my main takeaway from the Simon Snow series

You Are Not Broken.

Simon grew up in care with no one that really cared about him. No one coddled him, no one fussed over him when he didn't feel well, and he felt like the most insignificant nobody in all of England.

And then this cool guy that has a sword and can do magic (whoa!) sweeps in and tells him that he's the most important and powerful somebody to ever exist and sweeps his entire world out from under him.

When we get his POVs, the mage spends the entire book telling us he has to fix Simon. That Simon is broken because he can't harness his power (which I did a tiny essay on here if you're interested). That Simon is so broken and shattered that he is unfixable.

From a boy with nothing to "Let the greatest power of powers reign, and may it save us all" and then back to a boy with nothing. His magic was what connected him to that beautiful world of worthiness and just as quickly as he was whisked into it, he was cast out. After being told by his mentor that he was unfixably broken.

That's... devastating.

and even more devastatingly, he believed it.

He believed it so much that started self-sabotaging every other good thing in his life because one horrible manipulative person told him he was broken.

and he believed it for over a year.

Which is why Simon and Baz meeting Lady Salisbury was so important.

She had a son who barely had any magic. And even though he didn't have magic, he didn't have that crucial connection to his mother's world that was coveted above everything else, she loved him anyway. She loves him so so much. and then, her son with some magic became her son with no magic at all. And she still cried with joy over his return when he came back to her.

Because love doesn't care about a silly thing like magic. Love is the greater magic, and it always is, and always will be.

He didn't have any magic to give, because he gave it all away. But he had love. He has more love in him than any other character in that series, except for maybe Ruth. He loves his school. He loves his friends. He loves his world of mages, even if it hurts too much to be a big part of it. He loves his mentor, and the silly goats that everyone overlooked, and even his evil, scorned roommate. Maybe the scorned roommate most of all. Simon never had a shortage of love to give.

And meeting Ruth and his real family was finally able to prove to him that the love he held close and carried around his whole life was finally enough. Better yet, it had always been enough, even though he was the last to see it.

Your love is enough. The love and goodness you put out into this world is enough. And you are worthy of love in return. Always. No exceptions. You are not broken. You are human, and humans are immovable and unshatterable. Your love is your magic, and you are worthy.

This post is for you. Never let them tell you you're not magic.

yet another post about sex and attraction (and how it manifests in Simon)

(this time with ~quotes~)

I wrote a lot of posts about how attraction and sex is portrayed with Simon in these books (it's an issue, not being able to shut up)... I saved some screenshots here when I was cleaning up my gallery a couple of months ago because, well. They support a lot of things I have been saying.

When Simon calls himself a Baz-sexual, he's not just being goofy! In the context of thinking about having sex, he says "Baz is the only person I've EVER wanted" (let me emphasize the already emphasized ever again, in case it's not clear). Simon is not comfortable thinking about sex (iirc even in his memory, it's memory-Baz who says "sex") (as a side-note, dunno why people see Baz as being shy or scandalized about this shit like... the guy will just simply say the word sex. His issues with pursuing his desires are a different thing.) Simon is not going to elaborate in a super explicit way like "I have never thought 'I want to have sex with this person' about anybody until I figured I wanted to have sex with Baz" He's not comfortable processing his relationship with Agatha either, so it's notable that he would say this in hindsight, because this is already answering a lot while avoiding the things he's the most uncomfortable with (he didn't truly want sex with her – he's just beginning to discover where he even stands on sex right in front of us)

This is Simon expressing himself in the way he's able, in the way he's the most comfortable: by focusing on Baz. And it's not a thing where he has felt attraction before and Baz is different because it's just more intense when you're in love (which is obviously a valid and real experience, it's just not what's going on with good ol' Simon). He's saying "Baz is the only person I've ever wanted"... And that emphasis on ever? very intentional. One could say it's correcting any previous statement in CO where a character or two might be expressing the belief that Simon wants Agatha, the person (as opposed to things attached to her) (Baz we're gonna get you to work through your shit one of these days my beloved) (Simon himself, but he's mistakingly saying "I've always wanted to date her" when the example he goes by to support this point conveys "I want to be like her" among a list of other things.... "I've always wanted Agatha" -> "Baz is the only person I've ever wanted"... see what he's doing? and note how one is thought in the context of Simon projecting things like strength and acceptance into her beauty and the other in the context of having sex)

"Simon doesn't know what attraction feels like, he begins to figure it out right in front of us when he figures he wants Baz," I say. "He has simply not experienced attraction until Baz," I say (and so did the author after CO came out, when the sequels weren't even a thought yet, and she said it again after awtwb came out. I don't need 'word of god' to support what I say because there's a lot to pick up from the books, such as the screenshots you see here, but it's nice to have the extra confirmation. I'm not made of stone, I know I'm not immune to biases and the like, but I'm not just seeing shit here!)"

