#After Dark Era-- current timeframe

Soukoku is amazing and all that shit but if they become canon anytime soon I'm gonna be disappointed.
If they were to start dating right now it would go terribly. They have some very complicated feelings for each other and I don't think even they know what they are.
Do I want my ship to be canon? Yes but moreover I want my ship to be done justice and it being canon right now would do the opposite. It makes no damn sense unless Asagiri wants to give us some more background. And I know it's a popular headcanon that they hooked up already but my issue with people saying that they probably dated in the mafia but again it just doesn't make sense.
With what we know about both the characters and the timeline they'd have had to get together between the Dragon Head Conflict and Dark Era. And given how the characters are in that timeframe neither of them would have been able to hold a relationship, let alone one with each other. Also current arc Dazai would've boughten up the fact they used to date at some point even if only for shock value. Man would be bringing that up regularly.
Now some evidence to back up why that's the timeframe we have for that. Stormbringer is one of the best pieces of canon material we have for proving that Dazai cares for Chuuya. However Chuuya refers to Dazai as the person he hates most in Stormbringer, which so clearly they wouldn't have been together during that, because unlike his usual "I hate him"s that one seems like he meant it. Most likely due to Chuuya projecting his issues with himself onto Dazai.
Now you read Dead Apple and you get your proof that Chuuya cared about Dazai. (Also more Dazai caring for Chuuya but that dude's so obviously whipped I'm not going over it again) And obviously Dazai left after Dark Era. Theorize about them having seen each other during those four years if you want but if they had there'd be no reason to test each other like they do in the dungeon scene.
Now since they can't have already been together that means that they'd have to get together sometime around or after the prison. However for them to actually do well in a relationship, as they both deserve to, they both have to do some major internal work.
So in summary, I'd like them to be canon but not at the detriment of their complex dynamic.
And I know Asagiri said he won't make anything canon but I'm gonna play my hypothetical games.
-E

tell me bout all your wips
yippee!!!
ok in order from "front burner" to "back burner" (an arbitrary decision that changes all the time and does not mean anything for publishing timeframe):
- buck 1.0/begins tommy: i've posted about this, i mess with the timeline a bit and tommy is buck's mentor through his probie term. they have nasty toxic workplace sex that makes them both worse. tagged with "fic tag: closet case/1.0". current title is "fuck my face, closet case"
- eddie breakdown fic: eddie has a breakdown after chris leaves and attempts suicide. it's a really angsty fic but with a happy ending because i can't do MCD. also a flagrant attempt for me to process having a mentally ill father through christopher. current title is "all your letters in the sand cannot heal me like your hand"
- eviller doug au: another REALLY dark fic where doug grooms buck when he's a teenager (14-17) which is also a trauma processing fic for me (don't ask why i have 2 trauma processing fics so far up the front of this list i've had a bad month). current title is "HONEY, I'M HOME"
- old school kidfic: the 118 get Blasted With Lasers and it temporarily de-ages them physically and mentally by ~25 years. bobby is ~33, hen and chim are both ~15, eddie is 11, buck is 6
- ecologist!buck au: MY BABY MY BELOVED MY DEAREST. based in my own personal experiences as an ecologist. buck moves in next to eddie and starts turning his house into an ecologists paradise, chris takes immediate interest, eddie is sexually repressed about the hot smart beefy sweaty man next door who keeps adopting busted up animals. maddie is also a marine biologist and there's an extensive b plot about madney falling in love via maddie helping chim overcome his fear of animals. and there's also a lobster heist. tommy guest stars as a wildlife rehabilitater. working title is "kitchen table ecology" snip uploaded before i started my fic tagging system :(
- maddie single mom au: maddie stays with doug a little longer and gets pregnant, she leaves him ~2020 instead of ~2019 and is one of the women from the mudslide house. madney-centric
- eddie adopts a cat: exactly what it says on the box. set during the eddie breakdown era. one snip uploaded under "fic tag: magnolia"
honorable mention: the buddie qpr fic that's currently 75% uploaded and i went 2 years without updating i'm so sorry to everyone who's enjoyed that fic so far i promise it'll get done at some point 💀
EVEN THESE ARE NOT ALL MY WIPS THESE ARE JUST THE ONES WITH MORE THAN A FEW PAGES WRITTEN
#hi everyone who followed for the 3 posts that broke containment i'm fucking insane by the way#asks#jordan 🥰#fic tag: closet case/1.0#fic tag: magnolia#fic tag: kitchen table ecology#fic tag: honey i'm home#fic tag: letters in the sand#fic tag: old school kidfic

Taylor gave us back our girlhood!!
I have listened to @taylorswift since I was a little girl (2nd grade)!! I am 25 now, and not much has changed, but also, Everything Has Changed, if you get what I'm saying.
In 2022, I left a six year long abusive relationship, one that I prayed for the courage to leave every day for years. Afterwards, he villainized me, weaponized every detail of my life, twisted and turned the way things happened, and gaslit and lied and manipulated until I second-guessed every moment I'd had - every assault, every fight, every round of screaming, every time he'd hit a wall or cheated or lied or physically hurt me. I felt like I was in a dark hole I'd never climb out of.
That changed, however, when I met my current partner, who is everything I never had before, and so much more. Since meeting him, I have learned what love is supposed to feel like. I finally understand all of the love songs I've dreamed about, and it is amazing.
But even with that love, and that support, that didn't stop me from feeling crazy about my ex situation. Because that's what abusers do. They abuse you, until there's nothing fucking left. This August, however, I got to take back my story, when I was introduced to the woman he (my ex) dated after me. And found out that we had very similar experience (though hers was in a much more condensed timeframe). When she told me the things he did to her, I did everything short of puking out of horror. It was one thing to do them to me, but how could he do them to her?
But then she told me something else, something that shifted our entire friendship. She told me that when she left him, she remembered that from what she knew of me, I was a Swiftie, and she thought that maybe Taylor would be able to make her life a little bit better. And now, she loves this lady as much as I do.
We have stayed up so many nights over the past few months trying to crack codes, find easter eggs, debating what songs are best, bonding over Would've Could've Should've and Clean, discussing Taylor tattoos. And now, she's going with me and my little sister to the Eras Tour on Indy Night 2 to see Taylor for the first time in her life.
We cannot take back the moments we had to hurt over this man, but we can take every moment forward to bond over our healing, and our joy, and our loves of art and music and my chemical romance and taylor swift, and that, I think, is the coolest form of friendship. Thank you, taylor, for having songs for everything, and for reminding us both that the best people in life are free. We'll see you in indy!! 😭😭🥳😍🫶

Hello, what I meant by my Darkiplier ask is: did WKM happen in this au? Did Damien and Celine exist?
OOOOOHHHH.
Hmmm. So I'm gonna go with a solid yes, although that leads to the question of how specifically things played out. Forgive me as I think "aloud" for a second:
Darkiplier exists in this AU, though he actually has a position in the government and exists in tenuous accord with King Mark, unlike Anti and King Sean. This means that SOMETHING happened to make two people become one person, leading to Dark's existence. Additionally, there is the time period framing to consider... AHA.
Haneul's history and legacy as a kingdom stretches far further into the past than that of most other kingdoms in Tirónar, thanks to their ability to outlast the Occupation Era. This gives us a much wider timespan to work with.
Therefore, the best fit would be that WKM took place several generations prior to the AU's modern history, likely in the years immediately after Waldren's departure from the continent (to reflect the postwar era of the show) in the early-to-mid 1500s.
Everyone who has a still-existing or parallel character in modern Markiplier lore (i.e. Will and Warfstache) are ancestors or precursors to their modern counterparts in some capacity.
Perhaps Damien and Celine were part of a noble family and were Lord Dark's ancestors. Maybe the modern Wilford is the bastard son of Will and Celine. The exact relation would depend on the timeframe (which I currently don't have the notes on hand to figure out, typing this on my phone as I am), but a connection would exist.
As for the weird house demon magic nonsense and the whole bit where Lord Dark cannonically (in the AU) has some sort of weird magic, I think veterans of this AU know where this bit is going...
Fae magic. 🤣
Yes, I know, it's my catch-all for anything that doesn't fit the established rules of the universe, but the idea of a fae being that decides to take the form of a house (or at least some part of it) does make the most sense for that particular element, at least. And from there, the idea that this being follows around Lord Dark in some capacity or perhaps even IS Lord Dark is an interesting concept.
Of course, just like the real WKM lore, the specifics of that relationship will probably remain vague. What Darks current dynamic with this particular fae being is? Who knows.
I think this is probably the best interpretation for the lore of the AU because it carries the major elements and themes of WKM into this fantasy setting, namely the idea of legacy, curses, unreliable narrators, messy relationships, and incomprehensible supernatural nonsense.
I might go back and nail down some more specific details of how WKM fits later, but for now, this at least gives a framework. If you have any ideas, feel free to share them! This AU is built almost entirely on this sort of brainstorming and back-and-forth, after all.
Thanks for the question!!!

