HOW MUCH SPACE JUNK IS THERE??
Blog#322
Saturday, August 12th, 2023
Welcome back,
The United States Space Surveillance Network currently tracks more than 23,000 pieces of space junk that are larger than a softball. This includes about 3,000 defunct satellites that have been left to decay in orbit, according to the Natural History Museum of London.
Tumblr media
However, most pieces of orbital debris are far too small to be tracked. Researchers estimate that there are more than 100 trillion untracked pieces of space junk in Earth orbit, according to the Science study. The vast majority of this untracked debris is likely less than 0.4 inches (1 centimeter) wide, according to the European Space Agency (ESA).
Even tiny pieces of space junk can cause incredible damage. That's because objects in orbit move incredibly quickly, typically reaching speeds of greater than 15,600 mph (25,200 km/h), or 10 times the speed of an average bullet shot on Earth.
Tumblr media
If two objects moving in opposite directions collide with one another in space, then the impact becomes even greater.
This means that even pea-size objects can become dangerous missiles in orbit. This was illustrated in 2016, when a small paint fleck collided with a window on the International Space Station, gouging a quarter-inch dent into the glass. (Fortunately, the window held).
Tumblr media
Yes, space junk frequently falls to Earth. On average, anywhere from 200 to 400 pieces of tracked space debris plummet through Earth's atmosphere every year, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Most of this free-falling junk is small enough that it burns up entirely in the atmosphere, never reaching the ground. Larger objects that can survive the fall (like satellites) typically splash down into the ocean, but not always.
Tumblr media
In August 2022, a charred, spike-like chunk of a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft fell through the atmosphere and landed on a sheep farm in Australia.
On Feb. 10, 2009, a defunct Russian spacecraft crashed into a functioning U.S. Iridium commercial spacecraft, destroying both and adding more than 2,300 pieces of trackable space junk to orbit, according to NASA.
In March 2021, a piece of a Russian rocket collided with and destroyed a functioning Chinese military satellite.
Tumblr media
In June 2021, a small piece of unidentified space junk slammed into the International Space Station's robotic arm, damaging but not destroying it.
Incidents are occuring more frequently as more space junk is added to orbit each year.

When Walder St. Louis entered the Miami pawnshop in October 2021, his shopping list contained just a few items: Two AK-47s and an AR-15. Germine Joly, then head of the Haitian gang 400 Mawozo, had placed the order from a Port-au-Prince prison. St. Louis would soon send two barrels of firearms back to the Haitian capital. Heavily armed gangs control 80 percent of Port-au-Prince, the United Nations has estimated, where they rape, kidnap and kill with impunity. Haiti doesn’t manufacture firearms, and the U.N. prohibits importing them, but that’s no problem for the criminals. When they go shopping, the United States is their gun store. The semiautomatic rifles that have wrought human carnage from an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., to a Walmart in El Paso are also being used to menace the Haitian government and terrorize the population. U.S. authorities seized some of the guns in the 400 Mawozo plot before they could be smuggled, and Joly, St. Louis and two others pleaded guilty to federal gunrunning conspiracy charges. The gang would soon gain notoriety for kidnapping 17 American and Canadian missionaries. Other firearms, purchased in part with ransom money, slipped into Haiti undetected. That’s the most common outcome, analysts say, owing to access in the United States, corruption in Haiti and insufficient screening in both countries. William O’Neill, the U.N.’s independent expert on human rights in Haiti, called conditions here “cataclysmic.” The presidency is vacant; the prime minister has announced his intention to resign; the National Assembly has gone home. Security forces are outgunned by criminals, who have grown in power since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. O’Neill said last week it was “incredible” that “weapons and bullets are still going to the gangs, mostly from the United States.”
Sometimes see claims "This isn't colonization/imperialism because there's no attempt to control the territory" and yeah a need for suspicion there.

Hey everyone ! So i solved this nonexistent mystery by biting the bullet and searching twitter with "george all boys school" and lo and behold! Here's a tweet referencing it from march 2021 with 400 likes and from an account with 60k followers that has follows from both of Antfrost's accounts, indicating they very clearly are Not a freak. So fuck off and die all of you and maybe when you stop viewing everything with the worst faith possible you will stop being so miserable.

A 12-member jury convicted defendant Jennifer Crumbley of manslaughter that day. Prosecutors accused her of failing to properly keep her guns and failing to provide assistance to her son, who was suffering from psychological problems.
