in deep looking at Ceara.  “I’ve always wondered what the life of a farmer was like.”
“I’m sorry.” Failynne said softly before turning to the wardens. “Tapani, get a mender up here and get Scarlet ready for transport back to the Grove.”
“No!” Ceara coughed. “Take…take me to Mender Seoras…in Bloodtide Coast…” her voice was raspy.
     “Seoras?” Failynne asked, somewhat puzzled.
     “Do it!” Amaranda shouted.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Seoras sat at his small table, writing in his journal when he heard a ruckus outside. Stepping into the doorway into his home, he saw a group of armored Sylvari approaching carrying what looked to be a stretcher of sorts. He stepped out and recognized Ceara on the stretcher. He rushed out to them.
     “What happened?” he asked.
“She is having trouble breathing. Her right arm is broken, maybe dislocated at the shoulder. Not sure what else.” Failynne told him.
“Get her inside immediately!” he ordered. Ceara was brought back into the room from which she awoke from her coma. They gently moved her to the bed and Seoras started removing her armor.
“We’ll wait outside.” Failynne motioned her wardens to leave.
“Wilda, bring me the oils and…just hand me everything in that shelf!” Seoras spoke to a colorful sylvari woman that was staying in the same village. She started gathering the things he requested. Ceara slowly turned her head towards Amaranda.
“Amee…” she whispered, her voice barely audible. Amaranda knelt and gently grabbed Ceara’s hand.
“I’m here.” Amaranda spoke softly. Ceara started gasping for air.
“It’s going to be ok.” Ceara forced a small smiled, her bioluminescence flared brightly. “It’s all…it’s…all going to be… ok…” her voice trailed off as her glow slowly faded. Her eyes dulled as her head slowly rolled to the side.
“Ceara? CEARA! NO!” Amaranda screamed. “NO! COME BACK!”
Seoras looked at Ceara’s face. “She’s fading!” He quickly started grabbing items from Wilda’s arms.
“Ceara! No! Come back!” Amaranda was hysterical, tears streaming down her face.
“Wilda, get her out of here now!” Seoras ordered the colorful sylvari.
“Come. You can’t be in here right now. It’s not good.” Wilda walked Amaranda out of the abode to where Failynne and the wardens were waiting.
“It can’t end this way….” Amaranda dropped to the ground sobbing. One of the wardens knelt beside her, gently placing his hand on her shoulder. “She…she was on the right path.” Amaranda said through her tears.
“Is she…” Failynne started, turning to Wilda.
“When she was brought to us before, she was at the brink, barely clinging to life. Mender Seoras pulled her back and saved her life.” Wilda spoke in a calming tone. “Right now, he is doing everything he can.” she said solemnly, before returning to Seoras’s home.

ATLA AU: Mechanist Zuko AU
________________________________________________________________
Basically as the title says, but heres some background. Instead of Zuko turning to swords to compensate for his lack of fire-bending skills the turns towards inventions and machines, afterwards he discovered a skill for it and became an inventor instead of a fire-bender, though to compensate for his lack of fire-bending he basically made a wrist mounted portable flamethrower on both of his arms. but he does fire-bend only to a small degree, he basically uses his bending for welding and soldering, and before you ask yes he still has his scar but not because of an agni kai, he still spoke out during the war meeting and declined the agni kai considering he new his fire-bending wouldn’t be up to par with a general.
So, since Ozai is still a horrible excuse for a human being he hired assassins to rigs zukos personal workshop, that zuko had requested to be built within the palace, to explode causing zuko to have not only his iconic scar but also the loss of his left arm and leg which he replaced with machine prosthetics. and Ozai added insult to injury by accusing Zuko of causing the explosion and banishing him, but not to capture the avatar no this was more ironic, Zuko was sent to become nothing more then a mere savager for the fire nation, collecting sunken wrecks and war machines to be repurposed and reused by the military.
and also to clarify he cares very little for the avatar, since he prefers science and machines over bending and spirits, so yeah the worlds Zuko is a massive skeptic on all things spiritual. but I digress, during a minor expedition to the south pole, to salvage some old warships, zuko spots the bright pillar of light and, brushes it off as spirits and magic, and ignores it. Then Zuko sees the flare that katara and aang tripped when they were exploring the fire nation ship. so zuko arrives at the south pole village and they all immediately assume that he’s after the avatar, and hes sokka gets his butt kicked still and aang still shows up, but thats where the similarities end.
