for simplicity's sake its still readable if you do just want to start at countdown 51 and down to 1--is in fact probably more readable this way--but if you're reading countdown at all the search for ray palmer issues are definitely worth your time; otherwise the only one i consider vital is tt #47. i would also recommend robin 1993 #178 where tim calls donna to ask about red robin suit after that bc it helps tie up that thread a little (albeit not well).

couple questions to look up/theorize on: how long did this take, how many of the earths did they go to... after this Donna goes on to titans 2008, jason does his stint in robin (177, 182-183), then battle for the cowl (😮‍💨), but im not sure where kyle winds up so i should. Check that lol. i know at least at one point someone references two days passing but thats the only indication of time i actually rmr.

overall plot thread for "the challengers": the monitors identify duela dent as a universal aberration by the monitors and shes killed by the rogue monitor who later starts going by solomon; jason and donna investigate her death and run into the monitor jason starts calling bob, who tells them they need to find ray palmer to prevent the multiverse from 'sploding, or whatever; theyre on the run from monitors and various Baddies Of The Week as they do this bc jay donna and kyle are all considered threats to the sanctity of the multiverse or whatever; kyle shows up, saves donna, and joins the team; they find ray palmer, bob tries to kill him gasp shock horror betrayal; bob gets killed by solomon; the other plot threads in countdown converge around here (see next paragraph), and they're mostly just trying to get home with the threat of the next Crisis on the horizon; big fight; jason drops the red robin suit in a dumpster and catches the bus back to gotham with Harley and holly robinson (they landed, i believe, in metropolis, but i would have to double check that).

other plot threads: karate kid caught the most comic-book-y futuristic nanobot plague you can imagine, holly (and later harley) wind up in a gotham womens shelter run by amazons as a covert op situation masterminded by granny goodness who is masquerading as athena on themyscira, piper and trickster are... something to do with barts death im honestly not totally clear what their plot was supposed to be, and mary marvel grappling with gaining losing and regaining magic powers and uh rapidly oscillating in and out of being eeeevil. i think thats all.

so the plot itself is mostly coherent in the point A leading reasonably to point B sense all the way through; the major issue there is just like, 1) the infighting with the monitors being really poorly handled and the logic behind all that being so iffy as to almost be a plot hole and 2) the reasoning for jay and donna to decide to go along with and help bob the monitor in the first place being *extremely* flimsy.

the *character* thread that im struggling with in my mental retelling is how a little over halfway through people got randomly extra hostile to Jason--disproportionately so--and not even in a way where the thread was carried coherently from issue to issue. and on one hand the impact of "the challengers" on the multiverse was so wacky and comic book-y that i *could* do a copout and blame that (at least partially) but like i actually want to figure out where i think donna and jasons friendship can go from this and i *am* interested in the idea that donna was upset enough about jason shooting her as a fakeout to get the Bad Guys off their back that she rapidly changed her mind about him. like that does have a lot of potential. its just that the execution was all over the place.

i guess where im at is the same place i always wind up at with countdown or bftc which is just like. not having any one concrete idea in my head of what i think Really happened, just a fluid set of ideas that have potential to build off of depending on what im doing with any specific story concept. :/. o well lol

Whumptober: Day 2 - Explosion

Title: Replacement

Word Count: 1,315

Author’s Note: I posted yesterday on AO3, just not here. Something about posting on AO3 is just easier for me. My first time writing Tim as a major character and my first time even mentioning Jason in a fic. Hope I didn’t butcher anyone.

This is what Jason experienced, Tim thought, and that was almost enough to make him laugh. Maybe he would’ve if he had the ability to, but his cracked ribs protested at the mere thought of it. Breathing by itself was a challenge, the bruised skin on his chest pulling with each stuttering inhale. He couldn’t laugh, could barely breathe, couldn’t get up and walk to safety. But he could think. Clear as day, his brain spoke to him through the fog of pain.

Jason Todd.

… Jason Todd-Wayne…

The Red Hood.

The second Robin.

His attempted murdered.

His technical brother.

How strange it was for Tim to think about the man - no. The boy. The damaged and traumatized boy -  at a time like this. He was dying. He was dying and he knew it and for some reason he was thinking about Jason. He ought to be thinking about Dick, whom he always thought about since that fateful meeting oh-so-long ago. Not in a creepy way, but after so many years of being fascinated by him - first as an acrobat and then as Robin - it had simply become second nature for Tim to think about Dick.