On November 30, 2021, then 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley shot and killed four classmates, wounding six classmates and a teacher at Oxfordtown Middle School near Detroit, Michigan. He pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder in 2022 and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The pistol Ethan used was a gift from his father, James Clumbley, four days before the crime. The day after Ethan gets his pistol, Jennifer takes him to a shooting range to practice shooting.
On the morning of the incident, prosecutors said, teachers found "disturbing" drawings and words in Ethan's math workbook. Ethan, who drew guns, bullets and a bleeding man, wrote, "These thoughts can't be stopped. Help me. The world is dead. My life has no meaning. ”
The school called Ethan's parents to the school and asked them to provide him with psychological counseling and take him home. But Ethan's parents refused to take him home.
Later, Ethan pulls a gun out of his bag and shoots at the teacher and classmates.
The school said that if the Crumbleys had told Ethan that he had been given a gun, they would never have kept Ethan at the school.
Ethan once wrote in his diary that his parents ignored his pleas for help. "I have no help with my psychological problems at all. This makes me want to shoot at the school. ”
Prosecutor Karen McDonald told the jury at trial that Jennifer was indifferent to the child's condition and did not take the necessary precautions. "She should have locked up the gun and bullets, she should have told the school that they gave him a gun as a gift, she should have told the school that her son was in a crisis and was asking for help. ”
Jennifer's defense attorney stressed that Jennifer could not have predicted her son's actions and that the parents should not be held responsible for anything the child did.
Ethan's father, James, has also been charged with manslaughter, and the trial is scheduled to begin on March 5.
The United States is flooded with guns, with a total population of about 330 million, and more than 400 million civilian guns. Last year, there were more than 650 mass shootings in the United States that killed or injured at least four people other than the gunman, according to the Gun Violence Archive website.
School shootings of all kinds are also common in the United States. U.S. government data shows that about three-quarters of the guns used by gunmen in recent school shootings came from their homes.
Speaking after the jury announced the verdict, the father of one of the students killed in the Oxfordtown secondary school shooting said: "This verdict will reverberate in every family in this country." ”
Josh Horwitz, director of the Center for Gun Violence Solutions at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, told Reuters: "The jury understands that in today's United States, buying a gun for a mentally unstable teenager is grossly irresponsible and puts society at risk." ”
The Associated Press reported that Jennifer could be charged with a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison if the prosecution called for four counts of manslaughter

Hailing 2024... with a farewell to the years before.
2009 was the year when everything changed.
2010 was the year I met my best friend.
2011 was the year I lost to NJROTC.
2012 was the year of my first, true summer love. Intermittent homelessness.
2013 was the year I graduated high school. Intermittent homelessness.
2014 was the year I left my church. Intermittent homelessness.
2015 was the year I almost died of malnourishment. Intermittent homelessness.
2016 was the year I left my parents.
2017 was the year I came out. Also the year I met one of my very best friends.
2018 was the year I made the most money. Also the year I met another one of my very best friends.
2019 was the year I left my pimp. Also the year I met my cat, who I adore. Also the year my cousin died, and the year my parents drove a rift between themselves and the rest of my family.
2020 was the year I went no contact with my parents, joined an open triad relationship, and greeted my child. It was also the year I had my NDE in the hospital. It was also the year my business died (though I did try to revive it throughout 2021 and 2022). So I gained perspective and a shit ton of trauma. It was also the year I met someone everyone told me I would hate but we've been best friends ever since and still talk all the time on fb messenger.
2021 was the year when, binderless at last, I could breathe -- and everything I did that year was focused on achieving that goal. It was also the year I traveled twice all on my own for the first time since leaving my pimp -- once to do photography for a really skeevy aspiring model in Maryland, and once to stay at my friend's queer commune in Colorado. It was also the year I published She's Not Here, 400-Year Frost, and Despite the Cold (the Anthology). This was also the year that a few of my friends died, and many others just dropped off and never resurfaced.
2022 was the year I went through the non-legal equivalent of two divorces -- one with a nesting partner with whom I now co-parent, and one with a queer-platonic life partner of ten years. It was also the year I heard from and saw my brother for the first time in three years. It was also the year I started on the right medication for my severe chronic migraines. It was also the year I lost my taste and smell due to covid (and things still aren't entirely back to normal). It was also the year I published Arachnapocalypse! The Anthology! and It Feeds!
