TERRAPIN CLUBHOUSE, EPISODE 3: PHIL LESH AND FRIENDS (Stu Allen, Jason Crosby, Grahame Lesh, John Molo, and Elliot Peck)
I am not going to miss a chance to see PHIL LESH in these literally episodic sets, as a chance to continue to think about Grateful Dead music and as a chance to see an aging hero while I can. I had the same impulse in July 2019 when I saw basically this band (sub Cris Jacobs from Grahame Lesh) at the Outlaw Festival with Allison Krauss on To Lay Me Down and a stunning Morning Dew. Even Elliot Peck’s presence for the Estimated Prophet closer echoed Krauss.
I did not see this set straight through and there were ads (grr, but my own fault for not seeing it in the first day or so). Further, it was not a straight through performance with each tune a discrete segment (Playing in the Band>New Potato Caboose>Playin’ Reprise was a straight through jam). So these are not exactly coherent performances with magic to get lost in. But it is Grateful Dead music, so I know how to settle into it quickly.
For starters, I am relieved to find PHIL himself still doing magical things, but it has taken me some time to catch it. He’s no longer playing energetic lead bass like a Great Blue Whale diving and singing. But, particularly on Crazy Fingers and Estimated Prophet, it was there in subtle ways, interesting fills and little countermelodies. There has always been space and quiet in Grateful Dead music, so he can be quieter too.
Allen and G. Lesh capture that lilt and tone. They aren’t slavish Garcia imitators but they are clearly derivative. It’s what we want but they aren’t distinctive either. It’s fine. Vocals were rarely a high point and they still aren’t, but again they are evocative and I hear the songs, singing along in my head, rather than the performances. Peck though contributed to an appealing vocal jam at the end of Estimated Prophet.
I am really glad to be invited to this Clubhouse and to see versions of this music 59 years since the band was formed and, oh, at least 55 years since I started listening.
I like seeing it all from a soundstage, particularly in comparison to the admittedly stunning Dead Forever shows at The Sphere in Las Vegas by Dead and Company. I’m sure the band is firing on all cylinders but they are the soundtrack to the visuals and the music is secondary. But I too am accepting guitar evocations of the old days and only adequate singing.
I have in the car a CD of late 1971 Grateful Dead and, whoa, that is so strong compared to even the band itself 20 years later, much less, most of the latter day legacy bands. Lesh’s Quintet in the early 2000s and the Larry Campbell/Jackie Greene band of 2007+/- had some fire as does Joe Russo’s Almost Dead. Both were grounded in the aesthetic of the single drummer 1971-1974 Grateful Dead which is the segment of the history that I claim with the Anthem of the Sun/Live Dead era as important pre-history.
Lesh has played with John Molo for over 25 years and his drumming remains essential. He too has adjusted to the quieter version and has a jazz player’s subtlety.
I will be watching all of these (and earlier to avoid the ads). Writing about them will wax and wane or even disappear. But this time around, I found I had something to say at least to myself.
Playlist: High Time (I don’t know that I’ve seen this one performed), Playing in the Band>New Potato Caboose>Playing Reprise, Crazy Fingers, Estimated Prophet

What a weekend! I'm home from the 2024 JUNO awards in Halifax and my hamstrings are still recovering from the enormous hill that Halifax is built into... but it was an incredible experience! The red carpets, the awards dinner, the broadcast, and more - it's a surreal experience to be in a room with hundreds of other people knowing that every single of them is an absolute badass on stage, while simultaneously being such a wonderful experience when there's not an ego in the room - everyone, big and small, came to the table friendly, open, and supportive. It was both inspiring and heart warming.
Nick Maclean Quartet feat. BROWNMAN ALI didn't win our category, but I'm very honoured to have lost to Hilario Duran and his Latin Big Band, who's Grammy-nominated record "Cry Me A River" is just spectacular! In fact I'd have felt honoured to lose to any of the giants who were nominated alongside us in our category - I was surrounded by my heroes and mentors. Heros like:
Hilario Duran & His Latin Big Band - "Cry Me A River" Allison Au & The Migrations Ensemble - "Migrations" Canadian Jazz Collective - "Septology" Mike Murley & Mark Eisenman Quartet - "Recent History"
I had an enormous amount of fun catching up with folks I haven't seen in ages like Noam Lemish, Mike Murley, Denielle Bassels, Caity Gyorgy, Levi Dover, Jenna Marie, and Andrew Jackson.
As well as meeting or reconnecting with new friends like Allison Au, Jocelyn Gould, Laila Biali-Wittman, Hilario Duran, Ben Wittman, Jon Maharaj, Will Bonness, Iman Habibi, Ewen Farncombe, Alex Bird, Mark Limacher, Markus Floats, James Goddard, Jhamiela Smith, and Begonia.
And I know I'm forgetting tons of people because the weekend was more than a bit of a whirlwind!
It was so good to spend lots of time with my bandmates Brownman Ali & Jacob Wutzke (Ben Duff we missed you buddy!), and my amazing wife Erin Brooks who was our on-the-ground publicist! ---- Please check out our JUNO-nominated record, we put a lot of ourselves into it! https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_k8a0AJeeXYIVCwLJs6fa9EkRErdSLo9bs NICK MACLEAN QUARTET feat. My Senior Soundtrack - Playlist
Tumblr media
Written by Jen Moglia. Graphic by Allison Thompson.
At the end of this month, I’ll finally be graduating high school. Typing that sentence definitely felt surreal.
Years and years of hard work and stress, with some not-so-bad times mixed in, will culminate in the moment I’ve been waiting for for as long as I can remember. I had been told countless times that senior year would be easy and that high school would consist of the best years of my life, and while I did enjoy a lot of it, there were also some incredibly difficult times, especially this year.
What follows is a list of songs that got me through some of those darker moments. I hope that they can be there for you too.
