a good point someone made in the tags of the douma crush post.

I will not tag them because it’s their opinion and they need not defend it. Plus, it’s okay to have different opinions for the same character. However, I’m bored and I enjoy talking about Douma and his psychology. [ I also understand this person ships Shinobu/Douma, please don’t mistake this post as me dissecting the ship apart. S/D has potential and incredible emotional energy (on one side of the equation*cough*Shinobu*cough*) and can develop into a relationship that is some unorthodox take on love. ]
However, if I were to say that Douma truly fell in love with Shinobu then it would debunk my ask in its entirety. I wrote a whole lot that wouldn’t get saved because this website is stupid but basically,
Douma’s APD/ASPD (the clinical term for sociopathy and psychopathy) makes it hard for him to experience many emotions. He might’ve experienced being excited, boredom, curiosity, irritation, likes, dislikes but for grandiose and notorious emotions like love, anger, hate, fear, sadness, those are hard to achieve. They require more work on the body and brain, they ask so much of you and take a toll on you.
Emotions like those wreck you, Douma has never lived feeling wrecked and off his feet, knee-less. An immortal, nihilistic being who lives hedonistically–– while he doesn’t fear the day he may fall, he takes a liking/interest to the people who can/could do it. This character thinking and whatnot are tropes, the specific tropes for Shinobu and Douma would be: Villain Takes an Interest, Graceful Loser, and Villainous Crush.
Villainous Crush, in particular, was used on the site TVTropes to explain Douma and Shinobu’s last-minute interactions.

The beginnings of a crush and the beginnings of love can work similar fashion that’s why they are used synonymously, despite that being inaccurate. Love is powerful and pungent and while there are many variations of it, the reactions and effects walk around the same area. The love Douma may have for a significant other is not the same love he’d have for a child he’d decree as his own, but the effects should be around the same ballpark. We know that his true nature is cold and closed off, the only person we know to have had experienced seeing it was Kanao. Love would require Douma to shed the façade he carries and it’s obvious that he dislikes that side of him. In my humble opinion, Douma’s love has to be more than a flushed face and drumming heartbeat because those are symptoms you can get from anything.
As requested, I will soon get into my hcs regarding love w/ Douma but here are some quotes I feel encompass it pretty well.
"How I do love you! How deeply and for how long I have done so! It was precisely this impulse, this love for you, formerly unidentified, that gnawed at me from within and darkened and saddened me from without, that weighed down on my hands and shackled my feet. It is precisely because of the nature of this passion that I am languid and unsuccessful and just what I am. I am haunted (…)" –– Letters: Summer 1926
“This is how I learned to love.
Fleeting; in a panic; a frenzy;
watching as the wicked unfolds.”
––– SINK.
“Love,
this is; no poem. What is the term
for the gathering of one falcon?
An embarrassment of poets.
An adoration. An abyss.”
–– Venus as a Bear.
