It's becoming the norm to speak of a golden era for hot hatches. Fast, practical, huge fun and inexpensive to run; the class-leading contenders let you have it all. Yet given how long this period has lasted, it might be better to consider brilliant hot hatches as mere par for the course in 2021. There simply isn't a dud in the line-up, from Fiesta ST through Toyota GR Yaris to Mercedes-AMG A45. Buyers are spoilt for choice - and the manufacturers have upped their game accordingly.
It was into a sector only marginally less competitive than 2021's that the third iteration of Renault Sport Megane arrived. The brief was tough - to keep the old guard of R.S. fans happy while bringing new buyers into the fold - but the form book spoke for itself: Renault Sport had been the standard bearers since the turn of the century.
As it transpired, the old 280 and 300 Trophy (all models now have 300hp, and the manual option has gone) achieved as many hits as they did misses. There was a lot to like in isolation, the Renault Megane being exciting and engaging in its own way, but the fact remained that it wasn't as fun to drive as its predecessor nor as nice to use every day as a Golf GTI. Of course, it escaped no one that the former was hard to achieve while pursuing the latter.
Now, three years later, we have a facelift. And, more importantly than that, a Renault Sport facelift. Which, for whatever reason, often feel like more than the sum of their parts. A tinker of this and a tweak of that often seem to have significant influence - think Clio 197 to 200 and Megane 225 to 300. Furthermore, the Megane tested here might just be the best option in the range: the Sport chassis with that now-compulsory EDC dual-clutch gearbox. Few will mourn the demise of the obdurate manual or the stiffness of a Trophy chassis, which can be wearing on the road. If the Megane is really going to be up with the class best - the i30 N now has a DCT option as well, plus there's the Focus ST automatic - then it's most probably in this configuration.
INTERIOR
It's funny how quickly and substantially quality perceptions alter. Back in 2018 the Mk7 Golf GTI was still being lauded for the cohesion of its cabin, against which the old Megane R.S. could only offer an unresponsive touchscreen, cheap ventilation controls and awkward integration of the manual gearbox. It was far from brilliant.
How times have changed. Not only has the latest Golf seemingly dropped the ball as far as ease of use goes, but Renault’s new EasyLink system has also moved the Megane's interior on leaps and bounds. Still a portrait layout and now with a 9.3-inch display, it rights the wrongs of before: specifically, the screen responds promptly to every command and maintains the consistent smartphone connection it couldn't manage before. With more vibrant displays and user-friendly menus, in addition, EasyLink is a big step forward for the Megane.
That's not the only thing, either. Those scratchy, unsatisfying controls for the air-con have been upgraded to weightier, higher-quality knurled dials, again a noticeable improvement and vastly preferable to the weird VW sliding scale. The R.S.-branded 'Multi-Sense' drive mode button - cycling through Comfort, Normal, Sport, Race and MySense - has been enlarged and repositioned from the dash to the transmission tunnel. Again, it's another small point that improves usability - it's far easier for your left hand to reach now, and no longer means the hazards might be pressed by accident.
Though Renault offers Recaro seats (and, it says, a 20mm lower driving position as a result) as an option on the Trophy, there's precious little cause for complaint in the standard ones. They don't look as racy, sure, but are well-sited, decently supportive and plenty comfortable enough. Perhaps the driving position isn't beyond improvement - the pedals are a little offset, and more reach adjustment would benefit the taller driver - but it is extremely competitive in a way its predecessor was not.
ENGINE & GEARBOX
The Megane is unique in its segment for using just 1.8-litres to make 300hp. Most rivals deploy 2.0-litre engines, and the Focus ST offers fully another half a litre of swept capacity from its 2.3-litre Ecoboost. For the Renault, a bore of 79.7mm and a stroke of 90.1mm means 1,798cc in total, with 300hp at 6,000rpm and 399.97Nm at 2,400rpm - as per the previous model, and competitive in its class. The closest rival on paper would be Hyundai's i30 N DCT, with 280hp and 391.83Nm.