Star Wars: Visions - Episode 7: The Elder
Onward into the last trio of Visions episodes! This has been nothing but enjoyable thus far, and I’ve heard good things about these last three. Episode 7: The Elder Produced By: Trigger Inc. Directed By: Masahiko Otsuka After six episodes, we finally have one that definitively takes place in the Republic era. I’ve been regarding these shorts’ indeterminate time periods as I see them, but with a bit of misfiring: the one I thought worked perfectly in the post-ROTJ era turned out to take place far in the past (and in an alternate take on the series), and the one I thought would have worked well as an Old Republic piece turned out to be intended as a far-flung sequel. But this time, we’ve got a relatively solid timeframe established in the short itself. Some time during the time of the Galactic Republic, two Jedi - a master and his padawan - patrol the Outer Rim when they are suddenly distracted by a sudden flare-up in the Force: a call to something dark and unknown. Arriving on a backwater planet, they track this disturbance to a mysterious old man who traveled into the mountains recently. But something seems wrong, and the more they investigate the more it they find ties from this old man to the thought long-dead Sith, as well as hints that the whole encounter might just be a trap...
This is another “Jedi arrives at a simple village, and is forced into a battle with a darksider“ story - unsurprising, when narratives like that are so popular, and each of the short films were made independently of one another. This time, much more attention is placed on the darksider themselves. The setting of this one illustrates its tension: this is a time period before The Phantom Menace where the Sith were believed extinct, so sudden clues to imply they may still be around are unbelievable and deeply unnerving to the main characters - and this slow unsettled atmosphere composes the center of the short. In the end, the heroes defeat the villain, but obtain no answers - as they must not, for the Sith won’t reveal themselves for some time - and the story ends with them moving on, unsure.
The master and apprentice are fun characters. Not quite as developed as some of the other characters we’ve seen thus far, but they do have a fairly fun banter to them. It’s a trend that masters and apprentices end up countering each other in personality to a degree in Star Wars - wilder masters beget more serious padawans, and vice versa - and it continues here: the master being a dour, cautious and somewhat paranoid sort, whereas the padawan is emotionally expressive, lacking in worry and ever-direct in his words and actions. You can tell that they are wildly unprepared for what they are about to walk into - even the master, who is knowledgeable and powerful enough to face it regardless - and that endears them to the audience as the story goes on.
The antagonist is is the biggest draw, however. A murderous swordsman type: obsessed with nothing but the fight and proving his skills in battle by luring hapless opponents into battles to the death. It’s a character type that’s fairly common in samurai narratives, and thus one which I’ve always been surprised to see so little off in Star Wars media. Eschewing most of the Sith ideology, the Elder only cares about bigger and bigger challenges, deadlier and deadlier stakes. He is introduced having massacred a giant monster, and ends gleefully throwing himself into a fight with someone he knows may be his better, murdering and manipulating all the way to ensure that the fight happens. And the fight itself reminded me somewhat of the fights from the Filoni series, particularly the Obi-Wan and Maul fight in Rebels where the visual direction was all about getting more out of less. The motions are less elaborate, but are instead quick and deadly, which ups the impact. The Sith having a pair of light-shortswords made espeiclaly for an interesting fight - digressing again, but I’ve always felt branching out into different kinds of lightsaber weaponry would allow the series to evolve the swordsmanship aspect of the Jedi and other force users a bit more. The idea of giving Rey a light-pike, for instance, was one that got a lot of traction for a while and one I wish the films had adopted. There’s a degree of baby steps in regards to how versatile the Jedi can be that the main series tends to adhere to whereas these short films in general have not felt constrained by - whereas the light-weedwhacker of The Duel is obviously a bit excessive, the idea of shortswords or longswords for Jedi, or other varieties of bladed weapons, is something imo the series could well look into. If there was one thing that felt off about his one, on the other hand, it was the animation as a whole. It isn’t something I’m unfamiliar with, watching anime as much as I do you’re sure to find a few series that do the same thing, but it may be a bit jarring to go from the previous short films - which were very fluid and expressive in animation - to this one, which is a lot more stiff. Everything is very intricately and elaborately drawn - with deeply etched character designs and vivid backgrounds - but very limited in animation, with less physical emotion and range. A curious choice, given how Trigger’s other film - The Twins - in this set was the complete opposite: extremely animated in all respects. Characters mostly just move their lips and incline their heads, until the fight starts - and the fight itself is, again, an example of getting more out of less. There are thus times in the short where the shot almost appears to be static for long periods of time. This is, once more, a stylistic choice which I am not unfamiliar with, but I’m not as sure that it affords well to the film’s story. But it does have the effect of also drawing attention to the antagonist - The Elder himself is by far the most vividly animated character in the story, and it makes him and his menace fly off the screen in comparison. All in all, a good episode. But that’s not the only thing we’re here to look at. As you’ve probably cottoned onto by now if you’ve been reading all of these, the Visions shorts are all currently non-canon. However, in a franchise like Star Wars it is not uncommon for installments like this to get examined for official continuance if they have a lot of support from us, the fans, and - importantly - if they fit well into the universe. So here, we’re also looking at whether each short fits into the universe, and how well. And what are the chances of this one fitting into the universe? Pretty Good Odds. This short was careful to design itself such that it could easily fit into the time period it takes place in: another backwater planet with a sheltered culture, making it unlikely to contradict anything, two remote Jedi with a far flung assignment also unlikely to contradict anything, and the characteristics of the setting are actually baked into the plot: the Jedi of this time have no idea extant Sith still exist, and thus are left stymied by the mystery this Elder presents. In the end, they obtain no answers, either: only smoke and ambiguity of a lost lead. So I could easily see this being popped right into the continuity with no hassle to anyone. And it would definitely be interesting to see: did the Elder really leave the Sith to pursue his own bloodlust. If so... that was his history? If this short accomplishes one thing, it’s delivering on the mystique surrounding the SIth. Not to mention giving the world a few more nightmare faces to dream about - nobody in the Star Wars universe is scarier than a Sith on the prowl...