Also: sex for the sake of sex doesn't cut it for Simon. This is someone who's not only discovering the point of sex... he's discovering the point of being horny (which also sounds like someone who has not experienced pleasure outside of food, which is the one thing Simon associates with that). I mean, he sounds like someone who's just discovering they're even capable of being horny for real (even though he was being horny when he picked up fights with Baz years ago... that was unconscious... he has been horny for Baz for years, but the awareness wasn't there, and he mistakes his feelings for something else like missing Baz=being lonely or bored, horny for Baz=anger or frustration etc). Passion, attraction, horniness, you name it – he's figuring this shit out on the page right in front of us. He's figuring it out now because he hasn't felt it before. This isn't new for Baz, who has masturbated to thoughts of Simon ("I can have this" is what's new for him) but it's completely new for Simon. Being aware of such feelings and trying to work through them is new. And he's wondering "What do I do with this?"...

Simon, horny to the point he's dry-humping Baz in a public space: I don't understand what's happening here. All this also ties into how Simon isn't used to making decisions for himself by himself – he has always had a map (other people telling him what to do/what they expect of him) and he's not used to process his feelings. Processing such intense feelings is already a lot, but then... what's next? What are you supposed to do with feelings so big you feel like you're about to explode? (going off).

This is part of why it's so difficult for Simon. "He's so worked up his magic is leaking"... He can't get worked up without his magic leaking... and you expect me to believe this is someone who could enjoy sex in any way shape or form with the girl who can't tolerate his magic? Let's be serious.

If anything, he would not be able to have sex with someone he's not magically compatible with while actually feeling shit. His magic would stop it before it really got anywhere (so if you're going anywhere, he's not feeling it). Just like Baz says, he goes from 0 to 100: from struggling to have any feelings to feeling so much he could explode. It's part of why it's so difficult with Baz, and why being with Baz pushes him to start figuring things out. He's feeling now.

(This also shows Baz's gentle heart from very early on. Introduced as an essential part of his character, one might say!! Almost like he has always been soft at heart and didn't feel allowed to show it! Like perhaps his environment and being pressured into and confined to a role and expectations that went against his nature made him sad and bitter and act up!)

I think the most important thing here is how special this moment is with Baz – it's so good because he feels like he's building something with Baz there. They're connecting... They also match with "I want the other person so much, but am I allowed to act on these desires? Do I deserve it?" they both feel this way. And allowing themselves to have what they want (the other) is an experience comparable to magic itself.

After appreciating the importance of this moment... we can start looking at the little details. This scene was the starting point of me taking Simon's magic into consideration – that perhaps this is where Simon first experiences a relief that's not destructive. Before that, the only form of release he knew was just going off with his magic. Is this magic? is about how magical that moment is, yes. But also... Is this magic? he thinks while having an orgasm. It could be said that an orgasm is like going off – Simon only knew about going off by releasing his magic, and magic made it so he wouldn't have been able to go off in any other way without that being an actual danger (perhaps like how discovering his true desires would have been a danger to the structure he used to live with then, the traditional expectations and the role he was fulfilling)

Also, how would he even get worked up when he doesn't know what he wants? when he doesn't know what type of touch he even tolerates? When he doesn't think? (and for the record: you can get body parts to react with any touch without actually feeling it, I have posted about that too, look up arousal non-concordance etc). He's just starting to figure out these things when he's with Baz. Before being together, he got worked up with Baz all the time, but he didn't know what it was. He didn't know what any of it was (again, like when he missed Baz terribly but he just thought he was hungry or lonely or bored). Now that he knows he wants him, everything is so... much. It overwhelms him. I mean, consider this... This is very complicated, and it's also the first time Simon is left alone to figure it out by himself, free of expectations – the very thing that caged him also provided instructions of what to do, so it was easier to just act without thinking. There's no map here, no instruction... until Baz starts to guide him.

This is another thing that gets missed a lot: Simon is inexperienced. Doesn't matter that he has had sex before – he's showing you his inexperience with his questions, in the way he knows he wants to touch Baz but has no idea what to actually do. In a way, Baz has experience, even if it's not a lot, because he knows himself. He has experience feeling his desire and doing something about it, even if it's just by himself (masturbation as self-discovery: yet another reason Simon would not have been able to do it). It's why Baz guides, and why Simon finally feels like they have it figured out once Baz "starts driving." Baz telling him what he wants (which is also a good grounding technique to avoid dissociation) or figuring out what he wants provides Simon with the mission, the map, the guidance he craves. Only this time, it goes hand in hand with figuring out his own wants.

