I’m not sure when things started to change between Eddie and me. We've been friends for a while, hanging out after school, talking about everything from Dungeons & Dragons to heavy metal. We joke around, complain about the crazy world around us, and escape to our own little bubble where things just make sense. But lately? It feels different.

Eddie’s always been a little flirty with me. It's just his nature. He’s got that sarcastic charm that comes with being an all-around badass—a wild, untamed guy that everyone notices. His long, messy hair, the leather jacket he always wears, his constant rock ‘n’ roll vibe, and, of course, the undeniable smirk that’s always on his face. I never really thought much of it. We’re friends. He’s just Eddie being Eddie. But now? I’m starting to wonder if there’s more to it.

The way he looks at me sometimes. The way his arm casually drapes around my shoulders when we sit close. The way he holds my hand, like it’s something natural, like we’ve been doing it forever.

But then I remember—Eddie’s the kind of guy who’s into wild, pretty girls. Not… well, not me. I’m not thin, I’m not what everyone expects. I’ve got extra weight, and I always feel like I’m the last person someone like Eddie would ever want to date. He’s got a reputation to uphold, after all, and I’m just his friend. Nothing more.

It’s a Saturday, and we’re lying on Eddie’s bed again, watching one of those cheesy 80s slasher flicks. We’ve been here for hours, the room filled with the scent of old pizza and the faint smell of smoke from the joint we shared earlier. Eddie’s strumming his guitar quietly in the corner, the soft music blending with the sounds of the TV. He’s so comfortable here, and for the first time in a long while, I feel relaxed too.

"So..." Eddie glances over at me, his eyes mischievous. “When am I gonna meet your parents?”

My heart skips a beat, and I turn to face him, unsure of what he’s getting at. “What?” I ask, the word coming out a little more confused than I intended.

“You know,” he says, still grinning. “I feel like I’ve spent enough time with you, your friends, and your—well, your extended family. What about the folks? When do I get to meet them?”

I blink, unsure if he’s joking or being serious. “Eddie, what the hell? Why would you need to meet my parents?”

He sits up, running a hand through his messy hair, his expression turning slightly more serious, but there’s still a playful edge to it. “Because, Y/N, I’m your boyfriend.”

I laugh a little, but then I catch the look in his eyes. He’s not joking. Or at least, he doesn’t seem to think he’s joking. My breath catches in my throat. “Boyfriend?” I repeat, barely able to hide the confusion in my voice.

Eddie chuckles softly, shaking his head. “Y/N, come on. We’ve been going on dates for months. I even took you to that picnic last weekend, remember? We smoked a little weed, and I bought you dinner afterward. That’s a date, sweetheart. Plus I invite you to my shows and then dinner afterward. I consider that a date.”

I swallow hard. Oh god. I didn’t realize that’s what that was. I thought we were just hanging out, just… being us. I mean, Eddie’s invited people to see his band before, so I just assumed this was another one of those things. He’s always friendly to everyone. And yeah, we’ve shared some quiet moments together, but I never thought it meant what he clearly thinks it does.

“But you invite everyone to your shows, Eddie,” I say, trying to explain myself, my voice trembling a little. “I thought you were just being nice, like you always are. Like, friendly Eddie.”

He narrows his eyes at me, leaning in a little closer. “I’m always nice, sure. But I don't pay for everyone's dinner. Being nice isn't the same thing as asking someone on a date, is it?” He gives me a pointed look, clearly a little frustrated.

I chew on my lip, still unsure of what I’m missing. “I don’t know, Eddie,” I say quietly. “I just thought… we were friends.”

He grins, his usual cocky charm returning. “I thought we were more than that. I mean, come on. We’ve been holding hands, sharing this bed, watching movies together. You’re practically my girlfriend without all the labels.”

I feel a warmth spread across my cheeks as I glance down at my hands. He’s right—we’ve been close. Really close. But I never thought of it in those terms. I’m not used to being the girl who gets that kind of attention. Especially not from someone like Eddie.

“I don’t know what to say,” I whisper. “I didn’t realize you felt that way. I didn’t think you wanted to be with me.”