hey from one nd person to another the comic where fm gordon says a slur seems kind of in poor taste. ik ur not intentionally making light of it and tht occurring in fm should be criticized but while you dont make it out to be a good thing making jokes about it and calling him a "slurboy" is kind of questionable? it makes it seem more like a plotpoint and angst rather than the creator of fm genuinely fucking up in the past (and having moved on from it)! i think exploring fm coming to terms with being nd is a good idea but this isnt the best way to do it. if you want me to explain my point more lmk if/when u post this and i will! someone already made a post abt it but it was kinda strongly worded and i wanted to approach you more calmly because i genuinely dont want to call you out or start drama or anything ;-;
first off thank you for being civil and patient with me i appreciate this ask a lot- also this got long- im not in a flying rage or anything when i bold or emphasis text, i just needed it also for my own readability and since im not the best at wording- hopefully this hellsite works and my response is under the cut
i would like to know how is it in poor taste when freemind explicitly gets clocked at the very end for saying it. the entire point of the comic was to show that saying the r slur has existed in his source and is bad
im not sure how much more direct i can get, with the disclaimer/warning list growing longer and longer and out there for a huge sign that says “this au can get dark as fuck and these subject matters are treated seriously/not something to mess around with.” Like yes, there are some jokes in the asks and other comics, but that specific comic is not supposed to be “haha thats funny”. it has a serious tone using a rough sketch style bc i was super tired and wanted to vent
was it just the direct reference to it that just made people uncomfortable? because thats 100% understandable, and i made sure i tagged it appropriately (although admittedly, a little bit late since i thought the filter would catch at least the main thing)
i think what some people somehow got from it is “exploring sensitive content = endorsing said content” which! that is not the intent! i absolutely do not want people saying that word! I don’t want people thinking that is any way okay for this character to say
its more of a damned if i do address it, damned if i dont.
if it never comes up, people are gonna assume that ‘oh this character says slurs and is shit, surely the creator or fan-creator MUST be okay with it and woobifies freemind and absolves him of any mistakes’ or something like that. no. this asshole has an arc and i want to do it right. its serious and i think it shouldn’t be shoved under the rug
and people just. dont want to read for context for whatever reason. theyll start watching it and get taken aback by the slur and start blaming me ‘hey you never warned for this’ when very early on i keep mentioning over and over ‘you dont have to watch it if you dont want to! This has slurs and 2000s internet brand humor/style’ You really dont, I’m not forcing you to watch it- Literally all you need to know is either canon half life or hl/vrai. thats it. fm mostly follows hl1 with very slight changes.
so i had to make something that:
1. warns people who arent aware and dont want to go through my asks or about/warning pages (for whatever reason) and just want to see the art
2. also NOT downplay freemind’s canon assholery. listen, i kinda despise writing mean and cruel characters, theyre hard to do, and a lot of people get shit for doing it wrong or people going “character = author”
i’ve also considered leaving the bubbles blank, but then people could fill it with whatever they want, then blame me for being vague. or they’d fill it in with a different kind of slur that freemind has never used, even if he MIGHT be the type to do that. I needed to explicitly mention that it is ableist slur. There are shitty racist and other problematic jokes, but never those kinds of extreme racial slurs to my knowledge.
Although I do see your point that maybe joking about it outside of the serious stuff might not be the best route. The slurboy jokes are getting stale, and I will try a better way to remind people.
The thing that gets to me is that it feels people are more than ready to defend either Ross Scott or Gordon Freeman the fictonal character himself. I don’t??? really care for Ross Scott, so I don’t know if he’s ever brought it up specifically. I’m not really calling him out or cancelling him. Idc for some white man’s feelings, im only bringing the timeframe of That era and reworking it to fit in This current era.
And I hate to break it to people: Gordon Freeman is a blank slate character, you can project whatever the hell you want on him as long as it’s not freakshit illegal garbage. The machinimas (fm, hl/vrai) do have SOME characterization that I want to nail down. It fucking sucks when characters are ooc, and I’m trying not to do that, even if it means sacrificing some comfort. But still mostly staying in my comfort zone if that makes sense
Now about the callout that I do not want to engage with the op directly:
Honestly im very surprised the comic was called out when i just. thought my stuff is relatively tame on exploring the bad shit canon freemind does. ive seen him in fancontent where they really dont hold back and its still played off as ‘kinda funny’ tone.
I really don’t know if people just want any reason to hate me for whatever reason. That’s fine I guess, I can’t please everyone and they dont have to like me.
But like. isn’t it so much easier for the op of that to block me and the post and move on. Why kick up such a fuss. I can see that thinly veiled death threat of a vague. That’s pretty fucked up- Like holy fucking god, you do not have to like my stuff. I’m not holding you at knifepoint to like my stuff. I’ve specifically made two different tags (one general au, one specific au) if anyone wants to blacklist it for their own reasons I do not need to know. I don’t want to know.
You’re allowed to be uncomfortable. You’re allowed to unfollow/blacklist/block.
However you just don’t go ranting about it for something you horribly misinterpreted. If it bothers you so badly, literally just. drop me a message to clarify. thats it. or save yourself the time and block me.
I’ve blocked the op for both our sakes, but if anyone wants to send this post to them, then thats fine. I don’t want anything to do with them.
I don’t want to link the post and blow it up. I just want shit clarified, dropped and we can move the fuck on with our lives.
If you’re reading this and don’t know what the post is, please don’t bother. I do not want people going after the op with threats, please keep it civil, I’d prefer if you don’t engage with the post at all on my behalf.
Despite this huge wall of text, I do not want this to be a big deal, so please don’t ask me about the details.
_
As for anon, feel free to dm me either on here or. Maybe on discord if you’d still like to suggest or have something more cleared up. I’m still willing to hear any kind of feedback, and i want to thank you again for being reasonable about this

The Lord of the Rings Almost Killed Off One of the Hobbits
https://ift.tt/2THdh6D
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy’s $2.9 billion collective worldwide gross and 17 Academy Award wins (one of which was for Best Picture,) certainly make a case for the 2001-2003 films being the product of a winning formula, both production-wise and plot-wise. However, the process of getting the grandiose, once-unfathomable project off the ground naturally involved producers pressuring director Peter Jackson to implement ideas often contradictory to the source material. Apparently, one such idea would have seen one of the film’s four hobbits die!
While the more loquacious half of Lord of the Rings’ onscreen hobbits, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd—Meriadoc “Merry” Brandybuck and Peregrin “Pippin” Took, respectively—have told myriad stories about life on the set across the past few decades through interviews and the films’ insightfully entertaining DVD commentary, the duo brought new anecdotes in an interview with IGN promoting their recently launched, Rings-heavy podcast, The Friendship Onion. According to them, there was a brief period in production during which Jackson was being “pressured from above” (presumably New Line Cinema,) to sacrifice at least one of the film’s four hobbits—of course, with the other two being Elijah Wood’s Frodo Baggins and Sean Astin’s Samwise Gamgee—for a development that would clearly contradict the text of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels.
While the identity of the specific hobbit producers wished to see relegated to taking second breakfast in the great beyond was not revealed, Monaghan offers a theory, stating, “It’s a good job that didn’t happen, because it would have been me,” he laughed. “It definitely would have. There’s no way they are killing Frodo and Sam, and the only ones that would be left would be Merry and Pippin. They wouldn’t kill Pippin because Pippin has a really strong story with Gandalf. It would have definitely been me. I think Pete quite rightly was like, ‘This is a luminary piece of written work, and we need to stick close to the text.’ So, he stuck by his guns. Yeah, I’m thankful that didn’t happen.”

Dark Alliance Reminds Us We Need a Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Remaster
By Matthew Byrd
Much to the gratitude of Monaghan and Tolkien purists everywhere, Jackson won that particular battle in the end, thereby leaving the trilogy as a more authentic take on the text. However, while the notion of actually making a casualty of one of the beloved hobbits might seem outrageous to moviegoers, especially those with intimate knowledge of the Middle Earth mythos, it was actually a sound suggestion from a purely dramatic standpoint. After all, as with Bilbo Baggins in preceding story The Hobbit, the diminutive hole-dwellers from the Shire were meant to represent average people, unprepared for the travails of life away from home, who, during times of war, find bravery within themselves when thrust into overwhelming circumstances. Pertinently, with strong bonds having been forged amongst comrades during said circumstances, the loss of one yields a dramatic payoff that’s hard to resist from a narrative perspective. Notwithstanding The Fellowship of the Rings‘ fateful death of Boromir, such a death wouldn’t even be without precedence, since, in adhering to the literary lore, 2014’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies famously featured the deaths of the party’s two youngest, most energetic dwarves, Kili and Fili, in the climactic moments of Jackson’s prequel trilogy.
If, as Monaghan theorizes, Merry was set to be sacrificed in the name of plot pathos, then it likely would have occurred during Return of the King’s Battle of the Pelennor Fields, during which Merry—after being forbade by King Théoden—secretly joined a disguised Éowyn to participate in the Kingdom of Rohan’s horseback counter-attack against the siege forces of Mordor orcs—and later the oliphaunt-riding humans of the Haradrim—outside of Gondor. Merry’s role in the battle was the clear culmination of an arc that saw him go from a crop-thieving ne’er-do-well to sword-wielding battlefield hero, and highlighted him at his highest point. He also proved integral to the victory when he stabbed the Witch King of Angmar in the back—injuring himself in the process—which allowed Éowyn to make the iconic “I am no man” deathblow to the head, taking the enemy’s most powerful player off the board. Yet, Merry was left in bad shape by the end of the battle, found barely cognizant by a wandering Pippin in the aftermath, facilitating one of the film’s many emotional reunions. This moment could have been repurposed into Merry’s death scene, after which a perturbed Pippin would be motivated for vengeance in the ensuing, trilogy-climactic Battle at the Black Gate, thereby completing his own arc.
New Line Cinema
While Jackson had to make several changes from the source material—mostly regarding the timeframe and segments that detracted from the main plot—to make The Lord of the Rings’s chronicle-styled prose work on the big screen, he also knew that the understated narrative in the periphery from Tolkien’s extensive lore was an intangible quality that separated this mythos from other fantasy offerings. Indeed, the appendices included at the end of the novel trilogy were a consistent source of context-setting backstories that Jackson wove into the main narrative of the movies. Case in point, in the novels, the movie-prominent romance of Aragorn and Arwen was primarily told in the appendices, outside the main content. Likewise, Tolkien crafted full fates for our foursome of hobbits, including Merry, who ended up marrying Estella Bolger and becoming a key member of the Shire’s leadership as the Master of Buckland. The backstory is so extensive that it also reveals when Merry and Pippin died, after which they were entombed with honor over in Gondor, later joined by King Aragorn Elessar himself. Consequently, it would have seemed disrespectful to dismiss such extensive stories by Tolkien.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Regardless, fans of The Lord of the Rings will soon have no shortage of new onscreen content, with Amazon’s untitled prequel series—set thousands of years before the main story—currently in production and possibly set to premiere either by the end of 2021 or sometime into 2022. Moreover, an anime feature focused on the namesake of famous fortress Helm’s Deep, titled The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, is also in development from Warner Bros. and New Line. Given the eras in which these offerings take place, fans can likely breathe a sigh of relief for poor Merry.

