Pottery question: can you please describe the reclaim process?
Sure! In a nutshell: save all viable clay scraps to be remade into usable clay, especially since our normal clay supplier (that supplies 20% of surrounding ceramists) got wiped out by Helene.
It starts with the studio collecting unwanted scraps and unfired mistakes, throwing sludge, and trimmings in big trashcans to slake down into sludge. The picture I posted last night is of our drying troughs that we use to dry that sludge to a solid but soft consistency. Before it firms up we use that step to pick out any tools or non-clay items that may have gotten in the clay.
We also use those troughs to dry up trash clay that we can’t use, whether it’s the nasty sludge from the sink traps or clay that has a colored slip on it (or underglaze). Our studio slips have a deflocculant, which acts as a hydrophobic material that won’t let clay set up.
Once the clay is firm and cut into bricks (like the picture!) it’s then my job to cut it down further and run it through our pugmill… or I would have but it’s still broken 🥲. That’s basically a big drum with sharp blades to cut and mix the clay into a consistent body, then pushed out through a tapered barrel with a vacuum air compressor pump to produce compressed logs of clay ready to be reused! I joke it’s my free YMCA weight lifting since those troughs hold ~400lbs of clay and I move it all around lol.