(I'm probably forgetting something I wanted to say here. Anyway, let me highlight how obsessed Simon is with Baz... Simon "I know his face better than my own" Snow, who has every microexpression Baz makes carefully cataloged in his head, doesn't know what Baz's face looks like when he feels pleasure, and he needs to change that expeditiously. He said the lights must be ON during sex with Baz.) (I probably going to post this little parenthesis again. I know very few people read these long ass posts until the end and I need the people to think about this)

(I’m about to get mushy, so beware) Picking a quote from this series for my graduation cap was a no-brainer for me. This series has had an insane impact on my life, to the point where I genuinely don’t know where I’d be without it. From first picking Carry On up the week I turned 15, to having to physically restrain myself from reading WS in one sitting because it was my first hard week of college as a freshman, to reading AWTWB in one sitting the day it released despite being on a family vacation. From starting a sideblog, to making art and fics about it with my sister, and to looking through art or fics when I was having a panic attack to help me calm down. To the amazing community I’ve found online with the most talented and kind people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. My life has been fundamentally changed for the better because I decided to pick up Carry On in January 2016, and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Howdy, howdy, howdy. I hope y’all are enjoying your summer so far. We’re hitting the really good weather right now and it’s been lovely.

I am creeping up to the end of my runway with future chapters of Back and Back and Back. 😬 I’ve got one more finished (chapter 4) that needs some light editing. After that, I’m slogging through writing chapter 5 and waffling between two different drafts, trying to decide which I want to work with. Or I’ll just mash them together. Undecided.

For now, have some Simon POV from the upcoming chapter 4, which will be out next week:

It’s three weeks into the school year before the Mage sends a bird for me. I was starting to think it’d be more radio silence this year, so it surprises me when the robin flits into the dining hall to deliver his message. It lands next to my toast and shits on my napkin, but at least it leaves quickly once I get the note untied from its leg. 

“What did I tell you?” Penny says over her tea. “I told you the Mage would want to hear from you.” 

“How do you know it’s the Mage?”

“Because he’s the only person who sends birds in the middle of meal times.” She wrinkles her nose at the mess it left. “It’s unsanitary.” 

She waves her ring over the napkin and casts Clean as a whistle. 

In other news, I thought I’d shared this snippet previously and went searching ‘back and back and back’ on my page to check and came across this beautiful art by Aston and realized I used an AWTWB quote for my fic title. I was trying to evoke the time travel aspect, with Simon visiting Baz in the past again and again but apparently, it’s a canon quote that had weaseled into my head. What’s more, is I thought ‘I kiss him back and back and back’ was a canon quote when I came up with the title, but when I searched it, I couldn’t find it. Turns out, it’s ‘I kiss him back. And back. And back.’ So it didn’t show up on my ebook search cuz of the periods. I prolly had Aston’s version in my head and instead I just thought I was going insane. Let’s pretend it was all on purpose because I’m really clever and gave it two meanings and not that I’m an idiot with a brain like Swiss cheese.

Convincing proof that Baz is "just some guy" aka not unusually shockingly handsome as Simon has led us to believe

This post contains quotes and plot summary from Rainbow's short story "In Waiting" from Scattered Showers, which I think is way more delightful to read if you go into it cold, so I'm putting it below a cut :)

But anyway, recently I flipped Scattered Showers open at random and came across this line:

As a writer, I fucking love this story. It follows the interactions of a couple of Rainbow's character sketches before she's written them into their stories, and gives some cute info about her process too ("You've got a name!... That's an extremely good sign... That's the last thing she gets to."). I love how Rainbow herself is a character in the story, too, in the sense that the characters talk about her as their creator. On Instagram she described this as "this is my favorite story. It's weird." I LOVE the weirdness, the cleverness of it. It makes me think about my own characters, what kind of interactions they might be having.

"When I see the aggressively handsome ones coming, I know they aren't meant for anything interesting. They can barely hold a conversation." (Page 246)

So from this we can surmise that Baz isn't "aggressively handsome", and now that I think of it, AWTWB gives us some additional ammunition to argue this point:

[Agatha] Is she kidding? "Basilton Grimm-Pitch? The headmistress's son?"...

"Pale? Crooked nose?"

"I mean, yes. But I've never heard him described that way."

But it's also funny, because I went back to chapter 24 of Carry On, where Agatha is waiting for Baz on the ramparts, and she never explicitly tells us that Baz is hot! Did Agatha herself ever find Baz attractive, or if she was just convinced that he was because Simon, her boyfriend, went on and on about him all the time?