Interestingly, given the hot hatch trend, the Megane only uses six gears for its dual-clutch automatic - all other rivals have seven, and the Hyundai goes with eight. The seven-speed is used in the Alpine A110 with the same engine isn't rated for the additional torque. It makes the R.S. a tad busier on the motorway than might be expected, cruising at little less than 3,000rpm, and can't aid fuel economy either - the official combined is 33, which is the same as Honda's more powerful, manual-geared Civic Type R.
Furthermore, although the six-speed auto is broadly speaking a decent gearbox - and comes with nice shift paddles - it isn't without fault. In the sportier drive modes, it's too keen to both hold a gear and kick down, making what might just be a spirited drive feel a lot more frenetic than it needs to. It's prone to indecision, too, and can change at inopportune moments. There are fewer issues in normal conditions, so it's often preferable to take manual control with the paddles for driving a bit quicker - their size and travel make them satisfying to use and the gearbox is responsive to fingertip requests. In the Sport and Race modes, kick down and the automatic upchanges are disabled, too. It's another welcome touch for enthusiasts that aren’t replicated everywhere.
The Megane's engine remains as likeable as ever, performance belying its relatively modest stature. While there isn't the ultimate zeal of something like the Civic's 2.0-litre unit, the R.S. is more than willing to rev; peak torque at higher engine speeds makes it a tad less accessible than some rivals, the flipside being a more thrilling, boostier nature. An augmented induction gurgle isn't unpleasant, especially when complemented by a very vocal set of exhaust pipes. Many have tried (and most have failed) to get the right mixture of civility and silliness from hot hatch exhausts in recent years - none have done it better than Renault.
In terms of raw performance, the numbers are again competitive: the Megane will reach 100km/h in less than six seconds, and reach beyond 257.5km/h. There's never any desire for more, truth be told.
CHASSIS
In a world of increasing chassis configurability - optional dampers on an Octavia vRS bring 15 different settings - it's refreshing to see Renault Sport's confidence in a passive suspension set up. Buy a Sport and you get that chassis; buy a Trophy and you get the Cup chassis - 10 per cent stiffer overall with tweaks to springs, dampers, anti-roll bars and bump stops. There's no chopping and changing. You'll get 19-inch wheels as standard, too; the Sport comes with 18s, though this test car had larger rims optioned on - as most buyers will.
Now, a good passive chassis can be great - superior even, if its compromise is neatly struck. Trouble is a bad one can be a pain in the... well, everywhere really. Which was the old Trophy's issue, really, and it would be a surprise to find it any different this time around - inspirational in the right surroundings and doubtless a boon on circuit, but pretty tough the rest of the time.
For road use, it's hard to argue against the Sport chassis. If not as supple as the good old days, but neither is the Megane punishing, it blends comfort and control really well. Even on the optional, larger wheels you'll not curse it on a motorway journey, nor bemoan its lack of composure on a B-road.
In fact, the R.S. 300 Sport is, broadly speaking, a lot of fun when the road goes from major to minor. The oft-criticised 4Control rear-wheel steer remains standard fitment and, though still not the most intuitive, the system does seem to work better in conjunction with the slightly more accommodating Sport chassis. It's still sharp off centre, albeit not quite as darty and unnerving as previous Trophys. It helps no end that the rest of the car radiates poise - hydraulic bump stops really are handy on a craggy country lane - in the finest French tradition.
What a shame, then, that so much of the hard work is almost undone by the lack of a locking differential. No doubt the Megane was more exposed than usual in miserable January conditions, but to offer a 300hp, front-wheel drive car of any kind with only an open diff (the Trophy's Torsen isn't available on the Sport) seems like madness. Where rivals would dig in and redeploy torque somewhere useful, the Sport pushes wide with one tyre messily spinning up. The Perfohub front suspension, chunky 245-section Bridgestones (on the 19-inch wheel, otherwise 235) and well-sorted traction control do a good job, with far better purchase than might be expected - but ultimately they're fighting a losing battle. This means at those points where the Megane looks set to go from very good to even better, the hardware (or lack thereof) lets the side down.