After aang does the “are you looking for me” thing Zuko ask’s him about the flair and where it came from. and Zuko grabs aang by the shoulder, and pushes him aside with little to no interest or care. and starts bringing tools and equipment in order to salvage the ship, and Zuko just straight up ignores aang even thought hes the avatar. aang later asks him on account that aang is a 12 year old and wants to know why he’s being ignored, which Zuko tells him that spirits and avatars don’t interest him as this version of zuko believes more in the power of machines then bending, thinking technology superior and bending over hyped.
This immediately sets aang on a spirits and bending and blah blah blah speech which zuko completely ignores. So aang takes it upon himself to not only master all four elements but to also pester this very annoyed and very done with everything fire-bending prince, in an attempt to prove bending and spirits are important.
in conclusion:
Ozai is a terrible parent
Zuko not only has a scar on his face both his left arm and leg are prosthetic
Zuko, uses flamethrowers and gadgets to compensate for his lack of bending
Zuko is a mechanical genius who is also a huge spirit skeptic
Aang along with sokka and katara are still going to the north pole but are also trying to convince zuko about spirits
Zuko thinks bending is needless and thinks any machine is better then bending.
Zuko is still a socially awkward turtleduck
Side note: he’ll learn his father caused the explosion in the palace that caused him to lose half his limbs by Zhao, and yeah he loses all respect and love for his father after that. Zuko will most likely end up being friends with sokka since they are both gear-heads and inventors. he’ll be fascinated by tophs metal bending and ends up boosting her ego more then he should, and Zuko will instently become facinated with aangs glider and try to recreate it with many failed attempts, Iroh will still be a great uncle and father figure to Zuko, though he’ll be concerned with Zukos prominent upgrades to the ship, (I mean what ship needs a giant drill at the end of it!?)

Note
Uhhh this is embarrassing but can you tell me the plot of soi? I know that they're fighting israphel and all... I have watched it, but I was literally like, in third grade. It's been a hot minute. I don't remember anybody but the bacon lady and her funeral. And the pirates.
yeah so uh, i didn’t really write this up, my sister did. on which note, she’s @isabel-peculier, so y’all should follow her. I’m sorry if this is a bit hard to read… I cleaned it up as much as I could, and as it’s just what she remembers, it isn’t totally accurate. But it’s still totally mad that she could write it up.
Simon, Lewis, Lysander and Old Peculier return to the Yogcave to find it destroyed and burning. They destroy the nether portal that Lewis and Simon had built; Peculier is ill so they go to Mistral City in order to recover. In Mistral City they meet Father Braeburn, a musical priest, and Granny Bacon, who Simon then has… some private time with whilst Lewis gets a tour from Lysander. To heal Peculier they visit Fumblemore, local wizard, and collect a few items to make a healing potion (read: some golden apples and a feather in dirty water.)
Lewis, Simon and Peculier go into the abandoned mine in town because Peculier’s father mentioned it in his diary. Down there they find two destroyed portals and a note from Peculier’s dad telling Peculier to fight Israphel in his stead, and they find all his old knight’s gear. Peculier becomes Knight Peculier (KP) and it’s very emotional. They come out of the mine to find Mistral City burning. They save the golden record for Braeburn, realise Fumblemore’s tower is gone, and find a shrine to Israphel in Lysander’s house suggesting that he is a cultist and burned down Mistral.
Peculier leaves Lewis and Simon to investigate ‘the crumbling ruin’, an old mine/temple where they find Granny Bacon as a zombie (who they kill) and Reverend John undead with a piece of paper. They kill John, destroy a portal and get out. They travel through 'the skull’ just outside of Mistral and find a carnival on the other side where Simon loses a strength test to Known Cheater strongman Bruno and have their fortunes told by Madame Nubescu.
They go to Verigan’s hold (where Peculier said to meet them) where they find Templar Adaephon, Peculier’s uncle, who explains there is a great wall which keeps the Sands out of Minecraftia. The wall has been breached and Peculier is trying to fix it so they go and help rebuild it whilst fighting Israphel & friends and it takes like 4 episodes. Adaephon says the paper they got from Reverend John is a quarter of Karpath’s map and that they must find the rest. Returning briefly to Mistral, they meet Swampy Bogbeard, Fumblemore’s smoked out magical hippie brother.