“Roses” - Watsky
Favorite Lyric: “Leaving is supposed to be hard / Man, I thought it so was selfish of people I love to keep falling out of my life / But now I know / No, I don't take it personal”
This was a song that I connected with a lot when making decisions for college - did I want to move away and start a new adventure on my own, or did I want to stay home with all the people and places that I knew and loved? Listening to these lyrics helped me feel better about my decision to move away for school, learning that I wasn’t selfish for wanting to start fresh.
“Never Grow Up” - Taylor Swift
Favorite Lyric: “And you can't wait to move out someday and call your own shots / But don't make her drop you off around the block / Remember that she's gettin' older too / And don't lose the way that you dance / Around in your PJs getting ready for school”
Taylor Swift is one of my favorite artists of all time, and this song has been hitting particularly hard for me lately. For as much as I can’t wait to start this next chapter of my life, there’s so much about home and my family that I’ll miss more than they will ever know.
“Boston” - Augustana
Favorite Lyric: “She said ‘I think I'll go to Boston / I think I'll start a new life / I think I'll start it over / Where no one knows my name’”
Augustana’s most popular song, I listened to this track a ton when I was first starting high school, dreaming of running away someday. The fact that that day is almost here is crazy to me.
“Swim” - Jack’s Mannequin
Favorite Lyric: “You gotta swim, swim in the dark / There's no shame in drifting / Feel the tide shifting and wait for the spark / Yeah, you gotta swim, don't let yourself sink / Just find the horizon / I promise you, it's not as far as you think”
Another song that I loved in my late middle school/early high school years, this band and all of Andrew McMahon’s projects in general have been staples in my Spotify library for years. This track in particular served as motivation for me to keep going during hard times.
“North Hansen” - Bearings
Favorite Lyric: “I've got dreams, I've got needs / I've got things I believe / That I just can not let go / I still, think about you every single day / I still miss that old North Hansen Home / Sometimes I wanna go home / All I'm saying is the ending scares me every time / Your words replaying / Over and over I save them in my mind / Now I'm grabbing a hold / Of what's about to unfold”
On the flip side, Bearings has been a huge part of the last few years of my high school experience; their 2019 tour with Grayscale, Belmont, and Rich People was the first tour I ever did multiple dates of, and those days and nights I spent traveling and singing my heart out truly changed my life. I leaned on this band’s entire discography during my junior and senior year, but this song specifically reminded me that it’s okay to be scared of leaving home as the future approaches.
“Ribs” - Lorde
Favorite Lyric: “This dream isn't feeling sweet / We're reeling through the midnight streets / And I've never felt more alone / It feels so scary getting old / I want 'em back / The minds we had / How all the thoughts / Moved 'round our heads”
How could I make a “coming of age” playlist without this song on it? Lorde has been a big part of my life for a while now - her hit song “Royals” was the ringtone on my first Smartphone in fifth grade, and I saw her live for the first time on the night before my 15th birthday on her Melodrama World Tour in Brooklyn, New York. Much like the last song, this track perfectly captures the fear of the future and getting older.
“Atlantic” - Grayscale
Favorite Lyric: “This place feels more and more like nowhere to me / I'm sick of waiting for a fire to ignite / I could just leave here without a goodbye / I'll burn down this bridge / And set my life up in smoke...I want to go / Run from this panic / I need the unknown”
As I mentioned earlier, attending four dates of Grayscale’s Nella Vita Part One Tour and six dates of the album cycle in total (bringing me to a grand total of ten times seeing this band) was a formative experience for me. Getting to end every night screaming the lyrics to this song, once again, dreaming of starting a new life as soon as I could, was cathartic.
“City Lights” - Emblem 3
Favorite Lyric: “Caught up in those pretty city lights / Wishing on a star for your direction / Thinking of a new and different life / Babe, I know this one ain't what you've been dreaming”
I choreographed my “senior solo” in my dance class to this song, one of my favorites for many years. Although I have a feeling it’s about someone moving thousands of miles away to chase dreams of stardom rather than moving two hours away to attend college, it certainly served as a source of comfort for me.
“Play” - Rich People
Favorite Lyric: “Because I know I'm beautiful enough / For someone to love / I don't know many things / But I feel everything / And I'm just too young to give up”
Rich People is my favorite band of all time, which you probably already know if you follow me on social media, and getting to watch them perform and connect with them was a major part of why following the Nella Vita Part One Tour was so pivotal for me. This song is my favorite off of their most recent album “Harmony”, and my graduation cap will have these lyrics in frontman Rob Rich’s handwriting on it later this month. This band and this song mean everything to me.
“Dream Envy” - Rich People
Favorite Lyric: “It's no way to live / Sitting on the fence asking myself ‘what if?’”
Another Rich People song, no surprise here, this is one of my favorites from their first release, “Jacob’s Ladder.” It reminded me that “sitting on the fence asking myself ‘what if?’”, is, indeed, no way to live, and it pushed me to make definitive decisions, leaving no stone unturned.
“Something Bigger Than This” - Trophy Eyes
Favorite Lyric: “I'm still flying through my twenties / Waiting for someone to say I made it / Golden boy, tiny paycheck / Big ideas and broken heartstrings / Waking up in the same old skin / It ain't easy to believe / We were born for something bigger than this / It don't make much sense right now / But it will all come together when the lights go out”
I saw Trophy Eyes live for the first time at the start of my sophomore year at the Stereo Garden in Patchogue, New York, leaving my last-period algebra class early to attend their show with Neck Deep, WSTR, and Stand Atlantic (sorry, Ms. Sloane). Their music has resonated deeply with me since then, and this song has especially been a huge source of motivation for me when I was feeling down about myself.
