Okay but seriously, I'm more than happy to explain. I assume that if you're asking this question you're not aware of the proshipper vs antishipper, uh, "conflict", I guess. So, here is what both of those terms mean, to the best of my descriptive abilities:

Antishipper (often just "anti"): someone who vaguely believes that consuming problematic fiction (usually specifically problematic sexual fiction like lolicon or incest) is either a true reflection of them as a person or a corrupting force that will cause them to play out these desires in real life, onto real people. Basically, if you read age gap, you touch real kids in real life or secretly want to.

Proshipper (sometimes "profic"): someone who does not believe the above, and believes that fiction is not the same as reality because it doesn't harm anyone and therefore people should be left alone as long as you have no reason to believe that they would ever do something like that irl. Often hand in hand with things like anti censorship, kink positive, etc, though being a proshipper does not necessarily mean you have a problematic ship or kink yourself (example: me).

You're probably asking this question because you saw me day in my bio that I am a proshipper. I've tried to stay neutral in this initial description, but obviously I probably didn't manage to be completely unbiased considering that I believe myself to be right (most people do) so if you want to ask further questions after this that's perfectly fine. That being said:

Why am I a proshipper?

So, to understand this, let's first look over the issues within both communities— every group has issues, after all.

What problems do proshippers have?:

- sometimes 4chan assholes co-opt the label "proshipper" just because they're lolicons, even though there's good evidence to suggest that they would do or even have done criminal sexual acts in real life, or that they possess actual csam (child sexual abuse material, a term being used in favor of "cp" these days as porn implies consent). Proshipping has nothing to do with the harmful idea that you should be allowed to exploit and abuse real children.

- there are still many gray areas which proshippers themselves don't agree on. For example: I've seen a bunch of arguments about if writing fanfiction of live action shows or movies changes the equation. The general consensus of proshippers is that writing fanfiction of a character played by a child actor is definitely a more delicate situation and should not be sexual as it's inextricably tied to the image of a real child, but there are others who believe differently.

- I'm genuinely struggling to come up with more of these. Um, sometimes lolicons are really shitty people, like in point 1. This isn't SUPER relevant though cause in reality the overlap between predominantly queer or female proshippers and Reddit incels who just wanna jerk off to a petite anime girl is pretty small, though I'm sure it exists somewhere .

Now, what problems do antis have? (Fair warning, this is gonna sound even more "biased" but I hope my logic is still sound from the outside :p):

- I don't have any statistics on this (haven't exactly been many research papers on fandom drama), so you're going to have to trust me when I say that antis are absolutely NOTORIOUS for extreme harassment campaigns. The first time I was exposed to the word "antishipper", it was attached to a story of a former animator committing suicide because antis had gotten them fired by "exposing" their porn alt on Twitter and they could no longer afford medication for their disability. So, hell of an intro!

- their opinions are, in pretty basic ways, not backed by science or even practical common sense. The human brain can distinguish between fiction and reality after around age four or five

and people certainly aren't trying to hand nsfw content to children that age so I think it's safe to say that the people who are reading these things won't be "confused" by them or whatever. Also, even just using your brain and talking to these people, you find out most of them project onto the YOUNGER character.

- they claim to support victims but often simply don't. I won't keep dragging threats into the spotlight because I know there are probably antis who aren't as violent, but it's honestly astonishing to me how often they jump straight to wishing death and terrible things on people, and this has included more than once telling a rape victim they hope they get assaulted again just because they're a proshipper. See, a lot of these "taboo" sexual fantasies like age gap and incest actually themselves stem from a traumatic experience, and any therapist will tell you that fiction is a much healthier way to explore intrusive thoughts and urges than more dangerous coping mechanisms like self harm or substance abuse. And when confronted with this, in my experience and many others', antis will simply ignore that fact or say that the therapist is some sort of evil enabler.

-the general cognitive dissonance of believing an incest fanfiction will make you "forget" that incest is bad vs being fine with horror movies and slashers speaks to a deeper and honestly kind of worrying anti-sex mindset. I'm not sure I'm qualified to tackle this particular topic, but I definitely agree that it's a thing; after all, I have no idea how else those two things could coexist.

Anyways, I'd like to close this off by saying not everyone is as crazy opinionated as I am, I'm just autistic and like talking lol. A lot of people who id as proshippers just have a sort of minding their own business, ship-and-let-ship mentality, and a lot of antis are unfortunately just teenagers who were told proshipper = evil pedophile groomer and thus they put "proship dni" in their bios just cause they don't know and don't really care what it means. It is undeniable that many antis are kids themselves, and that does worry me, because fandom drama (especially Twitter fandom drama) is dangerous and vitriolic and also they're putting extremely serious threats on their digital footprints at the tender age of 14! But whatever, I'm not their parents, that's just my worry. Sorry for rambling this long lol, I wouldn't blame you if you dropped out halfway through but this is basically my summary of this whole thing. Do with this knowledge what you will! Or, you know, don't! I'm not a cop!

