DRESS WHITES
An installation at The Met recreates a closet from the Greenwich Village studio apartment of Sara Berman.  Berman was born in 1920 in Belarus, emigrated to Palestine in 1940, and then to New York in 1953.  From 1982 until her death in 2004, she stored her her all-white wardrobe, as well as other loose possessions, in a single walk-in closet, on two hangbars and six rows of narrow wood shelves.  Her wardrobe consisted of: ten or so pairs of trousers, twenty or so shirts, ten or so sweaters, stacks of folded socks and underclothes, two wool scarves, two wool caps, one pair of gloves, a cotton bathrobe, three plastic wristwatches and, on the floor, seven pairs of flats with their toes pointed outwards.  The housewares stored inside include: linens, towels, an iron, a globe, a white wood serving tray, a steel casserole, a set of painted ceramic mugs, a small stack of letters, and about a dozen books.
All these things are fine and lovingly cared for, but they are not luxurious, and they are not sentimental.  They are remarkable instead because Berman selected and displayed them with such care.  Stacks of tshirts and underpants are folded precisely, as if for sale, each pile sitting an inch away from the next.  Shirts are ironed and buttoned, facing front, with an inch left between each hanger.  The things contained in this closet, shockingly few in number for a contemporary American, are all of what Sara Berman needs.
Berman’s closet isn’t monastic; it offers its own kind of opulence.  With the pieces inside it’s possible to craft a great number of ensembles, spanning seasons and occasions.  Her closet might be as rich in fashion possibilities as Nan Kempner’s famously overstuffed ones.  A small photograph of her on the gallery wall shows her in white coat, shirt and trousers, with a mens striped necktie, looking naturally, elegantly and eccentrically chic.  This closet, filled with her personal effects, could have been understood as a memorial.  Instead it speaks, strongly, to her love for herself and her love for her life.

Greasers: A Brief History
Being fans of The Outsiders, we’ve become pretty familiar with the term ‘greaser’ and some of us might identify with it ourselves. But where did greasers come from? What was their inspiration? Their history? Well hold on tight because I did some digging around for you all.
Tumblr media
The term greaser actually originated in the mid-1800’s as a derogatory term for Mexican immigrants who greased carts for a living.[1] From there the term evolved to apply to auto mechanics, but the negative connotation still lingered. What we know as a greaser developed in post WWII America, though they didn’t adopt the nickname until the 50’s. With their oily hair, love for cars, and defiant attitude, the term greaser fit them well.[2]
The style and attitude of the greaser has it’s roots in motorcycle culture. The first motorcycle clubs were founded in the 1930’s but the subculture really took off in the late 40s, early 1950’s. With leftover bikes and military clothing from World War II, motorcyclist dressed themselves in combat boots, aviator sunglasses, and duty caps. Combined with greased hair and leather jackets along with working class staples such as tshirts and blue jeans, the bikers cultivated a look that the greasers will eventually adapt.
Tumblr media
The biker attitude was another aspect that inspired the greasers. The Hollister Riot of 1947 created the long running stereotype of the ‘Outlaw Biker’. What started out as a small disturbance in a southern Californian town blew out of proportion by the sensualization of the media. In a time when conformity and normalcy was an important part of American culture, anything different was seen as just that, different. The bikers were portrayed as being out of control, practically terrorizing the town, and this reputation was passed on to all other bikers as well. The Hollister Riot inspired the 1953 Marlon Brando film The Wild One, which not only is known as an Outlaw Biker film but also a greaser film as well. This apparent disregard to authority was one of the core principles in the greaser culture.[3]
In the 1950’s greasers really started to make a name for themselves among the teen crowd. Inspired by the new age rock’n’roll music, having is disregard for American conformity, and fueled by pop culture icons, teens started to break loose. Adopting the biker style they wore leather and denim jackets, a myriad of tshirts from bowling shirts to just plain t’s. On their feet they often wore motorcycle, army, or cowboy boots or the classic All Star Chuck Taylors. Blue jeans and leather pants were the norm. They greased and slicked back their hair in a billion different ways including pompadours, ducks ass, s-curls, finger waves, and even combed back styles, each greaser having their own signature way of styling.[2]
Tumblr media
Greaser crowds were first notably spotted in poor urban areas, often among working class kids of Italian and Hispanic heritage. Along with the term greaser they were often called hoods, referring to the poor neighborhoods in which they lived, often of which had higher crime rates than upper-class areas. These kids, with their similar sense of style and backgrounds usually formed gangs, participating in their own criminal acts, from simple pick pocketing to murder and gang violence. [1,2]
Not all greasers lived in a city, greaser culture was found all throughout the United States, mainly perpetuated by the pop culture of the time. Rock’n’rollers like Eddie Cochran and Elvis Presley embodied the greaser look. For Elvis’ third film, Jailhouse Rock (1957), his character’s wardrobe was based heavily on that of Marlon Brando’s in The Wild One. Movies played a huge role in greaser culture. Blackboard Jungle (1955) featured urban greasers, even greasers of color, and made history by being the first film to feature a rock’n’roll song, Rockin’ Robin by Bill Haley and the Comets. James Dean popular film, Rebel Without a Cause (1955) shows two different types of greasers, the stereotypical biker-styled teen and those who dressed representing their working class status, wearing tshirts, blue jeans, and the red jacket Dean forever immortalized. [2]
Tumblr media
Throughout the 60’s the greaser image faded, until its revival in the 70’s. By then the greasers of the 50’s were adults looking to relive their youth, or at least remember the old days. Grease, the musical, debuted in 1971, while the film adaptation was released in 1978. The hit tv show Happy Days, a portrayal of stereotypical 1950’s family life, aired from 1974-1984 and featured it’s own version of the greaser with the character Fonzie[2]. Though the days of the greasers may be long gone, their image is still one ingrained in American memory and pop culture.