Ok, so maybe it was a little creepy.

Creepy or not, it would’ve made sense for Tim to think of Dick as he laid there, broken and battered and slipping away. It would also have made sense for him to think of Bruce, whom he’d changed his entire life for. Or his parents. Or his millions of nannies and loved and cared for him. Basically, it would’ve made sense to think of anyone but Jason in his final moments and yet, that’s who his brain decided to fixate on.

Jason. Jason. Jason.

Specifically, Tim was thinking about how’d he managed to do it again. He’d managed to go out and get himself into the exact situation Jason had been in. Well, maybe not the exact same but the components were all there. A rogue (this time Shiva instead of the Joker), a blunt object (a bo staff - his bo staff - instead of a crowbar), and a ticking bomb announcing just how long Tim had left on this earth. Even if the situation that put him here was different, enough was the same that people would notice. People would notice, and people would compare. It was as if Tim was destined to always be exactly where Jason was, leaving Tim to follow too big footprints his feet couldn’t fill, and Jason without a place to be.

Tim would always be Jason’s replacement. Was it any wonder the older boy hated him? The bomb made a loud beep and Tim wearily dragged his gaze to it’s flashing numbers. 01:00

His final minute. Tim sighed in acceptance. He never expected anyone to come for him. Even if they realized he was gone, he’d left no clues about where he went or why. He didn’t want to face their reaction over him meeting up with Shiva, didn’t want to explain to insecurities that led to him seeking her out for more training. Even if they had found him, there was no way Tim could explain how his plea for training led to this. He didn’t even understand it himself.

Tim’s body screamed as he heaved out a sob. He wasn’t scared. Or maybe he was and had simply forgotten what fear felt like. But he was upset. He was upset at himself, hated himself, for what he had done. He had ruined - or was going to ruin, in 45 seconds - the batfamily. Tim would become another Robin failed and Bruce would spiral into an even deeper abyss. He’d never take another Robin, not after this. He’d have no light and the Batman would fall, taking Gotham with him. And Dick. Dick Grayson, who had showed him so much kindness the day his world had fallen apart, who had saved Tim long before Robin was a thing. Is this really how Tim would thank him? By being another stain on his legacy, dying in his colors while bearing his name? By ruining Robin for Bruce and him? Tim knew Dick didn’t really want him as Robin. The man had given his blessing as a way to get rid of him. Tim knew it. But he had wanted to make Dick proud and this…

Tim had never been capable of making anyone proud.

And in a final act of selfishness, Tim would steal from Jason once more. First his title as Robin and now his title as the Dead Robin. Bruce would grieve him, would probably put his suit in a glass case, and Jason would be… what? The Forgotten Robin? Another sob racked Tim’s frame and he could barely make out the timer through his tears - 30 seconds. Suddenly Tim found himself hoping with every fiber of his broken being that this would be the end for him. Please, let him stay dead. Don’t bring him back. Don’t take that event from Jason too. Let the boy keep something for himself.

Maybe with him gone, the boy could heal and become a man.

Tim closed his eyes and rested his head on the wall he was slumped against. His body quivered as more tears slipped out but he was calm with acceptance. Even though his heart continued to scream and plead for forgiveness, his brain was finally quiet. He was okay with dying. He could hope that Bruce and Dick and Jason would be okay too.

“TIM!”

Tim’s eyes slowly opened, his mind too foggy to make anything move quickly. The world was a blur around him but through the room’s only window he could still make out a figure fast approaching. The sky was midnight blue, the moon was unrealistically big, and the figure would not have been noticeable if not for the bright red dome on his head.

All sense of calm and peace drained out of Tim’s body, leaving him cold and scared. He wanted to scream. No! Stay away! The timer was ticking, ticking, ticking and Jason was getting closer, closer, and closer. He would get caught in the explosion! He would die, again, an accident this time, and it would be all Tim’s fault! Please! Turn around! Why was he even here? How did he find him? Jason didn’t even like him! What type of sick joke-

“I’m sorry!”

For a second Tim wasn’t sure where the words came from, wondered if another person had joined the “going to die” party. But then he became aware of his throat burning and he knew that he had said it. He wasn’t sure if Jason heard him, knew he probably hadn’t, but Tim still had to say it. Something had occurred to him in the few seconds it took for Tim to think his thoughts, something that made him feel like an awful person for all he had believed about Jason.