“Forevermore” - The Maine
Favorite Lyric: “Never really ever felt this type of vulnerable / Don't have to hide, don't have to fear / All you have to be is here...And I said, ‘I wanna feel like this forever’ / Even if forever's just for now / We're on fire, let us burn / As the outside world, it turns / We are here and alive / In our corner of time / Forevermore”
The Maine is another band that I feel has been here for me for as long as I can remember, remaining in my daily rotation since the summer before high school started. This song, off their most recent album “You Are OK”, has reminded me that wherever I am is exactly where I need to be at that point in time and to embrace every single moment.
“Flowers on the Grave - The Maine
Favorite Lyric: “Feel the moment all around you / And the quiet that surrounds you / The time you have is sacred / Don't wait around and waste it / They can't take that away from you / Everything is temporary / Even the sorrow that you carry...'Cause you don't plan life, you live it / You don't take love, you give it / You can't change what is written / So when fate cries, you listen / And flowers on the grave / Of the child that I used to be”
The first time that I saw The Maine was at the New York City date of their “The Mirror” tour at Webster Hall. When they closed with this song, I was near inconsolable; my friends were practically passing me around to hug me and make sure I was alright. Similar to the last song, this track reminds me to live life to the fullest and not take anything for granted, not wasting any time mourning the past and only looking towards the future.
“Old Book” - Real Friends
Favorite Lyric: “It really weirds me out / Because I never thought I'd be where I am today...This isn’t where I want to be / Getting older scares the shit out of me”
On the topic of bands that were constants for me in my formative years, Real Friends was one of the first pop-punk bands that I truly loved. I wore a shirt with their “The Home Inside My Head” album cover on it on my first day of high school, and their 2018 show with Eat Your Heart Out, Grayscale, and Boston Manor at Irving Plaza in New York City was one of my first real general admission concerts; I don’t think I’d be where I am today if I didn’t go to that show. This song  always served as a reminder that I wasn’t alone in my worries about the future, and that it would all be okay, even if I didn’t know what I was doing or where I was going.
“Satellite” - Rise Against
Favorite Lyric: “We'll come clean and start over / The rest of our lives / When we're gone, we'll stay gone / Out of sight, out of mind / It's not too late, we have the rest of our lives...This is a life that you can’t deny us now”
Four years ago this week, I saw Rise Against for the first time, opening for Deftones at Jones Beach in Wantagh, New York with my dad; at the end of July, I’ll get to see them kick off their latest tour at Pier 17 in New York City with one of my best friends. If that isn’t a full-circle moment, I don’t know what is. Rise Against is one of my favorite bands of all time, and their music has always made me feel strengthened and empowered. This song specifically inspired me to reclaim my own life, not letting anyone else determine the outcome and my mindset but myself - it’s also the perfect angsty soundtrack to a fresh start.
“Something Special” - A Will Away
Favorite Lyric: “‘Pull out your clothes / You're made for something special’ / If that's what it takes to get you out of bed / You think you're meant for California / But that's just in your head / I saw you howling at the street lights / Pressed against the skin you want to shed / You tore down all the walls for answers / And found this shit instead...Don't let the poison that surrounds you / Stifle out the life you want to live / Please know it truly doesn't matter / And truly never did”
Though I’ve been listening to them since my sophomore year of high school, A Will Away is a band that I really got into this year as a senior. “Something Special” is my favorite song off of their album “Here Again”, and while I know it wasn’t written about finding friends that feel like family, rejecting negativity, and starting a new chapter, that’s certainly what it’s about for me.
“Lead Balloon” - Vanna
Favorite Lyric: “This isn't how we die / You're not reading the ending right / You are meant for greatness / Open up your eyes and face it / Now to your feet and follow me / The road is hard but you're harder / Can't you feel your heartbeat starting?...You're weak but you can feel now / Your soul slowly getting out / You are so strong / And you'll have to carry on now / Cause I know that you know how”
Vanna’s “All Hell” was an album I discovered around this time last year, and I listened to it non-stop for all of summer 2020. It became one of my favorite records ever (and not just because of the pink aesthetic, though I do appreciate the use of my favorite color). When I was struggling a lot during the first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic in more ways than I could count, this song really helped me through, these lyrics in particular. It gave me hope that I’d make it to the end of my senior year celebrating, which, thankfully, I did.
“Give Yourself A Try” - The 1975
Favorite Lyric: “Won’t you give yourself a try?”
While the lyrics of this song are a bit odd, frankly pessimistic, and hard for a teenager to relate to, its catchy, more optimistic chorus served as a mantra for me throughout my last few years of high school. If I couldn’t take a chance on myself, why would anyone else want to? This song’s refrain sparked a ton of self-love in me, and I spent many nights dancing around to it in my bedroom. Also, I couldn’t leave this band off of this list - I’ve been listening to them since their self-titled LPs came out when I was 10 years old, and the album that this song is off of, “A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships”, is one of my favorite records of all time.
“Garden Song” - Phoebe Bridgers
Favorite Lyric: “I don't know how, but I'm taller / It must be something in the water / Everything's growing in our garden...She told me my resentment's getting smaller / No, I'm not afraid of hard work / I get everything I want”
Much like A Will Away, Phoebe Bridgers is an artist that I had known of and had recommended to me for years, but I only really started listening to her as a senior in high school. “Kyoto” and “Would You Rather” are probably my favorites by her, but this song, along with “It’ll All Work Out”, helped me through feeling scared for the future and wondering how I grew up so quickly.
“Growing Up” - The Maine
Favorite Lyric: “We'll never lose what we had...Growing up won't bring us down / Graduate, what's a kid to do now? / Get away, yeah / We've got so much to prove / 'Cause it's time to move on / And I start to let go...We're in this together / Yeah, we'll make it somehow / Nothing's gonna stop us now”
Finally, to close it out, one more song by one of my favorite bands ever, and one of the bands that carried me throughout my senior year, as well as all of my high school years. I had to include this one - my graduation pictures were captioned “graduate, what’s a kid to do now?” At its core, this is a song about holding on to childlike energy and teenage memories despite growing up and moving on. Every time I listen to it (which has been a lot, lately), I’m reminded that I have the best friends in the world who have given me some of the happiest years of my life, and that doesn’t have to end just because we’re getting older. “Growing up won’t bring us down.”
