Despite less cargo space, the Kona gets a nod and a wink for a low load floor and a wide, squarish rear opening that makes loading cargo a breeze. Both the Kona and Tucson put a priority on safety with standard automatic emergency braking. The larger Tucson takes the standard active safety tech a step further with active lane control, which is extra on the Kona. Oddly, theKona offers a head-up display but the Tucson does not. The Tucson can be had with a surround-view camera system but the Kona does not. Fortunately, both models can be had with blind-spot monitors and adaptive cruise control.

The Kona’s look is newer and edgier than the Tucson. Despite the Tucson’s age––it will be redesigned for 2021––the mid-sizer has a refined and adult-like design that won’t offend, or embarrass, anyone. The conservative but handsome exterior complements the simple if not boring interior. If the Tucson is the adult then that makes the Kona the teenager going through some awkward years with mismatched details, two-tier headlights, fake vents, and complicated body lines tacked onto a lifted hatchback. Inside, the Kona is like the Tucson with a logical cabin layout and easy-to-use controls, but there are flourishes like orange or green accents on top-trim models akin to a mohawk on a teenager.

The 2020 Kona and 2020 Tucson are powered by a 2.0-liter inline 4 with a 6-speed automatic powering the front wheels. The Kona’s version makes 147 horsepower while the Tucson in SE or Value trim gets 161 hp. Most Tucsons get a more powerful 181-hp 2.4-liter inline-4, while Limited and Ultimate Konas comes with a 175-hp 1.6-liter turbo-4. The base engine is a better fit in both of these people movers as the 2.4-L doesn’t add much power while the Kona’s turbo-4 comes with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that gets confused and feels hesitant at city speeds. All-wheel drive is an option on both the Kona and Tucson for $1,400.

Konas cost just over $20,000 while the Tucson is $4,000 more. Both are similarly equipped with standard cloth upholstery, 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, air conditioning, and power features. Hyundai’s plan was to make it feel more like an SUV, and I think they’ve succeeded. The Santa Fe XL is still on sale at Group 1 Hyundai, according to the consumer website, but this car is really bordered, sizewise, by the bigger Palisade and the smaller Tucson in the company stable.

I like the new face of the brand that’s now also on the Kona, Venue and Palisade though I can see it being polarizing.

As for ride and handling, the 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe was fine. Bumps were well muted and control was relatively direct. I do remember driving it into some DEEP water on the first drive, like 20-some inches, and made it out.

The 2020 Santa Fe's HTRAC all-wheel-drive system, available on all trims, defaults to front-wheel drive until slip is detected. Then it can send up to 50 percent of the power rearward. In sport mode, it starts at 65 percent front, 35 percent rear and varies from there.

Hyundai Tucson too small? Palisade too big? The 2020 Santa Fe sits right in the middle.

The 2020 Santa Fe interior is as ergonomic as you can get with knobs for climate and volume and tuning, cupholders that are next to the gear shift, and not behind it, and, well there’s a tacked-on looking screen on top of the dash that I don’t love, but it is easy to sneak a look at while driving without taking your eyes too far off the road.

Our 2020 Santa Fe Limited comes standard with leather seats, dual climate control with four-way lumbar adjustment, ventilated seats along with heat and memory, the 8-inch nav screen, surround view monitor and a few other things.
