Love, From Vicki Island
As he rounded the bend in the old tufa causeway that led to the harbor, Doctor Orfeo got a feeling that things would continue to not be as they seemed that day, and perhaps for a long time to come. Having defeated another obstacle in the launderers’ quarter on the bluff above the harbor, he was one ally richer and poorer in time and energy. This was the case for his more recent adventures.
Thoughts about Doctor Ione raced through his head - but he also thought about an ancient plague of infectious orange blood that spread like quicksilver through the Greek colonies in Campania during the pre-Roman era. He thought about Don Benedetto, too, even though the Doctor tried to put him out of his mind. There was so much more that needed to be done, beyond even solving the mysteries that besieged the city of Santa Ninfa.
Sometimes he imagined scenarios where the city was encouraged to evacuate to a nicer town along the coast, one where the only problems were ones of a municipal nature rather than a metaphysical one. For whatever reason, Santa Ninfa stood at the threshold of worlds and was always known for burning the candle at both ends.
On one side, the old volcano, and on the other, the sea. A long line of metaphysical doctors like Doctor Orfeo had visited the city in old times and kept a council of doctors, the Association of the Psychic Lancet, which held the reality warp that emanated from the very foundations of the city at bay. But as years passed, the Association’s purpose was forgotten, and their institutional knowledge waned until attrition and time finished it off for good. After the eldest member retired to a vineyard, all that was left was the most junior member, a woman who kept a shimmering cloud in her cupboard.
After selling off the old Council offices, a squat building of tan masonry with terra-cotta reliefs depicting miraculous works, and locking the front door for the last time, she left it to memory in the half darkness. She later held a little boy’s hand in hers as the two of them boarded a dark car and left the studio that was their home since the boy was born. The little boy looked up to the red-framed window with the stained glass floral rondele, and knew it was the last time he’d ever look on the street from that vantage. “That was some time ago,” thought Doctor Orfeo.
Doctor Orfeo gazed through the pitted archway of veined marble, past the old bronze gate, and saw a woman standing by the iron railing around the harbor overlook. For a moment, he thought she was Doctor Ione, but he knew better. She looked over her shoulder as he approached and stopped a distance to her left. After a time, they looked to one another and exchanged smiles. She wore a long indigo colored coat with amber embroidery, and her round glasses reflected the blueness of the sea.
“There’s nothing like this place,” he said.
“Not in the whole city. I’ve read that this used to be the site of a lagoon some two hundred years ago. A precious ship sank and they built this overlook on top of it, vowing that no finer vessel could ever dock here again,” she said.
“You’re well versed in Santa Ninfa’s history,” replied the Doctor. “I’m Doctor Orfeo, it’s a pleasure meeting you.”
The woman smiled, “Doctor Mikare, Empathic Botanist. Pleased to meet you. I’ve heard about your work, Doctor Orfeo. Our fields are very different, but I was wondering if our paths would ever cross. I study the flooded forest that emerges every so often on the horizon. It tends to dry up, so I need to keep it going sometimes. If you ever see a green boat, that’s me. Empathic plants grow in that depressed island; a geode of time and space. I water them with my assistant’s tears so they’re never forgotten. He’s off in the jungles looking for rare onions as we speak, so now I’m waiting for him to return so I can get back to work.”
“Those plants must have considerable spirit. I’ve only read about such things, never seen them up close. But if they could grow anywhere, it’s here, this is as good an axis mundi as one can find, the place where the sea meets the horizon and then some.
“Yes,” Doctor Mikare replied, with one hand still upon the railing, “after one of the oldest volcanoes went dormant, it tore a direct line to the metaphysical realm. If you were to walk down one side of the sinkhole, you would get the impression that it goes on for about 300 kilometers, but it’s really a lot smaller. I teach the plants down there half-forgotten languages, so that it creates a kind of seed bank for the future.”
Doctor Orfeo smiled at that thought. The metaphysical crab apple that was hiding in his coat pocket stirred with intensity at the idea of guzzling tears for breakfast. He patted his pocket softly and looked back out at the horizon beyond the railing. “I have an idea. This city is getting overrun right now with plant spirits. Do you think your empathic plants would have it in them to host some new neighbors on their island?”
“I don’t see why not,” said Doctor Mikare, and the imagined idea played out in her inner mind like a grand play.
As they hatched a plan, Doctor Orfeo quickly drew up some notes on the back of a colorful postcard with a blue and violet scrollwork border, emblazoned with the proclamation, “LOVE FROM VICKI ISLAND”.