For more songs like this, you can follow my Spotify playlist titled “senioritis” here.
Congratulations to everyone who is celebrating this month, whatever you might be graduating from!

Blue ain’t your color - Part 6
Dedicated to @talkaboutartassholes @imanationalphenomenon and the Vitan playlist <3
In which a date is arranged.
“You don’t seem fine.” Sutan gently rubbed his thumb back and forth, trying to make Violet relax, his mind racing as he tried to figure out what was different from the last time they had done this.
Sutan: Hey, are you awake?
Violet: Yes, why?
Sutan smiled and leaned back into his chair. It was a little after eleven, and Sutan was pretty sure he was the only person left in the office, not that he minded. His days often going by in a blur of everyone and their mother needing something, so it was nice to have the place to himself, giving him time to think, even though his thoughts wandered to a certain black haired woman.
Sutan: Dinner at Annisa tomorrow?
Violet: Can’t. Busy.
Sutan wrinkled his brow. Busy? It had been two days since Violet had practically snuck out at the crack of dawn, and even though they had texted, they haven't actually seen each other. Sutan stood up, getting a cigarette from his drawer before he opened the window, leaning out of it as he returned to his phone.
Sutan: Come on lovely eyes, I miss you. I haven’t seen you in two days. How hard is Fame riding you over there if you can’t go out?
Violet: I think the question is how you’re not busy, Fashion Week is in 18 days?
Sutan smiled. Fashion week was indeed in 18 days, as if anyone would let him forget it. Fame had uprooted the entire friend group, her hysteria about her autumn collection threatening to consume everyone until Bianca had told her to shut up, sit down, and eat her spaghetti.
Sutan: All sensible brands have already booked their models, even though I got a very interesting text from Raja yesterday ;) What department do you work in?
Sutan glanced over at his desk, the reason he was late laying in the stacks and stacks and stacks of portfolios he was pulling together for his darling sister.
Violet: Wouldn’t you like to know Mister?
Sutan: I’d love to know, thank you for asking.
Violet: Well keep guessing, because I’m not telling you.
Sutan laughed, Violet still holding out on him, the girl demanding to stay a mystery, but Sutan didn’t mind playing the long game. He stubbed his cigarette and closed the window, going back to his desk.
Sutan: Come over baby, please.
Violet: …. Fine.
***
“Okay so everyone listen up.” Sutan looked at his girls, Celia, Fo, Naima, Jaslene, Alison and Raven all sitting in a conference room at Elite, Sutan on the edge of the table, his glasses on, a huge stack of files in his hands. “That includes you Raven, don’t make me take your phone.”
Raven sighed but put her phone into her bag. Ever since she and Raja had gotten engaged, Raven had been glued to her phone, flashing her diamond all over the web.
“Thank you.” Sutan smiled, only just catching Raven rolling her eyes. Raven had a tendency to always toe the line, always push that little bit further, a habit she somehow still had even after years of working with him, but it was also that dissatisfaction and that fire that made her work as hard as she did, and kept his sister on her toes. “Now that I have your attention, I have the first batch of assignments and fittings for New York.”
The girls cheered, all of them excited. Sutan stood up, walking around the table as he gave every girl a file, Jaslene smiling brightly when she saw that he had booked her for Marc Jacobs, while Celia groaned as she realised that she had once again been handpicked for Adam Lipper. Sutan
“Now, does anyone have any questions?”
***
“Joseph? Your assistant said you’d be here.”
“Hi, I’m in here!”
Sutan smiled as he walked through the studio of fashion designer Joseph Altuzarra, the New York space one of his favorite to visit, the studio a perfect representation of the parisians sophistication Joseph mixed with american sexy. “I got you the measurements.” Sutan turned the corner, finding the designer and his team working on the shoe selection for the upcoming show. “and a caramel macchiato.”
“You got me coffee?”
“Of course, you’re my favorite Joseph.” Sutan smiled and handed the cup over, Joseph taking it with a grateful expression, along with the updated portfolio and measurements of Allison, one of Joseph’s favorite models to use.
“You know you could have emailed these, right?”
“I could.” Sutan sat down, taking a sip of his own coffee. “But if I had, who would show me your collection before it hits the runway?” Sutan glanced at his watch, Joseph clearly falling for his flattery. He still had a couple of hours before he had to meet up with Violet, so he leaned back, Joseph already rolling the first rack out, Sutan instantly eyeing a silver dress he knew Allison would look beautiful in.
***
“You’re late.”
It was the first words out of his mouth as he opened the door. He hadn’t meant to say it, at least not like that, but as he saw Violet stand there, it was the only thing he could think of, the woman almost two hours late.
“I know, I know, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to” Violet was talking so fast Sutan could barely separate the words, not even looking at him as she apologized. “things just got so busy at work and then I couldn’t find a-” Sutan reached forward, grabbing the front of her dress and pulling her to him, kissing her until he felt her relax.
“You’re okay, I’m okay and we’re okay.” Sutan smiled, gently running a hand down Violet’s back. “Just call me next time, okay?”
Violet nodded, completely dazed as Sutan pulled her into his apartment and closed the door behind them.
“I… Umh… I brought dessert. Since I didn’t make it in time for dinner.” Violet smiled, a little shy as she held up the dessert box, which was clearly meant as an apology. It looked delicious, but Sutan wasn’t ready to let her entirely off the hook. He helped her out of her clothes, smiling at the amount of bags she had brought with her. Some of them made sense, like her handbag and the duffle he knew had her gym clothes, but what he didn’t get was the extra tote and the overnight bag as well. He still didn’t know exactly what Violet’s job was, but as he carried the bag his suspicion that she was from the fashion department grew bigger and bigger.
