A/N: This is a shorter one, but I think I like how it turned out.

It’s a bit of a dreary day. The sky is dark and overcast, and clouds threaten to pour down rain at any minute. The air outside is thick with moisture, a cloud of fog having settled over the town. Perhaps the perfect weather for the conversation they’re about to have.

Emmett sits with Jess at the dining table in her house, awaiting Sebastian’s arrival. This discussion has been a long time coming, and he wishes they’d had it sooner than this.

But as they say, the best time to start was yesterday, and the next best time is now.

They sit in silence listening to the clock tick, having already discussed the things they want to say a dozen times over. All that’s left to do is wait.

Not soon enough, or maybe too soon, Emmett can’t tell, the door clicks open and Sebastian makes his way into the dining room.

“Sorry I’m late, I was–” he stops short, and an almost imperceptible hardness comes to his eyes as he spots them sitting there.

“Okay. What’s going on?”

Emmett takes a deep breath. “Come, sit down.”

Sebastian heistates a moment, eyes sweeping the room from left to right. Emmett is about to say something again when he finally moves towards the table and pulls out a chair, slowly sitting down in it.

Now it’s Jess’s turn to breathe deep. “We know these past months have been hard on you, and–”

“I’m not doing this.” Sebastian moves to stand, leaving Jess to sit there with her mouth hanging open.

“Seb, wait,” Emmett says. “Please hear us out. You don’t have to say anything, just listen to us for a second.”

Sebastian pauses, and a muscle in his jaw twitches.

“Just for a second. You don’t have to say anything.” he says again.

Sebastian closes his eyes for a moment and lets go of a sigh, sitting back down with crossed arms and angling a surly look at them.

Jess glances at Emmett, then tries again. “We know these past months have been hard on you, and we want to help.”

Emmett jumps in. “You’ve been in a really irritable mood lately, you’re jumpy, you’re not eating, you’re barely sleeping, and when you do, you have nightmares.”

“Gee, thanks.” Sebastian monotones.

“We’re not trying to insult you.” Jess says.

Emmett nods. “We want to understand. We want to help. You–”

“Please tell us what’s going on so we know how to.” Jess cuts him off, and Emmett shoots a look at her. That was not part of the plan.

Sebastian sneers at the table and is about to say something when Emmett interjects. “Actually, I was going to say you don’t have to tell us what’s going on.” he shoots another pointed look at Jess, and she glances down at the table in shame. “Just know that we know you’re having a hard time, and we’re here for you.”

There’s a beat of silence before Sebastian asks, “Is that it?”

Emmett and Jess glance at each other. There was some other stuff they were going to mention, like how Sebastian keeps lashing out and hurting them, but saying that now seems like a bad move. And he doesn’t want to guilt Sebastian by saying how it pains them to see him like this. Besides, they already said they were here to help, and that’s the main point of this conversation, right?

“That’s it.” Emmett nods.

Sebastian’s lip curls again. “So you dragged me down here to say what you could’ve said over a text?”

“We thought–”

Sebastian leans forward on the table. “Nothing’s going on. You know what you can do to help? Stop looking for things that aren’t there.” he says, voice rising. But Emmett thinks he detects a little waver towards the end.

Okay, Emmett knows that Sebastian knows that they know something is wrong, otherwise he would have pretended to be oblivious instead of refusing to hear them out at first. So what’s the point in continuing to deny it? Emmett already said he doesn’t have to tell them what’s happening, so why does he feel like he can’t audibly admit anything is wrong? Because he’s sure transmitted that message through his actions.

Sadness and sympathy flare in his chest. Whatever he’s going through is far, far from easy, that much is obvious. Why on Earth does he feel the need to keep the secret so tightly wrapped? Why doesn’t he feel like he can tell them anything? Did they do anything to make him feel that way?

Emmett is about to ask this question when Jess speaks first. “Sebastian, it is painfully obvious that you’re going through something.” her voice is tense, like she’s trying to reign in her frustration. “Please let us in. There’s nothing we wouldn’t do for you, we’re just trying to help.” She leans forward and moves to place her hand over Sebastian’s, but he draws away before she can.

“There’s nothing to help.” he says, standing abruptly.

Jess seems like she’s about to say something again, and Emmett braces himself for the fallout, but instead she takes a deep breath and sighs. “Okay.” she says, seeming resigned.