2023.
2023 was the year I...
read 55 books (14,341 pages)
reconnected with my parents after almost three years of no contact
reconnected with my best friend (see 2010 bullet point) after some drama and maturing that needed done on both our parts
published The Wheel
did a 24-credit semester
got married with my partner of (now) almost four years, with whom it turns out I am incurably, deeply in love with
got attacked in a parking lot with my partner for being visibly queer
returned to therapy
finally moved out of the city that gave me so much anxiety
drove cross-country four times
fell in love with New Mexico
got to spend two months during summer living in and renovating a formerly-abandoned house with my partner
single-parented for one month
figured out the correct mix of melatonin and tylenol that lets me sleep through the night and feel rested
was forced to come to terms with my two most severe phobias, which I will not list here
got into the best shape of my life doing something I was surprised to enjoy -- cardio
sprained my ankle at a themed waterpark
moved cross-country, twice
got to visit one of my best friends for the first time in two years
drove through the most beautiful state I've ever encountered -- Idaho. I know, it surprised me, too.
started a job in a brand new career field -- and excelled
made my works available for free on my website
learned to write without my ex being a part of the creative process
established a consistent writing routine
learned that there is absolutely no good mexican food in Eastern Washington and that's a problem
published Desert Castle, a concept that first came to me in 2016
saw Moose (plural) for the first time in person (that's a bucket list item! I love me some meese!)
made a local writing-friend
shoveled snow
officially quit drinking starbuck's
think I finally grasped the concept of healthy forgiveness
organized and ran/am running the third and final anthology in the "VeryGood Collab Books" series I started working on in 2020
used points to buy a plane flight back home to help out my chosen family
started writing fanfiction
got halfway through the rewrite of a 90,000 word novel
reviewed the thousands-years-long storyline and universe build for a much bigger series I conceptualized in 2007 and fleshed out intermittently from 2011-2020
may have lost the person who has been like a mother to me since 2011. We don't know how things will go yet. She's in a coma.
Despite its more difficult moments, 2023 was the most fun and the most engaging challenge I've had in a long time. Aside from that last bullet-point and spraining my ankle, everything about this year -- even the hardships -- has been actively good. It's been a tremendously refreshing and healing year, and I attribute much of that to all of the novel experiences I had.
After 2020-2022 being so unbearably rough, I needed something new. This year was exactly that, and it gave me the space and energy I needed to allow myself to soften, to gain a real understanding of forgiveness, and to feel genuine hope and healing (possibly for the first time since COVID hit). I know my mostly-positive experience of 2023 seems to be relatively unique. I really hope 2024 can be for the rest of the world what 2023 was for me personally.

The California Condor: Breeding and Reintroduction Efforts for North America’s Largest Bird
Tumblr media
Fascinating Characteristics of the California Condor
1. Size and Wingspan: With a wingspan of up to nine and a half feet, the California Condor is North America’s largest bird. It can weigh anywhere from 15 to 31 pounds, making it one of the heaviest flying birds in the world.
2. Longevity: California Condors are known to have a long lifespan, often living up to 60 years or more in the wild. This remarkable longevity is a testament to their resilience and ability to survive in challenging environments.
3. Scavengers: Condors are scavengers, feeding primarily on large carcasses of animals such as deer, cattle, and marine mammals. Their bald head is an adaptation for feeding, as it helps keep the bird clean and prevents bacteria from building up on their feathers.
4. Soaring and Energy Conservation: California Condors are masters of soaring, utilizing thermal updrafts to gain altitude with minimal effort. This ability to glide for long distances conserves energy and allows them to search vast areas for food.
5. Parental Care: Condors typically mate for life and are known for their extensive parental care. Both parents share responsibility for incubating the egg and feeding the chick once it hatches. The chick will remain dependent on its parents for up to two years, after which it will venture out on its own.
Breeding and Reintroduction Efforts
The California Condor recovery program began in the 1980s when the remaining wild condors were captured and placed into captive breeding programs. This controversial decision was made to ensure the survival of the species, as the risks of leaving these birds in the wild were deemed too high. The breeding and reintroduction initiatives were collaborations between multiple organizations, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the San Diego Zoo, the Los Angeles Zoo, and the Peregrine Fund.