Eddie gently takes my hand, squeezing it softly. “Why wouldn’t I want to be with you? You’re incredible. You’ve been there for me, Y/N. You come to all my shows, you cheer me on like you’re my biggest fan. You support me—like a girlfriend would. I thought you knew.”

I feel my heart pounding in my chest. Does he really feel that way about me?

The weight of his words settles on me, and I begin to understand. He’s been there for me too, in his own way. He’s always included me, always been there to make me laugh, always made sure I felt important. I start to realize that maybe I’ve been blind to what’s been right in front of me this whole time.

“We’ve been hanging out so much,” I say, a little embarrassed, “I just thought it was normal. I mean, I never thought you were asking me out. I thought you were just… being Eddie.”

Eddie smiles, the tenderness in his eyes making my chest tighten. “I get it,” he says. “But I’ve been asking you out, Y/N. We’ve been going on dates. I don’t do this with anyone else, you know. It’s always been you.”

I nod, trying to process everything. The hand-holding, the moments when he pulls me closer when we’re sitting next to each other, the way he makes sure I’m always part of whatever he’s doing. He’s been showing me, in his own way, that he cares.

“You’re right,” I whisper, my voice barely audible. “I just… I didn’t know. I didn’t realize.”

Eddie brushes a lock of hair behind my ear, his touch gentle, and I can’t help but melt into it. “Well, now you do,” he says softly. “And I’m not going anywhere.”

I smile, feeling something shift between us. Maybe I’ve been blind to it all along. Maybe I was the one who didn’t see what was right there in front of me. But now I do. And somehow, knowing that Eddie really does want to be with me makes everything feel right.

As Eddie leans back, his arm sliding across my shoulders, I feel like maybe—just maybe—I’m finally seeing things clearly. And I can’t help but wonder what the next step for us is.

Dan is in an isolated bunker in the middle of the woods. Surely nothing will happen to our dear friend Dan. (What is it with archivists and getting snatched by The Horrors? Ignore the tv show it doesn't exist)

Red Valley: Just a couple of guys with an interest in research station Red Valley, whose focus was cryonics. It's completely defunct now. I wonder what happened. (Ethics? What's that?)

Woe.Begone: Some say it's about time-travel, some say it's about keeping yourself and those close to you alive, some say it's about online safety. All can agree on one point: What the fuck why are there cowboys now

Midnight Burger: Midnight Burger is a time-travelling, dimension-spanning diner. Dunno how it works or where it's going next. We open at six! (The episodes are an hour long minimum but it's worth it. Comedy sci-fi, lighthearted fun :)

Old Gods of Appalachia: The Appalachians are spooky y'all. (The narrator's voice is so comforting in this, it feels like campfire stories)

Dreamboy: Went into this pod being told it was made by the people who made WTNV and absolutely no other information. Let me tell you I did not expect the main character to tell us that he got a hard-on in the first episode. (The most sexually explicit pod I've listened to)

The White Vault: Nice little trip to Svalbard to check on the remote research station, surely nothing will go wrong :) (Holy Fucking Shit What Is That) (Recommend 1st season especially to The Thing (1982) enjoyers)

Camlann: Ever wished that you were apart of Welsh folklore or Arthurian legends? Or perhaps some of the last people left on Earth? No? Ah well, you'll pick it up soon enough. (Three idiots and a dog in Wales, fighting for their lives)

Breaker Whiskey: Imagine. Being the only person on earth. Just you. Just you, and someone on the radio. Just you, the radio, and a woman you absolutely do NOT have sexual tension with. (This one looks really long because it has 260+ episodes, but they're like 4 minutes long each so it's not really)

Ethics Town: Don't worry about it. (Cannot recommend enough, it is a mindfuck)

Tell No Tales: What if ghosts were a thing that could infest a place, like rats or roaches or mold? What if it was your job to exterminate them? And the million-pound question, do ghosts deserve rights? (I am waiting so so patiently for the rest of s2)

Remnants: You wake up in a place you recognise. You have always been there. You have no idea where you are. You see a stranger's life. You recognise them. You knew them once, you think. Discard or reshelve? You don't know what that means. It does not matter. Discard or reshelve, that is the question. (I am going insane over this pod)