Oh hey welcome to the world of donghua! I can definitely be of help here. 🥰
I have a whole list of recommendations here, which has also sort of become a donghua-tracking list (of things I personally find interesting), so there’s summaries, links on where to watch, and images!:
Obviously a good place to start is with movies, and in there, Dahufa is one of my favourites—and the director behind it also recently released The Storm. Similarly, 30,000 Miles from Chang’an was another very recent release that saw some hype even on the western internet, and the studio behind Chang’an has the New Gods and White Snake film series as well. Then of course we can’t forget about Nezha (Nezha zhi motong jiangshi, 2019) and Jiang Ziya…
Deep Sea and I Am What I Am are also Chinese animated films that made a bit of a splash but still get often overlooked.
youtube
CW for blood and gore for Dahufa though!
And I have to say if you like Legend of Luo Xiaohei and All Saints Street, you may be interested in the sister series of the latter, Fei Ren Zai and You Shou Yan! They’re very similar premises, except the former features Chinese gods in the modern day, while the latter features Chinese mythical creatures. You can tell they are sister series since they all have OPs sung by the Chinese Vocaloid (known as a VSinger), Luo Tianyi. ^^
youtube
youtube
Another popular, well-beloved yet still decently underrated-in-the-grand-scheme-of-things series is Scissor Seven, which is actually on Netflix.
But if you want to get more underground, I’d recommend White Cat Legend; God Troubles Me; You Yao; Wo Jia Dashixiong Naozi You Keng; Bai Yao Pu; A Will Eternal; Shaonian Ge Xing; The Young Brewmaster’s Adventure; Tales of Dark River; Blades of the Guardians; No Doubt in Us; Psychic Princess; Cinderella Chef; The Demon Hunter; Throne of Seal; The Land of Miracles; The Island of Siliang; Ling Cage; Fog Hill of Five Elements; any number of danmei donghua (Thousand Autumns, Those Years I Owned a Zoo, Jie Yao…); and so on!
youtube
Now if you want to get really underground, here’s some series I enjoyed that not many people seem to know of in the west!:
Salted Fish: super playful and comedic with a bit of heart to it. The newest season just came out on Bilbili! Also just as a piece of trivia: in modern Chinese slang, “salted fish” means someone who is lazing around, because 咸 (xián, salt) is a homonym of 闲 (xián, laze/leisure). And the main character of this series…is definitely rather lazy/leisurely. 😆
youtube
Cat’s Tea and its AU spin-off, Dog’s Tea: a very cute chibi series that features transmigration and animal/tea-based tribes!
youtube
Rescue Eternal Desert: I admittedly didn’t get to finish this one but I really dig its style; it’s got that dystopian, desert set-up where the main characters are doing their best to survive!
youtube
Aiyou de Mishi: a horror-esque donghua about an escape room… Available on Crunchyroll!
youtube
Watt’s Up, Girl: a cute, fluffy series about a guy whose refrigerator becomes a human girl (yes, really lol).
youtube
Ringing Fate: from the director of Link Click and Tian Guan Ci Fu, we have a more scifi-esque story about an underdog in a fighting arena!
youtube
And okay I hit the 10-video limit on Tumblr mobile—which I might edit later when I’m on desktop since desktop lets you put in way more content, but for now I’ll still leave a few other recs with links below:
Losing Money to Become a Tycoon: a man gets a mysterious System that leads to him trying to lose money to earn money, all thanks to a technical issue. This one’s currently “airing” on Bilibili and has received a pretty warm welcome!
God of Deception: an older donghua and not exactly a perfect one by any means, but I still find it charming. In this world, there are judges for those who do bad, and the protagonist is one such person (specifically for lying), which opens up a whole new world to him.
Face on Lie: a story about looks and obsession; a woman seeks plastic surgery after her boyfriend cheats on her, but her doctor turns her into the spitting image of his comatose wife.
The Dining Room of Link Lee: a feel-good story that addresses deeper issues all through the bonding power of food!
War God System! I’m Counting on You: a transmigration xianxia donghua in the most classical sense!
Legendary Twins: another adaptation of a very classic novel, where twins are separated at birth due to a tragedy. One is raised by a proper xianxia cultivation sect while the other is raised by “evil” yao. This is about what happens when these two long-lost brothers cross paths.
Fox Spirit Matchmaker: honestly a much harder one to recommend despite it being quite popular and also decently “old” at this point, but that’s also why I’m putting it here. This is based on a manhua of the same name and features a heavy, continuous plot about reincarnation and love. Essentially, the Tushan foxes and their magical tree are the go-to place for soul mates to pledge their feelings for one another, allowing you both to meet again in your next lives. What this means, for this series at least, is that yao and humans who often fall into more unexpected, forbidden, and/or even tragic romances with one another go to this tree to make this pledge. As such, the Tushan foxes have to help the lovers’ reincarnations remember one another, and this often means we start in the modern day and get flashbacks to explain any of the lovers’ heartfelt pasts. In this way, Fox Spirit Matchmaker is sort of like Bai Yao Pu, which I mentioned before…as both really tug on your heartstrings (although Fox Spirit Matchmaker is much more comedic). And speaking of heartstrings, the main characters are also a case of this kind of reincarnation and tragedy romance, despite being agents of Tushan that help other couples get back together. This series used to update pretty regularly and since it started early on in the donghua scene, the first few seasons have some rough animation, but there’s still some good stories in there, and the animation improves a lot after like season 3 or 4. There’s 9+ seasons now, although I think production has slowed down a lot recently due to some issues with the studio.
And if you want to go for really really truly underground, any of the shorts/indie series I listed would obviously count, such as False Memory or Alita’s Trial or Daddy Loong or Lostreak Chicken!
And just as a bonus: if you’re into media that leans toward a younger demographic, Id recommend Great Warrior Wall; Xi Yang Yang Yu Hui Tai Lang (but only really the seasons after the Mighty Little Defenders season); Jing-Ju Cats; Ori-Princess; and so on~ In fact, I have some childhood favourites in there I’d love to recommend, even though obviously it’s less sensible to do so due to the time since they released but also the lack of English subtitles.
Finally, there’s also upcoming donghua that I would say to look forward to, even though they’re not out yet. You’ll probably see a bunch of them in the list I provided that you may find interesting, but since China is much more lenient about production timelines than Japan, there’s never a clear set date for how long a donghua will take, so if there’s any series that catches your eye (such as Guwei Nanting; Liu Yao; Shuofeng: Po Zhenzi; Yashe; To Be Hero X; Jing Wei Qi Shang; Zi Jin Yu Miao Fang; etc), you’ll have to wait patiently. 🥲
can someone give me donghua recommendations plsplsplspkspksplsplspsl i need to watch more donghua. im not picky as long as its good my fav donghua so far are link click and beryl & sapphire which are just… the basic ones lol. i also like legend of xiao hei and all saints street. uhhh i DONT like kings avatar i think the writing is boring af sorry (watched like.. 8eps). i know i could just browse thru bilibili til i find something interesting but bilibili has TOO MUCH STUFF!!!! id much rather get smth recommended. pretty please😢
also what i failed to mention is mxtx works. i do like them & their adaptations but im not looking to (re)watch them. id rather watch something much more underground as long as its good. or hell doesnt even have to be underground just something good but not from the echochamber of the same 3 series that get mentioned (dont get me wrong i fucking love link click as much as i could rewatch it again and again but i think we all know thats literally the most popular donghua outside of like, tgcf or mdzs)

Neil Morris, speaking to Alan Lomax in 1959:
“Well, when I was just a small boy, Old Uncle Milt Oldfield…Billy Oldfield, the Congressman from Arkansas for so long, it is his father. He and my father are awfully close friends. And they were discussing music. They were music teachers both of them.
“And uh, and they said, dad did and Uncle Milt sanctioned what he said, that MUSIC HAD NO END. That you could learn all the other guy [or girl] learned, and after you got that done they would then, something else would crop up. That uh, that you, that was the reason why that uh, music advanced. That’s why that you would get a better music in one generation maybe that is, uh, IT WOULD FIT THE TIMES IN WHICH THEY LIVED.”
[Lomax: “What about music on the grapevine?”]
“Welllll, they said that MUSIC GREW LIKE THE GRAPEVINE THAT IS NEVER PRUNED. That each year it’d…it’d put on a little bit more. That was what they said, now, about it. Any further questions?”’

