It has been just a few episodes since Cas rebelled for him and he already treats him like his brother, like he is family.

In 5x06, Dean is suddenly acting like a little kid with a big crush

This happens after Dean n' Cas bond over facing off against Raphael. After Zachariah transports Dean to a dreamscape + Cas saves him, "we had an appointment."

It seems like, after that, something has happened to Dean. He's borderline giddy to see Cas here. He puts a whoopee cushion in his seat:

CASTIEL pulls out a whoopee cushion, presumably the one DEAN bought earlier. DEAN: Who put that there?

And I swear it's like Dean tries to defuse the Sam and Cas disagreement (Dean's tone + his body language). He has a rather gentle-but-horrified reaction to Cas wanting to kill a kid, and he tries to talk Cas down.

And then there's his reaction to the Cas action figure:

JESSE points at the floor: there is an action figure wearing CASTIEL's suit and trench coat and holding a silver knife. DEAN kneels to pick him up and looks up at SAM, then JESSE. DEAN sets the CASTIEL action figure on the mantelpiece. JESSE is sitting on the couch, SAM on a chair.

SAM examines the CASTIEL action figure and puts him back on the mantel without any of the care DEAN showed.

And when the Cas figure falls:

DEAN leans down and gently picks up the CASTIEL action figure, which fell down at some point. DEAN: Look, uh, truth is, he's kind of a buddy of mine. Is there any way you could turn him back? JESSE: He tried to kill me. DEAN: Right. Uh. But he's a—he's a good guy. He was just confused. JESSE says nothing. DEAN: Okay. It's been a long night. We'll...talk about it later.

DEAN puts the CASTIEL action figure back on the mantel.

And what happens after this? Changing Channels, where Dean again expresses a preoccupied concern for Cas:

DEAN finishes brushing his teeth and spits. DEAN: I'm worried, man. What that SOB did to Cas. You know, where is he?

I feel like this is the timeframe that Dean moved a bit beyond "camaraderie" and got a little fluttery and giddy for the dork in a trenchcoat. (Like just a little bit, like: "Oh, no. Not him. Fuck off, butterflies.")

Dean also starts to worry about Cas. What a horrible development for him.