Reimagining ATLA's Water Tribes and Air Nomads:
I love Avatar so much you guys, it's a masterpiece in writing and worldbuilding, but over the years I've sat and thought over it, I've thought up some ideas. In the show, the Air Nomads and Water Tribes aren't as fleshed out as the Fire Nation or Earth Kingdom, so as a worldbuilding exercise, I fleshed them out some more, with some slight rewriting.
The Water Tribes:
There are 2 types of Water Tribes - polar hunter-gatherer icebending tribes who developed waterbending as a result of being surrounded by ice and water(and use it to mass-hunt sea life and build ice houses, like the Arctic cultures they're based on), - and tropical seafarers who navigate a large ocean filled with islands, based on Austronesians and other Pacific peoples, who used ocean currents and star maps to navigate the vast oceans, and diverged into a number of different Pacific nations with the Austronesian expansion(being surrounded by a vast ocean, they'd develop waterbending separately than the poles).
The Pacific Water Tribe would have a large number of smaller "tribes" like how the polar tribes are divided into North and South, with some being inspired by Aboriginal Australians and Mississippians(hence boomerangs and other Oceanian influences in the polar Water Tribe, and also the swamp tribe), and as the Fire Nation is a tropical island nation that colonized nearby coastal territories, a number of these Water Tribes will be colonized by the Fire Nation, similar to the Earth kingdom, some of the earliest colonies in the Fire Nation's expansion.
Given both of their cultures have the shared art of waterbending(and more recently, both being colonized by the Fire Nation), the polar and tropical tribes have a kinship with each other, and welcome other Water Tribe people and assist them in their voyages(better explaining how polar tribes can cross the entire earth from pole to pole, going through vastly different climates, in ships made from just bone and animal hide). Given Water is the element of change and adaptability (a large number of tribes united by a common bending style developed in different occasions to suit their environment) and heart and community (resisting the Fire Nation and cultural camaraderie and hospitality to other Tribespeople even if they aren't a part of your tribe, along with the theme of indigenous unity forming in the wake of colonization, which could be tied to the element of Water), these would fit pretty in line with what Water represents in Avatar.
Sokka and Katara would meet other Water Tribes and the people that make them up in Book 1 as they travel from pole to pole, and learn about things like seafaring by sensing the ocean and looking to the moon's astral companions, along with have small bits of community and hospitality when they enter Water Tribe territories along their way. There would be a recurring character a la Jet or Suki from one of these new tribes.
Lastly, in real life, day and night cycles behave very differently in polar regions: at the poles of the earth, an entire year is 6 months of darkness and night, followed by the sun rising and not setting for another 6 months. This is called the midnight sun effect(and is something Sokka actually references in the first episode of the series, despite the sun and moon rising and setting in normal 24 hour cycles in the show). Given how Waterbending and Firebending are given strength by the sun and moon, this would be a great detail to add to Book 1, perhaps with the eventual sunrise/set in the Northern Water Tribe being a timeframe they need to reach the tribe before it occurs, as it would be such an important event.
Also, as mentioned in a previous post I made, I like the idea of the spirit portals on each pole being connected, and how the Polar Water Tribes became 'sister tribes' before they could circumnavigate the globe, along with how the Ocean and Moon spirit moved between the North and South Water Tribes on a cycle, before the Fire Nation severed the portal with the spiritual wound they inflicted on the world with their genocide of the Air Nomads and Southern Water Tribe, a visualization of the spiritual damage they are doing on the world, and one that would eventually heal decades later in Korra's era after reparations are made.
The Air Nomads:
The Air Nomads were not wiped out entirely in Sozin's genocide - Aang is not the last person of his culture. In real life, genocides do not destroy a culture or people entirely - they are still alive, often with their culture critically endangered and their presence erased and suppressed so that many people do not think they even exist anymore, see how Americans treat the original inhabitants of our continents that White Europeans tried to wipe out(and never fully succeeded in). I didn't mind the Air Nomads being revived and Sky Bisons miraculously surviving in Korra for this reason, a more realistic tragedy for Aang(aside from having ran away and not been able to interfere when the genocide of his people started and losing all his friends and family over the 100 year time skip) would be dealing with the actual effects of genocide and being a member of a culture that the Fire Nation drove to endangerment and is deeply wounded and scarred from a systemic genocide against them.
Aang would meet other Air Nomads, and we'd get a character who was an Air Nomad too, possibly showing the cultural differences between the 4 temples(which don't have that weird worldbuilding about gender segregation, also, not every Air Nomad would be an Airbender like the creators have stated). This would also help explain why the Sandbenders knew what specialized equipment to use to capture Appa when airbenders and sky bisons haven't existed for 100 years, and how Long Feng and other Earth Kingdom people knew about Sky Bisons, with an Earth Kingdom commoner saying Appa was probably being sold for bison steaks(a market that apparently still existed 100 years after Bisons were driven extinct).
I'd want to see how Air Nomads who couldn't airbend would be accommodated in their culture - every kin group can still have a flying bison and make their nomadic travels, but how are non-benders accommodated? This could connect to the inventor's son in the Northern Air Temple, who showed how disabled people could have accomodations made for them in gliders. Maybe the Western Air Temple could be a little more OSHA compliant, so you wouldn't fall to your death if you trip near a ledge, too.
I feel like we didn't get to see enough of the Air Nomads in ATLA, after Gyatso and Aang, is the only other named Air Nomad Yangchen, who appears like twice throughout the original show? I'd love to see Air Nomads migrating and raising herds of bison(they are nomadic pastoralists, after all). Tibetan culture has a unique element where many young boys are expected to live at a monastery for a few years to learn discipline and mature, which would be interesting to represent in the Air Nomads' spirituality and temples that are already present in the show. Would there be any Air Nomad settlements or homesteads outside the Air Temples? Would there be many nomadic herds of bison herders in the mountains and islands the temples are situated in?
Lastly, Air Nomads surviving the genocide would heighten ATLA's important message about reparations and healing from genocide and violence: after the Fire Nation is de-programmed and reparations are made to restore and help the Air Nomads and Water Tribes heal, the sky bisons will return to roaming the world, and the Air Nomads would be able to rebuild their culture and the Water Tribes would be able to rebuild their tribes and regain autonomy of their territory when the Fire Nation returns their land to them, with the spiritual scars left on the world after the Fire Nation's war eventually healing, with the portals in the Water Tribe being restored again and the Ocean and Moon spirits being able to return to the Southern Water Tribe's spirit oasis again after years of being severed from them.

@dawnxtoxdusk said “No offence meant, but I do not trust you to carve the turkey” - kouyou
Festive Prompts
A fake little pout formed on Dazai's lips when the other spoke such words. "I'm hurt, Kou. I have ya know I am wonderful with knives~" A Port Mafia Christmas, but anyone would be slightly hesitant in letting the executive carve the turkey or anything that required a knife. Afraid that he might turn it into some type of massacre , be it the turkey or for actual blood to be split. "I thought ya of all people would trust me." He was pretending so much to be hurt, but it wasn't like he needed to get the knife from the turkey if he truly wanted to do anything.
It was true the other always had a gun on him rather than a blade, but he could easily get a blade. Chuuya for example he could steal from from. He could easily get a scalpel from Mori or he could get from his personal collection of tortured tools. This was a smaller gathering of mostly the executives with a few honoured members besides the boss himself. "I'm harmless~" They had made sure he was not seated by Chuuya, but there were only so many spots that they could put the two and thus they were across from each other.
Though no one in the Port Mafia could be considered harmless in the slightest, especially when it came to executives. Dazai was also even less harmless when his darkness came out to play. "I mean I'm sure ya not the only one who doesn't trust me to do such~"

Mara Jade is one of the most popular characters in the original Star Wars timeline franchise despite not being canon (yet). While the Star Wars canon universe significantly differs from Legends, especially after Return of the Jedi, many characters and other elements from the old continuity have been brought into the current one (albeit with notable alterations). One of the best-known examples of this is Grand Admiral Thrawn, another popular Legends character who was brought into canon by Star Wars Rebels.
For several decades, the Expanded Universe was treated as the official Star Wars timeline by many fans. With countless comics, video games, novels, and other media seamlessly tied to the original six saga films, Star Wars viewers could enjoy the franchise in more than just movies. When Disney acquired Lucasfilm and announced a new slate of films, they gave themselves a clean slate to tell new stories and rebranded the Expanded Universe as alternate continuity called "Legends." making only the original six saga films and Star Wars: The Clone Wars as part of their canon and began expanding the universe in this new canon through new books, comics, shows, and etc. Nevertheless, Disney has kept the Expanded Universe alive by continuing to sell Legends novels and video games, as well as using elements from Legends as inspiration for new canon stories.