Yugioh S4 Ep 4: Pegasus and His Unlimited Moxie
So, I’m finally back after that long--time--when I was sick, then busy, etc etc. Long story, I peaced out from social media for the large part, and my method for finding solace mostly involved watching so much “big living in a tiny house.”
Those houses are so damn tiny.
And now I feel better, so lets get back to business.
Just FYI, this is a midweek post because this weekend I’ll be exploring a part of California I didn’t know existed before my friend was like “Napa’s booked, so we’re going South to do our wedding in the other wine country” and it’s like “the hell are you talking about other wine country?????”
So I might be driving to a large cardboard cutout of a winery, and me and 400 guests are going to just stand in front of it and pretend that it’s real for a couple days. This means that I will probably make only like maybe three updates this month and I’m just going to have to come to terms with that.
And in case you are wondering (you’re not) the bye bye bye mashup dance we’re doing for the wedding is going great. It’s really freakin great that the Seahawks decided to choose this week to steal our thunder, so now everyone at this wedding will think we’re just all really into Football. (I’m just telling you that because I feel a need to complain so thank you for listening.)
But anyway, it was a nice surprise amongst all this *stuff* I didn’t really want to do, that this particular episode of Yugioh is pretty great. Like...guys we get Pegasus, we get Kaiba having a meltdown, we get PEGASUS. Like I forgot how much I like Pegasus.
So first off, Yugi and friends decided to watch the news about the whole shpeal from last episode, probably because each and every one of them was certain they all shared the same collective fever dream.
Something to note about Yugioh is they use a lot of near future tech, and I don’t know how much of that sci-fi goes completely over the heads of kids nowadays since this has become so normal. But yo, people in 2002 were still using AOL.
A lot has changed in 10 years. Just let that sink in, babies in the back.
(read more under the cut)
Also, please turn your entire attention over to this
Man.
the weird orange cookie on this painting is what really gets to me. It looks like a handmade soap. Because in order to soothe my soul during this stressful month I also watched a lot of cold-process soap making videos.
*quickly looks up to see if there’s Yugioh Soap*
Yeah that doesn’t exist. Hey do you think that if I sent in a Yugioh soap design into Royalty Soaps she’d actually make it? I mean, she did Studio Ghibli. This is just Studio Ghibli but on fire and with terrible hair and actually very different.
(And yes, I did, just now, in fact, make a soap design that I’m absolutely mailing to Royalty Soaps. I’ll put it at the end. No idea what it should smell like, mostly because the last thing I want to do when watching Yugioh is think about how ANY of this smells.)
See, tangents like this are why I don’t have more time.
Anyway, Yugi recalls that he was supposed to *do a thing* but also recalls that he was given really no instructions at all.
When something absolutely wonderful happens.
Y’all I was like shouting at the screen “BE A TAPE BE A TAPE BE A TAPE” and lo and behold:
Dude. Pegasus is such freakin mastermind. Remember that this show started out with them streaming video on a computer, and what did he decide to do? He sent them a tape. Pegasus knows FULL WELL how much they want to see this tape but at the same time...don’t want to watch this tape, and what follows is everyone deciding if they should or should not open Pandora’s box. A Pandora’s box they opened once before and then murdered Grandpa entirely by accident.
I can’t believe they sat on this joke for four seasons. It’s such a freakin good joke.
So of course it’s the same kid who once decided it would be a great idea to put together a puzzle that came in a box that said “WARNING THIS GODAWFUL THING KILLS PEOPLE” who decided to just stick this in the VCR when everyone else was fighting and no one was looking.
And, this is not a joke, this is literally how Pegasus decided to open this tape by scolding him for not keeping in touch when Pegasus tried to kill them not once but multiple times back on murder island. Pegasus thinks this deserves him at least a Christmas card.
Something that’s also very Pegasus is that he um--doesn’t even bother wearing an eyepatch nowadays. He’s just got...one eye now...just an empty socket that he covers with bangs and is like “ya I dare you not look at it.”
And then on, this kid’s show, they basically go through the checklist of things that are “things a child abductor would ask you to do”
And that’s it. That’s the whole tape. It’s the end of the world and Pegasus wants to get one last good prank in before it all goes belly up.
And it worked really good on Joey. But unfortunately, did not seem to phase Yugi.
And then after this, the show gets very sidetracked by some side characters that are...they still exist.
First of all, how much did Weevil spend on a bug drone? Like...what’s this guy’s day job?
Second of all, Rex and Weevil live on some weird brain plane, where they’re pretty sure that the upper echelon of card people are all in love with eachother (which, I don’t blame them, I’ve seen tumblr, it does give that impression if you’ve never watched this show). What they don’t realize is how badly each of the upper echelon of card people want to murder the Hell out of eachother, wipe eachother’s brains, and blow eachother up on a 6000 ft tower on an abandoned island.
so I guess...Unfortunately...Rex and Weevil are...still with us. Their reasoning is kind of weird--they want super good cards--but like...what’s the point of having super good cards if you’re still Rex and Weevil? Rex is so bad at cards we didn’t even get to see him lose in S2.
Also, the biker gang is back, and I still don't know their font color because they’re in dim lighting in this scene so I’ll just use these temporary font colors for now.
So, having done his one last good Joke (and maybe the only good joke that Pegasus has ever made) Pegasus decided to sit and wait for someone to do a murder on him. I mean he’s not psychic anymore, but he’s figured he’s screwed enough people that this was how he was going to go out anyway.
Mai....Valentine....
So I guess she’s back for another season? It’s weird, she made one cameo and then that was it for this episode, but it was very clearly Mai Valentine. Bro brought up that they had to make her a villain again, because she’s literally their only girl villain and I was like “no that’s, not right they’ve got...” and then I kinda sat there for a couple of seconds and I realized “oh dude there’s only been one girl villain so far in all of Yugioh!” and he was like “YEP.”
Because both of us completely forgot about Rebecca until I wrote this in this post and he was double checking it just now. My apologies to the Rebecca stans.
And then Yugi decided to let us know something extremely disturbing about his curse. The showed played it off like this was a cute thing you would want to have happen. But no. No one would ever want this.
Ho boy! They share FEELINGS?
So like...
...bear with me here--when Yugi is scared, Pharaoh gets scared. When Yugi is tired, Pharaoh feels tired. When Yugi has a complete meltdown basically every single day, Pharaoh reaches for his Tums. So um...I have to ask the question...