Not Quite Dead: Vampires! Alfie is an overworked A&E nurse who does not have time for this shit. Unfortunately, he does not have a choice in this matter. (A really interesting take on vampirism, going into the biology. It is fascinating, and an exciting story)

Travelling Light: Space Quaker! Listen to the Traveller tell you about every new planet and civilisation they visit. Whattttt noooo they don't have a crush on one of their crew members what are you taaaalking abouttttt (Very comforting pod, beauty in the mundane in a way? But not mundane because yk. Aliens)

Someone Just Like You: Brilliant horror, just really well written. I don't even have words for it. So far there are only 6 episodes and the concepts/plots of each seem cheesy, but my GOD the execution.

The Bright Sessions: People with powers get therapy! Thank God, they need it so bad. (I love one particular antagonist so much, I need to put him in a microwave)

Poe: Evermore: It wasn't until I started this that I realised that Edgar Allen Poe would have had a Boston-ish accent. Reallyyy interesting story of his life, and I keep getting jumpscared by VAs I recognise. Faulkner Silt Verses what are you doing here.

Witherburn After School News: Your school radio host getting WAY more involved in the news than they should. Really hope they're still breathing. Love the folklore section though!

Before The Tone: Voicemails from someone who just got a job they probably shouldn't have. (Brilliant idea for the format, and great execution)

I Am In Eskew: What if you were trapped? What if you had a home, a wife and a child? What if they aren't real? Are you sure? Go and check. What if your city tried to kill you? What if it loved you very much, more than anyone else? (Horror but the narrator is the saddest wettest man you've ever heard)

Sherlock & Co: Modern day Sherlock Holmes, and John Watson is a true crime podcaster. Dear God I did not think it would be as compelling as it is.

Well, @starryalpacasstuff, I understand why you were excited for me to get to this episode, because it was a lot. So, here we go:

Pat definitely isn't beating the puppy allegations with his propensity for sniffing everything.

Don't be a lying liar now, Pran; you think Pat's face is the epitome of cuteness. I know they are going to hurt me because they opened this episode with this domesticity.

Ok, I need 3 business days to process my feelings about Pran's doodles of their interactions. Pran, my beloved, is a top-tier yearner.

"There's nothing wrong with rewearing clothes." Pat is a sustainability king.

Ink, are you a PatPran shipper? If so, please join Pa, who is waiting for you in the corner with snacks.

Pat, tell me you didn't bring Ink to the place where you had your first date with Pran. You did? The betrayal! I guess I'll have to forgive you because you yourself weren't aware that you were on a date with Pran.

Pa's in the house, guys. Reason has entered the chat. I love that she encourages him to know if his feelings for Ink are genuine or not.

I hope we get to see more of Ink and Pa together, even if it's just them being friends.

Oh, this is interesting. Pat is subconsciously realizing that he sees Pran in a different light. What exactly? He doesn't know. I do feel bad for my confused son, though.

Not Pat asking Pran if Wai ever spent the night in the dorm 💀💀. And Pran, totally unaware of Pat's emotional turmoil, answered that Wai in fact did sleep right where Pat did.

These flashbacks are killing me. Pran was really soft-launching a confession by saying that he wanted to compose a song that conveys the sense of 'born to be together.' AHHHHHHHH.

Something about Pat asking Pran if he would like him if Pran were Ink and Pa telling Pat that she would confess her feelings to Ink if she were Pat is making me wanna chew on glass.

Pran asking Pat if Ink is at the contest venue and saying that she should be there to support Pran😭😭😭😭.

NO. HE DID NOT. Pran, bestie, tell me you didn't belt out the song that you wrote with your high school 'friend' in a competition against him. You did! Is it petty? Maybe. Petty Pran is in the house and I AM LIVING. I support him 100 percent.

Ink, the woman that you are!!! "You don't seem to be afraid of heartbreak." She was spitting nothing but facts here. Now that Pat knows where he and Ink stand, I hope she remains being a great friend to him because my boy's a mess, and he can use all the help he can get while sorting out his romantic feelings for Pran. I don't think his friends are going to be of any help in this matter. He has Pa, but I think Ink can be more objective when it comes to Pran.