The captive breeding programs have been remarkably successful, with more than 400 birds in existence as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, and the population trend continues to be positive. Breeding techniques have included natural mating, artificial insemination, and double clutching, where a laid egg is removed to stimulate the female to lay a second egg. The chicks are often hand-reared using puppets that mimic adult condors to avoid human imprinting.
The reintroduction of captive-bred condors to the wild is a complex and gradual process. Young condors undergo a rigorous “boot camp” to prepare them for the perils of the natural world. They are taught to avoid power lines and people, and to recognize and handle their natural food.
Reintroduction began in 1991 in California, and later, in parts of Arizona, Utah, and Baja California in Mexico. The released condors are closely monitored using radio telemetry and satellite tracking. The reintroduction process, while challenging, has seen a steadily increasing wild population.
youtube
The Way forward for the California Condor
Despite these successes, the California Condor continues to face significant challenges. The leading cause of death among the reintroduced population is lead poisoning, often from ingesting bullet fragments in scavenged carcasses. This hazard arises from the bird’s scavenging behavior, where it often feeds on animals that have been shot with lead ammunition. The ingested lead fragments poison the bird’s system, causing severe illness and often death.
Efforts to combat this threat include legislative measures to restrict or ban the use of lead ammunition within the condor’s range. Moreover, education programs for hunters have been introduced to promote the use of non-lead alternatives. While progress has been made, the persistence of lead poisoning remains a significant hurdle in the path towards the complete recovery of the species.
Another ongoing threat is habitat loss due to urban development and changes in land use. Safe and suitable nesting and feeding sites are critical for the survival and growth of the condor population. Conservation organizations are working with landowners and government agencies to protect and manage these important habitats.
The survival of the California Condor depends on the continued commitment to these conservation efforts. This includes ongoing monitoring of the wild population, proactive management of threats, and public education to foster a coexistence between humans and condors.
We at Think Wildlife Foundation recently launched our Livelihoods for Conservation project to provide alternative, sustainable livelihoods to the communities living with wildlife. This is with the aim to incentivize conservation while uplifting these communities economically. You can purchase merchandise from these communities here!

The Four Deportations of Jean Marseille: Dispatch #3: 10/21/22 EDITED BY PETER ORNER AND LAURA LAMPTON SCOTT A protest against kidnappings in Port-au-Prince. Photo by Jean. Jean Marseille recorded these dispatches on his phone while surviving on the streets of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, from October through December 2022. As the chaos that followed the assassination of Haitian president Jovenel Moïse in July 2021 devolved into further lawlessness, Jean witnessed first-hand a city in free fall. Read: Dispatch #1 Dispatch #2 - - -Jean spent the next fourteen years in Florida… In school, kids made fun of him for his English. He told me he got his ass kicked more than a few times. When he was fifteen or so, Jean got into drugs, both buying and selling. He wanted friends, girlfriends; he wanted to be cool. —Peter Orner - - -Dispatch #3: 10/21/22 Good morning. This is me, Jean Marseille, in Haiti doing a small audio recording about the terrible things that happened last night. You see, there’s this group led by a guy called Vitelhomme. It’s his own personal gang. They operate directly behind the American embassy. It’s that close. My house is also behind the US embassy toward the Tabarre area. Vitelhomme is based around Brother Street. You get to Brother Street when you’re coming from Pasteur Gérald Bataille and you go down till you get to the Royal Embassy Road and that leads to Brother Street, and that’s where you’ve got this gang run by Vitelhomme. I know it’s not safe to say this, but this guy, he’s mystical. He won’t die. You can shoot him but he won’t take in the bullets. And his is one of the most powerful gangs at this time right now. He’s in a conflict with another gang called the 400 Mawozo, which are based around Croix-des-Bouquets. You know Croix-des-Bouquets? That’s the place where Wyclef Jean comes from. The other night Vitelhomme sent his gang members to go make a kidnapping and come up with some ransom money. Well, as they was crossing to get around the American embassy area, guess what? They got caught up and Vitelhomme’s guys got kidnapped by the 400 Mawozo. You understand exactly what I’m saying? Gang kidnapped gang. When they kidnapped those guys, one of them had four hundred thousand US dollars on him. So the 400 Mawozo killed him, along with two or three of his friends. That’s when Vitelhomme sent a message begging them. He said, “You know what? Just give me back the bodies of the guys that you killed and, you know, we’ll call it