COTTA poll

okay yeah i'm indecisive and can't figure out what to write for COTTA, so here are my ideas. i can write up to two, so the two with the most votes will win unless one has a massive majority.

the ideas:

Brobelove pirates- 1720. Agatha is on board a ship set for England to marry a man she has never met when her ship is attacked by pirates. Their captain, Niamh, takes her as a hostage, but it soon becomes apparent that neither her broke parents or estranged fiancé will pay her ransom. However, Agatha finds she quite enjoys the pirate life, as well as Niamh, and decides to stay. antics ensue.

Snowbaz miner's strike- 1984. Baz, a closeted gay man, slips out of his family home for a day to go to pride, and there he gets pulled into a group of activists who want to raise money to support the miner's strikes taking place across the country. Among them is Simon, an orphan from Wales attempting to make a new life for himself. When the group pick a Welsh village to support not far from his own, he keeps quiet, and two grow close as they continue their activism. But can they make it through when Baz's family start to grow suspicious, Simon's past starts to make itself known, and the AIDs crisis and political suppression continues to ratchet up around them? based on the movie Pride and the group LGSM. i will admit this one is probably my favourite, i come from a mining family/community myself.

snowbaz reincarnation- different incarnations of Simon and Baz have a series of close encounters throughout history, but always lose each other too fast. Based on the AWTWB quote: "I know he's the love of my life. Of all my lives. The Mage believed in reincarnation. Of a thousand lives stacked on top of each other." will end with the Simon and Baz we know.

Carry On Countdown 2022 Day 3: Expectations

Baz is defying his father's expectations by giving away the ring, and Fiona is defying everyone's expectations by marrying Nico.

I'm going through a break up and this is the only place I feel like I can really talk about it with out worry that my in person friends or family will read this. I don't want them to know how sad i am.

We've been together 10 years, and at first it was beutiful. I was always there to support him in all his projects, and he always had a project.

Now he started a company and wanted to grow on his own, so I was pushed away from his project. That's when I learned that our relationship was a one way street. I played the role of therapist and shoulder and the rock, and all he did was emotionally dump on me and then leave. He'd party elsewhere. He be ok elsewhere. He'd cultivate other friendships and relationships, put his energy into things he could do nothing about, leave me with the most broken parts of him. To quote Taylor Swift - "is it really your anxiety that stops you from giving me everything, or do you just not want to?"

I feel stupid for sticking around this long, and for believing every time he would wave the carrot around. "I'll propose when X happens. I'll settle down next year" year after year. There was no carrot.

It's the alternate, more realistic ending for Wayward Son was this. Simon not getting his shit together, not trying, and Baz having to leave to save himself. The book broke me when I first read it, and AWTWB gave me hope. Like hey, ppl are messy, you just gota give it time and communicate. Both parties just have to want it, and try. I wished for that ending, but it just wasn't for us. It hurts because I was so Sure he was my person, you know?

Because I’m… me, I went to my Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism and looked up Antonio Gramsci. The last time I cracked this book open was in summer last year, when I was drying flowers from my garden. (That feels like the correct use for a tome like this.)

With thanks to the editors Leitch et al., here are some details about Gramsci that have gotten their hooks in me: 

He was twelve when his father was convicted of fraud (possibly for political reasons)

After that, he had to drop out of school and work sixty hours/week to support his family 

His growth was stunted by TB (he was four feet, ten inches tall) and he referred to himself as a “hunchback” 

He wrote that letter, quoting Romain Rolland’s idea “pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will,” while he was in prison

He was released from prison for poor health and he died two weeks later

He was 46 when he died. 

For me, it is very easy to get lost in swamps of theoretical writing, especially about (LOL) intellectualism and politics and Marxism. But I think of this human, in pain, in prison, with his failing body, pushing these words onto a page and hoping they would reach his friend, talking fiercely about acting with optimism... and it does something to me.

This also reminds me of a quote by Philip Pullman, from The Golden Compass, spoken by the witch Serfina Pekkala:

“None of us has free will. But we must act as if we do, or die of despair.” 

Which is kind of…….. terrifying, LOL. Thanks, Phillip Pullman! But for me, it is connected to Gramsci’s idea, pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will. You know what the world is like, how awful it can be - but you live anyway, you love anyway, you try to do good anyway. You continue to care and be present in the world (always a struggle). 

That in turn, reminds me of this quote by Lorraine Hansberry:  

“I care. I care about it all. It takes too much energy NOT to care… the WHY of why we are here is an intrigue for the adolescents; the HOW is what must command the living. Which is why I have lately become an insurgent again.” 

P.S. H-how did we get from AWTWB? I don’t care, I like it!!!

I’m not crazy… Penny really is a year younger than the rest of them (thought I was mixing this up with Hermione)