Pat is jealous that his 'friendship' with Pran is a secret.

Pat really went from saying, "I'm not your wife," to acting like a jilted wife in this episode.

Pran, the philosopher that you are. I have half a mind to write about his "Nothing means nothing" to Wai regarding his relationship with Pat.

I'm not really feeling Wai here, guys. Pran asked him to not interfere, but why did he still hit Pat? Thank God that Pran, haver of all brain cells, told him to go home.

Was it only in Ep 2 that Pat wanted to meet the person who was crushing on him on the rooftop? We sure came a long way from there.

Pat is very open about his feelings. He doesn't know why he is feeling what he is feeling, but he still is trying to explain them to Pran.

If we're not enemies, do you think we can be friends? Why? Do you want us to be friends? No.

Can I get this etched onto my soul? Please and thank you.

THE KISS. God, the emotional weight it carried!! Their reactions after they part from the kiss are very telling—Pat has a smile on his face, and Pran is crying and not with joy. After Pran leaves him alone on the rooftop, I think it dawned on Pat as to what all just happened.

Side note on jealousy vs. envy:

Jealousy: to get upset and angry because someone you love seems interested in another person. Envy: to wish that you had something that another person has.

Pat is jealous when he sees Pran and Wai together. Pran, on the other hand, was envious of the person who was on the receiving end of Pat's affections. Jealousy wasn't what Pran had experienced till now when it came to Pat, because he never imagined that he had a chance with him. This is where we see the differences in their personalities and the reason for Pran, with tears down his cheeks, leaving Pat behind on the rooftop after their kiss. Pran has made peace with the fact that he'll be a yearner forever where Pat is concerned. Pat, my beloved, is a bit impulsive and wants to throw caution to the wind and see where things land, unlike Pran, who is a planner and enjoys structure and order in his life. Just because Pran had feelings for Pat for all these years doesn't mean that he thought about how he would deal with them if they were reciprocated. Classic yearner mindset!!

ur part of the reason I just played OFF and after finishing it, I thought you might have an interesting opinion of the game's narrative. I guess I'm asking to hear it or any other thoughts you have about it?

oh boy !! my favorite fun game for cute children !!!! this will be a long post but i have tried my best to condense everything as much as possible. i will say this is a wild, images connected by string on a corkboard type analysis but hey, thats what makes it fun !

so what do i think is the story being told here ? (under the cut)

off is such an interesting game to me, because of the mystery surrounding its story. theres no clear answer, mortis ghost himself has said the game itself is up to interpretation. however there are many many theories some deep some not, and at the end of the day it may just be a game meant to be vague and weird and thats it ! but this is the theory i think fits the best from my experience playing the game.

one thing that i believe is pretty straightforward about the story is the allegory for the effects of extreme illness and its effects on the lives of people, specifically our most important character- Hugo, the sickly child who we know as the creator of the world of off (which includes the queen and the batter himself)

I will get this out of the way now, i think the overall theme of off deals with the idea of eugenics as well as religion.

we know that hugo created this world, we know he is extremely ill, we know he is lonely and most likely using the creation of the zones as a coping mechanism to escape his reality. we can see that hugos mother is most likely his primary guardian but is not often around (as the queen has duties to attend to) and his father is not present up until the start of the game- meaning he has just only now started to have relevance in hugo’s life.

now where does religion come in ? its simple, the batter is here to purify the world (the world=hugo) and he will do do by force. with this we can assume that hugo’s real life father is a religious man, even further with the idea of the three rings, three zones, etc being a reference to the holy trinity.

so back to hugo, i believe he is a sick child, terminally ill. his mother might be working all the time to cover the medical bills and his father, a religious man refused to take care of a child who is destined to die. perhaps at the start of game hugo is quite literally on his deathbed, being kept alive by machines and pumped full of medication, causing his father to have to come into the picture for them to make a choice: pull the plug (or switch the world “off”) and let hugo rest, or continue to keep him alive.