Lewis and Simon go to BBQ bay where they help out a pirate (Jock Fireblast) and befriend one too (Spacker Le Chuck) as they help kill Grimjaw. They go meet 'the dread pirate Norris’, a woman called Isabel Peculier, KP’s sister. She shows them the dungeon type place where Grimjaw supposedly hid his treasure and the location of a map piece. They meet her companion Pirate Tinman, do some dungeony stuff, but where the map should be they only find footage of Jock taking it. When they get back they go to ask Jock about it in his submarine, but he traps them in a room with a portal which takes them to a weird metal room in the nether. When they escape, BBQ bay is on fire as Jock is burning it like he did to Mistral (Lysander was framed). They kill him, get the map piece and leave.
They go back to Swampy with Spacker to find Stoneholm. Instead they find a Skylord retreat where Jasper is keeping Lysander in a dungeon because he 'burned down mistral’ (read: they’re into some weird shit). They bust out Lysander, and escape to a boat with Jasper’s servant Um Bongo. Spacker says he’ll meet them in Stoneholm and they fly on planes to Skyhold.
In Skyhold, everyone is dead except a Skylord called Vitali. Lysander’s grandad (Baako) dies when they get there, and the carnival is there too. Vitali (poorly) frames Nubescu for the murder of the Skylords. Lewis and Simon complete the three 'challenges’ (all vaguely centred around an element) to become Skylords whilst helping solve the mystery of why all the Skylords are dead. Turns out Vitali is a vampire and killed them all, so they stake him. After completing the challenges they get some goggles and go into 'the control room’ where they discover that Skyhold can move.
They go into a big metal turtle in the ocean and find a fragment of the map in there. They turn the turtle on, albeit too late, and find a message from Verigan telling them to use his map, and he shows them a vision of a future in which Israphel has won.
They then fly to Stoneholm. Trying to enter through the main doors proves futile, as there is supposedly a ‘plague’ that has infected the dwarves, although Spacker finds this suspicious - dwarves are immune to any plague. After breaking in through the back, they find a dwarf woman called Moira Magmabloom, and watch as Rory Rockhammer is turned into a zombie by the dwarf King, Finbar, another cultist of Israphel. Moira notes that another stranger arrived some time ago and is being kept in the prison - it is Peculier, who they swiftly break out of the cell.
They kill another cultist dwarf, Kormag Darkforge, in the process.
They exit Stoneholm via the Deepcore, a diamond mine, and witness the powered-down drills that the dwarves used to mine bedrock. From there they find a set of railways to the world beyond.
The minecarts transport them to C.H.L.O.E, a pillar or spire which originally powered the ‘Dark God’ of the sands, but was used by Verigan to trap the God and empower the wall instead. They climb up the spire and go through a portal; this takes them to another metal nether room where King Finbar is waiting. He has used CHLOE to reawaken the God in 3 days time; his mocking words about Daisy’s impending death as a sacrifice enrages Peculier, and he kills Finbar. As they now only have 3 days to save the world, Simon has to make Peculier feel better when he becomes discouraged. They travel through another strange metal facility in the nether, and enter a portal which takes them to Lastwatch Hold - an old Templar hold, long since destroyed by the sands. Peculier recounts his story to the heroes in full, telling them of his troubled past, his obsession with Israphel, and the curse that seems to follow his family. Having nothing left for them in the destroyed hold, they travel back to the nether.
In the nether, they find another portal which takes them to the carnival’s underground dressing room at Verigan’s hold. There they find the invisible pickaxe Bruno beat Honeydew with in the strength contest. They dig up to find Verigan’s Hold covered in sand and find Adaephon sick. They show him the completed map and they travel via balloon to the Spider Tree, and then to a tall spire where they get a map into the desert. There’s a lot of fuckin’ maps.
Lewis, Simon and Peculier enter the 'evil’ desert and find a great metal hand. Inside they find notes from a Templar called Enoch who worked ages ago on what the sand was (like an archaeologist). He worked with Prof. Grizwold, who correctly realised the sand (which Enoch obsessed over) was not the problem. It was a mechanism to keep great machines from being awaken, and as they dug the sand away, the more metal appeared. They find Enoch’s remnants as he went crazy and removed his bones, cursed by Israphel. They find a railtrack that goes three separate ways, Lewis and Simon having safe destinations, KP’s dropping him into lava. He (tragically, and I’m never getting over it) dies, leaving the heroes slightly aimless.
