after many years my old company has finally allowed people back into the office, haha, not to go to work, no no, solely to collect their belongings from their desks. i picked up my stuff and remembered what a psycho i was about my office back then, let me show you..
i set up an old VT-420 on a side of my desk to read my email on (to flex my computer dick) which is unfortunately a bit too yellowed now for me to post exposed but hilariously enough i did take the chance to fix the faulty RS-232 chip in it and i no longer get a bunch of keystrokes interpreted as ŸŸŸŸs randomly. the fix was great too, instead of having to throw the whole thing out like you'd need to today, i literally just had to pull the PTH chip out of its socket, didn't even need to desolder. nor throw the old one out. i blasted it with a blowtorch for about half a second and it's fine now.
youtube
(it is amber by the way, which is the best color)
the keyboard is another story, i think a lot of like, entry-level vintage computing people get this concept that every old keyboard is some treasure, and boy let me tell you, some of them make you want throw up, like the vt420's:
Tumblr media
you'll have to take my word that the typing experience is pure ass, but if you look at this fucker for more than two seconds your blood pressure will start to raise. and i'm not just talking about the euro return key. where is the super key? and what is going on left of 'a'? did they decide to solve the age-old "caps lock vs ctrl" debate by putting both of them there (??) what the fuck is going on north of the arrow keys?!?! and even further north, 'help' is funny enough on its own, the fact its next to DO, a truly existentially puzzling key, makes it that much better. why is DO so wide?? why are there so many F keys? and apparantly 20 F keys wasn't enough, they had to go on and invent "PF" keys above the numpad. and it doesn't stop there..
the pre-USB world was pretty nuts, but most keyboards still had sane connectors like DE-9's, PS/2, DINs, etc, but not this one
Tumblr media
it uses, a, uh, looks like an ethernet cable. weird. but look closer. six pins. AND, big honking square to key it specifically and make it incompatible with the very-similar already-existing 6P6C specification (why?) anyways, that's enough of this crap, moving on
Tumblr media
this is the keyboard for my lisp machine, the famous "space cadet keyboard", i get so many fucking emails about this keyboard, christ almighty. people trying to buy it from me, it's a shame, the machines don't boot without them so seperating them to satisfy reddit guy wish fulfillment breaks my heart. it's a lot better. it's from an era where a good computer would set you back half a million and the hardware reflects it. honeywell made it, it's "solid state" insofar as that makes sense for a keyboard, uses the hall effect. there weren't any rats at my office but just in case i seem to have taped something to the underside:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
lol. now for accouterments to cover those hideous eggshell white walls:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
in order, openbsd, you know it baby, middle is a weird polish promo for the holy mountain, the last thing was a joke whose meaning has been lost to time. chicken and turkey!
i seemed to have been working on some very bizarre electronics projects, personal, during my workday:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
god, what the fuck was this?
Tumblr media
oh, duh, it's bort's hat. (??)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
some reading materials. K&R C is a first edition, somewhat rare. the 9front manuals:

classic, natch. and a huge gear that's clapped

that's it. that's my office apparently.

The best place to buy souvenirs in Moscow, Russia is easily Izmailovsky Market. It’s located just outside the city center and is easy to get to via the metro. The prices here are a fraction of what you’ll pay on Arbat Street for the same souvenirs… and you can barter!
Izmailovsky Kremlin (Market) during winter.
My husband and I went here countless times to buy souvenirs for friends and family members. We also took anyone who visited us in Moscow to this market to show them what it’s all about! Because even if you aren’t looking to purchase souvenirs, Izmailovsky Market is a fun way to spend a few hours exploring on a weekend. There is a lot to see and also eat here!
This post is breaking down what to know before you go…and explaining why you must visit Izmailovsky Market if you’re visiting Moscow.
How to Get to Izmailovsky Market
The Metro
The quickest (usually) and most cost-effective way to get to Izmailovsky Market is by taking the metro. If you’re a new visitor to Moscow, I know the metro can sound intimidating. However, you MUST try out the metro while here – as it’s seriously as beautiful as a museum. (Click here for more tips about taking the metro in Moscow.)
For example, from Red Square, you can get on the metro at Ploschad’ Revolyutsii and take it to Partizanskaya stop. This will take about 30 minutes and cost 55 rubles (less than $1 USD.)  You can purchase one-way tickets at the metro station or you could also purchase a Troika card if you plan on using the metro more than a couple of times while in Moscow. (This is a reusable card you can put money on for the metro.)
Google Maps is getting better in Moscow… however, Yandex Metro is still the best app to use for figuring out which metros to take in Moscow.
Taxi
Another option is to use the Gett or Yandex Taxi Apps to take a cab. The last time I went from the city center to Izmailovsky Market via taxi, it came out to about $5 or $6 USD. This does take longer than the metro, though. This will take at least 40 minutes of driving and sometimes more if the traffic or weather is bad.
When to Visit Izmailovsky Market
Technically the market is open every day from 10 am to 6 pm. However, during the week many of the vendors are not there.
The best time to visit is on either a Saturday or Sunday between 11 am and 4 pm. (If you get there too early or too late, you’ll find some stalls aren’t set up yet or they’re already closed for the day.)
If visiting on a weekend is impossible for your schedule, the next best day to visit is on a Wednesday.
You’ll Need Cash!
Except for a few stalls, cash is the only way you’ll be able to pay for anything here! If you end up running out of cash (which may or may not have happened to me on occasion), the best spot to take more cash out is an ATM inside the lobby of Izmailovo Beta Hotel, which is just across from the Izmailovsky Market. You can also take out very large sums of money at this ATM – if you end up finding A LOT of goodies at the market!
You Can Barter Here
Izmailovsky Market is one of the only places you’ll be able to barter for your souvenirs. So be prepared to haggle a bit! (Most stall owners speak multiple languages or will use a calculator to haggle prices.) For example, the stalls selling fur hats (pictured above) can sometimes start as high as 3,000 – 4,000 rubles for a hat. However, we generally bought them for 1,000 – 1,200 rubles. (They were really popular Christmas gifts for family members last year, haha!)
Me with my favorite handmade nesting doll souvenir!
Not every single stall will be willing to barter, though. My favorite stall sells handmade Matryoshka dolls (pictured above), and she generally did not budge on her prices as they were already fairly priced and all of her things are handmade. (Her stall is on the end across from the stairs leading up to the area where rugs are for sale.)
There Are Food Stands
You can come hungry to Izmailovsky Market as there are food stand selling kebabs, hot dogs and various goodies. You can also buy drinks and even alcohol here. The stands pictured above mainly sell kebabs, but there are more options as you move toward the museum area of the market (follow signs for the Vodka Museum and you’ll see more food options). There are also food and drink carts being pushed around the market.
Selling beverages throughout the market…
More dining options by the museums.
… and Also Museums!
There are also a bunch of little museums inside the market. Frankly, anytime I came to the market I was usually on a mission to buy something, so the only museum we’ve ever actually gone into is the Vodka Museum. It’s not the most exciting museum in the world… but it’s an interesting way to spend an hour or so. Plus, you can also sample different vodkas (and there are some fun beer options too if you’re not a vodka drinker).