For those eyeing up the Megane as a Golf GTI alternative, perhaps a traction deficit at the handling limit isn't the end of the world. On the other hand, a limited-slip differential could be on the options list for keen drivers that would make a precious little difference in everyday driving - certainly not in a way that stiffer suspension or a louder exhaust might - while unlocking the best from the chassis. There's little to complain about in the braking department, with 355mm discs up front, and 290mm behind, the former being clamped by Brembo callipers. In that typical Renault Sport fashion, the initial pedal feel is a little soft, but there's decent feel and performance once into the meat of the travel.
COSTS
The current crop of hot hatches is hard enough to separate on the road - and it's much the same on paper. The new Megane RS range begins at R633,900, which will likely lead some to throw up their hands. But consider this: the first Trophy launched in 2005 at R397,000 allowing for inflation that's R596,000 today - that’s not a big difference. Compared to the Renault Megane price, which starts at R325,900 at Group 1 Renault, it seems excessive, but consider all the ‘extras’ you’ll get.
This particular Megane R.S. 300 Sport was R716,360 with extras like the Flame Red paint, 19-inch wheel upgrade, Alcantara upholstery and heated seats. For reference, the last Golf GTI we tested was optioned toR768,793, and the Civic R738,314. Beyond a panoramic sunroof, there isn't anything more to add to the Renault. Smartphone mirroring with the big screen, a 10-inch TFT driver display, BOSE stereo, LED lights, reversing camera and a suite of active safety technology is all standard. That the latter never saw fit to intervene speaks to how well it's integrated.
The older design of dual-clutch means the Megane might be a little more expensive to run than some rivals. A less powerful Golf GTI is officially 5mpg and 25g/km better off, and a Focus ST automatic is said to be capable of 40mpg. Furthermore, as the Megane nudges over 190g/km - depending on wheel size it's 191 or 192g/km.
VERDICT
By and large, this latest Renault Sport Megane update achieves what you'd like every facelift to do: address weaknesses while leaving what was good untouched. So it's still the best looking car in the class, plenty fast enough and apparently built in a way that will dispel all your old French quality myths. In addition, a markedly improved interior makes it more appealing both in the showroom and in day-to-day use - to look at and to sit in, the Megane does feel good as well (if not better than) anything else in its class. You'd be very happy to see this parked on your drive, and that counts for a lot. A Civic Type R might not sit so well in suburbia.
Your priorities will ultimately dictate where the Megane lands in the final pecking order. Those after the best hot hatch to drive are still better served by the Honda, which is more capable overall and just as engaging in its own way. It shouldn't be forgotten, either, that the rear seats and boot are also more accommodating. 
Nevertheless, this latest R.S. 300 remains a deeply impressive and - perhaps just as importantly - exceptionally likeable car. It's a richer, more rewarding experience than anything currently built on the MQB platform, a nicer place to sit than a Focus ST and a real pleasure to drive briskly. Sebastien Ogier has grabbed the lead from Toyota team-mate Elfyn Evans in the Monte Carlo Rally on the third day of this year’s World Rally Championship opener.
After Friday’s action, Ogier had lost half a minute following a puncture on the penultimate stage of the day, although he immediately reclaimed 16 seconds from Evans before the overnight halt.
Restarting in the dark in order to comply with local COVID-19 legislation, Ogier then resumed his imperious progress on the opening 18.3km La Bréole – Salonnet stage.
The Frenchman crossed the line 17.8s faster than the Welshman and 20s faster than anyone else in the rally.

It was a masterclass and even the usually business-like Frenchman was wide-eyed with the adrenaline coursing long after he cleared the stage end.