“If you’ll excuse me, I’m leaving to go ruminate over the many issues you seem to think I have.” with that, he exits the house, slamming the door on his way out.

A beat of silence. “Well. That could’ve gone better.” Emmett says.

Jess sighs again. “I’m sorry I went and asked him what happened. I’m just– dying to know what’s upsetting him so much.”

“I know. I am too, but we can’t force it from him. We have to let him come to us on his own time.”

“Yea, I know. I regretted it as soon as I said it.”

They sit in silence, then.

Emmett understands Jess’s curiosity. He does, he wants to know what’s going on too. But that shouldn’t be the priority. The priority needs to be doing what they can to make things easier for Sebastian. And so far Jess seems to have been preoccupied with why Sebastian is behaving this way, rather than how they can help.

He shouldn’t assume this, though. He knows Jess is just as worried as he is, and there’s no way to know precisely what’s going through her head. But her behavior has been speaking volumes.

He doesn’t know what to think. He doesn’t know what to do. Sebastian won’t accept their help. He supposes that’s his prerogative, but why?

He’s been spending an awful lot of time in his apartment, more than usual. That can’t be healthy, but what if forcing him out does more harm than good?

What if he’s avoiding something? Or someone? Does he have a– a bully, or something? When Emmett thinks of bullies, he usually thinks of middle and high school kids shoving others into lockers, and they left those people behind years ago. Besides, what kind of bully would have Sebastian reacting this severely?

He discards the idea. It’s got to be something more. Some family issues, maybe? Is it possible he’s gotten into drugs? Did he step in something that he can’t step out of? But what?

Look at him. Now he’s worrying more about the why’s instead of helping. What a hypocrite.

The fact stands though that there’s not much they can do if Sebastian won’t let them. And he seems pretty intent on not letting them. But that doesn’t make it any easier to just stand by and watch him suffer. And that seems to be all they can do right now.

Right?

“You would be Wallace, right?”

The chef looked up from the carrot he was chopping. The moment he saw Elze’ith’s face, he hastily looked back down. Elze’ith grimaced slightly; the other castle residents had given him a similar reaction when he had tried to reach out. Still, though, he couldn’t let one rebuff deter him.

“My name is Elze’ith. I just started working with Lord Denholm on magical research. I thought I would introduce myself. It is nice to meet you. Your food really is lovely.”

Wallace paid him no mind, sweeping the carrot into a bowl and reaching for an onion. Elze’ith bit his lip. Why was no one talking to him? He sighed.

“I know your sister.” Wallace went rigid. His hand tensed around the knife he was holding. Elze’ith kept going, words coming out almost in a rush now that he had gotten a reaction. “Not well, but… I was there for her wedding. She is doing well. I could talk to you about her for a bit, if you like…?”

“Please, leave.” Wallace’s voice was quiet, almost imperceptible, but Elze’ith heard it nonetheless. The faint spark of hope in Elze’ith’s chest went out in an instant. If there had been any chance at a connection with this man, he had just ruined it.

“Very well. I am sorry to have disturbed you.”

He made his exit. He refused to think of it as fleeing.

“Wallace.” Elze’ith’s voice was firm. It almost made him sound confident, even though he felt anything but. Wallace froze, hands full with a tray of freshly baked bread.

It smelled delightful. It almost smelled like home. The fragrance made something twist in Elze’ith’s chest.

“I know that you have been drugging my meals sometimes,” Elze’ith said. Wallace’s eyes went wide. He continued hastily, “I am not here out of anger. And I do not want to get you into trouble with Lord Denholm. I just wished to ask if there was any way you could let me know to expect a drugged meal. Maybe arrange the silverware a certain way, or give me some sort of hand signal…”

Wallace was looking at him incredulously. Elze’ith’s pulse rang in his ears. “I just want to know when it is coming. Please.”

At first, Wallace was silent. Then, he laughed. He laughed. Quietly at first, then louder, until it seemed to envelop all of Elze’ith’s senses. He set the tray down on the table with a harsh clatter and met Elze’ith’s eyes.

“You think that would change anything?” There was a bitter edge to his voice. “I’m not risking myself for you, especially not for something so meaningless. Now, please. I have work to do.”