Vodka Museum Photos
Be Sure to Dress Comfortably!
You will be on your feet a lot while at this market, and it can get rather muddy and slushy depending on the time of year you are visiting. Be sure to wear appropriate footwear. This is almost all outdoors, so be prepared and dress VERY warmly if you go in winter. (I usually would wear boots, thick socks, long underwear, a thick sweater and a puffy winter coat and hat and gloves anytime I went in winter).
The best example of what I would wear to the market in winter.
Best Souvenirs to Buy at Izmailovsky Market
I’ll do an entire blog post on the best souvenirs to buy in Russia. (That’s coming on Wednesday!) But a quick overview of souvenirs to buy here includes:
Matryoshka dolls (nesting dolls)
Fur hats (or faux fur hats)
Podstakanniks (tea glass holders)
Amber jewelry
Traditional clothes
Fabergé egg replicas
Few More Things to Note:
If you’re looking for some colorful “Instragrammable Places” to take photos – Izmailovsky has you covered! The area by the main entrance, and where the museums are, has a lot of colorful walls and buildings that make for fun photos.
A LOT of the vendors do not want you taking photos of their stalls – this is because (at least some of them) are selling handmade things that they do not want people replicating. If you’re unsure ask. (Or also, look for signs – many stalls will have signs that indicate they do not want photos taken.)
Ask before taking photos like this… Not all vendors will allow it.
While there are tons of souvenirs to choose from here… there is also a section of the market that is essentially a big “garage sale.” This is where locals bring in antiques or just old junk to sell. I know nothing about antiques – so, I never bought any, but there is a TON to choose from!
Random garage sale items!
There are also stalls selling bear skin rugs and other various animal furs. While they are quite reasonably priced for such things – be sure you know your country’s laws for importing animal furs/skins if you buy something like this! You may have some paperwork or hefty fines to pay if you don’t do your homework…
Please feel free to ask any questions you may have about visiting in the comments section at the end of the post. I’ll do my best to answer them all!

Travel Insurance
It’s a good idea, no matter where your adventure takes you, to have travel insurance. You never know what might happen! Whether you get sick before your trip and can’t go, or you become sick or injured while on your adventure – being covered with travel insurance is a must. Some credit card companies do provide this service (check with yours), or you can get a quote from companies such as RoamRight. To get your free quote, click here.

Week Three: New Faces and New Places
Tumblr media
La Casona, the hostel up the hill, at happy hour.
Wow, time flies! I’m already one third of the way through my time here at EcoSwell. This week sped by. Last weekend involved a fun adventure, and then I settled back into the weekly routine of the EcoHouse, cooking some more fun meals and enjoying getting to know the new interns.
The EcoHouse
Tumblr media
Veggie burger night!!
As I mentioned in last week’s blog, we had three volunteers leave and two new ones arrive last weekend. Javi, Dion, and Kyler all left and Brady and Joris arrived!
Brady is from Mississippi and is taking online classes through University of Northern Mississippi. He is super into skiing and actually almost moved to Bellingham recently. He lived in Taos, New Mexico for a while skiing and enjoying the people there and was going to hike part of the PCT this summer until he got this internship. He’s here for the NGO management internship, so he’s helping out with running some office items and generally helping out with all the projects, especially the dry toilet. He’s been out surfing twice a day, which is impressive, and he seems to really love it here! He’s been a great addition to the house.
Joris is Lithuanian and goes to school in London, but spent a semester at UBC in Vancouver recently, so we’ve connected over our experiences in the Pacific Northwest. He’s here for renewable energy projects and he’s been splitting his time between helping me with the solar distiller and helping Ale with his wind turbine project. However, Joris got really sick right after getting here, so he hasn’t been able to do much the past few days, but he’s back on his feet today! He’s a very upbeat and energetic person, and definitely a fun addition to the house as well.
Michael, the fourth director, also arrived this weekend and he’s been really fun to have in the house! Michael definitely doesn’t know Lobitos quite as well as Andres and the others, but he’s just as enthusiastic and energetic about the projects as the other directors. His main job in EcoSwell is to work with the volunteers and help them prepare for life at the EcoHouse, so he’s been talking to us all individually about what we’re working on and how we think the EcoSwell house and the application/volunteer preparation process could be improved. He’s really upbeat and loves to talk about the projects and EcoSwell, so he’s been another great addition to the house.
Other than the new volunteers, we did the classic Sunday dinner at Tranqui’s, I had a nice happy hour sunset and beer with Andres, Joris, and Isa at La Casona (the hostel up the hill) on Monday, and then Isa and I made veggie lasagna for the whole house. On Tuesday we had a ton of black beans left over from lunch, so we made black bean and sweet potato veggie burgers that were DELICIOUS (everyone agreed, even the guys that are usually against veggie burgers)! On Wednesday I went and did a beach workout while the guys surfed (we don’t have enough boards for everyone to surf at once) and then dove in the waves with no wetsuit (the water here is much warmer than at home, but the guys were impressed that I didn’t freeze). I finished Lord of the Rings after almost a year, finished another book called The Letter, and started reading The Stand by Stephen King (another big undertaking, but really good so far)! Yesterday we had a fun EcoTeam dinner at 420 Cafe, where we watched some surfer kids play an exciting game of tag around the tables!
Work
Tumblr media
Me with my solar distiller!
We had our weekly Wednesday planting day at 6am again, and Isa and I spent the time cleaning our little courtyard (it was really messy and there were a lot of random remnants of old projects laying around) and attempting to remove a stump in the middle of the courtyard (we failed). The rest of the team worked at clearing branches and setting up a little vegetable garden that we’re going to start next week!
I’ve been making steady progress on the solar distiller this week; I finished painting all the silicone and primer on both the distiller basin and its window, I painted the water catch with silicone as well and secured it into place, and I figured out the outlet system for the freshwater. I also stopped by the Fisherman’s Guild a couple times to figure out the best place to put the distiller when it’s ready to be installed there. There are a few shadows that I’ve needed to track, but I think I have a good idea of where to put it!
I’ve been posting on SteemIt pretty regularly, but I’ve been slacking on facebook a bit, so look for a bunch EcoSwell posts on facebook in the next week or two! I’m also gaining access to the EcoSwell instagram so I can keep that going a little more than it is now. Gotta start taking more cool pictures!
Adventures
Tumblr media
On the El Ñuro pier (I haven’t gone through my GoPro for turtle pics yet..)
Last weekend before Dion and Javi left, Ale and I went on a grand adventure with them to El Ñuro to swim with turtles! We caught the combie to Talara from Lobitos and got a cab in Talara that drove us the hour to El Ñuro! It was very touristy and there were many people trying to sell many things, but there were truly sea turtles EVERYWHERE. I can’t count the number I saw, it was pretty incredible. We paid for a boat tour, and the guide told us some of the history of the area and the turtles before stopping so we could swim with the turtles! They threw some fish guts into the water and we hopped into the (surprisingly warm) water to chill with the sea turtles. They were not shy at all. Turtles would come up behind you and bump into your feet or your back and give you quite a surprise! Dion screamed a few times (haha) and there was a huge family on the boat with us, and the three little girls were screaming and crying most of the time they were in the water because turtles kept touching them and scaring them. I loved it, but I was definitely caught off guard a couple times (one turtle came up and stuck its head in my armpit !!). Overall it was a funny and memorable experience, and we sat down for a late lunch of sweet potatoes, rice, salad, and ceviche for the meat eaters when we got back to the dock. To get back home we had to take mototaxis (motorcycles with a side-by-side passenger rig on the back - a little sketchy) to a bus stop, take the bus to Talara, and catch the combie back to Lobitos. It was a great day!