“It’s work stuff.”
Sutan laughed, totally caught in his act of trying to evaluate what was in the bag. “So it’s not your portal sex shop?”
“You asshole.” Violet smiled, and Sutan relaxed, the tension from earlier gone.  “Do you want the cake or not? It’s a chocolate and hazelnut Louvre from Payard Patisserie, I even got us forks.”
“Of course I want it.” Chocolate was one of his faves, but as he stepped forwards Violet, smiling at the fact that she was no longer wearing her heels, the woman the perfect height now to overpower. “But there’s something I’d much rather have for dessert.” Sutan took Violet’s cheek in his hand, gently caressing her with his thumb as he tipped her head upwards, placing a tender kiss on her lips and Violet melted against his chest, letting him take her weight completely.
Violet  gently broke their kiss, her voice only a whisper as she played with the buttons of Sutan’s shirt.
“What do you want for dessert then?”
“You, I want you, Princess.”
Violet looked up, meeting Sutan’s eyes, her voice so low he had to strain to hear her.
“Take me then, make me yours.”
Sutan smiled and picked Violet up as if she weighed nothing, making her squeal in delight, her legs around his hips as he carried her into his bedroom, cake completely forgotten.
***
Sutan’s bedroom was just as Violet remembered it; he kept it in a modern style with green and dark brown accents. As Sutan sat Violet down she saw something, a smile growing on her face. “Are those candles? Did you light candles for me?”
“If you had been here on time, there would’ve also been music.”
“Really?” Violet looked around, feeling a little bad until she got an idea. “Sit down.”
“What?”
“Sit down!” Violet smiled as she pushed Sutan down on the bed, quickly identifying his ipod, laughing to herself when she found one of the songs she knew. The tones of “Any Time, Any Place” started playing before Sutan realised what Violet was doing, which made him laugh in surprise, delight on his face as Violet walked out to the middle of the bedroom floor, her hips slowly swinging to the beat of the song.
Violet slowly pulled her work jacket off, revealing her arms one by one before she threw the jacket into the corner of the bedroom, raising her arms above her head as she danced for a while. She could feel Sutan’s eyes burning into the small of her back at how he was watching her ass. Violet undid her hair, shaking her head a little as the long black locks fell down ber back.
Even though it was late August it was still hot enough outside for Violet not to be wearing much, so she took her time, taking off her skirt, her hands slowly and sensually exploring her body, before she turned around, a smile on her face when she saw Sutan’s expression. She knew she was good at stripping, knew it with a certainty not many possessed, but right now, right here, performing for just one man made her feel sexier than anything else she had ever done. Violet grabbed her top, teasingly almost pulling it off before she put it on again, keeping eye contact with Sutan while she finally, finally removed her blouse, the song ending as Sutan reached out and grabbed her hand, pulling her down onto the bed with him, their lips crashing together while the next number started.
***
“Fuck… How are you real!?” Sutan pulled back, his pupils completely blown before he dived down again, kissing Violet like a man desperate for air, Violet’s hands working on the buttons on his shirt, their hips grinding together to the same rhythm, Violet’s heel digging into the small of Sutan’s back.
“Please.” Violet gasped; she was aching, her panties completely soaked through, the warmth of Sutan against her only making it worse. “Please…”
***
“What do you want, baby?” Sutan smiled, moving his hips, letting himself rut against Violet, his trousers rubbing on the crotch of her soaked panties. She was so warm and delicious, so ready for his touch as she whimpered and tried to twist, working her body to get friction where she needed it most. “Do you want me to fuck you?” Sutan leaned down, kissing Violet’s neck, his body covering hers. “Take you good like I did the last time?” Violet nodded, closing her eyes, a small ‘please’ leaving her lips and Sutan smiled. Violet was a joy in bed, so utterly responsive to his touch, a little shy, but that wasn’t anything he wasn’t ready to peel from her, petal by petal until there was nothing left but raw and naked desire. “Want me to fuck your pretty pussy? Want me to fill you?”
“Yes.” Violet reached up, her nails digging into Sutan’s forearm, the sharp points hurting slightly, but he didn’t mind, not when it made him feel like a king to have Violet cling to him. “Please, yes.”
Sutan hummed and pulled back, Violet instantly getting his clue, her eyes opening and Violet reached behind herself, arching her back and unhooking her bra. She was gorgeous, and Sutan couldn’t help but make a show of getting undressed too, taking off his shirt, their eyes locked together as his hands went to his belt, Violet starring, her fingers forgotten in the wristband of her panties.
“Fuck…”
Sutan realised he had stopped, his belt open and his fly down, but with Violet looking at him like that, her skin glowing in the candle light, he had no choice but to change the plan. He had to taste her, had to eat what was so clearly offered to him. Sutan grabbed her hands, moving them away and started kissing his way down Violet’s chest, skipping past her breasts, his lips dancing over her stomach until he could grab the edge of her panties with his teeth, a smile on his lips as Violet gasped. She wasn’t the only one who had a surprise up her sleeve, and he would gladly show her all his tricks, after all, if you wanted to keep a lady in your bed, you made her come hard, and you made her come often. Sutan pulled her panties down, the scent of her filling his nose as he kissed his way up her her, his hands quickly discarding the silk material, when he noticed that Violet had gone completely quiet.
Sutan looked up at her, his lips connected to the inside of her thigh, and he realised something was very, very wrong. Violet was still, her eyes scrunched together, her lips sealed shut. “... Baby?” Sutan ran his hand over Violet’s stomach, all of her muscles tight, trying to catch her attention. “Are you okay?”
“Yes, yes I’m fine, keep going.”
“You don’t seem fine.” Sutan gently rubbed his thumb back and forth, trying to make Violet relax, his mind racing as he tried to figure out what was different from the last time they had done this. Violet had seemed so enthusiastic. Was it the candles? No, that was stupi-
“Just do it!”