It shouldn’t have hurt as much as it did. But as Elze’ith fled the kitchen, he found himself furiously blinking back tears. He had no friends. No allies. No one who would listen to him or help him. There was only Lord Denholm and all of the discord that he had introduced to Elze’ith’s life.

A castle full of people, and he was practically alone.

My DM knows his audience and sets up plenty of adventures where the party has to rescue innocent NPCs from bad guys. This is a scene from one of our recent adventures where we had to rescue a temple acolyte who had some important quest information but had been captured by cultists. My character is on the left trying to distract him while our bard on the right has a look at his injuries.

Glitter and Be Gay- This one is so freaking funny lol. Carlos hates glitter and he suffers because of it. T.K. is amused.

How to Say Goodbye- My last NCIS LA Densi fic. That fandom has meant the world to me and I'm sad the show is over.

Love is Sitting on the Bathroom Floor- T.K. has food poisoning, Carlos takes care of him, it's so sweet!

The Luck O' the Irish- I truly love how this one turned out, my little fic about Tarlos doing a class project with their child in the future and Carlos being a neurotic dad lol.

I Won't Say I'm in Love- Carlos falling in love with T.K., Adriana and Francesca being their best/worst selves. This one has some of the best dialogue, god they're fun.

Mothers and Sons- Andrea caring for T.K. as they wedding plan. Made myself cry with this one.

Shiner- Coda for 4x15, Carlos finding out about T.K.'s black eye and taking care of him.

A Helping Hand- Lololol a fic based on my real life experience with rain and smoke detectors.

Happy Campers- Boys camping trip with whumped Carlos is just what the summer ordered!

July

We Have Suffered Enough- 4x16 post-ep. God did they really need the Huntington's scare?!

Day Zero- T.K. struggles after being drugged by Sadie.

August

Saturday Night's All Right for Fighting- This might be the best fic of the year. Mama and Papa Reyes getting into trouble at a bar with T.K. and poor Carlos having to sort it all out is the stuff my dreams are made of.

September

Rugby King- My sweet, sweet Heartstopper boys. I was so nervous writing this fic and I'm so glad I did. Whumpy Nick and worried Charlie are such perfection and it was so fun to jump into this fandom!

October

Come Sail Away- My magnum opus for this year lol. The longest thing I've written to date and a love letter to the drama and antics of Below Deck. Also my first AU! (Technically...)

November

Tío T.K.- T.K. being a freaking badass and helping Carlos' nephew. Adriana and Francesca return. A joy from start to finish.

Whump of March 2023!

i decided i'm going to experimentally make a post at the end of each month going over my favorite whump that was new & prominent that month. as a general rule i'll mostly only include series that have had at least 2 updates in the month and started fairly recently.

so, here's some AMAZING series to check out! and yes it's mostly vampires because it's my rec list and i love vampires. 🧛

Several new series by @zillastar13, all of which are included at the same link. Personal favorites are Our Man Flint, where a vampyr hunter grapples with being turned into a vampyr himself; Eden, a pet whump story where the whumpee goes stockholm fast; and Blood Sacrifices (18+), about a vampyr who poses as a god and very much abuses that position.

Things End | People Change by @whumpcloud, about a vampire whumper who's been tortured by hunters finally at the mercy of his former victim. (my favorite trope obviously)

An Earthly Cosmological Redshift by @quietly-by-myself, about a vampire mafia underboss and his lover find themselves in a dismal situation.

Poisoned Ivy by @whumpshaped, academia whump! As if whump couldn't get any more harrowing, now it involves being forced to do schoolwork. (Under the Bell Jar, about a tiny whumpee waking up trapped and alone, was also just completed!) This is one of the only two non-vampire entries on this list.

Blood Bag AU by @emmettnet, a fresh vampiric twist with a widely-beloved (now bloodbag) whumpee and his vampiric carewhumper. He's also put out some amazing art this month!

A New Beginning by @a-crumb-of-whump, about a vampire pet whumpee recovering with the now-grown child of his whumpers, isn't really new (though it's also had some great updates this month). But its poll-based spinoff Carlos & Bailey: An Interactive Story is! Now you get 2 vampire pet whumpees.

Magnanimous Moonrise & Savage Sunset (18+) by @not-a-space-alien, about a vampire being experimented on for weapons testing and the hunters who take pity on him, is in a similar boat. It's had some great updates this month along with a brand-new interactive adventure, Savage Sunset CYOA!