Travelling further into the hand, Lewis and Simon find a cloning machine and make 2 more (evil) Simons which they eventually kill. They also find the rest of the metal hand covered in blood and lots of zombie lab assistants (who look like Duncan). They find a very sick man called Webley (a descendant of Grizwold) stuck in a cloning machine and help him out to the top layer of the hand; they leave with a promise to find him a healer. Lewis and Simon go into the desert, past a dragon skeleton to find a buried ship housing a Shiplord called Hubert who travels with them - it’s not as though he was going anywhere fast. They follow another map to a large walled rectangle where they find Swampy. Inside there are dead trees and land, and as Lewis, Simon and Hubert keep the baddies at bay, Swampy regrows his oasis so it’s covered in grass, trees, water and animals. He gives them ‘herbs’ to help Webley.
And… that’s all, folks.

Types and uses of drilling machines
Drill Machine
Drill is a machine tool used for drilling the holes in solid equipment like metal and wood. Drills are used in a wide variety of applications in metalworking, constructions and woodworking industries. The drill is used for our domestic requirements to make holes on walls and materials. These are presented in different sizes and power capacities.
Types of Drills
Varieties of drills are pretended as per the industrial requirements. They are categorized based on special parameters like manual drills and automatic drill machines. Manual drills are referred to as hand milled drills used with hand force on the device/material to drill a hole. Physical drill variants are Bow drill, Gimlet, Breast drill and push drill etc. These are mechanical with electricity or packed in air known as electronic drill and pneumatic drill respectively. Drilling works are carried out at different locations with various types of drills including construction drill, wells drill, thermal drill etc. All drills have special applications of drilling from little to larger size holes.
Pistol grip drill is normally used in our daily work. Right angle drill is used in plumbing and electrical mechanisms. Hammer drill is like an electrical drill with the addition of hammer action on the same device. Rotary hammer drill is equipped with a rotation device used for drilling in solid constructions. Cordless drills with natural rechargeable battery power are used where electrical supply is not reachable for drilling.
Radial Drill Machine
Radial drill machine with geared beginning put up a press on a huge area without relocating the workpiece. Radial arm drill press is pretend with several dimensions of drill head and unreliable base plate. Different width and size of drill bits are used here to drill from small to large size holes. These are very much popular and commonly used in automotive, workshops and garages.
Drill Press/Pillar Drill Machine
Tumblr media
Drill press is the drill machine that can be position mounted or fixed with floor or workbench through bolting. Drill presses also well-known as pillar drills consist of base, column, table, drill head and spindle. This bench drill uses an induction motor provided to carry out the drilling process faster with a little or larger drill bit. Drill press is quite lighter and capable for the operator compared to hand drill. The clamping of the drill press makes the suitable positioning for precision and accurate drilling operation.
Drilling cum Milling Machine
A Drill cum milling machine is used for both drilling and milling. This lighter machine has a great choice of milling capabilities to save space including the added functionalities of determining the materials.
Features/Benefits
Equipment authorizes us to perform a lot of tasks which we cannot perform using just our human body. It is nearly impossible for humans to perform tasks like defeating surfaces or punching holes in walls, which even martial artists can find extremely hard. This gives way to the invention of  tools since the limestone Age which has made life much easier, enabling man to successfully do the tasks with ease. These tools over the years have become better in terms of technology and features which enables faster and better performance. Since the beginning , man has known the significance of rotary tools which has helped them to manually create perforations on different surfaces easily.
Currently,  the modern drill machine uses electric power to drill holes  which makes the work faster, better and easier. The drill machine enables the craftsmen to punch holes on different surfaces without much efforts or time consumption. Thus making it an essential tool for construction sites, automobile factories, warehouses etc.
The drill machine is composed of two units , one the main machine body - the drill while the other is called the drill bits. These bits are sharp rods of different circumferences and shapes which help in punching holes in solid surfaces.
With proper safety measures and skill these drill machines are a time saver for the craftsmen in all the major fields of work.

This Explosive Chevrolet C4 Corvette Street Fighter Packs 585 Horsepower
Every once in a while, the photography for a Vette car feature falls through the cracks and disappears into the abyss, but we believe Robert Lombardi’s 1992 Chevrolet C4 Corvette photographed by John Machaquiero in 2015 sets a new record. A lot can happen in five years, so we were quite pleased when Robert returned our call and gave Vette the lowdown on the ’92 Corvette coupe he used to own.