Maybe Jason wasn’t as lost as they thought.

It was a strange thought and yet Tim couldn’t help but feel like he should’ve had it sooner. Jason hated him, that he was sure of. Jason hated him and yet here he was, somehow tracking him down and now risking his life to save him. Jason, who had tried to kill him multiple times. Jason. Trying to save him.

The thought warmed him. Maybe, somehow, Jason had healed more than any of them knew. At least enough to not want Tim to suffer the same fate he had. Underneath all the trauma there was still something of the old Robin.

30 Day OTP Challenge

Day 6 - Getting Caught Making Out

Pairing: Birdflash - Dick Grayson/Wally West

Wordcount: 900

Takes place 6ish months before GU-N begins. Wally is 19, Dick is 18, and Jason is 13. (Yes, I fudged with the ages in this story. )

Dick smothered a laugh against the collar of Wally's suit jacket, as they stumbled into a bookshelf in the small family library they had taken refuge in.

"Careful there, wonder-boy," Wally murmured against the shorter teens ear, ruffling dark hair and making Dick shiver. "You're gonna get us caught." He flicked his tongue out playfully, before pulling the lobe of Dick's ear into his mouth, sucking on it gently, turning his laughter into a choked off groan. 

The music and chatter from the Gala currently taking place at Wayne Manor, was a buzzing in the distance. Close enough to be no more than a small concern, but a fact to keep in mind nonetheless.

Dick turned his head so he could get at the exposed skin of Wally's neck, wrapping the navy blue tie he wore once around his fist, holding the red head still. He dragged his lips up Wally's neck, over his jaw, and stopped at his mouth, lips brushing against one another as he spoke. "That's half the fun."

Wally groaned, throwing caution to the wind, as he tangled the fingers of one hand into the soft strands of Dick's hair, kissing him hard. His other hand fisting at Dick's hip, pulling him in closer.

Dick moaned appreciatively as Wally deepened the kiss, tilting his head back with the grip he had on his hair. Moan turning into a soft gasp as Wally moved from his mouth to his neck, pulling his shirt collar aside to get to the rapidly beating pulse beneath.

Wally nipped at the mark he had raised on Dick's neck, before soothing it with his tongue, licking his way back up Dick's neck to steal another heated kiss. "Hmmm, missed you. Missed this." He moved his hands to Dick's waist, and flipped their positions, so Dick was pinned back against the shelf, one of Wally's legs between his, shoving him back and up against the shelf.

"Guess you shouldn't leave for three weeks again then, huh?" Dick smirked down at the red head from his slightly higher vantage point.

"Mmm, guess not. Not if this is the kind of sass you're gonna give me." Wally nosed against Dick's jaw, dragging just a hint of teeth over his skin, before nipping hard at the underside of Dick's jaw, one hand trailing up his stomach to his chest, to twist one nipple sharply. 

"Wally..." Dick whined softly, biting at his lip as deft fingers unbuttoned the top few buttons of his shirt, exposing sharp collar bones, and scared golden skin. He wrapped one arm around Wally's shoulder, and arched his back slightly. He reached up with his other hand to grab onto the shelf at his back, and ground down against the muscled thigh that was between his legs. 

Both groaned, the abrupt sound of it like a gunshot in the dark. They were too caught up in each other to notice however. Wally urged his slightly smaller boyfriend to keep moving, with kisses and bites to the sensitive skin of his neck and shoulders, and the rocking of his own hips.

Dicks head was thrown back, biting into the fabric of his jacket, as Wally sucked another mark into his chest, the sting of teeth over the new welt making him cry out, moaning Wally's name. He used the grip he had on the shelf and Wally's shoulder for balance, as he continued to roll his hips, rubbing his and Wally's erections together. 

Their quiet moans and pants slowly filled the silence of the library. Still quiet enough not to be heard from outside the dense stacks. Loud enough, however, to disguise the sound of approaching footsteps. 

All activity came to a halt as an embarrassed and surprised shout, sounded to their left. "Hey, Dick, Bruce's lookin' for - ugh! What the fuck?!"

Dick lost his grip on the shelf, and it was only the arm he had around Wally's shoulder, and Wally's own grip on his waist that kept him from an epic, and embarrassing faceplant.

"Jay! Um... it's... it's not what it looks like?" Wally buried his face into Dick's neck and mumbled unintelligibley, as Dick rubbed his neck consolingly.