Pick Your Poison by @thebluejayswhump, about someone who gets lost in the woods and increasingly strange things occurring while an uncanny sense of dread rises, is another interactive adventure! The second of two non-vampire things on here.

Whumptober 2023 Masterpost

My Whumptober project: a collection of standalone stories that all take place in my Mind Games universe (full description below), a modern-day sci-fi/fantasy thriller setting with the feel of shows like The 4400, Flashforward, and Travelers.

The specific whump elements will depend on the prompt, but expect a lot of spy whump, lab whump, moral ambiguity, interrogations (because they’re my favorite), death whump (because it’s also my favorite), and so much emotional whump.

These stories fully stand alone, with no overarching plotline or even recurring characters. You can jump in wherever you like, and read only the tropes you enjoy without worrying about missing anything.

Mind Games

People with extraordinary powers are hiding among us.

They have good reason to hide.

Their abilities make them valuable to every government, corporation, and criminal enterprise on earth.

If only those abilities were enough to keep them safe…

There has always been a gene that allows a small subset of people to develop superhuman powers, from mind-reading to telekinesis to… more unusual gifts. For most of human history, that gene has remained dormant in almost everyone who carried it. But starting in the 1970s, increased air and water pollution created a chemical cocktail that could activate the dormant gene in any carriers exposed to it.

Fifty years later, governments around the world use “psi-enhanced persons” for clandestine operations, trained from childhood when possible. Scientists have synthesized a compound that activates the dormant gene—with the unwilling help of their human test subjects. Secret breeding programs are creating the next generation of operatives, designed for never-before-seen psychic strength and raised with absolute loyalty for their creators. (Results are… mixed.)

As for the ones who refuse to be used… well, a threat that can’t be controlled must be eliminated.

Small resistance groups exist around the world. Ordinary people with extraordinary gifts, doing what they can to save themselves and others like them from the people who want to kill or use them for what they can do. Their victories are few and hard-won. But every life saved makes the pain and sacrifice worthwhile.

The rest of the world has no clue about the conflict happening under their noses. Governments stay silent because they don’t want to give up their advantage. The Enhanced, as they call themselves, stay silent because revealing their existence would mean even more people lining up to control or destroy them.

Maybe someday that will change. For now, the Enhanced will take advantage of the protection the shadows offer… and so will their many enemies.

Hello, fellow whump fans! Happy New Year!

Last year I did a Whump March Madness bracket where I put whump tropes against each other and you voted for your favorites through a series of polls (you can see the 2023 winner here!). It was a lot of fun and y'all seemed to enjoy it, so I think I'm going to do it again!

I'm planning on using a lot of the same tropes as last year (with brand new pair ups of course), though there will be some new ones! However, I am definitely willing to consider other tropes if y'all have any you'd like to see!

(Though please do note that I'm doing this for y'all, but also for me--so it will be up to my discretion which tropes I choose to include. (: Nothing personal, just we all have different tastes! )

✨✨✨Summary: Stuck in a cell, in the middle of no where, Riley and Will try to survive and hatch a plan to find the guys, dead or alive.✨✨✨

Warnings: very heavy on whump, injuries, blood, ptsd mentioned, guns and weapons, self defense driven violence and killing, mentions of torture (not shown).

The guards verbally creepy off screen (but there is no non-con or assault in this - zero. So please know you will not encounter that in this fic at all. I just wanted to mention this for anyone who might fear encountering that in the story, you won’t, you are safe!)

They occasionally give them food and water, but it’s sparse and not on a schedule. The last time food was given was two days ago, based on the way the light changed through the ceiling bars. It was a narrow space, not wide enough to be a window but open enough to let in small amounts of fresh air and sunlight.

“Will,” Riley looked up at him, “the others - do you think - “

Will took a sharp breath in, “I don’t know-”

Will hopes they're alive.

He kept telling himself they are, and he just needed to get to them. To think they weren't - that hurt too damn much. He loved every single one of them, and his brother - Benny, his kid brother who he looked out for and protected his entire life- if anything happened to him -

Will felt like he failed Benny, he's supposed to keep Ben safe, and now he didn't know where he was.

In the silence, his mind went back to that moment they were torn apart. Everyone fought like hell, every single one of them, but they were outnumbered.