Also, mom just arrived after a bit of a crazy journey from the Galapagos! She’s here until Tuesday and I get to show her around Lobitos and maybe go on an adventure or two :)
Tumblr media
Post-workout and swim sunset!
It was another great week at EcoSwell, and I can’t believe I only have six left already! Looking forward to spending time with mom this coming week and making some serious progress on the solar distiller :) As always, feel free to ask any question! Miss and love you all!

la + hawaii apr 19
back again at our favorite place! :)
although we didn’t manage to cross all of the to do’s off of our lists, this turned out to be one of the best trips we’ve ever had. when it’s just alan and me on a trip, we tend to take the easy route. :P we play it safe and after exploring the city we chill out at the hotel room and milk it for what it’s worth hahaha.
soooo...alan and i had a night alone in LA before ada arrived. our first dinner was at a restaurant called sage plant-based bistro. i can’t remember which location we visited, but the cauliflower wings were BOMB af. also delicious were the avocado jackfruit carnitas and the baked eggplant farmesan. (see video for foodie pics)
the next day, we met up right at this restaurant called met her at a bar. it wasn’t a vegan restaurant although they offered many healthy plant-based options. we got buffalo cauliflower wings again, salads, burgers and french toast and waffles. (see video for pics again!)
Tumblr media
this time round, we made our way up to the japanese garden up in van nuy. i was expecting it to be much bigger, it takes you about 20-30 minutes to walk around the entire park. it was stunning, although you can also catch a view of the sewage factory next door.
Tumblr media
it was quite a relaxing visit anyway. :)
Tumblr media
of course i had to make a pit stop at sip matcha to support the youtubers i’d been watching since high school! a bit too sweet for my taste, but i’d also forgotten to ask them to take it easy on the sugar levels, so that’s my bad. it was delicious regardless!
ada had been raving about this salad place called sweetgreen for years now, so of course we ended up ordering seamless that night! the pics aren’t that great so i’m leaving them out of this post, but damn that’s some good salad.
another reason why we’d ordered in that night was because we had to head out early the next day to make our flight to big island. so *long story short* we had some misunderstandings and ended up having to fly to big island to transfer to honolulu. i’d been dreading the layover from the moment that we got our tickets issued, and we both ended up hating sitting around in that small outdoor airport for several hours (they had a power outage so the ice cream in the freezer was melting) that we bought one-way tickets immediately from honolulu back to los angeles to secure seats on a direct flight for when we head back a few days later. it was miserable! (yeah i know i’m a spoiled, high maintenance bish lolll)
when we finally landed in honolulu and picked up our rental car, it was about the same time that ada was supposed to land, so we headed back to the hotel together. we stayed at the modern honolulu together. alan and i had stayed there as well when we had visited 2 years ago, and we both loved the deco/aesthetic as it was (like its name suggests) much younger and more modern than the other hotels down the strip. the location was also quite nice because it’s right at the beginning of the strip, so we’re not stuck in the middle of a sea of tourists, but right on the edge of tourist city and local life.
we ordered in that night because we were pooped from traveling all day long, and we just wanted some comfort food and veg out in front of the tv before our big day the next day. what did we have in store for ourselves? WELL, we only had to wake up a tad bit earlier to drive over to the north shore to join a shark dive!!! we joined the one ocean diving team’s free diving expedition. i don’t think our program is really considered free diving, since we had snorkeling gear on, but it sure sounds a hell of a lot cooler than shark snorkeling, so i’m going to call it diving from this point onwards (although, if you look closely in the photo below, you’ll definitely notice that we don’t have diving tanks strapped to us and we’re just using flimsy snorkelling gear and flippers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i was so proud of myself for taking the plunge and diving in right alongside everyone else. the waves were pretty rough, and i’m not familiar with using a snorkel, so it was actually quite confusing to me for a while. i had already warned ada and alan back in hong kong, before we’d even flown over, that there’d be a big chance i’d chicken out of the entire dive altogether.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i ended up staying in water the longest! i almost didn’t want to leave. (i mean, it did take me a while to muster up the guts to even get in at all lol) it was such a thrilling experience, i’m so glad i went through with it.
when we got back to shore, we treated ourselves to smoothie bowls from haleiwa bowls. i’d been wanting to try this place out for ages, but the last time we were in hawaii we didn’t rent a car, so we didn’t want to venture out an hour north of the honolulu on an uber... turned out it was just a couple minutes walk from the shark snorkeling registration area, woohoo!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
we got 3 bowls to share between the 3 of us (obviously more to share between me and ada lollll) we got a hapa bowl (acai/nana/strawbs/blueb smoothie with granola, fresh nanas, coconut flakes and hawaiian honey), a paniolo bowl (nana + pb + dates topped with granola, nanas, strawbs, cacao nibs and hawaiian honey), and also a blue majik spirulina chia pudding. honestly, they were delicious. not sure if it was because everything was hawaiian and fresh, or if it was because i’d seen their bowls on ig so many times before, or maybe we were just starved from all the adrenaline and excitement.
Tumblr media
we went hiking the second day, and as aesthetically pleasing this piña colada combo looks, they tasted pretty bleh. not refreshing or anything..
this was the diamond head lookout trail, although it was paved and quite easy so i’m not really sure at what point these pictures were taken. :p we stopped at a couple spots along the way.
Tumblr media
before we headed off! (we threw away the fruits after the photo :p i know, a waste :( but no one wanted to lug them around on the hike)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
on another day, we rented a jeep and drove up to the ho'omaluhia botanical garden to take some jurassic park themed photos :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
after we scouted out this spot and took a bunch of pictures here, other cars started to line up to make use of the backdrop as well hehehehe
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
we flew back to la to spend the rest of our holiday! for 420, we went to by chloe for vegan fast food (YUM) and then went off to universal studios. i didn’t realize until much much later that alan didn’t want to spend his 420 there, no clue why he didn’t just let us know sooner! i was pretty stoked that i won 2 toys at universal hehe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
our other best friend crystal was also in town, so of course we met up with her and ate more good food :P
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(those are her hands grabbing the truffle pizza! haha)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and that concludes my la/hawaii trip! it was one of the best trips i’d ever been on, hands down! (even though it took me uhhhh 8 months to finally post about it hahahaha)

Mark’s Birthday Request
Hello all,
First and foremost, HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARK!!!  I hope you have a wonderful birthday and spend it doing things you love with people you love. :) (Also, so sorry I couldn’t make any art or anything for ya, I’ve just been insanely busy...sorry!)
Secondly, Mark put up a video today talking about his birthday and how far he’s come in the past five years.  And while it did make me cry, that’s not the reason I’m making this post.  Mark had a request in the last few minutes of the video.  He wanted people to go back and share their favorite videos, the videos or series that made them subscribe, and tell why.  I’m here to fulfill that request for the birthday boy.