i will also agree with the idea that each of the guardians of the zones represent some level of illness or disability as well, but i will not go into tje specifics of each as this is already going to be a long post.

anyways back to the batter. he needs to rid the world of “imperfections” (catch the implication ?) and bring about an era of holiness. i believe hugo’s father did not want him as the parents knew hugo was going to be born ill, and that is why he left. God damned his soul and hugo’s father believes that hugo is in some way paying for his sins. the mother has the child, wanting to give him a chance to survive, but now hugo is reaching the end of his life. his father wants to pull the plug, to rid the world of his “impure” son, the mother wants to keep him alive and give him a chance- but most likely for selfish purposes as i believe hugo’s brain is mostly gone already, what’s left is his mind’s attempt to cope with the pain by creating this world.

the elsen are also extremely sickly, working to death mindlessly, so while i am mostly talking about the story in relation to hugo himself, it can also be assumed that perhaps some type of epidemic is going on on a larger scale. of we consider that and branch out our view, we can see this:

there are people who are sick, and there are people who are using religion to push an idea of eradicating them. some may say this is an allegory for a genocide of sorts.

but back to the small scale with hugo. what is it that caused him to be sickly ? i believe he was born this way yes but with his environment it worsened. now we get into the elements in the world of off. smoke could be the reason for his terrible cough. ive seen people say metal could refer to the chrome sterile hard surfaces of a hospital. plastic which associates the toys we see him playing with as a distraction. and meat os essential to him to keep on living. with these things in mind i also assume that perhaps while born ill hugo’s condition is worsened by living in poverty- specifically in reference to the meat- as it flows thruout the world of off in abundance, the importance of being able to access food being something very important to hugo.

and then theres the secret element: sugar.

sugar to me is representative of drugs, medical or otherwise. the sugar is there to lessen the pain of living and is extremely addictive. these drugs could be im reference to the use of substances to escape the horrid reality of poverty by the working class as well as the medication being used to keep hugo alive in the hospital, or at the very least suppressing his symptoms.

so what is it i think off is about ? i believe off is a sickly child’s perception of illness in both himself and his community, worsened by the effects of poverty amidst a complicated relationship with his parents. his mother is active but neglectful, his father wants him dead, they are fighting bacl and forth on the decision of hugo’s life. on a larger scale i feel it has to do with how religion is often a big element of eugenics and the idea of a “pure” human being, and that is often a stance taken to defend mass destruction such as genocide, and hugo happens to be a victim of that.

now this could all be the ramblings of something that has no deep meaning by a person who likes to think too hard about media, as i said none of this is really confirmed, but out of all the theories ive read and playing the game myself this is the story i assign to off, and the complexities of it is why this is my absolute favorite game !

Probably not a hot take from me, but...

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is one of the best family films of 2024.

SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT

It's not a perfect adaptation of Sonic Adventure 2 by any means, but it cleans up a lot of the unessary stuff from the game.

Especially in regards to Maria and the ARK.

I LOVE that the Space Colony ARK doesn't exist in this movie. Because the movie knows it doesn't need it. All it needs to adapt is the research facility where Maria dies and the Eclipse Cannon.

Gerald Robotnik is an interesting character in the film for sure. He still has the same hatred he harbored for humanity in SA2, but with the added bonus of resentment for his grandson, Ivo because, in his own words...

"You're no Maria."

Gerald definitely is playing favorites, and I think it's abundantly clear why. He sees himself in Ivo, and it disgusts him. Whereas with Maria, he can only remember her innocence.

Speaking of Ivo, man, he's great. I mean, he's just all over the place in this film. He's good, he'd bad... and he sure as hell is funny. He and Stone are great, and I love how he finally admits his true thoughts about him during his sacrifice. Stone deserved to be validated for all the shit Ivo put him through over the years.