One of the best-known characters from Legends is Mara Jade. Raised as Palpatine’s adopted daughter, Mara was an extremely powerful Force user who The Emperor used as his personal assassin. Known as an “Emperor’s Hand,” Mara served her adoptive father faithfully until his first death during the Battle of Endor. With the Empire descending into factions and warlordism and turning on her, Mara fled the Empire, becoming a smuggler. During Grand Admiral Thrawn’s Campaigns against the New Republic, she encountered Luke Skywalker, eventually severing her ties with her dark side past, joining the New Republic, and training as a Jedi. Years later, she and Luke Skywalker gradually fell in love and got married. Mara and Luke’s son, Ben Skywalker, also became a Jedi. Many years later, Mara Jade was killed by Jacen Solo (Han and Leia’s oldest child), who had become Darth Caedus, the apprentice of the Sith Lady Lumiya. While there's no way her story could play out anything like the Mara Jade from the Expanded universe, there's still quite a few elements of the character that could be brought into canon.
Mara Jade’s title of “Emperor’s Hand” was brought into canon by Star Wars Rebels, in reference to Gar Saxon, the Viceroy of Mandalore and Imperial loyalist. In Star Wars Legends, the Emperor’s Hand was a title shared by at least thirteen Imperials, all Force-sensitive and schooled in the dark side of the Force. The Legends Emperor’s Hands were each under the impression they were the only one, and Mara’s discovery of this contributed to her disillusionment with the Sith and her adoptive father.
In canon, Saxon was referred to as the Emperor’s Hand, but he isn’t a Force user. It appears the title has a different meaning in the new continuity, possibly referencing an elite member of Palpatine’s inner circle who enforces his influence. Nevertheless, the term is best associated with Mara Jade, and she would likely still use the title if she became part of the canon universe.
Mara Jade is not defined by her conflicts with Thrawn nor her romantic relationship with Luke Skywalker. Nevertheless, both are famous elements of her story in Legends and her first appearance was in Heir to the Empire, the first book in the Thrawn Trilogy. Grand Admiral Thrawn’s introduction to canon in season 3 of Rebels indicated Legends has a growing influence on canon, and fan-favorite characters and elements like Thrawn, Dark Troopers, Dash Rendar, and Jango Fett’s Mandalorian origins would be brought back.
Related: Star Wars: Everything From Legends Lucasfilm Made Canon Again
Thrawn’s return has been teased in season 2 of The Mandalorian, and he could potentially be the main antagonist of Ahsoka’s upcoming Disney+ series. The Mandalorian season 2 and the Legends Thrawn Trilogy both take place nearly a decade after Return of the Jedi. The parallels could go even further if Mara Jade is introduced to canon in the same timeframe.
Darth Bane’s Rule of Two dictates that there can only be two Dark Lords of the Sith at a time, but it's apparent Palpatine wasn’t a strict adherent to the rule, as it did its job of allowing the Sith to enact their revenge through the Great Jedi Purge and the establishment of the Galactic Empire. While Sidious and Vader were officially the only Dark Lords, they both trained students of their own. Along with Mara Jade and the other Emperor’s Hands, this included the mysterious Cronal, the former Jedi Jerec, and the Imperial spy Shira Brie (who would go on to succeed Vader and Palpatine both as the Dark Lady of the Sith: Lumiya).
Disney canon has its own spin on the idea in the form of the Imperial Inquisitors, Jedi hunters (and former Jedi themselves) who were personally trained by Darth Vader. In canon and Legends, these dark side disciples were all potential candidates to replace Vader, should they become stronger than him. This was the way of the Sith: The apprentice constantly plots to overthrow their master, who in turn, constantly seeks a replacement for their apprentice. Like in Legends, Mara Jade could be one of the most likely of Palpatine's students to replace Vader, should she grow strong enough.
Mara Jade used three lightsabers in Legends. The first was the lightsaber she used during her time as an Emperor’s Hand and lost during a duel with Lumiya shortly after the Emperor’s first death. As a Jedi, she alternated between her signature purple-bladed lightsaber (which she built as part of her Jedi training) and the blue-bladed lightsaber that once belonged to Anakin and Luke Skywalker (gifted to her by Luke at the end of The Last Command). Luke’s blue lightsaber has a long and fascinating history in both canon and Legends. While its Legends-era history is well-documented, the full story of how it went from Cloud City to Maz Kanata’s castle on Takodana is still unknown.
Related: Star Wars: Every Apprentice Darth Vader Had (In Canon & Legends)
So far, canon has only shown a small portion of the weapon’s journey between trilogies. In the fourth issue of Marvel’s current Star Wars comics, an ugnaught retrieves the lightsaber from a junk pile in Cloud City, but if Mara Jade is introduced to canon, it’s possible for her to have acquired the lightsaber at some point between the comic issue and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Mara Jade being involved in Maz Kanata’s eventual ownership of the weapon would finally make good on her promise of “a good story for another time.”
Considering her popularity and the many other elements of Legends being introduced into canon, it is very possible for Mara Jade to join Disney’s Canon. Due to the many differences between the two continuities, however, a true canon equivalent of Mara Jade would likely be quite different from her Legends counterpart, but some of the broad strokes of Mara’s characterization could be retained, including a version of her relationship with Luke.
The canon version of Luke is quite different from his Legends counterpart, but he might have made an exception to his rule of no-attachments in his generation of Jedi (as opposed to Legends, where his New Jedi Order simply omitted that rule) and married Mara. In this case, perhaps Mara is killed by Ben Solo, much like her Legends counterpart is killed by Jacen Solo. In this case, her death would make Luke’s loss of faith in his nephew more understandable. As with Grand Admiral Thrawn, it's too late for Mara Jade's Star Wars Legends story to play out in new canon, but that doesn't mean there's not a place for a version of the character to appear in Disney's Star Wars universe.

Ooh okay, so a couple things I want to say here. I've gotten kinda into historical costuming in the last year (by which I mainly mean I watched a bunch of costube videos, including ones by Karolina as well as Bernadette Banner, Morgan Donner, Abby Cox, etc.) so while I'm hardly an expert on this subject, I do know more than your average Joe at least :)
Anyway, one thing I've picked up is that corsets can be uncomfortable for a few reasons, like if they're badly made, and there's a process of, like, breaking them in that you're supposed to do. So if you're tight-lacing in a low-quality corset that hasn't been properly broken in... yeah that's probably going to be pretty uncomfortable. Not that this necessarily applies to the character in question; Celaena is super rich and quite fashionable, so her corsets would definitely have been of the highest quality, and if she were that uncomfortable, she could just, y'know, not lace it up so tightly. But it is interesting to talk about, and it does explain why some actresses have complained about corset-induced pain and discomfort--studios generally care more about how the corset *looks* than anything else, and the tight timeframes for shooting don't leave a lot of extra room for breaking in corsets.
As for the Throne of Glass series, I don't think it ever really commits to a time period beyond post-Dark Ages and pre-Industrial Revolution, which leaves a pretty wide timespan to work with, so idk if any criticisms about it not being the right historical era for corsets really hold much water. Besides, the focus of these books is mostly on the fighting and the magic and the characters' relationships and schemes, not the clothes, and they take place in a fantasy world that's completely made up. Idk about y'all but to me it seems a little silly to get upset over historically inaccurate undergarments in this story; like sure, this girl's corset might be unrealistic, but considering that she throws fireballs and lives in a castle made of glass, "realistic" was never exactly on the table, you know? I'm not trying to say that the author did any research on corsets for these books, just that I get why reading up on corsetry wasn't too high on her list of priorities, and I feel like this is less a case of "bad feminism" or whatever and more of an overlooked detail that coincided with some widely perpetuated misconceptions. After all, most people outside the historical costuming community probably wouldn't have even noticed this; I know approximately-fifteen-year-old me didn't back when I first started reading Throne of Glass.
Also, while looking through the comments, I noticed someone talking about "well, what was Celaena wearing under her tunics if not a corset?" and it's actually mentioned a couple times in the books that she wears some sort of cloth band around her chest. Interestingly, this is in fact a historical undergarment! While doing some research for the book I'm currently trying to write, I found that Ancient Greeks and Romans were sometimes known to wear something called a "strophium" that, as far as I can tell, matches the description of what Celaena wears in the books. I kinda doubt that the author did similar research and actually based her breastband on the strophium, but I just think it's cool to know about :)
Her corset—the stupid, cursed thing—pushed on her ribs so hard that the breath was sucked from her. This was why she mostly preferred tunics and pants. It was hard to breathe with the corset crushing her ribs. She had difficulty focusing on his face as she breathed in and out, in and out. She hated corsets. She hated the king. She hated glass castles.
Well, Sarah has no idea of how corsets work, look or do. They were just acient bras. As an historical nerd I also want to say this: SHE IS IN THE EQUIVALENT OF THE MIDDLE AGES, SHE SHOULDNT BE EVEN WEARING A CORSET. Maybe stays…BUT NEVER, NEVER, NEVER A CORSET.

