Back when this was built 70′s Alberta was rolling in the oil money, and they intended this pedway to be a place to be, to have activities, have people gather.
Then the 80′s bust happened, and sure they finished building it, but there wasn’t really money for all the programming that was not super there.
Attempts have been made (tours, events) throughout the years to make this a place, but seeing as they tore out the greenery, this place is simply an eerie vast place with art of ducks and other such things.
The type of place you go to and see a cryptid politician walking past you trying to hurry to a better place.
Anyways a fun source is “Alberta Legislature pedway a far cry from its former glory” by Matthew Black (Edmonton Journal, February 6, 2023) [link]

@xxravenbirbxx @kaiju-kisser Except this isn't about the US President, this is about the US legislative bodies, which elect their members from single-member districts* using first past the post**, exactly the same as how the UK, Canada, Malaysia, Nigeria, and a whole lot of other states elect their legislative bodies. Except all of them have more than two parties represented in their legislatures. Hell, look at how many parties are represented in the Lok Sabha.
Don't get me wrong, FPTP is a bad system, and electoral reform is needed everywhere it exists. But the claims made by US Americans (never anyone else!) display not just a lack of knowledge, but a lack of awareness that they lack that knowledge. And this claim that FPTP cannot elect third parties is, I'd say, pretty clearly the result of US chauvinism. The US uses FPTP and only has two parties, therefore FPTP can only produce two-party systems, according to such people. Ignore any other possible reasons for the rot. Yeah, you have to completely tune out elections in dozens of countries, including two extremely close US trade partners and allies***, but US Americans have proven themselves remarkably good at doing that.
*The US Senate has two-member districts, actually, but the elections for each member are offset from each other usually, and even when they co-occur they're held separately so it's not meaningfully different from a single-member district.
**There are a few US states that use different rules for voting, and for whatever fucking reason US states run federal elections so they can apply their special systems to federal elections. Bizarre country.
***Hey did you know that Canada currently has a minority government? I bet if you're US American you didn't.
Okay what exactly is up with US Americans (and hardly anyone else) claiming that first past the post "inevitably results in two parties"? Because that's, like, clearly untrue, on account of there are many legislative bodies elected by FPTP with multiple parties in them. And I have no idea how US Americans are seemingly so unaware of this. Hell, the UK general election happened just recently, and I saw tons of discussion of why FPTP sucks specifically in the context of a multiple-party system. Do US Americans not know about the Lib Dems? Or the Greens? Or Ref*rm? Or the SNP?
#catgirltxt#fun fact out of all the provincial legislatures and yukon only alberta lacks multiple parties represented in its legislature#and i mean they're all fptp single-member constituencies#so clearly there's something else wrong with the us

Alberta's premier shared new details Tuesday about her government's proposed gender legislation. Danielle Smith will introduce it when the Alberta legislature's fall session starts near the end of October. In a six-minute video posted to social media, Smith went over the points of her policy, much of which has already been released. One new detail involves 16- and 17-year-olds choosing to use a different name or pronoun at school. "In those extremely rare circumstances where a teacher feels that a child might be at risk should the parents be notified of a desired name or pronoun change, Alberta Education will provide a protocol to ensure the protection of that child throughout the parental notification process," Smith said in the video.

Alberta government takes aim at GHG emissions cap, proposes rules on trespass and data gathering News Buzz
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says her government is eyeing a number of steps to challenge the proposed federal greenhouse gas emissions cap. Announcing an upcoming motion under her Alberta Sovereignty within a United Canada Act on Tuesday, Smith said the government plans to challenge the cap in court when or if it becomes law, and that it will take the steps necessary to give the province…

I feel like the political history of Alberta has to be very unusual among democracies.
Since becoming a province in 1905, no political party has governed the province more than once (by that I mean, winning power, losing power, then winning power again); in fact, in all but one case (the recent NDP government of 2015-2019) the province has been governed for over a decade (often much more than a decade) by the same party, but once that party loses power it collapses almost entirely and disappears within a decade or less. The only exception is the Alberta Liberals, who were the first party to govern the province and still exist today but are a completely irrelevant third party with no seats in the legislature.
Furthermore on two occasions the party that won power had absolutely no conception that that was something they were even allowed to do (the United Farmers of Alberta in 1921 and the Social Credit Party in 1935) and so they had no formal party structure let alone a leader, and they had to figure out who would be their leader after they'd already won the election.
Also the United Farmers who governed the province between 1921 and 1935 still exist, but are no longer a political party, they're an agricultural and farm equipment supply store.

We had a rally before the Alberta Legislature today to oppose Danielle Smith’s cruel anti-trans policies. Here is the speech I read:
Danielle Smith is a hypocrite. She says parental rights, but what about the parents who want to support their child accessing gender-affirming care? What about the parents who want their child to know about Two-Spirit, queer, and trans people and receive quality sex education, but will have that choice taken away because of her policy?
She says she wants to keep trans youth’s choices open, but then turns around and bans puberty blockers, which exist precisely to give youth more time.
She says she only wants the best for trans youth, but she threatens to override their constitutionally guaranteed right to life, liberty, and security of the person. How can threatening the life, liberty, and security of a child ever be in their best interest?
Her words are lies. Her policies are a cover for the Tucker Carlsons of the world. For those people who want nothing more than for trans people to be kicked out of society, relegated to the shadow of the closet or the mound of an early grave.
She won’t succeed. They will not succeed. They cannot succeed because—even if they manage to pass their policies, even if they manage to circumvent the constitution and its Charter—they will never be able to stop us from fostering the pockets of care, love, and community that sustain life.
They will never stop us from reminding trans kids every single day that they are worth all we have, that they deserve all we have, and that they can and will grow up into the flourishing adults that I know they will be. This truth, I feel it all the way into the deepest recesses of my heart. Just as others’ love has nourished us, so will we nourish others with our love.
Despite it all, we will win. We will never stop fighting. We are tireless. And when we tire of fighting, we will find our second wind and only come back stronger. Danielle Smith and her UCP cronies will not know a second of rest until these policies are buried and they are ousted from power for their failures.
This is not the end of a story. This is not the end of our story. In the end, we will win. No matter how long it takes. Because trans people are worth it. Trans kids are worth it. They breathe spirit into the world. They bring light to each and every one of our lives. Trans people are divine. And what is light and spirit cannot lose. Despite it all, we will win.

We're having a super fun time in Alberta right now. The UCP has released some very concerning anti-trans legislature that if passed could come into effect next year and seriously harm trans and gender diverse youth in particular.
#I can't stop thinking about this teacher who can't come out but keeps showing up to these rallies#if your own existence as a teacher isn't safe I can't imagine having to navigate the support (or lack there of) for your queer students#heartbreaking#it's already hard for people to get the support and healthcare they need#why are we making it even harder#alberta