Now, I wanna move on to our meat and potatoes. Sonic and Shadow. They're phenomenal. Sonic is pretty much the same as he was in Sonic 2, with a little bit of added angst, which is due entirely to the film's themes about family, morality, and loss. Shadow is... jesus... he was amazing. He was everything I wanted him to be. Cool, dark, yet understanding. That being said, I wish they spent more time on Shadow dealing with the issue of what Maria wanted VS getting revenge on GUN with Gerald. I think extending Shadow's conversation with Gerald about their plan and Maria's wish would have done this perfectly and, in turn, better set up his switch to the good side so it's not as "oh yeah I guess we're doing this now."

"Live and Learn."

Okay, time for me to gush about Crush 40.

First of all, SEGA needs to pay Johnny G. what he's owed. Second...

HOLY FUCK

Live and Learn is everywhere in this thing. It's basically Shadow's theme for this film, playing in moments where he's either doing cool shit, or turning further to the light.

And when it played when Sonic and Shadow went Super on the fucking moon?! Oh my god, I would've screamed if it weren't for the fact I was in a public movie theater. You do NOT understand what this means for the next few films. We might actually get songs like "What I'm Made Of" or "His World" adapted for these movies if they keep doing well.

And I don't need a masters degree in Sonic-The-Hedgehogology to tell you how COOL that would be.

Speaking of Sonic, I wanna turn it back to talk about him and Tom. Dude. I love how Tom is immediately ready to join Sonic on his adventures. He loves this kid and wants to support him in any way he can, and I bet Sonic's so happy Tom wants to Hero with him.

"What did you do."

Tom's injury towards the end actually hurt me a bit. I didn't realize how much I cared about him until they played with the possibility of his death in this film. Also, I love what it meant to Sonic. We've seen in Sonic 2 that Sonic has some pent-up aggression for the echidna that killed Longclaw, that he never really properly expresses. The possibility of losing Tom, his best friend and father figure, the first person he connected with after years of isolation, it drives Sonic into a dark mindset. And. I. Love it.

This is what modern Sonic stories need. To give Sonic a wide variety of emotions, for him to act rashly if his closest friends and family are hurt, because it gives him more personality and shows us just how much he cares.

"What was his name...? Tom...?"

I loved everything about the scenes where Tom is hinted at being dead. I love how Shadow sees Sonic's reaction to Tom's potential death, and he has a small realization that he's become just like who he hated. I love watching Sonic panicking because he might be losing his best friend and father. I love how Maddie tries to keep a hold of herself for the sake of Team Sonic. I love the argument between Knuckles and Sonic about the use of the Master Emerald. I love the fight between Super Shadow and Super Sonic. I love how Shadow criticizes Sonic for letting his blind rage take over. I love how he wants Sonic to finish the job, and Sonic realizes what he's doing.

"The light shines, even though the star is gone..."

Sonic and Shadow's brief conversation on the moon is actually really sweet. They share a connection through their losses, and Sonic is able to guide Shadow to the light, by simply telling him to make the right choice. I think it's great because up until now, I think Shadow believed what he was doing WAS the right thing. But after seeing himself become like the GUN agents who ended up killing Maria... He starts to doubt himself. He goes to Gerald, who reassures him that what they're doing is justified, but Shadow doesn't believe that. Note how in that scene he asks if "this is what Maria would have wanted." Gerald responds by basically ignoring his question, saying that destroying earth is what deserves to happen to it. Gerald's own attitude led to his downfall. It's what caused Shadow to realize that he's on the wrong side of the fight by the time Sonic and him are on the moon, sulking.

"There are no winners with revenge."

I love this line from Sonic. It says so much about his past experiences from the last 2 films. He's seen revenge constantly ruin his life. So to be the one delivering it...? It goes against everything he's stood for, crosses a line he doesn't want to cross, and most importantly, sets him up for failure.

"Don't tell me you have a catchphrase.."

I like the comradery between Sonic and Shadow in the Super Hogs v GUN drones fight. They have a newfound understanding for each other that I think would have been able to make them better friends had it not been for Shadow's sacrifice, which will probably lead to the amnesia plot lines from Heroes and Shadow 05, which means it'll probably make Shadow a Sonic hater again. But then again, these movies keep surprising me, so who knows, maybe we won't go that route?

Solas Before the Veil

Firstly, spoilers below...