With Ogier leading Evans and the third Yaris WRC of Kalle Rovanpera, Toyota’s grasp on the event was further strengthened by a disastrous stage for its nearest challenger, the Hyundai of 2019 WRC drivers’ champion Ott Tanak.
The Estonian had been hanging on grimly through Friday’s stages but his Saturday run began with a spin that was followed by a puncture which sent him hurtling down the order.
Dawn had broken before the start of the second stage of the day, the 20.48 km Saint-Clément – Freissinières test, and Thierry Neuville brought some cheer to his beleaguered Hyundai squad by firing in his first stage win of the event.
Last year’s Monte winner had struggled throughout the opening days as he and newly-installed co-driver Martijn Wydaeghe sought to find a working relationship.
On stage 10, however, Neuville hit form by setting a time 42.2s faster than Ogier’s and closing up on the third placed Toyota of Kalle Rovanpera in the overall order.
Any good cheer that Neuville’s stage win brought to Hyundai was soon tempered by the sight of Tanak stopping on the stage with another blown tyre. Having already used the only spare on board his i20 WRC, the Estonian’s event was over.
After a short service break the crews returned to La Bréole – Salonnet for the final stage of the day, where the Toyotas once again asserted their authority. This time Evans was the winner by a scant 1.3s from Ogier – but it was enough to cheer the Welshman.
“I needed that really,” Evans said. “It’s been a bit of a frustrating day, really, just not really been on the money… we’ll keep the pressure on!”
Ogier was unperturbed and holds a 13.0s advantage as the teams prepare for four stages on the final day.
“The condition have changed a lot since the first pass and also since the gravel crew have passed so it was a little of what we see and try to trust it,” he said. “But it was a clean drive for me.”

Neuville’s scintillating form did not continue into the final stage of the day and this bought Rovanpera some breathing space at the overnight halt, with a 7s gap opening between them.
“I had a problem with my earplugs so Jonne [co-driver Jonne Halttunen], had to scream all the time so I could hear the notes,” Rovanpera explained.
“I didn’t hear the notes so well so maybe at the beginning I was not so comfortable but then when I get used to the result it was okay.”
The battle for the final podium position is now more than a minute clear of Dani Sordo in fifth place at the wheel of the third works Hyundai.
The Spaniard had struggled on Friday but his pace improved dramatically on Saturday morning before suffering again on the day’s final stage.
“I was just very slow,” he said after setting only the 15th fastest time through the final stage.
“We need to bring the two cars to the end of the rally so the only way is we go a little bit slower than before but it was very bad.”
In WRC2, the day delivered another big chunk of time to veteran Andreas Mikkelsen, who holds seventh place overall and a 2m14s advantage over the M-Sport Ford of Adrien Fourmaux, with Oliver Solberg third for Hyundai.
“We drive again comfortably, very tricky conditions, but my information is really spot on. I have the best gravel crew in the whole world.” Mikkelsen enthused.
In WRC3, Yohan Rossel enjoyed another solid day, maintaining his lead over Yoann Bonato and Nicolas Ciamin.

Former World Rally Championship runner-up Jari-Matti Latvala has been appointed team principal of the Toyota Gazoo Racing squad, as the team confirms its full 2021 line-up.
With Tommi Makinen stepping down as team boss at the end of the 2020 season to become Toyota’s motorsport advisor, Latvala will move into the team principal role having been selected by Toyota president Akio Toyoda.
Latvala will “bring a driver’s perspective” to its management team of project director Yuichiro Haruna, sporting director Kaj Lindström, and technical director Tom Fowler.
Toyota also confirmed an unchanged driver line-up of seven-time WRC champion Sebastien Ogier, 2020 runner-up Elfyn Evans and rising star Kalle Rovanpera.
Last month, Ogier confirmed he had delayed his WRC retirement plans to stick with Toyota for at least 2021.