The first series that I watched was Slime Rancher, and I’m pretty sure I’ve been watching the channel ever since.  I was laughing within the first minute I laid eyes on him, and I haven’t stopped laughing yet.
Looking back through the channel, starting at the Slime Rancher era, the first video that I find after Slime Rancher that I remember really liking is Anxiety Attack.  Around that time, I was first starting to have problems with my mental health, and when I saw that I was sold on the channel.  Even now I will go back to that video when I’m feeling bad to hear Mark’s kind words, and it still helps.
Ah, another silly one I still like, There’s Poop in My Soup.  I mean, what’s not to love about a game about poop with good music, 420 blaze it jokes, and Mark getting embarrassed by having his window and having his neighbors hear him screaming about poo?  Ah, memories.
Meow and Woof.  Two masterpieces that will forever be remembered.  What else is there to say?
I can’t look back far enough in my history to see which video I watched first - Thank You or Markiplier Reacts to 8 Million Fan Reaction Video.  I just know that those two videos showed me the real Mark - grateful for everything he has, as well as a crying bumbling baby boi.  Also known as human.  Those videos (and the ones after it) have shown me how he can grow and learn and be greater than ever before, but still be able to come back home and be nostalgic and cry a little.  It showed me that Mark was human, just like me.
One of my favorite series is the Reading Your Comments.  I’ll link to the 16th one, though.  I liked the 16th RYC specifically because my reaction was HOLY SHIT MARK WAS A BAND GEEK i know he hated it bUT STILL HOLY SHIT.  I know Mark didn’t enjoy band near as much as I did, but I still really liked hearing that the nerd from my home state was a band kid who performed in Lucas Oil Stadium (*cough* just like DCI finals *cough*).  I just thought it was cool to hear his band story, and I understand that he doesn’t like marching, but I’m glad to hear that he still immensely respects the marching arts.
Two series that haven't been updated in a while that I miss are Markiplier Highlights and Prop Hunt.  I really enjoy both of those, and I hope they come back soon (but it’s okay if they don’t!)!
I also really love the Teamiplier things, like Markiplier Makes and A Date with Markiplier.  I love the work that everyone puts into those videos, and if any of them ever questions if it was worth it, then just know it was worth it for me.
Almost done, I swear!  There are just so many videos that I love, and I want to do right by Mark’s birthday wish haha.
The second to last one I want to mention is Mark’s Respect video.  I wanted to include this because I think his message is so important.  He says it so eloquently, and so wholeheartedly that I couldn’t help but agree.  When I watched that video, it made me realize that I wasn’t being the best person I can be, and I promised myself that I was going to do better.  I’m still working on that, but I’m trying my best.
I want to end this on a happier note, so the last video I’ll link you to is the Try Not to Laugh series (I linked to the #6 one because I can’t wait to see what the punishment is haha).  These videos always make me laugh, and they cheer me up when I’m down.
Now, I know I’ve linked to a lot of videos and said a lot of things, and I’ve probably gone on for too long now, but I just wanted Mark to know that he’s right.  He made it.  He really did.  Five years ago he was in Cincinnati wishing he could be one of the biggest names in YouTube gaming.  Five years later, he is.  He lives in Los Angeles and is one of the biggest names in YouTube itself, let alone YouTube gaming.  He’s save thousands of lives, a lot of which he probably doesn’t even know about.  Like mine.  I won’t go into detail, but I just want Mark to know that he has saved my life, more than once.
All in all, I just want Mark to have a real great birthday and spend the day just as he wants.
Thank you Mark.  You always make me smile.

New Net Worth: $675,681.17 (+$16,000)
What up, what up! Another month, another net worth update! You tracking it diligently yourself over there? Even if you’re keeping it to yourself like a normal person?
I hope so.
I honestly can’t even put into words how impactful it’s been in my own journey over here, so I won’t… Instead, I’ll show you a picture :)
Of course, tracking itself doesn’t grow your money, but what it DOES do is get you thinking and paying attention to it more which is the key to everything.
You have to have your mind right first before you can start taking action! Then once your dreams and values and overall “why” is locked in, you can hit turbocharge on the game plan and ride high on all that motivation…
I thank my lucky stars every day I started paying attention to this stuff over 10 years ago… Which I owe completely to this same financial blogging community here from people sharing their net worth reports too! It all just clicked, and the second I decided to start my own blog I knew that the one thing I’d make sure to do is share my numbers as well no matter how ugly or awesome they were.
And now, 100+ months and net worth reports later, here we are :) So hopefully it sparks something in at least one of you guys as well!
If you ever start doubting, just remember this:
Haha… It’s not always easy or fun – as you can see in my own dips up there, as well as the red marks in today’s update – but so long as you can look at your #’s and see them trending upwards over time you know you’re at least on the right path :)
And then we get to go back to what we truly care about in our worlds – our lives! Money is only a tool, never forget! The real goal here is to not have to think about it one day!
Here’s How September Broke Down…
These updates would probably be pretty boring if I didn’t mess up from time to time, eh? ;)
CASH SAVINGS (-$2,706.98): I made a big goof this month – I forgot about quarterly tax payments! I’ve been so loosey goosey with my cash flow ever since watching my kids part-time that I completely forgot about that whole “tax thing” (as well as other errands that’ve been building up – yikes). I don’t know if you’re allowed to blame your kids for your own stuff, but I’m going to do it anyways since they’re not old enough to call me out on it yet ;) Still, time to get my ass in gear!
THRIFT SAVINGS PLAN (TSP) (+$662.12): Another hefty increase here courtesy of Mrs. BudgetsAreSexy who continues to diligently (and automatically) contribute to her retirement account since taking her gov’t job last year. It’s the best when you do it from Day 1 so you don’t even feel the difference in your pay check each time! Highly recommend!
ROTH IRAs (+$3,751.08): Another plump increase here as well, courtesy of the market… We’ve been hinting for months that it’s all going to come crashing down at some point, but somehow it still has room to grow it looks like… But don’t be fooled, it will happen! So get those game plans and emotions in check! The doomsayers will be flooding the streets!
SEP IRA (+$14,977.09): Same with this area too – nothing new added, just the markets doing their thing. We still have most of our money in Vanguard’s VTSAX fund and plan to for years and years to come. Here’s what that performance has looked like since we moved our money over a few years back:
CAR VALUES (-$1,258.00): A bigger hit than normal because I dropped my car’s “condition” down a notch due to that fire hydrant fight it just had to get into ;) We’ll bump it up again later if we end up getting it fixed and looking shiny again, but for now it is what it is and we keep on moving forward…
Here are the values of both our rides per Kelly Blue Book:
Lexus RX350: $11,539.00
Toyota Corolla: $3,707.00
CAR LOAN: (-$469.52): Slowly going down each month! And a big change from last year’s $19,000 or so it was at when we first picked up the car (Lexus). The goal is to have it paid off within the next year, if not sooner if we come across a nice chunk of change… We just love having the cash padding since most of our income is still tied to my fluctuating blog income here.
And that’s September!