( * skin deep // self para
Timeframe: Knight’s Growl Era flashback + Present Time Setting: Variety show + Dressing room Notes/Trigger Warnings: Self hate, Colorism, Depression Word Count: 764
Variety shows are easy for Trevor. They’re all about who can be the most outgoing, who can be the most memorable. Trevor’s confidant, for the most part. He can make people laugh with his healthy sense of humor, and he loves to crack jokes. But sometimes jokes can go a little bit too far, and people brush on topics that hit a little bit too close to home.
Knight had just started promotions for Growl, and it was probably Trevor’s favorite song to date. The music was great, the lyrics were right up his alley and the dancing was full of energy and rather fun to do. Knight had been met with successful comeback after successful comeback, winning at music shows and even being nominated for big time award shows. It was all surreal for him, someone who had started out as an underground rapper. He was nothing but thankful towards his best friend back home for pushing him into taking the plunge and auditioning all those years ago.
He was all smiles and laughter until one of the hosts said something that made the other members of Knight become a little bit awkward. Now, Trevor wasn’t a novice when it came to Korean, but he was still trying to get the hang of it. It took a moment for things to process with him, so he was a little bit short to catching onto what was said. One word did register with him though, and it made him cringe.
Charcoal.
It was, unfortunately, a word that he quickly became well versed in during his time in South Korea. Hell, it was a word that he remembered hearing from relatives while growing up in California, he should have known it would’ve come sooner or later during his time in South Korea, but that didn’t mean it hurt any less.
They say it once, and it coaxed laughter from the other hosts and from the audience, so they say it again. And again. And then the other hosts started joining in, making comments about how dark he was, the contrast between his skin and the other members of his group. Things that he knew. Things that he had oftentimes thought about while laying in bed late at night.
He had to deal with it coming from his family, and now he had to deal with being humiliated on national TV. International, really, because he knew that fans would find this and translate it into other languages for Armors who couldn’t understand Korean. And that made him feel like shit.
What else could he do besides sit there and take it? That was just how things were. Korean humor often played on insecurities. Looks, skin color, talent. It was expected and accepted, but that didn’t make it right. And it didn’t make it easier for Trevor to deal with it, not when he hated himself so much for it. He had spent the first half of his life being told that he was too dark and that he would be so much more attractive if he got his nose and eyes and jaw done. And that was just from family members. It quickly led to him hating himself, and many times he had to talk himself out of just giving in and going to have the work done.
Would that make him more appealing to people? Would that make people like him more? Would that make him like himself? He wasn’t really sure, but it would be a thousand times better than sitting in a depressive funk, hating himself and avoiding looking in mirrors for an extended amount of time.
His smile was tight as he forced out a laugh, trying to ignore the prickling in his eyes. A hand rubbed against his back; one of his group members trying to comfort him. They knew how he felt. They knew that was a sensitive subject for him, but they couldn’t do anything else but silently offer him support and then comfort him later on back at their dorm. Like always.
Trevor blinked slightly, and he was staring at his reflection in the mirror of the dressing room he was currently sitting in. He watched as the makeup artist applied the product to his skin, before shaking his head and waving their hand away.
“That’s too dark,” he snapped, although he tried to keep the venom out of his tone. “Use that lighter one.” He nodded towards the foundation that was at least two shades lighter than him.
Lighter. Paler. Better. Much better than his own skin.

v; reborn, the wings of courage
Jack is a phoenix in this verse, but can appear as human while also materalizing his wings as human. He has existed for over 1000 years, born into the world as a symbol of protection, courage and strength. While Jack has lived for so long, he must do as all phoenixes do and die for the next 500 years, only to be reborn after that timeframe.
His appearance changes with each cycle, but he can remember his true appearance: scarlet red hair, ruby red eyes, and an affinity for wearing the color black despite the phoenix’s true colors.
In the current cycle, Jack’s appearance is now snow white hair reaching the shoulders, blue eyes, and he has the affinity for wearing the color silver, and all kinds of diamonds.
On cue he can summon divine fire, color changing either to red or white, and his eyes glow of the same color when he fights. His purpose in the world is to protect, and provide courage to those who need it. One can call on Jack if they need him, but for a price. He wants no money, no materialistic things but for that person to always keep their heart true, and he provides a pact for that. Should they break the pact, they will experience true misfortune.
v; vampiric resonance
Jack is a vampire in this verse, a Royal one at that, who has his own court and so on and so forth. Junko, Kasumi, Sora, Raimondo, Shinobu and Takumi all exist as his elite set of vampiric guards to protect him as well as keep his followers in check.
He rules in his own dimension, in which the atmosphere is always dark but never gloomy. It resembles a futuristic cyberpunk era. For the most part, everyone is loyal to him & Jack is never truly angered unless those that try to revolt against him surface, so there is no need for bloodshed and grimace.
However with being a vampire and having his own kingdom, Jack needs his fill and will often cross dimensions and reach Earth for a short period of time to satisfy said fill, which is always the blood of three humans. Nothing more, nothing less.

The darkness spread through him like a disease. In less than a month, it had taken overentirely. He never stood a chance, neither did his victims.
Unleashed at last.
Cries of fear and pain echoed throughout the streets. There was panic, death, complete chaos. The ones who survived squirmed on the ground, driven mad by Yami’s shadow magic.
In a desperate attempt to stop Yami, Yugi tried to seal him inside the Millennium Puzzle again. The two faced each other in the mind room. Sadly, Yugi was far too late, his pleas falling on deaf ears. The darkness was too strong now. Yami was too strong now. With a swift movement, he locked the small teen inside the Puzzle, never to be freed again. This was his body now, his life.
His influence spread across the land like a curtain of darkness. Chaos ensued as the people foolishly ran for their lives, then started to fight amongst themselves to survive when there was no place left to run.
…
From the chaos a new order would be born. The world started its new era, with Yami as their one and only king. Sitting on his throne, he no longer felt remorse, he felt satisfaction. The people would not dare to question his actions, as he knew better for them. They would embrace him, just as he had embraced the darkness.
But one question burned in the back of Yami’s mind. Just who had been responsible for his downfall his awakening?
In this barren, ruined world, there is still hope. Someday, the people will resist his cruel reign…
Or perhaps… he might be able to resist his own darkness again, with the right words at the right time…

Downfall AU 2: Second Chance
TRIGGER WARNING: suicide, abuse, bullying, violence
[Used tags: downfall AU]
The darkness in his heart wouldn’t last forever. With Yugi’s lifeless body in his arms, Yami slowly came to his senses again. He buried his beloved partner in a place completely untained by his darkness: a flowerfield of red roses near the lake. The pharaoh planted a sunflower seed on the grave mound. Regretting all that he had done, the pain of living was simply too much to bear. Deciding he did not belong in this world, Yami took his own life with a swift stab in the heart. He perished next to Yugi’s grave.
Yet, fate gave them a second chance…
He would be reborn in a world that had reset itself…
But was it out of pity? Or out of vengeance?
A gift? Or a punishment?
Yami lived his new life unloved and unwanted. Abandoned by his biological parents, abused by his foster parents, bullied by his classmates, harmed by strangers, bumped into, stared at, spat on, attacked. He was despised by the living and haunted by the dead, cursed by an unknown force. His crimson eyes were the mark of the curse.
Yami didn’t understand why everyone was treating him like this, no one wanted to explain it to him. The moment any human came close to him, they turned hostile until they were at a distance again. As if the anger never happened at all. Yet, despite the unfair treatment, he never stopped trying to be on his best behaviour. He kept trying to do good deeds for others, hoping it would ease people’s angry hearts.
Until, finally, a friendly face appeared to him…
But was it a familiar face? Or someone new?

