- If you don't indicate (in x reader fics) what stage of the relationship the reader is in with the character(s), I will automatically assume they are already dating

- There is currently no character limit, but don't go silly with it lol (10 is probably a good amount but it depends)

Hey if you wanna talk about Talking bodies I would love to hear your thoughts.

Of course! [warning: this got quite long]

Talking Bodies is a story about friendship, sex and the interplay between them, power dynamics and how the best intentions can lead to unintentional hurt. It’s about communication, both done well and poorly.

It’s also a story where we are exploring characters’ psyches, motivations and actions through explicitly sexual content. Which, in my opinion, can be just as valid as say, exploring them through a beautifully written angst piece, or a ripped from canon missing scene story. I original labelled this as a ‘pwp’, porn without plot fic but ultimately, that doesn’t really fit, given it does have a storyline, even if it is centred more around the characters’ interactions before, during and after a sexual encounter.

(Also, I often see on tumblr people implying smut fic is an inherently inferior species of stories and so posting it was a rebuttal to that view in some way.)

Anyways…

This was my first time writing a Ty point of view and going into it, I was very aware of the stereotypes around autistic people and sex. As much as possible, I tried to either steer clear of them, write the opposite for Ty or give context/refer back to canon why he does something in that way. For example, autistic people being seen as non-sexual/childlike/uninterested in sex; given he is the instigator for the threesome, clearly that’s not the case. In this story Ty is confident in his sexuality and very much knows and is able to articulate his sexual preferences and also ask/check in with his partners about what they want. (the benefit of ageing up characters too- you can give them more life experience)

Ty is also the dominant partner in most of the sex scenes but it doesn’t mean he’s uncaring or unfeeling (another autistic stereotype) and there are several references where in his internal monologue, Ty is worried about how his actions will be perceived, which I feel is kind of… both a meta comment but also his lived experience as an autistic person.

Also- his ‘plan’ to help Ellie is a very much a plot point in this story, and while this might feed into the stereotype of autistic people being rigid and needing plans/structure, I think inherently it is a part of Ty’s personality and so giving context as to why he did it - initially to cope with Ellie disrupting his and Kit’s routine and then eventually coming to care about her and wanting to help so he researched/devised a plan of action - was my way of addressing that stereotype.

It also doesn’t mean he isn’t able to adapt because as this fic shows, he’s growing and learning to recognise his blind spots.

A sudden revelation flooded through him, of having been here multiple times before. Not exactly this situation- but similar, in trying to get Mark to replace Julian as head of the family, or his attempts to raise Livvy, or his and Kit’s relationship when they had first reconnected - of trying to find a straightforward solution to a morally grey or uncertain problem when there wasn’t always one. But maybe… just maybe, Ty thought, as Ellie blinked back her tears and smiled, he was getting better at realising his limitations.

The above section really is the thesis of the story, when it comes to Ty. In a kind of tragic way- Ty’s insight into Ellie and how to help her isn’t actually incorrect but it falls down in execution. Not because it’s inherently a bad plan but because Ty didn’t communicate it in the best way, and he didn’t account for variables like human nature, which- hey, we’ve all been there, right? Particularly for those folx who are neurodiverse.

A few other points:

Kit - I have to admit, Kit is more of a cipher in this fic. I’ve had commenters on Ao3 question why he didn’t anticipate Ellie’s reaction, given they’re close friends and well… I think it’s combo of him trusting Ty, feeling helpless watching Ellie deal with her problems, and all three of them living in close proximity where, as established by Ty, and acknowledged by Kit and Ellie - they all are sexually attracted to each other. I may be drawing on my own experience here but umm, early 20s and the freedom it provides means there can be A LOT of sexual experimentation and lines being blurred between friends and sexual partners.

Ellie - Ellie was initially an original character from my Kit-in-Devon novella Effortless and like many writers, heh, once I started writing her, I grew attached and developed Plans. In Effortless, she is Kit’s ‘the ride-or-die BFF’ and is a foil / counterpart to him, always having his back but also calling him out on his BS when it’s needed. She’s also older here and has had things happen to her, and in them Ellie and Ty share commonalities/instincts, particularly in how they decide to deal with their respective traumas - ie. recklessly and a bit selfishly. Ty recognises that, and well - that’s part of his attraction to her. Like calls to like etc.