quits.” He didn’t even want the money. But the 400 Mawozo didn’t give the bodies back, because, you know, in Haiti when you kill a body you can’t give it back, because of that mystical stuff. And so they burned up those bodies. So now. That’s to let you understand the types of things that are going on. This is me, Jean Marseille, in Haiti, and it’s about 7:30 a.m. in the morning. I haven’t slept all night. - - -Okay, this is me again, Jean Marseille in Haiti. Getting to the second part of today’s recording. So like I was explaining, the 400 Mawozo are from the Croix-des-Bouquets area. And Vitelhomme is based behind the American embassy. It’s incredible that this type of stuff is going on so close to the American embassy! And that’s around the same area where MINUSTAH 1 was based in 2004. What I’m saying is that there used to be a lot of security in this area. Not anymore. So these two gangs, they’re in a type of war. Vitelhomme, he’s gotten really strong now. And it seems like now the 400 Mawozo are losing, because last night, around twelve houses were burned down. A lot of people were killed. A lot of gang members and also a lot of innocent people were killed. It’s hard to get pictures of these things. It’s not safe to get close. But a lot of times the people that are victims, they’re the ones that come to me telling me about this stuff. This is me, Jean Marseille. I hope you are starting to understand this a little better. There’s no safety here, anywhere. - - - 1 The United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti. https://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/dispatch-3-10-21-22

I wrote this in 2021.
Now, imagine how things would have gone down, had this bill been passed.
Nobody would have known Nahel was murdered after being threatened at gunpoint. Nobody would have questioned the report from the policemen who said he had tried to ram them over with the car he was driving.
Nobody would have heard those same policemen scream "I will put a bullet to your head" while the car was parked, followed by "Shoot him!"
Nobody would have seen those policemen punching the windshield of the parked car.
Take a second and let that sink in.
Yes there are riots, as there should be. This isn't about Nahel. This is about Adama, Zyed, Bouna, Cédric, and so many others who were murdered by the hand of the crybabies in blue. This is about a situation that hasn't changed since early 2000's.
Last night in Lyon, about 400 far-right neonazis decided to crawl from their cave with the intention to beat up anyone they see.
Not a single one of them was arrested or even remotely worried about running into policemen, despite being out in the open and making their intentions very clear.
You know why?
For the same reason we never see Spiderman and Peter Parker in the same room.
Whenever you see the men in blue, take out your camera and shove it on their faces. It is *your* right. They tried to take it from us, never forget it.
That's the only thing they fear, and that's our best weapon.
Those riots will keep happening, as long as the body in charge of keeping the Police in check isn't independent, as long as the unions act like they're in the fucking Godfather, as long as the government backs them up and nobody speaks.
The Constitutional Council just went ahead and slammed the "Sécurité Globale" bill that was supposed to snatch away anyone's right to film policemen "in action" during protests and whatnot aka, the Golden Way to more unchecked police brutality.
The Constitutional Council deems that this bill goes against basic freedom of the press (DUH). This decision comes one day after the crybabies in blue protested in the streets and blamed our legal system, and "people not being afraid of the Police anymore" for their own inability to do their job. The Minister of Interior (secretary of state in the US) was also there with them because of course he was (oh, and he's also under investigation for rape, lol).
Since they all share the same braincell, during the protest, they "reenacted" a mass shooting of the police by a "thug" and another hooded guy who was the "legal system". After "killing" the police the two of them hug like they're bff. The video is so shockingly cringe, I can't even bring myself to laugh. You can expect that kind of disrespect from people who think their mission is to instigate fear instead of respect. What does it say about them when the people in blue have such a profound misunderstanding of the root of their mission? What does it say about them when they're not able to denounce the systemic racism, violence, and lack of basic training in their own rank? What does it say about them when 74% of active police forces nonchalantly admit that they will be voting for the far-right party in the next election?
Urgh.
So, what does it mean for the bill? It means the legislative branch of power has two choices: rewrite it again, or drop it. With the presidential election fast approaching, there is no time for them to rewrite it. To be approved, a bill has to be greenlighted by the National Assembly along with the Senate (although the National Assembly has the last word and can force its way through). Once it is approved by those two bodies, anyone (random citizen or senator/deputy etc) can summon the Constitutional Council that will review the bill to see if it is in line with our Constitution.