Latvala, WRC runner-up in 2010, 2014 and 2015, joined Toyota in 2017 as one of its drivers on its return to the championship and produced a stunning start by finishing second in the Monte Carlo Rally opener and winning the second round in Sweden.
The 35-year-old Finn only stopped full-time WRC competition this year when he was shuffled out of Toyota’s driver line-up but has acted as a team ambassador this year and is relishing his new role.

“I am really honoured to be taking on this position with the team, and by the trust that Akio Toyoda has shown in me,” Latvala said.
“I’m really excited to continue the work he started together with Tommi, having been a part of this team from the beginning as a driver.”
“Now, as team principal, I have to see the bigger picture: I have to motivate everybody in the team to work together to achieve the best results. It’s a new challenge and I’m up for it.
“Tommi has done a fantastic job with the team, building it up from zero and bringing the success that he has. There is always room for improvement and I want to use what I have learned over the years as a driver and work together with the team directors to make this team as successful as possible.
“The 2021 season is just around the corner but the entire package is already there within the team, with a proven car and the same strong driver line-up, and everybody knows what needs to be done to prepare for the Monte Carlo Rally in January.”
Toyoda is delighted to see Latvala remain an integral part of Toyota’s WRC efforts and is confident he can make a smooth transition from driver to team principal.
“It’s been a year since we gave Jari-Matti a send-off from the team as a driver,” Toyoda said. “And now, I’m very glad that I’m delivering this message again.

“When thinking about our new team from 2021, Jari-Matti’s face first came to my mind. That’s because there were many situations in which I empathised with him since we met.
“He always thinks of the fans and of his team-mates. Being one of the top drivers, I often saw him running up to fans as soon as he got out of the car at the service park.
“He cared about everybody in the team like mechanics and engineers and always talked to them. I believe this kind of attitude and character empowered the team a lot and helped lead to the manufacturers’ title.

2021 Toyota Yaris Cross Small SUV Official Video Released
Toyota Yaris Cross will go on sale in Japan later this year before reaching Europe; based on TNGA-B platform as Yaris supermini
Toyota was supposed to host the global debut of the Yaris Cross at the 2020 Geneva International Motor Show but the cancellation of the even due to obvious reasons you may already know has led to the brand conducting the premiere online a couple of days. The Japanese manufacturer has released an official video showcasing the features and the detailed idea behind the new model.
The compact crossover is based on the Yaris supermini sold in the international markets and is first intended for the Japanese and European markets. It will go on sale in Japan later this year before reaching the Old Continent. The five-seater has a similar wheelbase length of 2,560 mm as the Yaris but the relatively longer greenhouse comes courtesy of it being longer, wider and taller.
The Yaris Cross sits below the C-HR in the brand’s SUV lineup and it does have noticeable design changes compared to the Yaris hatchback. Moreover, it could act as a desirable alternative to the rather eccentric styling presented by the C-HR. It is more versatile and practical compared to the supermini as it has better interior space and a 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat arrangement.

To attract modern day young customers, Toyota is offering a range of accessories and optional packages as well as features such as electric tailgate, 18-inch wheels, Brass Gold paint scheme, height-adjustable and split cargo floor, belt system for carefully securing the objects, etc. It has plenty in common with the Yaris in terms of mechanicals and powertrain.
The Yaris Cross is powered by the same 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine working in tandem with an electric motor forming a hybrid system. The total system output stands at 116 horsepower and the IC-engine has an appreciable thermal efficiency of up to 40 per cent. The petrol mill has a dedicated front-wheel-drive mode but generally, the power is transferred to all the four wheels through an AWD configuration.
When the going gets tough and the traction conditions are poor, the sensor will analyze the situations and make the AWD system do its part. The production of the Yaris Cross takes place at Toyota’s base in Valenciennes in France and it intends to sell more than one and a half lakh units across the globe per year. In FWD trim, it has claimed CO2 emission rating of less than 120 g/km and the AWD configuration emits below 135 g/km of CO2 on WLTP cycle.