Jason crossed his arms across his chest, raising an eyebrow at the elder, former robin, freckled cheeks scrunched up in annoyance, a blush spreading across the youngers face. "Oh, so you weren't tryin' t'fuck yer boyfriends brains out in the library?"

"Language, Little-wing!"

"Really? That's what yer concerned about right now. Is my swearin'? And not the fact that I just walked on you two," he waved a hand back and forth between the two older boys, both who were still slightly panting, clothes askew. "Basically havin' sex, where anyone could waltz in?"

Wally groaned and thunked his head against Dick's shoulder. "Batman is gonna kill me. Death by batarang."

"Shush, no one's killing anyone." Dick could feel the heat from the blush Wally had burning across his face. He was sure he had a similar blush to match. 

"We weren't having sex, we're...you know what? Nope." Dick cut a hand sharply through the air in front of him. "I'm not having this conversation with a ten year old."

"I'm thirteen!"

"Sorry thirteen. What do I gotta give you to not tell Bruce about this?"

The grin that spread across Jason's face would have made even the hardest of Gotham's Rogues nervous.

*clears throat* What can I say about Edward Nashton that hasn't been said before?  He’s one of Batman’s most challenging foes. A man who came from a neglectful childhood who had to work for his immense knowledge. In the right hands, he is fascinating to watch and often hilarious. I hope in the future, I can enjoy him as immensely as I do now.

Short Description; of what exactly? I'm just going with this challenge. It was great, made me think a little and brought up some classic comics that I haven't thought about in a while.

Deadshot; Even though he hasn't been himself in comics for a while he is still my favorite. I first found him through Identity Crisis (which is a good novel, and should be read) and from there I just had to read more with him in it.

Day 2: Reunion Hugs

Pairing: Birdflash, Dick Grayson/Wally West

Word Count: 441

1 year before GU-N, they're 18.

Dick tapped his feet impatiently, his shoes beating out an uneven rhythm on the concrete sidewalk outside the museum. His suit that he had worn for the gala was rumpled, the seam was split at the shoulder, and his one knee was ripped, the edges jagged and burnt from where he had skinned it. Alfred was going to give him his disappointed, but resigned face. Since he hadn't meant to do anything to wreck his suit, Gotham was just like that sometimes, Alfred would probably forgive him. He had told Wally that the gala would most likely new targeted, and that he didn't have to go with him, but his boyfriend had insisted. Between school and their "night jobs" they didn't often get a chance to go on dates, so this would be perfect.

Luckily Batgirl was able to quickly get the would-be thieves cornered and collared before any real damage could be done.

Dick and Wally had still gotten separated in the initial panic, and one of the thugs recognized him as "Wayne's brat" and had thought to use him as ransom.

Another reason he hated these events. High chance of threat from Rogues and crooks, and someone always recognized a Wayne in attendance. Be it him or Bruce.

His annoyed musings ground to a halt when he heard his name being called.

Looking over his shoulder he could see a familiar mop of wildfire red hair, weaving through the crowd.

He had hardly turned around before Wally had broken through the crowd, long legs easily carrying him across the distance to get to Dick. Who immediately, up on Wally getting in reach, wrapped his arms around the taller man, dropping his forehead to Wally's shoulder.

Wally easily returned the hug, one hand going into Dick's dark hair, long fingers scritching against his scalp, rubbing out tension Dick didn't even realize was there.

Dick could hear the bulbs flashing as paparazzi took their pictures, but couldn't dredge up the ability to care.

"You okay?"

Dick nodded against Wally's shoulder, before pulling back far enough to see his face. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just another day in the life of Dick Grayson-Wayne. I did warn you."

"Yeah you did." Wally chuckled as he nuzzled into Dick's hair playfully, pulling back into a hug. Logically he knew Dick would have been fine. But seeing your currently civilian boyfriend being taken hostage, and knowing that he's a more than capable kick-ass vigilante, are two different things.

"So, Dickie, whadaya say we blow this joint, and go get greasy burgers, and end the night on a much better note?"

"Best idea you've had all day."

I'm going to sound stupid, but I’m going to have to go with Harvey. He is often used, but rarely used correctly. Too often, his former identity is shrugged off and he's shown as a complete monster who doesn’t even follow his own rules instead of a broken and confused man who is still worthy of redemption.