Here’s a zoomed out snapshot of how the past 12 months have gone in our household:
And then, as always, the kids’ net worths… because that’s fun to track too :)
Hope your journey is going well also! And you’re doing a much better job than I am in the cash-flow department! You can find all 100+ of our net worth reports here if you want to drill down into certain months, or click here if you want to see how other bloggers are doing in our industry.
For perspective, I rank #102 out of the 420 net worths we’re currently tracking :) Use it to connect to other bloggers around your same range!
Upward and onward,
FYI: If you’re wondering where Mr 1500’s post is today, we’re actually hitting pause on his column for a bit while he catches up with a few things and re-assesses all his hopes and dreams ;) Apparently early retirement can get even busier than having a 9-5, who knew? We love all his stuff though, so hopefully he’ll be back soon and in the meantime you can catch him over on his own blog at 1500Days.com. Go get’ em, bud!

Week Four: Friends, Family, and Food
Tumblr media
The Capullana caves arch.
**Sorry for the late post, wifi access was minimal this weekend! I wrote most of this on Friday, so just pretend it’s Friday instead of Monday :) **
A month has flown by!! It was fun to see my mom this week and show her around Lobitos. The EcoSwell team made a number of new friends this week, including a couple of new volunteers. We are also now generating clean and drinkable distilled water! It’s been a busy week and there is lots to tell :)
The EcoHouse
Tumblr media
Our homemade vegan fruit crumble!! It was delicious :)
We have a couple of new people in the EcoHouse!! Jenny arrived on Tuesday afternoon, and she seems great! She is going into her final year at Humboldt State in energy resources engineering (a major I almost did too) and is from the bay area. It’s been really fun to have another girl in the house; she’s very outgoing and fun to talk to! Jenny is helping Joris and I with the solar distiller, so we’re hopefully going to make a lot of progress in the next few weeks!
Jack arrived yesterday (Thursday). He’s from London and just finished his first year at uni studying geography (with a Spanish component). I haven’t had much of a chance to talk to him yet, but he seems really friendly and eager to help out. He’s here for NGO management, so he’ll be able to help me out with social media (yay!). With Jack we have seven volunteers and we only have room in the house for six, so he’s staying at Nacho’s hostel until Isa leaves next Friday.
Other than our newbies, we’ve had a crazy good food week. During this week’s Talara trip, the guys that went bought a lot less food than normal, which I think has upped our creativity and thus upped the awesomeness of our home-cooked meals. We had Taco Tuesday (as always), but we didn’t have tortillas, so we whipped up some homemade tortillas that were pretty amazing!! Wednesday was veggie burger night again and we cooked up some amazing veggie burgers using our now tried and trusted recipe (minimalist baker’s sweet potato black bean burgers). We also made a strawberry, nectarine, and papaya crumble that hit the spot for dessert! Thursday night we went out to Tranqui’s because Jack had just arrived and Jenny hadn’t been there yet, but he was out of his yummy plantains and french fries :( Luckily, though, Isa and Jenny and I had made two AMAZING vegan carrot cakes earlier in the day (we had a bunch of carrots we needed to get rid of) and everybody chowed down on them both Thursday night and this morning. And tonight we have a vegan pot pie in the oven that looks delicious and I can’t wait to eat!!
We also watched a couple of cool movies this week, one was called Rushmore, a Wes Anderson film about a guy who wants to stay at his prep school forever, and Ex Machina, which I hadn’t seen before and was a little crazy but pretty well done, I thought.
There also was a pisco party one evening, and four of our new friends (two pairs of van-life couples staying at La Casona from Germany and Austria) joined us and learned about what we do at EcoSwell (they were very into it)!
Work
Tumblr media
Joris, Jenny, and I with our working distiller!
The distiller is officially up and running! It still needs quite a few improvements, but it can produce very pure distilled water. Right now we’re getting about three liters a day, but we think we can increase that quite a bit by making it more air-tight and making some other changes. We have spent quite a bit of time filtering seawater to get macro organisms out of the water (you don’t want stuff dying in the distiller and stinking up the water) and the distiller can take about 50 liters at a time, which it distills over about five days (right now). We’re on the way to making a really effective and sustainable source of clean drinking water for Lobitos!
Planting day was really fun this week, we had both of our new van life couples come help out, so we got a lot done pretty fast Wednesday morning! I helped germinate some oregano and cilantro and then mixed and poured dirt for the veggie garden/orchard. We also planted a bunch of vetiver (bug and odor repellant grass) on the path to the dry toilet. We took some group pictures and gave the van lifers EcoSwell shirts as thanks for their help! Then we made our classic big planting day breakfast and got working on the projects again.
On Friday, a few of us went in to Talara to look for materials for our projects (Jenny and I got some items that will improve the distiller), and I got to experience ProMart (the weirdly similar Peruvian version of Home Depot) and Plazavea, the grocery store. We went to lunch at Black Pepe, a local restaurant run out of a man’s living room, and had a delicious salad (I also tried a bite of a yummy classic seafood dish called mariscos) before heading home with our new materials.
Adventures
Tumblr media
Mom and I at the Capullana caves!
This weekend was really fun because my mom was here from Friday to Tuesday and we got to go on some adventures and I got to show her around Lobitos! She arrived early Friday morning and knocked on the door just as I was leaving for a run. If you want to hear her wild travel story check out her facebook! Anyway, she made it after an exhausting night and crashed in my bed while she waited for the hostel to open. She moved into her room at lunch time and after work I went up to La Casona (the hostel up the hill where she stayed) and had a nice happy hour with her on the deck as we watched the sun set. She had already made friends with one of the van life couples (from Germany) and was talking up a storm in classic mom fashion. After sunset we decided to walk the beach down to a restaurant she had been recommended by some surfers, El Cuartel. It had amazing veggie burgers and sweet potato fries, along with quinoa and potato salads! After dinner we headed home and decided to watch The Martian with everyone, which ended up going until midnight and Mom found out that she had been locked out of her hostel. So, she came and slept in my twin-size bottom bunk bed with me and kept me up half the night with her snoring (haha..).