There’s a lot more I could say about Ellie’s character and her storyline in my wider ‘London Files’ universe but this analysis is already hella long. But I love exploring a character who had the choice to become a Shadowhunter, and who rejected it - but is still fascinated by the Downworld and even the Shadowhunter lifestyle - so, what are the options in her case?

Kit/Ty/Ellie dynamic - Even as the writer of this fic, I’ve gone back and forth as to whether they would have worked as a triad past this one time. In canon there’s parallels of Kit = Watson and Ty = Holmes, and much like John Watson/Sherlock Holmes is a great pairing, I think something extra kicks in when you add someone else (whether it’s Mary Watson, Irene Adler or whoever) into that Holmes/Watson dynamic and I think the same holds true to for Kit / Ty.

But at the end of Talking Bodies, it’s not going to currently work because unlike their sexual dynamics (where it’s very much fluid), their positions outside of the bedroom are unequal ie. Ellie as a mundane living in a Shadowhunter household. Imo, this wouldn’t lead to a healthy dynamic if they decided to pursue it at this stage. But if they decided to revisit their relationship in the future, Ellie recognising she needs to establish her own place in the Downworld is a step forward to having them all meet again on a more even footing.

The sex - This fic incorporates a lot of aspects prevalent in the BDSM and kink community. While I don’t think it’s a fic writer’s responsibility to always address these sexual preferences in a safe and realistic way, I also think it’s possible to depict hot scenes where negotiation/consent is being obtained, and also- where the Dom is aware of the power they hold over the sub. See below:

But it was the middle of the night and Ty was still tired while also becoming increasingly turned on, and he wanted to ensure that he hadn’t misunderstood. He switched his position so he was still pinning her one-handed over her head. He placed his free hand on her cheek and gently forced it over so that she could see Kit. Then he drew her attention back to him and bent his head down so she could see him clearly.

“What do you want, Ellie? You have to tell me. Ask me specifically what you want me to do,” he said, in a soft but clear tone that he knew would carry over to Kit. He released her hands and sat back so that his weight was off her and she could leave the position if she wanted.

Also, while I will continue to headcanon that Ty and Kit respectively fall into Dom/sub dynamics, I also think like many people who engage in kink, there is flexibility in these roles for them, which is why I wrote the different iterations of Ty topping Kit / Ellie topping Kit/ Ty topping Ellie / Ellie and Kit together topping Ty.

And that it’s also meant to be FUN and sometimes silly and actually sometimes they still mess up (like Ty’s bruises on Ellie) but it’s not the end of the world as long as they’re talking it through.

There are also some things I could say about sex and particularly r*ough sex and using it as distraction/way of coping with trauma but uhmm, this is already quite long and I also don't want to risk my tumblr getting flagged. But I have Thoughts, mostly along the lines of - I don't think we should tell people how they choose to address their trauma and their healing journey.

Three Missed Calls at 2 am

Word Count: 1.7k+

A/N: This is my first ever writing and I’m super nervous to post this but here it is!!! I wrote this all in one night and I stayed up way too late to finish it but it was worth it bc i’m lowkey super proud of it! Hope you enjoy! Also I’m so bad at endings so sorry that the end is so shitty in advance

Summary: You blacked out one night and you may or may not have drunk-dialed your best friend and confessed your love to him

Admittedly, you didn’t make some of the best decisions of your life last night. In all honestly, you barely remember it. It started off with you and your girlfriends taking shots and once they headed to the dance floor, you stayed back and took a few (a lot) more by yourself. After that, everything was black until you opened your eyes to the sunlight flooding your living room the next morning. Head pounding, you let out a frustrated moan, annoyed that you keep letting yourself do this. You try to roll over but, not realizing you’re on the couch, you roll right off and land on the hardwood floor. Too tired and hungover to care, you curl up on the hard ground with the blanket that your girlfriends placed over you. They also took off all your makeup and made sure there was advil and a large glass of water on the table next to the couch. You already expected this since they’ve done the same treatment for the past few days whenever you come home so drunk you don’t even remember your own name. They think you’re just stressed out and need something to take your mind off everything so you’re constantly intoxicating yourself. You know the real motivation behind it but you’d never tell them because if you did, they wouldn’t let you leave the house again. Instantly regretting curling up, you attempt to stand up but as soon as you put any pressure on your left foot, sharp pains shoot up your leg. You manage to crawl onto the couch and notice a note next to the water and advil.

