Had a chat with Dean (lovely) and JC Stewart (also lovely) and learned that JC and Conor used to live together which is why JC was out with Conor to be introduced to the boys (allegedly before Christmas, though JC wasn't 100%)

hung around the gate after the show even though it was pretty clear they wouldn't say hi, but it gave us a chance to see Mark (who'd surprised the boys with a visit) as he was waiting for someone to let him off the venue grounds. "Well, they'll have to open this at some point, they ordered McDonald's!"

Spoiler: they did not open the gate for McDonalds. Primož tried to scale it, which almost worked but looked dangerous, and so the delivery person threw it over the top. It was a spectacle

・He tries to understand your side of the argument and listen to you.

・After your talk he suggests watching a movie or something to ease your minds.

The coolest thing about Rust Nation UK 2024 confirmed all my worst fears about software supply chain security (and then xz made things worse)

Something super cool happened on stage in the closing keynote of Rust Nation UK 2024. Tokio 1.37 was released and published live. The audience cheered (watch the clip below for confirmation). I was very impressed.

I was also terrified. It confirmed that there's no external scrutiny placed on Tokio releases.

Tokio isn't just an open source side project that is made for fun. It sits at the centre of many of the world's most important messaging systems.

It is the kind of software that is ideal for nation states to attack.

Just from looking at the logos of its corporate sponsors, we can see that it's important to AWS, Microsoft Azure, Facebook, Discord and Dropbox.

Anyone who is able to introduce a security back door through the project's internal processes will open many of the most important technology platforms that the industry has produces.

This isn't unique to Tokio, or to Rust. But the Rust community is especially vulnerable to supply chain security issues for (at least) 3 reasons:

Most projects are dependent on a very small number of crates

Those crates are maintained by a very small number of people

We trust that Rust has enough inherent safeguards

We expect that someone else would have checked the code

The current state is fragile at best. We (the West) face a very hostile security environment. I wholeheartedly support growing the number of contributors and increasing the accessibility of important open source projects, including Tokio. Let's also increase their security posture.

Have you seen the teaser of Berlin?

I must say I cringe... While trying to tolerate it.

Yep! I'm trying to reserve judgment until we know more - because these 30 seconds of very flashy/flashing visuals didn't really give us more than what we already knew from that Berlin 2023 launch event thingie. 

Today was the first day of filming so these character intros (I don't know what to call them) were surely filmed a while back, and maybe they didn't have more than the bare-bones of the characters back then, and that's what we got. I'm sure that we'll find out more stuff in time, and I get that they probably wanted to keep momentum and that’s why they dropped a lot of things in a very short amount of time (the Tudum tidbit, the launch event and now this), but I'd have preferred to wait a few weeks/a month and to get something a little more intriguing about the characters. And while it may be unfair of me, I can’t help but think of these new characters in terms of members of the old gang - while I’m sure they’ll end up being more than that.

What I can say is that I'll be very interested to see how the character of Keila turns out, moreso than any others, and it's mostly because of the way she was presented. She gave me some ~quirky nerd!girl vibes, and I'm dying to see how her dynamic with Berlin would be.

We know Berlin worked best with women who took no crap from him (Raquel, Nairobi, Tokio) but also that he managed to intimidate or downright terrify other women (Stockholm, Ariadna). So I hope Kaila’s cute and super competent and also she takes zero crap from Berlin or any of the other guys. Yet she was the one described as “not an expert in the emotional (side of things)” so god please spare us of her pining for someone in the gang (please not Berlin) and give us something like-- she’s the female embodiment of Martin’s Boom Boom Ciao approach to life or something. But I’m curious.