On Saturday we decided to head to Mancora (a touristy party town an hour and a half north) for the day as a little mother-daughter adventure. While we were waiting for the combie to take us to Talara from Lobitos, we met the other van-life couple (from Austria) and talked to them for a while as we all looked for a combie that would fit us. (We happened to meet both van-life couples at different times than the EcoSwell directors, but they both became friends with all of us! Funny how we all ran into each other one way or another.) Anyway, Mom and I successfully made it to Talara and then into a van going to Mancora, and as soon as we got to Mancora we walked the beach and wandered the vendor stalls (super touristy) and then had a yummy lunch at the Black Sheep, which had amazing vegan burgers and juices. We spent the next few hours hanging out on the beach reading, napping, and watching horses give people rides and rented ATVs zooming down the beach. After we had enjoyed the atmosphere for a while we went and had happy hour at one of the nearby restaurants, and I tried a Bolivian drink that mom had in Ecuador and mom tried a maracuya (passionfruit) sour. We wandered our way to the bus station and hopped on the Expo bus back to Talara with a French surfer dude we met in the bus station who was also headed to Lobitos. We made it into Talara after dark and barely caught the last Lobitos combie of the night, which we packed with sixteen people, a spare tire, a few bags of groceries, and a surfboard. It was a wild ride! We cooked up some pasta back at the EcoHouse, and that was the same night of the pisco party with the van-lifers that we’d met! Mom made it back before the hostel locked up, so I got my bed to myself again :)
Sunday morning I attempted to do laundry and mostly flooded the kitchen, but after a few hours my clothes were clean and the kitchen was once again dry. Mom and I went to the rocks at La Punta and tanned, read, and watched the surfers ride the big waves. We headed to lunch at Cora, a restaurant I’d heard a lot about but hadn’t yet been to, and had a yummy veggie stir fry while mom tried the fresh fish. That evening, Henry (our local surfer friend) offered to take us all to the Capullana caves up the coast a bit. A bunch of us hopped in his and his brother’s mototaxis with Henry’s two dogs and drove the dirt road to scramble around some cliffs and caves and watch the sunset. It was really beautiful, and climbing down and up the ropes was exciting! We saw little red crabs everywhere and a bunch of blue-footed boobies (famous birds that Darwin studied) that mom hadn’t even seen in the Galapagos. The caves were an incredible adventure, and I’m really glad mom was there to experience them too! We got home after dark and headed to Tranqui’s for our classic Sunday dinner.
On Monday after work, I went up to La Casona for happy hour and sunset with mom again, and the EcoTeam joined us a bit later! Mom challenged Andres, one of the directors, to a game of digital backgammon on her phone (he won but she was in the lead for most of the game) and we all headed to 420 for dinner after, where we had some yummy pizza and pasta and piña coladas for mom’s last night :)
Mom stopped by for lunch on Tuesday before she left for the airport, and I said goodbye and wished her good luck with the rest of her travels (from what I’ve heard it sounds like they’ve been going well!) and sent her off to the Talara airport with Julio, our neighbor.
There weren’t many adventures the rest of the week, but on Thursday night at Tranqui’s we made friends with a drunk British guy who was cycling South America, and he called us EcoWarriors, so that was fun!
Tumblr media
One of the fishing boats (still in use!) on the beach.
This was a great week; it was really fun to see mom and hear her stories of her travels alone in Latin America, which I’m really impressed with (especially because she doesn’t speak any Spanish) and I’m glad I got out to see more of this area of Peru! The cooking this week was really fun, I definitely want to eat in and cook more. I can’t believe I’ve been here a month already; only five more weeks until I head south to Patagonia! Stay tuned for more fun stories and adventures (I had a bit of a wild weekend, details will be included in the next post)!

Are you interested in getting a chemical peel but aren’t sure what to expect? This post is sharing everything you need to know before and after a chemical peel…plus photos of my face throughout the peeling process. (All of these photos are taken without makeup – to give you the best idea of what my skin looks like.)
What is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is when a chemical solution is applied to your skin that causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. The new, regenerated skin is usually smoother and far healthier looking than the old skin. It’s used to help treat acne, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, etc.
It’s worth noting that many aestheticians recommend you get more than one chemical peel to achieve optimal results. Some places will sell them in sets of 3 for this reason. (This is what I used to do.) The condition my skin is currently in, it was recommended I receive 2 within a 1-month timespan (which I did.)
Before I jump into the whole chemical peel process, I want to briefly explain my background with chemical peels, and the issues I have had with my skin over the years. If you would rather just learn about the chemical peel, scroll to the “what to expect when getting a chemical peel” section.
Why I Started Getting Chemical Peels & Why I Stopped
I used to get chemical peels on a fairly regular basis 7+ years ago. My skin at this time was in rough shape. I was dealing with cystic acne, hyperpigmentation, blackheads and whiteheads. I was doing everything I could to try to stop the acne I had.
Chemical peels were helping my skin the most out of anything I had tried previously. The amount of acne on my face was decreasing as was my scarring.
Eventually, I stopped doing chemical peels because it was getting too expensive to continue getting them at the frequency I needed to maintain my problematic skin. Plus, I absolutely HATED the downtime that came after a chemical peel. My skin would look absolutely terrifying for a week after I had one. (And I was working with elementary school kids at the time, who have millions of questions about why my face looked weird for a few days, haha.)
I then went to my dermatologist for help. He prescribed taking a combination of doxycycline (oral antibiotic) and clindamycin (a topical cream). He also helped me figure out some foods that were triggering breakouts (it’s mainly junk foods, especially refined sugars). I modified my diet and used these prescriptions for over a year before my acne subsided.
My skin without makeup before I received my 1st chemical peel in 7+ years.
Why I’m Getting Chemical Peels Again
My skin is a thousand times healthier now than it was over 7 years ago, but it’s far from perfect. I do still get hormonal breakouts, tons of blackheads and also milia. I also have a little leftover acne scarring.
Now seemed like the best time ever to get a chemical peel again! This is because I’m hardly leaving my house and when I do, more than half my face is covered in a mask. So, if I’m going to deal with the downtime that comes with a chemical peel – this is is the perfect time to do it!
Photo of where my chemical peel took place at Ahava Salon in Appleton, Wisconsin.
I scheduled my chemical peels at the salon I have been going to since I moved back home last fall – Ahava Salon & Spa in Appleton, Wisconsin. I’ve been going to them for all my hair and beauty treatments for the last year. (They do a great job!) I did their PCA chemical peels.
What to Expect When Getting a Chemical Peel
The peel itself isn’t all that bad and takes less than an hour to complete, typically. You’ll discuss your skin conditions with your aesthetician, fill out some forms and then get comfortable.
Your aesthetician will cleanse your face and then apply the first layer of the treatment and allow it to sit. They’ll ask you if you’re feeling any pain. (I only felt a slight tingling at this stage.)
Then, they will likely apply one more layer. This will likely feel more tingly than the previous application.
Depending on how your skin is feeling and reacting, they may apply one more layer. (I have never had more than 3 layers of treatment applied at one time, as my skin gets quite irritated by the third application.)
Then, some moisturizer and sunscreen will be applied.
My aesthetician recommended purchasing the Post-Procedure Solution Kit by PCA Skin to use for my at-home treatment. I am REALLY happy she suggested this. The kit did a great job of helping my skin heal quicker. It also helped with some of the discomfort of having dry/peeling/itchy skin for a few days (more on that in a second).
Plus, I could reapply the creams throughout the day when my skin started to feel dry & tight, and it never got too oily or icky looking. (I remember in the past I would apply my normal moisturizer throughout the day and my skin would be an oily disaster by the end of the day.)
Click here for more info on this post-chemical peel kit. These are not full-sized bottles, FYI.
I used this PCA kit + Annmarie Rosemary Toning Mist throughout the 7 day recovery period. (I just like the way that toner makes my skin feel!)

The Actual “Peeling” Process + Photos
I’m sure what everyone is most concerned about, though, is just how much your skin is going to peel after this treatment. Bad news, folks… it’s likely going peel A LOT. For me, it usually takes until day 3 before my skin gets scary looking. The whole process takes about 7 days.
Day 1: Immediately After the Chemical Peel
#gallery-0-26 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-26 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-26 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-26 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
My husband described this as the day it looked like I scrubbed my face raw, haha. My skin was a bit shiny and looked like I had indeed scrubbed it too hard, as my cheeks were raw and rosy looking. My skin felt a little tight, but nothing too terrible.