It hit me yesterday - my whole perspective on Solas through the spirit lens has been shaped by the Veil as it exists now, this physical barrier separating the Fade from the physical world. 

But Solas made the choice to form a body in a time before the Veil existed. 

In the pre-Veil world, spirits weren’t alien or separate entities. They existed naturally alongside the elves, Titans, and dwarves. The Fade wasn’t a separate realm - it was woven into the very fabric of the world. There was no “crossing” into the physical realm because spirits were already a part of it. They weren’t outsiders; they were neighbors, collaborators, even friends. 

This realization has my mind spinning. This is why I love Solas as a character: the layers, the vastness of interpretation. 

No Veil. No twisting of purpose. 

There was no Veil for spirits to be pulled into or corrupted by. In those days, they didn’t “crossover” in the way we think of now - they used lyrium, the blood of Titans, to form physical bodies. 

His transformation likely wasn’t tied to the risks of corruption that spirits face in the post-Veil world (still a possibility). Without the trauma of “crossing” the Veil, spirits like Solas could become physical without risking their essence being warped (I'm not saying experiencing human emotions and the shock of being human wouldn't be traumatizing). In this context, it's not Pride vs Wisdom. Instead, it’s the natural struggle of a spirit becoming man. 

I am reforming a lot of Solas thoughts - from his connection to Mythal, to his pride, his decisions, even his relationships. Oh my god. Bear with me, this might ramble – this came up during Christmas dinner with my sister, and we ended up debating it over a lot of wine afterward. 

The world before the Veil wasn’t governed by absolutes like good and evil, or even spirit and demon. Those are oversimplifications. 

What if lyrium, the blood of Titans, acted as a stabilizing agent? A way for spirits to create physical forms without losing their identity or purpose? That would be so different from the chaotic, dangerous processes spirits face in present day Dragon Age. 

Still thinking this through.

Anyway, this is shifting how I see Solas, his choices, and what it means to be a spirit-turned-man (immortal man). 

(This thought made me think of an awesome 10 part breakdown I read just before Veilguard came out from @nadas-dirthalen.  They have amazing insight and concepts related to Solas, Lyrium and Titans that I need to reread if I'm going to go further with these thoughts).  

MYTHAL PERSUADING VS BINDING

I stand by my belief that Solas, despite his reluctance and hesitancy, chose to take a body. Where I once saw that choice as something that helped him avoid becoming completely twisted (as per this post), I’m starting to see it in a different light. 

I’ve never quite bought the theory that Mythal might have bound Solas. This perspective makes even more sense in this context (to me). 

How could Mythal have bound him? There was no Veil that would force a spirit to change. Lyrium was needed to create physical bodies. She couldn’t physically force him into corporeal form against his will because the act of using lyrium to transform a spirit into a body would require cooperation. Sure, it’s possible that in the pre-Veil world, spirits were metaphysically bound to serve beings like the Evanuris. But that kind of binding was different - a spirit might be compelled to act in service while still remaining in its natural form. 

The act of physically transforming into a body with lyrium, though? It’s physical. It would require active engagement with lyrium’s magical and physical properties.

For the transformation to succeed, the spirit would need to align its will with the lyrium. Does that sound right? The body it forms would reflect the spirit’s essence, and that process seems like it would require both consent and intent. Solas had to choose to take on a physical form by engaging with the lyrium. 

And Mythal would have needed Solas to act willingly. Binding him would’ve completely undermined the very wisdom she sought from him. If she needed his insight and perspective, she also needed him to act freely. We are led to believe a spirit of Wisdom can’t function under compulsion. (Spirit of Wisdom Codex: "I am not certain the spirit would have talked so freely had it been shackled at the time.") 

So, if a spirit has to actively engage with lyrium and use its own will and essence to shape a physical body, then Solas didn’t just choose. He committed. (And let’s take a moment to appreciate what a fine body he shaped.) 

Solas’s reluctance to take a body, as per his warnings to Mythal about the risks of using lyrium, tells me he understood exactly what the transformation entailed. He knew the dangers - not just to himself but to the morality of what they were doing, including the horrifying reality of exploiting Titans for their blood. And why wouldn't he? He was a spirt of Wisdom. 