Magic AU
[Used tags: magic AU, spirit AU]
DISCLAIMER: This story deviates from canon considerably, though the muses act fairly the same.
In this Alternate Universe, Yugi and Yami are capable of magic. Yugi and Yami are both able to cast Black and White Magic. However, Yami is better with Black Magic, while Yugi prefers White Magic. Yugi is the 9th/current reincarnation of the light spirit Hikari. With every reincarnation, the light spirit lost more of its memories. Despite the lost past, the light spirit held on to its basic values of kindness and forgiveness.
Yami is the dark spirit locked away in the Millennium Puzzle. After thousands of years, the spirit had reverted to a more primal state, barely clinging on to sanity. Soon after he was freed, he did not hesitate to cast magic on those who meant harm to him and his host Yugi. Over time, Yami’s mind slowly stabilizes.
Yugi and Yami sometimes have a phantom pain in their side. Yugi feels the pain on his left side, Yami on his right side.

Faerie AU
[Used tags: faerie AU, fairy AU, fairy!yami, fairy!yugi]
In a world hidden from human view, creatures from dreams, myths and legends live and thrive. Among them are faeries, mythological creatures of nature in this world.
Some humans believe in Faeries. As such, they attempt to lure Faerie to capture them. Some humans don’t care for Faeries at all. But others, do. Some are just interested in these tiny, playful creatures in general…and Faeries are quite curious creatures.
However, not all is as it seems, for either folk…
There are humans Faeries should avoid, and there are Faeries humans should stray from as well. A few humans will find out just how dangerous some Fae can be.
Secrets of their own kind will be revealed as these humans wander around and stumble into a world not of their own…
Yugi, the folklore investigator
A bored teenager fascinated by anything paranormal and folklore-related. He would even trespass in old, abandoned or even dangerously decrepit buildings and areas just to catch a glimpse of something supernatural. Now he has found a new subject, as well as information that may lead him to an actual sighting…
Yami, the Midnight Faerie
A type of fairy that only comes out at night. Yami is quite a mischievous creature, not hesitating to prank a hapless human being. However, he often does this to those with bad hearts. When meeting someone with a good heart, he might leave a gift.

Merfolk AU
[Used tags: merfolk AU]
Yugi Mutou, the lonely college student
Yugi recently moved to a seaside town with his parents and grandfather. Over the years his family moved around a lot, throughout the country, causing Yugi to be forced to say goodbye to his newly made friends. Though this time, he might finally be able to stay much longer. He suffers from a water allergy, causing his skin to burn at the slightest contact with water, followed by a strange rash. Despite this water allergy, he wants to become a marine biologist. When disaster strikes, forcing him to be in the water for a prolonged time, he finds out his condition isn’t a water allergy at all…
Yami/Atem (name may vary), merman prince of Heracleion
Atem is the prince and future ruler of the underwater kingdom of Heracleion. His mertail is brightly colored, like most merfolk in the kingdom. His purple eyes, however, are only found in the royal family. His bitter father prohibits him from leaving the palace, but it doesn’t stop the prince from sneaking out to collect human “treasures”. Especially anything silver or shiny catches his interest. While he hates the palace life, he doesn’t really have the desire to live with landfolk either.
Admittedly, sometimes it gets tempting to visit the surface…
Merfolk tidbits:
Merfolk tears have magic properties. When shed underwater, they are distinguishable from ocean water until they dissolve after a minute. In that tiny timeframe the underwater tear can be used to cast a spell. When the tears dry up on land, they become gemlike and can be stored for later use. Yugi’s tears would appear like amethysts have soothing and mildly restorative effects, though the effect is amplied the more tears are used. Atem/Yami’s tears are like rubies and depend on his mood. Anger causes aggressive spells, sadness and fear cause protective spells. Atem, ironically, has strong connections to fire. With a dry tear he will be able to cast a fire bolt, while underwater he might be able to boil the water around his target
Atem is the prince’s official name. Naturally this proves to be troublesome whenever he escapes the palace to explore the waters. He takes on a different name, Yami, to hide this royal background.
In this AU, Yami/Atem retains his love for silver and other shiny things. This also serves as an evolutionary trait. Being able to spot shiny fish flitting in the waters would make the hunt easier. When the royal family and citizens relied less on hunting, their love for shiny objects served an aesthetic role instead.
Atem only sings on special occassions, or when a strong emotion strikes him. His deep voice allows for lovely duets, though his shyness holds him back from singing with others.
Background Lore: The culture of Heracleion citizens
Mer inhabitants still call the sunken Egyptian city Thonis instead of Heracleion. Despite the communal nature of Heracleion citizens, singing is only done during special occasions such as birthdays, coming of age rites, weddings, funerals, war songs and love songs. Singing on random occasions is frowned upon, and the wrong song for a special occasion is one of the worst taboos. Over the course of time the royal family strongly valued culture over nature. Ironically this makes them not much different from their terrestrial sibling species, even though they avoid humans and their ships like the plague.
This preference had an effect on their biology. They lost dorsal fins on the human torso, their fingers were no longer webbed, and their build became smaller and stockier. Their fish tails displayed more vibrant colors instead of just greys and blues, with more unusual colors and patterns being seen as desirable.
Because the city is situated 10 meter below sealevel (30ft), the inhabitants of Heracleion are still more exposed to sunlight compared to deep dwelling variants of merfolk, which are more likely to dwell at an impressive ocean depth of about 3,688 meters (12,100 ft) on average or deeper. Their skin is still light as a result, but not pale. The shallow depth of Heracleion also results in a warmer temperature, allowing for less reliance on fatty fish and more on plant material and smaller animals like crabs and sardines. The inhabitants of Heracleion are still able to escape to deeper areas of the ocean to avoid detection by their human counterparts, but cannot survive past the average ocean depth.

Angels and Demons AU
[Used tags: angel au, demon au, demon!yami, angel!yugi]
In any versions where the muses aren’t mortal, Yami is a demon, Yugi is a(n) pervert angel. The setting can be in Paradise, Purgatory, general “Afterlife/Spiritual World” and/or mortal world. Heaven/Hell/Afterlife, at surface level, are layered over the mortal world.
Mission version
Demon Yami
Yami is a demon assigned to tempt mortals and rob them of their souls. But when he meets this particular person, he just can’t do it. Maybe it’s nice to spare one, have one to talk with…
Angel Yugi
Yugi is assigned to help lost spirits go to Paradise, while at the same time keep an eye out for demons. It’s a tiresome job, sometimes he wishes he could take a break…
Guardian version
Yami, the summoned demon
Yami is summoned by a mortal to do their bidding. The demon has to obey any order from the summoner. But was the summoner clever enough to avoid fulfilling their end of the bargain?
Yugi, the guardian angel
Yugi watches over a mortal. While he gets to talk to other angels, or even demons on his job, he never really managed to keep a friend. Maybe he could befriend the mortal? It was worth a try… right?