I think the most annoying thing about this, is that people still do support you but can't say that publicly for fear of being taken down as well.

I think why I get so upset when people deny how "normal" men are because I used to be a "not like other girls" 4chan posting reddit lurking awful woman.

I only hung out with men since I was a kid. Iv been there. I worked at a scrap yard for a time.

Things I said perpetuated and betrayed other women. All for some male validation. It makes me fucking sick.

My "friends" all watched one of their boys feed me alcohol until I was pretty much blacked out. They watched him drag (because I couldn't even hold myself up) me into his room and lock the door. One of them even let me know quietly that he saw the guy make my drinks much stronger once I was too drunk to notice. He apologized for not saying anything. All of them professed "good guys". All of them my friend since we had been 4 years old.

We all went back to hanging out like nothing happened, because to them nothing happened. I just got too drunk and hooked up with one of them. I believed it too for a time.

This is all to say, even I, their "one of the boys" female friend was not safe.

If I had seen this happen to another girl we were hanging out with I would have spoke up I would have said something. Even if I had convinced myself that what happened to me was my fault for drinking too much, I would not have let it happen to another woman.

This may border on victimblaming, but most of stories about how someone was "groomed" online that I saw (I didn't research it, mind you, just what crossed my dashboard) read to me as "I am a total dumbass who doesn't have common sense and I am going to blame everyone for this".

Like older* guy on forum who talks about how you being offline makes him want to kill himself is not a good man, and neither are any other kinds of "online groomers", but literally nothing about technology makes them more dangerous.

(*Assuming that he is in fact older, I also was "in my early 30s" online since I was 12, but that's not that important because him living who the fuck knows where makes any actual power imbalance irrelevant, and teenagers are very much capable of being cruel and manipulative).

In fact, online interactions are way safer for kids because they fucking can close the tab and forget about everything that happened. Restrictions on children's access to internet doesn't help them. I am not even going to talk about how abusive families can be - outside of home is also not that safe, and people actually may have power over you. In my high school there were rumours about certain teachers sleeping with certain students. I don't know were they true, but I myself was present when one of our teachers went on a discussion about how it's better for schoolgirls to date college students and graduates to "get better experience". People who live close to you may be very gross and bigoted, in fact there is someone close to you and bigoted. Slightly older people can tell about absolutely awful culture of teen neighborhood groups (idk if there was something like that in USA but that's when people of one urban neighborhood hang out together purely because they live close by).

Mind you, I grew up on my local equivalent of 4chan, and while I don't think that it was good for me, the grossest experiences I had were all IRL. Yes, some of those anons may be totally inhuman, but I didn't have to listen to their bullshit, while IRL I had not only to listen but to politely agree, or the middle aged man with ego of a toddler and the middle aged woman who believes in every conspiracy on Earth and the teenage boy who thinks that he is the protagonist of life will be offended, and I am a good kid so I shouldn't make them sad :(

P.S.: Anecdotally, "normie" online places felt way grosser than imageboards. Part of it may be because it was before Trump ruined online everywhere, part of it that those "normie" online places were not as normal as they liked to pretend, but I think that the correct answer is that 4chan is not some malicious entity that corrupts our world, not even really marginal group - it's just content of middle class cranium without flattering makeup of civility. Yeah, definitely, it’s an extension of the “stranger danger” model of abuse instead of the reality where most abuse comes from people you know that have power over you, whether it be in a family, school, or work setting. I was constantly told not to talk to strangers online because they’re dangerous by a family member who was literally abusing me lol.

Sure! They executively decided to pretty much pretend it doesn't exist!

I kid, it's far deeper than that. I can't say too much because part of it has to do with the EPF being there, but publicly: nothing is happening. New York has gone totally silent, had all their outgoing communications cut and the evidence of what's happening scrubbed from the internet. People who have left NYC are being monitored, in some cases being 'encouraged' to keep quiet about where they're from and why they left, or even gaslighted and told that they were obviously suffering from the mass hysteria that had gripped the city and they're testing the water for LSD or something. A few people have been committed. News outlets from international news channels to somewhat-successful youtubers are being told not to talk about New York.

This has all had middling success in actually hiding what's happening, obviously-you can't scrub anything from the internet, it's not being shared so blatantly but the videos and pictures are still up on sites like 4chan. There's a disinformation campaign to convince everyone that it's fake (think the 'Pallywood' claims going around now) but still. And you can't just take out New York. It's the economic and cultural capital of the world. Their sudden disappearance and absence is extremely seen.