Good morning Y/N! Hope you enjoyed the 15 shots you had last night that made you black out! You went a little too wild on the dance floor and twisted your left ankle. You couldn’t walk at all so we had to leave early. Ellie carried you home while the rest of us made sure you didn’t puke on anyone or anything. Thanks for making us carry you home for the third time this week! Really appreciate it. Anyways there’s extra pancakes in the fridge and Natasha cut up some strawberries so those are in there too. Try to take it easy and don’t put pressure on your ankle. Take your advil and drink a shit ton of water. Don’t plan on going out again any time soon. Your ankle and your liver need a break. See you tonight. -Tina

You roll your eyes while you swallow the advil and down the rest of the water. “Really appreciate it.” Fuck off Tina you’re acting like we’ve never had to carry your drunk ass home from drinking too many dollar margaritas or when we had to go to ER to get your stomach pumped after Julian broke up with you? Grow the fuck up. And “Don’t plan on going out again anytime soon.” Excuse me? Who the fuck are you? My mother? Ugh.

You go to check your phone and once you realize it’s dead, you also realize that you have to somehow get up the stairs to get to your charger in your room even though you can barely walk. Such a great start to the morning!

It takes you ten minutes to cross your living room, go up the stairs, and across the disgusting mess your room is, trying not to twist your other ankle while you step over the piles of dirty clothes, bags, and any other belongings that line your floor. You plop onto your bed and plug in your phone, waiting for it to turn on. As you lay there, you hear the deadbolt to your apartment unlocking and the fast paced thuds of boots heading towards your room. The door to your room opens and you see it’s your best friend. He’s visibly frustrated and his chest is rising and falling quickly under his shirt.

“Hey Ash, what’re you doing here?” you ask him groggily.

“Why the fuck do you think I’m here?” He responds, slamming the door shut.

“I don’t know, you wanted to check up on me to make sure I didn’t die last night?”

“Oh, I know you didn’t die last night.” He snaps back.

“Well that’s good, right? Here I am! Alive and well! Kinda!” The frustrated look on Ashton’s face isn’t going away. “What’s going on? Did I do something?”

“Yes you fucking did something, Y/N.”

“Well obviously I don’t know what I did so would you just tell me?”

Ashton rubs his temples with forefinger and thumb and looks at the ground. “Have you not checked your phone yet this morning?”

“No. It was dead and I just came up here to plug it in.”

“Maybe you should check it.”

You keep your eyes on him as you reach for your phone. You check your notifications but there’s nothing that seems urgent enough for your best friend to burst into your apartment to confront you about it at ten in the morning.

“Ash I don’t see anything what’s going on?” You search for any answers in his eyes but you can’t find anything.

“Check your call history.”

You immediately check it and see that you called him three times last night. “So I called you a couple times in the middle of the night, what’s the big deal?”

He tilts his head back in frustration. “Do you not remember calling me?”

“No. I blacked out at like midnight. What’s this all about?”

“So you called me while you were drunk.”

“Yes I just told you that I was out by midnight and these calls were at like 2 am.”

“You know what happens when you call people when you’re drunk.”

What the fuck happens when I call people when I’m drunk?

After giving Ashton some confused looks, he exhales sharply, looks at the floor, and then looks you right in the eye. “So are we’re just going to ignore the fact that you drunk-dialed me to tell me you love me?”

Fuck. You just stare at him, unable to form a sentence. Did you really do this? The one thing you’ve been always dreaded doing?

“I-I did?” you manage to stutter out. He pulls out his phone and plays one of the voicemails you left him.

