Me, remembering how utterly terrible Cardan was to Jude in the first book: God, what an unbearable little fuck.

Also me, remembering that he's actually very awkward with the way he shows affection because he believes that to receive love, he needs to copy the people he admires, and thus the reason why he fumbled so hard at the end of TWK is because he was foolishly trying to act smart like Jude by tricking her, then he spent months writing pathetic little letters to her to try to bring her back because he was certain that she was ignoring him. Also, he makes flowers bloom to make Jude happy with his silly little High King powers (very important): Cardan is the babiest babyboy who has ever babyboyed.

We know Jude can be violent, BUT only if she needs to and only to those who deserve it. And you EXPECT it from her.

the amount of disrespect Nicasia gave Cardan when she chose to not ONLY cheat on Cardan behind his back for weeks but to also have sexual intercourse with Locke in Cardan's bedroom. And how Cardan found them wrapped in his tapestry blanket on HIS FLOOR!! the f*cking AUDACITY!!!!!!! It was so sad how heartbroken Cardan was that he drank for many days, laughed out of misery, and cried. He even was almost on the brink of doing something he never does: crawling to Nicasia to BEG her to love him again.

mermaid girl obviously made a HUGE mistake, because after that action she had lost his love and trust completely. I think that should say something about Cardan, he does not give second chances when someone neglects his heart. do you ever think about cardan truly feeling at home in faerieland only after becoming the high king? that he always must've felt as an outcast, an unwanted son, like he doesn't belong, like he has to prove something, that he was eaten alive by his own hatred, by fear and anger. he was just that one excentric youngest prince whom his father doesn't even want to see. his own mother doesn't love him. too young, too weak, too mean.

and then suddenly faerieland at its core is his beating heart, he is the lifeblood, he does not only finally feel like he belongs, faerieland is him. he is genuinely a good king, he is loved, he raised an isle from the bottom of the sea. and it's the deepest connection that can ever be.