Sutan’s thought were interrupted as Violet snapped at him, and he dropped her leg before he even realised when he had done, moving away from her completely.
“Hey, hey.” Sutan moved up the bed, laying down next to Violet, propped up on his elbow so he could see her, her eyes wide and almost a little frightened. He reached out, taking a chance as his hand landed on her stomach once again. “You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to with me…” Sutan watched her, shame and discomfort clear on her face, and he hated it.
“I’m sorry.” Violet smiled, a small, apologetic smile, as if she had done something wrong. “I just don’t…” Violet gestured vaguely towards her legs, “I don’t like it very much.”
Sutan let out a breath of relief. He leaned down, gently and carefully kissing Violet’s lips, her body fully relaxing as they were back in territory she was comfortable with. Sutan had realised pretty early on that few things turned him on more than a woman who was happy about being with him, the fact that both him and Raja had been ugly all through high school only making it that much more of a joy when they got scouted to model in LA and he started to get attention. Sutan loved showering a woman in gifts and attention, but nothing had ever made his stomach turn more than when he realised that a girl in college had slept with him, only because she wanted him to take her to his agency. It was the reason he never slept with models, the idea of it too close to comfort, and Sutan liked his image, treasured it and treasured his girls trust. He broke the kiss with Violet, looking at her face.
“Don’t ever apologize.”
“But I ruined the mood..” Violet bit her lip, her pearly white teeth sinking into her plush bottom lip, and Sutan felt his cock twitch.
“You haven’t ruined anything lovely eyes.”
Sutan moved his hand lower, smiling happily as Violet gasped her cunt still hot and wet. He rubbed the pad of his index finger over her, spreading her wetness, playing with her. “Nothing is ruined, lovely eyes, nothing at all.” Violet’s hand was so thin and dainty, her fingers barely the size of his pinky, and he knew his own hand had to feel so much better. Sutan dipping his fingers into her. Violet moaned, and Sutan smiled. Oh he would have so much fun teasing her, taunting her and working her right back to the edge where she would have no choice but to beg, Violet so beautiful when she begged, but then, she surprised him, Violet grabbing his wrist.
“Not like that.” Violet eyes where closed, her fingers covering Sutans as she moved, showing him what to do, her cheeks pink, her brow furrowed in concentration, her pointer finger moving back and forth, Sutan following her lead as she showed him exactly how she liked to be touched. She was gorgeous, and when she finally, finally, finally released him, Sutan went in with all he had, using his hand on Violet until he was cramping, tears running down Violet’s face from yet another orgasm.

we’re going to be friends → a self para
Who: Topher Hummel and with special guest appearances from some NPCs
Where: Multiple locations in Lima, Ohio or surrounding areas
When: This is over the course of a couple years. So. many. timeskips.
What: Just a bunch of friendship fluff with sprinkles of angst ‘cause why the hell not?
Warnings: Trigger warning for internalized homophobia, general warning for Topher rambling his ass off.
Junior Year at William McKinley - December
“Sup fuckers?” Topher called out in greeting as he entered the dressing room area through the door that opened into the student parking lot. “You’re late!” one of his drama club friends - Allison - responded as she carried props over to a table near the stage so they would be ready to go. “What the audience and Ms. Johnson don’t know won’t hurt ‘em,” he fired back with a laugh as he ducked into the boys’ dressing room to get changed. His costume rested on the nearest rack with ‘Topher Hummel - Fred’ written in Ms. Johnson’s neat handwriting. In a matter of minutes, he changed and reemerged in the main area, only to see the drama teacher herself walk in with someone he’d only seen a handful of times and only rarely interacted with, yet apparently never learned the name of. She cleared her throat to grab everyone’s attention and in a matter of moments, all eyes were on her. Well, her and the guy she’d brought along.
“For those who don’t know him, this is Shane. He’s going to help out with stage makeup tonight and tomorrow because I know there are plenty of first-timers among us who might be a little confused,” she introduced him as a couple of cheers rose up. Probably from relieved crew members or people who knew Shane way better than Topher did. “Okay, female first-timers to stage makeup go with Allison. Male first-timers go with Shane.” Just like that, she disappeared to go attend to some more last-minute business and chaos descended again as people started to file into the dressing rooms once more.
It took a few minutes before Topher got to the front of the line, but once he did, recognition seemed to flicker on Shane’s face. “Holy shit,” he laughed as Topher settled in one of the chairs that had been pulled up to the mirrors. “Topher, right?” “That’s me. And you must be Shane. Nice to finally put a name to the face.” When a quizzical look appeared on the other’s face, it served as his cue to explain, “I’ve seen you with some of my friends at games and pep rallies over the years. Plus, Ms. Johnson literally just introduced you.“ Shane fondly rolled his eyes at the smartassery as he removed a clean brush from his bag of supplies then remarked, “Well, it’s nice that I’m the one who gets to put makeup all over the star soccer player’s face.” That got a chuckle out of Topher and in turn, Shane couldn’t help but chuckle along at his own (admittedly lame) quip. They shared a few more moments of banter as the latter worked his magic and told him what he was doing as well as what to use, just in case Topher returned to the drama club for another production.
Eventually, Topher had to leave so the sophomore playing Jacob Marley could be shown the ropes. But by then, they’d already exchanged phone numbers. Or to be more accurate used a Sharpie to write their respective numbers on the other’s arm. Thankfully, the Victorian-style clothing that Topher wore as his costume covered Shane’s number so it wouldn’t stick out like a sore thumb. What mattered most is that he knew it was there, that he had someone else in his life who was just a phone call or text away. A new potential friend.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Summer between Junior and Senior Year - June
He glanced up from his phone just in time to see Maia’s car pull up outside of Hummel Tires and Lube. Topher gave a slight wave to show that he saw her before he went to go find Burt. “Hey dad, I’m going to Columbus. Maia and company just pulled up.”