This was still seen as preferable to telling the world that there are a race of nonhumans living under New York City turning humans into mutants and wanting to destroy society. They do plan on doing that at some point, but they need like...a plan first. Especially considering this happens right after COVID starts, there's a real risk of people panicking and they need to do this in a way that won't result in billions of people collectively flipping their lid. At the very least they need to look like they're in control of the situation.

Absolutely none of this is being decided by Trump, btw, he's being followed around by a guy with an airhorn so he can be shushed up whenever he can't keep his big mouth shut, and that's if they bothered to brief him on it at all. (idk what the point would be, it's not like he actually did his job ever) This is all Pence and his cronies, maybe some senators.

I've kept this blog pretty politically neutral for the most part, but I feel like making fun of Trump is pretty safe in this fandom. I mean, most of us are queer, pretty much all of us are Millennial/Gen Z. Half of you aren't even American. (I know there's a weird Trump Canadian following and you in the UK have Tories, but I don't see those people being here either) And my house is rabidly anti-Trump. Like, we make jokes about our bird being a Trump supporter kind of brainrot. My mother has CNN on pretty much constantly and I have fantasies about smashing the television with a hammer.

A disturbing recurrence in 2023: Individuals hiding behind anonymous usernames (especially on 4chan) making online threats to kill Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood.

The latest incident, a Pennsylvania man arrested for threatening Volusia Sheriff’s deputy Royce James, is the first not directly addressed to the sheriff; however, it adds to the several directed at the official this year.

The situation began in February, after Chitwood and other county leaders called out a group known as the Goyim Defense League for a variety of antisemitic activities reported in Volusia County, including displaying antisemitic signs on a pedestrian overpass leading to the Daytona International Speedway the weekend of the Daytona 500.

In addition to the most recent threat, six others have been made against Chitwood this year, mostly from individuals outside of Florida.

Some of those extradited even received a not-so-friendly greeting from the sheriff himself as they arrived in Volusia County.

Here is a look at each case:

1. New Jersey man accused of threatening to murder Chitwood

The first threat came in the beginning of March, when Richard Golden, 38, of Monmouth Junction, New Jersey, was charged with second-degree felony written threats to kill or injure.

According to the sheriff’s office, Golden used the 4chan chatroom to write: “Just shoot Chitwood in the head and he stops being a problem. They have to find a new guy to be the problem. But shooting Chitwood in the head solves an immediate problem permanently. Just shoot Chitwood in the head and murder him.”

During a press conference announcing the arrest, Chitwood said Golden was an unemployed, anti-law enforcement person who was living in a back bedroom at his mother's house.

"Once he is extradited, he will be housed at the happiest place on earth, the Volusia County Branch Jail,” Chitwood said.

Last week, a judge denied a request by Golden’s defense to dismiss the charge against him, arguing that his comments were not a “true threat.”

2. California man accused of threatening to kill Chitwood

At the end of March, San Diego police arrested Tyler Meyer, 30, at a home where he lived with his mother.

Meyer was the second individual charged with threatening the Volusia sheriff in 2023.

Meyer was charged with making a written threat to kill or injure, a second-degree felony.

He is also accused of posting his threat on 4chan: “It’s too bad Mike Chitwood isn’t safe now that I’m planning to kill him. I’m going to shoot Mike Chitwood. I’m going to kill him by shooting him to death.”

Meyer was extradited to Volusia County in April.

"Tyler, I'm Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood," the sheriff said as Tyler Meyer descended an airport escalator with two law enforcement escorts by his side. "Welcome to Volusia County, Florida. Enjoy your stay."

"Thank you," Meyer replied.

Meyer posted a $100,000 bond on May 19 and was released from the Volusia County Branch Jail, according to court records.

3. Connecticut man third 4chan user accused of threatening Chitwood

Cristhian Zapata, of Ansonia, Connecticut, was arrested by the Shelton Police Department on a felony warrant for making a written threat to kill Chitwood.

According to police, Zapata, 23, wrote on 4chan: “I WILL KILL CHITWOOD, MARK MY WORDS.” _______________________

Authorities traced Zapata’s message to his Connecticut home, where he lived with his sister, her fiancé and her child.

According to the sheriff’s office, Zapata’s sister told authorities that her brother was fascinated with Adolf Hitler and was always on his computer, often participating in extremist chat rooms and “talking to unknown people about conspiracy theories and white supremacist ideology.”

Zapata was extradited in May, and although Chitwood was not present at his arrival, he tweeted: "Sorry I wasn’t able to join the welcoming committee this time. Enjoy your stay.”