They don't have enough time to do this now, because the legislative calendar for upcoming bills is packed until February/March, at which point, everything will shift towards the election, and any big decision will be put on standby. For once, our legendary bureaucracy maze is actually doing something good.
I think it's safe to call it a small victory.

For your Christmas event!!! Can I request Candy Cane #16 with either Tsukki or Tadashi? I’ll let you decide :)
“I’m not going to touch you unless you beg” with tsukishima kei and yamaguchi tadashi
Tumblr media
cw. toys [vibrator], blindfolding, bondage, mentions of overstimulation, orgasm denial? edging, masturbation, fingering, oral [recieving], spanking
wc. 400
a/n. the way my mind immediately said “what about tsukki AND tadashi”, sorry if u just wanted one of them, i just couldn’t help myself
Tumblr media
“what’s wrong? hm?” the blonde asks, knowing full well everything that’s going on in that feeble mind of yours. it’s been about half an hour since he’d started teasing you, keeping the small bullet vibrator close to your throbbing clit and watching your blindfolded face contort in pleasure.
“t-too much-! ‘m gonna cum a-again” you let him know, as if he couldn’t pick up the signs your body was already giving him.
“what do you think tadashi, should we let her?” tsukishima asks.
“no” a simple reply and tsukishima pulled his hands away from you, leaving you with empty traces of your high. you desperately buck your hips in the air in hopes you could find his hand, but it’s no use.
he’s already far away from you, watching your writhing body from the edge of the bed and smirking at your distress.
“tsukki!” you call out for him, your wrists struggling against their handcuffs.
“i’m not going to touch you unless you beg” he says, you feel the bed shift in weight towards your right side and quickly squirm in the direction, only to receive a small slap to your pussy.
“a-aah!” you moan, your back arching from the bed and feeling the burn from the slap dissipate slowly.
“stop squirming, behave” tsukkishima orders. you quickly recognize his fingers squeezing your cheeks and holding your face. “you’re giving such a bad first impression to our guest, aren’t you ashamed of yourself?”
yamaguchi watches from his seat, slowly stroking his cock to the sight in front of him.
“now beg, slut” he says, and you quickly cede to his instructions.
“please t-touch me tsukki! want you to f-fuck me, or use the toy on m-me” you plead “wanna cum so bad tsukki”
“atta girl” he answered “that’s what i like to hear” he pushes his fingers into your sopping cunt, making a scissoring motion with them and spreading you as wide as he can with his index and middle finger. “would you like to have a taste, tadashi?”
the dark haired male nods and approaches the bed, eager to make you writhe with his tongue. he licked his lips before leaning down and eating you out like a starved man.
“t-tadashi!” you moan out his name, thrashing your legs around him only for kei to slap your thigh and make you shriek at the sudden impact.
“i told you to behave”

"Up until recently, the Pentagon had been mostly satisfied with the war in Afghanistan. The United States was losing for most of the occupation, and they knew that, but a drawn-out conflict like that is still good for imperialism, even if you’re losing a war in some capacity. You have this extremely bloated military budget. At times, the United States was spending $400 or $500 million per day on expenditures just for the occupation of Afghanistan. It was a huge boon for the military-industrial complex, and it allowed the US military to grow its technological arsenal.
Think of the energy companies providing fuel to all the different defense contractors that maintain the bases. Think of the companies that were building vehicles that came off the assembly line at the factory and went straight into the roads of Afghanistan, where they would get blown up, sending the military back to the factory to replace them. Think of all the companies that made the bullets, the missiles, the tank rounds. Obviously, the defense industry has an interest in keeping the war going.
As for the officers in the Pentagon, they get their combat experience, they get their medals, they get their command experience, they get promoted, and then they go into these six- or seven-figure jobs in the defense industry a week after they retire. So there is no desire from the Pentagon to end it quickly, when an ongoing occupation is a path to building their résumé and to personal enrichment.
It was good for a long time, but ultimately there comes a point when it poses a problem for the empire to be bogged down in a war they’re clearly losing for twenty years. The United States is supposed to project power as this invincible military machine. At a certain point, the failures in Afghanistan and Iraq make the United States look weak and defeatable. It starts to hurt the image of American imperialism and the kind of dominance it wants to project in the world. And so the ruling class starts looking for other targets for regime change."

One and Nineteen More: In Defense of Texas Red
Written so as to be entirely sentence-mixable from the lyrics of Big Iron, with almost no mid-word splices.