Toyota anuncia investimento de R$ 1 bilhão no Estado de São Paulo
Nesta quinta-feira (19), o Governador João Doria acompanhou, ao lado do Rafael Chang, presidente da Toyota no Brasil, e Masahiro Inoue, CEO da empresa para a América Latina, o anúncio do aporte de R$ 1 bilhão na fábrica da empresa em Sorocaba, no interior paulista.

Vale destacar que o montante será usado para a fabricação de um novo modelo para o mercado brasileiro, com previsão de venda em 2021. A expectativa é de que 300 novos empregos, diretos e indiretos, sejam gerados na região em função do investimento.
“Mais uma grande conquista do Estado de São Paulo com esse novo investimento da Toyota de R$ 1 bilhão e geração de 300 novos empregos, dando sequência a uma série de resultados na captação de investimentos internacionais”, salientou o Governador.
O anúncio ocorrido nesta quinta-feira (19), em Nagoia, no Japão, é o segundo feito pela companhia japonesa, neste ano, para o território brasileiro. Em abril, Rafael Chang, presidente da Toyota no Brasil, visitou o Palácio dos Bandeirantes, em São Paulo, e afirmou que a companhia investirá R$ 1,6 bilhão na planta de Indaiatuba, para a fabricação a versão híbrida do Corolla, com motor elétrico e tecnologia flexfuel, considerado o mais limpo do mundo.
“O compromisso da Toyota com o desenvolvimento da indústria automotiva brasileira e com o Brasil só é possível com uma parceria forte entre os vários stakeholders da empresa. Esse anúncio de mais um investimento que fazemos no Brasil é o resultado do trabalho conjunto de nossos colaboradores, fornecedores, concessionários, sindicatos e o governo e reforça nossa visão de longo prazo no País”, ressaltou Masahiro Inoue.
Montadora em São Paulo
A primeira operação da Toyota fora do Japão foi estabelecida no Brasil, há 61 anos. A empresa tem três fábricas no Estado de São Paulo, em Sorocaba, Indaiatuba e São Bernardo do Campo, além de um centro de distribuição de peças em Votorantim. A companhia também possui 236 concessionárias distribuídas pelo País.
Em 2018, a Toyota foi a segunda maior produtora de automóveis no território brasileiro. Desde 2013, a operação no Brasil também exporta automóveis para outros seis países da América Latina.
Em agosto, a Toyota celebrou sete anos de sua fábrica de Sorocaba, a terceira unidade produtiva aberta no País. Fruto de um investimento inicial de US$ 600 milhões, a instalação é um marco nas operações da fabricante de veículos no Brasil, pois reúne atributos das plantas mais modernas da Toyota em todo o mundo.
Indiretamente, a unidade de Sorocaba induziu novos investimentos no Brasil, seja da própria marca ou de fornecedores. O parque de fornecedores localizado ao lado do terreno da unidade abriga onze empresas.
A Toyota, como resultado da boa performance de Sorocaba, decidiu construir sua planta de motores em Porto Feliz (SP), com investimento de R$ 580 milhões. Essa instalação produz os motores 1.3 e 1.5 litro, VVT-i, que equipam o Etios e o Yaris e, desde o mês passado, também fabrica o novo motor 2.0L Dynamic Force, que equipa o Novo Corolla 2020.
São Paulo e Japão
Desde 1973, o Governo de São Paulo já assinou 21 acordos de cooperação com o Japão em setores variados, como segurança pública, meio ambiente, desenvolvimento econômico e educação, entre outros.
No Brasil, a comunidade japonesa conta com mais de 1,6 milhão de pessoas. Desse total, 1 milhão vive no estado de São Paulo. A cidade com o maior número de japoneses fora do Japão é a capital paulista, com mais de 350 mil imigrantes do país. Já os cidadãos brasileiros no Japão são cerca de 180 mil.