This article was originally featured on HOT ROD. For more stories like this, check out the HOT ROD Network. And if you want to learn about the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, head here.
Prior to the ’92 C4, Robert owned a 1987 Porsche 928 GT4, but said it wasn’t fast enough and it would have cost too much to modify. Robert made a visit to Corvette Conspiracy in Cleveland and bought one of the 1,995 1992 Corvettes finished in Pollo Green II metallic. Consequently, Corvette Conspiracy was Robert’s go-to for all of the modifications made to make the C4 a real sleeper.
Fitting under a stock ’92 hood, the 350-inch LT1 was punched out to 396 inches with a Callies Magnum stroker assembly hung with eight Mahle 9.0:1 pistons topped with AFR 195cc LT4 Eliminator street heads. The valvetrain centers around a Comp Cams camshaft with 0.544 intake and 0.544 exhaust lift. The intake manifold is a modified LT4 matched to a modified LT4 fuel-injection system. An intercooler and K&N air filter round out the major induction bits. The big 585 dyno-proven rear-wheel horsepower comes from an ATI ProCharger supercharger. The infamously bad Opti-Spark was swapped for ACCEL DFI Gen 7.0 coil-over-plug ignition with a FAST controller. The exhaust features Melrose headers into a complete Billy Boat 3-inch stainless steel exhaust system.
Producing 585 hp and 565 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels and matching the automatic transmission and differential to cope didn’t happen all at once. On the Dynojet dyno it was noticed no matter how tight the belt was tightened it slipped, and the power dropped. The cure was to machine Gilmer drive pulleys for the supercharger and equip it with a cogged Kevlar belt. With the belt slippage fixed, the stock 700-R4 transmission shattered and scattered its innards and was replaced with a Hayden-cooled Gearstar Level 4 700-R4 rated to handle the big horsepower. Set up and installed by Corvette Conspiracy, the rearend is a Dana 44 with 3.45 gearing. For increased cooling ability, a large-capacity radiator was installed.
The brakes and suspension on Robert’s ’92 started out as garden-variety, standard C4 issue. To upgrade, front and rear Bilstein sport shocks and polyurethane bushings were installed, plus a 1986 Corvette convertible X-brace was bolted to existing pickup points. The front brakes were updated to 1996 Grand Sport specs with drilled rotors. For wheels and tires, in front 295/35R18 Nitto Invo tires are mounted on black 18×9 Scorpion wheels and 325/30R19 Nitto Invo tires on 19×10.5 black Scorpion wheels in the rear.
Robert’s ’92 C4 came factory equipped with light beige leather AQ9 sport seats and Delco-Bose sound system. Corvette Conspiracy swapped the Delco-Bose out for a Pioneer AVH-5600BHS head unit with an Alpine DDX 4-150 amp and front speakers. Bringing up the rear are Alpine SPR136A SPR 175A speakers, and for bass response, two Bazooka BTA6250D bass tubes. The driver-side A-pillar houses two carbon-fiber Auto-Meter gauges: one for fuel pressure and the other boost/vacuum.
In the seven years it took to outfit Robert’s ’92 Chevrolet C4 Corvette coupe as it appears here the car served as a daily driver, street racer and show car with vacation trips to the Florida Keys and a few visits to the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Robert told us he’s gaining interest repeating his Corvette Conspiracy experience, but this time with a C6.

Sheikh Waleed K. Al Hashar, CEO, Bank Muscat shares the initiatives that have enabled the bank to emerge as the No. 1 bank in the Sultanate
How was Bank Muscat’s financial performance in FY2018? Supporting the objective of economic diversification, Bank Muscat focused on opportunities in the potential sectors identified by the government. The year 2018 was better for the economy and the banking sector given the higher level of oil prices most part of the year and the government’s continued efforts to manage the fiscal situation prudently. The bank’s financial results have been strong and stable in the last few years. The momentum continued in 2018 with good credit growth and stable profitability.
The bank posted a net profit of RO179.63mn for the period ending 31 December 2018 compared to RO176.82mn reported during the same period in 2017, an increase of 1.6 per cent. Continuing the bank’s strong dividend payment track record, 40 per cent cash and stock dividend was proposed for 2018 compared to 35 per cent dividend in 2017. During the year, the bank focused on its dynamic vision ‘To Serve You Better, Everyday’ to make a difference in banking excellence.