“Heyyy Ash! I’m at the club right now with El, Nat, and Tina and I maayybe had a few too many drinks. But don’t tell them! I don’t want them to get mad at me. Uhhh anywayss I just wanted to let you know that I love you a lot. Like a lot. I know that I tell you that alllll the time but like I really mean it this time, okay? And it’s like more than just as a best friend, ya know? cause like you’re my favorite person on this whoolleee entire planet and I don’t think you know. I mean, you might, but I doubt I would’ve told you this when I was sober. But you know what they say! Drunk words are sober thoughts! So yeah uh I’m in love with you and now you know. Yay! I can finally get that off my chest. That’s been sitting there for like two years so I’m glad I don’t have to worry about that anymore. Okay I’ll probably see you tomorrow because you always check up on me in the morning which is so nice by the way and just one of the reasons why I’m so in love with you. Okay! I love you! Byeee!”

You just sit there in utter disbelief, listening to your drunk voice coming out of his phone. This can’t be happening this can’t be happening this can’t be happening this can’t be happening.

“Now do you know why I’m here?”

All you can do is nod. Tears start to well in your eyes as the recording shuts off.

“I have two more just like that. Want to hear those too?” you can hear his voice raising.

“I don’t need to hear anymore.” you burst, stopping Ash from embarrassing you again. “I’m sorry.” This is it. This is how I lose my best friend. Over one stupid drunk phone call. Why the fuck did I have to do that?

He turns around and slams his fist on the door, making you jump. His head hangs down and he takes a deep breath.

“God Y/N, why the fuck are you like this?” He turns back around to look at you. “I know that you drunk-dial your exes and any of the guys you flirt with on tinder... but me? Why me?” Your heart breaks at your best friend’s words and it breaks even more as your eyes meet his, filled with hurt and confusion. There’s no helping it now as tears drip down your face and you can see his eyes are tearing up too.

“Ash I’m-“ you begin, but he puts his hand up to stop you. He walks over, narrowly avoiding twisting his own ankle as he sits down on the bed next to you. His breathing is heavy again and you can see his lip quivering slightly. To your surprise, he takes your hand in his, interlacing your fingers. He gives your hand the slightest squeeze.

“Why is your hand so sweaty?” you can’t help but let out a small laugh. “No but seriously why? Am I making you nervous?” His mouth curves into a slight smirk, knowing exactly what your answer is. He takes a deep breath and meets your eyes with his hazel ones again. “I always told myself that I wouldn’t fall in love with my best friend, but here I am.” Wait what? You turn to him and now it’s your turn to look confused. What is he talking about? He isn’t in love with you. He can’t be. That’s impossible why wo- his words cut off your thoughts.

“You remember when you surprised us on tour in LA?” you nod in acknowledgement, eager to hear where this is going to go. “Well that’s when I knew I was in love with you. You were so understanding about everything and you didn’t complain once. Okay except for that one night when we got back in the middle of the night and we were really loud and obnoxious and we woke you up and you were mad. But you got over it once I said I would come cuddle with you so you could fall back asleep.”

You smile at the memory, it was one of the best nights that you spent on tour with them. The two of you cuddled together in your bed that was definitely not made for two people. You were smushed but comfortable. His body heat kept you warm and you fell asleep safely in your best friend’s arms.

“And as I was laying there, I realized that there was no one else that I wanted to be with but you.” Tears immediately start to roll down your face as a wave of emotions washes over you. “I love you, Y/N.” He flashes his beautiful smile at you and you can’t help but smile yourself.

“Say it again.” your words came out more desperate than you wanted.

“What?”

“Say it again. I want you to say it again.” You’re practically begging him.

“I love you, Y/N.”

“I love you too, Ash.”

“Also, just so you know, I’m going to be keeping those voicemails and using them to blackmail you in the future so be prepared.” He says with a smirk.

“Um, no you’re not because those are getting deleted right now.” You laugh and then lunge to grab his phone but end up collapsing on top of him, both of you laughing and fighting for his phone because if any of this was up to you, those recordings would’ve already been deleted.