So who’s dating Tea? Yes, I know the real answer is neither of them, but who is the one that keeps bringing forth this ship that this show is supposed to be shipping? Both of them??? I mean they have the same feelings, and before I was like, well, I’m sure Pharaoh just kinda turns around and watches brain TV when Yugi and Tea talk about...deadlifting, or whatever she’s into, but nah he’s like...he’s got the same feelings as Yugi.
Does that just...never bother them? Like...they never get jealous? Ever?
It’s so freakin weird.
This whole sequence was Yugi being like “You can’t keep a secret from me Pharaoh, I will instantly know since I can feel you lying to me” and it’s like hot damn that’s a big lore drop that they just hop and skip away from.
So the next day they go to the airport and just go unsupervised to a foreign country.
This makes complete sense on Gramps’ part, because he was exploring Egyptian caves most of his life, so in comparison, California is baby town and Yugi would be fine. Clearly Gramps doesn’t know enough about Oakland.
Then again, Grandpa spent a very long and mysterious time in the Middle East raiding so many tombs and stealing an entire artifact that contains the whole history of a lost age of Egypt and an actual Pharaoh’s soul so like...probably wouldn’t get you past TSA in 2002. He’d send off like every red flag warning in the airport.
Give me an Air Joey spinoff this instant, Yugioh, you cowards.
It’ll be just like Wings, except all the pilots are very bad at their job and haunted by multiple ghosts.
There’s a very long pissing segment where there was no piss, but Rex begging Weevil to let him piss in the airplane. It’s about as much as you can expect out of a Rex and Weevil segment. And like, basically at this point, Rex and Weevil are married, yet this ship is never, not once, ever surfaced in my feed of fanart I see out of y’all.
And I don't blame you.
Now, when we get to California, we find out that Croquet either went completely gray or was replaced with an identical twin and also...
GUYS IT’S MY HOMESLICE.
Which doesn’t really look like this, PS.
So bro has already told me that they’re going to San Fransisco next episode or so (OMG I’m so excited to talk about it), so this is absolutely supposed to be SFO in the show. (maaaybe Oakland Airport? But I super doubt it)
Most people outside of CA don’t know the vast scale of Bay Area and that the San Fransisco Airport is not very well named since it is...not close to San Fransisco at all.
So, I’m going to guess that the show thinks they landed directly in the heart of SF. With the way this vista looks, I think they basically just painted the view from north of Downtown. Which is especially fun because that is a pretty bougie community and the thought of having just a major airport smack in the middle of it makes my heart warm and fuzzy because they have voted out an affordable housing community SO many more times than is morally acceptable. Serves you right, here’s your international airport across the street.
But Bro has warned me ahead of time that this season makes absolutely no sense geography wise...and I’m pretty stoked for that.
And then, as if reading my mind, Tea removes Rex and Weevil from the show, yet again.
Incredible that they got through customs like that, but they did arrive on a private plane, and maybe customs are different for them? I...don’t think it would be, even for a private plane, everyone has to go through customs. But, it’s a kids show, so Rex and Weevil snuck into America in a luggage bag, just like how Fox News warned us about.
Then again, I imagine that the customs agent was like “yo there’s two human bodies stuffed in here!????” and was like “ohhhhh wait, it’s a Pegasus’ plane. That adds up. Ya.” and just let it through.
Time for a classic Kaiba meltdown sequence, where he puts on a show of being really competent but is in reality acting like a stack of screaming cats in a purple trench coat.
Mokuba just working overtime to keep this ship afloat because man.
And then this next part isn’t a joke I made up--Kaiba only took as long as it took to monologue for five seconds about his reputation before doing this:
It’s more than possible that the translators have no idea who Roland is, and unlike me, isn’t keeping tabs on Roland every second that green haired fourthKaiba is on screen.
So Pegasus decides to give Kaiba a call on his video phone--because again he only saves the Panasonic Camcorder for spooking Yugi.
Pegasus could have just *called* Yugi the entire time, lol.
Anyway, without the camcorder, Pegasus now has room to stretch out his legs and stick his feet directly in the screen like the end of the world wasn’t less than 2 days ago.
And the show isn’t telling us why or how this is happening after the whole Mai thing that happened. But it’s nice to know that even when Pegasus may be absolutely held up against his will, he still freakin slays.
Youknow, Pegasus does more in this one episode to remind me that “oh yeah, Pegasus was my favorite character this whole time” than anyone else and he did in like two calls, sitting in a chair behind his desk, just screwing with people to screw with them.
And what I enjoy about Pegasus is that, although he had his eyeball removed--he’s still a freakin asshole. He still super sucks. I had a lot of questions about “how much of Pegasus being the worst was the eyeball?” And apparently the answer was “VERY little, this guy is just the freakin worst. Didn’t need to be cursed at all.”
And so, Yugioh doesn’t really do transformation sequences--unless you count when Yugi sometimes goes “yugiohhhhhh” and then to everyone else looks virtually the same. Instead Yugioh does gear up sequences.
Where we find out that Seto promised Mokuba he wouldn’t play cards anymore until he was done building all those theme parks.
I guess it’s unfortunate for Mokuba that this whole Pegasus end of the world thing happened out of nowhere and also unfortunate for Mokuba that Kaiba can build card-themed theme parks Really Quickly. I think Mokuba was banking on it taking an entire lifetime to build a park but youknow, looking at how many sequels of Yugioh there are...eh, Mokuba should have instead dared Seto to give up dueling until he finished a single semester of public school. Then those cards would have stayed buried.
Hey um...did Kaiba add hip spikes on this purple coat since Season 2? I don’t remember him having those.
Good thing I write a blog and I can check. Time for some time travel to Season 2.
Ah, yes, the hip spikes were not there in Season 2. So, at some point in between then and now, Kaiba looked at this old ass coat hanging in his closet and was like “Not Enough Butt Spikes!” and just glued em on there.
But anyway, back to Season 4...
I’m pretty sure this is one of the doors from Evangelion.
And so, off they go, straight to their death, in the world’s most un-aerodynamic vehicle.
Really glad that Dragon Plane seems to have become a permanent character, as it would if you spent 10 million dollars building a dragon plane that can’t possibly fly using real world physics.
So, Yugi and Co are going to California, and Seto is going to Season One.
And I guess Bakura was like “Oi! Loves! Is every body ready for me to murder them?” and Gramps was like “sorry, they’re getting murdered by Pegasus today” and he was like “bloody hell, every time.”
Anyway, if you just got here, this is a link to read all these recaps from the beginning, in chrono order--it’s a lot of content, and I can’t believe I spent this much time doing this.
And because you’re curious, here’s the soap design that will get absolutely rejected by Royalty Soaps because they say they like to watch anime but they also pronounced “Ghibli” wrong like over 20 times on that one video so I have a strong feeling this is not their brand.