How were your retail and corporate lending during the year? Bank Muscat has consistently maintained a stable loan book growth with a conservative lending approach focused on high quality assets. The bank is the leading retail bank platform in Oman with approximately 2 million retail customers and the largest distribution network. At RO3.29bn, the retail banking division accounted for 26.8 per cent of the bank’s total assets in 2018.
With about 6,500 corporate customers, Bank Muscat is also the leading corporate bank franchise in Oman. The bank has strong project finance capabilities and a diversified loan portfolio across sectors. At RO4.46bn, the corporate banking division accounted for 36.3 per cent of the bank’s total assets in 2018.
The bank’s net loans and advances, including Islamic financing receivables, increased by 7.3 per cent to RO8.93bn as against RO8.33bn as at 31 December 2017.
What were the major milestones during the year? Can you talk about the measures to enhance retailing, ATM and CDM networks of the bank? With almost 50 per cent of the network of self-service machines and kiosks in Oman, the bank’s e-channel network is growing steadily and includes 426 ATMs, 113 CDMs, 134 full function machines (FFMs) and 10 business cash deposit machines (BCDMs) for bulk deposits by corporates. The largest network of innovative e-channels unleash convenience and secure banking services across the Sultanate, including remote and far-flung areas.
In keeping with technological developments, the bank’s digital channels are witnessing consistent growth. In ongoing upgrades in 2018, the bank installed 60 new ATMs and CDMs. The bank maintains high uptime exceeding 95 per cent throughout its ATM/CDM network across Oman.
The self-serve ATM/CDM network forms a pillar of benchmark customer service and Bank Muscat can proudly claim that its network spread across the country is the preferred choice. Meeting the banking requirements of citizens and residents in all regions, the bank’s digital channel network is notable in remote areas.
The bank joined hands with MetLife, one of the world’s leading financial services companies, and signed a 10-year agreement to offer a bouquet of innovative insurance solutions. Aimed at providing a distinct banking experience, the bank launched Tablet banking to offer a convenient door-step service for clients. Enhancing convenience, cashless payment solution was introduced for the first time for parking meters at Muscat International Airport. With this, payment at the airport parking kiosks can now be made with debit and credit cards. As part of initiatives to improve customer experience, asalah Priority Banking expanded its reach across Oman by opening 5 new centers.
What about the measures taken to support SMEs? Bank Muscat has launched various initiatives to support the country’s youth in the development of successful SMEs. During the year, the bank took strategic steps to strengthen the SME sector in Oman. The unique al Wathbah Academy programme widened its reach to benefit entrepreneurs in Sharqiyah governorate following successful programmes in Muscat, Sohar, Salalah and Nizwa. The programme reflects the bank’s commitment to sustainable development, strengthening the role of SMEs in the economic development of Oman. Al Wathbah Academy programmes across Oman impart the required skills and guidance for entrepreneurs drawn from diverse fields to embark on successful SME business ventures. The programme leads to accredited international certification by Project Management Institute (PMI). The bank’s experience in partnering with SMEs enabled it to develop non-traditional techniques for assessing credit risk and providing appropriate solutions relevant to their needs.
How was the performance of the bank’s Islamic banking window during 2018? Meethaq Islamic Banking consolidated its leadership position, contributing to the growth and development of the Sultanate’s economy. Encouraging a strong savings culture, Meethaq launched Hibati savings prize scheme offering the largest number of prizes in the Islamic banking segment worth over RO1mn.
Aimed at promoting renewable Green energy in the Sultanate, Meethaq inaugurated Oman’s first solar-powered bank branch. The rooftop solar panel installation at the Al Khoud branch has the capacity to produce 50 kW electricity and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 52.56 tonnes per year.
Empowering the community from a young age, the Little Investor programme launched in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Injaz Oman focused on developing children’s knowledge of finance to equip them with skills to become future entrepreneurs. Over 10,500 students were trained during the year in financial literacy as part of the Little Investor programme.
What were the major HR initiatives taken by the bank? Reflecting a dynamic customer-centric strategy, the bank announced a new Organisation Structure, approved by the Central Bank of Oman (CBO), effective 1 January 2019. The new Organisation Structure is geared towards realisation of the bank’s future strategy, reinforcing its leadership position and empowering Omanis to hold positions of greater responsibility at all levels in the bank.