“Alright, call me when you get there and when you’re on your way back,” the elder Hummel replied before he pulled his youngest in for a hug. “Say hi to Maia and your friends for me.” “Will do,” Topher promised before he jogged outside to hop in the car. “Hey there beautiful,” he greeted Maia with a kiss as he set his backpack between his legs and tried to ignore the sour taste that lingered in his mouth, a reminder that he should have felt something, but didn’t.
“Hey babe,” Maia answered with a soft smile just before someone’s rolled up straw wrapper got tossed at the back of her head from the backseat. She and Topher both turned to look at Allison and Shane, who had ducked down just in time to pretend like they were immersed in their phones all along. “Which one of you threw that?” Just like that, the two pointed at each other. “I forgot that when they’re in the car, there’s a no kissing my boyfriend policy,” she chuckled.
“You’re making us singles feel like shit,” Allison fired back with a laugh, clearly just wanting to joke around. Laughter and equally light-hearted apologies filled the car as Maia got them on the road that would take them towards Columbus. “Okay, so you three have been holding out on me all week with where the everloving fuck we’re going,” Topher started. “Columbus,” the trio answered at the same time which made him shake his head in mock exasperation. If there was anything that all of his friends had in common no matter what, it was a smartass sense of humor. Just another bond that held them together like drama united himself and Allison or dance brought him and Maia together. Hell, he’d known of Shane, but officially met him through drama. “Look around, see if you can find any context clues,” the aforementioned male piped up.
So Topher glanced over at Maia to notice that she was wearing a tie-dyed dress colored with blue, purple, and pink. Allison’s shirt said something about how she didn’t come out of the closet, she came out of the cabinets like all of the other pans. Then Shane was wearing a simple white tank top that featured a rainbow in the center and that same rainbow was painted on both of his cheeks. (”A toned down look for a make up artist,” he’d say later. “But a look all the same.”) “Wow, I don’t know guys,” Topher joked even though he’d figured it out after he read Allison’s shirt a couple of times and was now just trying to swallow his panic. “Seems like we’re going to the pride thing in Columbus.”
Cheers rose up and he fondly shook his head at the trio. “He finally figured it out!” Shane proclaimed. “But we can always do something else, okay?” Maia offered. “Hell no. I’m going to be the most badass ally and there’s no place I’d rather be,” Topher promised. He could do that, be supportive of his girlfriend and friends. But all the same, the younger Hummel got wrapped up in his own train of thought during the rest of the ride. Even when someone put on a playlist full of songs to get the quartet pumped up for pride, even as he sang along, Topher’s mind always returned to the same old reminders. You’re not gay and even if you were, you can’t be. You’re supposed to marry Maia or some other equally great girl. Sure, the evidence is fucking overwhelming, but dude, you. are. not. really. gay.
Eventually - thankfully - they arrived in Columbus and by some miracle, managed to find a great parking spot. “Okay, so Toph, I’m going to steal your girlfriend,” Allison started as the group slipped out of Maia’s car. “We’re going to look around for cool stuff on one side then you and Shane can tackle the other side? We can sound off in the group chat if we see something awesome.” Topher nodded slightly as he answered, “That’s cool. Just let us get a goodbye kiss in real quick.” They kissed and the sour taste reentered when there was no spark of love, passion, or anything. “See you, boys, later,” Maia called over her shoulder before she departed with Allison. And with that, Shane and Topher were left to their own devices.
As they wandered around after Topher called Burt to tell him about the group’s safe arrival, some idle chit-chat was made between them, but the duo remained silent for the most part. Until Shane decided to break the silence as a concerned look appeared on his face. “Hey, Topher, you okay?” he questioned. “Yeah, I’m fine. Why?” Topher responded while he tried to not look like a deer caught in the headlights. He could only hope that he hadn’t had a wistful look on his face or that he hadn’t given himself away in some other fashion. Hell, he hoped that Shane couldn’t see anything that reminded him of himself back when he was in the closet.
Shane replied, “It’s just you’re normally way more chatty. Always talking our ears off about a new story or script idea or some shit and you’ve been quiet since we left Lima.” Topher waved him off as he tried to not look relieved that the other male still seemed clueless to the younger Hummel’s mental turmoil. “I’m alright, I promise. Just stayed up too late last night.” That wasn’t a complete lie nor was it the whole truth. Ever since he’d realized he wasn’t straight and all of this internalized homophobia bullshit started, Topher had become a master at telling half-truths.
What he hadn’t told Shane was why he stayed up too late last night. During the day, it was easy to keep everything at bay by keeping himself busy. But the night was a whole different story. Unless he had something, anything else to focus on other than his own thoughts then Topher was usually treated to the same mental invasion that he’d experienced during the ride here. He mustered up his most confident look as he looked back at Shane then aimed to pull him in for a side hug. “You guys would be the first to know what the fuck is up with me, I promise.”
“Good, I’m holding you to that on behalf of everyone. Now, I smell something fucking delicious and it’s barbecue. Text the girls, tell them what we found,” Shane responded as his own arm wrapped around Topher. As Topher pulled his phone out to do just that, he found himself torn between what he should feel. Guilt at the fact that he’d just lied to one of his best friends or relief that his secret was safe for another day?
That same question was one he would go on to ask himself many more times down the road. But thankfully, more often than not, Topher found a distraction pretty quickly. And this time? It was enjoying delicious barbecue with the trio of his closest friends. Everything else could simply be worried about later.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Senior Year at William McKinley - October
“C’mon Topher,” all three of his friends pouted as they followed him out of the building and towards the soccer field. While they made their way out, they passed by plenty of posters that advertised tryouts for the Lima Theatre Guild’s winter play. Dog Sees God: Confessions of Teenage Blockhead, also known as the very same play that they were trying to convince him to audition for.