Texas Red was not a killer 'fore a ranger tried to take him maybe a tax evader1 but no killer Twenty men had tried to take him and that many men were dead that many men, no more the notches on his pistol numbered one and nineteen more And so do the men so he didn't kill any men that would have had him went on livin' in Agua Fria
And it was "one and nineteen more" and not "twenty" maybe that one was a big worry to him made one fatal slip, a bullet ripped, and there before Texas Red lay the body of a ranger oh, he might have went back alive, might have stopped it but not now he went on livin', knew he was a killer now his youth was over in a moment, no more play nineteen more came after him, and now he knew it didn't matter
now, the folks of Agua Fria were worried about outlaws but the folks didn't worry about Texas Red dared to ask his business, relayed the story of the ranger to him he lived in this town from his youth, folks knew him was hardly an outlaw to them
and more, Agua Fria wasn't in Arizona There was about 40 times 40 times 24 times 11 times one and 4 more feet2 between them the ranger rode for days to Agua Fria when he had no business there hardly spoke to the townsfolk, made dead a man who lived there and rode on maybe the vicious killer was the ranger but all you talk about is the bigness of his iron

if you can, please help us support the children's ward of EMERGENCY, a war hospital in Afghanistan. Thank you!
more details under cut
Playing with friends, going to school, or just spending time with family... for most children, that’s what the fabric of “normal” life looks like. But for the children of Afghanistan, “normal” life is also one where explosions and gunfire could rip their world apart at any moment, killing or maiming them and their loved ones. In the past 20 years, Afghan children have lived their entire lives in the shadow of the war, where air raid sirens are as commonplace as bedtime stories and they are more likely to be a victim than even a soldier— because when it comes to the destruction of war, it doesn’t matter how old you are. Bombs don’t discriminate. Neither do bullets.
90% of the victims of contemporary war are civilians, and though the western forces are withdrawing from Afghanistan, that’s actually exacerbating the danger to civilians. According to the U.N., Afghan civilians were killed or injured at record levels in the first half of 2021, with thousands wounded and over 1,600 civilians killed to date. 34% of those were children. As western forces withdraw and internal conflict between north and south escalates, those numbers are expected to rise and more children will be killed or experience devastating, life-changing injury.
Mdullah is such a child. Just 5 years old, he was walking to school when the bombs struck. Giles tells us how traumatic it was to wake up at age 39 realizing he had lost both his legs—no one should have to experience that, but especially not a 5 year old child! But that’s what Mdullah is experiencing. To compound matters, his parents cannot even visit the hospital to comfort him due to COVID restrictions. Innocent victims like Mdullah are who we will be helping.
YOUR MISSION. In partnership with Random Acts, Legacy of War, and EMERGENCY, we’re setting a goal of raising $100,000 to operate the children’s ward of EMERGENCY fully through the end of this year. EMERGENCY is an NGO and charity hospital that ensures all victims of conflict receive free, quality medical care. 1 in 4 Afghans have been treated by EMERGENCY, and as the west pulls out of Afghanistan the need for this hospital, especially their children’s ward, is expected to be greater than ever. No child should have to suffer from the effects of war, but together, we’ll be able to help 400-500 children to survive and heal. Join us and help ensure that humanitarian aid can be rendered to the most innocent of victims of war.
Your donations will fund EMERGENCY’s children’s hospital so it can continue to treat children injured by war throughout 2021. This will allow the hospital, built on the grounds of a bombed kindergarten, to continue operation through the end of the year and help approximately 400-500 children through surgery, medical care, and rehabilitation. Because we’re GISH, we’re also setting aside funds to provide a stuffed animal to every child that is treated by emergency to act as an emotional support plushie. As so many of these child patients are orphaned or have parents that cannot visit them in hospital due to COVID restrictions, it’s our hope that this additional support will provide a little extra comfort.
Our GISH Ambassador, Giles, hadn’t returned to Afghanistan for 9 years due to his own personal traumas, but felt it was important to summon the courage to go back now to help share these children’s stories and assist them. We invite you to rise up as well to help us achieve our goal and support these kids and the good medical professionals who are working to help them heal. DONATIONS ARE 100% TAX-DEDUCTIBLE (for countries other than the U.S., deductions are contingent on your laws). 90% of the donations will benefit the Change-A-Life efforts with 10% to Random Acts’ General Fund to support random acts of kindness all over the world.
