Thought of a possible workaround for this:

You could add a crafting recipe to the forge to upgrade Berwhale, duplicating the original but making it have higher stats and naming it per upgrade standards. If you did it with standard crafting materials and the right perks needed, it would be functionally identical to using it at a grindstone, but since it’s a different item in the CK, Tally could have a unique reaction to it.

Please tell me tally will realize you honed his dagger for him when he takes it back because I'd feel really bad about upsetting him and just never sharpen it if he didn't realize I was helping

If I'm able to figure out how to get Tally to recognized you upgraded Berwhale for him, I'll add a reaction.