The (not so) Secret History

A confession: this is my first Donna Tart book… and maybe my last one. Not because I didn’t like The Secret History (I enjoyed it), but because her books are long, and plot-ish, and because, well, these days I feel that if I grab a book with more than 500 pages it should be a classic, hopefully one of those that make me guilty for not having read them before (right now: Middlemarch). So yes. The Secret History surpasses my “500 pages” rule, yes. But it is not solely about the pages. I felt that deep down Donna Tartt wants to be a writer from another era, but at least in this one she finally wrote the only book she could have written: a contemporary one. A brainy one. But even though The Secret History oozes Greek mythology and 19th fumes it’s a modernist piece of literature. In fact, The Secret History starts with maybe one of the biggest spoilers in literature: the first thing we found out is that a character eventually dies. And so whatever we read from now on it has been processed by time and memory. The Secret History as an anti-crime novel; and there you have it - what more modernist than start with the end?

“The snow in the mountain was melting and Bunny had been dead several weeks before we came to understand the gravity of our situation.”

But does it matter? How important is that beforehand we know what will happen? My answer is that not much. Because that’s what the book actually tries to do. Something along the lines of: “now you know who died, but we have 500 pages ahead of us, care to join me anyway?” So that’s the tricky part of The Secret History’s size. If we know how the book will end, do we still want to invest our time in it? Again, my answer would be yes, of course, because plot is just one part of literature. The other is the voice; that is, who’s talking to us, readers, and how the story is narrated:

“I suppose at one time in my life I might have had any number of stories, but now there is no other. This is the only story I will ever be able to tell.”

And also never underestimate the reader’s craving for gossip. We might know who dies at the end, but –hell, yes– we want to know who did it, and how. In this case is the “we” referenced at the first line of the book.

“We” is a group of six students living in a very privilege environment: an American liberal art college. It is a book that comes from Salinger’s teenager angst but at the same time it elevates the angst and frames it differently (all those highbrow references). Also it is a crime story. And a campus novel, I guess, which makes this book a lot of things. Richard Papen transfers from some college in California, if I’m not wrong, to Hampden College in Vermont. Over there he tries to continue his study of Ancient Greek; thus he meets professor Julian Morrow, who leads a very unique study group. The group includes fraternal twins Charles and Camilla Macaulay, as well as Francis Abernathy (whose secluded country home becomes a sanctuary for the group), linguistic genius Henry Winte, and lowbrow Bunny Corcoran.

If you have never been to an American liberal art college this is a book that will give you an interesting insight of that. But if you have, then this book will confirm whatever you already know: booze, drugs, sex, and so on. Yes. Youth is wasted on the youth. But with one exception: that the group, the “we”, truly believes in arts, literature, food, drinks, and whatever valued by the Greeks. They are not the classical undergrad kind of type. That’s what enthrals Roberto about his classmates: “…it was as if the characters in a favorite painting, absorbed in their own concerns, had looked up out of the canvas and spoken to me.”

I loved the first 300 pages of this book. It was fast. It was fun. I heard and saw a lot of what Richard experienced during his arrival. Then it got a little muddy. I started to hate some of the characters. I didn’t feel like hanging out with Camilla, Charles, Francis, Henry, and (even less) Bunny anymore. So much waste of money, knowledge, time, and youth. In that sense, I must admit, the book accomplishes something interesting. We become part of the group because first we like them from afar. Then we become friends or at least acquainted with these people. Then we get to know them deeply, and have fun: drinks, a line of cocaine here and there, late night talks about poetry, life, love, etc. Suddenly we understand all those differences; we are not that similar to these guys. Maybe we are too close. After that it is inevitable: we might probably hate them, or at least some of them (so preppy, so white and privilege, so much knowledge that leads to nowhere!) and as well, as a humane consequence, even start secretly loving them (I must admit that I fell for Camilla.)

By the page 300 it had lost the effect caused by its first chapters. I felt that I was reading Bret Easton Ellis plus Apollodorus’ The Library of Greek Mythology. And plus: I knew that one of “they” would die, but we were not getting close to the “but how and who did it?” Still, Richard’s voice and his observations were good, maybe a little too good for a teenager in his early twenties. During certain moments I felt Tartts puppet master’s hand handling the strings and making him remember in such a vivid way that made me doubt (wasn’t he on drugs and lacking sleep most of the time?)