Zapata pleaded no contest Sept. 27 to written threats to kill or do bodily injury. He faces up to 15 years in prison.

4. Canadian man accused of threatening Chitwood

Calgary, Alberta, police arrested Tony Stromberg, of Calgary, in June after authorities said he “made repeated threats over Twitter, via email, and in phone calls to sheriff’s office employees.”

He is also accused of sending emails threatening to murder the sheriff and his family members, according to the sheriff’s office.

"In a follow-up email in March, Stromberg wrote that he had made an 'obviously much more credible threat' but was disappointed that 'not one police car let alone FBI car has pulled up to my house,'” said sheriff's office spokesman Andrew Gant.

Stromberg will not be extradited to Volusia County; he was charged with uttering threats to cause death and is expected to be tried in Canada.

5. Deltona man accused of threatening to kill Chitwood

Ethan Russell, 22, of Deltona was already in jail when in July he was charged with threatening to kill Chitwood.

Russell had been in jail since May for trespassing at a construction site where he attempted suicide, according to the arrest report.

He had also been put on probation three years ago for threatening to conduct a mass shooting, and threatening to bomb and burn down federal buildings and high schools.

Russell wrote in a letter that he would run Chitwood over with a car, and if that didn't kill him, he said he would beat him to death and burn his body with napalm, according to the arrest report.

6. Alaska man already indicted on murder charges accused of threatening to ‘blind and kill’ Chitwood

Joshua Wahl, 31, of Dillingham, Alaska, who had already been indicted for two counts of murder in his home state, was again indicted this week for threatening the Volusia sheriff.

He was indicted on one count of cyberstalking and four counts of transmitting threats in interstate commerce.

Wahl is accused of making the threats both via email and through 4chan between March and April, which included to “blind and kill,” according to the sheriff’s office.

“Not every loser threatening violence on the internet gets caught, but I’m glad one more is getting a dose of reality,” Chitwood said in response to the indictment.

It is unclear when Wahl will be extradited to Volsuia County.

The Minotaur of Lloret de Mar is something of a climax to this arc, the White Jester arc. jordan has to do his last job for his cruel employer. his quest takes him to the town of Lloret.

this was back when ogtrib was still particularly roman a clef, as that method worked well for act 1 (though it lost its practicality for later acts). when I wrote these logs back in 2011, I was in fact going on a vacation to lloret, taking a coach through france. lloret has been a part of my dad's family for a long time, For Some Reason, and every now and then I got to see it too. it is a beautiful town. highly recommended, if you're ever in spain. I don't like to think back on that particular vacation. wasn't entirely a good one for me. like, frankly, 2011 was like that. 2011 was in the middle of some really bad years in my life. but I could at least write about it. and the rapture version of the lloret trip is instead a fairly lighthearted.. dark comedy little segment of the story. it has a minotaur. it has rabbit holes. and it's jordan on his own, which isn't actually that common in the story.

anyway. where am I going with this. there's something about the way this log turned out. that's like. it's almost the first instance of a growing focus on action sequences. I won't say that they'll all feel like the minotaur sequence. I mean, in earlier drafts they kinda did. but you'll just have to wait and see how revisions have... worked.

also we are in the part of act 1 now where the Attacheds are growing much more of a narrative focus. demonstrating that these Attacheds can also serve as a... what would you call it, a B-plot? A counter-narrative? there are many voices who write the Attacheds, but one voice writes far more than any other, a voice that I can now safely refer to as "Thoth." Thoth wrote today's as well. and Thoth brings a very... book-like feel to ogtrib. Thoth is relevant to the idea of ogtrib as a book.

..wanna jump back in with one last point, though, because I took another look at the log and noticed some language in there that jumped out at me. an important aspect of rapture is that, in the real world, the internet bleeds out into reality. they're not separate worlds, the internet is just a continuation of the regular world. and back in 2011, 4chan was a far bigger aspect of internet culture. so rapture addresses some 4chan stuff. some, mind you-- I was a kid who did not frequent that website-- but, as I did see the internet as a Part Of The World, and as I did see ogtrib as a story that must Address These Things, there are.. instances like the graffiti in this log. can also say my adherence to that drops off significantly as we get into the rest of the story. just, it's not a coincidence that jordan himself does not use that language.

Like I'm so invested in the psychologies of it all, like mob mentalities that fueled twitter around 2016 era because of the political climates, the evolution of Tumblr reputation from being the deep thinking site to the SJW site to what it is now, the constant eye watching and surveillances baked into daily internet life, the removal of safe internet spaces for kids in the late 2010s to early 2020s after shift in profit priorities from companies and how it affected culture going forward, hell fuckin gen z as a whole is something analyse too