Reviews 322: Aporia
I discovered the music of Aporia and Mitchell James O’Sullivan by way of Dub Disco, a beloved label who released Dub Disco Presents Aporia + Remixes back in 2018. One side of the 12” highlighted tracks from Aporia’s debut release Almost Tropical alongside an exclusive new track featuring Fazerdaze, while the other saw Dub Disco head Aussteiger and associated artists such as LITS801, Cosmic Palms, and S&W applying their balearic remix skills to to O’Sullivan’s tropically-tinged psych pop fantasies. The whole thing was a revelation and in the time since, both Almost Tropical and Dub Disco Presents Aporia + Remixes have worked themselves deep into my heart and now comprise some of my favorite music ever. So as you can imagine, there was considerable anticipation for an Aporia follow-up, which finally came during fall of 2019 in the form of Hotel Aporia, released by Cosmic Compositions and Fantasy Fiction Records. The LP sees O’Sullivan expanding the band’s line-up to include Nick Petricevic and Alia Seror-O'Neill, while also featuring a host of guest musicians providing additional guitar, synth, and woodwind treatments. And conceptually speaking, Hotel Aporia seeks to transport the listener to the titular hotel…an imagined beachfront resort existing in a sort of Lynch-ian dreamspace, one used by the band as a means to “navigate their South Pacific identities” and that is seemingly only accessible via exotic amalgams of library psychedelia, 50’s pop, Hollywood noir, sci-fi surf rock, and Hawaiian tropicalia.
Aporia - Hotel Aporia (Fantasy Fiction & Cosmic Compositions, 2019) After an introduction of mysterious orchestrations, operatic hazes, and chirping birds and insects, “Psychic Driving” sees a psychedelic surf beat riding alone before being joined by swinging bass thumps, tambourine jangles, piano chord splashes, horror film Moog leads, and spaceage theremin choirs. As the noir atmospherics recede, multi-tracked narcotica whispers flow above a sparse groove...as if O’Sullivan is scatting forbidden secrets while glowing synth hazes hover just out reach, with his voice sometimes backed by wordless feminine magic. During mesmeric choruses, cinematic strings and ghostly synth leads flow beneath Seror-O’Neil’s fantasy hooks and at some point, the whole thing gives over to a delirium jam out…like a trippy 60s happening taking place in the Red Room from Twin Peaks, with strobe lights flashing and enigmatic masked figures executing the batusi and the swim amidst melting layers of orchestral exotica. “South Seas Beijing” follows with seagulls and crashing waves surrounding liquid chord slides that recall nothing so much as “Breathe in the Air”. A lazed beat snaps amidst maraca rattles and chime strands as a Roger Waters style bassline drops, giving the whole thing the distinct feel of Pink Floyd scoring a South Pacific sunrise. And after an outro of moonlit wave motions, echoing loon modulations, and galactic synth flourishes from Lawree Goodwin, we flash into “Moon Taxi” and another solar surf rhythm glide. Seaside guitars glimmer in the sunlight and basslines sing beneath equatorial electronics as a vocal duet emerges, with O’Sullivan’s and Seror-O’Neil’s voices blurring together into heavy-lidded splendor. Cooing wordless refrains alternate with a fantasy chant of “the moon is watching” as flower power breakbeats are guided by bouncing bass guitar warmth, with lines occasionally sliding through lyrical romanticisms. There are moments where the mix reduces to an ambient blur, with aquamarine guitar vapors flowing through underwater vibrato fx, and towards the end, we flow into instrumental psych pop perfection as yearning voices suffuse the background…like sirens singing out from a hidden island paradise.
Amongst my favorite cuts here is “Helium,” which lets dense layers of fantasy synthesis guide a futuristic 50s pop epic. Slow motion drum beats glide beneath birdsong, with snares splattering through dub echoes. The classical ice cream chord progression rushes over the mix via lush pad orchestrations, angel choirs, and sparkling chimes while subsonic body grooves are generated by buzzing waves of analog warmth. Eventually, everything recedes save basslines, beats, and O’Sullivan’s and Seror-O'Neill’s vocal lullabies, which surround the heart with narcotizing threads of Roadhouse style synth-pop that strongly recall Angelo Badalamenti's and David Lynch's collaborations with Julee Cruise, as well as Chromatics. Gemstone piano mirages swim through the mix and during feverish choruses, the soul rushes towards a cinematic paradise aglow in tropical warmth. As the track progresses, multi-tracked string machines and droning polysynths subsume the singing…though hushed vocal incantations are still heard deep in the ether. Galactic lasers wiggle and cosmic tracers squiggle while fuzz guitars (or synths?) climb towards a molten summer sky, and during a moment of psychosonic mystery, the mix devolves into tremolo chordscapes and filtering trap kit rhythms, only to explode back into a stunning climax of “Heart and Soul” romance. A-side closer “Hawaiin Noir” continues exploring realms of 50s pop ethereality, though the vibe is pushed ever further towards South Pacific fantasy. Seed shakers keep a sparse rhythm while surf-stye guitars play doo wop progressions. A gorgeous voice calls out over the crashing waves with ecstatic abandon…like a goddess of the sunrise beckoning the spirit towards a paradise yet undiscovered…the effect so powerful as to literally take your breath away. Another guitar glides into the picture with soft motion solos, starshine electronics twinkle amidst a universal string synth hum, and nearing the end, everything fades into a mirage of meditative metal resonance, wherein Tibetan bowls sing over cricket chirps and crashing waves.
“Cloud Lodge” opens with insects and bongo rhythms surrounded by bubbling liquids. Bell trees flutter and stoner basslines pulse through ethereal shadows as O’Sullivan’s doped out lyricisms ride on sci-fi synths and spaghetti western guitars. New age melodies swim through the cosmos and further six-string accents melt into golden shimmer…all while dub chords delay towards the horizon. Next comes “Moog in Cairo” and its atmospheres of classical jazz meeting otherworldly exotica. There are touches of Omar Khorshid, Diminished Men, and Hosono’s, Suzuki’s, and Yamashita’s Pacific in the surfadelic guitar leads and as Fabien de Menou’s clarinets intertwine with mystical choral cloudforms, hand drums guide the body towards a hidden oasis. Twanging baritones decay towards a blood red sunset and child-like choirs sing songs of forbidden ecstasy amidst guiro scrapes and starshine chime descents....the whole thing like The Ventures tripping acid through a dramatic Hollywood rendering of an Arabian desert landscape. Rainforest percussions filter and pan over kick drums and ethereal gas clouds in “News from Nowhere” before we drop into the main groove, which sees basslines dancing and Peter Magnum’s sci-fi funk riffs crawling across the fretboard while drum machines sketch out robotic exotica patterns. Interstellar hazes blow across the spectrum, carrying with them outer-dimensional orchestrations that again evoke Arabian sunrises as well as the sensual dances of tango, and O’Sullivan’s double tracked vocalisms marry sonorous sensuality and falsetto radiance. Synthesizers gleam like diamonds and noir guitars melt down as ecstatic children sing in support of the increasingly desperate lyricisms…their voices only adding to the sense of haunted disorientation. Elsewhere, the mix reduces to hand drums and static oscillations while vibraphones sparkle like oceanic crystal. And at the end, wave sounds and prayer bowl drones return us to the fourth world environments of “Hawaiian Noir.”
In “Isles in Motion / Shipwreck Bay,” chime strands flow over seaside field recordings while vibraphones and islander hand drums establish a loose exotica groove. Synthetic harps are plucked, morphing fourth world crystals decay into the mix, electronic zithers execute zany runs across a virtual fretboard, and basslines thump through tropical jungle growth while tambourines shake out golden glitter. Eventually, the stereo field washes away as an abstracted voice lectures above the sounds of the sea, presumably signaling entrance into “Shipwreck Bay.” Guitars smear into paradise mesmerism, with touches of Hawaiian psychedelia intermingling with oceanic new age, and ambient angels sing through bodies of cosmic-aquatic light. And as rainbow colorations surround the body in amniotic warmth, tribal drum rolls flow forth from bubbling pools of neon. Helicopter oscillations and mirage guitar shimmer introduce the climactic drum beats of “Secret Fields”…a sort of slow pounding ritualism accented by e-piano chordscapes. Rolling tom fills introduce dirgey basslines while synthesizers howl into the night, bringing touches of progressive rock, only as if slowed to the speed of heroin mesmerism. Vocals flow through lush vocoder fx and evoke a sort of balearic leaning Black Sabbath, though that band’s funereal doom energies are here subverted by Callum Fairely’s dreamscape guitar ascents and these ethereal orchestrations that radiate hues of a Hollywood sunset. Shakers and ride cymbals splash through tide pools while e-pianos sparkle and during a moment where the rhythms fade away, aqueous dolphin songs and mermaid pan-pipe melodies swim across the sky. As the drums return, they stomp unencumbered, although barely-there guitars trace out haunting themes of paradise majesty. Then, after returning to the Sabbath-ian psych rock dirge, the vocals eventually fade away, leaving space for increasingly hallucinogenic tapestries of synthesized symphonic wonderment.