Millennium Code AU Chapter 1: Program version
As a child, Yugi Mutou looked up to his teenage brother Yami. He was always interested in what his big brother did. That happiness wouldn’t last, however. On a particular night, Yami took Yugi to soccer practice. On their way there, a car collided into theirs, killing Yami instantly and leaving Yugi badly injured. Months later, Yugi was physically well enough to go home. Though mentally he would never be the same again.
The child was given his brother’s computer. The fascination he had for his brother’s work never left, in fact it had intensified after the accident. He picked up programming and 3D model making, managing to create a blank puppet model which he named after his brother. But there was only so much he could do with the 3D model…
The young Yugi eventually became skilled enough to repair computers, as well. One day, while trying to repair his grandfather’s old computer (working with computers certainly ran in the family), he discovers a complex code that no one was able to decipher yet. He moved the data to his own computer and attempted to decipher it.
After many years, in the present day, Yugi has become a skilled engineer, coder and hacker, staying indoors often to work on computers. Yugi finally manages to put the code together, gaining access to a mysterious program. Slowly but surely, the program seems to think and act on his own, even appearing to feel emotion. His AI almost seemed human. The program latches on to the old 3D model Yugi made, then names itself yAmI in computer languages, though it is written as “Yami”.
Millennium Code AU Chapter 1: Robot version
In this version, Yugi manages to upload the solved Millennium Code to a robot he built. This basically skips the step of yAmI being a program first, providing a different beginning. Later on the story ends up similar to the program version.
Millennium Code AU Chapter 2: Monster World MMO
It soon becomes clear this code is part of a much bigger project: A vast virtual world. The Millennium code is the key to completing the world, creating sentient, virtual lifeforms. After an attempt to copy the Millennium code in order to complete the project, the copied data ends up bug-ridden, turning rogue. It spreads like a virus. Robots, machines, devices, nothing is safe from the copy. Like a hivemind the copy constructs a machine capable of connecting the real world with the virtual world. Thankfully, not all of the copied data turned rogue…

[Used tags: pokemon, pokemon AU]
Disclaimer: The majority of these Pokémon do not have 3D models available for MMD and therefore may not appear in RP pictures. A picture might not appear in the RP at all or is substituted with a drawing or anime screenshot.
In this Alternate Universe, Yugi and Yami/Atem are Pokémon trainers. Naturally they don’t start with a full team, but gain new allies over time. This AU can take place in Domino City or the Pokémon universe.
Yugi gets his Pokémon faster because of his kind, approachable nature. Though it takes longer for them to get stronger. The small teen prefers to travel and befriend people and Pokémon, rather than become a Champion. While he doesn’t care much about battling, he will do so if absolutely necessary: having his Pokémon fight criminals and other kinds of wrongdoers.
Yami/Atem (name depends on the version) is very competitive, never refusing a trainer battle. Because of this, his Pokémon are considerably stronger. Due to his focus on training, his team has fewer numbers for a longer time.
Brothers version: In some RPs, Yami will be Atem’s nickname. Yugi and Atem are twin brothers and have their own set of Pokémon. Atem has his own identity and memories. Since he is his own person, he has his own starter (Yamask). Yugi’s starter Pokémon in this version is Espurr. Both brothers also receive an Eevee, Yugi’s Eevee evolves into Espeon and Atem’s into Umbreon.
Spirit version: Like in canon, Yami Yugi is a spirit without memories. Since he can’t have his own Pokémon in this state, he shares the team with Yugi. In this version, Yugi’s starter is a Deino. The Eevee Yugi receives evolves into Sylveon.

In 1994 I was like any other footy-mad kid of the day.
Every time I got some pocket money, I’d run up to the shop to buy a packet of football stickers to add to my collection as I tried to complete that season’s Merlin’s Premier League sticker book. Those stickers were like crack cocaine for kids. The high you got when you opened a packet to reveal the shiney club badge you had been after for months wasn’t matched until later in life when you lost your virginity.
Anyway, Everton weren’t very good at the time. Manchester United had Ryan Giggs and we had Stuart Barlow. Still, I could console myself when looking through the honours lists for each club. I could see that only a couple of clubs had won more stuff than Everton had. I could see that in the year I was born, Everton were crowned the best team in the land, and again two years later, which was the last time they won the league. So I thought the good times would come around again. Then, just a year later, Dave Watson lifted the FA Cup and I actually witnessed Everton success for myself.
With our exit to Leicester City in the FA Cup this season, it will now be a guaranteed 22 years since the Toffees lifted some silverware. As a kid in 1994, Everton’s greatness still felt tangible. Today it has quite literally never been further away.
The last time the club suffered through a barren period as long as this it had started after winning the 1938-39 championship, when the Second World War broke out to disrupt any progress. That’s Everton all over, that.
It wasn’t until 1960, 21 years later, that the blues would be roused again and it was all down to one man. Sir John Moores - a mega-rich millionaire who had earned his fortune founding the Littlewoods Pools - took over the club and began bankrolling record-breaking British transfers in an aggressive bid to build a squad with some of the best players available. The ‘Mersey Millionaires’ were born.
Thanks to some memorabilia that has been handed down to me, we can see exactly how the mood had changed around Everton shortly after Moores’ takeover. The following quote is lifted from the Everton FC Football Handbook 1960-61, a tatty, yellowing booklet I have been lucky enough to find:
The Everton manager whose own playing career marked him as one of the greats of all time is a quiet, serious-minded man whose aim is to please the great number of fans who demand the best of their club. Attendances of 50,000 and more at all home fixtures towards the end of last season indicates what support the club can expect if they are even reasonably successful.
The Everton supporter has been brought up to recognise class football and anything less than that does not satisfy him, It is my belief that Everton are about to begin a new era, one in which the many changes made at the club during the past few seasons will have their real chance to show results for their considerable labours. The new pitch, too, should help the re-constituted team to perform better than they did on a most difficult surface last mid-winter.
Everton’s plan to make themselves a force not only in retain but on the Continent and elsewhere is no dream.
All the moves they have made recently have been aimed to that purpose and if progress has been slow it has certainly been sure.
In my view they are very much a club of the future, a club whose post-war record will soon be forgotten when they begin, as I think will, to make their mark in League and Cup within the next few months.
By Sports Editor, Liverpool Echo, 1960.
56 years later and Liverpool Echo journalists are making the same noises around Everton’s immediate future. The current Echo sports editor, Dave Prentice, has even published an article on the similarities between now and then proclaiming the rebirth of the Mersey Millionaires.
“Everton is a very good club with a very good crowd, but they expect success and if they don’t get success something should be done about it and something will be done about it.”
- John Moores, 1960.
“It is not just enough to say we are special. We don’t want to be a museum, we want to be competitive and we want to win.”
- Farhad Moshiri, 2017.
With Moshiri matching Moores for financial clout and ambition – he also seems to be going down a similar route for building a squad. The then Everton manager in 1960, Johnny Carey, shared the club’s vision and strategy for assembling a winning team in a piece titled “The Season’s Prospects” as part of the 1960 Football Handbook.
There are three ways in which to build a team. The first is to buy all the best available players, but this requires a great amount of money, and probably much more than any one club could afford.
The second is to embark on a youth policy, and depend entirely on producing the players needed for the first team. This method may take more time than a club can afford if it is to maintain its present League status meanwhile.
The third way is to have a combination of both. This is the method I favour. A sound Youth Policy is a must in present-day football for a senior club. From among the club’s young players should come the nucleus of the first team of to-morrow. Where the inevitable gaps occur, recourse to the transfer market must be made to complete the team.
It’s fair to say that then, as is now, the Everton squad faced a cull. Today we’re also doing it the third way with the likes of Barkley, Holgate, and Davies complemented by the recruitment of Steve Walsh and the cash of Moshiri.
Unfortunately for Carey, his prospects weren’t so good. Despite steering Everton to their most successful season since the war, John Moores decided to sack him - in the back of a taxi. And so when Moshiri called a taxi for Roberto Martinez last season you can trace that saying directly back to that incident.
Moores’ decision was justified as after just two years the new manager, Harry Catterick, had won the league. Ronald Koeman speaks of a two year timeframe needed to build the side he wants at Everton. All Evertonians should afford him that before passing serious judgements. After all, the financial landscape today with competing clubs is the major difference between now and then, even if it seems everything else is in place.
When Everton avoided relegation on the final day – twice – in the 90s, we truly escaped the jaws of disaster and may have ensured that league success would one day return to the club. In an alternative universe, we went down on one of those nerve-racking days and suffered the fate of Leeds or Nottingham Forest. With the poor management of the club at the very top it is actually a miracle that we didn’t go down. The board during that period would have fully deserved it. But we didn’t and now, like in 1960, Everton is emerging from the doldrums of a dark era, deprived of success and diminished in status because of it.
If I was a kid today there is no chance I would have had the same optimism I had back in ‘94 scanning through the club honours lists. Blackburn Rovers, Middlesbourough, Portsmouth, Birmingham City, Wigan Athletic, Swansea City, Tottenham Hotspur (twice), and Leicester City (three times!) have all won major trophies since Waggy lifted the Cup in Wembley on that day in ’95.
The only hope now is that Matthew McConaughey’s alcoholic cop from True Detective, Rust Cohle, is right. That “time is a flat circle” and history is repeating itself. The present gives us hope that in Moshiri we are resurrecting an era of our past and that a bright future lies ahead.
When Chelsea and Manchester City were bankrolled all the way to the Premier League summit, their billionaire benefactors succeeded in making them great. But if Moshiri’s millions return Everton to the top there will be one major difference...
We won’t just be great - we’ll be great again.