The bank’s Jadara Academy was awarded accreditation as an established Corporate Academy by the Global Association for Corporate Universities & Academies (G-ACUA). The accreditation endorsed Jadara Academy’s world-class professional standards in learning and development programmes.
With outstanding stable leadership, the bank achieved 94.67 per cent Omanisation, giving priority for Omanis in key positions. The bank’s human resources strategy is notable in gender diversity as 48 per cent of employees are women holding various positions, including senior Management positions. Of the total 3,779 employees, the number of women employees presently stands at 1,784.
What are the future plans to enhance operational efficiency and technological deployment? Following a comprehensive IT infrastructure review in association with a leading international consultant and due consideration of optimisation and technological convergence, the bank launched a programme to implement the recommendations to make the IT infrastructure future ready.
To stay ahead of the ever changing cyber threats, the Bank has taken extensive efforts to ensure the effectiveness of its cyber security programs and upgraded to latest sophisticated tools and technologies to enhance its cyber security defence capabilities. Successful completion of the disaster recovery drill and business continuity exercise affirmed the bank’s highest business continuity standards.
During the year the bank worked on more than 45+ technology projects and around 30 of them are fully delivered. To manage and oversee the IT function and the large project portfolio, a well-defined Project and IT Governance framework is in place.
What are the bank’s priority areas and outlook for 2019? Enhancing Customer Experience remains our key focus as envisaged in the Vision statement ‘To Serve You Better, Everyday’. We shall remain focused on this fundamental objective in all our operations. In line with the new Organisation Structure, the bank will continue to focus on developing competent human resources and adopting cutting edge technology to provide the ‘best in class’ service. We will mark our differentiation with innovative digital channels and products catering to all segments. The bank will be geared towards strong asset growth and innovation to improve operational efficiency, augment revenue, reduce risk and enhance customer experience, all in sync with fulfilling the social responsibility.

This Stunning 1949 Cadillac Custom is Street Rodder’s 2017 Street Rod of the Year
For many years, the NSRA Street Rod Nationals in Louisville has been one of the events designated for the STREET RODDER Top 100 awards. Last year we decided to do something different by including the indoor display cars in our selections. It turned out to be a good move. One of our indoor picks was this 1949 Cadillac Sedanette built by Chris Carlson Hot Rods in Mulvane, Kansas, and owned by Bruce and Cheryl Conwell of Wichita. The Conwells’ Cadillac is the 2017 Painless Performance Products/STREET RODDER Street Rod of the Year.
As a kid, Bruce’s playground was the auto shop originally opened by his grandfather in 1928. In the ’60s, he built go-karts and mini-bikes and helped his father work on cars. When he was 10, he helped rebuild the engine on a 1957 Oldsmobile, re-machining the heads by himself. After hearing the finishing engine start, he was hooked on cars for life. His first car, at 16, was a 1955 Chevy wagon. Since then, he has owned a large number and variety of cool cars, including street rods, muscle cars, kit cars—nothing is outside the range of his interest. As years passed and he got closer to retirement, he felt the urge to get back into street rodding. The 1935 Ford coupe he bought was fun for in-town cruising and short trips but what he really wanted was a comfortable cruiser.
Bruce says he’s always been a fan of the Cadillac Sedanette, and had an image in his mind of what Cadillac engineers in 1949 might have built if they had access to today’s technology. He talked to Chris and Drew Carlson—who had worked with Bruce on the 1935 coupe—about blending the Cadillac’s classic styling with modern tech. An eBay search turned up a 1949 Sedanette from the San Francisco area—a complete, cosmetically satisfactory car with the original engine and transmission, a repairable amount of rot, and perfect potential. It came with the 1949 owner’s manual, a copy of the original invoice, and a photo of the car when it was delivered to its original owner, actor Adolphe Menjou, who had ordered it with a load of options suitable for a Hollywood movie star.
The body design evolved as Bruce, Chris, and Drew developed ideas and by the time the car was finished there wasn’t an inch of sheetmetal that hadn’t been modified. The top was chopped 2-1/2 inches in front and 5 in the back. B-pillars were leaned forward and the driprails were reshaped. Two to three inches of sheetmetal was added all around the bottom of the body—at the rear quarters and doors, at the front quarters behind the reshaped wheel openings, and below the shortened decklid and taillights. The quarters were welded to the body and door handles were shaved. A bead rolled edge was added to the lower rockers, around the front wheel openings, and along the top of the rear bumper.