31 Horror Movies in “31 Days”| #Blogoween For the month of October I have planned to watched 31 horror movies!
This is the last blogoween post you’ll see from me, I had to post a day late to give me time to complete this challenge, particularly as I’ve been away since the 17th.
Keep reading to find out the last 9 movies I watched for this gigantic task! I can’t believe I successfully watched 31 even with how busy I’ve been.
If you missed earlier parts, you can read them here: one | two | three
PIRANHA 3D (2010): “Each year the population of sleepy Lake Victoria, Arizona explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 residents for the annual Spring Break celebration. But then, an earthquake opens an underwater chasm, releasing an enormous swarm of ancient Piranha that have been dormant for thousands of years, now with a taste for human flesh. This year, there’s something more to worry about than the usual hangovers and complaints from locals, a new type of terror is about to be cut loose on Lake Victoria.”
Jon, my boyfriend, decided we should give this a watch as he’d seen the original and had heard this was pretty funny too and y’know what, I’ll give him that it was funny.
The poster I’ve added for this movie is a clear indicator of what you’re going to get from this so if youre down for nudity, piranhas, and some bad acting from the guy who plays Jeremy in The Vampire Diaries give this a watch.

THE LOST BOYS (1987): “A mother and her two teenage sons move to a seemingly nice and quiet small coastal California town yet soon find out that it’s overrun by bike gangs and vampires. A couple of teenage friends take it upon themselves to hunt down the vampires that they suspect of a few mysterious murders and restore peace and calm to their town.”
After writing up my post about Vampires I just knew I had to rewatch The Lost Boys and honestly I enjoyed it even more this time around. I LOVE THIS MOVIE and the aesthetic is awesome too.

LOST BOYS: THE TRIBE (2008): “The sequel to the 1987 cult hit The Lost Boys takes us to the shady surf city of Luna Bay, California, where vampires quickly dispatch anyone who crosses their path. Into this dark world arrive Chris Emerson (Hilgenbrink) and his younger sister, Nicole (Reeser). Having just lost their parents in a car accident, the siblings move in with their eccentric Aunt Jillian and become newprey…” I want to be as enthusiastic about this movie as much as the first one but uh its uh not great. The acting is terrible all around but I still enjoyed it though that mostly might be for Corey Feldman.
I’ll happily rewatch it again but I might be the only person who would do so.

JACOBS LADDER (1990): “A traumatized Vietnam war veteran finds out that his post-war life isn’t what he believes it to be when he’s attacked by horned creatures in the subway and his dead son comes to visit him…” I picked this up after Tim Lebbons recommendation and I can definitely see why!
This movie was a wild ride and jumps all over the place with a very nightmarish atmosphere. I agree with the recommendation for this movie for sure.

APOSTLE (2018): “In 1905, a man travels to a remote island in search of his missing sister who has been kidnapped by a mysterious religious cult.” I almost gave up on this movie but after seeing good reviews for it on Letterboxd I gave it a second chance.
This is a slow starting movie but its worth it once the supernatural elements start happening more. I think the whole look of the Goddess and her cage was great.

THE WITCHES (1990): “A young boy named Luke and his grandmother go on vacation only to discover their hotel is hosting an international witch convention, where the Grand High Witch is unveiling her master plan to turn all children into mice. Will Luke fall victim to the witches’ plot before he can stop them?”
THE ADDAMS FAMILY (1991): “Uncle Fester has been missing for 25 years. An evil doctor finds out and introduces a fake Fester in an attempt to get the Addams Family’s money. The youngest daughter has some doubts about the new uncle Fester, but the fake uncle adapts very well to the strange family. Can the doctor carry out her evil plans and take over the Addams Family’s fortune?”
GHOST STORIES (2017): “Professor Phillip Goodman devotes his life to exposing phony psychics and fraudulent supernatural shenanigans. His skepticism soon gets put to the test when he receives news of three chilling and inexplicable cases – disturbing visions in an abandoned asylum, a car accident deep in the woods and the spirit of an unborn child. Even scarier – each of the macabre stories seems to have a sinister connection to the professor’s own life.” I put these three together because one I’m still jetlagged and two I watched all these on the plane to Seoul. It was long and tiring.
The Witches holds a place in my heart as its my favourite Dahl book and the adaptation is spooky but fun too.
The Addams Family is one I could’ve sworn I’d seen before but it really didn’t ring any bells as I watched it. I loved the design, humour, and story of this. Definitely recommend.
Ghost Stories was an odd one for sure. Its 3 short stories kinda that all relate and end up with a surprise ending. It was executed pretty well and its worth giving a try for its atmosphere.

CARRIE (2002): “Carrie White is a lonely and painfully shy teenage girl with telekinetic powers who is slowly pushed to the edge of insanity by frequent bullying from both classmates at her school, and her own religious, but abusive, mother.” As I watched the original and had seen the newest remake on release I thought it only fair I give this one a watch too.
However I’m not so sure this was a good idea. It was fun to see a lot of actors I recognised but mostly I didn’t have a good time and felt like I was watching this for 8 hours…

THE POSESSION (2012): “A young girl buys an antique box at a yard sale, unaware that inside the collectible lives a malicious ancient spirit. The girl’s father teams with his ex-wife to find a way to end the curse upon their child.” I’m currently watching this as I type up this post but it’ll finish before midnight on the 31st so yup that means I’ve done it!! 31 Horror movies in 31 days (shhh forget I started early to make up for my time away).
So far so good with this movie, I’m pretty sure I’ll enjoy it as I don’t have any complaints so far.

I hope you liked this post, I do tend to watch a lot of movies so this could become a regular thing if people are interested.
& thank you for joining my on my little challenge!