Day 2: The First Full Day After My Chemical Peel
#gallery-0-27 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-27 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-27 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-27 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
I’m not experiencing any peeling on day 2. My skin feels a little tight and dry (sort of like a mild sunburn).
Day 3: The Peeling Begins!
I’m beginning to notice some patches of skin that are peeling. My skin is dry and itchy and looks a little weird when I put makeup on. (The lines under my eyes are actually my skin starting to dry and flake – it looks really weird!)
Day 4: The Worst Day of Peeling
#gallery-0-28 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-28 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-28 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-28 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
This is my least favorite day of the whole process. My skin looks terrifying! It’s peeling like crazy and very dry/itchy feeling. Blech! The photo below is one my husband snapped in the car later that day, it looked so much worse than the photos above, so I wanted to share it as well to prepare you for the level of peeling you may experience!
Fortunately, my skin only looked this terrifying for one day!
Day 5 & 6: Peeling Begins to Taper Off
Different sections of my face are peeling slightly and feel a little itchy (identical to day 3’s photos).
Day 7: No More Peeling & Brighter Skin!
#gallery-0-29 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-29 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-29 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-29 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
My skin looks a lot brighter and clearer! It’s not absolutely “perfect” by any means, though. I also developed a new zit on my chin after the treatment (which is not uncommon to happen).
I am happy with how much brighter and clearer my skin looks!
Before and after 1 chemical peel.
Chemical Peel Round 2
As I mentioned earlier in this post, chemical peels are best done more than once. You’ll see results after getting just one, don’t get me wrong, but for most skin issues, one time isn’t going to cut it.
#gallery-0-30 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-30 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-30 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-30 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
My aesthetician recommended I come back within 2 weeks for one more chemical peel. This time, my aesthetician was able to perform more extractions (which is where they dig out all the lovely zits, blackheads and milia on my face). This is because all the debris and dead skin on my face was nice and loosened up after that chemical peel.
Otherwise, the process was identical. I was hoping my skin would peel less during the week, but it still peeled like crazy on round 2! However, I like how much smoother my skin is – far fewer milia and blackheads. (So, it was worth it for me.)
Results after the second chemical peel.
Final Thoughts on Chemical Peels
In my experience, chemical peels are not a “silver bullet.” Meaning, they didn’t cure all of the many issues I have with my skin. This only happened when I was put on medications by my dermatologist.
However, they are fantastic for brightening skin and for correcting some minor skin conditions. I am really happy with my current results! (Shoutout to Ahava Salon and Spa for doing an amazing job!)
I still don’t love the recovery time associated with chemical peels, but the results are worth it. They’re far more noticeable, in my experience than getting a facial.
Final results after 2 chemical peels.
Products I Use on a Daily Basis
After I use the PCA Kit for 7 days, I switch back to using a combination of skincare products to deal with my combination and acne-prone skin.
The skincare products I use on a daily basis:
Citrus Mint Cleanser
Rosemary Toning Mist
Herbal Facial Oil for Normal & Combination Skin
AHA/BHA Acne Clearing Gel
Weightless Protection PCA Sunscreen
Facial Scrub (Typically only use this once or twice a week now.)
I am also happy to answer any questions you might have about getting a chemical peel or my skin in the comments section at the end of the post!

If you’re searching for the best travel dresses that are wrinkle-resistant, versatile, comfortable, stylish, have pockets and are great quality – this is the post for you! Plus, these are dresses that are being tested and worn by an actual traveler on adventures (me – the voice behind “Have Clothes, Will Travel“!)…and not just a random roundup featuring product photos from a mysterious writer.
Some of the dresses in the post I’ve had for years and have worn on adventures ranging from sightseeing in Russia to lounging on the beach in Jamaica to riding camels in Egypt. Some are more recent finds and were just tested on my adventure through Brazil this last month. (I just returned from that yesterday!)
I will be briefly reviewing and answering each question below for the dresses/brands featured in this post, as these are what I look for when buying a dress for traveling.
Is it wrinkle-resistant?
Is it versatile?
It is comfortable (breathable)?
Which season(s) does it work for?
Does it have pockets?
How good of quality is it?
Is it machine-washable?
The brands that are featured in this post are:
Karina Dresses
Anatomie
SCOTTeVest
United by Blue
XCVI
Milumia
Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions about the travel dresses featured in this post in the comments section at the end. Enjoy!

The Best Travel Dresses for Every Season and Trip
Karina Dresses – ALL of Their Dress Styles!
Note: this one isn’t for a particular style of dress as ALL of the dresses made by Karina Dresses work well for traveling. (I currently own 5 of their dresses in different styles.)
Is it wrinkle-resistant?
Yes! All the dresses made by Karina Dresses are wrinkle-resistant and packable!
Is it versatile?
Yes, I have worn my Karina Dresses for every type of event under the sun.
It is comfortable (breathable)?
YES. These dresses are SO comfortable and breathable.
Which season(s) does it work for?
Every season! I’ll show photos below, but these dresses work from winter-summer no problem! Just pair with tights or a cardigan in winter and you’re good to go (pictured below).
Does it have pockets?
Some of their dress styles do have pockets, but not all of them do. You can click here to shop their dresses that DO have pockets.
How good of quality is the dress?
All of the dresses I have from Karina Dresses are incredible quality. The one in the photo above in Russia I’ve worn and washed at least 30 times and it still looks like new. They are also all made in the USA!
Is it machine-washable?
Yes! All Karina Dresses are machine-washable.
Karina Dresses are my go-to for travel dresses. They check every box that I look for in a travel dress. I also love that they are a small, US-based company that is committed to creating quality dresses in sizes that range from XXS-4X. All of the dresses above are from Karina Dresses. I also wrote an in-depth review of Karina Dresses – if you’re interested, click here to read it.

Anatomie – Travel Marine Winkle-Free Wrap Dress
Is it wrinkle-resistant?
Yes! This dress is 100% wrinkle-resistant.
Is it versatile?
Yes! I’ve worn this Anatomie dress for a day of sightseeing through Rio de Janeiro to dinner at a fancy steak house in the city.
It is comfortable (breathable)?
Yes, it’s very comfortable and breathable. The humidity in Rio was insane (I mean, check out my hair! Haha.) and I was still comfortable wearing this dress.
Which season(s) does it work for?
While I’ve only worn this dress in spring and summer so far – there’s no reason you couldn’t pair this dress with boots and tights for winter. I’ll test it out in some chillier weather when I head to Ireland in a couples weeks!
Does it have pockets?
Unfortunately, no. That is the only thing I don’t like about this dress.
How good of quality is it?
FANTASTIC. I think this dress is the highest quality dress on this entire list.
Is it machine-washable?
Yep!
Wearing my Anatomie travel dress out a fancy, schmancy dinner
Anatomie is a brand that specifically makes high-quality, luxury travel clothing for women. This is my only dress from Anatomie at this time, but that is going to have to change! I LOVE how stylish and classy this dress is. It’s super flattering and would work on just about any body type too. It also comes in red and navy.
Click here to shop the travel marine wrinkle-free wrap dress from Anatomie.