(Apparently Ms. Johnson had tried to petition the school board to let the drama club perform it and the whole thing fell on deaf ears, despite her best efforts to prove the pros would far outweigh the cons. So, she took her case to the local theatre guild and rumor had it they were eating out of her hand by the time the meeting was over. Just further proof to the drama kids that their faculty advisor slash teacher was an utter badass.)
“Guys, I told you that drama was gonna be a two-time thing. Christmas Carol and Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Topher gently reminded the trio as he turned around to walk backward so he could talk to them. Benefits of knowing the way to the soccer field like the back of his hand. Of course, the only thing they did was glance between each other in unspoken communication. Clearly they were trying to figure out who had the best shot at getting through to him.
Allison soon started, “You heard Ms. Johnson after the winter and spring plays, Toph.” He had in fact heard what she’d said when she was talking to his dad. “Your son, he just comes alive when he’s on stage. And then he breathes new life into the character in a way that’s just incredible,” Topher recited. “Exactly. You know what you’re doing. Plus, I’ll admit that I’m being a bit selfish when I say that I want someone to keep me from losing my sanity thanks to boredom.”
That made Topher snort in amusement while Maia picked up where Allison left off. “It does look great on a college application. I know that you’re practically guaranteed a soccer scholarship, but it never hurt to show off that you’re well-rounded.” Another valid point. After all, Topher had been rambling his head off earlier in the day about college applications. His attention then turned to Shane as he questioned, “Alright, what’ve you got?”
“It’s senior year, man,” Shane replied. “Plus, I’ve already read over the script and I think you’d be a shoo-in for Beethoven.” They’d arrived at the soccer field at this point, but practice didn’t start for another few minutes. “You’ve got the tortured artist vibe down pat,” he continued which made Topher nearly fall down laughing. “I’m gonna audition too. Been awhile since the last time I was on stage. Now, don’t get me wrong. I fucking love doing the make up, but it’s just been too long. I got to get back out there.”
All of that did make a return to the drama club sound very tempting, enough so that it made Topher visibly deflate. “Alright, looks like I’m auditioning for Dog Sees God,” he stated and as soon as the words left his mouth, the trio pulled him in for a group hug.
The next day saw the two of them remain true to their respective words when they auditioned. And when they got reprimanded for cheering in the library after Ms. Johnson gave them the good news the day after? That was totally worth it.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Senior Year at William McKinley - December
Even though Topher was far from an expert in parties, he had enough experience to know that there were no parties like drama club parties. Especially when it was two events combined into one. A late celebration of his 18th birthday, plus the cast and crew wanted to pat themselves on the back for jobs well done with their weekend performances. From what he saw, there hadn’t been a dry eye in the house and Topher couldn’t have been prouder of all the hard work they’d all put in.
So, they’d naturally piled into the living room of Allison’s house for the party after the Saturday show and they’d been properly showered with praises from loved ones. Topher had installed himself on the couch, sandwiched in between some of his other friends as they tried to take each other down in Mario Kart. Just as the race started to wind down, Maia called, “Topher, cake’s ready!” “Be right there!”
He lost the race, but the grin never faded from Topher’s face as he walked into the dining room then took a seat at the head of the table. As he pulled himself closer, his friends started to sing Happy Birthday while Maia carefully carried the cake in from the kitchen with Shane at her side, empty plates stacked up and at the ready. There was a piano along with music notes on the cake - a tribute to the character he’d brought to life in the play - and eighteen lit candles stuck in the upper right corner.
The song ended which served as Topher’s cue to blow out the candles. “Our boy’s another year older! Or he has been for a few days, but now it’s official!” Shane proclaimed before he pressed a kiss to his best friend’s cheek. Everyone clambered around in bids to get one of the first slices while Topher couldn’t help but reflect on how his cheeks no longer burned whenever he and Shane were in close quarters together.
It had started during the rehearsals because they were playing love interests, so naturally that called for plenty of close quarters moments. But apparently the universe really wanted to put him through the ringer. There had been no shortage of days where they were the only two members of their friend group who were available to hang out.
There had also been no shortage of days where Shane decided to recruit Topher to be his canvas for one reason or another. This in turn translated into plenty of time where only inches separated them. Which also meant plenty of time where Topher hoped his rapid heartbeat couldn’t be heard and when he lied about why he was so pink - sometimes red - in the face as his partner in crime worked his make up artist magic.
However, as time passed, Topher slowly got used to Shane invading his personal space on the regular. When his heart stopped racing at the mere thought of being close to him, that was when he knew the crush had fizzled out. Things had gone back to normal just like that. Sure, it had taken a couple of months, but there had been no need to worry after all. He didn’t have to dread the idea of telling him and no reason to tip the dominos.
Everything would be just fine, Topher reassured himself as he dug into the slice of cake that Maia had plated for him. He’d eventually have to revisit all of this, he knew that much. But for now, he was going to celebrate with his friends and just be a teenager. Everything else that demanded his attention - from his sexuality to reminders about studying for finals and preparing for college - could wait until tomorrow or even later. The present - where all of his friends were - was so much more important right now.
The party ended a few hours later and left the quartet to clean up followed by the construction of a blanket fort. (Sure, the couch was cozy enough for their movie marathon, but was it really the comfiest place to sleep?) So they naturally bundled up in blankets as the first Harry Potter movie started playing. With all of the warmth, it was only a matter of time before someone fell asleep and Topher had a pretty good feeling he’d be the first one. In true introvert fashion, the party had worn him out, except it was in the pleasant ‘I had a great time’ and deep in your bones way. His trio of friends had really outdone themselves, so he figured that his presents for the upcoming holidays should reflect how much he appreciated it.
But that would just have to be added to his agenda for tomorrow because all of the blankets and warmth from his friends were doing nothing to help him stay awake. “Night guys,” Topher whispered. “Goodnight birthday boy,” the three of them chorused. A tired laugh escaped as he shook his head then proceeded to fall asleep, surrounded by his three closest friends.