At the front, a 1955 Cadillac bumper was cut in 30 places to get the right shape and fit. The stock grille trim was eliminated and replaced by a 1946 Cadillac grille bar. The stock hood was welded and recut to create a smaller sports car–style hood, which was pancaked and radiused. The nose was extended 12 inches and peaked. The 1956 Olds headlights and rings were raised 2 inches. At the other end, the stock taillights were flush fit to the body and the license plate was frenched into the extended sheetmetal. The bumper was lowered to align with the side trim, and notched and bead rolled around the exhaust tips. Along the sides, custom skirts were added, handles were shaved, and the art deco–style side mirror fabricated for Menjou was replicated with a pair of Hagan mirrors on custom chrome stems. When the body had been modified and prepped to perfection, Chris Carlson sprayed the candy red paint, custom mixed using Martin Senour paint.
The 18×7 billet Sabre wheels with Cadillac caps from Circle Racing Wheels and low-profile 215/55 R18 whitewalls from Diamond Back Classic Radials are the perfect combination of rolling components to complement the car’s reproportioned traditional look.
A Roadster Shop chassis forms the foundation of Conwell’s custom Sedanette. The 10-gauge steel ’rails are fully boxed and fabricated to provide the classic, custom, on-the-ground stance. The Roadster Shop Fast Track front suspension includes large-diameter tubular control arms, Corvette C6-style spindles and hubs, a 1-1/4-inch splined sway bar, and a quick-ratio steering rack. The ride is smoothed by four-corner air suspension from RideTech’s ShockWave HQ series. The Strange Engineering rear includes a Ford 9-inch, housing 3.73:1 gears with a Truetrac limited slip differential, spinning stainless 31-spline axles. A large-diameter triangulated four-bar locates the rearend, and a 1-inch splined through-frame antiroll bar and 22-inch Panhard bar improve handling. The Wilwood brake system includes six-piston calipers and 13-inch cross-drilled rotors in the front and four-piston calipers with 11-inch discs in the rear, controlled by underdash dual master cylinders.
The engine compartment was beautified, with a custom smooth firewall and inner fenders painted body color, and a silver and gold engine cover. A new LS3 is hidden underneath. Dual K&N air cleaners filter the air going to the Edelbrock fuel-injection system on a cross-ram dual throttle body manifold, while 10.7:1 hypereutectic aluminum pistons and powdered metal rods work the nodular iron crank. Gases are expelled through Corvette headers into a MagnaFlow 2-1/2-inch exhaust system corked with XL Performance Mufflers. A Spal electric fan and Be Cool radiator cool the coolant delivered to the engine by an Edelbrock water pump. The LS3 was installed by CCHR with final tuning performed by Chris Lovett and Wichita Dyno. Testing showed 401 hp at 6,406 rpm at the rear tires; the torque reading was 392 lb-ft at 4,775 rpm. Chance Transmissions in Wichita assembled the Chevy 4L85E with a SuperMatic torque converter, modified with extra clutch plates, increased fluid pressure, and a firmer-shift valvebody. Inland Truck Parts supplied the aluminum driveshaft.
Bruce worked with Walt Curry at Walt’s Upholstery in Mulvane to design the interior. The dash, modified at CCHR, features a Bedwood curly maple panel that circles the interior. Dakota Digital created a new instrument cluster to fit inside the renovated original housing. A leather-wrapped CON2R Series One steering wheel was customized with a Cadillac trunk emblem horn button and mounted on an ididit column.
Curry modified a pair of heated and cooled seats from a 2016 Mustang GT350 and created rear seats from scratch. The leather upholstery is a combination of squash and cinnamon hides, in smooth and perforated textures. V emblems were added to the upper seats. CCHR built the console. The head unit for the Kenwood GPS/phone/audio system and Vintage Air control knobs are surrounded by a custom bezel featuring backlit, stencil-cut Cadillac script. Power window switches, cup holders, e-Level, air ride controls, and seat temp controls, can be hidden by a sliding cover; a linear actuator allows opening and closing with the touch of a button.
Even with more than 10,000 cars competing for our attention at the 2017 Street Rod Nationals, the Cadillac could not be missed and was an obvious choice as a Top 100 winner. A few months later, Bruce and Cheryl’s Sedanette faced more competition as we whittled our 100 winners down to a single vehicle to honor as the cream of this year’s crop, the 2017 Painless Performance Products/STREET RODDER Street Rod of the Year.