There’s no question that Mythal persuaded him, manipulated that persuasion, appealing to his purpose, emotional manipulation - but she didn’t force him. 

He still agreed. 

He wasn’t drawn to physical form for power or glory but out of a sense of...what? Duty, loyalty and purpose? To Mythal? He didn’t take a body to dominate or conquer the physical world. He did it because Mythal needed him as a counterbalance to the growing chaos and imbalance caused by the Evanuris.  

And then? He regrets it. Big time. 

That regret, to me, is so telling. Regret is a reflective emotion - it stems from owning up to your own choices. If he’d been bound or coerced, his feelings would’ve leaned more toward resentment or anger at Mythal. Instead, he’s consumed by regret because it was his decision in the end. 

NO BINDING – NO TWISTING OF PURPOSE 

As a man, Solas struggles with pride - not as some twisted perversion of Wisdom in this context, but as a human emotion. 

Solas’s decisions are just so much more painful, awful, delightfully complex, and utterly infuriating because of all this. The layers! They’re impossible to ignore. And honestly, the whole Mythal geas thing always bugged me. It felt too simple, too black-and-white. Something about it didn’t sit right. 

If Solas was under her geas, how could he choose to walk away from her? How could he burn her vallaslin off his face? Some say Mythal marked him with the vallaslin as soon as he took bodily form; others think it came later. Does anyone actually know? Either way...the vallaslin might have been more symbolic since there’s no evidence Mythal used it to enslave her people (or is there? I'm too impatient to look right now). 

But if it did have magical enslaving powers? That makes Solas’s agency even more impressive. Despite that, he still chose to remove it – successfully. (Let's say Mythal did have some sort of magical power over Solas, could the burning off the vallaslin have severed that?)

Anyway...getting distracted. Sorry!

Ok, so lyrium. It’s the blood of Titans.  Titans are "earth," so by taking on a physical body, Solas connected himself to the earth. He became man - human in a way he wasn’t before. 

Pride isn’t some monstrous force he has to overcome. It’s an intrinsic part of who he is, shaped by his choices, struggles, and human experiences.

Solas is what he has always been, a man, all too aware of his failings.  

Solas has been revealing who he is all along.  

Anyway, I'm still thinking through a lot of this and how it might change more perspectives (like how I view the various endings, how his time with the Evanuris shaped him, the Inquisition time). Lots to chew on and things may shift again for me. But I’d love to hear other thoughts - even if it’s to tell me this doesn’t make any sense or if I got anything wrong.

Most Sherlock Holmes adaptations I've seen tend to place their Final Problem towards the mid point of the series (or even a bit earlier) - it's also in my opinion the best way of going about it, so you have time enough for the characters to adjust after the reunion but they know each other well enough for the events of Fina to be devastating.

Sherlock & Co is done with 20 of the adventures. How many are there? Fifty-something? Almost sixty? Let's say we'll be entering mid-point territory after the 25th story.

So let's pretend for a moment that we have 5 more stories until The Final Problem. Ok.

Estimating an adventure at 3 episodes each, that would mean little over 3 months - maybe 3 and a half? Starting, of course, from the end of Sign of Four, which will be somewhere in December.

So let's say 3, maybe 4 months into 2025. That would be, what? Late march, early april?

One day, Gjör and her peers were lead by their mentor Opheria, to a mission far from their home. On the peak of that mountain village, they saw upon the horizon, the castle of their home go up in flames. Horrified and scared, the apprentices sought to follow their mentors guidance, and followed her lead into a small barn. It was there, that Opheria proceeded to slaughter each and everyone of the apprentices. It seemed she somehow had a hand in this sudden attack on the Order of Palms. Gjör D'annevual survived a sword through the 'heart', on account of a rare condition, that places her heart on the other side of her chest. When she finally managed to bring herself back home, the Order was insulted by her survival. She had so many better peers, why couldn't any of them have survived? This runt was seriously the only thing that survived Opherias wrath? It was better to just wash their hands clean of this. Thus the Order decided to banish Gjör from their ranks. She now travels the land in search of a purpose.