Underneath the whole “campus” and assassination, The Secret History explores beauty and death; and how those two mingle together even though most of the time we deem them as separate forces. That’s what stayed with me from this book. That being alive is beautiful, but also dying. As a consequence, we must learn to live and appreciate both.

“And it’s a temptation for any intelligent person, and especially for perfectionists such as the ancients and ourselves, to try to murder the primitive, emotive, appetitive self. But that is a mistake” “Why?” “(…) Because it is dangerous to ignore the existence of the irrational. The more cultivated a person is, the more intelligent, the more repressed, then the more he needs some method of channeling the primitive impulses he’s worked so hard to subdue. Otherwise those powerful old forces will mass and strengthen until they are violent enough to break free, more violent for the delay, often strong enough to sweep the will away entirely.”

Review & Wrap-Up:

This adaptation of Cinderella is not going to be what you expect it to be. It is more of a hide-and-wait love story than it is a run-for-your-life story like the synopsis suggests its going to be.

While the story is kind of a reverse adaptation of Cinderella, with Ashley’s mother dying, Ashley is left with her step-father and step-brothers, who are cruel and mean. But from here, the connections to Cinderella stop - that is other than Ashley finding her prince charming!

Ashley’s step-father has made it his mission to take Ashley as his wife, and he will do anything to make this happen. Naturally, Ashley doesn’t want to be married to her cruel and vicious step-father, so she runs away to her Godfather, Gus, who helps hide her away from him. It is in hiding that she meets Julian, her not-so-friendly knight-in-shinning-armor.

With Julian, Ashley sits and waits. Either for her step-father to find her or for the FBI to finally get involved and take him down for his crimes.

I guess I should have seen it coming that Fragments of Ash was going to have almost zero action in it based on the cover, but I’m not one that likes to judge a book by its cover. And while I did find the beginning to be a little boring and fluffy, I did enjoy the read. It was interesting, because I could see the shift in the book while I was reading. I could tell that author Katy Regnery enjoys and is a lot more comfortable writing the meat of the story, and not so much with the beginning or history behind the story. The beginning was not only a struggle for me to read, but I believe a struggle for Katy to write.

Once you hit that turning point (which is right around when Julian’s sister comes to visit), the story takes off running and was an easy, fun, and flirtatious read with a dash of angst. I enjoyed the book so much from here that I have found myself thinking about the characters a few times since, something that only good books can make a person do!

If you’re looking for a dark but flirty twist of the old tale Cinderella, then pick up a copy of Fragments of Ash!

I've been wanting to write something about Humphrey for a while now (well, he plays a part in chapter 5 of This place (I never thought would feel like home) but that doesn't count lol) so I'm looking forward to writing this for you! I'm not sure in which direction I will go with this yet because there are quite a few intriguing possibilities. My first thought was to write something with Thomas, perhaps referencing the football / volleyball scenes. But then my mind went to Sophie because there's a lot of angst potential there. And then I thought Humphrey saying this to Jean could be interesting since apparently I can't stop putting random characters together lol.

So I guess we'll see what you're going to end up with on May 25 😂 You're always welcome to tell me what you prefer, though! Or if there's something else you'd like to see.

Sorry to hear you've been under the weather, I hope you're feeling better! I really like your collapse idea for Thomas, would you like to do a WW where he feels faint? He seems to have been prone to it in life (and really wanted care and attention for it, judging by the probably-a-fantasy bit where concerned women rush to mop his brow when he nearly faints after his poetry reading). With everything he goes through physically and emotionally, there are plenty of reasons it might happen.

I'm always up for doing a WW fic about Thomas, especially if it's such a lovely prompt! 💙 Writing something in the tags always feels a bit like screaming into the void so knowing that people not only read those tags but actually feel inspired to send an ask afterwards is really lovely! And ngl, I'm quite excited to be able to write that original idea I had in mind for the final chapter of This place (I never thought would feel like home)!