Saga of the Swamp Thing #5
Story Title: “The Screams of Hungry Flesh” (main story), “...But the Patient Died!” (back-up feature)
Writer: Martin Pasko (main story), Mike W. Barr (back-up feature)
Artist: Tom Yeates (main story), Tony DeZuniga (back-up feature)
Editor: Len Wein
Colorist: Tatanja Wood (main story), Cal Gafford (back-up feature)
Letterer: John Costanza (main story), Milt Snappin (back-up feature)
Release Date: September 1982
This issue exists in a weird sort of twilight space within Pasko’s run. While the last few issues have been united by the common thread of Swampy’s relationship with the mysterious psychic half-pint, they’ve also been self-contained. This issue acts as kind of a transitional segue into the much more serialized stories that follow. Here we’re introduced to Dr. Dennis Barclay, a massive piece of shit who’s just the absolute worst. Still, that won’t become apparent until a ways on, and here he’s presented as being as sympathetic as a cardboard cut out can be. We’re also reintroduced to fashion disaster/probable Nazi Dr. Harry Kay, who last time we saw him had all of his skin, and more importantly his awful clothes, burned off in a fire.
When we last left our Jolly Green Giant, he was being shipped off to a clinic belonging to the mysterious and sinister Sunderland Corporation after nearly dying in a fight with a child-murdering demon. You know, we’ve all had those days. Arriving at the clinic, Swampy meets Dr. Barclay, who claims to have magic hands. Typically the correct response to any doctor claiming to have “magic hands” is to run away as quickly as possible, but Barclay seems to be telling the truth when he rubs those hands all over Swampy’s chest, healing him. This makes him significantly cooler than our previous handy man, Grasp. (Magic hands are cooler than robo-hands. Sorry to any cyborgs reading this. I don’t make the rules) Barclay has been studying under Dr. Kay for a while, and he views him as a sort of surrogate father. This really blows for Dennis when he finds out that his magic hands are actually just regular old hands, which makes him significantly less cool than Grasp. It also turns out that the clinic hasn’t been using FDA approved methods to heal its patients. Instead they’ve been growing homunculi in a secret basement and pumping the afflicted’s afflictions into those boys instead. Dr. Kay uses one of them to heal his own burns, and we’re treated to the revelation that he’s had a mustache this whole time, hidden by the line work. Naturally the artificial humans aren’t too happy about being made biological scapegoats, and attack Kay and his cronies. Like with Michael Bay’s 2005 science fiction masterpiece The Island, this whole thing could have been avoided if they just lobotomized the suckers before subjecting them to horrifying biological atrocities. The issue ends with Swampy and Liz, now fugitives from Sunderland, hitting the road along with Dennis, because what this series was really missing was a mediocre male protagonist to round out the roster.
This story is... fine. Aside from the obvious of logic of why is this even an issue in the first place, it’s executed well enough to remain interesting. The biggest disappointment is that there’s barely any exploration of what could be an interesting moral quandary, instead using the premise purely for shock value and horror. This is a major missed opportunity, but it’s possible that it was an intentional move to balance out the heaviness of the preceding issue. There’s also some delightfully macabre art near the issue’s end as the abused monstrosities rise up against their abusers. The issue does a decent job of reintroducing Kay back into the fold, establishing him as a major player in the issue to come. The Phantom Stranger backup is a charmingly retro conclusion to last issue’s cliffhanger, and while the reintroduction of Tannarak as a villain isn’t quite as compelling as the anthology format that proceeded it, it’s still a fun little story. All in all, this is a mostly unremarkable issue other than introducing elements that will be important in the stories to come. I’ll see you there.

