We decided to make the outdoor seating cylinders as it is easy to manufacture and can fit more people on it. We decided to arrange the seating in a shape of the fish which can only be seen from the gantry. We decided to have various heights for each seat as it looks visually interesting. We decided to add the story to the stepping stones. We just need to come up with an appropriate system which people can follow.

Simulation of signs in the real environment
We tried out a few different ways to place the signs. They do not work well, we need to think about another way that legible and easy for people to see.

SiloSense - The Beginning
So.. after scouting around Silo park, both myself and Yuexi have decided to do more research on two main attractions there.
1. The ugly looking but great giant metal structure
2. Heritage Landing
Both of these caught our eyes due to the fact that both of these are main attractions and one is super ugly and seems hopeless but not true and the other one is completely opposite.
We will do more research and will update later on.

Week 11:
Supplied are links to view the final mock ups for our wayfinding system in St. Kevins Arcade. Meredith has designed the outdoor features, Jess developed the signs along the walls of the arcade, whilst I have designed the main sign that is found at the entrance of the arcade and in the middle of the walkway.

These are our laser engraves stepping stones which are made out of MDF. I sanded it down to get rid of the burn marks but some of the dust get stuck in the small crevices of the letters. It turned out really well and its what Chloe and I envisioned for the stepping stones in our outdoor furniture instillation.

Improvement
We did laser cut of the inside signages to see what they actually look like. We made the outside sign the same colour and material as the inside signs. This can make a good connection between them, both of the signs represent the library. The outside sign represents the meaning of the library. The inside signs represents the construction of the library and the Maori culture in the library.

Reflective Statement
Over the course of the semester I believe I have gained some important knowledge about how information can be displayed in an environment. This was the first time I had done any design like this, and I feel like it has been a good change from the usual design work I am doing in my other studios and classes. I have also been exposed to producing work in ways that I haven’t tried before (for example, using a laser cutter for both cutting and engraving). This has been a good change from the print work that I am used to producing. I can also say that this minor has offered me a fresh approach towards how things are designed in the world around us.
In terms of the project, my group focussed on producing a wayfinding system for the St. Kevins Arcade, which is found on Karangahape Road. It took my group some time to get on our feet and start experimenting with ideas, because I think we were initially confused about what we had to do (as the brief specifies that there is no physical hand in, and personally I have been used to finishing a final piece of work for marking). Our aim for the assignment was to create a wayfinding system for St. Kevin’s Arcade that compliments the creative atmosphere, but does not smother the original and unique identities of the stores that are already there.
Despite taking a few weeks to get into the swing of things, we started to work well together as a group, and began exploring ideas and actually moving towards what we could consider a ‘final concept’. I started feeling better with this assignment once I had come up with a concept for some signage (and also what kind of system would be in the arcade as a whole). Once the group started using the 3D Labs to look at materials and ways information can be displayed on these materials (laser cut, engraving etc.), I felt that we were making some decent progress. We realised when we made mistakes (one major mistake being letter counter forms falling out of laser cut materials).
The experimentation involved with this paper enabled us to make mistakes, and see when we needed to fix these mistakes, which is something that has had a significant impact on me and how I design. Sometimes as a designer I am so focussed on getting something right so that no mistakes are made. I have now realised that the design process needs to have mistakes. This means that we can come up with solutions and in the end have a better result. Something designed with no mistakes may not turn out as good, or as effective as something that has had a process of problems and solutions. After all, it is our mistakes that we learn from.
Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed this paper. Bammie’s appearances also helped us to have a break and take our minds off the work when we were unsure what we were doing! But the whole group eventually got back on track and we ended up producing some stuff that is pretty cool. I’m really happy with how everything turned out, and look forward to seeing what we do next year.

Week 10
We narrowed down our choices and decided to do a double blade sign mounted on the ground that is clear acrylic with slots. Each shop will have a different style of sign so place into the slot in the order of their shops.
We decided to have the clear acrylic sign because it allows for the arcades colours and light to show through. We felt that a opaque acrylic, especially if it was going to be a tall blade sign, would be too abrupt and in the way. The fact that the shop names are removable make is convenient as the arcade is undergoing a renovation of a sort and most of the shops are getting swapped out for restaurants. Each shop name will be printed on a either MDF wood or black acrylic and in a different method (reverse engraving, laser cut). This represents the variety of shops and diversity in the arcade. We did not want to make it look too uniform because that does not reflect the personality of St. Kevin’s Arcade.
We decided it was also a good idea to create big, sculpture-like arrows to install in Myers Park and on K Road to up the exposure even more and encourage people to visit the arcade.