(Pro tip: be sure to wash this Anatomie travel dress before wearing it. I literally took it out of the package and threw it in my suitcase the first time I wore it… and it ended up bleeding on the light-colored bra I was wearing. However, I wore it in some really humid and sticky conditions, and also was caught in a couple of rainstorms. Still, it’s better to just be safe than sorry – just wash it first!)
United by Blue – Ridley Long Sleeve Swing Dress
Is it wrinkle-resistant?
Sort of. I wouldn’t say this dress is 100% wrinkle-resistant. However, I didn’t iron it before wearing it in the photos featured here (but you can see some wrinkles). I did not wash this dress or pack it in any special way, though.
Is it versatile?
Not exactly. This dress works great as a casual clothing item. But you’re not likely going to be wearing it to the office or a fancy dinner.
It is comfortable (breathable)?
Yes! It is so soft and comfortable. It feels like being wrapped in my favorite blanket snuggled on the couch.
Which season(s) does it work for?
Spring, early summer, fall and winter. This dress from United by Blue is one of the thickest dresses on this list. So, I think it works great in chillier weather with layers. It’s not so thick, though, that it can’t be worn in warm weather either. (I wore it as a swimsuit coverup above in 75-degree weather.)
Does it have pockets?
Yep!
How good of quality is it?
It’s fantastic quality, and it’s also made from sustainable materials.
Is it machine-washable?
Yep.
United by Blue is a clothing company committed to making the world a better place. For every product you purchase from United by Blue – they remove one pound of trash from the ocean. Plus, their clothing is high-quality and made from sustainable materials. Their Ridley dress is perfect for a beach vacation or if you’re embarking on a camping trip. I’m also bringing this dress along for St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin this year. I think it will be perfect with leggings and boots for the celebrations!
Click here to shop the Ridley long sleeve swing dress by United by Blue.
SCOTTeVEST – Dorothy Dress
Is it wrinkle-resistant?
Sort of. I wouldn’t say this dress is 100% wrinkle-resistant. However, I didn’t iron it before wearing it in the photos featured here (but you can see some wrinkles). I did wash this dress before wearing it, though. (There were some deep wrinkles from the packaging.)
Is it versatile?
Yes, with the right accessories – I’ve worn this SCOTTeVEST dress from sightseeing to dinner and even as a swimsuit coverup.
It is comfortable (breathable)?
VERY. This is the most comfortable and breathable dress in this entire post.
Which season(s) does it work for?
Spring, summer and early fall. This dress is pretty lightweight, even with layering, I think it would get a little chilly in the dead of winter.
Does it have pockets?
Yes – and they’re the best pockets on this list too! They actually zip, so your belongings stay safe AND dry. I was caught in a crazy rainstorm by Christ the Redeemer (in Brazil) while wearing this dress and my passport and phone were both fine and dry in my pockets!
How good of quality is it?
Amazing! This dress is really well-made and the design is incredibly well-thought-out for a traveler.
Is it machine-washable?
Yes. It also drys SUPER fast, so if you’re caught in a rainstorm or want to wash it in a hotel sink… this dress will be dry in couple hours.
What it looks like without a belt.
SCOTTeVest is best known for their revolutionary travel eVEST that has a pocket for just about everything! However, they also make many other clothing items, such as this lovely Dorothy dress that features 4 pockets and is loose-fitting and stylish to boot. I was seriously blown away by how comfortable this dress is – and how quickly it dried after I was drenched in a storm. (I didn’t even change for dinner that night!) The pockets are also the best-designed pockets in this entire post (they kept my passport, phone and credit card safe and dry). And while being loose-fitting is super comfortable, I do prefer this dress paired with a belt (just my personal preference). You can also get a slightly more fitted look if you size down a size when ordering.
Click here to shop the Dorothy dress by SCOTTeVest.
XCVI – Bran Dress
Is it wrinkle-resistant?
No. This dress will require a good steaming before you wear it.
Is it versatile?
Not exactly. I don’t think this dress will work for an office or a fancy dinner. It’s great to wear exploring or for more casual events.
It is comfortable (breathable)?
Yes. This dress is very comfortable and breathable.
Which season(s) does it work for?
Spring, fall and winter. I don’t love wearing this dress in super hot weather.
Does it have pockets?
Yes! And they’re huge!
How good of quality is the dress?
This dress is really good quality and is a really interesting design.
Is it machine-washable?
Yes!
XCVI is a brand that prides itself on being “fashion you can live in.” I am a huge fan of their leggings for traveling and also like this particular dress for the right travel adventure because it is comfortable, has such deep pockets and hides the dirt well! I think it would be great to wear for a safari type vacation or any sort of outdoorsy trip. (I also wrote an extensive review of XCVI clothing – you can click here to read it.)
Click here to shop the Bran dress by XCVI.
Milumia – Boho Split Tie-Waist Maxi Dress
Is it wrinkle-resistant?
No. This dress will need to be ironed.
Is it versatile?
Yes! I’ve worn this dress from Milumia for everything from running errands to riding camels in Egypt and also for nights out at nicer restaurants.
It is comfortable (breathable)?
Yes, it’s very comfortable and breathable. It’s a very lightweight material.
Which season(s) does it work for?
Summer and spring and fall. This dress is great for hot weather but works in cooler weather when paired with a jacket, scarf and boots.
Does it have pockets?
Yes!
How good of quality is it?
It’s OK quality. I’ve worn and washed this dress around a dozen times now and some threading is coming undone (easy enough fix). But I don’t foresee this dress lasting as long as the other ones listed in this post.
Is it machine-washable?
Yep!
This dress works for camel riding too!
Milumia is a fast-fashion clothing company that makes boho dresses for very affordable prices. You’ll find them on websites such as Shein or Amazon. I like these dresses for traveling in warmer climates as they are super comfortable and affordable. I actually own a total of three of these short-sleeved Milumia maxi dresses, just in different prints. I had purchased them all for my trip to Egypt last year.
Click here to shop to shop the boho split tie-waist maxi dress by Milumia.
Milumia – Button-Up Split Floral Print Maxi Dress
I also wanted to include this dress by Milumia because I get SO much use out of it. I’ve had it for years and have worn it from adventures in Argentina, Turkey, Egypt, Russia and more. All of the points are the same for this Milumia dress as the one above (so, I’m not going to repeat them), except that this dress seems to be far better quality. I’ve had it for around 4 years now and still looks like new. It also does NOT have pockets, unfortunately.
Click here to shop this button-up split floral print maxi dress by Milumia.
Just a note for regular readers too – I know there are some travel dresses that I have been praising for years in my posts, but they aren’t featured on this list. That is because, unfortunately, they are no longer available. I’m only linking to dresses in this post that are fully stocked. If they do get restocked – I’ll be sure to add them to this post! I’ll also be adding more amazing travel dresses to this list as I come across them.
What are some of your favorite dresses for traveling? Let me know in the comments!
*Some of the dresses in this post were gifted to me for past collaborations. However, this blog post is NOT sponsored by any company. I wrote it because I wanted to share my favorite travel dresses with fellow explorers… and there really seems to be a lack of posts like this on Google that actually show the dresses in action!