Inhumans: Once and Future Kings #4 Review
spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers
The plot thickens and the fact that Inhumans love swag is finally revealed in this penultimate installment of writer, Christopher Priest, and artist, Phil Noto’s terrific miniseries. Recap and review following he jump.
The young Inhumans have fled to the human world, fearing a plot to destroy them that may or may not even be accurate. There they have made allies with Bentley Whitman, the human scientist who is secretly the super villain known as The Wizard; as well as a mysterious Alpha Primitive named Elisha whose intellect forces them to question the very tenets of Attilan’s culture and practices. Now Black Bolt, his brother, Maximus, and their cousin, Medusa, are preparing to return home to take down The Living Terrigen and reclaim the throne.
The last issue ended with Black Bolt having spotted The Amazing Spider-Man, mistakenly identifying the friendly neighborhood awl-crawler as a fellow Inhuman who might be recruited to their side int he upcoming battle against The Living Terrigen.
Of course Spidey is not an Inhuman, nor is he one to take kindly to being ordered around by someone assuming to be his king. The encounter quickly devolves into a battle as Spidey is walloped by Black Bolt’s sonic powers (modified and controlled via one of Whitman’s inventions). Yet Spidey is much tougher than expected and he fights back, webbing Black Bolt to an adjacent building. Watching on from he street, Maximus intercedes, using his telepathic powers to try to force Spidey to surrender. And it is here that things get pretty weird.
Maximus’s mental powers do not mix well with the preternatural awareness entailed in Spider-Man’s ‘spider-sense.’ They are two very different versions of psychic power and the interaction of the two creates a bizarre psychic feedback loop. Maximus’ mind is flooded with the thoughts and feelings of Spider-Man as is Spider-Man’s mind flooded with he thoughts and feelings of Maximus.
The feedback is raw and overwhelming for both Spidey and Maximus and neither is able to handle the cognitive/emotional onslaught. Spidey is unable to handle Max’s ambivalent feelings of love and rage toward his brother and is taken by a jealous hatred toward Black Bolt... causing him to attack Black Bolt with a near delusional fury. Maximus, meanwhile, is similarly befuddled by all of the neurotic feelings of guilt and responsibility that he had gleaned from Spidey.
It turns out that Spider-Man was in a bit of a hurry when Black Bolt had encountered him. His aunt is in desperate need of her medication and Spidey (or rather Peter Parker) needed to get photographs to his editors at the Daily Bugle in order to afford Aunt May’s medicine at the local pharmacy. Maximus comes to understand this and he is suddenly taken with the desperate need to get Aunt May her medicine. Spider-Man, meanwhile, fights with Black Bolt whilst voicing all of the mixed up and conflicted feelings that Maximus’ holds toward his brother. He loves his brother, but hates him as well. He feels that he should sit on the throne, that he is the one destined to rule Attilan.
The fight between Spidey and Black Bolt is interrupted by the arrival of Kaldec The Seeker. The Seeker attacks, but is quickly defeated by the combined efforts of Spider-Man and Black Bolt. This interruption proves to be just what is needed in order for cooler heads to prevail. Black Bolt, Spidey and Maximus realize that they are not enemies. Furthermore, the importance of getting Aunt May her medicine takes precedence.
All of this leads to an amusing scene where Maximus rushes into the pharmacy demanding the prescription for a patient first name ‘Aunt’ last name ‘May.’ I love this bit.
Medusa has somehow tracked down Max and approaches him in the pharmacy. Maximus is still somewhat affected by all of the thoughts and feeling he gleaned from Spidey’s mind and it’s quite stirring for Medusa to see this softer side of her cousin. The two are eventually able to get Aunt May’s prescription and make haste to deliver it. In so doing, Maximus accidentally drops the last of his own medication, antipsychotic capsules that he has been told are necessary to keep his madness at bay. The pharmacist notices this after the two have left. He inspects the capsule and realizes that it is merely a placebo, just sugar and water. whoa…
Maximus and Medusa take a cab to Queens where Max delivers the medicine to Aunt May. Back in the cab, Maximus notices that he had lost his own medication and is beset by the worry that now his own madness will return. He is still processing through the feelings and values he had gleaned from Spidey, causing him to wax on about the sanctity of life, about what a kind and gentle soul this May Parker is; how much he had misjudged the nature of the humans of earth. He kisses Medusa in a fit of impulsivity. Medusa is initially taken aback by Max’s actions… yet after seeing this kinder, softer side of him her feelings seem to change and she kisses him back. wha!?!
As all of this is occurring, the narrative switched back to Attilan where young Crystal meets the Stewardship King and his new Viceroy, Gorgon. With the aid of Lockjaw, Crystal is confident that she can go to the human world and convince her sister and the others to return home; and The Living Terrigen offers her his blessing promising that no harm will come to the runaway royals.
Crystal and Lockjaw teleport back to the apartment of Bentley Whitman, where Crys discovers Elisha. She is surprised to find an Alpha who can speak and wears the clothes of a human. Elisha seems to know Crystal’s parents (might they have been the ones who taught him to read?). In any case, Elisha is able to convince Crystal that he is on her side, that he can lead her to her sister and then they can all return to Attilan together. Of course doing this requires a bit of bribery as Crys insists on some ice-cream as well as Elisha’s baseball cap (because Inhumans love swag :3).
Elisha is happy to give up his cap, after all he has a new hat and dons the battle helmet designed by Whitman (a side panel shows that Whitman had returned home and Elisha had knocked him out, thieving the inventors’ weapons). Uh oh…
A third storyline is also weaved throughout the narrative this one focusing on Triton and his brother, Karnak. Triton had been captured by a movie crew that had been filming some sort of see monster creature-feature (a story that was actually detailed way back in the pages of The Mighty Thor vol. 1 #’s 150-151). Triton had been offered up to some sort of research agency, studying him as though he were some mysterious alien species. The chemicals used to clean the tank where Triton is kept had befuddled his sense, but he has finally been able to clear his mind and manages to communicate with the researcher studying him. And in so doing manages to get her to let him go.
Soon there after, Triton locates his brother, Karnak, who has been searching for him; catching up with Karnak as he takes a ride not he ferris-wheel at Coney Island (okay?). In any case, Karnak and Triton are reunited and the two make haste to reunite with the others.
And all of this is leading up to the final confrontation where each of these various plot lines, secrets and true motives will come together and be revealed in the last issue of the series. Just cant’s wait for that!
There’s a whole lot to unpack here, not including the continuity weirdness where Black Bolt is apparently younger than Spider-Man. It remains to be seen whether or not The Living Terrigen is as benevolent a stewardship king as he claims or if he indeed has eyes to do away with Black Bolt and keep the throne for himself. Elisha’s fate is equally mysterious… will he be responsible for Attilan’s decision to do away with the Slave Engine? Maximus’ antipsychotic medication have been placebos all along; what does that reveal about the nature of his mental illness? And what’s all this with Medusa and Maximus making all kissy-face?
The device of having Maximus and Spider-Man experience a mental feedback loop acts as a really cool means of depicting the intense and confusing ambivalence that Max feels toward his brother. And the fact that Spidey’s dialogue was able to express this whist at the same time stay in tune with his knack for funny banter is really impressive. It’s seamless and funny, but also complex and poignant and a testament to Christopher Priest’s skills as a writer.
As much as I enjoyed the scenes between Spider-Man, Black Bolt and Maximus, I was a little let down by how quickly the side plot involving Triton and Karnak resolved. It almost felt like Mr. Priest might have had a slightly longer series in mind, but was forced to truncate and expedite matters to have things conclude faster than initially anticipated. It was also a bit confusing as to how Medusa was able to so easily locate Maximus at the pharmacy; likewise how it was that Whitman got home to soon and was taken down by Elisha. I wonder if this series was originally designed as being six issues long, but reworked to being just five issue after the fact. Still, it’s a minor complaint in that Priest and Noto work so well together that it doesn’t require too much imagination to read in-between the lines. That and I’m fine with clunky narrative jumps if it facilitates a scene as wonderfully bizarre as Maximus hugging the ‘reverend Aunt May.’
The final issue is sure to be a bittersweet affair. I cannot wait to see what happens, to learn how all of this will resolve, but I’ll also be quite saddened to see this series come to an end in that it has been such an absolute joy to read. And, as always, Phil Not’s illustration is second to none. I’ve always loved the way in which Mr. Noto draws figures and faces, yet in this series what has truly impressed me has been his deft skill for action, panel composition and backgrounds. The battle between Spidey and Black Bolt was just terrifically dynamic, cinematic; and the quieter scene between Max and Medusa was equally intense, but n a softer, more romantic fashion. I’m pretty much out of adjectives to laud Mr. Noto’s work. It’s just so good! He could illustrate the phonebook and I’d eagerly lap up each page!
Oh, and there’s a fun two page Lockjaw backup feature by Ryan North and Gustavo Durante. It’s basically a quick depiction of how the upcoming movie, Avengers: Infinity War should go down...
A quick thought on Maximus’ taking placebo medication before ending this review. Placebos are actually rather commonly utilized in psychiatry. A patient’s expectations and beliefs about a given medicine can be sometimes be just as powerful as any actual pharmaceutical agent. Of course doctors would never prescribe placebos for severe conditions, but products like St. John’s Wart or Ginkgo Biloba (which have no discernible medicinal values) have nonetheless often succeeded in proving highly effective in countless clinical situations.
That said, offering a placebo for psychosis is just unheard of. And this suggests that Maximus’ doctor may not believe that Max truly suffers from schizophrenia. Perhaps Maximus’ ‘madness’ is merely a product of his imagination, a means of coping with his terrible feelings of guilt over his role in the accident that caused his parents’ deaths. To this extent, the doctor prescribed Max the placebos in the hope that Max’s mere belief that the medication would curb his madness would in and of itself prove effective. Fascinating.
Another great and definitely recommended installment. I wish this series was never to come to an end! Four out of Five Lockjaws.