It was a dark room, like this without bars; guns in their faces after fists had been thrown, they fought until they couldn't anymore. Bruises and blood on both sides, the captors and the captees.

They all blocked Riley from the men, surrounding her like a protective pack of wolves. Still, they were pulled apart, one by one, kicking and screaming until Will and Riley were the only ones left. Will nearly got knocked out when he attacked the men taking Benny, he hit the ground with a thud, and a ringing sensation moved through his head.

Will faded in and out, coming to just as Riley bit down hard on one of the man's arms, tearing skin, his blood on her lips. When he hit her, she fell down and Will dragged her behind him, then putting his body over hers.

After that, his memory got spotty. From what he learned later, from Riley, he went wild- attacking both men with superhuman strength and fighting his ass off. It took a blow to the back of the head to knock him out, then everything went black. He wasn't conscious when they picked her up and dragged her out of the room.

Sometime after that, Will awoke in the same room, this time chained to the wall. He was later blindfolded, gagged, then moved. To his surprise, he wasn't alone, Riley was in there. He didn't know why they were paired up, but he was thankful. He could protect Riley, and he hoped Ben, Frankie and Santi were all together.

Will felt defeated, he had to remind himself of who he was; the call tag Ironhead was earned, he survived all kinds of crazy shit that should have killed him but didn't, including the one gunshot that solidified the name.

Will was getting Riley out of here, and he was going to find his brother - he was going to find Frankie and Santi even if he died trying.

Will knew exactly how many men there were now, the group was smaller, as far as he could tell. He knew the face of every guard, their habits and their schedules. Will counted 44 steps to the staircase, 10 descending steps, followed by a left turn: then a count of 56 steps to that fucking room.

Along with all this, the other thing churning in his mind was the why; why were they kept alive?

If their kidnappers wanted payback for Lorea, Will and the others would have been executed on the spot, or delivered to what’s left of Lorea’s men. If this was about ransom, which was a possibility, they’re being kept alive for money.

Another observation Will made was this; the men were getting lazy and too comfortable. He's taken the beatings, fought back, and watched at the same time. His time to act is soon approaching.

Evan ‘Buck’ Buckley: On-the-job-injury

Buck hasn’t been injured on the job in almost four years.  The last time he was injured was in 2x18 “The Life We Choose” after the ladder truck explosion.  The embolism he had in 3x1 “Kids Today” happened during his welcome back to the 118 party but after his recertification test when he ignored the pain he felt in his leg.  Every other time Buck has been in danger, he escaped it without serious injury.

In 4x13 “Suspicion” Captain Mehta tackled him to the ground to get him out of the line of fire after Eddie was shot by a sniper.

In 4x14 “Survivors” he was being reckless by not waiting for Bobby’s orders when he climbed up that crane to save a construction worker.  He wasn’t injured but Bobby reprimanded him and he told Buck “Don’t do it again”.

In 5x6 “Brawl in Cell Block 9-1-1″ Dom whacked Buck over the head with the butt of his gun because he approached the other escaped convict, Mitchell after Mitchell threatened to shoot him, Eddie and their son Chris but that doesn’t count as an on-the-job-injury.

In 6x4 “Animal Instincts” Buck took off on a victim’s bike to chase a drunk driver who left the scene with Chimney trapped inside of the car.  Bobby didn’t reprimand Buck after that incident.  He wasn’t injured.

The 6B trailer shows Buck being struck by lightning while he’s on top of the ladder and Eddie’s at the bottom operating the controls.  It looks like they both might be injured but the audience will have to wait until March 6, 2023 to see if one or both of them get injured.

It’s Buck’s turn on the whump wheel because everyone else has either been injured on the job and/or attacked because of their jobs. Eddie and Bobby were shot by a disgruntled former LAPD sniper in 4x13 “Suspicion” and 4x14 “Survivors” while Hen and Chimney were attacked in 5x17 “Hero Complex” by Jonah who was a fellow LAFD paramedic they trusted (not Hen because she never trusted Jonah) in the last two seasons.  At the end of season 5, it was speculated numerous times that Buck would possibly be injured during season 6 and it looks like he just might get injured in 6x10 “In a Flash”.  Will Buck be injured during 6B?  Only the showrunner(s), writers and producers know the answer to that question.
